Supply Chain

At the end of the supply chain, materials and finished products only flow there because of customer behaviour at the end of the chain; academics Alan Harrison and Janet Godsell argue that “Supply chain processes should be co-ordinated in order to focus on end customer buying behaviour”, and look for “Customer responsiveness” as an indicator confirming that materials are able to flow “Through a sequence of supply chain processes in order to meet end customer buying behaviour”.

“Many of the exchanges encountered in the supply chain take place between varied companies that seek to maximize their revenue within their sphere of interest but may have little or no knowledge or interest in the remaining players in the supply chain. More recently, the loosely coupled, self-organizing network of businesses who cooperate to provide product and service offerings has been called the extended enterprise, and the use of the term”chain” and the linear structure it appears to represent have been criticised as “harder to relate … to the way supply networks really operate.

In 2018, the Loyola University Chicago’s Supply and Value Chain Center found in a survey that 53% of supply chain professionals considered ethics to be “Extremely” important to their organization.

Marshall L. Fisher asks the question in a key article, “Which is the right supply chain for your product?” Fisher, and also Naylor, Naim and Berry, identify two matching characteristics of supply chain strategy: a combination of “Functional” and “Efficient”, or a combination of “Responsive” and “Innovative”.

The Global Supply Chain Forum has introduced another supply chain model.

EU’s draft supply chain law are due diligence requirements to protect human rights and the environment in the supply chain.

Broadly, the success of the supply chain depends on the product design and the capabilities of the supply chain, but the reverse is also true: the success of the product depends on the supply chain that produces it.

Supply Chain Trends In 2022: Are You Ready To Beat The Heat?

SUPPLY CHAINS WILL CONTINUE TO BE STRESSED ALL OF THIS YEAR, TOO. Following a nightmarish stretch when businesses had to deal with everything from material scarcity and inflation to manpower shortages and port congestions-and the result that entire value chains have been disrupted – we now have a perfect storm that has been nearly a year in the making, and the likes of which we’ve never seen before.

AI WILL HELP BUSINESSES MAKE THE LEAP FROM SURVIVAL TO GROWTH. Following the hard lessons of the past nearly 24 months, businesses are fast realizing the importance of investing in, and building, intelligent supply chains.

Given that nearly all businesses have already been gathering data for years, they are now looking to leverage the insights they can gain from across their value chains, shifting from discrete, point-solutions to a more evolved platform approach to acquiring supply chain agility and resilience.

Thus, businesses are looking for more practical, realistic and transparent solutions to supply chain issues as they look for newer ways to meet demand cost-effectively.

KNOW YOUR FACTS – DATA NEVER LIES. A few months ago, the American Trucking Association reported that the U.S. was facing a shortage of 80,000 truckers, which was one of the major factors worsening already appalling supply chain chaos.

CUSTOMER LOYALTY AND TRUST ARE IRREPLACEABLE. Running out of stock due to cliched supply chain issues just isn’t an option.

With intelligent supply chains, businesses no longer have to work on hindsight and prayer.

SourceMap Raises $10M To Step Up Supply Chain Transparency And Traceability

In a bid to make procurement less of a headache for retailers, supply chain due diligence platform SourceMap announced this week that it had raised $10 million to grow its tracking and traceability solution, as well as to support an expansion into Europe.

“We were the first company to commercialize software for supply chain mapping, which is a process whereby brands and manufacturers go beyond their direct suppliers and find out where their raw materials come from,” Leo Bonanni, CEO of SourceMap, explained to Modern Shipper.

SourceMap supports the 400,000 business entities on its platform in a variety of areas, including supplier discovery, supply chain mapping and supplier risk assessment.

According to Bonanni, while plenty of focus has been placed on the impact of geopolitical uncertainty on the direct supply chain in areas like shipping, freight and last mile – and rightfully so – not enough emphasis is being placed on the very beginning of the supply chain, on the sourcing of parts and raw materials.

” essentially a social network where companies that have very sophisticated supply chains, they invite their suppliers, they collect information on who the suppliers buy from, and they invite the sub-suppliers and the sub-sub-suppliers until they get a complete picture of their supply chain down to the farms, the mines, where the raw materials are sourced – and often where the biggest risks to the operations are,” Bonanni asserted.

“After the U.S. stepped up its enforcement and requirement that companies trace products coming from high-risk areas, Europe proposed similar laws, just last week in fact, that require supply chain mapping for a whole slew of raw materials being imported into the region,” Bonnani told Modern Shipper.

“We’re going to double down on the product advantage that we already have and add and expand to serve these new industries for whom supply chain traceability is really a critical need, whether it’s because of a compliance or regulatory challenge or because they’re having to procure these new materials for new industries,” he added.

Nearly 300 Baltimore Police Patrol Vehicles Need To Be Replaced, But Supply Chain Issues Causing Delays

Nearly 300 Baltimore Police patrol vehicles need to be replaced, but supply chain issues causing delays – Baltimore Sun The Baltimore Police Department said it needs to replace nearly 300 patrol vehicles, but supply chain issues around the world are keeping it from getting some new cars on the road. Due to shortages of computer parts and plastic components, the department is specifically facing delays in vehicle manufacturing and the availability of fittings needed for the docking stations for the patrol vehicle’s computers, police spokeswoman Amanda Krotki said in an email last month.

An additional 38 vehicles should be completed and delivered mid-spring, pending supply chain issues, she said.

The department’s fleet includes 2012 Chevy Caprices and Ford Interceptor sedan and utility vehicles from 2014 and 2018.

The department is working to update its vehicles as part of the reforms under the federal consent decree agreed to by the city after a U.S. Department of Justice investigation found a pattern on unconstitutional policing.

A recent report by the monitoring team that is helping the department implement reforms said the purchase of 80 new cars “Is significant because among officers’ chief complaints has been the poor condition of their cars, which, for patrol officers, effectively serve as their offices,” the report said.

Baltimore officers ride in patrol cars alone instead of doubling up, unless they are part of a specialized unit.

“We still have a single officer car concept in Baltimore unless we have, at the moment, a shortage of vehicles, which we often do,” Harrison said at a recent news conference.

Advertising Strategies For An Uncertain Supply Chain

Thanks to pandemic-era realities, including labor shortages, factory shutdowns, and a mismatch of supply and demand, our global supply chain is not functioning the way it used to.

There are an increasing number of supply chain issues, amounting to 11,642 disruptions worldwide – with North America having the highest share of disruptions at 47%. With port closures, weather-related issues, container shortages, and covid-related disruptions, supply chains have been hit hard.

While supply chain issues impact all of us as consumers, they bring about a particular set of challenges for advertisers.

