Post Idea #1: Preimplantation genetic diagnosis

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis involves testing for specific genetic conditions prior to the implantation of an embryo in the uterine wall.
The purpose of PGD is to identify what are considered to be abnormal embryos in order to select the most desirable embryos for implantation.
Diagnosis is comprised of two steps: extraction of one or two cells from an IVF-produced embryo, and application of the PGD test.
With PGD testing, embryos created through IVF are cultured in a laboratory for three days until they reach the 8-cell stage.
If a blastomere is diagnosed with aneuploidy, the embryo from which it was removed is expected to have the condition as well.
Although not very common, errors can occur and result in misdiagnosis leading to the discarding of a normal embryo, or an affected embryo being transferred into the mother.
The individual blastomeres of the embryo are totipotent, meaning that they have the same developmental potential as an embryo.
Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis
For some couples such tests are not acceptable, and preimplantation genetic diagnosis is an alternative.
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis involves testing the early embryo after in vitro fertilisation.
Some potential parents who carry a chromosomal rearrangement may never have achieved a viable pregnancy before requesting preimplantation genetic diagnosis if each previous conception resulted in a chromosomally unbalanced embryo which miscarried spontaneously.
Recently the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology published results on 886 couples undergoing 1318 cycles of preimplantation genetic diagnosis over seven years.
In about a third of cases the genetic indication for preimplantation genetic diagnosis was combined with subfertility, necessitating in vitro fertilisation or intracytoplasmic sperm injection.
The high incidence of multiple pregnancies after preimplantation genetic diagnosis is a concern.
Data so far suggest that children born after preimplantation genetic diagnosis do not have a higher incidence of congenital malformations or neonatal problems than children born after “Regular” intracytoplasmic sperm injection, but they need to be followed up systematically through childhood.
Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis
Through generally available genetic screening occasionally couples who are seeking fertility treatment are found to be at risk of passing on an inherited condition, and PGD may be an option for them.
The resulting embryos are grown in culture until the six-to-eight-cell stage, which is day three of embryo development.
At this point, the embryo is biopsied with the removal of one to two cells.
This process does not damage the cells remaining within the embryo.
The isolated cells are evaluated for specific genetic conditions.
At UCSF, our embryology laboratory staff has extensive experience with embryo micromanipulation and biopsy.
Our genetic counselor is available to coordinate your cycle with the IVF team and the PGD laboratory, to make the process as smooth as possible.
Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis identifies genetic abnormalities in preimplantation embryos prior to embryo transfer, so only unaffected embryos established from in vitro fertilization are transferred.
From: Genetic Steroid Disorders, 2014.Molecular Genetic Technology PGD for Mendelian DisordersPGD is used to describe genetic testing that occurs before an embryo implants in the uterus.
Couples at risk of transmitting a genetic condition and concurrently suffering from infertility may more easily combine IVF and PGD.The technology applied in preimplantation genetic screening or aneuploidy screening is similar to PGD, but the objective is different.
A close collaboration is required between the IVF unit and a genetic diagnosis unit, specialized in genetic analysis for PGD. Both units may be physically and organizationally within the same institute.
Genetic Screening and Diagnosis Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis for Single-Gene DisordersApproximately one-fourth of PGT cases are performed for couples at risk for one or more single-gene disorders.
Enables genetic diagnosis of embryos derived from in vitro fertilization, with the purpose of avoiding the transmission of genetic diseases to offspring.

Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis
PGD has dramatically improved the success rate of IVF, according to Mark Hughes, MD, PhD, CEO of Genesis Genetics in Plymouth, Mich. “Because approximately 40 percent of IVF embryos have the wrong number of chromosomes, and virtually all of those do not produce a pregnancy, the success rate of IVF has recently sky-rocketed because preimplantation genetic screening allows for a single embryo to be transferred-avoiding multiple gestation-with upwards of 80 percent likelihood of a pregnancy,” he said.
A Legal Perspective on PGD. From a legal standpoint, the major issue regarding preimplantation genetic diagnosis relates to the accuracy of diagnosis.
“Recent studies suggest that even chromosomally normal fetuses in ongoing pregnancies have a substantial risk of possessing clinically relevant insertions or deletions, called indels. It may be possible to screen for these indels prior to embryo transfer.” Furthermore, innovations such as clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats technology introduce the possibility of correcting regions of the genome with pathologic mutations, potentially transforming this area of medicine from PGD to preimplantation genetic treatment.
Using PGD to select desirable traits based on personal and social values, called “Designer babies,” will continue to be explored, according to Ann Gronowski, PhD, a professor of pathology and immunology and obstetrics and gynecology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. In fact, Mountain View, Calif.-based 23andMe, a genetic testing company that sells at-home DNA kits directly to consumers, announced a patent in 2013 that will allow people to shop for gamete donors using a proprietary, so-called genetic calculator.
“While PGD is available for a number of conditions, it may not be able to be performed in every case in which an embryo is at risk for a genetic disease,” she said.
“It is important to note that while PGD and preimplantation genetic screening reduce genetic risks, they do not eliminate them,” Darilek added.
“Prenatal testing through chorionic villus sampling or amniocentesis is still strongly recommended to confirm PGD and preimplantation genetic screening results.”

