Post Idea #1: Ignition coil

Ignition Coil

An ignition coil is an induction coil in an automobile’s ignition system that transforms the battery’s voltage to the thousands of volts needed to create an electric spark in the spark plugs to ignite the fuel.

More recent electronic ignition systems use a power transistor to provide pulses to the ignition coil.

An ignition coil consists of a laminated iron core surrounded by two coils of copper wire.

Since it has a capacitor connected across it, the primary winding and the capacitor form a tuned circuit, and as the stored energy oscillates between the inductor formed by the coil and the capacitor, the changing magnetic field in the core of the coil induces a much larger voltage in the secondary of the coil.

When batteries became common in automobiles for cranking and lighting, the ignition coil system displaced magneto ignition.

Much smaller coils are used with one coil for each spark plug or one coil serving two spark plugs.

A large ignition coil puts out about 40 kV, and a small one such as from a lawn mower puts out about 15 kV. These coils may be remotely mounted or they may be placed on top of the spark plug, known as direct ignition or coil-on-plug.

Symptoms Of A Bad Or Failing Ignition Coil

Ignition coils are an electronic engine management component that are a part of the vehicle’s ignition system.

The ignition coil functions as an induction coil that converts the vehicle’s 12 volts into the several thousand that are required to jump the spark plug gap and ignite the engine’s air-fuel mixture.

Some ignition systems will use one coil to provide the spark for all of the cylinders, however most newer designs use an individual coil for each cylinder.

Usually a faulty ignition coil will produce a few symptoms that alert the driver of a potential issue.

One of the most common symptoms associated with a faulty ignition coil is engine performance issues.

The Check Engine Light will also be set off if the computer detects an issue with the ignition coil signal or circuit, such as when a coil burns out or shorts.

For vehicles that use a single ignition coil as the source of spark for all of the cylinders, a faulty coil will affect the operation of the entire engine.

Symptoms Of A Bad Ignition Coil: All That You Need To Know – Rx Mechanic

The symptoms of a bad ignition coil are mostly manifested as difficulties starting the car, a stalling engine, and loss of power while on the road. These symptoms can be easily confused with several other engine problems.

We need to know how to diagnose a bad ignition coil.

Because a coil pack ignition system involves fewer moving parts, identifying ignition coil problems and their correction poses challenges to a car owner.

What Does an Ignition Coil Do? A vehicle ignition coil is a transformer that amplifies the small voltage from a car battery into enough power capable of igniting the fuel and starting the engine.

Since a car ignition coil acts as a step-up transformer, the secondary coil has many more turns than the primary coil.

Motorists should look out for ignition coil failure causes and the symptoms of coil malfunction for early correction.

If your car has multiple ignition coils, testing all of them is the only way how to tell which ignition coil is bad. Most times ignition coils malfunction because of spark plugs or they may return good readings but have physical damage and weakened insulation.

How To Diagnose And Test An Ignition Coil

HOW AN IGNITION COIL WORKS. Inside every ignition coil are two sets of windings around a laminated or segmented iron core.

IGNITION COIL DIAGNOSIS. When a coil failure occurs on a distributor ignition system, it affects all the cylinders.

HOW TO TEST AN IGNITION COIL. WARNING: Never pull off a plug wire or the coil’s high voltage output wire to test for a spark.

To test the ignition coil connect the ohmmeter’s two test leads to the coils primary terminals.

Some auto parts stores have an ignition coil bench tester that can simulate a running engine to test coil function and output.

If your coil passes all tests but your engine has a misfire, the problem is likely a bad spark plug, a bad wiring connector at the coil, or a bad ignition control module or PCM. If the coil fails any part of the test, you need a new coil.

The partners formed a subsidiary called the Mogul Metal Company where they launched various bearing innovations.

In 1924, the Muzzy-Lyon Company and Federal Bearings and Bushing, an engine bearings and bushings manufacturing company founded in 1915 by a group of Detroit businessmen, merged to become Federal-Mogul Corporation.

In 1955, the company acquired National Motor Bearing Company, and the company name was changed to Federal-Mogul Bower.

The large number of products liability claims that came with the Turner & Newall acquisition were largely responsible for Federal-Mogul’s federal Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in 2002.

During the company’s restructuring, Federal-Mogul Corporation acquired multiple companies including Robert G. Evans Co., Hanauer Machine Works, Inc., Metaltec, Inc., Mather Co. and Fel-Pro, Inc. The company emerged from Chapter 11 reorganization in January 2008, and in April 2008, the company listed Class A common stock on NASDAQ under the trading symbol FDML. In June 2010, Federal-Mogul expanded further into Asia by opening a headquarters and technical center in Shanghai, China.

In July 2012, Federal-Mogul announced a definitive agreement to purchase the BERU spark plug business from BorgWarner Inc. In September 2014, the company formally announced the long pending modification to the company’s corporate structure would be a split into two separate companies, Federal-Mogul Powertrain, and Federal-Mogul Motorparts.

In January 2017, majority shareholder Carl Icahn completed a $300 million deal for all of Federal-Mogul’s stock, after which he changed the company from a public company to a private company.

Federal-Mogul Corporation

The company rose to prominence through a series of expansions and acquisitions, which included the Bearing Company of America in 1953, the Bower Roller Bearing Company in 1955, and National Seal in 1956.

As a result of the increased business, the partners formed a subsidiary company called the Mogul Metal Company.

The companies merged in 1924, taking the name Federal-Mogul Corporation.

In 1936, the corporation acquired the Indianapolis-based Superior Bearings Company, and, in 1937, the service division went international with the acquisition of the former Watkins Rebabbitting Limited, with Canadian locations in Toronto, Montreal, and Winnipeg.

The corporation announced its third major merger in as many years, when The National Motor Bearing Company joined the new Federal-Mogul-Bower Bearing Corporation in July 1956.

Post Idea #4: Ignition system

Related Articles – Summarized

Ignition System

An ignition system generates a spark or heats an electrode to a high temperature to ignite a fuel-air mixture in spark ignition internal combustion engines, oil-fired and gas-fired boilers, rocket engines, etc.

Some older automobiles had both a magneto system and a battery actuated system running simultaneously to ensure proper ignition under all conditions with the limited performance each system provided at the time.

The Kettering system became the primary ignition system for many years in the automotive industry due to its lower cost, and relative simplicity.

The ignition system is typically controlled by a key operated Ignition switch.

External to the distributor is the ignition coil, the spark plugs and wires linking the distributor to the spark plugs and ignition coil.

Digital electronic ignition modules can be designed as either capacitor discharge ignition or inductive discharge ignition systems.

Ignition system John A. Hawthorne 1964/1967 comments about Kettering ignition system: “Practical efforts to improve or supplant this system have failed, and it has remained virtually unchanged through the years. However, the present trend toward higher performance automobile engines threatens to render this tried and true system obsolete. The principal limitation of the Kettering system is, as typically applied, the inability to develop adequate levels of spark plug gap energy without sacrificing longevity of the ignition points or the transformer coil. The inherent inefficiency of the system is particularly apparent at higher engine speeds.”

How The Ignition System Works

The bowl houses the contact-breaker points, rotor arm, and a device for altering the ignition timing.

The distributor cap is made of nonconductive plastic, and the current is fed to its central electrode.

The rotor arm is fitted on top of the central shaft, and connects to the central electrode by means of a metal spring or spring-loaded brush in the top of the distributor cap.

The current enters the cap through the central electrode, passes to the centre of the rotor arm through the brush, and is distributed to each plug as the rotor arm revolves.

As the rotor arm approaches a segment, the contact-breaker points open and HT current passes through the rotor arm to the appropriate sparkplug lead. The contact-breaker points are mounted inside the distributor.

In some modern ignition systems, micro-electronics ensure the optimum ignition timing for all engine speeds and engine load conditions.

Chambers in the cylinder head. HT current passes from each segment on the distributor cap down the plug leads to the plug caps.

If you’re serious about your precious vehicle, knowing how the different types of ignition system work and their advantages and disadvantages is useful in choosing the right spark plug that works most effectively given the performance requirements of the ignition system.

Currently, there are four types of ignition systems used in most cars and trucks, by order of invention: conventional breaker-point ignitions, high energy ignitions, distributor-less ignition and coil-on-plug ignitions.

The oldest type of ignition system is the conventional breaker-point ignition system, which sometimes is also called mechanical ignition systems.

A high energy ignition system that relied less on mechanical workings: the electronic ignition system.

Like early breaker-point ignition systems, electronic systems have two ignition coils and accordingly two circuits, a primary circuit and a secondary circuit.

These systems are very different from breaker-point and electronic ignition systems, The ignition coils now sit directly on top of the spark plugs, spark plug wires are eliminated, and the system is fully electronic.

The third types of ignition system is the distributor-less, also called waste spark ignition system.

What Is Ignition System?- Types, Parts, And Working

An ignition system generates a spark or heats an electrode to a high temperature to ignite a fuel-air mixture in spark ignition internal combustion engines, oil-fired and gas-fired boilers, rocket engines, etc.

A vehicle ignition system is divided into two electrical circuits, the primary and the secondary.

The vehicle’s computer system uses engine sensors to regulate the electronic control module and instruct the ignition coils to ignite the spark plugs.

The second type of ignition system is distributorless ignition.

The distributorless ignition system may have one coil per cylinder or one coil for each pair of cylinders.

Electronic ignition system is the type of ignition system that uses electronic circuit, usually by transistors controlled by sensors to generate electronic pulses which in turn generate.

The need for higher mileage, reduced emissions and greater reliability has led to the development of the electronic ignition system.

How Automobile Ignition Systems Work

The ignition system on your car has to work in perfect concert with the rest of the engine.

The goal is to ignite the fuel at exactly the right time so that the expanding gases can do the maximum amount of work.

If the ignition system fires at the wrong time, power will fall and gas consumption and emissions can increase.

There is a small delay from the time of the spark to the time when the fuel/air mixture is all burning and the pressure in the cylinder reaches its maximum.

To make the best use of the fuel, the spark should occur before the piston reaches the top of the compression stroke, so by the time the piston starts down into its power stroke the pressures are high enough to start producing useful work.

Because the length of the stroke and the area of the piston are fixed, the only way to maximize work is by increasing pressure.

The timing of the spark is important, and the timing can either be advanced or retarded depending on conditions.