Without a reliable supply chain, many retailers are struggling to redefine advertising strategies that will allow them to yield a return on investment.

Let’s look at some tips for advertisers navigating an uncertain supply chain.

Digital advertising has seen an increase, in part thanks to an uptick in online consumer activity during the pandemic, but also because it affords advertisers flexibility to pivot quickly when supply chain issues arise.

Traditional advertising partners, like media brands and agencies, are highly motivated to help you solve these advertising issues.

Overview, Importance, And Examples

A supply chain is an entire system of producing and delivering a product or service, from the very beginning stage of sourcing the raw materials to the final delivery of the product or service to end-users.

The supply chain lays out all aspects of the production process, including the activities involved at each stage, information that is being communicated, natural resources that are transformed into useful materials, human resources, and other components that go into the finished product or service.

Mapping out a supply chain is one of the critical steps in performing an External Analysis.

The importance of clearly laying out the supply chain is that it helps a company define its own market and decide where it wants to be in the future.

The supply chain enables a company to understand others that are involved in each of the stages, and thereby provides some insights on the attractiveness or competitiveness in industries the company might want to enter in the future.

Let’s look at two different examples of a supply chain.

The payment processors then come in and deal with payment transactions for the order, which actually opens up a new supply chain.

Supply Chain Definition

A supply chain is a network between a company and its suppliers to produce and distribute a specific product to the final buyer.

Supply chain management is a crucial process because an optimized supply chain results in lower costs and a faster production cycle.

A supply chain involves a series of steps involved to get a product or service to the customer.

An efficient supply chain management process requires reliable suppliers.

The shock to the system may help usher in a new era of increased communication and visibility between suppliers as well as efficient use of technology to expedite supply chain strategies.

Supply chain management refers to the oversight and control of all the activities required for a company to convert raw materials into finished products that are then sold to end-users.

A goal of supply chain management is to improve efficiency by coordinating the efforts of the various entities in the supply chain.

These electrolytes can have an imbalance, leading to either high or low levels.

High or low levels of electrolytes disrupt normal bodily functions and can lead to even life-threatening complications.

Calcitonin acts on bone cells to increase the calcium levels in the blood.

Hypocalcemia diagnosis requires checking the serum albumin level to correct for total calcium, and the diagnosis is when the corrected serum total calcium levels are less than 8.8 mg/dl, as in vitamin D deficiency or hypoparathyroidism.

CHecking serum calcium levels is a recommended test in post-thyroidectomy patients.

The acid-base status of the blood drives bicarbonate levels.

The kidneys predominantly regulate serum chloride levels.

Definition, List Of Electrolytes And Examples With Videos

Electrolytes are important body constituents because they,.

The major electrolytes in extracellular fluid, exert most of their influence outside the cell.

Electrolytes help to regulate water distribution, govern acid base balance and transmit nerve impulses.

The anode is a metal or substance in contact with the electrolyte capable of conducting an electric current and corrodes by combining with chemicals in the electrolytes.

The body fluids contain a variety of dissolved chemicals that may be categorized as either nonelectrolytes or electrolytes.

Even though electrolytes exist inside and outside only the levels outside the cell in the bloodstream are measured.

Definition Of Electrolyte By Medical Dictionary

Electrolyte a chemical substance that, when dissolved in water or melted, dissociates into electrically charged particles and thus is capable of conducting an electric current.

The terms for excessive and deficient blood levels of electrolytes are derived from the Greek prefixes hyper- and hypo-, the English or Latin name of the electrolyte, and the Latin suffix -emia.

ƒ. Stability of the electrolyte balance depends on adequate intake of water and the electrolytes, and on homeostatic mechanisms within the body that regulate the absorption, distribution, and excretion of water and its dissolved particles.

Even when the kidney structures are intact, electrolyte imbalances can result from an inadequate supply of blood to the nephrons or from imbalances of regulatory hormones such as aldosterone and antidiuretic hormone.

The effects of an electrolyte imbalance are not isolated to a particular organ or system.

Assessment and nursing interventions related to electrolyte imbalance are shown in the accompanying table.

Examples of electrolytes are sodium and potassium ions.

Electrolytes: Types, Purpose And Normal Levels

Test Details What tests help identify electrolyte problems?

Testing usually involves a broader type of test called a metabolic panel.

This is a broader test like the above metabolic panels, but it only looks for electrolytes.

The test compares the levels of specific electrolytes to see if there’s a difference between the measured levels of positive-charge and negative-charge electrolytes, which may be is a sign of certain conditions.

This test analyzes levels of magnesium in your blood.

In other cases, you may have a normal result, but symptoms you’re having and other test results will show you have a health problem.

You should also call your healthcare provider if you notice a sudden change in any symptoms related to any test done on your electrolyte levels.

An electrolyte is a medium containing ions that is electrically conducting through the movement of ions, but not conducting electrons.

An electrolyte in a solution may be described as “Concentrated” if it has a high concentration of ions, or “Diluted” if it has a low concentration.

If a high proportion of the solute dissociates to form free ions, the electrolyte is strong; if most of the solute does not dissociate, the electrolyte is weak.

Sodium is the main electrolyte found in extracellular fluid and potassium is the main intracellular electrolyte; both are involved in fluid balance and blood pressure control.

In oral rehydration therapy, electrolyte drinks containing sodium and potassium salts replenish the body’s water and electrolyte concentrations after dehydration caused by exercise, excessive alcohol consumption, diaphoresis, diarrhea, vomiting, intoxication or starvation.

When electrodes are placed in an electrolyte and a voltage is applied, the electrolyte will conduct electricity.

Lone electrons normally cannot pass through the electrolyte; instead, a chemical reaction occurs at the cathode, providing electrons to the electrolyte.

Electrolytes: Definition, Functions, Imbalance And Sources

You need to get an adequate amount of electrolytes from your diet to keep your body functioning as it should.

This article takes a detailed look at electrolytes, their functions, the risk of imbalance and possible sources.

The main food sources of electrolytes are fruits and vegetables.

Electrolytes like bicarbonate are naturally produced in your body, so you don’t need to worry about including them in your diet.

Some people drink electrolyte water or supplement with electrolytes like sodium and calcium to ensure they get enough.

A balanced diet that includes sources of electrolytes should suffice for most.

In some circumstances, such as during bouts of vomiting and diarrhea where electrolyte losses are excessive, supplementing with a rehydration solution that contains electrolytes could be useful.

Electrolytes: Sources, Benefits, Function And Signs Of Imbalance

Ready to learn more? Keep reading for a complete list of electrolytes, some common signs of an electrolyte imbalance and the best food sources to try to fit into your diet.

