Post Idea #1: Pulse oximetry

Pulse Oximetry > Fact Sheets > Yale Medicine

Basically, pulse oximetry is a painless, noninvasive method of measuring the saturation of oxygen in a person’s blood.

“It’s important to remember that not all changes in pulse oximetry are related to COVID-19,” says Denyse Lutchmansingh, MD, a Yale Medicine pulmonologist.

Pulse oximetry offers many advantages over traditional methods of measuring blood oxygen levels.

At the same time, pulse oximetry is less precise than conventional methods, such as arterial blood gas testing.

Pulse oximeters have become so widespread that blood oxygen saturation is often referred to as the “Fifth vital sign,” a piece of data collected alongside four other measurements-temperature, blood pressure, pulse, and respiration rate-to gain insight into a person’s health status.

Outside of general practice, pulse oximetry is most frequently used to monitor patients with lung and heart disorders, who are at risk of low levels of blood oxygen.

Recent evidence suggests that pulse oximetry more frequently fails to detect hypoxemia-low blood oxygen levels-in Black patients as compared to white patients.

Pulse Oximetry: MedlinePlus Medical Test

Pulse oximetry is a test that uses a small, clip-like device called a pulse oximeter to measure oxygen levels in the blood.

Pulse oximetry is a painless and quick way to find out if your oxygen level is too low.

Other names: pulse ox, oxygen saturation monitor, finger pulse oximeter.

Pulse oximetry is used to check your blood oxygen level.

If you have a condition that affects lung function, your health care provider may recommend you use an at-home finger pulse oximeter or other oximeter to monitor your condition.

Pulse oximetry results may be 2 to 4 percent higher or lower than your actual blood oxygen level.

Your healthcare provider may have other reasons to advise pulse oximetry.

Ask your healthcare provider which risks apply most to you.

Your healthcare provider will explain the procedure to you.

Your healthcare provider may have other instructions for getting ready.

It depends on your condition and your healthcare provider’s methods.

You may go back to your normal diet and activities as instructed by your healthcare provider.

Your healthcare provider may give you other instructions after the procedure.

American Lung Association

If you have a symptom of shortness of breath or a known lung or heart condition, your doctor may recommend use of a pulse oximeter.

The pulse oximeter, or Pulse Ox, is an electronic device that measures the saturation of oxygen carried in your red blood cells.

Pulse oximeters can be attached to your fingers, forehead, nose, foot, ears or toes.

If you have poor circulation, dark skin pigmentation, thick skin, currently use tobacco, your skin temperature is cool, or you are wearing dark fingernail polish, long, artificial nails or if your fingers are not clean, the pulse oximeter may give inaccurate or inconsistent readings.

The pulse oximeter uses a cold light source that shines a light through the fingertip, making the tip appear to be red.

The pulse oximeter observes a rapid measurement of oxygen saturation level in your body without using needles or taking a blood sample.

Pulse Oximetry: Uses, Readings, And How It Works

Pulse oximetry is a noninvasive test that measures the oxygen saturation level of your blood.

These levels show how efficiently blood is carrying oxygen to the extremities furthest from your heart, including your arms and legs.

Medical professionals may use pulse oximeters to monitor the health of people with conditions that affect blood oxygen levels, especially while they’re in the hospital.

The pulse oximeter will be able to tell you your oxygen saturation levels along with your heart rate.

Pulse oximetry tests are an estimation of blood oxygen levels, but they’re typically precise.

If you’re evaluating how successful your oxygen supplementation therapy is, for example, a reading that’s still on the low side might indicate the need for more oxygen.

If you’re using pulse oximetry at home, they’ll let you know how often to take your readings and what to do if they go above or below certain levels.

Pulse Oximetry

Reflectance pulse oximetry is a less common alternative to transmissive pulse oximetry.

To ensure accuracy, the sensor should return a steady pulse and/or pulse waveform.

The accuracy of pulse oximetry deteriorates considerably for readings below 80%. Pulse oximetry also is not a complete measure of circulatory oxygen sufficiency.

Mobile app pulse oximeters use the flashlight and the camera of the phone, instead of infrared light used in conventional pulse oximeters.

The ratio of the AC component to the DC component, expressed as a percentage, is known as the perfusion index for a pulse, and typically has a range of 0.02% to 20%. An earlier measurement called the pulse oximetry plethysmographic only measures the “AC” component, and is derived manually from monitor pixels.

Nihon Kohden suspended the development of pulse oximetry and did not apply for a basic patent of pulse oximetry except in Japan.

Early studies of pulse oximetry performance during subject motion made clear the vulnerabilities of conventional pulse oximetry technologies to motion artifact.

Pulse Oximetry Test: Uses, Procedure, Risks, Results

Pulse oximetry, or pulse ox, is a quick, inexpensive, and needle-free test that measures the amount of oxygen in your blood.

Your doctor can use this test to find out if you need to breathe in extra oxygen through a tube or to be treated for a heart or lung problem.

Your doctor will use pulse oximetry whenever they think that your blood-oxygen levels could be too low.

Test oxygen levels when you use supplemental oxygen.

Or they’ll put a sticky disposable probe on your finger, nose, toe, or forehead. The pulse oximeter uses a special type of light to see how much oxygen is in the red blood cells traveling through the blood vessels under your skin.

In just a few seconds, the device will show your heart rate and oxygen saturation level – the percentage of your red blood cells carrying oxygen.

A blood oxygen level lower than 89% means you may not have enough oxygen in your blood to meet your body’s needs.

Post Idea #2: Facility management

What Is Facilities Management?

For people to do their best work and feel engaged in their environments, they need to be in buildings that are safe, welcoming, and efficient.

Facilities management has a hand in everything that surrounds the people in facilities and on the grounds.

Superior facilities management will contribute to your organization’s bottom line, impacting the short- and long-term value of property, buildings, and equipment.

What Is Facility Management

Facility managers can have many different titles and arrive in their profession through a variety of career paths.

They’re responsible for making sure systems of the built environment, or facility, work harmoniously.

They are important because they make sure the places in which people work, play, learn and live are safe, comfortable, productive and sustainable.

FMs contribute to the organization’s bottom line through their responsibility for maintaining what are often an organization’s largest and most valuable assets, such as property, buildings, equipment and other environments that house personnel, productivity, inventory and other elements of operation.

Supporting productivity of facilities and personnel.

Promoting sustainable tactics for long-term cost management.

Reducing or overcoming effects of natural disasters.

A Complete Guide To Facilities Management

Your facilities management team is responsible for the overall well-being and functioning of the entire facility.

Another popular way to look at facility management roles is to split them into two groups: Hard Facilities Management and Soft Facilities Management.

To successfully schedule, track, and manage all maintenance activities and work orders, facility management teams will often seek the help of computerized maintenance management software or Computer-aided facilities management software.

Space planning: Space planning and management is an important part of facilities management.

Your facilities management team should include people with different competencies.

The International Facility Management Association offers training programs that are widely recognized by employers across the United States that have helped facilities managers get raises, promotions, and move their career forward.

Facility management for the modern world is now responsible for our spaces, physical and cyber security, well-being, resource consumption, and risk management.

The key is to define the facility as a physical place where business activities are done, and to make facility management plans in accordance with the needs and demands of those business activities.

THE EVOLVING CHARACTER OF FACILITY MANAGEMENT. Facility management has traditionally been associated with janitorial services, mailrooms, and security.

Writing in IIE Solutions, Steven M. Price summarized the facility manager’s situation thusly: “Facilities professionals are being asked to contain costs while achieving maximum beneficial use-that is, to achieve more with less.” In addition, philosophical changes such as increased reliance on teamwork, cross-functional teams, and telecommuting have created new spacing and infrastructure demands.

Finally, the responsibilities of facility managers have continued to broaden into all areas of facility upkeep, including insuring that the business adheres to regulatory requirements in such areas as handicapped access, hazardous material handling and disposal, and other “Safe workplace” issues.

FACILITY MANAGEMENT IN THE FUTURE. Analysts have suggested that evolving business realities in the realms of process improvement, cost containment, speed-to-market accelerations, quality control, and workplace arrangements and concepts will all have a big impact on future notions of facility management.

CONTRACT FACILITY MANAGEMENT. Increasing numbers of large businesses are choosing to outsource their facility management tasks to specialized facility management companies that operate the complex for the owner on a contract basis.