Second, people fear that genetic screening will lead to reproductive decisions being based on the genetics of their child.
Are there any ethical issues with preimplantation genetic diagnosis?
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis, selecting embryos based on genetic analysis before pregnancy by in vitro fertilisation, gives rise to ethical issues on the basic, clinical and societal level.
Introduction Preimplantation genetic diagnosis is an alternative to prenatal diagnosis; it is suitable for couples who are at substantial risk of conceiving a pregnancy affected by a known genetic disorder.
Objectives To reduce the variation in access to PGD To ensure that PGD is commissioned for those conditions for which there is acceptable evidence of clinical benefit and cost-effectiveness To reduce unacceptable variation in clinical practice in the conditions referred for PGD To promote the cost-effective use of healthcare resources 4.
5 PGD versus PGS PGD should NOT be confused with Pre-implantation Genetic Screening mentioned above.
For NHS England to purchase PGD services from a Provider, the PGD Provider would have to be licensed by the HFEA and utilise a laboratory that has demonstrated compliance with ISO:15189 standards as assessed and accredited by CPA/UKAS. Not all the licensed or CPA accredited PGD Providers in appendix 1 currently have contracts with NHS England.
11 The Centre for Reproductive Health in London reports a PGD take up rate of 50%. 12 Utilisation of PGD – Data from the HFEA on the number of PGD cycles that took place shows a steady increase in the utilisation of the PGD technology as evidenced by the number of PGD cycles taking place.
Information about the effectiveness of PGD in reducing the risk of passing on a genetic disease compared with a couple getting pregnant spontaneously is based on observational studies, with the largest case series being that from the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology PGD Consortium.
In its most recent report, information is provided on over 10,000 PGD cycles that took place between January 1997 and December 2008.17 The two main techniques used in the PGD process to identify embryos at risk of the genetic disease being tested for are Polymerase Chain Reaction and Fluorescence in situ hybridisation.
As part of this commissioning policy, PGD Service providers will provide two sets of auditable data to NHS commissioners for all the NHS PGD cycles they have provided: Data set 1: Monthly minimum data set on the PGD cycles for that month.

Essential Oils
Synthetic oils are not considered true essential oils.
Clinical research found a possible link between the topical use of essential oils and the onset of male gynecomastia, or the development of breast tissue, in prepubescent boys.
The scientists applied pure essential lavender oil, tea tree oil, or eight of their chemical components to human cell lines in test tubes, known as in vitro experiments.
Which essential oils and components were tested in the NIEHS study?
The clinical cases have only described using essential oils on skin or topical exposure and not aromatherapy.
NIEHS researchers created different dilutions of the two types of pure essential oils and the eight selected chemical components and tested their activity.
The researchers want the public to be aware of the findings, since some essential oils and their components display hormonal activity and could be potential EDCs.
Essential Oil
Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils, aetheroleum, or simply as the oil of the plant from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove.
An essential oil is essential in the sense that it contains the essence of the plant’s fragrance-the characteristic fragrance of the plant from which it is derived.
Due to the relatively large quantities of oil in citrus peel and low cost to grow and harvest the raw materials, citrus-fruit oils are cheaper than most other essential oils.
Increased use of essential oils as pest control could have not only ecological, but economical benefits as the essential oil market diversifies and popularity increases among organic farmers and environmentally conscious consumers.
As of 2012 some EOs are authorized, and in use, in the European Union: Melaleuca oil as a fungicide, citronella oil as a herbicide, Syzygium aromaticum oil as a fungicide and bactericide, Mentha spicata oil as a plant growth regulator; Citrus sinensis oil for Bemisia tabaci on Cucurbita pepo and Trialeurodes vaporariorum on Solanum lycopersicum; and approvals for oils of Thymus, C. sinensis, and Tagetes as insecticides are pending.
The potential toxicity of essential oil is related to its level or grade of purity, and to the toxicity of specific chemical components of the oil.
Rather than refer to essential oils themselves, modern works typically discuss specific chemical compounds of which the essential oils are composed, such as referring to methyl salicylate rather than “Oil of wintergreen”.
Essential Oils: 11 Main Benefits And 101 Uses
This is especially true because essential oils benefits are vast, and essential oils uses range from aromatherapy to household cleaning products, personal beauty care and natural medicine treatments.
How do essential oils work? By concentrating the oils of these plants, you literally separate the most powerful healing compounds of a plant into a single oil.
Essential oils are composed of very small molecules that can penetrate your cells, and some compounds in essential oils can even cross the blood-brain barrier.
A review published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that “At least 90 essential oils can be identified as being recommended for dermatological use, with at least 1,500 combinations.” What gives these oils their skin benefits is their ability to fight against pathogens that are responsible for dermatological infections.
Essential oils can be used as a powerful form of medicine, but remember, essential oils are powerful.
Some essential oils uses and DIY recipes call for carrier oils.
Some people ask for a list of essential oils before they realize how many essential oils exist.

Post Idea #5: Electricity generation

U.S. Energy Information Administration
Different types of turbines include steam turbines, combustion turbines, hydroelectric turbines, and wind turbines.
Most steam turbines have a boiler in which a fuel is burned to produce hot water and steam in a heat exchanger, and the steam powers a turbine that drives a generator.
Combined-cycle systems use combustion gases from one turbine to generate more electricity in another turbine.
Which may be referred to as cogenerators, use the heat that is not directly converted to electricity in a steam turbine, combustion turbine, or an internal combustion engine generator for industrial process heat or for space and water heating.
Hydroelectric turbines use the force of moving water to spin turbine blades to power a generator.
Ocean thermal energy conversion systems use a temperature difference between ocean water at different depths to power a turbine to produce electricity.
These energy storage systems use electricity to charge a storage facility or device, and the amount of electricity that they can supply is less than the amount they use for charging.
Electricity Generation
Total worldwide gross production of electricity in 2016 was 25 082 TWh. Sources of electricity were coal and peat 38.3%, natural gas 23.1%, hydroelectric 16.6%, nuclear power 10.4%, oil 3.7%, solar/wind/geothermal/tidal/other 5.6%, biomass and waste 2.3%. [edit].
Electricity generation is the fourth highest combined source of NOx, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter in the US. According to the International Energy Agency, low-carbon electricity generation needs to account for 85% of global electrical output by 2040 in order to ward off the worst effects of climate change.
Like EIC founder Bret Kugelmass, believe that nuclear power is the primary method for decarbonising electricity generation because it can also power direct air capture that removes existing carbon emissions from the atmosphere.
Almost all power plants used in centralised generation are thermal power plants meaning that they use a fuel to heat steam to produce a pressurised gas which in turn spins a turbine and generates electricity.
The fundamental issues regarding the use of coal in electricity generation is to with the greenhouse gases released by the burning of coal, and the limited amount of coal on earth, leading many to agree that is a very unsustainable way of producing electricity.
Large thermal power plants produce the vast majority of electricity for residential areas, although there has been an increase in renewable sources of energy, it still only makes up around 8% of all electricity consumed.
Centralised generation vs distributed generation is an argument that has recently surfaced, with many claiming that centralised generation is a way of the past and that distributed generation is the future of electricity production.
Electricity Generation
The United States of America continues to generate the most geothermal electricity in the world: more than 3.5 gigawatts, predominantly from the western United States.
Known as enhanced geothermal systems, this technology could be a game-changer in the geothermal sector, tapping 100+ gigawatts of geothermal energy, roughly ten percent of domestic energy demand.
POWER PLANTS. Power plants use steam produced from geothermal reservoirs to generate electricity.
Dry steam power plants systems were the first type of geothermal power generation plants built.
Flash steam plants are the most common type of geothermal power generation plants in operation today.
Binary cycle geothermal power generation plants differ from Dry Steam and Flash Steam systems in that the water or steam from the geothermal reservoir never comes in contact with the turbine/generator units.
Because resources below 300°F represent the most common geothermal resource, a significant proportion of geothermal electricity in the future could come from binary-cycle plants.
Electricity Generation
Electricity generation is defined as electricity generated from fossil fuels, nuclear power plants, hydro power plants, geothermal systems, solar panels, biofuels, wind, etc.
It includes electricity produced in electricity-only plants and in combined heat and power plants.
Both main activity producer and autoproducer plants are included, where data are available.
Main activity producers generate electricity for sale to third parties as their primary activity.
Autoproducers generate electricity wholly or partly for their own use as an activity supporting their primary activity.
Both types of plants may be privately or publicly owned.