What Are Electrolytes? What Do They Do? According to Merriam-Webster, the official electrolytes definition is “a nonmetallic electric conductor in which current is carried by the movement of ions.”

Strong electrolytes, such as hydrochloric acid, ionize completely in a solution, while weak electrolytes ionize only partially.

In some cases, electrolytes can increase or decrease to levels above or below normal, which can cause an electrolytes imbalance.

Wondering how to replenish electrolytes to keep your levels in check? One of the simplest and most effective methods for how to get electrolytes is to follow a healthy diet and fill up on foods with electrolytes, such as fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds.

In addition to enjoying a variety of healthy foods, some people also choose to use supplements, such as electrolytes drinks or electrolyte powder, to help boost their intake of these important minerals.

Final Thoughts What are electrolytes? Electrolytes are particles that carry a positive or negative charge when dissolved in water.

KEMET Corporation, a subsidiary of Yageo Corporation,is an American company which manufactures a broad selection of capacitor technologies such as tantalum, aluminum, multilayer ceramic, film, paper, polymer electrolytic, and supercapacitors.

In 1919, KEMET Laboratories was founded by Union Carbide Corporation to capitalize on its purchase of Cooper Research Company of Cleveland, Ohio.

In 1958, KEMET changed its market focus to the tantalum capacitor.

In 1990, KEMET Electronics Corporation was acquired from Union Carbide and after two years, the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol KEM. This ended all ties with Union Carbide.

Oct. 2013 KEMET announced the opening of the new aluminum Electrolytic Innovation Center in Weymouth, U.K. Products made from this new center include 20 g High Vibration Screw Terminal capacitors and a Low Inductance product line under Film and Electrolytic Business.

Company History

Kemet became a stand-alone company with Union Carbide as a 50 percent shareholder.

The market switch from leaded to surface-mount capacitors complemented Kemet’s operations, because Kemet had long been a leader in the production of tantalum and ceramic capacitors; those two dielectrics are widely used with integrated circuits and possess characteristics that are particularly useful in surface-mount applications.

The name “Kemet” was derived from the words “Chemical” and “Metallurgy.” Kemet used the advanced alloy to create high-performance grid wires utilized in triode vacuum tubes; the grids were used to regulate the flow of current in triodes, which were the precursor to the transistor.

Evidencing the importance of Kemet’s role in the vacuum tube industry, the company supplied an estimated 80 percent of all the vacuum tubes consumed by the Allies during the war.

As described earlier, Union Carbide retained 50 percent of the newly formed Kemet Electronics Corporation until the company could get its feet on the ground, and former division head Dave Maguire took over as chief executive of the company.

In 1990 Union Carbide completely divested itself of Kemet shares, and Kemet management and other investors, including Citicorp Venture Capital, completed the leveraged buyout.

Not until 1992 did Kemet go public, as Kemet Corporation, with a stock offering on the NASDAQ over-the-counter market.

Public Water Systems

Public drinking water systems use various methods of water treatment to provide safe drinking water for their communities.

Typically, surface water requires more treatment and filtration than ground water because lakes, rivers, and streams contain more sediment and pollutants and are more likely to be contaminated than ground water.

To learn more about the different treatments for drinking water, see the National Drinking Water Clearinghouse’s Fact Sheet Series on Drinking Water TreatmentsExternal.

To learn more about the steps that are taken to make our water safe to drink, visit the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Public Drinking Water Systems webpageExternal.

The report provides information on your local drinking water quality, including the water’s source, contaminants found in the water, and how consumers can get involved in protecting drinking water.

Point-of-entry systems are typically installed after the water meter and treat most of the water entering a residence.

Point-of-use systems are systems that treat water in batches and deliver water to a tap, such as a kitchen or bathroom sink or an auxiliary faucet mounted next to a tap.

WATER TREATMENT 75 6.1.2 Reducing the concentration of chemicals in water Iron and manganese Water collected from boreholes can have a high concentration of iron.

WATER TREATMENT 77 6.2.5 Potential problems – the water becomes recontaminated after boiling; – fuel for boiling the water is scarce and expensive; – boiled water tastes flat – this may be corrected by adding herbs to the water during boiling and not drinking it for six hours after it has been boiled.

6.3.5 Potential problems – water quality drops if the flow rate through the filter is too high; – if the water flow is interrupted for more than a few hours, or if the surface of the filter runs dry, beneficial microorganisms in the filter may die and the effectiveness of the filter may be impaired; – excessive turbidity in the raw water can cause the filter to clog rapidly, in which case a pre-filter may be needed; 6.

WATER TREATMENT 79 – when water quality is very poor, harmful and bad-tasting products like ammonia may be formed in the lower layers of the filter; – smooth vertical surfaces in the filter tank may cause short circuits in the water flow, producing badly-filtered water; – in some regions, sand is expensive or difficult to get – as an alternative, other materials such as burnt rice husks can be used; – household slow sand filters require a substantial investment and dedicated O&M, and can thus be expensive.

6.5.2 Main O&M activities Usually, water will be let in to the storage reservoir every day or continuously, but when the water quality becomes too poor and there is sufficient water stored in the reservoir, the water intake may be stopped temporarily.

WATER TREATMENT 85 6.7 Slow sand filtration1 6.7.1 The technology The treatment of water by slow sand filtration combines biological, chemical and physical processes when the water slowly passes downwards through a bed of sand.

WATER TREATMENT 89 6.8.5 Potential problems – chlorination is less effective in alkaline water; – when the water contains excessive organic matter or suspended material, it will need to be pretreated; – the cost and availability of chlorine compounds can be serious limitations; – chlorination affects the taste of water and for this reason the water may be rejected by consumers who have not been informed; – on the other hand, users may believe a chlorine taste indicates that the water has been disinfected, but water can still taste of chlorine even when not enough has been added to purify it.

ScienceDirect Topics

The waste water treatment is a process phase aimed at the conversion of wastewater into an effluent suitable to be returned to the water cycle with minimum impact on the environment-in accordance with the impurity concentrations defined by the international and national laws-or directly reused.

A common water treatment plant involves the following processes: pretreatment to remove big objects that can be found in the pipelines that transport water from the supply to the treatment plant, softening and/or coagulation for the removal of hardness and/or suspended particles, filtering through sand beds to remove any fine particles that are left in the water stream, activated carbon filter or air/water jet to sorb or oxidize any dissolved organic matter, disinfection for the removal of any pathogens left, and storage of the disinfected water before distribution to the consumers.

Membrane technology is useful for recovering clean water from polluted water.