In this article, you’ll learn what is ignition system how it works? types of ignition system, working, diagram, and more.

The ignition system is one of the most important systems used in the I.C engines.

The ignition takes place inside the cylinder at the end of the compression stroke, the ignition system serves this purpose.

Compression ignition engine does not have such an ignition system.

The ignition system should function efficiently at the high and low speeds of the engine.

Spark Plug

If a spark plug were to protrude into the Wankel’s combustion chamber it would be hit by the passing apex seal, but if the plug were recessed to avoid this, mixture access to the spark would be reduced, leading to misfire or incomplete combustion.

The operating temperature of a spark plug is the actual physical temperature at the tip of the spark plug within the running engine, normally between 500 and 800 °C. This is important because it determines the efficiency of plug self-cleaning and is determined by a number of factors, but primarily the actual temperature within the combustion chamber.

A spark plug is said to be “Hot” if it is a better heat insulator, keeping more heat in the tip of the spark plug.

A spark plug is said to be “Cold” if it can conduct more heat out of the spark plug tip and lower the tip’s temperature.

Whether a spark plug is “Hot” or “Cold” is known as the heat range of the spark plug.

The heat range of a spark plug is affected by the construction of the spark plug: the types of materials used, the length of insulator and the surface area of the plug exposed within the combustion chamber.

Engine and spark plug manufacturers will publish information about the characteristic markings in spark plug reading charts.

A new iridium alloy tip with a diameter of 0.4 mm is laser welded to the tip of the center electrode to make the center electrode.

This lowers the spark voltage, secure reliable spark, reduces the quenching effect, and improves ignition performance.

Iridium, like platinum, is a precious metal and has extraordinarily superior properties for a spark plug electrode, for example high-temperature withstand, high strength, and low resistance.

In order to further improve oxidation resistance at high temperatures, DENSO developed a unique new iridium alloy containing rhodium.

Auto Shop For A Spark Plug Change

I got quotes going from wildly hallucinating at $400-$500 from Kal Tire, to more palatable sounding $120 or so at Auto Zone.

Are there any auto shops that are decently priced for a spark plug change, considering it would take about 30-45 mins of labor to change 4 spark plugs in a Honda Civic?

I went to Kal tire for an oil change and tire rotation, and I feel ripped off! I have a really small baby so I don’t have the time to do these small auto jobs myself anymore so I am looking for suggestions for an affordable shop.

Auto Zone sounds like a good deal at $120 but just wanted to check in to see if the community has other recommendations.

Edit: as a woman I get fairly outrageous quotes on the phone or in person.

Would prefer to go someplace that won’t rip me off!

Online Banking

The online banking system will typically connect to or be part of the core banking system operated by a bank to provide customers access to banking services in place of traditional branch banking.

Online banking significantly reduces the banks’ operating cost by reducing reliance on a branch network, and offers greater convenience to customers in time saving in coming to a branch and the convenience of being able to perform banking transactions even when branches are closed.

In the United States in-home banking was “Is still in its infancy” with banks “Cautiously testing consumer interest” in 1984, a year after online banking went national in the UK. At the time Chemical Bank in New York was “Still working out the bugs from its service, which offers somewhat limited features”.

In January 2015, WeBank, the online bank created by Tencent, started 4-month-long online banking trail operation.

In December 1995, Advance Bank acquired by St.George Bank, started to provide customers with online banking with the rollout of the C++ Internet banking program.

Mbanx was released at the very beginning of the internet banking revolution in Canada and was the first full-service online bank Also in 1996, RBC started providing banking information online and had the first personal computer banking software released that year In 1997, the bank ING Direct Canada was founded with almost entirely online banking using only small cafes for meetings and very few physical branches.

According to research by Online Banking Report, at the end of 1999 less than 0.4% of households in the U.S. were using online banking.

What Is Leadership? The Ultimate Guide

That’s because the ultimate definition of leadership is empowering others to become effective leaders as well.

In developing a grasp of true leadership meaning, you must ask yourself not only what is leadership.

What is great leadership? Great leadership – quality leadership – is servant leadership.

Whether you want to work on your own leadership skills or cultivate leaders within your organization, leadership development programs will help you get there.

Core leadership concepts How can I develop my leadership potential?

Tony Robbins’ Seven Qualities of Leadership teach us that there are seven areas of our lives we must master in order to be a great leader: energy, emotions, time, relationships, purpose, finances and our ability to celebrate victories.

Every great athlete has a coach and, fortunately for us, there are so many inspirational leaders that we don’t have to look far to pick up the core of the features, or qualities, of influence and leadership.

Leadership: What Is It?

Leadership captures the essentials of being able and prepared to inspire others.

Effective leadership is based upon ideas-both original and borrowed-that are effectively communicated to others in a way that engages them enough to act as the leader wants them to act.

In business, leadership is linked to performance, and any leadership definition has to take that into account.

While leadership isn’t intrinsically linked to profit, those who are viewed as effective leaders in corporate contexts are the ones who increase their company’s bottom line.

While there are people who seem to be naturally endowed with more leadership abilities than others, anyone can learn to become a leader by improving particular skills.

History is full of people who, while having no previous leadership experience, have stepped to the fore in crises and persuaded others to follow their suggested course of action.

Leadership vs. Management Leadership Management May or may not be a manager May or may not be a leader Must inspire followers May or may not inspire those under them Emphasizes innovation Emphasizes rationality and control May be unconcerned with preserving existing structures Seeks to work within and preserve existing corporate structures Typically operates with relative independence Typically a link in the corporate chain of command May be less concerned with interpersonal issues May be more concerned with interpersonal issues The terms leadership and management tend to be used interchangeably, but they’re not the same.

What Is Leadership?

For me, the best explanation of “What is Leadership” defined as: “Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal”.

The process of leadership is a transactional event between the leader and the followers, rather than a feature or feature of the leader.

The term “Process” relates to how a leader inspires his followers and is impacted by them.

Leadership therefore becomes a participatory experience for everybody.

Leadership involves influencing a group of individuals with a shared purpose.

The leadership of one individual is to persuade another group to cooperate towards a common goal.

The emphasis on shared objectives provides leadership a fundamental ethical tone, as it highlights the necessity for leaders to work with supporters to achieve particular objectives.

Understanding Leadership

Reprint: R0401K. The would-be analyst of leadership usually studies popularity, power, showmanship, or wisdom in long-range planning.

None of these qualities is the essence of leadership.

Leadership is the accomplishment of a goal through the direction of human assistants-a human and social achievement that stems from the leader’s understanding of his or her fellow workers and the relationship of their individual goals to the group’s aim.

Prentice calls for democratic leadership that, without creating anarchy, gives employees opportunities to learn and grow.

This concept, along with his rejection of the notion that leadership is the exercise of power or the possession of extraordinary analytical skill, foreshadows the work of more recent authors such as Abraham Zaleznik and Daniel Goleman, who have fundamentally changed the way we look at leadership.

Attempts to analyze leadership tend to fail because the would-be analyst misconceives his task.

Some leaders have these things, but they are not of the essence of leadership.

What Is Leadership?

I’ve now written several books on leadership for employee engagement, and yet it occurred to me that I never actually paused to define leadership.

Leadership has nothing to do with seniority or one’s position in the hierarchy of a company.

Leadership has nothing to do with personal attributes.

We don’t need extroverted charismatic traits to practice leadership.

DEFINITION: Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal.

Leadership stems from social influence, not authority or power.

Leadership requires others, and that implies they don’t need to be “Direct reports”.

We believe leaders should think and behave differently; to strive to achieve the pinnacle of leadership; to become Leaders Worth Following.

3 12 Principles of Great Leadership: Quotes and Tips About Leadership Styles 5 Leadership Values Before adopting the behaviors of a leader, it’s important to understand the core values of a Leader Worth Following.

Patrick Lencioni: Trust – Leading by Example “People will walk through fire for a leader that’s true and human.” – Patrick Lencioni The authentic leader is one who sets out to provide a genuine picture of who he/she is.

“Great leaders lead people in ways that their brains can actually follow” – Dr. Henry Cloud As your leadership responsibilities grow, it is easy to get caught up in greater complexities: the number of decisions you must make increases; the alternatives seem endless.

Check out an example of the power of simplicity from Henry Cloud, in “Leaders Create Focus, Which Leads to Brillant Simpicity:” When Steve Jobs came back to Apple, the first thing he did was start walking the halls and he found 30 versions of the Mac.

Dr. Tim Irwin: What Must Leaders Do When Conditions are Turbulent? “In turbulent times, leaders must get out in front and lead.” – Dr. Tim Irwin When you think of some of the greatest leaders in history, they all demonstrated the characteristic of bravery – whether in large or small ways.

“Beyond you leaders fearlessly and selflessly empower leaders around them as well as those coming along beside them.” – Andy Stanley As you observe leaders growing and having greater influence within an organization, it is easy to see how they might use that influence to benefit themselves, whether it is having decisions go their way or reaping the rewards of others’ success.

What Is A Compound Semiconductor

Transistors are made by holding a layer of one type of semiconductor between two layers of a different type of semiconductor.

The p-n junction is the boundary or interface between two types of semiconductor materials, p-type and n-type, inside a single semiconductor crystal.

A semiconductor is called a semiconductor because it is a type of material that has an electrical resistance that is between that of metals and that of insulators, so in a sense or “Semiconductor” it conducts electricity.

The silicon element is widely used because it is a semiconductor in semiconductor devices.

Electrons as charge carriers increases, making the resulting semiconductor an n-type semiconductor.

The pure form of a semiconductor is known as an internal semiconductor, and a semiconductor to which impurities are intentionally added to make it conductive is known as an external semiconductor.

An n-type semiconductor is an internal semiconductor doped with phosphorus, arsenic or antimony.

Compound Semiconductor

Compound semiconductors are the compounds of the elements of Groups II and VI as well as semiconductor substrates.

Are widely used for high speed semiconductor devices over Si. Recently, III-V compound semiconductor materials such as GaAs and InP were used for microelectronic and optoelectronic devices.

From these reasons, there are some reports on the improvement of compound semiconductor surface/interface characteristics by chemical treatment using H2S, Na2S,2S, and2Sx solutions [6-9.]. The surface treatment with these reagents induces the formation of passivation layer with sulfur and is often used to reduce the surface state density on the facets of optical devices and at the regrown interface.