Coal Mining
Coal mining continues as an important economic activity today, but has begun to decline due to the strong contribution coal plays in global warming and environmental issues, which result in decreasing demand and in some geographies, peak coal.
Opencast coal mining recovers a greater proportion of the coal deposit than underground methods, as more of the coal seams in the strata may be exploited.
Mountaintop coal mining is a surface mining practice involving removal of mountaintops to expose coal seams, and disposing of associated mining overburden in adjacent “Valley fills.” Valley fills occur in steep terrain where there are limited disposal alternatives.
When coal is compared to solar photovoltaic generation, the latter could save 51,999 American lives per year if solar were to replace coal-based energy generation in the U.S. Due to the decline of jobs related to coal mining a study found that approximately one American suffers a premature death from coal pollution for every job remaining in coal mining.
The list of historical coal mining disasters is a long one, although work related coal deaths has declined substantially as safety measures have been enacted and underground mining has given up market share to surface mining.
These areas grew and were shaped by coal mining and coal processing, and this is still visible even after the end of the coal mining.
As of 2019, there are 436 coal mining companies, 740 coal mines, and more mining and exploration licences are being tendered.
Definition, History, Types, & Facts
Developments in mine entry Shafts Except for the Chinese, who may have mined coal underground, all the early coal seams were worked from the surface, in fully exposed outcroppings.
The presence of noxious and flammable gases caused miners to recognize the critical importance of ventilation in coal mines from the earliest days.
From manual to mechanized extraction Conventional mining Early European miners wedged coal out of the seam or broke it loose with a pick.
Development of continuous mining The conventional mining techniques described above, made up of the cyclic operations of cutting, drilling, blasting, and loading, developed in association with room-and-pillar mining.
The oldest of the basic underground methods, room-and-pillar mining grew naturally out of the need to recover more coal as mining operations became deeper and more expensive.
Origins of longwall mining The other principal method of modern mining, longwall mining, had been introduced as early as the 17th century and had found general use by the 19th century, but it had long been less productive than room-and-pillar mining.
In 1924 a conveyor belt was successfully used in an anthracite mine in central Pennsylvania to carry coal from a group of room conveyors to a string of cars at the mine entry.
World Coal Association
It recovers a higher proportion of the coal deposit than underground mining as all coal seams are exploited – 90% or more of the coal can be recovered.
The coal is loaded on to large trucks or conveyors for transport to either the coal preparation plant or direct to where it will be used.
In room-and-pillar mining, coal deposits are mined by cutting a network of ‘rooms’ into the coal seam and leaving behind ‘pillars’ of coal to support the roof of the mine.
These pillars can be up to 40% of the total coal in the seam – although this coal can sometimes be recovered at a later stage.
The coal ‘face’ can vary in length from 100-350m. Self-advancing, hydraulically-powered supports temporarily hold up the roof while coal is extracted.
Over 75% of the coal in the deposit can be extracted from panels of coal that can extend 3km through the coal seam.
The coal industry takes the issue of safety very seriously; modern coal mines have rigorous safety procedures, health and safety standards and worker education and training.
U.S. Energy Information Administration
Coal miners use large machines to remove coal from the earth.
Many U.S. coal deposits, called coal beds or seams, are near the earth’s surface, while others are deep underground.
Modern mining methods allow coal miners to easily reach most of the nation’s coal reserves and to produce about three times more coal in one hour than in 1978.
About two-thirds of U.S. coal production is from surface mines because surface mining is less expensive than underground mining.
Underground mining, sometimes called deep mining, is necessary when the coal is several hundred feet below the surface.
After removing the coal from the ground, the miners may send it to a preparation plant near the mining site.
Transporting coal can be more expensive than the cost of mining coal.
Alberta To Release Reports With Recommendations On Rocky Mountain Coal Mining
EDMONTON – The Alberta government says it will release today two reports on coal mining in the Rocky Mountains.
The reports come after nine months of work from a five-member panel that consulted widely across the province.
The panel held 67 sessions with more than 70 groups and received 176 written submissions.
The submissions and a survey with about 25,000 respondents have already been made public and show Albertans have major concerns with open-pit coal mining in one of the province’s best-loved and most environmentally sensitive landscapes.
The government is also expected to release a second report with the panel’s recommendations on how the province should proceed.
Coal mining in the Rockies has been a hot topic in Alberta for two years, ever since the United Conservative government revoked a policy that had protected those summits and foothills since 1976.
Thousands of hectares were quickly leased for exploration, but a public outcry forced the government to halt those activities and pause lease sales until the panel reported.
Coal Unit Retirements Mark ‘End Of An Era’ For Heskett Station
Chief Operating Officer Joe Micheletti added that the mine has employed 26 people who, in recent years, have supplied Heskett with about 400,000 tons of coal annually.
About 50 people worked at Heskett before its coal retirements were announced.
Heskett Station will no longer burn coal, but it will continue to send power into the grid via an existing gas-fired unit and another one planned for the site.
MDU has cited low-cost natural gas, the low price of power on the market and rising coal costs as factors in retiring Heskett’s coal units.
MDU recently entered into an agreement with Minnkota Power Cooperative to purchase power from the coal-fired Milton R. Young Station to help bridge the gap between Heskett’s coal retirements and its new gas unit.
Heskett’s retirements come as the coal industry has struggled amid an influx of natural gas and renewable energy across the United States.
Heskett marks the second coal plant to shutter in recent memory in North Dakota.