Water treatment in existing installations uses immersed membrane modules that are simply placed in water tanks where a vacuum at the permeate side drives the collection of purified water.

Increasing waste water loads on existing plants and more stringent government discharge requirements have put considerable pressure on the food-processing industry to refine and understand better the design and management of biological waste water treatment processes.

Some high purity surface and ground waters may have very low raw water coliform counts where post-chlorination alone may be sufficient treatment for pathogen control so long as there are no other water quality problem.

Water is loaded onto the surface of the filter at a sufficient depth to provide the necessary hydraulic head to force the water through the filter giving the water a hydraulic retention time of about 2 h. The flow through rate is very slow giving a loading rate of <0.1 m3 m2 h−1 which means that large areas of filters are required.

Water Treatment

To address water scarcity issues, it is required to recover water from current wastewater or develop alternate water sources for human consumption.

Treatment for drinking water production involves the removal of contaminants and/or inactivation of any potentially harmful microbes from raw water to produce water that is pure enough for human consumption without any short term or long term risk of any adverse health effect.

Two of the main processes of industrial water treatment are boiler water treatment and cooling water treatment.

Boiler water treatment is a type of industrial water treatment focused on removal or chemical modification of substances potentially damaging to the boiler.

The water would flow up through these tubes or plates, allowing the clear water to flow over into an effluent launder, which would then carry the “Settled” water to the filters for further treatment.

Water Services Regulation Authority is the economic regulator of the water sector; it protects the interests of consumers by promoting effective competition and ensuring that water companies carry out their statutory functions.

The Drinking Water Inspectorate provides independent assurance that the privatised water industry delivers safe, clean drinking water to consumers.

Water Treatment Process

The utility’s water treatment plant was built in 1920-1922, since then it has been enlarged, modernized, and provides up-to-date treatment techniques to ensure high quality drinking water.

Chemical reactions begin to change certain of the hardness compounds in the water from soluble to insoluble precipitates called “Floc.” Floc absorbs color and entangles bacteria and other suspended matter.

Here, the velocity of the water is reduced, allowing the floc to settle rapidly to the bottom and the clear water to flow over the top of the basin.

The settled floc is called spent lime and eventually flows to the dewatering plant, where the solids are separated and the remaining water content is recycled to the plant.

Filters Water is then distributed to 24 filter units.

Gravity pushes water through the filter and any remaining particulate matter is trapped in the filter.

Filtered water is collected from the bottom of each filter and routed to the disinfection step.

Types Of Water Treatment

Factors such as where you are located and the purpose of the water will determine what type of water treatment is used.

These regulations make up the rules for all kinds of filtration and water treatment.

Let’s take a look at the different types of water treatment that can be used.

The natural water from rivers, streams, lakes, and underground, as well as the water that flows through sewers and other sources can be full of dangerous contaminants.

Point of entry systems are usually installed just after the water meter and will treat the water as it enters the building.

The general principles of water treatment are typically the same and are all used to keep communities safe from water-born diseases and provide safe drinking water for everyone.

If you want more information on water treatment, check out Advanced Water Solutions’ other blogs, such as this one that goes over the details of one type of filtration, reverse osmosis.

Water Treatment

American Water’s treatment and delivery of water is an intricate and involved process.

Our scientists test water samples from across the country to protect against viruses, microbes, hazardous chemicals, algae, metals, minerals and other potential contaminants.

Coagulation: Alum and other chemicals are added to water to form tiny, sticky particles called “Floc,” which attracts dirt and other particles suspended in water.

Sedimentation: The heavy floc particles settle to the bottom of treatment tanks, allowing for their separation from the water.

Filtration: The water passes through filters of sand, gravel and charcoal to help remove even smaller particles.

Storage: Water is placed in a closed tank or reservoir to allow for disinfection.

Water then flows through pipes to homes and businesses in the community.

Wastewater Treatment Water Use

We consider wastewater treatment as a water use because it is so interconnected with the other uses of water.

If the term “Wastewater treatment” is confusing to you, you might think of it as “Sewage treatment.” Nature has an amazing ability to cope with small amounts of water wastes and pollution, but it would be overwhelmed if we didn’t treat the billions of gallons of wastewater and sewage produced every day before releasing it back to the environment.

FISHERIES: Clean water is critical to plants and animals that live in water.

Visitors are drawn to water activities such as swimming, fishing, boating and picnicking.

Since we live, work and play so close to water, harmful bacteria have to be removed to make water safe.

These impacts can include harm to fish and wildlife populations, oxygen depletion, beach closures and other restrictions on recreational water use, restrictions on fish and shellfish harvesting and contamination of drinking water.

The major aim of wastewater treatment is to remove as much of the suspended solids as possible before the remaining water, called effluent, is discharged back to the environment.

Wastewater treatment refers to the physical, chemical, and biological processes used to remove pollutants from wastewater before discharging it into a waterbody.

Since the Clean Water Act was issued in 1972, there are now more than 16,000 publicly owned wastewater treatment plants in operation in the United States.

The continual construction of new plants and the upgrading of older plants create a strong demand for highly skilled operators and designers.

Wastewater Treatment

Wastewater treatment is the process of improving the quality of wastewater and converting it into an effluent that can be either returned to the nature or incorporated to the water cycle with minimum environmental issues or that can be reused.

In this short account, we discuss the nature of wastewater and current wastewater treatment technology, the principle of the MFC, and how could this biotechnology be applied to the sustainable treatment of wastewater provided fundamental and applied research address identified current technological locks.

There are several other reasons for retrofitting of existing CAS treatment plants, such as the life span expiry, increase in wastewater load or flow, pathogens removal goals, and stringent discharge standards of treated wastewater.

MBR technology has not only attracted a lot of attention for the implementation of new wastewater treatment plants but also in upgrading tasks of already existing treatment plants.

The new goals for wastewater treatment plant design and operations should: achieve existing public health and environmental goals, maximize energy recovery from wastewater, and preserve or recover nutrients for reuse [1,2].In this context, bioelectrochemical systems present a convenient platform for energy-positive wastewater treatment.

Usually, wastewater treatment will involve collecting the wastewater in a central, segregated location and subjecting the wastewater to various treatment processes.

Most often, since large volumes of wastewater are involved, treatment processes are carried out on continuously flowing wastewaters rather than as “Batch” or a series of periodic treatment processes in which treatment is carried out on parcels or “Batches” of wastewaters.

Process, History, Importance, Systems, & Technologies

Wastewater treatment, also called sewage treatment, the removal of impurities from wastewater, or sewage, before it reaches aquifers or natural bodies of water such as rivers, lakes, estuaries, and oceans.