In the mid-1990s the promise of real-time monitoring and control for compound semiconductors helped push development of fast, wide spectral range SE systems that could cover appropriate photon energies of semiconductor critical points.

The compound semiconductor materials allow monolithic integration of optoelectronic devices such as lasers, light-emitting diode, and photodiodes with micromechanical structures.

Micromachined InP/air gap distributed Bragg reflector-based tunable vertical cavity devices such as filters, VCSELs, and photodiodes are attracting much interest because of their unique features of a wide continuous wavelength tuning and 2D array integration, thus making it possible to realize dense wavelength division multiplexing systems on InP.Recently, some efforts have been directed toward employing wider band gap compound semiconductor materials such as gallium nitride and SiC for microsystems owing to their excellent electrical and mechanical properties with regard to chemical inertness and their high-temperature stability, which make them a suitable choice for MEMS applications in harsh environments.

Freestanding SiGe micro/nanostructures such as tubes, helical coils, and bridges have also been fabricated on SiGe.Microsystems have been successfully implemented on compound semiconductors; however, there is a skepticism with regard to the mechanical strength of some of the III-V compound semiconductors such as GaAs- and InP-based materials for microstructures.

What Are Compound Semiconductors?

Compound semiconductors are the next generation of semiconductors.

Semiconductors themselves began to be used extensively from the 1950s and it wasn’t long before research into compound semiconductors began.

There are a number of reasons why it took so long to develop compound semiconductors for commercial use: the difficulty in growing compound crystals, the high number of defects in the crystals, the greater fragility of the crystals and the high cost of making them, relative to silicon.

While the cost of manufacturing compound semiconductors has come down, it is still far higher than the production of silicon semiconductors.

What does all this have to do with 5G? A lot! Just as silicon semiconductors revolutionised and made possible the electronics industry, compound semiconductors will revolutionise technology and enable a wide range of developments, from 5G to robotics, more efficient renewable energy and autonomous vehicles.

Compound semiconductors will underpin the Internet of Things, which itself will not be possible without 5G. Compound semiconductors have numerous properties that will benefit the IoT. Key among them is the greater power efficiency that will be essential for battery-powered devices and the optical properties that enable them to be used in sensors that will deliver new imaging techniques for connected cars, healthcare and much, much more.

The UK has been conducting compound semiconductor research for over 20 years and has invested nearly £750m in research into compound semiconductor materials and the application of semiconductor devices.

Semiconductor device fabrication is the process used to manufacture semiconductor devices, typically the metal-oxide-semiconductor devices used in the integrated circuit chips such as modern computer processors, microcontrollers, and memory chips such as NAND flash and DRAM that are present in everyday electrical and electronic devices.

The entire manufacturing process takes time, from start to packaged chips ready for shipment, at least six to eight weeks and is performed in highly specialized semiconductor fabrication plants, also called foundries or fabs.

A specific semiconductor process has specific rules on the minimum size and spacing for features on each layer of the chip.

Early semiconductor processes had arbitrary names such as HMOS III, CHMOS V; later ones are referred to by size such as 90 nm process.

In semiconductor device fabrication, the various processing steps fall into four general categories: deposition, removal, patterning, and modification of electrical properties.

Once the front-end process has been completed, the semiconductor devices or chips are subjected to a variety of electrical tests to determine if they function properly.

Device yield must be kept high to reduce the selling price of the working chips since working chips have to pay for those chips that failed, and to reduce the cost of wafer processing.

Occupational Safety And Health Administration

The files provide technical chemical information, including chemical and physical properties, health effects, exposure limits, and recommendations for medical monitoring, personal protective equipment, and control procedures.

The photoresist is applied by delivering a small amount of the liquid to the center of the wafer, then spinning the wafer at high speed to spread the material over the entire surface in a thin, uniform coating.

Following exposure, the wafers are developed with aqueous solutions of either sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide.

Wet Chemical Etching: Wet etching is accomplished by submersion of the wafer in an acid bath.

The RF energy ionizes the gas and forms the etching plasma, which reacts with the wafers to form volatile products which are pumped away.

The high-velocity beam of ions is focused on the wafer, causing the dopant ions to strike the wafer surface and penetrate.

Usually, hydrogen chloride gas is first used to etch the wafers.

Semiconductor Device Fabrication

Semiconductor device fabrication is the process used to manufacture semiconductor devices, typically the metal-oxide-semiconductor devices used in the integrated circuit chips that are present in everyday electrical and electronic devices.

The entire manufacturing process, from start to packaged chips ready for shipment, takes six to eight weeks and is performed in highly specialized semiconductor fabrication plants, also called foundries or fabs.

Production in advanced fabrication facilities is completely automated and carried out in a hermetically sealed nitrogen environment to improve yield, with automated material handling systems taking care of the transport of wafers from machine to machine.

In semiconductor device fabrication, the various processing steps fall into four general categories: deposition, removal, patterning, and modification of electrical properties.

Wafer test metrology equipment is used to verify that the wafers haven’t been damaged by previous processing steps up until testing; if too many dies on one wafer have failed, the entire wafer is scrapped to avoid the costs of further processing.

Device yield or die yield is the number of working chips or dies on a wafer, given in percentage since the number of chips on a wafer can vary depending on the chips’ size and the wafer’s diameter.

Device yield must be kept high to reduce the selling price of the working chips since working chips have to pay for those chips that failed, and to reduce the cost of wafer processing.

Eight Major Steps To Semiconductor Fabrication, Part 1: Creating The Wafer – Samsung Global Newsroom

Read on for the first part of the series, which introduces the “Canvas” for integrated circuits, otherwise known as the silicon wafer.

The largest wafer diameter used in semiconductor fabrication today is 12 inches, or 300mm.

The flawless surface allows the circuit patterns to print better on the wafer surface during the lithography process, which we will cover in a later posting.

Each part of a finished wafer has a different name and function.

Edge Die: dies around the edge of a wafer considered production loss; larger wafers would relatively have less chip loss.

Flat Zone: one edge of a wafer that is cut off flat to help identify the wafer’s orientation and type.

Want to know what happens next? Then, stay tuned for Part 2, as Samsung Tomorrow will take you through the disc production stage by discussing the oxidation process of the wafer next week.

A large wafer fab can process 40,000 silicon wafers into circuits each month.

Liquid photoresist is placed on the wafer, and the wafer is spun at high speed to produce a thin, uniform coating.

3.9 TESTING, ASSEMBLY, AND QUALIFICATION After the wafer fabrication process is completed, individual ICs are electrically probed on the wafer to determine which IC chips are functional.

If electrical contact is to be made to the P-type substrate, the oxide grown on the back of the wafer in step 2 must be removed while the front of the wafer is protected with photoresist as shown in step 11.

Understanding The Semiconductor Industry

I said semiconductor MATERIALS. If the term semiconductor is commonly used to talk about chips, it is actually a misuse of language.

The interconnections between these two devices are made from a thin substrate of semiconductor material.

We take a block of semiconductor material that we cut into an extremely thin and perfectly polished slice.

The process of building a semiconductor plant is extremely expensive in terms of capital, time and complexity.

Workers need specialized training to handle the toxic chemicals used in the semiconductor manufacturing process, creating another bottleneck to increasing the workforce.

The Oregonian recently reported that Intel, the world’s largest semiconductor company, is even running a “Help wanted” TV and radio ad campaign aimed at students who are still in college to work part-time when they are not in class.

This raises the question of whether the fabless-foundry model will eventually dominate the semiconductor industry or whether it will only grow to some extent.

Non-Stop Direct Flights

Direct flights between cities Travelmath provides an online direct flight finder to help you determine whether there is a non-stop flight to your destination.

Nonstop flights can be faster, since they don’t require you to change planes or stop at a connecting airport.

Sometimes you can’t find any non-stop flights between two cities.

In that case, you may want to search for a direct connection that goes through an airline’s hub.

You can use the flight search engine on this site to find the best airline routes for your trip.

Enter any city or IATA airport code to check for direct flights.

If you’re just trying to figure out frequent flyer miles, you may want to get the flight distance or flight time.

What Does Direct Flight Mean?

A flight in which the passenger makes intermediate stops but does not change aircraft.

A flight where the bird’s altitude does not change significantly with each wing beat.

A direct flight in the aviation industry is any flight between two points by an airline with no change in flight numbers, which may include a stop over at an intermediate point.

When there is a change in flight number, the subsequent flight is referred to as a connecting flight.

Sher Baz:.It is a very difficult journey, but I have to make it because there is no direct flight.

What’S The Difference?

As the name suggests, non-stop will fly between two cities without other stops, direct flights may have them.

A direct flight refers to a flight between two cities, with a single flight number.

An airline may advertise, and sell, a flight between two cities – carrying a single flight number – but this does not need to be offered as a single non-stop flight.

Cathay Pacific, for example, offers several flights a day between Hong Kong and Singapore, all carry a single flight number but some of them make a stop in Bangkok.

British Airways daily flight BA15 from London to Sydney, for example, involves a stop in Singapore, so it is direct but not non-stop.

Cathay Pacific flights, for example, from Hong Kong to Singapore are not necessarily more expensive on the non-stop flights but are certainly preferable and worth spotting when booking.

Would you like to share any thoughts or comments on direct vs non-stop flights? With many longer routes passengers may prefer to stop, or change planes, rather than stay on board for so long – are you one of them?

Direct Flights Vs Non-Stop Flights

Many people think that nonstop and direct flights are the same with interchangeable terms, but this is not true.

There is a lot of difference between non-stop flights and direct flights although both seem to mean the same.

Let us discuss what is a ‘Direct flight’ and answer the question “Is a non-stop flight the same as a direct flight”? We will also tell you how ‘connecting flight’ can relate to a ‘direct flight’.

Non-Stop FlightsNon-stop flights, as the name suggests, make no stops or layovers during the journey and proceed directly to their destination, such as a coast to coast flight from Tampa airport to Oakland OAK. Generally speaking, a non-stop flight is the quickest most direct way to fly from point A to point B. Almost all regional and low-cost airlines operate exclusively non-stop flights.

Direct FlightsDirect flights also get you from point A to point B, but there may be a stop during the journey.

While a direct flight is not a non-stop flight, you still have to land at a connecting city or airline hub.