As Raymond O’Brien commented in Managing Office Technology, “Both the in-house facility management department and outsourced services must recognize that the facility management business is changing. While, traditionally, interior planning has been driven by preconceived notions of what is appropriate, business today increasingly is not being conducted in a traditional manner or in traditional locations’¦. Changing roles, combined with changing technology, drives the environment of the future.”

The 4 Main And Important Functions Of Facilities Management

SpaceIQ. The broad scope of facilities management makes it a hard position to define.

Where a Sales Manager is directly responsible for managing the performance of salespeople, the functions of facilities management go far beyond “Managing facilities.” As a result, it’s often difficult for companies to maximize the advantages of a good facility manager.

What is the importance of facilities management? To truly understand what a facility manager does, what they’re responsible for, and what effect they have on a company, it’s best to break down their scope of work.

What are the functions of facilities management without a process to govern them? Establishing processes brings order to the workplace.

As the name implies, facility management is largely rooted in facilities upkeep and improvement of the physical building.

More important than ever is the need for facilities managers to understand and use technology.

It’s up to facility managers to understand and leverage this function for optimal ROI. Putting it all together for facilities management.

Top Facility Management Service Companies

As the healthcare facilities are at more risk of disease contamination, the facility managers need to ensure the utmost safety of the premise.

From AI to IoT sensors, every latest innovation is being integrated into traditional facility management endeavors to increase the overall quality of patient experience and safety.

Data from IoT devices and facility management software helps facilities managers understand more about how their workplace functions and what employees need to do their best work.

Another key trend is the growing momentum of integrated facilities management.

As workplaces become more complex, integrated facilities management is more important than ever.

At this juncture, many cutting-edge facility management solutions and service providers are entering the domain with advanced and integrated offerings.

To help the healthcare sector strengthen its operational capabilities and simultaneously enable growth in the industry, Healthcare Tech Outlook has compiled a list of the top facility management solution and services providing companies.

Blood Sugar Levels, Chart & Ranges

Blood sugar levels, also known as blood glucose level, is the level of sugar/glucose present in the blood.

The more food you consume with high sugar levels over a period of time, will typically increase your blood sugar level.

The concentration of glucose present in the blood will determine your blood sugar level.

Due to this, insulin levels drop and blood sugar levels spike.

If you have a normal blood sugar level and lack carbohydrates, your blood sugar will naturally drop as most sugar/glucose comes from the consumption of carbohydrates.

Lack of sugar will lead to lack of energy and is damaging for the body and blood sugar.

Blood sugar testing requires the use of a blood sugar meter.

Blood Sugar Levels & Ranges Chart

What are “Normal” ranges for nondiabetics are not the same for diabetics; it is generally accepted that target blood sugar measurements for people with diabetes will be slightly higher than those without diabetes.

If a person’s diabetes is not well controlled, the person may have much higher glucose ranges or hypoglycemia (for example, 200 -400 mg/d; however some people with diabetes have blood sugar levels that are much higher.

High blood sugar or hyperglycemia is an abnormally high blood sugar level in the blood.

The normal ranges for blood sugar levels in adults who do not have diabetes before eating or fasting the range begins at 72-99mg/dL while fasting ranges for those being treated for type 1 or type 2 diabetes range from 80 -130 mg/dL. According to the American Diabetes Association normal blood sugar levels before and after eating should be 80-130 mg/dL before eating a meal, and less than 180 mg/dL about 1-2 hours after eating a meal.

High blood sugar ranges for people who don’t have diabetes begins at 140 mg/dL or greater while for those being treated for diabetes, the high range begins at 180 mg/dL , called hypoglycemia.

Although high blood sugar levels commonly produce symptoms of excessive urination, excessive thirst and hunger, and weight loss, over time these high blood sugar levels can cause lower extremity paresthesias and/or loss of feeling, blurry vision and a tendency to be at higher risk for infections and many other medical problems including kidney and eye damage, heart attack, and stroke.

Yes, low blood sugar symptoms can cause problems such as hunger, nervousness, perspiration, dizziness and even confusion; if untreated, low blood sugar may result in unconsciousness, seizures, coma, or death.

14 Easy Ways To Lower Blood Sugar Levels Naturally

Your body usually manages your blood sugar levels by producing insulin, a hormone that allows your cells to use the circulating sugar in your blood.

Blood sugar management is especially important for people with diabetes, as chronically high blood sugar levels can lead to limb and life threatening complications.

Here are 14 easy and evidence-backed ways to naturally lower your blood sugar levels.

Many studies also show that eating a low carb diet helps reduce blood sugar levels and prevent blood sugar spikes.

A high fiber diet can improve your body’s ability to regulate blood sugar and minimize blood sugar lows.

These seeds may support blood sugar management due to their high fiber content, which delays stomach emptying and subsequently prevents your blood sugar levels from spiking.

There are multiple ways to naturally manage your blood sugar levels.

Monitoring Your Blood Sugar

Regular blood sugar monitoring is the most important thing you can do to manage type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Your doctor will tell you when and how often to check your blood sugar levels.

Most blood sugar meters allow you to save your results and you can use an app on your cell phone to track your levels.

Do not share blood sugar monitoring equipment, such as lancets, with anyone, even other family members.

Work with your doctor to identify your personal blood sugar goals based on your age, health, diabetes treatment, and whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes.

Your range may be different if you have other health conditions or if your blood sugar is often low or high.

A1C results tell you your average blood sugar level over 3 months.

Blood Glucose Monitoring

Blood glucose monitoring observes for patterns in the fluctuation of blood glucose levels that occur in response to diet, exercise, medications, and or pathological processes associated with blood glucose fluctuations such as diabetes.

Blood glucose level or blood sugar level monitoring undertaken in the home/community are often referred to as capillary blood glucose tests, while blood glucose tests carried out at clinical facilities may include CBG, and venous blood tests.

Advantages: Accurate measurement of blood glucose is superior to the capillary blood glucose test.

Disadvantages: Glucose is first seen in blood before it is seen in the interstitial fluid, which the CGM measures hence may not always be a reliable indicator in rapidly changing blood glucose levels.

Blood glucose is measured in mmol/L or mg/dL. Normal range: 4 to 6 mmol or about 72 to 108 mg/dL. Lab-based Blood Glucose Testing.

Oral glucose tolerance test: Glucose tolerance range at two hours post 75-gram oral glucose ingestion: ≥11.1 mmol, or ≥200 mg/dL. Random venous blood glucose of at or above 11.1mmol/L, or fasting blood glucose at or above 7 mmol/L on two or more separate occasions indicates the client is likely to have diabetes.

Emergent treatment to restore normal blood glucose levels is imperative as certain organs do not store glucose and need a constant supply of blood glucose to sustain life.

Blood Glucose Monitoring Devices

What type of test is this? This is a quantitative test, which means that you will find out the amount of glucose present in your blood sample.

How often should you test your glucose? Follow your doctor’s recommendations about how often you test your glucose.

How do you take this test? Before you test your blood glucose, you must read and understand the instructions for your meter.

To test a liquid control solution, you test a drop of these solutions just like you test a drop of your blood.

Compare your meter with a blood glucose test performed in a laboratory.

Can you test blood glucose from sites other than your fingers? Some meters allow you to test blood from sites other than the fingertip.

Alternative site testing should not be performed at times when your blood glucose may be changing rapidly, as these alternative sampling sites may provide inaccurate results at those times.

Continuous Glucose Monitoring

Continuous glucose monitoring automatically tracks blood glucose levels, also called blood sugar, throughout the day and night.

The sensor measures your interstitial glucose level, which is the glucose found in the fluid between the cells.

Special Features of a CGM. CGMs are always on and recording glucose levels-whether you’re showering, working, exercising, or sleeping.

What are the benefits of a CGM? Compared with a standard blood glucose meter, using a CGM system can help you.

A graphic on the CGM screen shows whether your glucose is rising or dropping-and how quickly-so you can choose the best way to reach your target glucose level.

You still need a finger-stick glucose test twice a day to check the accuracy of your CGM against a standard blood glucose meter.

The hybrid closed-loop system may free you from some of the daily tasks needed to keep your blood glucose stable-or help you sleep through the night without the need to wake and test your glucose or take medicine.