The eastern edge of the Rockies rises dramatically above the Interior Plains of central North America, including the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of New Mexico and Colorado, the Front Range of Colorado, the Wind River Range and Big Horn Mountains of Wyoming, the Absaroka-Beartooth ranges and Rocky Mountain Front of Montana and the Clark Range of Alberta.
Other more northerly mountain ranges of the eastern Canadian Cordillera continue beyond the Liard River valley, including the Selwyn, Mackenzie and Richardson Mountains in Yukon as well as the British Mountains/Brooks Range in Alaska, but those are not officially recognized as part of the Rockies by the Geological Survey of Canada, although the Geological Society of America definition does consider them parts of the Rocky Mountains system as the “Arctic Rockies”.
The rocks in the Rocky Mountains were formed before the mountains were raised by tectonic forces.
The current Rocky Mountains arose in the Laramide orogeny from between 80 and 55 Ma. For the Canadian Rockies, the mountain building is analogous to pushing a rug on a hardwood floor: : 78 the rug bunches up and forms wrinkles.
The Rocky Mountains are an important habitat for a great deal of well-known wildlife, such as wolves, elk, moose, mule and white-tailed deer, pronghorn, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, badgers, black bears, grizzly bears, coyotes, lynxes, cougars, and wolverines.
Mountain men, primarily French, Spanish, and British, roamed the Rocky Mountains from 1720 to 1800 seeking mineral deposits and furs.
The fur-trading North West Company established Rocky Mountain House as a trading post in what is now the Rocky Mountain Foothills of present-day Alberta in 1799, and their business rivals the Hudson’s Bay Company established Acton House nearby.
Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park’s 415 square miles encompasses a spectacular range of mountain environments.
From meadows found in the montane life zone to the glistening lakes in the subalpine zone and to the mountain peaks located in the alpine zone, there is something for everyone to discover.
Along the way explore over 300 miles of hiking trails and incredible wildlife viewing.
Location, Map, History, & Facts
Rocky Mountains, byname the Rockies, mountain range forming the cordilleran backbone of the great upland system that dominates the western North American continent.
The Rocky Mountains include at least 100 separate ranges, which are generally divided into four broad groupings: the Canadian Rockies and Northern Rockies of Montana and northeastern Idaho; the Middle Rockies of Wyoming, Utah, and southeastern Idaho; the Southern Rockies, mainly in Colorado and New Mexico; and the Colorado Plateau in the Four Corners region of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona.
The western margin of the Canadian Rockies and Northern Rockies is marked by the Rocky Mountain Trench, a graben up to 3,000 feet deep and several miles wide that has been glaciated and partially filled with deposits from glacial meltwaters.
The Middle Rockies include the Bighorn and Wind River ranges in Wyoming, the Wasatch Range of southeastern Idaho and northern Utah, and the Uinta Mountains of northeastern Utah; the Absaroka Range, extending from northwestern Wyoming into Montana, serves as a link between the Northern and Middle Rockies.
While the massive deposition of carbonates was occurring in the Canadian and Northern Rockies from the late Precambrian to the early Mesozoic, a considerably smaller quantity of clastic sediments was accumulating in the Middle Rockies.
The Southern Rockies experienced less of the low-angle thrust-faulting that characterizes the Canadian and Northern Rockies and the western portions of the Middle Rockies.
The ranges of the Southern Rockies are higher than those of the Middle or Northern Rockies, with many peaks exceeding elevations of 14,000 feet.
Rocky Mountains
The Rocky Mountains are bordered by the Great Plains on the east; and by the Canadian Coast Mountains, the Interior Plateau, the Columbia Plateau, and the Basin and Range Province of the United States on the west.
The Rocky Mountains contain more than 100 individual mountain ranges which are further organized into four broad groups.
The Rocky Mountain Trench forms the western boundary of the Canadian Rockies and separates the Columbia Mountains from the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies.
Located in the Sawatch Mountain range in the US State of Colorado is Mount Elbert, which rises to an elevation of 4,401.2m and is the highest point in Colorado as well as the entire Rocky Mountains.
The Rocky Mountains vary in width from less than 100km in the Canadian Rockies to about 600km in the Middle Rockies.
Located in the Lewis Range of the Rocky Mountains in the Glacier National Park is the Triple Divide Peak, where water falling on the mountain drains into the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans as well as the Hudson Bay.
The tree-line elevation of the Rocky Mountains varies from 3,700m in New Mexico to about 760m at the northern extremity of the Rocky Mountains.

Rocky Mountain 5th Most Visited National Park In 2021
Last year, total visitation in Rocky Mountain National Park reached 4,434,848 people, which was the fifth most guests entering the park in single year in the park’s history.
Coincidentally, in 2021, RMNP was the fifth most visited national park in the United States.
While some of the most well-known national parks such as RMNP had record visitation, numbers across the entire National Park System remained below pre-pandemic totals.
While RMNP was the fifth most visited national park, it was the 14th most visited site in the NPS. The most visited NPS site was the Blue Ridge Parkway with 15.9 million visitors.
Second on the list of most visited NPS sites, but atop the list of most visited national parks, is the Great Smokey Mountains National Park with 14.1 million visitors.
The Top 5 most visited national parks in 2021 were the Great Smokey Mountains, Zion with 5.03 million, Yellowstone with 4.86 million, Grand Canyon with 4.53 million, and RMNP with 4.43 million guests.