The passengers who are traveling on direct flights may need to make a stop at midpoint and remain seated on the plane.

Direct Flight

A direct flight in the aviation industry is any flight between two points by an airline with no change in flight numbers, which may include one or more stops at an intermediate point(s).

Direct flights are often confused with non-stop flights, which are a special case of direct flights involving no intermediate stops.

When there is a change in flight number, the subsequent flight is referred to as a connecting flight.

In relation to this, a direct flight with stopovers may or may not involve a change in the flight crew.

Airlines may also market connections to a consolidation airport, usually an airline hub, where the continuation of the flight from multiple aircraft is to a single aircraft listed under several flight numbers.

Unlike traditional direct flights, multiple legs of such ‘direct’ flight actually operate as individual/independent legs, such that the latter leg can operate without any dependency or consideration of the former leg.

In other words, the flight that comprises the latter leg can depart even if the flight that comprised the former leg failed to arrive.

Medical Imaging

Medical imaging refers to several different technologies that are used to view the human body in order to diagnose, monitor, or treat medical conditions.

Each type of technology gives different information about the area of the body being studied or treated, related to possible disease, injury, or the effectiveness of medical treatment.

Medical Imaging

Medical imaging is the technique and process of imaging the interior of a body for clinical analysis and medical intervention, as well as visual representation of the function of some organs or tissues.

Although imaging of removed organs and tissues can be performed for medical reasons, such procedures are usually considered part of pathology instead of medical imaging.

As a discipline and in its widest sense, it is part of biological imaging and incorporates radiology, which uses the imaging technologies of X-ray radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound, endoscopy, elastography, tactile imaging, thermography, medical photography, and nuclear medicine functional imaging techniques as positron emission tomography and single-photon emission computed tomography.

In the clinical context, “Invisible light” medical imaging is generally equated to radiology or “Clinical imaging.” “Visible light” medical imaging involves digital video or still pictures that can be seen without special equipment.

As a field of scientific investigation, medical imaging constitutes a sub-discipline of biomedical engineering, medical physics or medicine depending on the context: Research and development in the area of instrumentation, image acquisition, modeling and quantification are usually the preserve of biomedical engineering, medical physics, and computer science; Research into the application and interpretation of medical images is usually the preserve of radiology and the medical sub-discipline relevant to medical condition or area of medical science under investigation.

Certain specialised imaging contract research organizations provide end to end medical imaging services, from protocol design and site management through to data quality assurance and image analysis.

While there has not been any definitive legal decision in the matter, at least one study has indicated that medical imaging may contain biometric information that can uniquely identify a person, and so may qualify as PHI. The UK General Medical Council’s ethical guidelines indicate that the Council does not require consent prior to secondary uses of X-ray images.

What Is Medical Imaging?

Medical imaging is a discipline within the medical field which involves the use of technology to take images of the inside of the human body.

Medical imaging is sometimes referred to as diagnostic imaging, because it is frequently used to help doctors arrive at a diagnosis, and there are a number of different types of technology used in imaging.

One of the most famous types of diagnostic imaging is the x-ray, which uses radiation to take a static image of a specific area of the body.

Medical imaging can also produce dynamic images, such as scans of brain activity or pictures of the heart in motion which can be used to look for diagnostic issues which would not appear in a static image.

Some imaging studies simply require a capture of an image, while others involve the introduction of a contrast material to the body.

New technology for medical imaging is being developed all the time, including machines which are less invasive and technology which reduces the need for radioactive materials and other harmful substances in imaging.

When a doctor orders a medical imaging study of a patient, he or she may go over the procedure or ask a nurse to provide the patient with information so that he or she knows what to expect.

What Are Cochlear Implants For Hearing?

A cochlear implant is very different from a hearing aid.

Hearing through a cochlear implant is different from normal hearing and takes time to learn or relearn.

The FDA first approved cochlear implants in the mid-1980s to treat hearing loss in adults.

Research has shown that when these children receive a cochlear implant followed by intensive therapy before they are 18 months old, they are better able to hear, comprehend sound and music, and speak than their peers who receive implants when they are older.

Some adults who have lost all or most of their hearing later in life can also benefit from cochlear implants.

Use of a cochlear implant requires both a surgical procedure and significant therapy to learn or relearn the sense of hearing.

Researchers also are looking at the potential benefits of pairing a cochlear implant in one ear with either another cochlear implant or a hearing aid in the other ear.

What Is A Cochlear Implant?

A cochlear implant is an implanted electronic hearing device, designed to produce useful hearing sensations to a person with severe to profound nerve deafness by electrically stimulating nerves inside the inner ear.

Cochlear implants are designed to help severely to profoundly deaf adults and children who get little or no benefit from hearing aids.

Even individuals with severe or profound “Nerve deafness” may be able to benefit from cochlear implants.

A cochlear implant receives sound from the outside environment, processes it, and sends small electric currents near the auditory nerve.

The cochlear implant somewhat simulates natural hearing, where sound creates an electric current that stimulates the auditory nerve.

Most modern cochlear implants are versatile, in that they are somewhat capable of being adjusted to respond to sound in various ways.

Cochlear Implant Surgery

A cochlear implant is a small electronic device that electrically stimulates the cochlear nerve.

In cases of more moderate hearing loss, a partially inserted cochlear implant is used to preserve hearing so that both a hearing aid and the cochlear implant may be used simultaneously in the same ear.

Most individuals note a significant growth in their awareness of sounds within days after their cochlear implant is turned on, which is about four to six weeks after surgery.

A cochlear implant requires a period of training and therapy after surgery.

Cochlear implant surgery is a safe and well-tolerated procedure.

Cochlear implant surgery is done in a hospital or clinic.

Equally important to a good cochlear implant surgery is the care provided after surgery, as well as a long-term commitment from the patient and family to learn the new way of listening through a cochlear implant.

Cochlear Implant

This new type of cochlear implant incorporates all the current external components of an audio processor into the internal implant.

In the past, cochlear implants were only approved for people who were deaf in both ears; as of 2014 a cochlear implant had been used experimentally in some people who had acquired deafness in one ear after they had learned how to speak, and none who were deaf in one ear from birth; clinical studies as of 2014 had been too small to draw generalizations.

Reported rates of revision cochlear implant surgery vary in adults and children from 3.8% to 8% with the most common indications being device failure, infection, and migration of the implant or electrode.

A consensus statement from the European Bilateral Pediatric Cochlear Implant Forum also confirmed the importance of bilateral cochlear implantation in children.

In 2017, a study also reported that adults using a cochlear implant had significantly improved cognitive outcomes including working memory, reaction time, and cognitive flexibility compared to people who were waiting to receive a cochlear implant.

As of 2021, four cochlear implant devices approved for use in the United States are manufactured by Cochlear Limited, Advanced Bionics, MED-EL, and Oticon Medical.

Critics of cochlear implants from Deaf cultures also assert that the cochlear implant and the subsequent therapy often become the focus of the child’s identity at the expense of language acquisition and ease of communication in sign language and Deaf identity.

Cochlear Implant: Cost, Pros, Cons, Risks, How It Works

If you have severe hearing loss, you may benefit from a cochlear implant.

In this article, we’ll explore how the device works, what the procedure entails, the expected cost, as well as pros and cons of the implants.

A cochlear implant is a small electronic medical device that improves moderate to severe hearing loss.

Like most other medical devices, cochlear implants present pros and cons.

If you have severe hearing loss, a cochlear implant could improve your quality of life.

Without insurance, a cochlear implant can cost between $30,000 and $50,000 on average.

If hearing aids aren’t able to improve your hearing or speech, or you experience severe hearing loss that can’t be fixed through a standard hearing aid, you might be a good candidate for a cochlear implant.

With out-of-home one of the oldest and most enduring methods of advertising, it might seem a little strange that it’s becoming more valuable and important today.

Digital out-of-home media offers brighter colours, movement, and a lot more convenience.

Where replacing a physical media is a time-consuming, often labour-intensive process, digital out-of-home can load many different ads – or even multiple images for a single ad – onto a system at once.

Because data used in the out-of-home space is anonymized, digital out-of-home is being used as a friendlier, safer alternative for reaching target audiences with impressive, exciting visual ads.

Today, programmatic digital out-of-home, which automates ad transactions and delivery similar to most online advertising, is becoming more common.

What Is Out-Of-Home Advertising?

Out-of-home advertising, sometimes also called out-of-home marketing, refers to the process of reaching consumers while they are, you guessed it, out of their homes.

Emulsion Polymerization

Emulsion polymerization is a free-radical polymerization in which a monomer or mixture of monomers is polymerized in an aqueous surfactant solution to form a latex.

Emulsion and micro-emulsion polymerization differ in the kinetics of the polymerization.

Emulsion polymerization exhibits three reaction rate intervals, whereas only two are detected in micro-emulsion polymerization.

These advantages result mostly from the multiphase and compartmentalized nature of the emulsion polymerization which allows for production of polymers of high molecular weights at high polymerization rates at the same time, delivering a high versatility to product qualities.

The classical description of an emulsion polymerization considers the presence of monomer droplets, which serve as monomer reservoir up to intermediate stages of the polymerization.

In the following emulsion polymerizations are discussed with respect to gaining a deeper understanding of the iodine transfer polymerization.

In microsuspension polymerization, it is believed that polymerization occurs within ∼1 μm droplets to produce domains as for suspension polymerization.

Emulsion Polymerization

Emulsion polymerization is one of the most important methods for the polymerization of a large number of monomers, like vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, chloroprene, acrylamide, acrylates, and methacrylates.

Emulsion polymerization has several advantages over other polymerization techniques; for example, it is more rapid than bulk or solution polymerization at the same temperature, the conversion is essentially 100 percent, and the average molecular weight is usually higher than at the same polymerization rate in bulk or solution polymerization.

In general, an emulsion polymerization system consists of a dispersing medium, monomer, emulsifier, initiator and, if necessary, modifiers.

Stages of an Emulsion Polymerization Stage I. At the beginning, the mixture consists solely of the continuous water phase with dispersed surfactant micelles3 and emulsified monomer droplets of 1-10 microns.

During the first stage of the polymerization, monomers continuously migrate from the large monomer droplets through the water phase into the micelles and are added to the growing polymer chains.