Blood Glucose Monitoring: How It Works

People use portable blood glucose meters, called glucometers, to check their blood sugar levels.

By checking your blood glucose levels routinely, you’ll also know when your blood sugar is too high or too low, both of which can cause symptoms and serious health problems.

Risks from the blood glucose test are minimal and much lower than the risks of not monitoring your blood sugar levels.

Your monitor will analyze the blood and give you the blood glucose reading on its digital display usually within a minute.

If you have type 1 diabetes, you may need to test your blood glucose four or more times per day.

If you have type 2 diabetes, your doctor will let you know when and how often to test your blood glucose.

Regular blood glucose monitoring is an essential tool to help you take control of your diabetes.

Patients using CGM are therefore advised to consider both the absolute value of the blood glucose level given by the system as well as any trend in the blood glucose levels.

A patient using CGM with a blood glucose of 100 mg/dl on their CGM system might take no action if their blood glucose has been consistent for several readings, while a patient with the same blood glucose level but whose blood glucose has been dropping steeply in a short period of time might be advised to perform a fingerstick test to check for hypoglycemia.

Some new technologies to monitor blood glucose levels will not require access to blood to read the glucose level.

Most of the non-invasive methods under development are continuous glucose monitoring methods and offer the advantage of providing additional information to the subject between the conventional finger stick, blood glucose measurements, and overtime periods were no finger stick measurements are available.

Propylene Oxide

Industrial production of propylene oxide starts from propylene.

The other general route to propylene oxide involves oxidation of propylene with an organic peroxide.

Grignard reagents add to propylene oxide to give secondary alcohols.

About 20% of propylene oxide is hydrolyzed into propylene glycol, via a process which is accelerated by acid or base catalysis.

Propylene oxide is commonly used in the preparation of biological samples for electron microscopy, to remove residual ethanol previously used for dehydration.

In a typical procedure, the sample is first immersed in a mixture of equal volumes of ethanol and propylene oxide for 5 minutes, and then four times in pure oxide, 10 minutes each.

Propylene oxide is sometimes used in thermobaric munitions as the fuel in fuel-air explosives.

Propylene oxide 75-56-9 Hazard Summary Propylene oxide is used in the production of polyethers and propylene glycol.

Uses The major use of propylene oxide is in the production of polyethers and propylene glycol.

Assessing Personal Exposure No information was located regarding the measurement of personal exposure to propylene oxide.

Health Hazard Information Acute Effects: Acute Effects: Acute exposure of humans and animals to propylene oxide has caused eye and respiratory tract irritation.

Tests involving acute exposure of rats, mice, guinea pigs, and rabbits have demonstrated propylene oxide to have moderate acute toxicity from inhalation, high acute toxicity from dermal exposure, and moderate to high acute toxicity from ingestion.

A study with rats and rabbits exposed to propylene oxide by inhalation prior to and during gestation concluded that propylene oxide was harmful to the developing fetus but did not cause birth defects.

Propylene oxide has been observed to cause tumors at or near the site of administration in rodents, causing forestomach tumors following exposure via gavage and nasal tumors after inhalation exposure.

PROPYLENE OXIDE

An explosion occurred when propylene oxide was added to an epoxy resin.

Signs and Symptoms of Acute Propylene Oxide Exposure: Propylene oxide may irritate or burn the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract.

Emergency Life-Support Procedures: Acute exposure to propylene oxide may require decontamination and life support for the victims.

Emergency personnel should avoid self-exposure to propylene oxide.

ScienceDirect Topics

The present work intends to study the role of precipitant, catalyst washing, calcinations and pretreatment in different gas streams, during the preparation of Au catalysts by DP method, onto mesoporous titanosilicates of different porosities and pore structures and its effect on the propylene epoxidation activity and selectivity in order to fine tune the synthesis of gold-titanosilicate catalysts for propylene epoxidation reaction.

For the addition reaction of CO2 to PO, the following elementary reaction steps can be proposed according to the similar mechanism proposed in the synthesis of 5-membered cyclic carbonates with quaternary salt catalysts.

Since the CO2 addition reaction was carried out at constant pressure, the absorption rate of CO2 into the ionic liquid can be assumed much faster than that of CO2 addition reaction with PO. Therefore, the concentration of dissolved CO2 in an ionic liquid can be assumed constant.

More detailed studies on the mechanism of the reaction is necessary to better understand the role of ionic liquids in this reaction.

The higher limits on the pressure and reaction rate are dictated by the pressure suitability of the reactor system and the feasible heat removal rate.

32 The experimental PPO MWs were close to theoretical values and the MWDs were narrow suggesting a controlled PO polymerization without any significant contribution of the monomer chain-transfer reaction.

These results are consistent with the strong activation of the polymerization by R3Al present in excess with respect to i-PrONa and with a reaction mechanism in which the monomer is activated by an electrophilic aluminum compound prior to its insertion into the sodium poly triisobutylaluminate growing chain end.

Propylene Oxide

Shell chemicals companies are leading players in propylene oxide and its principal derivatives – polyether polyols and propylene glycols.

Foams in furniture and car seats, artificial sports tracks, building insulation, waterproof clothing and aircraft de-icers are just some of the many ultimate applications of propylene oxide.

Expansion of polyols plant at Pernis, The Netherlands 2009 Shell Chemicals celebrates 50 years of polyols 2011 Modifications at Pernis increases capacity of CASE polyols.

The second largest use of propylene oxide is the production of propylene glycol and lesser amounts of coproduced dipropylene glycol and higher propylene glycols.

Propylene oxide is also used to manufacture functional fluids by reaction of propylene oxide or mixtures of propylene oxide and ethylene oxide with glycols, glycerine, alcohols and phenols.

Fire Safety 5.1  Fire and Explosion Hazard 5.2  Fire Prevention Propylene oxide is an extremely flammable liquid and vapor that is classified by the following organizations: Propylene oxide, when ignited, burns rapidly with high heat.

The foam manufacturer should be contacted to verify their foams’ effectiveness in suppressing propylene oxide vapors and extinguishing fires involving propylene oxide.

In confined spaces, such as sumps or sewers, a dilution greater than 150 to 1, or less than 0.75% propylene oxide, maybe necessary to prevent PO vapor concentrations above 20% LEL. Portable fire extinguishers should be placed in the vicinity where propylene oxide is handled or stored and in areas where the potential for spills or leaks exists.

Any accidental discharge of propylene oxide or waste containing propylene oxide into the municipal sewer system should be reported immediately to local authorities.

Propylene oxide tanks should be designed and constructed at twice the absolute vapor pressure of propylene oxide at the planned operating temperature.

Boston Scientific Touts Early Results Of Real-World Watchman FLX Study

On Monday from a real-world analysis following 16,000 patients who were implanted with its Watchman FLX device.

Boston Scientific’s Watchman FLX, the newest version of its left atrial appendage closure device, received FDA approval.

Boston Scientific’s SURPASS study will run for two years before it releases final results, evaluating the Watchman FLX device’s effectiveness in reducing the risk of ischemic stroke and systemic embolism.

Based on early results shared on Monday, the rate of adverse events 45 days after implantation was similar to a pivotal study of the device, as well as the percentage of patients with no leak.

While Boston Scientific’s Watchman device currently has leading market share in the U.S., in Europe, Abbott’s Amulet device makes up about half of the market, after receiving a CE mark in 2013.

While analysts have postulated how much market share Abbott could take in the U.S., sales of Boston Scientific’s Watchman device haven’t taken a hit so far.

In Abbott’s most recent earnings call, CEO Robert Ford said its Amulet device had been used in about 500 procedures last year, giving it about 10% market share in the U.S. However, Boston Scientific CEO Mike Mahoney contended that position was overstated.

Post Idea #16: Artificial cardiac pacemaker

Related Articles – Summarized

Artificial Cardiac Pacemaker

The primary purpose of a pacemaker is to maintain an adequate heart rate, either because the heart’s natural pacemaker is not fast enough, or because there is a block in the heart’s electrical conduction system.

A specific type of pacemaker called a defibrillator combines pacemaker and defibrillator functions in a single implantable device, which should be called a defibrillator, for clarity.

The pacemaker generator is a hermetically sealed device containing a power source, usually a lithium battery, a sensing amplifier which processes the electrical manifestation of naturally occurring heart beats as sensed by the heart electrodes, the computer logic for the pacemaker and the output circuitry which delivers the pacing impulse to the electrodes.