Melioidosis
About 10% of people with melioidosis develop symptoms that last longer than two months, termed “Chronic melioidosis”.
In developed countries, such as in Europe and the United States, cases of melioidosis are generally imported from countries where melioidosis is more common.
Diabetes is a major risk factor for melioidosis; over half of melioidosis cases are in people with diabetes.
People infected with B. pseudomallei develop antibodies against the bacteria, and people who live in endemic areas tend to have antibodies in their blood that recognize B. pseudomallei, but the effectiveness of these antibodies at preventing melioidosis is unclear.
In Australia, less than 5% of people have B. pseudomallei antibodies, so the presence of even relatively low amounts of antibody is unusual and could suggest melioidosis.
Greater than 50% of people with melioidosis have diabetes; diabetics have a 12-fold increased risk of contracting melioidosis.
In 2015, B. pseudomallei DNA was detected in filtered air using quantitative PCR. In 2016, a statistical model was developed to predict the occurrence of global melioidosis per year.
Melioidosis: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment, And More
The symptoms of melioidosis vary depending on the type of infection.
The most common way melioidosis shows up in people is through a lung infection.
Pulmonary melioidosis infection can mimic tuberculosis because they both can lead to pneumonia, high fever, night sweats, weight loss, bloody sputum, and pus or blood in the lung tissues.
People older than age 40 may also have a higher risk of contracting a melioidosis blood infection and developing more serious symptoms than younger people.
Treatment may vary depending on the type of melioidosis.
The first stage of treatment for melioidosis is a minimum of 10 to 14 days of an antibiotic given by intravenous line.
If travelers develop pneumonia or septic shock upon returning from tropical or subtropical areas, their doctors need to consider melioidosis as a possible diagnosis.
Melioidosis: Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, And Management
A mutant of Burkholderia pseudomallei, auxotrophic in the branched chain amino acid biosynthetic pathway, is attenuated and protective in a murine model of melioidosis.

Seronegative bacteremic melioidosis caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei with ambiguous biochemical profile: clinical importance of accurate identification by 16S rRNA gene and groEL gene sequencing.
What Is Melioidosis?
Melioidosis infections can range from mild to very serious.
You could have a localized infection in a particular area of your body.
Melioidosis can also cause a range of symptoms in animals based on the type of infection.
A localized melioidosis infection usually affects a particular area of your skin.
According to the CDC, the infection from the rare bacteria can be deadly and cause you to become seriously ill.
Localized infection – it’s limited to one part of the body.
Disseminated infection – the bacteria may have spread to different organs in the body.
Melioidosis: Definition, Treatment, And Diagnosis
Melioidosis is a condition that occurs when someone comes into contact with certain bacteria in infected water or soil.
Melioidosis diagnoses are usually in those who have traveled to an area outside of the U.S. where melioidosis occurs more commonly.
A person can contract the bacterial infection that leads to melioidosis through different areas of their body.
A person must complete the full prescribed treatment for melioidosis.
A doctor will diagnose melioidosis by asking a person about their symptoms, considering their travel history, and conducting a physical examination.
A person should see their doctor as soon as possible if they suspect that they have melioidosis.
If a person at greater risk of melioidosis – such as those with diabetes or a weak immune system – is traveling to an area where melioidosis is common, they should talk to their doctor about other preventive tips and safety precautions.
Symptoms Of Melioidosis Explained Amid CDC Warning About Rare Tropical Disease
Doctors in the U.S. have been told to look out for melioidosis symptoms after two people died from the rare infectious disease.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed four cases of melioidosis, which is also known as Whitmore’s disease, among both adults and children in four states: Kansas, Georgia, Texas and Minnesota.
Diabetes, liver disease, renal disease, thalassemia, cancer, and chronic lung diseases can make people more susceptible to melioidosis.
Melioidosis symptoms are wide-ranging and can vary depending on the type of infection.
Symptoms of a localized melioidosis infection include localized pain and swellings, fever, ulcers, and abscesses.
Symptoms of a disseminated melioidosis infection include a fever, headache, weight loss, pains in the stomach, chest, muscles or joints, seizures, or an infection of the brain or central nervous system.
Melioidosis cases are rare in the U.S., with the disease more common in Australia and Southeast Asia.

What is life insurance? Purchasing life insurance allows you to provide a safety net for your loved ones in case you pass away.
A life insurance policy is a contract stating that, as long as your premium is paid and the policy is active when you die, your beneficiaries can receive a death benefit payout to be used however they like – for final expenses, paying off outstanding debt, and even everyday costs.
Term life policies provide coverage if you pass away within a set number of years, while permanent policies such as whole life, universal life, and final expense provide coverage for your entire life.
Consider a 1-year term if you’re just starting out with life insurance or you want to fill a temporary gap in coverage before getting a policy with a longer term.
eFinancial works with highly rated life insurance companies to help bring you competitive rates and a variety of simplified life insurance options, such as RAPIDecision® Life – giving you the possibility to purchase life insurance with no exam.
Keep in mind that permanent life policies generally cost more than term life policies.

Explaining life insurance Life insurance helps your life’s moments live on.
Whether you’re looking for the affordability of term insurance, the lifelong protection and cash value of permanent insurance, or a combination of both, we have options to fit your needs and budget.
Permanent life insurance develops cash value that can be borrowed.
Policy loans accrue interest and unpaid policy loans and interest will reduce the death benefit and cash value of the policy.
The amount of cash value available will generally depend on the type of permanent policy purchase, the amount of coverage purchase, the length of time the policy has been in force and any outstanding policy loans.
For more details on coverage, costs, restrictions, and renewability, or to apply for coverage, contact a local State Farm agent.
Life Insurance Solutions
Life insurance comes in two main types – term and permanent – which may both be available through your workplace.
Term life insurance pays a specific lump sum to your loved ones for a specified period of time – usually from one to 20 years.
Term policies pay benefits if you die during the period covered by the policy, but they do not build cash value.
That is, you can take the coverage with you if you leave your company.
Some permanent life insurance policies accumulate cash value.
That means, the value of the policy will grow each year, tax-deferred, until it matches the face value of the policy.
To put additional money into the policy on a tax-favored basis.
Life Insurance
Life insurance is a contract between an insurance policy holder and an insurer or assurer, where the insurer promises to pay a designated beneficiary a sum of money upon the death of an insured person.
In cases where the policy owner is not the insured, insurance companies have sought to limit policy purchases to those with an insurable interest in the CQV. For life insurance policies, close family members and business partners will usually be found to have an insurable interest.
There are several types of universal life insurance policies, including interest-sensitive, variable universal life, guaranteed death benefit, and has equity-indexed universal life insurance.
These are often low to moderate face value whole life insurance policies, allowing senior citizens to purchase affordable insurance later in life.
Pre-need life insurance policies are limited premium payment, whole life policies that are usually purchased by older applicants, though they are available to everyone.
Stranger-originated life insurance or STOLI is a life insurance policy that is held or financed by a person who has no relationship to the insured person.
In the case of life insurance, there is a possible motive to purchase a life insurance policy, particularly if the face value is substantial, and then murder the insured.