Some polymerization takes also place in the water phase due to the solubility of the monomers and initiators, whereas the monomer droplets do not provide loci for polymerization because the negatively charged surfactant molecules that surround these droplets are virtually impossible to penetrate by the also negatively charged initiator molecules.

The diffusion of the free radicals into the monomer droplets is generally not important to the reaction rate during the growth stage and the rate of monomer diffusion is usually adequate to supply enough monomer to keep the reaction in the particles going.

Emulsion Polymerization

BASF uses its know-how to deliver high performance products, of consistent high quality, to customers in the emulsion polymerization industry.

Emulsion polymerization is a complex technology employed to produce a variety of polymer dispersions.

The dispersions then find application in adhesives, paints, textiles leather and paper.

BASF surfactants and additives used during the polymerization process are critical for problem-free manufacture; post-polymerization stabilization and can also positively influence the dispersion performance in application.

Emulsion Polymerization

Emulsion polymerization is a type of radical polymerization that usually starts with an emulsion incorporating water, monomer, and surfactant.

A dispersion resulting from emulsion polymerization is often called a latex or an emulsion.

The first “True” emulsion polymerizations, which used a surfactant and polymerization initiator, were conducted in the 1920s to polymerize isoprene.

Improved understanding of emulsion polymerization has relaxed that criterion to include more than one growing chain per particle the number of growing chains per particle is still considered to be very low.

Because of the complex chemistry that occurs during an emulsion polymerization, including polymerization kinetics and particle formation kinetics, quantitative understanding of the mechanism of emulsion polymerization has required extensive computer simulation.

Living polymerization processes that are carried out via emulsion polymerization such as iodine-transfer polymerization and RAFT have been developed.

The same rules and comonomer pairs that exist in radical polymerization operate in emulsion polymerization.

As the propagation takes place in the newly created particle, a thermodynamic potential difference is created for the diffusion of the monomer from the monomer droplets into the growing particles.

After sufficient number of particles are formed that are able to absorb all of the radicals in the water phase, no new particles are formed in the water phase and the number of particles becomes constant.

If quality control tests indicate that the particle number and particle size distribution of the seed particles will not result in the desired end-product specifications, the batch is normally terminated.

A growing radical can escape from a particle and return to the aqueous medium to participate in an aqueous phase termination reaction or enter into another particle.

During Stage II, monomer continuously diffuses from the monomer droplets into the particle phase, providing a steady monomer supply for the growing polymer particle.

The kinetics of absorption and desorption are described as follows: kap Absorptionby particles: R*j Ni Ni1 , Rap kapapCNi CR*j am Absorptionby micelles: R*j Nmi k Nmi1 , Ram kamamCNmi CR*j kde Desorption: Ni Ni1 R* , Rde kdeCNi Where: am = Area of a single micelle ap = Area of a single particle Nmi = Number of micelles with i radicals per cubic meter of aqueous phase Ni = Number of particles with i radicals per cubic meter of aqueous phase 2.5.

Important assumptions are made in the emulsion polymerization model: The reaction mixture is perfectly mixed Particles are formed by the micellar or the homogeneous mechanism No agglomeration or breakage of particles occurs No secondary nucleation occurs All particles have the same average number of radicals and hence the same volumetric growth rate The particle size distribution is unimodal, with moments of PSD sufficient to describe the PSD There are no mass transfer limitations on the polymerization reactions Molecular weight is controlled by chain transfer reactions 2.6.

Emulsion polymerization is a rather complex process because nucleation, growth and stabilization of polymer particles are controlled by the free radical polymerization mechanisms in combination with various colloidal phenomena.

Aside from other polymerization techniques, emulsion polymerization affords increasing molecular weight of the formed latexes through decreasing polymerization rate by either decreasing initiator concentration or lowering reaction temperature [5, 6].Systems of emulsion polymerization involve conventional emulsion polymerization, in which a hydrophobic monomer emulsified in water and polymerization initiated with a water-soluble initiator.

Inverse emulsion polymerization , where organic solvents of very low polarity as paraffin or xylene used as a polymerization media to emulsify hydrophilic monomers , then initiation proceed with the aid of hydrophobic initiator.

Due to their amphoteric structure and polymerization ability, they serve to synthesize inorganic/organic nanocomposite, and applied to emulsion polymerizations as polymerized emulsifiers, to stabilize the formed latexes, to prepare novel water-soluble hydrophobically associating polymers with strong thickening properties so, they greatly applied in the field of enhanced oil recovery.

Depending on monomer solubility in aqueous phase, there is three categories of typical emulsion polymerization monomers which comprise monomers of high solubility such as acrylonitrile, monomers of medium solubility as methyl methacrylate and monomers insoluble in aqueous phase such as butadiene and styrene.

Studied the surfactant-free emulsion polymerization of styrene initiated by KPS. Wang and Pan studied the surfactant-free emulsion polymerization of styrene with the water soluble co-monomer as 4-vinylpyridine.

Emulsion polymerization mechanismEmulsion polymerization is a free radical polymerization protocol occurs in three distinct steps; initiation, propagation, and termination.

David Bennett, publisher and owner of Boxer Books, will continue to lead the publisher as an imprint within Sterling.

It will now publish children’s books under its Union Square Kids and Boxer Books imprints.

The purchase of Boxer Books, dedicated to picture books for children under seven, includes more than 200 backlist titles and dozens of frontlist projects.

Union Square & Co currently distributes Boxer Books in the US and sales representation “Remains business as usual”, Sterling said.

Boxer Books is distributed in the UK by Bounce Marketing.

How Self-Publishing May Damage Your Business

While this has allowed for non-professional writers to emerge, it has also brought to light how easy and cheap publishing routes may be less effective than traditional ones, seeing publishing has a lasting effect on both the book and its author.

For authors who would rather spend time instead of money on their book cover, a number of things may happen: it might send out the wrong message or simply look cheap or unprofessional, it might even attract a less desired audience or ultimately discourage your target market by the simple fact that it looks self-published.

A book cover is your book’s chance to make a first impression, so why risk getting it wrong?

Considering all the effort that goes into finishing writing a book, it only makes sense for it to reach as a big an audience as possible, through different outlets, platforms and reputed book retailers such as Barnes & Noble, Chapters Indigo, Target, among others.

Any publication route is valid so long as it is truthful to the book and author’s brand, for how are you supposed to represent quality when your book doesn’t?

As both the founder and the owner of an award-winning publishing house with access to a variety of international distribution, as well as retail and wholesale channels, I believe that if publishing were as free and easy as self-publishing, there would be no publishing industry.

Self-publishing is rarely ever a successful enterprise because self-published books look self-published and that isn’t something any author would want.

Forms, Development, & Facts

History of publishing, an account of the selection, preparation, and marketing of printed matter from its origins in ancient times to the present.

A more detailed examination of printing technology can be found in printing.

Publishing could begin only after the monopoly of letters, often held by a priestly caste, had been broken, probably in connection with the development of the value of writing in commerce.

The invention of printing in Europe is usually attributed to Johannes Gutenberg in Germany about 1440-50, although block printing had been carried out from about 1400.

The mechanization of printing in the 19th century and its further development in the 20th, which went hand in hand with increasing literacy and rising standards of education, finally brought the printed word to its powerful position as a means of influencing minds and societies.

Most modern Western publishers purchase printing services in the open market, solicit manuscripts from authors, and distribute their wares to purchasers through shops, mail order, or direct sales.

For statistical purposes the United Nations Educational, Social and Cultural Organization defines a book as “a non-periodical printed publication of at least 49 pages excluding covers.”

Albert

Sky Sports News receives albert certification for carbon neutral status 02 Feb 2022.

AFPI. The AFPI is measuring the ecology of the Finnish film and TV industry using albert 18 Jan 2022.

Albert Sustainable Production Certification

Albert is an environmental organisation aiming to encourage the TV and film production industry to reduce waste and its carbon footprint.

Productions can then go through the certification process, where they implement sustainable production techniques to reduce carbon emissions where possible, and offsets where it is not.

Productions that successfully complete certification are awarded a 1, 2 or 3 star certificate and given use of the albert Sustainable Production logo on their credits.

Currently, all BBC, ITV, Channel 4, UKTV, Sky and Netflix productions in the UK are required to register their carbon footprint using the albert carbon calculator.

Albert started the Creative Energy project in 2017, which enables production companies to switch to a 100% renewable energy supplier.

Creative offsets is another upcoming albert scheme which allows productions to offset/mitigate their environmental impact with carbon offsetting schemes.

In September 2020, albert launched the ‘Screen New Deal’ report in association with the British Film Institute and Arup as a route-map to help film production transition to net zero emissions by 2050.

RTÉ’S Cláracha Gaeilge Awarded Albert Sustainable Production Certification – About RTÉ

RTÉ’s Cláracha Gaeilge has been awarded certification from Albert for Sustainable Production and minimising its carbon footprint.

Albert certification was awarded to Cláracha Gaeilge for all five programmes in the new series, Gafa , the first RTÉ programmes to receive this certification.

The team are also seeking certification for the upcoming series of Scannal.

The Albert Carbon Calculator is specifically designed for programme making and is a widely recognised tool which is used by other broadcasters throughout the UK and around the world.

The Albert certification follows online training sessions organised by RTÉ for our producers and directors and all support personnel on how to use the Albert Carbon Calculator to reduce the carbon footprint of RTÉ productions in line with RTÉ’s commitments.

Assistant Producer, Sonia Patterson, explains that following the training the team started closely scrutinising their production to “Improve our practices to lessen the environmental impact our of work. What we learned was that environmental savings often equate to financial savings. So as an extra bonus we managed to make some savings in our budget. The key really is to just take everything one step at a time.”

Commenting on this achievement by Cláracha Gaeilge, Programme Department Assistant, Maria Schaler added, “I think the whole team is quite proud to have been awarded certification for the series. While the process took a bit of time, work, and thinking it was so worthwhile because in the end, not only did we reduce the carbon – and financial – cost of our programmes, but we have also been recognised for this effort by Albert. We are delighted to include the Albert Sustainable Production stamp on our programme end boards and we hope that it will inspire other production teams to work towards earning certification as well.”

Sky Sports News Receives Albert Certification For Carbon Neutral Status

Sky Sports News has been recognised as a carbon neutral sustainable production by albert, the organisation leading the UK TV and film industry in the charge against climate change.