A major step forward in pacemaker function has been to attempt to mimic nature by utilizing various inputs to produce a rate-responsive pacemaker using parameters such as the QT interval, pO2 – pCO2 in the arterial-venous system, physical activity as determined by an accelerometer, body temperature, ATP levels, adrenaline, etc.

The use of MRI may be ruled out by the patient having a pacemaker manufactured before MRI conditional devices became common, or by the patient having old pacing wires abandoned inside the heart, no longer connected to their pacemaker.

The first clinical implantation into a human of a fully implantable pacemaker was in 1958 at the Karolinska Institute in Solna, Sweden, using a pacemaker designed by inventor Rune Elmqvist and surgeon Åke Senning, connected to electrodes attached to the myocardium of the heart by thoracotomy.

On July 9, 1974, Manuel A. Villafaña and Anthony Adducci founders of Cardiac Pacemakers, Inc. in St. Paul, Minnesota, manufactured the world’s first pacemaker with a lithium anode and a lithium-iodide electrolyte solid-state battery.

American Heart Association

A small battery-operated device that helps the heart beat in a regular rhythm.

The generator is connected to your heart through tiny wires that are implanted at the same time.

The impulses flow through these leads to your heart and are timed to flow at regular intervals just as impulses from your heart’s natural pacemaker would.

A chamber of the heart contracts when an electrical impulse or signal moves across it.

The pacemaker’s pulse generator sends electrical impulses to the heart to help it pump properly.

An electrode is placed next to the heart wall and small electrical charges travel through the wire to the heart.

Written by American Heart Association editorial staff and reviewed by science and medicine advisers.

Artificial Cardiac Pacemakers

Artificial pacemakers are electronic devices used primarily to control cardiac rate in patients in whom the intrinsic heart rate is inadequate for a normal life style.

These devices automatically and rhythmically provide electrical impulses to stimulate the heart.

Electrical stimulation of various organs of the human body was already in practice more than two centuries ago.

These applications were in experimental stages until recently when electrical stimulation of the heart has emerged as a new therapy.

In view of the astonishing progress made in the field of pacemaker technology and the current indications for the specific types of pacing systems, it behooves physicians caring for patients with heart disease to become familiar with the use of cardiac pacemakers and the not infrequent problems associated with their use.

The primary purpose of this review is to present fundamental knowledge in the electrical stimulation of the heart and the various pacing systems available.

Pacemaker, Artificial* / statistics & numerical data.

Artificial Pacemaker For The Heart – All About Cardiovascular System And Disorders

The basic electronic pacemaker consists of an electronic circuitry to generate the pulses, a battery with long storage life of the order of several years and a set of leads to convey the pulses to the heart.

Programmer can interrogate the pacemaker to retrieve important information regarding pacemaker function and malfunction.

Latest programmers can sent the data to a server over the internet making it feasible for the specialised physician to evaluate complex pacemaker function sitting in another country or continent! The pacemaker lead is a passive component which transmits the pulses to the heart and receives the heart’s electrical signals for the pacemaker to analyse.

There are pacemakers available which can pace one, two or three chambers of the heart – they are known as single chamber, dual chamber and biventricular pacemakers respectively.

The biventricular pacemakers are mainly used for synchronizing the contraction of the two ventricles in patients with heart failure.

In the pacemaker clinic the programmer head is kept over the device implanted under the skin and interrogated using radiofrequency signals.

The lead is connected to the socket on the pacemaker and screwed tightly.

Artificial Heart Pacemaker

Permanent pacemaker implantation is indicated for congenital third-degree AV block in the infant with a ventricular rate less than 55 bpm or with congenital heart disease and a ventricular rate less than 70 bpm.

The pulse generator consists of several components: a power source, which in permanent pacemakers is a sealed battery, most commonly lithium iodide; voltage multipliers that increase the available stimulation amplitude; amplifier circuits that increase the amplitude of sensed cardiac signals; microelectronic circuits that regulate timing of the device and control the action of the pacemaker; a radiofrequency receiver to receive programming information; and a transmitter to provide information from the pacemaker.

In dual chamber pacemakers, pacemaker related tachycardia may still occur, either as reentrant tachycardia with the atrioventricular node as the retrograde limb and the pacemaker as the anterograde limb, or in older devices, from tracking of supraventricular fibrillation.

Dual-chamber pacing can be beneficial in some of these patients with marked PR prolongation and symptoms similar to those of pacemaker syndrome, as well as in patients with LV dysfunction and heart failure symptoms in whom a shorter AV interval is expected to lead to hemodynamic improvement, presumably by improving ventricular filling and reducing diastolic mitral regurgitation.

Management of Permanent PacemakersIn patients with permanent pacemakers undergoing cardiac surgery, it is usual to reprogram the pacemaker into demand mode at a low rate prior to returning to the ICU. Postoperative cardiac pacing is then managed in the usual fashion with temporary epicardial pacing.

Care must be taken to avoid pacemaker “Cross-talk,” in which the output of one pacemaker is sensed by the other as native atrial or ventricular activity, even though the first pacemaker may not be capturing the atria or ventricle.

Pacemakers and DefibrillatorsImplantation of a permanent pacemaker requires specific levels of evidence and indications based on American College of Cardiology-American Heart Association.

Mayo Clinic

Your doctor may recommend a temporary pacemaker when you have a slow heartbeat after a heart attack, surgery or medication overdose but your heartbeat is otherwise expected to recover.

A pacemaker may be implanted permanently to correct a chronic slow or irregular heartbeat or to help treat heart failure.

If your heartbeat is too slow, the pacemaker sends electrical signals to your heart to correct the beat.

The doctor inserts a flexible sheath in a vein in the groin and then guides the single component pacemaker through the catheter to the proper position in the heart.

Your pacemaker sends information to your doctor, including your heart rate and rhythm, how your pacemaker is working, and how much battery life is left.

The procedure to change your pacemaker’s battery is often quicker and requires less recovery time than the procedure to implant your pacemaker.

If you have a pacemaker and become terminally ill with a condition unrelated to your heart, such as cancer, it’s possible that your pacemaker could prolong your life.

Pacemaker: Types, Procedure, Precautions, And More

Some people need a special type of pacemaker called a biventricular pacemaker, or bivent.

You may need a temporary pacemaker after a heart attack or heart surgery.

Most risks associated with a pacemaker are a result of the implantation procedure.

Pacemaker syndrome, which is when a pacemaker only stimulates one ventricle, leading to fatigue, shortness of breath, low blood pressure, and pacemaker-related cardiomyopathy.

Placing a biventricular pacemaker, which has three leads, will often take longer than placing a single-lead pacemaker.

You should continue to avoid any rigorous exercise or heavy lifting for about 4 to 6 weeks, especially lifting the arm on the side of the pacemaker overhead. Since the electrical signals that a pacemaker sends are very small, it’s unlikely that you’ll feel them.

Modern pacemakers aren’t as sensitive to electrical devices as the old ones, but certain devices could cause interference with your pacemaker.

Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators

An ICD continuously monitors the heartbeat and delivers electric shocks, when needed, to restore a regular heart rhythm.

You might need an ICD if you have a dangerously fast heartbeat that keeps your heart from supplying enough blood to the rest of your body or if you are at high risk of such a heart rhythm problem, usually because of a weak heart muscle.

An ICD differs from a pacemaker – an implantable device that can prevent dangerously slow heartbeats.

Your health care provider may recommend an ICD if you’ve had signs or symptoms of a certain type of irregular heart rhythm called sustained ventricular tachycardia, including fainting.

Testing the ICD might require speeding up the heart and then shocking it back into a regular rhythm.

Although the electrical shocks can be unsettling, they’re a sign that the ICD is effectively treating a heart rhythm problem and protecting against sudden death.

If you have an ICD and become terminally ill, your ICD will still deliver shocks if it isn’t deactivated.

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator

View an animation of an ICD. What is an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator?

An ICD is a battery-powered device placed under the skin that keeps track of your heart rate.

Because many people do not understand their underlying condition – such as heart failure or genetic predisposition for risk of sudden cardiac arrest – and because ICDs are used primarily to prevent sudden cardiac death, they in turn may not understand the benefits versus the limitations of having an ICD implanted.