Since pure water is not found in nature, any distinction between clean water and polluted water depends on the type and concentration of impurities found in the water as well as on its intended use.

In broad terms, water is said to be polluted when it contains enough impurities to make it unfit for a particular use, such as drinking, swimming, or fishing.

Although water quality is affected by natural conditions, the word pollution usually implies human activity as the source of contamination.

Water pollution is caused primarily by the drainage of contaminated wastewater into surface water or groundwater, and wastewater treatment is a major element of water pollution control.

It used to be said that “The solution to pollution is dilution.” When small amounts of sewage are discharged into a flowing body of water, a natural process of stream self-purification occurs.

Also beginning in the 1900s, new sewage-collection systems were designed to separate storm water from domestic wastewater, so that treatment plants did not become overloaded during periods of wet weather.

Wastewater Treatment

For industrial wastewater, treatment either takes place in a separate industrial wastewater treatment plant, or in a sewage treatment plant.

Further types of wastewater treatment plants include agricultural wastewater treatment plants and leachate treatment plants.

The main by-product from wastewater treatment plants is a type of sludge which is usually treated in the same or another wastewater treatment plant.

Sewage treatment often involves two main stages, called primary and secondary treatment, while advanced treatment also incorporates a tertiary treatment stage with polishing processes and nutrient removal.

Treatment options include: biological treatment, mechanical treatment by ultrafiltration, treatment with active carbon filters, electrochemical treatment including electrocoagulation by various proprietary technologies and reverse osmosis membrane filtration using disc tube module technology.

Gravity separation of solids is the primary treatment of sewage, where the unit process is called “Primary settling tanks” or “Primary sedimentation tanks.” It is also widely used for the treatment of other types of wastewater.

Anaerobic wastewater treatment processes are also widely applied in the treatment of industrial wastewaters and biological sludge.

What Is Wastewater Treatment And Process Of Wastewater Treatment

Wastewater treatment is the process of converting wastewater – water that is no longer needed or is no longer suitable for use – into bilge water that can be discharged back into the environment.

There are two wastewater treatment plants namely chemical or physical treatment plants, and biological wastewater treatment plants.

While Biological treatment systems are ideal for treating wastewater from households and business premises, Physical wastewater treatment plants are mostly used to treat wastewater from industries, factories, and manufacturing firms.

“Wastewater treatment is a process used to remove contaminants from wastewater or sewage and convert it into an effluent that can be returned to the water cycle with minimum impact on the environment, or directly reused. The latter is called water reclamation because treated wastewater can be used for other purposes. The treatment process takes place in a wastewater treatment plant, often referred to as a Water Resource Recovery Facility or a Sewage Treatment Plant. Pollutants in municipal wastewater are removed or broken down.”

After the primary treatment stage and the secondary treatment process, there are still some diseases causing organisms in the remaining treated wastewater.

In summary, the wastewater treatment process is one of the most important environmental conservation processes that should be encouraged worldwide.

Most wastewater treatment plants treat wastewater from homes and business places.

Electric Car

An electric car or battery electric car is an automobile that is propelled by one or more electric motors, using energy stored in batteries.

The Tesla Model 3 became the world’s all-time best-selling electric car in early 2020, and in June 2021, became the first electric car to pass 1 million global sales.

Robert Anderson is often credited with inventing the first electric car some time between 1832 and 1839, but the first practical electric cars appeared in the 1880s.

To allow for this, some cars with dual electric motors have one electric motor with a gear optimised for city speeds and the second electric motor with a gear optimised for highway speeds.

Its Model S was the world’s top selling plug-in electric car in 2015 and 2016, and its Model 3 has been the world’s best selling plug-in electric car for three years in a row, from 2018 to 2020.

China has the largest all-electric car fleet in use, with 2.58 million at the end of 2019, more than half of the world’s electric car stock.

Financial incentives for consumers are aiming to make electric car purchase price competitive with conventional cars due to the higher upfront cost of electric vehicles.

Ford Will Split Electric Vehicles, Legacy Autos Into Separate Units As It Works To Boost Electric Business

DETROIT – Ford Motor Company announced on Wednesday that it is changing the way it does business and electric vehicles will lead the way.

The company is making the decision to split the company under one roof as opposed to spinning off the electric business the way Wall Street wanted.

Ford is looking to give its electric vehicle business all the help and room it needs to grow while it winds down its internal combustion vehicle division over time.

Earlier last year, Ford created the Ford Pro division for commercial vehicles.

Now, alongside it is Ford Model E for its electric vehicles and Ford Blue, for its internal combustion engine business they call ICE.Ford plans to ramp up electric vehicle production to 2 million vehicles a year by 2026.

Ad.”Our corporate structure is holding us back. It does not allow us to focus. We need the ICE business to be cash generating and serving those iconic brands and we need our electric business and digital business to be about innovation,” Farley said.

Auto analyst Sam Abuelsamid said Ford is inspired by Tesla to make these moves, much like what it did with the Ford Mustang Mach-E.”And then they pivoted and essentially copied almost the entire Tesla playbook for how they do product development and that’s what they are trying to expand on now and have a more nimble, more agile process,” Abuelsamid said.

Ford Named Its New Electric-Car Business What Elon Musk Wanted To Call The Tesla Model 3

The name Ford chose for the latter should ring a bell for Elon Musk.

The gasoline division will be called Ford Blue, while its EV counterpart will be known as Ford Model e, a name the Detroit automaker stopped Tesla from using nearly a decade ago.

After the release of Tesla’s Model S and Model X, Musk planned to name the company’s third major vehicle the Model E. “A friend asked me at a party, ‘What are you going to name the third-generation car?’ Well, we have the S and the X, so we might as well make it the E,” Musk told CNN Money in 2014.

Ford called up Musk threatening to sue if Tesla pursued the Model E trademark, he told the outlet.

Tesla and Ford entered a contract in 2010 that prohibited Tesla from using the Model E name, and the companies resolved the dispute amicably, a Ford spokesperson told CNN Money.

Ford has sued to keep companies from using the Model E name, arguing it sounds too similar to the Model T. Ford sold cars including the Model A, B, C, F, and K, but never a Model E. In 2000, Ford sued a car-leasing startup called Model E. Tesla kept with the suggestive theme anyway, coming out with the Model 3 sedan instead, and later the Model Y SUV. Ford says that splitting into two units will help boost profits and streamline operations.

Ford said the new structure will help it nearly double profit margins by 2026, the same year it plans to produce more than 2 million electric cars.

Ford Will Split Company In Two As It Ramps Up EV Production

Ford has announced that it will split its company into two separate entities – a “Model e division” featuring its electric fleet as well as a “Blue division” for its legacy line of cars powered by the internal combustion engine.