The wider achievement marks Sky Sports News’ efforts to reduce its environmental impact, with the channel now hitting the highest standards of sustainability set by albert.

Sky Sports UK Host Broadcasts, Sky Original productions and Sky News have also earned albert’s carbon neutral certification.

“Sky Sports managing director Jonathan Licht said:”We’re delighted that Sky Sports News is now a carbon neutral channel and has received certification from albert.

Sky Sports has made significant progress to support Sky’s overall ambition to be net zero carbon by 2030.

As well as adopting advanced approaches to greener production, Sky Sports has engaged with viewers to inform them on how they can make small changes to reduce their own carbon footprint.

Sky Sports News achieved albert certification by using 100% renewable energy in the studio and galleries, turning off equipment when not in use, reducing employee travel and using electric taxis when available, crewing local operators for shoots, and offsetting the remaining carbon with certified carbon offsets.

Sustainable Production Requirements

Familiarity with the information required early in the production process ensures that the right data is collected during the course of production.

Collecting the required information throughout the production process will make it significantly easier to fill in the final form and have it ready to submit to albert in good time to receive the albert logo for end credits.

By nominating an ‘albert expert’ within a production company this person can also develop the knowledge to guide successive productions on how to upload evidence of their sustainable actions.

Albert will respond with a request for evidence, which the production team needs to gather and upload online during the production process.

When the final footprint is completed at the end of the production the accurate offset cost can be calculated, recorded in the production budget and paid.

Watch recordings from the BBC Climate Creatives festival for a wealth of information on sustainable production and inspiration for how sustainability can be incorporated into editorial along with further resources on the BBC Academy website.

Best practice guidance, recommendations, case studies and useful tips for making productions sustainable can be found on the albert website, along with information about how to document and evidence the sustainability within a production and how to complete the albert carbon footprint calculator.

How Film Production Is Becoming More Sustainable And Profitable

Computer Numerical Control

System consists of three basic components: CNC software that is a program of instructions, a machine control unit, and processing equipment, also called machine tool.

The machine tool interface software is used to operate the communication link between the Central Processing Unit and the machine tool axes to accomplish the control functions.

In today’s CNC technology, the machine control unit consists of some kinds of computers with related control hardware that store and sequentially execute the program of instructions by converting each command into mechanical actions of the processing equipment.

A MCU generally consists of the following components or subsystems: CPU; memory; I/O interfaces; controls of machine tool axes and spindle speed; sequence control for other machine tool functions.

The subsystem of machine tool controls is hardware components that control the position and velocity of each machine axis as well as the rotational speed of the machine tool spindle.

The control signals generated by MCU must be converted to a form and power level suited to the particular position control systems used to drive the machine axes.

Advanced PC-based control systems have achieved nanometer or even subnanometer levels of control resolution for ultraprecision and micro-manufacturing purposes, such systems also being used commonly in the majority of commercially available ultraprecision machines.

What Is Computer Numerical Control? Definition From SearchERP

Computer numerical control is a method for automating control of machine tools through the use of software embedded in a microcomputer attached to the tool.

It is commonly used in manufacturing for machining metal and plastic parts.

With CNC, each object to be manufactured gets a custom computer program, usually written in an international standard language called G-code, stored in and executed by the machine control unit, a microcomputer attached to the machine.

The program contains the instructions and parameters the machine tool will follow, such as the feed rate of materials and the positioning and speed of the tool’s components.

Mills, lathes, routers, grinders and lasers are common machine tools whose operations can be automated with CNC. It can also be used to control non-machine tools, such as welding, electronic assembly and filament-winding machines.

CNC is considered to provide more precision, complexity and repeatability than is possible with manual machining.

What Is Computer Numerical Control?

Computer Numerical Control retains the fundamental concepts of NC but utilizes a dedicated stored-program computer within the machine control unit.

CNC is mostly the result of technological progress in microelectronics, rather than any radical departure in the concept of CNC. CNC attempts to accomplish as many of the MCU functions as possible within the computer software which is programmed into the electronic control unit.

The chief operating program is stored within the CNC control unit a first memory chip.

CNC control units, like the computers on which they are based, operate according to a stored program held in computer memory.

Programs can, of course, still be loaded into the CNC machine via punched tape, but only one pass is necessary to read the complete part program into the memory of the control unit.

Stored Programs Part programs may be stored in the memory of the device.

Often, more than one program may be resident in the control unit memory at one time with the ability to switch between them.

Article About Computer Numerical Control By The Free Dictionary

A control system in which numerical values corresponding to desired tool or control positions are generated by a computer.

Abbreviated CNC. Also known as computational numerical control; soft-wired numerical control; stored-program numerical control.

Machine movements that are controlled by cams, gears, levers, or screws in conventional machines are directed by computers and digital circuitry in computer numerical control machines.

Computer numerical control provides very flexible and versatile control over machine tools.

With computer numerical control these parameters are set once, and then they are repeated precisely for each subsequent machine cycle.

In computer-aided manufacturing, computers are used to assist in programming CNC machines.

Computer numerical control machines are used mainly when flexibility is required or variable and complex part geometries must be created.

Agribusiness Definition

Agribusiness is the business sector encompassing farming and farming-related commercial activities.

Agribusiness treats the different aspects of raising agricultural products as an integrated system.

Market forces have a significant impact on the agribusiness sector, as do natural forces, such as changes in the earth’s climate.

Climate change has placed intensifying pressure on many companies in the agribusiness industry to remain relevant, and profitable, while adapting to the threats posed by large-scale shifts in weather patterns.

Agribusiness Challenges Countries with farming industries face consistent pressures from global competition.

Use of New Technology The use of new technology is vital to remain competitive in the global agribusiness sector.

Because agribusiness is a broad industry, it incorporates a wide range of different companies and operations.

Overview, Components, Importance

One of the largest agricultural machinery companies is John Deere, which specializes in providing farming and gardening equipment.

Agribusiness is a sector that supports the growth of the agricultural industry, which is pivotal to GDP Formula.

Agribusinesses can potentially improve agricultural productivity, which is why governments often offer subsidies to agricultural businesses.

Ultimately, the aim of innovation in agribusiness is to improve agricultural productivity and make agricultural activities easier for farmers.

In the United States, agribusinesses are referred to as large agricultural corporations that are Vertical Integration.

Participate in many activities in the agricultural value chain.

Such companies tend to employ their own production, processing, and sales units, as opposed to organic farms that are small and focused on crop production and use products from other agribusinesses.

Agribusiness

An agricultural supply store or agrocenter is an agriculturally-oriented shop where one sells agricultural supplies-inputs required for agricultural production such as pesticides, feed and fertilizers.

Small farms with a land area of less than 2 hectares operate about 1% of the world’s agricultural land, and family farms comprise about 75% of the world’s agricultural land.

Agricultural engineering, also known as agricultural and biosystems engineering, is the field of study and application of engineering science and designs principles for agriculture purposes, combining the various disciplines of mechanical, civil, electrical, food science, environmental, software, and chemical engineering to improve the efficiency of farms and agribusiness enterprises as well as to ensure sustainability of natural and renewable resources.

Agricultural engineers make the engineering designs and plans in an agricultural project, usually in partnership with an agriculturist who is more proficient in farming and agricultural science.

A broad typology of agricultural cooperatives distinguishes between agricultural service cooperatives, which provide various services to their individually-farming members, and agricultural production cooperatives in which production resources are pooled and members farm jointly.

The primary role of agriculturists are in leading agricultural projects and programs, usually in agribusiness planning or research for the benefit of farms, food, and agribusiness related organizations.

Studies of agribusiness often come from the academic fields of agricultural economics and management studies, sometimes called agribusiness management.

Agribusiness Definition & Meaning

In recent years some industry players have followed up on pledges to improve the lives of Mexican laborers, according to produce distributors, labor organizers, agribusiness executives, watchdog groups and industry analysts.

Richard Marosi, Los Angeles Times, 31 Dec. 2021 For years, agribusiness in the Central Valley drained aquifers with deep, expensive wells, while smaller farmers and agricultural communities watched their wells go dry.

Jared Olson, The New Republic, 2 Dec. 2021 Farmers and agribusiness furnish the USDA with political capital and the USDA guarantees stable prices for commodity monocrops with minimal regulation.

Gabriel N. Rosenberg, The New Republic, 27 Dec. 2021 The grassroots sustainability momentum in the U.S. is consistent with recent scientific studies that expose the yield/productivity myth of chemical intensive agribusiness.

Errol Schweizer, Forbes, 3 Nov. 2021 The changes were met with criticism from predictable corners such as major agribusiness interests and farm state politicians, including Democrats Jon Tester and Al Franken.

Gabriel N. Rosenberg, The New Republic, 27 Dec. 2021 For expansion, agribusiness is eyeing markets in lower-income countries and looking at smallholder crops, such as eggplant, millet and cassava.

Lindsey Mcginnis, The Christian Science Monitor, 17 Dec. 2021 These example sentences are selected automatically from various online news sources to reflect current usage of the word ‘agribusiness.

What Is Agribusiness?

Agribusiness relates to industries that are engaged in farming or that produce farm inputs.

Examples of agribusiness include farm machinery manufacturing, seed supply, and agrichemicals.

Take Deere & Company, which makes John Deere equipment and may be one of the best-known examples of a classic agribusiness company.

Bayer, which acquired The Monsanto Company in 2018 and manufactures the herbicide Roundup and various Roundup Ready genetically modified seeds, is another example of a company that engages in agribusiness.

Another agribusiness company, Corteva Agriscience, an independent company that was previously a wholly owned subsidiary of Dow AgroSciences LLC, makes pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides, in addition to marketing seeds.

The term agribusiness generally isn’t used to refer to individual farms, although Smithfield Foods Inc., the largest U.S. producer of pork, owns and runs its farms.

Small organic farms often use agribusiness products like John Deere tractors.

Post Idea #35: Intra-aortic balloon pump

Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump

Demonstrated a 30% increase in aortic distensibility with IABP, thereby reducing the aortic stiffness constant, resulting in a 24% increase in cardiac index and a 31% reduction in myocardial oxygen demand.

A possible mechanism contributing to augmented coronary blood flow with IABP use is the result of an increased diastolic aortic pressure with pulsatile balloon inflation during the diastolic phase and endothelial-derived nitric oxide release from vascular stretch results in diastolic arteriolar vasodilation.