If your ICD has a pacemaker feature when your heartbeat is too slow, it works as a pacemaker and sends tiny electric signals to your heart.

The following devices can disrupt the ICD’s signaling and prevent it from working properly, sometimes without your knowledge.

The longer you are exposed to the potentially interruptive device and the closer it is in proximity to your ICD, the more likely it will affect your ICD’s performance.

Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator: MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia

Your heart may need pacing if it is beating too slowly or too fast, or if you have had a shock from the ICD.There is a special kind of ICD called a subcutaneous ICD. This device has a lead that is placed in the tissue to the left of the breastbone rather than in the heart.

The surgeon will place the electrode into a vein, then into your heart.

An ICD is placed in people who are at high risk of sudden cardiac death from an abnormal heart rhythm that is life threatening.

You have had episodes of one of these abnormal heart rhythms.

An ICD sometimes delivers shocks to your heart when you DO NOT need them.

The SCD-HeFT trial showed a significant all-cause mortality benefit for patients with ICD. Congestive heart failure patients that were implanted with an ICD had an all-cause death risk 23% lower than placebo and an absolute decrease in mortality of 7.2 percentage points after five years in the overall population.

1 Reporting in 1999, the Antiarrhythmics Versus Implantable Defibrillators trial consisted of 1,016 patients, and deaths in those treated with AAD were more frequent compared with deaths in the ICD groups.

Initially ICDs were implanted via thoracotomy with defibrillator patches applied to the epicardium or pericardium.

Almost all forms of physical activities can be performed by patients with an ICD. All forms of sports that do not pose a risk of damaging the ICD or because of the underlying cardiomyopathy can be undertaken by the patient.

Doing so may damage the ICD or the leads going from the ICD generator to the patient’s heart.

Equipment using large magnets or generating magnetic fields, or any similar environment, must be avoided by patients with an ICD. As with other metallic objects, an ICD is normally a contraindication to the use of magnetic resonance imaging.

Implantable cardioverter defibrillators have demonstrated clear life-saving benefits, while concerns about patient acceptance and psychological adjustment to the ICD have been the focus of much research.

Post Idea #18: X-ray tube

X-Ray Tube

An X-ray tube is a vacuum tube that converts electrical input power into X-rays.

As with any vacuum tube, there is a cathode, which emits electrons into the vacuum and an anode to collect the electrons, thus establishing a flow of electrical current, known as the beam, through the tube.

At this point, the tube assembly is removed from the X-ray system, and replaced with a new tube assembly.

The old tube assembly is shipped to a company that reloads it with a new X-ray tube.

A small tube attached to the side of the main tube contained a mica sleeve or chemical that released a small amount of gas when heated, restoring the correct pressure.

In the case with a 10 μm electron-beam focus a metal-jet-anode microfocus X-ray source may operate at 30-60 W. The major benefit of the increased power density level for the metal-jet X-ray tube is the possibility to operate with a smaller focal spot, say 5 μm, to increase image resolution and at the same time acquire the image faster, since the power is higher than for solid-anode tubes with 10 μm focal spots.

Historically, concern has focused less on the cathode ray tube, since its thick glass envelope is impregnated with several pounds of lead for shielding, than on high voltage rectifier and voltage regulator tubes inside earlier TVs. In the late 1960s it was found that a failure in the HV supply circuit of some General Electric TVs could leave excessive voltages on the regulator tube, causing it to emit X-rays.

Radiology Reference Article

An x-ray tube functions as a specific energy converter, receiving electrical energy and converting it into two other forms of energy: x-radiation and heat.

The envelope is most often made from glass, although some tubes contain envelopes formed from ceramic or even metal.

For some demanding application, such as dual energy CT, rotating envelope tubes are used.

Unlike conventional x-ray tubes, in rotating envelope tubes, not only the anode, but the entire vacuum tube rotates the anode is in direct contact with the liquid coolant, resulting in improved heat conduction and increased performance 4.

Wilhelm Roentgen discovered x-rays using a Crookes tube in 1895.

Until the invention of the Coolidge tube in 1913, all x-ray tubes were based on the Crookes or cold cathode gas tube technology.

From the late 1910s onwards there was a rapid replacement of gas tubes by the far more effective Coolidge tubes.

If the electrons were premitted to spread out, then the x-ray production process would become very inefficient.

8 The 2nd major part of the x-ray tube is the Anode.

9 This diagram demonstrates the relative position of the anode and cathode and the resulting emission of x-rays.

In most x-ray tubes, the revolutions per minute is usually at 3,200 for standard technique settings, however if the technologist selects exposure factors that are considerably larger and therefore very hot, then the rotor can rotate at a much greater speed exceeding 5,000 rpm.

11 As we discussed in the initial slides where we spoke of how x-rays are produced, it is important to note that the metal used for producing x-rays must not only have good thermal qualities, it must also be able to produce x-rays easily.

While the projectile electrons do not “Bounce” away from the target, the angle at which it is positioned allows more x-rays to be directed toward the image receptor or film.

The oil helps insulate electrically for safety and one additional thing it does is if you notice where the primary beam exits the housing, the x-rays must pass through a small thinkness of oil before they emerge from the tube and this contributes to minimal filtration or absorption of the x-ray beam when you make an exposure.

The X-Ray Tube

HousingThe general construction of the tube head assembly is discussed first.

Recall that the x-ray tube is situated in a protective housing that provides solid, stable mechanical support.

This housing is a lead-lined metal structure that also serves as an electrical insulator and thermal cushion for the tube itself.

The design of the housing incorporates an oil bath and cooling fans to help dissipate heat away from the tube, protecting it from thermal damage.

The tube is immersed in the oil bath, which draws heat away from the tube.

Two large electrical cables enter the housing and are securely attached to the x-ray tube through special high-voltage receptacles.

Two notes of caution about the housing are necessary: First, with extended “On” times, the housing can become rather hot.

Shoe Polish

In the late 18th and early 19th century many forms of shoe polish became available, yet were rarely referred to as shoe polish or boot polish.

The practice of shining people’s shoes gradually caught on and soon many shoeshine boys in city streets were offering shoe shines using a basic form of shoe polish along with a polishing cloth.

This increase in leather shoe production continued well into the 20th century and led to a surge in the number of retail shoe stores in the industrialized world, and subsequently a call for shoe polish by footwear consumers.

American war correspondent Walter Graeber wrote for TIME magazine from the Tobruk trenches in 1942 that “Old tins of British-made Kiwi polish lay side by side with empty bottles of Chianti.” A story indicative of the rise in global significance of shoe polish is told by Jean Williams, a New Zealander who lived in Japan during the Allied occupation straight after World War II. American soldiers were then finding the dullness of their boots and shoes to be a handicap when trying to win the affections of Japanese women.

While Kiwi shoe polish was what business historian Alfred D. Chandler, Jr. would call a “First mover”, Kiwi did not open a manufacturing plant in the US until after World War II. Prior to this, Cavalier Shoe Polish, founded by James Lobell, had operated in the US since 1913.

There are two chief areas of shoe polish sales: to the general public, and to specialists and trade, such as shoe repairers, and cobblers.

Shoe polish is applied to the shoe using a rag, cloth, brush, or with bare fingers.

Article About Manufacturing By The Free Dictionary

The development of manufacture production involved three forms of manufacture: scattered, mixed, and centralized.

The classical form of the development of manufacture occurred in England, where all three forms became widespread, above all in the textile industry and the production of paper and glass; manufacture was most prominent in metalworking and shipbuilding.

In France scattered manufacture arose in the 16th and 17th centuries on the base of the rural cloth and tanning industries; centralized manufacture emerged in book printing and metalworking, in which the production of luxury items was prominent.

The existence of a multitude of small and very small industrial enterprises was characteristic of the manufacture period; work at home remained the unfailing companion of manufacture.

Marx wrote: “At a given stage in its development the narrow technical basis on which manufacture rested came into conflict with requirements of production that were created by manufacture itself”.

The number of enterprises under the jurisdiction of the Manufacturing Collegium, and later under the Department of Manufacturing, increased.

By 1860, nonserf workers in factories of the manufacturing industry made up about 80 percent of the total number of workers.

Manufacturing Definition

The term manufacturing refers to the processing of raw materials or parts into finished goods through the use of tools, human labor, machinery, and chemical processing.