Falling Giant: A Case Study Of AIG
Almost a decade after it was handed a government bailout worth about $150 billion, the U.S. Financial Stability Oversight Council voted to remove AIG from its list of institutions that are systemic risks, or in headline terms, “Too big to fail.” In 2013, the company repaid the last installment on its debt to taxpayers, and the U.S. government relinquished its stake in AIG. High-Flying AIG For decades, AIG was a global powerhouse in the business of selling insurance.
The epicenter of the crisis was at an office in London, where a division of the company called AIG Financial Products nearly caused the downfall of a pillar of American capitalism.
A huge number of mutual funds, pension funds, and hedge funds invested in AIG or were insured by it, or both.
Money market funds, generally seen as safe investments for the individual investor, were also at risk since many had invested in AIG bonds.
If AIG went down, it would send shockwaves through the already shaky money markets as millions lost money in investments that were supposed to be safe.
The Government Steps In While AIG hung on by a thread, negotiations took place among company executives and federal officials.
The Federal Reserve issued the initial loan to AIG in exchange for 79.9% company’s equity.

Primary care providers sometimes diagnose and treat ADHD. They may also refer individuals to a mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist, who can do a thorough evaluation and make an ADHD diagnosis.
Stress, sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, and other physical conditions or illnesses can cause similar symptoms to those of ADHD. Therefore, a thorough evaluation is necessary to determine the cause of the symptoms.
Symptoms of ADHD can be mistaken for emotional or disciplinary problems or missed entirely in children who primarily have symptoms of inattention, leading to a delay in diagnosis.
For many people, ADHD medications reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity and improve their ability to focus, work, and learn.
The most common type of medication used for treating ADHD is called a “Stimulant.” Although it may seem unusual to treat ADHD with a medication that is considered a stimulant, it works by increasing the brain chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine, which play essential roles in thinking and attention.
Although not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration specifically for the treatment of ADHD, some antidepressants are used alone or in combination with a stimulant to treat ADHD. Antidepressants may help all of the symptoms of ADHD and can be prescribed if a patient has bothersome side effects from stimulants.
The National Resource Center on ADHD, a program of Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has information and many resources.
What Is ADHD?
Children with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, or be overly active.
Children with ADHD do not just grow out of these behaviors.
Causes of ADHD. Scientists are studying cause(s) and risk factors in an effort to find better ways to manage and reduce the chances of a person having ADHD. The cause(s) and risk factors for ADHD are unknown, but current research shows that genetics plays an important role.
Research does not support the popularly held views that ADHD is caused by eating too much sugar, watching too much television, parenting, or social and environmental factors such as poverty or family chaos.
Deciding if a child has ADHD is a process with several steps.
One step of the process involves having a medical exam, including hearing and vision tests, to rule out other problems with symptoms like ADHD. Diagnosing ADHD usually includes a checklist for rating ADHD symptoms and taking a history of the child from parents, teachers, and sometimes, the child.
Being healthy is important for all children and can be especially important for children with ADHD. In addition to behavioral therapy and medication, having a healthy lifestyle can make it easier for your child to deal with ADHD symptoms.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
Symptoms of hyperactivity tend to go away with age and turn into inner restlessness in teens and adults with ADHD. Although not listed as an official symptom for this condition, emotional dysregulation is generally understood to be a common symptom of ADHD. People with ADHD of all ages are more likely to have problems with social skills, such as social interaction and forming and maintaining friendships.
Conduct disorder involves more impairment in motivation control than ADHD. Intermittent explosive disorder is characterized by sudden and disproportionate outbursts of anger, and commonly co-occurs with ADHD. Anxiety and mood disorders are frequent comorbidities.
Siblings of children with ADHD are three to four times more likely to develop the disorder than siblings of children without the disorder.
ADHD is alternately classified as neurodevelopmental disorder or a disruptive behavior disorder along with ODD, CD, and antisocial personality disorder.
Many but not all of these are also common comorbidities of ADHD. Symptoms of ADHD, such as low mood and poor self-image, mood swings, and irritability, can be confused with dysthymia, cyclothymia or bipolar disorder as well as with borderline personality disorder.
The terminology used to describe the condition has changed over time and has included: minimal brain dysfunction in the DSM-I, hyperkinetic reaction of childhood in the DSM-II, and attention-deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity in the DSM-III. In 1987, this was changed to ADHD in the DSM-III-R, and in 1994 the DSM-IV in split the diagnosis into three subtypes: ADHD inattentive type, ADHD hyperactive-impulsive type, and ADHD combined type.
A 2020 review found that creativity may be associated with ADHD symptoms, particularly divergent thinking and quantity of creative achievements, but not with the disorder of ADHD itself – i.e. it has not been found in patients diagnosed with the disorder, only in patients with subclinical symptoms or those that possess traits associated with the disorder.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
The diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has been surrounded by controversy over the last century.
Over the past 30 years a consensus has been developed regarding both the existence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and the symptoms and signs that define it.

Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
Adult ADHD can lead to unstable relationships, poor work or school performance, low self-esteem, and other problems.
Though it’s called adult ADHD, symptoms start in early childhood and continue into adulthood.
In some cases, ADHD is not recognized or diagnosed until the person is an adult.
Adult ADHD symptoms may not be as clear as ADHD symptoms in children.
Treatment for adult ADHD is similar to treatment for childhood ADHD. Adult ADHD treatment includes medications, psychological counseling and treatment for any mental health conditions that occur along with ADHD.Products & Services Symptoms.
Many adults with ADHD also have depression, bipolar disorder or another mood disorder.
Adults with ADHD are at increased risk of other psychiatric disorders, such as personality disorders, intermittent explosive disorder and substance use disorders.
What Is Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is described as the most common neurobehavioral condition of childhood.
We raise the concern that ADHD is not a disease per se but rather a group of symptoms representing a final common behavioral pathway for a gamut of emotional, psychological, and/or learning problems.
Increasing numbers of children, especially boys, are diagnosed with ADHD and treated with stimulant medications according to a simplified approach.
“Core” ADHD symptoms of inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsivity are not unique to ADHD. Rates of “Comorbid” psychiatric and learning problems, including depression and anxiety, range from 12 to 60%, with significant symptom overlap with ADHD, difficulties in diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment methods that do not include stimulant medications.
No neuropsychologic test result is pathognomic for ADHD, and structural and functional neuroimaging studies have not identified a unique etiology for ADHD. No genetic marker has been consistently identified, and heritability studies are confounded by familial environmental factors.
The validity of the Conners’ Rating Scale-Revised has been seriously questioned, and parent and teacher “Ratings” of school children are frequently discrepant, suggesting that use of subjective informant data via scale or interview does not form an objective basis for diagnosis of ADHD. Empiric diagnostic trials of stimulant medication that produce a behavioral response have been shown not to distinguish between children with and without “ADHD.” In summary, the working dogma that ADHD is a disease or neurobehavioral condition does not at this time hold up to scrutiny of evidence.
Thorough evaluation of symptomatic children should be individualized, and include assessment of educational, psychologic, psychiatric, and family needs.

Restricted stock became more popular in the mid-2000s as companies were required to expense stock option grants.
Restricted stock is often used as a form of employee compensation, in which case, it typically becomes transferrable upon the satisfaction of certain conditions, such as continued employment for a period of time or the achievement of particular product-development milestones, earnings per share goals, or other financial targets.
The SEC regulations that govern the trading of restricted stock are outlined under SEC Rule 144, which describes the registration and public trading of restricted stock and the limits on holding periods and volume.
Two variations on restricted stock are restricted stock units and restricted stock awards.
A restricted stock unit is a promise made to an employee by an employer to grant a given number of shares of the company’s stock to the employee at a predetermined time in the future.
The amount of restricted stock that must be declared as income is the stock’s fair market value on the vesting date minus its original exercise price.
What Is Restricted Stock?
Restricted stock, also referred to as restricted stock units, is a type of equity compensation through which a company pays its employees in shares of stock.
The stock is “Restricted” because it is often accompanied by a vesting schedule before the employee has full ownership of the stock.
Your employer may grant you 3,000 shares of restricted stock in an agreement that states you will be fully vested after five years of employment or if you meet specific performance goals.
They are restricted stock units and restricted stock awards.
Restricted Stock Units RSUs are stock ownership as a form of compensation offered to employees and are issued on a defined vesting schedule.
Restricted stock and stock options are some of the more popular equity compensation plans offered by employers.
Restricted Stock Stock Options Restricted stock involves actual shares of stock you are allotted for ownership based on a vesting schedule laid out in the plan details.
Definition, Overview, And Examples
Restricted stock units and restricted stock awards are two of the most popular stock bonus structures for employees.
Restricted stock awards share a lot of similarities with restricted stock units.
One of the features that differentiate restricted stock awards from restricted stock units is that the former comes with voting rights immediately when awarded.
The employee cannot usually redeem restricted stock awards for cash, in contrast to the case with restricted stock units.
Stock options come with a high possibility of becoming worthless, as compared to restricted stock awards.
The amount of restricted stock that an employee is required to declare for tax purposes is the fair market value of the stock, minus the original exercise price.
Employee Stock Ownership PlanAn Employee Stock Ownership Plan refers to an employee benefit plan that gives the employees an ownership stake in the company.
Restricted Stock Units: Everything You Need To Know
A Restricted Stock Unit refers to a grant of a value equal to an amount of a company’s common stock.
What is a Restricted Stock Unit? A Restricted Stock Unit refers to a grant of a value equal to an amount of a company’s common stock.
How Restricted Stock Units Work With an RSU plan, the company offers the employee an economic interest in the company stated as a specific number of shares of company stock.
Stock options give an employee the right to purchase shares of a company’s stock at a stated specific price on or before a specific date, thus allowing the option holder the opportunity to purchase the stock at price below its current value If not, the option will likely expire without being exercised, since the stock option has no value, in practical terms.
A restricted security should not be confused with an RSU. Restricted securities are common stock that become vested over time, regardless of whether they are part of an RSU or not.
Stock grants refer to the issuance of an award, such as a stock option, that is provided to key employees as part of a stock plan.
Restricted stock awarded to employees is a form of stock grant.
Restricted Stock
Restricted stock units have more recently[when?] become popular among venture companies as a hybrid of stock options and restricted stock.
RSUs involve a promise by the employer to grant restricted stock at a specified point in the future, with the general intention of delaying the recognition of income to the employee while maintaining the advantageous accounting treatment of restricted stock.
Under the same accounting standards, awards of restricted stock would result in recognizing compensation cost equal to the fair market value of the restricted stock.
Employees pay income tax on the value of the restricted stock in the year in which it vests, and then pay capital gains tax on any subsequent appreciation or depreciation in the value of the restricted stock in the year in which it is sold.
A grantee of restricted stock may make an “83(b) election” to recognize the income from the restricted stock grant based on the fair market value of the restricted stock at the time of the grant, rather than at the time of vesting.
Restricted stock is generally incorporated into the equity valuation of a company by counting the restricted stock awards as shares that are issued and outstanding.
This approach does not reflect the fact that restricted stock has a lower value than unrestricted stock due to the vesting conditions attached to it, and therefore the market capitalization of a company with restricted stock outstanding may be overstated.