Jim Farley, the chief executive officer of Ford Motor Co., will lead the electric division while retaining his title as CEO. “We are going all in, creating separate but complementary businesses that give us start-up speed and unbridled innovation in Ford Model e together with Ford Blue’s industrial know-how, volume and iconic brands like Bronco, that start-ups can only dream about,” Farley said.

“Ford Model e will be Ford’s center of innovation and growth, a team of the world’s best software, electrical and automotive talent turned loose to create truly incredible electric vehicles and digital experiences for new generations of Ford customers,” he said.

Last fall, Ford announced that it would be investing $11.4 billion in four new US plants – one of which would be used to build electric trucks.

Ford said the investment will enable it to produce more than one million electric vehicles a year in the second half of this decade and is part of a commitment to invest at least $30 billion in electric vehicles through 2025.

Ford’s strategy is to boost its share of the emerging EV market as it competes with the likes of Elon Musk’s Tesla and other legacy carmakers like General Motors, which is also investing heavily in its transition to battery-powered vehicles.

Ford has already charged into the development of electric vehicles with the Ford GT, Mustang Mach-E SUV and F-150 Lightning pickup.

Electric Car Fire Risks Look Exaggerated, But More Data Required For Definitive Verdict

The fire risk from electric cars appears to be less than for conventional vehicles, although Americans awaiting their new Volkswagens to be delivered from Europe could be forgiven for doubting that as their new cars were destroyed, apparently by a spontaneous lithium-ion battery fire on the Felicity Ace car transporter ship.

Any firm conclusions on fire risks generally are not yet possible because there is not enough data to decide that pure electric cars are more prone to spontaneous fire than internal combustion engine ones, or more likely to burst into flames after an accident.

As for the fire on VW’s car transporter from Germany to the U.S. carrying almost 4,000 vehicles, probably including battery-electric Porsche Taycans, Audi e-Trons and VW ID.4s, a report in Britain’s Daily Mail quoted the Felicity Ace’s captain Joao Mendes Cabecas saying lithium-ion batteries in the electric cars on board caught fire.

As the battery electric vehicle revolution gathers pace, spontaneous fires, or electric car fires after accidents, have attracted media attention.

AutoinsuranceEZ said the numbers showed electric cars were less prone to fire than other vehicles, with hybrids the most dangerous, followed by gasoline vehicles.

“It is still too early to make any conclusions about EVs and spontaneity of fires. I just don’t think we have the sample size of data or the reporting structure for fires to say with any certainty. What is clear is that the fire is more difficult to deal with, the energy release during the exotherm of the electrolyte takes a lot of cooling to extinguish,” Conway said.

“The NTSB data said that after 41 fatal collisions involving BEVs, 1 caught on fire. The NTSB data said that after 20,315 fatal collisions involving gasoline vehicles, 644 caught on fire. The NTSB data said that after 543 fatal collisions involving gasoline hybrid vehicles, 12 caught on fire,” Conway said.

Biosimilar Drugs For Cancer Treatment

Immunotherapy and targeted therapy drugs are examples of biologic drugs used in cancer treatment.

Generic drugs work the same way and can be used in the same ways as their brand name drugs.

While all biosimilar drugs go through the same initial FDA approval process, and they can be used to treat a disease once they get initial approval, it needs another, special FDA approval to be considered interchangeable before it can be substituted automatically for its brand name drug.

A biosimilar drug that is not approved as interchangeable needs a prescription to be written specifically for the biosimilar to be used instead of its brand name drug.

Researchers and Congress think one benefit to biosimilar drugs is that they might lead to lower drug costs by offering patients more options for treatment.

It also depends on what types of diseases are able to be treated with biosimilar drugs and how much the approved drugs are used.

In the next several years, the number of biosimilar drugs approved to treat cancer is expected to go up.

What Is A Biosimilar?

A biosimilar is a manufactured biologic considered similar enough to an existing medicine that regulators can’t find a clinically meaningful difference from the reference product.

At least that’s been the trend outside the U.S., where regulatory pathways to biosimilar approval have been in place much longer.

The FDA granted approval to the first U.S. biosimilar, Zarxio from Novartis, on March 6, 2015, just a few weeks ahead of the ACA’s fifth anniversery.

Because of a mandatory six-month waiting period following biosimilar approval, Zarxio, which references Amgen’s Neupogen, didn’t begin its commercial launch until September 2015 and hasn’t announced its sales figures in the U.S. yet.

In the EU, the same biosimilar earned marketing approval under the name Zarzio in 2009, and Amgen’s annual sales of Neupogen recorded outside the U.S. have slid from a high of $445 million in 2008 to $256 million in 2015.

Based on the gradual erosion of sales we’ve seen outside the U.S., biosimilar sales are going to be more of a thorn in biologic drugmakers’ sides than bullet wounds.

For companies with the resources to develop and commercialize biosimilars, such as Novartis, they could be an important source of revenue in the years ahead. One trend you’ll want to keep an eye on is FDA labeling of biosimilars as interchangeable biological products.

A biosimilar is a biologic medical product that is almost an identical copy of an original product that is manufactured by a different company.

In March 2020, most protein products that were approved as drug products are scheduled to open up to biosimilar and interchangeable competition in the United States.

The typical reference product has undergone numerous changes in its manufacturing processes, and such changes in the manufacturing process was substantiated with appropriate data and was approved by the EMA. The current concept of development of biosimilar mAbs follows the principle that an extensive state of the art physicochemical, analytical and functional comparison of the molecules is complemented by comparative non-clinical and clinical data that establish equivalent efficacy and safety in a clinical “Model” indication that is most sensitive to detect any minor differences between the biosimilar and its reference mAb also at the clinical level.

The European Medicines Agency has recognized this fact, which has resulted in the establishment of the term “Biosimilar” in recognition that, whilst biosimilar products are similar to the original product, they are not exactly the same.

In the European Union, no unique identifier of a biosimilar medicine product is required, as the same rules are followed as for all biologics.

Biosimilars have found it difficult to get market share, which led biosimilar developer Pfizer to sue Johnson & Johnson over anticompetitive contracts with pharmacy benefit managers which bundle discounts; these are sometimes called the “Rebate wall”, and the rebates are generally unavailable to customers.

Even though the biosimilars market is rising, the price drop for biological drugs at risk of patent expiration will not be as great as for other generic drugs; in fact it has been estimated that the price for biosimilar products will be 65%-85% of their originators.

What Are Biosimilars? Top Facts You May Not Know

According to the RAND Corporation, biosimilars could save the U.S. health system close to $54 billion on biologics spending from 2017 to 2026.