Efficient manufacturing techniques enable manufacturers to take advantage of economies of scale, producing more units at a lower cost.

Manufacturing value added is an indicator that compares an economy’s manufacturing output to its overall size.

Lean manufacturing is a form production that can be used by manufacturers that want to reduce production system time in order to increase their efficiency.

Manufacturing overhead is the total indirect cost associated with manufacturing.

Contract manufacturing occurs when one company hires another firm, usually a third party, to execute certain portions of their manufacturing process.

What Is Manufacturing?

Manufacturing could take place on a less organised scale, often in rural areas, where craftspeople would supplement agricultural subsistence through home-based manufacturing.

Rather than a single artisan producing an entire product as had occurred for centuries in the past, manufacturing was broken down into separate parts to create the basis for modern manufacture as we know it today.

At it’s core, manufacturing is a simple process; the raw materials or component parts are bought and then turned into a finished product.

Quality control is also an important aspect of any manufacturing process in order to protect the image of your brand and products.

Construction, while seemingly a manufacturing process, is actually its own category and not considered a facet of manufacturing either.

As robots become more sophisticated many manufacturing processes are being automated while big data allows manufacturers to analyse and target customer needs to guide product development.

The figures for manufacturing employment, inventories and orders are examined by manufacturing institutes, such as The Institute for Supply Management, whose reports inform financial analysts and researchers.

Resource Management Definition

Resource management is the process by which businesses manage their various resources effectively.

Managing resources involves schedules and budgets for people, projects, equipment, and supplies.

When used in reference to project management, resource management often applies to resource leveling and smoothing.

Resource leveling is designed to avoid shortages or excess inventory by keeping the stock of resources at a level that avoids both problems.

With leveling, the start and finish dates are adjusted so that they mesh with resource availability.

Resource smoothing is a scheduling technique that attempts to meet a specified deadline while avoiding peaks and valleys on the resources.

At its simplest level for small businesses, resource management is about making sure that a company is using its talents and materials wisely and effectively.

What Is Resource Management And Why Is It Important?

Resource management ensures resource managers have on-demand, real-time visibility into people and other resources so they can have greater control over delivery.

Organizations use the following resource management techniques to maximize resource efficiency, often relying on software to provide transparency to help leaders make smarter resource decisions.

Resource utilization is a resource management technique that enables you to gain visibility into the capacity of your team over a period of time and identify whether resources are being over or underutilized.

As important as resource management is to ensure current projects run smoothly with the appropriate resources, the real benefit comes with being able to plan ahead to keep resources balanced across current and future projects.

Determining your resource requirements, including people / skills and budget, is the first stage of resource management.

To address these resource management challenges, the company created a department to concentrate solely on product ideation and development and deployed a project portfolio management solution to manage data, process, and resources.

Resource management enabled the company to improve the prioritization of work and resources with a six- to 12-month view of resource planning activities.

With enterprise-wide visibility, resource managers can utilize cost-effective global resources from low-cost locations.

The resource management process brings transparency in communication and hence facilitates to effectively share highly skilled resources in a matrix organization.

Resource scheduling involves identifying and allocating resources for a specific period to different project tasks.

Resource forecasting helps managers predict resource utilization levels in advance and foresee the resources likely to end up on the bench.

Resource managers are accountable for fulfilling resource requests from project managers by assigning the job to the right resource.

Otherwise, poor resource management will have an adverse effect on the entire resource pool and the firm’s reputation.

Inefficient resource management practices lead to poor resource allocation, which causes teams to put in longer hours for meeting project goals.

Electric Guitar

An electric guitar is a guitar that requires external amplification in order to be heard at typical performance volumes, unlike a standard acoustic guitar guitar – exists).

Invented in 1932, the electric guitar was adopted by jazz guitar players, who wanted to play single-note guitar solos in large big band ensembles.

The sound of an electric guitar can be modified by new playing techniques such as string bending, tapping, and hammering-on, using audio feedback, or slide guitar playing.

The demand for amplified guitars began during the big band era; as orchestras increased in size, guitar players soon realized the necessity in guitar amplification and electrification.

Electric Guitar designs eventually became culturally important and visually iconic, with various model companies selling miniature model versions of particularly famous electric guitars, for example the Gibson SG used by Angus Young from the group AC/DC. [edit].

Electric acoustic guitars should not be confused with semi-acoustic guitars, which have pickups of the type found on solid-body electric guitars, or solid-body hybrid guitars with piezoelectric pickups.

Compared to an acoustic guitar, which has a hollow body, electric guitars make much less audible sound when their strings are plucked, so electric guitars are normally plugged into a guitar amplifier and speaker.

New & Used Electric Guitars

Electric guitars have come to define the very soul of rock, country and countless other genres of popular music.

With brands like Gibson, Fender, Rickenbacker, Gretsch and others elevating and perfecting the format in the ’50s, electric guitars have evolved over the decades with new designs constantly pushing the instrument into new territory.

Auxiliary Power Unit

Because vehicles in operation can provide significant power from the alternator, and because APUs seem to offer few additional benefits compared with this power source, the opportunity for APUs would seem to be restricted to those vehicles that require significant power when idling or stationary, or that have exceptional power demands during use.

The APU enhances capability by permitting the aircraft to carry out various functions requiring electric power on the ground without need for a ground-based generating unit to be available at each airport.

To form the group weight of the APU we again multiply the APU weight by the proportionality constant kapug, that is, the likely APU group weight is approximately some multiple of the actual unit weight.

In a pure RE-EV vehicle there is no mechanical connection between the engine and the wheels, and therefore, as shown in Figure 2., the efficiency of energy conversion from the mechanical to electrical in the APU, and from electrical to mechanical in the motor and associated power electronics, must be considered when calculating the APU power.

APU Power Requirements of Major Aircraft ClassesThe output power range of APUs is between 10 kW and 300 kW, with bleed supplied requiring additional turbine power.

12.3.2 Auxiliary power for aerial and water vehiclesThe conventional APU in aircraft is a small gas turbine system that provides pneumatic and electrical power for various operations such as starting the main engines, lighting, and air conditioning.

In 2001, Jülich was involved in the German Zellen Und Stacks project to develop SOFC APUs for on-board power supplies in cars.390 Lightweight SOFC stacks were to reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions and were considered an ideal APU for diesel vehicles.

Whether you want to recharge your phone, heat food in a microwave or plug in a sleep apnea machine, the type of power the inverter uses is important.

Auxiliary Power Unit

APUs can provide power through single or three-phase systems.

The power section is the gas-generator portion of the engine and produces all the shaft power for the APU. [edit].

The load compressor is generally a shaft-mounted compressor that provides pneumatic power for the aircraft, though some APUs extract bleed air from the power section compressor.

There is also a starter motor connected through the gear train to perform the starting function of the APU. Some APU designs use a combination starter/generator for APU starting and electrical power generation to reduce complexity.

Safran produces helicopters and business jets APUs but stopped the large APUs since Labinal exited the APIC joint venture with Sundstrand in 1996.

During ascent, the APUs provided hydraulic power for gimballing of the Shuttle’s three engines and control of their large valves, and for movement of the control surfaces.

APUs are fitted to some tanks to provide electrical power without the high fuel consumption and large infrared signature of the main engine.

SKYbrary Aviation Safety

An Auxiliary Power Unit or APU allows an aircraft to operate autonomously without reliance on ground support equipment such as a ground power unit, an external air-conditioning unit or a high pressure air start cart.

The APU is a small jet engine which is normally located in the tail cone of the aircraft but, in some cases, is located in an engine nacelle or in the wheel well.

The APU can be started utilizing only the aircraft battery(s) and, once running, will provide electrical power to aircraft systems as well as bleed air for air conditioning and for engine start.

When the APU is certified for use in flight, the APU can be used, as required, to provide an additional source of electrical power in the event of the loss of an engine generator.

It can also be used as a source of bleed air for starter assist for an inflight engine relight or to power the air-conditioning packs in the event conditions or company policy dictate that the takeoff be conducted with the engine bleed turned off.

What Do Auxiliary Power Units Do On Aircraft?

An APU works in a similar way to an aircraft’s engine and has three roles: to supply conditioned air to the cabin, as a source of electrical power for the aircraft and lastly as a means of engine starting.