Registries comparing left-side heart pump systems with IABP in post-resuscitation shock patients described no difference in survival rate between left-side heart pump systems treated and IABP treated patients, i.e., 23.0% vs. 29.5%, respectively, p =0.61; however, a higher bleeding complication rate of 26% was observed in the left-side heart pump systems treatment group as compared to 9% in IABP treated patients, p=0.06.

Subsequent randomized clinical trials did not demonstrate any difference in the in-hospital mortality, major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events between the patients undergoing high-risk PCI with or without the support of IABP. The randomized controlled clinical trial of Balloon Pump-Assisted Coronary Intervention Study evaluated the elective use of IABP during high risk percutaneous coronary intervention in patients with severe coronary artery disease having compromised left ventricular function.

The improved 90 days of survival in the left-side heart pump systems group was attributed to better hemodynamic support offered by left-side heart pump systems compared to IABP during the high-risk PCI. Based on the evidence available, IABP use is not routinely recommended in hemodynamically stable patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction and extensive coronary artery disease undergoing high-risk PCI unless the patient is hemodynamically unstable or deemed to be at high risk of becoming unstable during the PCI. Also, if feasible, the hemodynamic support with a left-side heart pump system provides a better clinical outcome than IABP in high-risk patients undergoing PCI as suggested by PROTECT II clinical trial.

The efficacy of IABP is dependent on the timing of balloon inflation and deflation relative to the cardiac cycle; therefore, controlling the timing of interbeat IABP inflation during both regular rhythm and arrhythmias by application of Real-time dicrotic notch detection algorithm ensures the efficacy of IABP in either condition.

Evaluated the outcome of perioperative intra-aortic balloon pump use in high-risk cardiac surgery patients and demonstrated no mortality benefit in the IABP group.

Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump Therapy

You may need it if your heart is unable to pump enough blood for your body.

Your healthcare provider will insert the balloon pump catheter into an artery in your leg.

In some cases, you might not be able to use an IABP, even if your heart can’t pump enough blood.

What happens during intra-aortic balloon pump therapy?

IABP therapy involves inserting the balloon-tipped catheter into a blood vessel and advancing it to the heart.

What happens after intra-aortic balloon pump therapy?

If your heart continues to pump well on its own, you may be ready to stop the IABP therapy.

Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump

An intra-aortic balloon pump is a mechanical device that helps the heart pump blood.

If you are hospitalized, your doctor may insert an IABP. Your doctor will numb an area of your leg and thread the IABP through the femoral artery in your leg into your aorta.

The IABP reduces the workload on your heart, allowing your heart to pump more blood.

The IABP is placed inside your aorta, the artery that takes blood from the heart to the rest of the body.

The balloon on the end of the catheter inflates and deflates with the rhythm of your heart.

As your left ventricle is about to pump out blood, the balloon deflates.

In rare cases, the balloon may overinflate and tear the aorta.

Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump

Various mechanical circulatory devices have been developed to mitigate the adverse outcomes of cardiogenic shock until treating the underlying cause.

To date, four types of mechanical circulatory support devices exist that include Intra-aortic balloon pump, non-IABP ventricular circulatory assist devices, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation devices, and non-percutaneous ventricular assist devices.

Intra-aortic balloon pump is the simplest, cost-effective, easy to implant and explant in the coronary catheterization laboratory by an interventional cardiologist and can effectively be managed in an intensive care unit by an intensivist.

Although IABP has a modest hemodynamic beneficial effect compared with novel, advanced mechanical circulatory support devices, it has a better safety profile, relative simplicity to use, and the beneficial cardiovascular physiological impact.

These features make IABP a frequently used circulatory support device in patients requiring hemodynamic support either in cardiogenic shock or at risk of hemodynamic decompensation during a high-risk coronary intervention.

Currently available evidence related to the use of IABP is in constant flux.

It is important to review the safety and efficacy of IABP in various clinical conditions and appraise the health care providers of current evidence-based literature related to IABP. This article reviews the physiological and hemodynamic effects of IABP on the cardiovascular system as well as the safety and efficacy of its use in various cardiovascular clinical conditions.

Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump

The IABP consists of a balloon catheter and a pump console to control the timing of balloon inflation and deflation.

Optimal hemodynamic effect from the IABP depends on several factors, including the balloon’s position in the aorta, the blood displacement volume, the balloon diameter in relation to aortic diameter, the timing of balloon inflation in diastole and deflation in systole, and the patient’s own heart rate, blood pressure, and vascular resistance.

The IABP consists of a balloon catheter and a pump console to control the balloon.

The balloon inflates with the onset of diastole, which roughly corresponds with electrophysiologic repolarization or the middle of the T-wave on the surface ECG. Following diastole, the balloon rapidly deflates at the onset of left ventricular systole, which is timed to the peak of the R-wave on the surface ECG. The IABP increases diastolic blood pressure, decreases afterload, decreases myocardial oxygen consumption, increases coronary artery perfusion, and modestly enhances cardiac output.

Optimal hemodynamic effect from the IABP is dependent on several factors, including the balloon’s position in the aorta, blood displacement volume, balloon diameter in relation to aortic diameter, timing of balloon inflation in diastole and deflation in systole, and the patient’s own heart rate, blood pressure, and vascular resistance.

Intra-Aortic Balloon PumpThe IABP, developed as 15-French in the 1960s, is a polyethylene balloon mounted on the end of a flexible 7-9-French catheter.

Direct aortic injury can be disastrous particularly if acute intervention is necessary and the patient is unable to tolerate removal of the IABP. If the patient is stable, balloon removal can be undertaken and the aorta treated as indicated.

Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump Overview LITFL CCC Equipment

OVERVIEW. Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump or intra-aortic counterpulsation device.

Helium is used to inflate the balloon as its low density means there is little turbulent flow so the balloon can inflate fast and deflate slowly.

Balloon should never be turned off in situ except when the patient is anticoagulated because of the risk of thrombus formation on the balloon.

Ranucci et al found that in patients undergoing nonemergent coronary operations, with a stable hemodynamic profile and a left ventricular ejection fraction <35%, the pre-incision insertion of intra-aortic balloon pump does not result in a better outcome.

Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump: Purpose, Procedure, Risks, And Recovery

An intra-aortic balloon pump, or IABP, is a long, skinny balloon that controls the flow of blood through your largest blood vessel, the aorta.

The device gets smaller when your heart pumps so blood can flow out to the rest of your body.

Your doctor may recommend an IABP if your heart isn’t getting enough blood or isn’t sending enough out to the rest of your body.

Your doctor will put the catheter and balloon into an artery in one of your legs and use an X-ray camera to move it up to your aorta.

The device is hooked up to a machine that tells the balloon when to get bigger and when to get smaller.

If you’re already in surgery, like during a bypass, your doctor will put the device in while you’re asleep.

If not, your doctor will give you medicine to help you relax, then they’ll use another medication to numb the part of your leg where they’ll put the catheter in.

Post Idea #36: Liquid crystal

What Are Liquid Crystals?

The well-known three states of matter are solid, liquid and gas.

Frequent collisions between molecules make the liquid more viscous, yet it can still flow like “Liquid.” As the liquid is further cooled, say at the freezing point of water 0℃, it is transformed to a solid, which is rigid; water freezes to become ice at 0℃. Until two scientists in Europe, Friedrich Reinitzer and Otto Lehmann, discovered liquid crystals in the late 19th century, these three were the only states of matter that humans have ever known.

Liquid crystal is the fourth state of matter that occurs between solid and liquid.

While studying the function of cholesterol in plants, Friedrich Reinitzer, an Austrian botanist, found an unusual melting that was always accompanied by the presence of cloudy liquid state before the clear liquid appears.

Through his careful observations of the melting of the substance using his state-of-the-art microscope with a gas heating stage, Lehmann was convinced that the cloudy state is truly a new state of matter that differs from solid, liquid and gas.

The year 1888, in which Reinitzer found this double melting phenomenon, is officially recognized as the year of discovery of liquid crystals.

To demonstrate the phase change from the liquid crystal state to the ordinary liquid, the glass vial is inserted in hot water.

Liquid Crystal

Blue phases are liquid crystal phases that appear in the temperature range between a chiral nematic phase and an isotropic liquid phase.

As the isotropic phase would not significantly affect the polarization of the light, it would appear very dark, whereas the crystal and liquid crystal phases will both polarize the light in a uniform way, leading to brightness and color gradients.

Liquid crystals find wide use in liquid crystal displays, which rely on the optical properties of certain liquid crystalline substances in the presence or absence of an electric field.

Liquid crystal lenses converge or diverge the incident light by adjusting the refractive index of liquid crystal layer with applied voltage or temperature.

To converge a plane wave into a diffraction limited spot, for a physically-planar liquid crystal structure, the refractive index of liquid crystal layer should be spherical or paraboloidal under paraxial approximation.

Liquid crystal lenses with electrically tunable refractive index have potentials to achieve arbitrary function of optical path length for modulating incoming wavefront; current liquid crystal freeform optical elements were extended from liquid crystal lens with same optical mechanisms.

Liquid crystal lasers use a liquid crystal in the lasing medium as a distributed feedback mechanism instead of external mirrors.

ScienceDirect Topics

LC phases are formed by materials made of anisotropic molecules or other entities, such as aggregates of molecules in surfactant solutions known as micelles.

The key parameters specifying the liquid-crystalline order are the director, that is, the unit vector representing spatial orientation of the molecule, and the center position of each molecule.

“Active” nanoparticles enhance interactions between mesogenic molecules causing the increase of the liquid crystals order parameter.

In the nematic state, the molecules are arranged parallel to each other in an arbitrary direction, with a casual distribution of the centers of mass of the molecules.

For increasing values of the magnitude of the electric field E. If E>Eth, the molecules begin to align along the field direction; when E≫Eth, the majority of the molecules are aligned perpendicularly to the interface.

For EEth the molecules begin to align along the field direction; for E≫Eth the molecules are almost completely aligned in the direction of the electric field and the LC cell shows essentially homeotropic ordering.

The type of bonding between the dye and the liquid crystal molecules tends to align the former parallel to the director and to follow its orientation.