In 2018, the first U.S. biosimilars for Neulasta were given the go-ahead by the FDA. In June 2018, the FDA approved Mylan’s and Biocon’s Fulphila.

In January 2017 the FDA issued a guidance on naming conventions for biosimilars.

Biosimilars can be dispensed in place of another biological product if a physician or other healthcare professional specifically prescribes the biosimilar product by name.

Biosimilars designated as interchangeable will have no clinically important differences from the original product.

How payers – and patients – will handle the burgeoning cost of biologics and biosimilars is a question that must be answered.

Biosimilars have been available in Europe for years, and there have been some product-related and clinical issues raised with biosimilars.

Biosimilar Regulatory Roundup: February 2022

February kicked off with a number of regulatory updates from around the world, including the FDA acceptance of applications for interchangeable adalimumab biosimilars, Health Canada’s approval of Ontruzant, and more.

A panel discussion during the AAM Access! 2022 Annual Meeting dove into the many regulatory actions that policymakers could take to address confusion surrounding interchangeability designations for biosimilars.

Pfizer’s application concerns a low-concentration biosimilar.

Ontruzant represents the fifth Samsung Bioepis biosimilar and the third trastuzumab biosmilar to be approved for the Canadian market.

Shortly after the approval, Nova Scotia became the fifth Canadian province to announce the implementation of a biosimilar switching program.

The switches occurred as part of the country’s adoption of a national health plan that required patients to switch from the reference product to a biosimilar.

On a greater European level, Prestige Biopharma received a European Union Good Manufacturing Practices certification for its facility that manufactures Tuznue, the company’s trastuzumab biosimilar candidate.

Interestingly, both the bevacizumab and ranibizumab groups had 2 cases of endophthalmitis for a 0.02% infection rate for each group.

The IVAN trial showed serious adverse effects to be 12.5% in the bevacizumab group while the CATT trial showed SAE rate of 40%. The Bevacizumab or Laser Therapy trial, which compared bevacizumab versus macular laser, showed approximately 5% SAE in the bevacizumab group and 10% in the laser group.

Ranibizumab has a higher affinity to binding VEGF than does bevacizumab, however bevacizumab has two binding sites per molecule, while ranibizumab only has one.

It has been shown that at clinical doses, bevacizumab and ranibizumab are equally potent at binding VEGF. The incidence of serious systemic adverse effects are rare with both intravitreal bevacizumab and ranibizumab.

The CATT and IVAN trials showed no difference in treatment effect between these two drugs in AMD. However, due to the longer half-life, bevacizumab also persists longer systemically in the serum, which may be an explanation for the increased systemic adverse effects seen in the CATT trial in the bevacizumab groups, if indeed this was a real effect.

Drug Information

Bevacizumab is classified as a “Monoclonal antibody” and “Anti-angiogenesis” drug.

What Bevacizumab Is Used For: Treatment of metastatic colon or rectal cancer, used as part of a combination chemotherapy regimen.

How Bevacizumab Is Given: Bevacizumab is given through an infusion into a vein.

The amount of Bevacizumab that you will receive depends on many factors, including your height and weight, your general health or other health problems, and the type of cancer or condition being treated.

Bevacizumab Precautions: Before starting Bevacizumab treatment, make sure you tell your doctor about any other medications you are taking.

Do not receive any kind of immunization or vaccination without your doctor’s approval while taking Bevacizumab.

You will be checked regularly by your health care professional while you are taking Bevacizumab, to monitor side effects and check your response to therapy.

8 Semi-Trailer Types & What They’Re Used For

While the truck may be the engine, the trailer carries the load and it’s important to select a compatible trailer to do the job at hand.

Step deck trailers, also known as drop deck trailers, are similar to flatbed trailers in that they are an open trailer but do have some differences.

Dump trailers are a type of hauling trailer that use hydraulics to lift the trailer bed up and tilt it to unload heavy hauls with ease and the help of gravity.

Although dump trailers are oftentimes confused with dump trucks, dump trailers allow you to customize the trailer size to correspond to your load. Dump trailers are less expensive than dump trucks but still offer the ability to haul heavy payloads safely and efficiently.

Bottom dump trailers are not suitable for all types of materials considering fine material and liquid will likely leak out and the axles of the trailer must be able to clear the windrow.

Freight is loaded at the rear of the dry van trailer and a loading dock is commonly used.

Whether you’re looking to rent or buy, Hale Trailer Brake & Wheel, Inc. has the largest selection of semi-trailer types.

A road tractor coupled to a semi-trailer is often called a semi-trailer truck or “Semi” in North America & Australia, and an articulated lorry or “Artic” in the UK. Semi-trailers with two trailer units are called B-doubles or tandem tractor-trailers, tandem rigs, or doubles.

Compared with a full trailer, a semi-trailer attached to a tractor unit is easier to reverse, since it has only one turning point, whereas a full trailer has two turning points.

As the tractor reverses under the trailer, a kingpin under the front of the trailer slides into a slot in the skid plate, and the jaws of the fifth wheel close onto it.

Bus-bodied trailers are hitched to a tractor unit to form a trailer bus, a simple alternative to building a rigid bus.

Conestoga trailers are a special form of a flatbed trailer with a flexible retractable roof and siding used to carry large pieces of equipment that can only be lifted by an overhead crane, but which also need protection from the weather during transit.

Double-deck trailers are generally a step-frame construction with the majority being either box or curtain siders, with box trailers having either a fixed or movable deck, and curtain sides having either a fixed or hinged second deck; this hinged second deck generally swings into a position down the length of the trailer and can be divided into two or three sections to allow greater load flexibility.

Live bottom trailers have a conveyor belt on the bottom of the trailer tub that pushes the load material out of the back of the trailer.

Types Of Semi Trailers And What They Are Used For

Semi-trailers aren’t only used to haul basic goods and services.

Dry vans are semi-trailers with a closed trailer box.

Flatbeds are the most popular types of semi-trailers.

Power Only Trailers are semi-trailers with adjustable fifth wheels.

Step-deck semi-trailers are commonly used to transport building materials and large equipment.

Semi-trailers are popularly used as container vans to deliver goods and services.

Flatbed semi-trailers are commonly used to haul construction equipment.

What Is Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride

What is CPVC? Conceptually, CPVC is a PVC homopolymer that has been subjected to a chlorination reaction.

CPVC resin is then infused with additives to enhance many of the CPVC resin’s inherent properties, while easing its processability.

Basic Physical Properties of CPVC. CPVC pipes are inherently inert to acids, bases, salts and aliphatic hydrocarbons, all of which tend to eat away at metals.