“Though failures are rare, sometimes the failure of the APU or the ground power unit will result in a loss of electrical power to the aircraft – and if its at night the aircraft will be plunged into darkness!”.

Also the white “APU GEN” indication at the top left shows the APU’s generator is not available as a power source for the aircraft.

Video of Auxiliary Power Unit/APU. Here’s a good video showing how pilots interact with the APU and how we control it from the flight deck.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Auxiliary Power UnitWhat is the difference between an APU and a GPU in aviation?

The APU is the power unit contained on an aircraft which can provide electrical and pneumatic power.

A GPU is a generator that is connected to an aircraft when it arrives at the gate and supplies electrical power to the aircraft.

What Is An APU?

Unlike the main engines, the APU does not provide thrust.

Just as the APU is started using battery power to turn the blades, the blades of the main engines must be turning before they can be started.

Pressure then builds up to further spin the engine and, once it reaches its idle power speed, the supply from the APU is removed.

The other engines are then started, using either the APU or high-pressure air from the already started engine.

In the event of engine failure, it can be used for either electrical power or bleed air to re-start the engines.

Although the engines were not re-started, the APU was used to provide electrical power and was later cited as critical to the outcome.

Air supplied from the APU to the engines is at very high pressure, so traveling the distance to the engines has minimal effect.

We Track Down The Smallest Mini Excavators On The Market

The company is credited with building the first compact excavator, introducing it to the Japanese market in 1969.

In 2016, Bobcat rolled out a prototype of an electric compact excavator as of December, the company had not introduced it to market.

Bobcat’s conventional compact excavator is the recently re-designated E10, which was introduced to the market in 2008 as model 418.

Although a Gehl hybrid excavator is potentially in the future, its newest entry in the compact excavator market is the conventionally powered M08. Rental customers and Gehl dealers asked the company to produce something smaller than the popular Gehl Z17 1.7-ton model and the M08 is the result.

In the first nine months of 2017, an estimated 900 of the 1-metric-ton-and-smaller excavators and more than 3,200 of the 1- to 2-metric ton machines were sold.

In two of the last three years, sales of small excavators have seen double-digit growth.

The sweet spot in the mini excavator market right now is the 3- to 4-metric ton segment.

Compact Excavator

A compact or mini excavator is a tracked or wheeled vehicle with an approximate operating weight from 0.7 to 8.5 tonnes.

The compact excavator’s work group and blade are activated by hydraulic fluid acting upon hydraulic cylinders.

Most compact hydraulic excavators have three distinct assemblies: house, undercarriage and workgroup.

The workgroup of a compact hydraulic excavator consists of the boom, dipper or arm, and attachment.

Independent boom swing is one of the major advantages of a compact excavator over other excavation equipment.

In recent years, hydraulic excavator capabilities have expanded far beyond excavation tasks.

With the advent of hydraulic powered attachments such as a tiltrotator, breaker, a grapple or an auger, the excavator is frequently used in many applications other than excavation and with the tiltrotator attachment, actually serves as an effective tool carrier.

4 Ways Your Social Media Is Controlling You, And How To Overcome Them

You can take back control of your social media use, but first, you need to see how it impacts you.

YOU MIGHT HAVE A PROBLEM. Studies show that social media platforms can be addictive and cause mental distress.

Even if people on social media aren’t authorities, you can still find yourself drawn to those with the same opinions and perspectives as you, creating an “Echo chamber” of your thoughts the more you interact with them.

If you’re in an echo chamber, you can miss how your audience is evolving, how your competition is rising, or even more great new ideas you could be using.

YOU’RE COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS. If you’re spending a significant portion of your day looking at companies, brands, and people seemingly living the life and success you wish you had, then there’s a good chance that social media has negatively affected your self-esteem.

Social media does a fantastic job of helping people celebrate their wins but not the hard work that went into them.

The purpose of social media is to see what people are talking about with each other.

Is Russia’S Invasion Of Ukraine The First Social Media War?

A side note of Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine could be that it is now the “First social media war,” as individuals on the ground in the besieged nation are able to share real-time reports from the frontlines.

The Spanish-American War has long been referred to as the first “Media war” as its military action was precipitated by media involvement.

“As first witnessed with the Arab Spring, the power of social media to effect social change, bolster support and condemnation for a cause, and even possibly bring down governments is proving quite formidable,” said Kent Bausman, Ph.D., professor of sociology in the Online Sociology Program at Maryville University.

The scale and scope of social media has dramatically evolved since the Arab Spring of 2011, when social media provided real time reporting from the ground.

“In the past, nation-states have had the upper hand in controlling the narrative of conflicts. Social media changed all that. Furthermore, in the case of warfare, social media use might even be construed as a form of guerrilla tactics. For example, it was reported early on that Russia had hacked Ukraine’s Ministry of Information. This could have really paralyzed the Ukrainian resistance efforts, but instead, this is where social media filled that necessary communication void. President Zelenskyy was able to take to social media, in particular Facebook, and communicate reassurance to the Ukrainian people.”

“This is particularly true in the U.S., as many news entities have completely abandoned the keeping of news divisions overseas. Much of the U.S. reporting of this conflict appears to be sourced through many social media accounts. Obviously, social media is proving to be an essential mechanism in getting on-ground real-time reporting of a dangerous event.”

“There already are a number of social media postings claiming to document what is happening in Ukraine only that were to be proven untrue. The dangers of misinformation could release a powder keg of conflict in the region, but its use for relating real time information and galvanizing support may just prove to be Putin’s Achilles heel.”

Sibanye Stillwater 2021 Net Pft $2.23B

Sibanye-Stillwater Ltd. on Thursday reported a record profit for 2021, as all segments achieved production guidance targets.

The South African precious-metals mining company made a net profit of $2.23 billion last year up from $1.77 billion in 2020.

Sibanye-Stillwater Faces $1.2bn Claim For Dropping Brazil Mine Deal

Investment firm Appian Capital Advisory has served Sibanye-Stillwater with a notice of claim seeking compensation for the South African miner’s termination of a planned acquisition of two mines in Brazil.

London-based Appian, advising two affiliated private equity funds which own the Brazilian mines, said the transaction was worth over $1.2bn and called Sibanye’s failure to close on it “Unlawful”.

Sibanye abandoned the deal on 24 January, only three months after it had been announced, citing geotechnical instability at the Santa Rita nickel mine, which it said would have had a material and adverse impact on operations there.

Appian on Wednesday said the instability was a crack in the mine’s pit wall and that it has had no impact on the open-pit mine’s life.

Sibanye said that Appian’s public characterisation of the geotechnical event was “Both superficial and wrong” and that if Appian decides to commence legal proceedings, it would vigorously defend its position.

Sibanye had planned to report 2021 operating and financial results on 17 February but delayed the release to 3 March, saying completion was taking longer than planned.

The acquisition of the Santa Rita nickel mine and Serrote copper mine was meant to bolster Sibanye’s battery metals portfolio as the miner seeks to diversify away from platinum and gold.

Sibanye-Stillwater turns lower after reporting its platinum group metals and gold resources for its South African operations fell in 2021 from a year earlier.

The miner said total PGM resources fell to 318.7M oz at year-end 2021 from 391.9M oz.

In 2020, which includes resources in the measured, indicated and inferred categories across both the Americas and Southern Africa operations.

South African PGM operations have mineral resources of 174.7M oz of platinum, palladium, rhodium and gold, and mineral reserves of 32.2M oz of 4E, while South African gold mineral resources fell 7% to 74.6M oz and mineral reserves decreased 15.9% to 13.1M oz.

The company also declared a maiden lithium mineral resource of 78.5K tons of lithium oxide and a maiden zinc mineral reserve of 1.02B lbs.

Earlier, Appian Capital served Sibanye with a notice of claim seeking compensation for the termination of a planned billion-dollar acquisition of two mines in Brazil.

Appian Serves $1.2bn Claim Against Sibanye-Stillwater Over Withdrawal From Nickel Deal

APPIAN Capital Advisory is to sue Sibanye-Stillwater for at least $1.2bn following the South African firm’s decision to terminate the purchase two base metal mines.

Announcing the deal termination in January, Sibanye-Stillwater said “a geotechnical event” at the Santa Rita nickel mine had drastically reduced the six year life of its open pit by two or three years.

