NHRA Releases Initial Findings In Kalitta Crash

While still conducting its investigation into the details of last week’s tragic accident that took the life of driver Scott Kalitta, NHRA announced today some of its initial findings and subsequent steps being taken to continue its efforts to make the sport safer.

The New Jersey State Police investigation team was on site the same day, working with NHRA officials as both conducted their investigation.

McCandless worked with NHRA officials, members of the Kalitta race team, and officers from the New Jersey State Police accident investigation team on site.

After its preliminary investigation, NHRA identified several areas to analyze and determine whether changes should be made to build upon the sport’s long standing safety record, given the inherent risks and ever-present dangers associated with race cars traveling a quarter mile at more than 300 mph.

NHRA, working with the Kalitta race team, has examined the engine, and will work with the Kalitta team and other teams to analyze what might be done to reduce such incidents in the future.

NHRA will analyze additional methods that might be developed at the top end of the race track to help arrest runaway vehicles, given the speed, mass and other factors synonymous with NHRA drag racing.

Drag Racing Champion Dies In Crash

ARDMORE, Okla. – A new race car went airborne in ‘awfully windy’ conditions and crashed, ripping Lee Shepherd from his harness and killing the five-time national drag racing champion, authorities said today.

Ch Kinslow said Shepherd, 40, of Arlington, Texas, was testing a new car Monday when the accident occurred.

The driver had leased the Ardmore Raceway, an old airport that has been converted to a dragstrip, for the day to practice for next week’s Gatornationals drag racing event in Gainesville, Fla.

The car had just finished a practice run and Shepherd had deployed his parachute to slow the vehicle, when it went out of control, Kinslow said.

‘The front end of the car came off the ground,’ he said.

Dale Hamm, of Amarillo, Texas, south central region director of the National Hot Rod Association, said: ‘His car had made a full pass, but it went airborne through the traps.

Of course, the main concerns are to find out why the seatbelts gave way and why he was thrown out of the car.

This video on YouTube caught our eye not only for the cool 1960’s drag racing footage, but for its title, “Back When Racing was Fun.” The video is a five minute promotional clip of a longer video from “Bee on Video.” It’s a compilation of footage taken from various drag strips from days gone by, and for those of us who can’t get enough old school drag racing footage, this video provides a fun history lesson.

As for the title, it begs the question: was drag racing actually more fun in the ’60s? I know for me any time I can fire up my race car and roll to the burnout box, my fun meter is piqued.

In fairness to the creator of the video, he wasn’t trying to imply that the act of drag racing has lost its fun.

Manual-Transmission Dodge Challenger Hellcats Currently On Pause

The manual-transmission Dodge Challenger Hellcat is quite the experience, and it’s one that probably won’t exist for too many more years.

Between now and the time Dodge rolls out its electric muscle-car successors, that three-pedal goodness is still available – or, at least, it was.

Road and Track noticed that the online configurator for the 2022 Dodge Challenger did not allow customers to select a manual transmission for the Challenger Hellcat variant, and pointed out that online Challenger forums observed the omission a while back.

A Dodge spokesperson confirmed to R&T that the manual option left the configurator in late 2021 as part of a “Temporary situation” while Dodge revises its powertrain calibration.

Dodge did not give R&T an answer to that query, and automaker representatives did not immediately return Roadshow’s request for comment.

The Challenger is currently the only Dodge vehicle that can be paired with a manual transmission.

At some point in 2022, Dodge will show off its first electric muscle-car concept, which will preview a new generation of Dodge vehicles promising pavement-twisting good times with electricity powering the whole affair.

Dodge Challenger Hellcat Manual Transmission Option Disappeared In 2021

Dodge deleted the manual transmission option for the Challenger SRT Hellcat sometime during 2021, Road & Track reported Tuesday.

Production of manual Challenger Hellcat models was suspended in November 2021, according to Road & Track.

It’s not currently possible to configure a 2022 Challenger Hellcat manual, but that option will return at an unspecified date.

For now, you can still get a 6-speed manual in Challenger R/T models with the 5.7-liter V-8 and Scat Pack models with the 6.4-liter V-8.

The main change is a new Jailbreak option for the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody, with model-specific exterior color and interior trim options.

Dodge has said the Challenger and its four-door Charger sibling will stick around through the end of 2023 in their current forms.

You can count on Dodge offering a Challenger successor, likely with some form of electrification, but it’s unclear if the Hellcat engine will survive into the next generation.

2022 Dodge Challenger Hellcat Manual Option Temporarily Removed

The 2022 Challenger Hellcat manual has been pulled from Dodge’s site, and there’s no firm date on when it will come back.

Mar 3, 2022Well, it looks like the 2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat manual option has been removed from Dodge’s site, for now.

A forum post, via Road & Track, dating back to December 10, 2021 shows that the manual transmission version of the Challenger Hellcat is not currently available.

Looking on Dodge’s website, every other manual option of the Challenger can be ordered-but the Hellcat manual isn’t even on the site.

When we did ask if there was a calibration issue with the Challenger Hellcat, Dodge did confirm, but added that updating calibrations are a normal part of vehicle production and that this isn’t related to the issues with silicon-based chip and PCM supply shortages currently disrupting the industry.

Dodge says it’s unsure of when the updated programming will be ready and when the Challenger Hellcat manual will come back for ordering.

For now, if you were interested in a manual Challenger Hellcat you’ll have to pick something else, go with the automatic, or just wait and hope Dodge can bring it back.

AUSTIN, Texas – Spirit Airlines announced Wednesday two new daily nonstop flights from Monterrey, Mexico, to Austin and Houston.

Spirit said the Austin flight will be the only nonstop flight between the two cities.

“We’re excited about growing our international service from Texas with new daily nonservice from Austin and Houston to Monterrey, Mexico,” said John Kirby, Spirit Airline’s vice president of network planning.

“Whether traveling for leisure or to visit friends and relatives, Spirit Airlines continues to provide our Guests with More Go.”.

The announcement from Spirit is the latest of several new flights coming to Austin’s airport.