The characteristic orientational order of the liquid crystal state is between the traditional solid and liquid phases and this is the origin of the term mesogenic state, used synonymously with liquid crystal state.

Liquid Crystal Phases The liquid crystal state is a distinct phase of matter observed between the crystalline and isotropic states.

Photo of the smectic A phase Photo of the smectic C phase Chemical Properties of Liquid Crystals Liquid crystals can be classified into two main categories: thermotropic liquid crystals, and lyotropic liquid crystals.

Thermotropic liquid crystals can be classified into two types: enantiotropic liquid crystals, which can be changed into the liquid crystal state from either lowering the temperature of a liquid or raising of the temperature of a solid, and monotropic liquid crystals, which can only be changed into the liquid crystal state from either an increase in the temperature of a solid or a decrease in the temperature of a liquid, but not both.

Applications of Liquid Crystals Liquid crystal technology has had a major effect many areas of science and engineering, as well as device technology.

Liquid Crystal Displays The most common application of liquid crystal technology is liquid crystal displays This field has grown into a multi-billion dollar industry, and many significant scientific and engineering discoveries have been made.

Liquid Crystal Thermometers As demonstrated earlier, chiral nematic liquid crystals reflect light with a wavelength equal to the pitch.

Liquid Crystal

Liquid crystals share with liquids the ability to flow but also display symmetries inherited from crystalline solids.

Symmetries of liquid crystals Liquid crystals, sometimes called mesophases, occupy the middle ground between crystalline solids and ordinary liquids with regard to symmetry, energy, and properties.

Typical liquid crystal structures include the smectic shown in Figure 1B and the nematic in Figure 1C. The smectic phase differs from the solid phase in that translational symmetry is discrete in one direction-the vertical in Figure 1B-and continuous in the remaining two.

As a substance in the liquid state is reduced in temperature, rotational symmetry breaking creates the nematic liquid crystal state in which molecules are aligned along a common axis.

When continuous translational symmetry is broken along only one direction, the smectic liquid crystal is obtained.

Many interesting liquid crystal phases are not listed in this table, including the discotic phase, consisting of disk-shaped molecules, and the columnar phases, in which translational symmetry is broken in not one but two spatial directions, leaving liquidlike order only along columns.

How To Make A ‘Computer’ Out Of Liquid Crystals: Breakthrough Could Pave The Way For Applications In Robotics, Computing Using Soft Materials

Researchers with the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering have shown for the first time how to design the basic elements needed for logic operations using a kind of material called a liquid crystal – paving the way for a completely novel way of performing computations.

The molecules in a liquid crystal tend to be elongated, and when packed together they adopt a structure that has some order, like the straight rows of atoms in a diamond crystal – but instead of being stuck in place as in a solid, this structure can also shift around as a liquid does.

One consequence of this odd molecular order is that there are spots in all liquid crystals where the ordered regions bump up against each other and their orientations don’t quite match, creating what scientists call “Topological defects.” These spots move around as the liquid crystal moves.

In a new paper, they took it a logical step further and determined that it should be theoretically possible to use these techniques to make a liquid crystal perform operations like a computer.

Researchers are interested in soft robots – robots with bodies that aren’t made out of hard metal or plastic, but rather stretchy and soft materials – because their flexibility and gentle touch means they can perform functions that hard-bodied robots cannot.

The team can imagine creating such robots that can do some of their own “Thinking” using active liquid crystals.

They can also imagine using topological defects to ferry small amounts of liquid or other materials from place to place inside tiny devices.

Medical Device

A medical device is any device intended to be used for medical purposes.

Significant potential for hazards are inherent when using a device for medical purposes and thus medical devices must be proved safe and effective with reasonable assurance before regulating governments allow marketing of the device in their country.

Later in 1976, the Medical Device Amendments to the FD&C Act established medical device regulation and oversight as we know it today in the United States.

Medical device regulation in Europe as we know it today came into effect in the 1993 by what is collectively known as the Medical Device Directive.

“The term covers a wide range of health or medical instruments used in the treatment, mitigation, diagnosis or prevention of a disease or abnormal physical condition. Health Canada reviews medical devices to assess their safety, effectiveness, and quality before authorizing their sale in Canada. According to the Act, medical device does not include any device that is intended for use in relation to animals.”

In January 2021, the FDA published a proposed regulatory framework for AI/ML-based software, and the EU medical device regulation which replaces the EU Medical Device Directive in May 2021, defines regulatory requirements for medical devices, including AI/ML software.

The identification of medical devices has been recently improved by the introduction of Unique Device Identification and standardised naming using the Global Medical Device Nomenclature which have been endorsed by the International Medical Device Regulatory Forum.

IoT enables your organization to analyze and act on data, allowing you to make smart decisions in real-time.

With the timely and relevant insights about your business and customers that come with these new sources of data, there’s great potential for industries of all kinds-including manufacturing, transportation, energy, agriculture, retail, and government-to operate more efficiently and provide new value to customers by implementing the right IoT solution.

In short, IoT lets you solve your business problems using your own data.

With IoT, it’s possible to learn from your own systems find new ways to manage your processes and product quality with data from your devices and sensors.

Accelerate your business transformation with IoT. Reduce complexity, lower costs, and speed up your time to market with fully managed IoT services.

On a basic level, IoT is used for collecting data about the physical world that would be very difficult or impossible for humans to collect without the aid of smart devices and monitoring systems.

Internet Of Things

Defining the Internet of things as “Simply the point in time when more ‘things or objects’ were connected to the Internet than people”, Cisco Systems estimated that the IoT was “Born” between 2008 and 2009, with the things/people ratio growing from 0.08 in 2003 to 1.84 in 2010.

Building on the Internet of things, the web of things is an architecture for the application layer of the Internet of things looking at the convergence of data from IoT devices into Web applications to create innovative use-cases.

Social Internet of things is a new kind of IoT that focuses the importance of social interaction and relationship between IoT devices.

It is important to the IIoT subset of the IoT. O-DF Open Data Format O-DF is a standard published by the Internet of Things Work Group of The Open Group in 2014, which specifies a generic information model structure that is meant to be applicable for describing any “Thing”, as well as for publishing, updating and querying information when used together with O-MI. O-MI Open Messaging Interface O-MI is a standard published by the Internet of Things Work Group of The Open Group in 2014, which specifies a limited set of key operations needed in IoT systems, notably different kinds of subscription mechanisms based on the Observer pattern.

To provide an impetus to the IoT ecosystem, in March 2016, a bipartisan group of four Senators proposed a bill, The Developing Innovation and Growing the Internet of Things Act, to direct the Federal Communications Commission to assess the need for more spectrum to connect IoT devices.

According to Lonergan, the term IoT was coined before smart phones, tablets, and devices as we know them today existed, and there is a long list of terms with varying degrees of overlap and technological convergence: Internet of things, Internet of everything, Internet of goods, industrial Internet, pervasive computing, pervasive sensing, ubiquitous computing, cyber-physical systems, wireless sensor networks, smart objects, digital twin, cyberobjects or avatars, cooperating objects, machine to machine, ambient intelligence, Operational technology, and information technology.

A study issued by Ericsson regarding the adoption of Internet of things among Danish companies identified a “Clash between IoT and companies’ traditional governance structures, as IoT still presents both uncertainties and a lack of historical precedence.” Among the respondents interviewed, 60 percent stated that they “Do not believe they have the organizational capabilities, and three of four do not believe they have the processes needed, to capture the IoT opportunity.” This has led to a need to understand organizational culture in order to facilitate organizational design processes and to test new innovation management practices.

What Is The Internet Of Things, And How Does It Work?

There’s a lot of noise at the moment about the Internet of Things and its impact on everything from the way we travel and do our shopping to the way manufacturers keep track of inventory.

What is the Internet of Things? How does it work? And is it really that important?

In a nutshell, the Internet of Things is the concept of connecting any device to the Internet and to other connected devices.

The IoT is a giant network of connected things and people – all of which collect and share data about the way they are used and about the environment around them.

There are even connected footballs that can track how far and fast they are thrown and record those statistics via an app for future training purposes.

Devices and objects with built in sensors are connected to an Internet of Things platform, which integrates data from the different devices and applies analytics to share the most valuable information with applications built to address specific needs.

We’ve got lots of examples that show the Internet of Things in action.

Get Ready For Security In The Age Of The Extended Internet Of Things, Says Claroty

Get ready for security in the age of the Extended Internet of Things, says Claroty.

Operational technology company Claroty makes a big claim about the future of OT and industrial control systems security: Based on data collected over the past few years, the distinction between OT/ICS and the rest of enterprise tech is beginning to fade in earnest, and new security headaches have appeared in their place.

Claroty states is case in its ICS Risk and Vulnerability report for the second half of 2021, which found among other things that there has been a 110% year-over-year increase in the number of ICS vulnerabilities disclosed since 2018, and that non-OT products made up 34% of ICS vulnerabilities reported in 2021.

“As more cyber-physical systems become connected, accessibility to these networks from the internet and the cloud requires defenders to have timely, useful vulnerability information to inform risk decisions,” said Amir Preminger, vice president of research at Claroty.

The name that Claroty gives to its vision of a world devoid of distinctions between operational tech, informational tech and internet of things devices is the “Extended internet of things.” It describes the XIoT as “An umbrella term that captures the cyber-physical systems critical to our lives not only for security management, but for data analysis, performance tracking and enhancement, and much more.”

If Claroty is correct in assumptions about the future of tech being an XIoT one, and those statistics presented above are correct, we’re looking at a coming apocalypse of vulnerable devices being exposed to the internet.

Why Cybersecurity On The Internet Of Things?

Internet use in more and more processes and tasks in administration and companies, but also in the private sphere, means that we are highly dependent on functioning information technology and secure information infrastructures.

The importance of IT and cyber security is constantly increasing due to the digitalization of all areas of life, work and business on the Internet of Things, the real world is merging with the digital world.

Due to the framework of limited resources in cyber-physical systems on the Internet of Things or sensor networks, traditional security mechanisms, and techniques, such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, or even anti-virus software, cannot be applied.

The constraints imposed by limited resources usually have a direct impact on the IT security of these systems.

The Internet of Things will have an estimated 50 billion end devices integrated in our everyday lives by 2020.

In general, the challenge is to enable end-to-end data confidentiality, integrity and authenticity in data communication on the Internet of Things.