Sibanye-Stillwater responded to Appian’s statement today saying its timing was designed to create a trial by media situation ahead of its full-year results presentation.

Sibanye-Stillwater agreed in October to buy Atlantic Nickel and Mineração Vale Verde, companies that hold Santa Rita as well as Serrote, a copper mine that is ramping up to full production.

“To justify its termination, Sibanye incorrectly stated, both to Appian and the public, that a material and adverse event had occurred at the Santa Rita mine. Appian believes this characterisation is false, damaging and defamatory.”

Sibanye-Stillwater said in the wake of the Atlantic Nickel and MVV terminations that it would press ahead with its diversification plans, although it might be harder to progress.

The timing of Appian’s announcement to pursue legal claim was described by Sibanye-Stillwater as “An apparent effort to disrupt the announcement of our results, and to engage in litigation via the media”.

Sibanye-Stillwater

Sibanye-Stillwater is a multinational precious metals mining company, revealing a diverse portfolio of platinum group metals in South Africa and the United States, gold and base metals operations and various mining projects in South Africa and the Americas.

In 2012, Gold Fields Limited unbundled its subsidiary, GFI Mining South Africa Proprietary Limited, which was then renamed Sibanye Gold Limited, and consisted of the KDC and Beatrix mines, as well as an array of support service entities in South Africa.

On 30 August 2017, following the successful purchase of the Stillwater mine in Montana, Sibanye Gold Limited began trading as Sibanye-Stillwater and reorganized its operations by region – Southern Africa and the United States.

The Marikana massacre was the killing of thirty-four miners by the South African Police Service on 16 August 2012, during a wildcat strike at the Lonmin platinum mine in Marikana, Rustenburg, North West province, South Africa.

The GDP of South Africa contracted in the first quarter of 2014, pulled down by the steepest drop in mining production in 50 years.

The incident resulted in pressure from labour unions, including the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, for mine management to address safety concerns before it can reopen.

In early 2018, 20 out of the 45 mining deaths in South Africa occurred at Sibanye Stillwater.

What Is Content Creation?

The difference between high-quality and poor-quality content is stark – great content rises to the surface while poor content disappears into the void of the internet.

We’ll take a deeper look at some of the most common forms of content marketing, but first let’s understand how SEO plays a role in content creation.

Ultimately, an ideal content creation process gets content moving in a timely manner, producing an end product that gets results.

You can take an old series of blogs, update the content as needed, and republish the content as an eBook.

Beware – fatigue can lead to content creator apathy, a dangerous condition where you produce low-effort content simply to fill your editorial calendar.

Here’s why: Content creation is one of the most important and valuable ways to grow your business; at the same time, content creators face an incredibly competitive field.

While content marketers often wear many hats, it’s ideal to have a team that can evenly share the burden of producing effective content again and again.

What Is Content Creation? 3 Steps To Creating Web Content

Content creation is the single most time-consuming responsibility for today’s content marketers.

Content creation is the process of identifying a new topic you want to write about, deciding which form you want the content to take, formalizing your strategy, and then actually producing it.

Most content creation processes involve thorough rounds of edits with other stakeholders before content is ready for publish.

Because content can take many forms – blog post, video, eBook, Tweet, infographic, advertisement, to name a few – the content creation process is nuanced and not always as simple as it might seem.

We’ll walk you through the content creation process from start to finish, and demonstrate how creating great content can help your audiences and customers find solutions and answers to their problems.

Understanding how your competitors approach a topic will help you differentiate your brand’s voice, approach, and content from theirs, identify gaps in their content strategy, and help your content stand out in the sales process.

When creating web content you’ll need to select a keyword to target so that you can integrate the keyword appropriately into your content as you write, not after the fact.

Content Creation: The Complete Guide For Beginners

Content creation is the process of finding topics to attract your target audience, then planning, creating, and publishing content about those topics.

It’s important to understand that you shouldn’t dive into content creation without first creating a solid content strategy.

If you’re creating content for YouTube, the content type is already decided for you: video.

Content Creation: The Essential Guide To Developing A Workflow That Works Every Time

Creating content takes a lot of effort, which is why it’s so important to be confident that the content created is effective, and you haven’t wasted lots of time and money creating content that isn’t fit for purpose.

The cost of creating content depends on a number of different factors, including the content creation process that you follow and who is involved in creating the content.

These apply to website content creation, all digital content creation, marketing content creation, social content creation, and all other content types, formats, and channels.

Wherever you’re serving information to your audience, having a plan in place will help you operationalise your content creation, especially important for the ongoing day-to-day content creation and for scaling content creation efforts.

Content Creation Process: The Essential Marketing Guide

It’s a distinction most content marketers are familiar with – especially if your job is to spin rough, disorganized insights and ideas into high-performing content gold.

From an outsider’s view, it can be easy to assume content creators simply generate imaginative ideas, write them, and then publish them as a blog post, email message, or other content piece.

Hiring a dedicated writing staff: If you place a higher priority on content creation, want to produce a high volume of content, or need content to fill multiple channels and platforms at once, it may be worth having full-time writing talent to maintain control of the process.

Automating the process: While content creation via artificial intelligence is in its early stages, every indication signals that automation will play a significant role in content marketing in the near future.

In other words, if you aren’t working with the right content formats and types to draw the attention of your target audience or aren’t positioning your content in the right way to drive engagement and conversion, you’ll needlessly spin the wheels of your content engine with nothing tangible to show for your efforts.

Make sure you have a prioritization process – like the core content strategy matrix Meghan Casey uses – to gauge the comparative value and urgency of your content ideas and help you decide which ones to move forward with.

Regardless of the creative process, content creation boils down to one essential step: the physical act of writing your stories.

Digital Content

Digital content is any content that exists in the form of digital data.

Also known as digital media, digital content is stored on digital or analog storage in specific formats.

Viewed narrowly, digital content includes popular media types, while a broader approach considers any type of digital information as digital content.

As information became increasingly more accessible, the Digital Revolution also facilitated the creation of digital content.

Despite an evolution to digital technology, which occurred somewhere between the late 1950s and 1970s, distribution of digital content did not begin until the late 1990s with the rise in popularity of the Internet.

In the past, digital content was primarily distributed through computers and the Internet, yet methods of distribution are rapidly changing as the Digital Revolution brings new channels, such as mobile apps and eBooks.

While new technologies have made digital content available to large audiences, managing copyright and limiting content movement will continue to be an issue that digital content creators face in the future.

Business Companion

Chapter 3 of the Consumer Rights Act 2015 covers contracts between a trader and consumer in relation to digital content, as distinct from goods and services, whilst also clarifying that any goods containing faulty digital content are protected by the remedies provided for faulty goods.

Although the Act sets out the specific rights consumers have when buying digital content, it recognises that in reality traders supply a mixture of goods, services and digital content – for example, the delivery of a compact disc containing music to a consumer’s home.

The free digital content is supplied with goods or services or other digital content for which the consumer pays a price.

The free digital content is not generally available to consumers unless they have paid a price for it, or for goods or services or other digital content.

If the original contract for the supply of digital content allows the trader or a third party to modify that content then the contract’s terms regarding quality, fitness for a particular purpose and description apply equally to the modified digital content as they did to that supplied after the original contract.

Some contracts to supply digital content to a consumer involve the use of a processing facility, which allows the trader to receive digital content from the consumer and to transmit digital content to the consumer.

Digital Content Defined

Typically, digital content refers to information available for download or distribution on electronic media such as an ebook or iTunes song, but many in the content industry argue that digital content is anything that can be published.

If digital content is considered any piece of information that is published, that means with every tweet you share, every video you upload to Facebook, and every time you update your blog, you are taking on the role of a digital content creator.

Perhaps one of the biggest hot button topics surrounding digital content is the free vs. paid content debate.

Should consumers pay for their digital content or should it be given to them for free? If it is provided for free, can a business still make money from their content? This debate is especially pertinent in the entertainment and media industry, which has come under fire in recent years regarding how digital content such as movies and music is handled online.

With so many different types of content available, the question plaguing information experts today isn’t what kind of content to create, but how to deliver it.

To be successful in the digital content realm, content creators must determine the best way to present their digital content to consumers.

That’s why we are strong proponents of the Content Inc. business model, which can be used by any-sized organization as a business model for content creators.
