The acquisition of the Santa Rita nickel mine and Serrote copper mine was meant to bolster Sibanye’s battery metals portfolio as the miner seeks to diversify away from platinum and gold.

Sibanye-Stillwater turns lower after reporting its platinum group metals and gold resources for its South African operations fell in 2021 from a year earlier.

The miner said total PGM resources fell to 318.7M oz at year-end 2021 from 391.9M oz.

In 2020, which includes resources in the measured, indicated and inferred categories across both the Americas and Southern Africa operations.

South African PGM operations have mineral resources of 174.7M oz of platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold, and mineral reserves of 32.2M oz of 4E, while South African gold mineral resources fell 7% to 74.6M oz and mineral reserves decreased 15.9% to 13.1M oz.

APPIAN Capital Advisory is to sue Sibanye-Stillwater for at least $1.2bn following the South African firm’s decision to terminate the purchase two base metal mines.

Announcing the deal termination in January, Sibanye-Stillwater said “a geotechnical event” at the Santa Rita nickel mine had drastically reduced the six year life of its open pit by two or three years.

Sibanye-Stillwater responded to Appian’s statement today saying its timing was designed to create a trial by media situation ahead of its full-year results presentation.

Sibanye-Stillwater agreed in October to buy Atlantic Nickel and Mineração Vale Verde, companies that hold Santa Rita as well as Serrote, a copper mine that is ramping up to full production.

“To justify its termination, Sibanye incorrectly stated, both to Appian and the public, that a material and adverse event had occurred at the Santa Rita mine. Appian believes this characterisation is false, damaging and defamatory.”

Sibanye-Stillwater said in the wake of the Atlantic Nickel and MVV terminations that it would press ahead with its diversification plans, although it might be harder to progress.

The timing of Appian’s announcement to pursue legal claim was described by Sibanye-Stillwater as “An apparent effort to disrupt the announcement of our results, and to engage in litigation via the media”.