Common Applications of CPVC. The inherent chemical resistance of CPVC, coupled with its temperature and pressure resistance, enable its use in a variety of industrial and commercial applications.

Although CPVC as an industrial piping material has a long, proven history, not all CPVC systems perform equally.

While some bottom-line benefits of CPVC are common regardless of manufacturer, CPVC compounds are often differentiated by the level of performance they provide.

In the same way that two different types of industrial metallic pipe will likely perform differently, it is safe to assume that two CPVC industrial pipes made from different compounds will yield different results.

Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride

Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride is a thermoplastic produced by chlorination of polyvinyl chloride resin, which is significantly more flexible and can withstand higher temperatures than standard PVC. Uses include hot and cold water delivery pipes and industrial liquid handling.

The original tetrahydrofuran / methyl ethyl ketone formulas for CPVC cements were developed by Genova in conjunction with the B.F. Goodrich Company, the original developer of the CPVC resin.

Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride is PVC that has been chlorinated via a free radical chlorination reaction.

The chlorine content may vary from manufacturer to manufacturer; the base can be as low as PVC 56.7% to as high as 74% by mass, although most commercial resins have chlorine content from 63% to 69%. As the chlorine content in CPVC is increased, its glass transition temperature increases significantly.

The principal mechanical difference between CPVC and PVC is that CPVC is significantly more ductile, allowing greater flexure and crush resistance.

Working pressure 450 psi 450 psi 630 psi 630 psi Tensile strength 8,200 psi 7,500 psi 8,200 psi 7,500 psi Temperature limits 33-200 °F 33-140 °F 33-200 °F 33-140 °F. Additionally, CPVC is a thermoplastic and as such has greater insulation than that of copper pipes.

Due to its chlorine content, the incineration of CPVC, either in a fire or in an industrial disposal process, can result in the creation of chlorinated dioxins and the similarly dangerous polychlorinated dibenzofurans, both which bioaccumulate.

What Is CPVC Pipe?

These approvals guarantee that a CPVC potable water system does not transfer any harmful and dangerous products to the drinking water it transports.

Joint Strength: CPVC pipe and fittings are fused together using solvent cement.

Biofilm Resistance: Water distribution systems are ideal for bacterial growth, but CPVC helps to keep water pure.

Multiple international studies have confirmed that CPVC consistently outperforms copper and all other plastic piping materials, especially PPR, with regard to its ability to resist the formation of biofilms.

It’s important to point out that not all CPVC piping is the same.

Post Idea #17: Public offering

Public Offering Legal Definition Of Public Offering

In contrast, a public offering is made to the public at large and is governed by federal and state regulations.

Until the 1930s the public offering of securities was subject to minimal regulation.

The Securities Act of 1933, enacted after the Stock Market crash of 1929 and the resulting Great Depression, set in place rules and regulations for public offerings of securities in interstate commerce or through the mails.

Before a public offering can be made, a company must file with the Securities and Exchange Commission a registration statement containing financial and other data, including the price at which shares will be offered to the public, commissions paid to those who underwrite the security, and any options to purchase that have been issued.

Unless a company files a registration statement that is then approved by the commission, it cannot legally make the public offering.

Many states require registration of securities before a public offering can be made.

If the business seems likely to commit fraudulent acts involving prospective purchasers of its securities, state registration will be denied, and the public offering will not be allowed to go forward.

Public Offering Definition

A public offering is the sale of equity shares or other financial instruments such as bonds to the public in order to raise capital.

Generally, any sale of securities to more than 35 people is deemed to be a public offering, and thus requires the filing of registration statements with the appropriate regulatory authorities.

The term public offering is equally applicable to a company’s initial public offering, as well as subsequent offerings.

An initial public offering is the first time a private company issues corporate stock to the public.

A secondary offering is when a company that has already made an initial public offering issues a new set of corporate shares to the public.

Two types of secondary offerings exist: the first is a non-dilutive secondary offering, and the second is a dilutive secondary offering.

A dilutive secondary offering involves creating new shares and offering them for public sale.

Public Offering Definition & Example

A public offering is a process of issuing new securities for sale to the public.

Let’s say the founders of Company XYZ want to sell half of their shares.

Which determines the value of the shares and creates an offering memorandum.

Which facilitates the sale of the shares to the public via the stock.

Is the first of its kind for a company, this is called an initial public offering.

That public offerings are not limited to stock offerings, however; bonds.

A variety of other securities also circulate via public offerings.

Delta Lifeboat captain John Horton wants to continue offering the vessel’s lifesaving services – but needs the public’s help to ensure the crew can continue.

In addition to saving lives, the Delta Lifeboat, which is part of the Canadian Lifeboat Institute, also offers volunteer support and assistance to Delta’s emergency services, the Canadian Coast Guard, Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue, fishermen, commercial shipping and recreational boaters.

In addition to limited fundraising abilities, unexpected maintenance costs for CLI’s two vessels, the Delta Lifeboat and Fraser Lifeboat, has pushed them to put out an “Urgent appeal” to raise $40,000 for the Delta Lifeboat’s expenses.

“We have to make sure that our lifeboats are, of course, in tip top condition, so that we can continue to do our lifesaving work. The Fraser River here, which is where we operate two of our lifeboats out of the mouth of the Fraser River, it is actually one of the leading search and rescue areas in the whole of Canada. There’s a lot of lives lost here over the years, so it’s really important that we support the Coast Guard and other search and rescue organizations,” says Horton.

The funds will go towards fuel, training crew members and all things needed to make the Ladner Harbor-based Delta Lifeboat functional in its many roles.

Since the pandemic, Horton has noticed a significant increase of people buying recreational vessels, particularly to go fishing off the mouth of the Fraser River.

“A lot of these people are absolutely brand new to boating … there’s a lot of people out there that don’t know what they’re doing, which has added not only to us helping people, but having to be there and keeping our eyes open to make sure that if somebody gets into trouble, there’s assistance at hand,” he says.

Public Offering

A public offering is the offering of securities of a company or a similar corporation to the public.

In most jurisdictions, a public offering requires the issuing company to publish a prospectus detailing the terms and rights attached to the offered security, as well as information on the company itself and its finances.

Initial public offering is one type of public offering.

Non-initial public offering of equity is also called seasoned equity offering.

Shortly before the offering actually takes place, the company informs the public of material changes in its finances and outlook since the publication of the shelf prospectus.

Most public offerings are in the primary market, that is, the issuing company itself is the offerer of securities to the public.

A secondary market offering is still a public offering with much the same requirements, including a prospectus.