Wood-Plastic Composite
WPCs are also associated with eco-product due to the effective utilization of wood wastes such as planer shavings or sawdust as a raw material replacing wood fibers from fresh-cut trees.
Thus, the term wood polymer composite is used interchangeably with wood plastic composite or natural fiber composite.
Wood reinforced thermoplastic resin composites typically contain approximately 50% wood, although some composites may have very little wood and others as much as 70%. The relatively high bulk density and free-flowing nature of wood flour compared with other forms of wood elements such as fibers or other longer natural fibers and its low cost, familiarity, and availability are attractive to WPC manufacturers.
The major limitation in WPCs manufacturing is related to the natural incompatibility of wood with the polymer matrix that causes poor dispersion of wood in the matrix, resulting in low mechanical properties of the final product.
Shows the WPC profile made from wood fiber reinforced polyolefin composites.
Another method using a modification of wood fiber with amino-group-containing chemicals, such as aminosilane, chitin, and chitosan, was reported successfully to improve the compatibility of the fiber with PVC.Wood and thermoplastic matrix are not the only raw materials used in WPCs manufacturing.
Foamed WPCs are accomplished through a conventional continuous extrusion process using chemical foaming agents or water contained in wood cell walls as a blowing agent.
What Is Wood Plastic Composite?
Wood plastic composite is panel or lumber product made from recycled plastic and small wood particles or fibers.
Wood plastic composites are relatively new products as compared to the long history of natural lumber or traditional wood composites such as particleboard or fiberboard.

One commonly available example of WPCs is the decking lumber that is often better known by its various brand names – e.g., Trex™, ChoiceDek™, Eon™ or SmartDeck™ – or as the generic term “Composite lumber.” Advantages WPCs offer a number of potential benefits.
Wpcinfo.org/ Wood Particle geometry Wood used in WPC manufacturing is in the form of dry particles with a powdery consistency, often called “Wood flour.” In general, the wood waste ‘raw material’ is in the form of sawdust and/or planer shavings.
Wood species: The commonly used wood species for commercial WPC production are pine, maple and oak.
Recent research indicates that the inclusion of wood species with distinctive properties can positively influence the characteristics of the resulting WPC. For example, WPCs made with eastern red cedar and cherry are more resistant to water absorption, swelling and rot than those made with other wood species.
Zinc borate is the most commonly used wood preservative added to WPCs. Fire-retardant chemicals reduce the tendency of the WPCs to burn.
These screws can be parallel, for mixing only, or conical, to increase pressure Compounding: Manufacturing of WPCs can be done using a variety of processes; however, the key to making any WPC is through efficient dispersion of the wood component into the thermoplastic matrix.
Stricter regulations on the use of chemicals in building materials, such as the phasing out of CCAtreated lumber for residential decking and the desire for ‘green’ build- WPC Manufacturing ing materials have also contributed to greater acceptance of WPCs by builders and homeowners.
A Guide To WPC Wood Plastic Composite
Wood plastic composite is a hybrid material composed of natural wood and plastic fiber.
Sawdust from fiber fillers like pulp, peanut hulls, and bamboo are mixed with new or waste plastic powder, from composite plastic materials such as polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene.
Because of the composite’s unique composition, wood plastic composite can be manipulated to assume a wide array of shapes and dimensions, including arched and bent shapes.
As a result of their high cellulose content, wood plastic composites can be treated in a similar fashion as wood, but they are also moisture- and rot-resistant.
Wood plastic composite that consists of polyethylene and wood sawdust tends to be used primarily in building and structural components.
Wood components are generally used in sawdust form or small fibers, and typically comprise between 50 and 70 percent of the final wood plastic composite.
Because of the high cellulose content from the wood, WPC assumes many of the same characteristics of wood and can be subjected to the same processes, including planning, drilling, and sanding.
Wood Plastic Composite
The Terratek® WC line of wood-plastic composites combines the pleasing look of wood with the functionality and manufacturing ease of plastics.
These wood-plastic composites blend fine wood particles with renewable, biodegradable, reclaimed, recycled, or virgin plastic materials to make firm, smooth pellets for convenient handling and further processing.
Terratek WC can contain up to 60 percent wood particles, significantly reducing dependence on petroleum-based plastic materials, while simultaneously promoting the use of recycled wood.
In many applications the plastic materials that are used can be obtained from post-industrial or post-consumer recycling sources, further reducing the need for more plastic resin derived directly from petroleum and increasing the use of reclaimed materials.
Terratek WC wood-plastic composites can be produced from a variety of wood particle types, including maple, oak and pine.
Why plastics manufacturers have nothing to fear by switching to a wood-plastic composite alternative material.

WPC Products – Wood-Plastic Composite Products
Deck profile must be chosen accordingly to required mechanical strength: there are light profile for residential use but there are also heavier profile for commercial or heavy use.
Even if composition of these profile is similar, the wall thickness vary,.
It has been used for outside applications for more than 25 years with excellent results.
Wood polymer composite is a homogenous mixture of wood, polymer and various additives, extruded in various profiles for decking, wall cladding, railings and park furniture.
Traditionally the wood is chosen for decking, flooring, and fencing because of its availability and its least expensive material.
Wood rots and splits as it gets older and due to water and moisture, thus wood needs.
Wood-Plastic Composite
In addition to wood fiber and plastic, WPCs can also contain other ligno-cellulosic and/or inorganic filler materials.
The ratio of wood to plastic in the composite will ultimately determine the melt flow index of the WPC, with larger amounts of wood generally leading to a lower MFI. WPCs do not corrode and are highly resistant to rot, decay, and marine borer attack, though they do absorb water into the wood fibers embedded within the material.
WPCs are often considered a sustainable material because they can be made using recycled plastics and the waste products of the wood industry.
WPC in a sandwich-structured composite form allows for a combination of the benefits of traditional wood polymer composites with the lightness of a sandwich panel technology.
WPC sandwich boards consist of wood polymer composite skins and usually low-density polymer core which leads to a very effective increase of panel’s rigidity.
The types of plastic normally used in WPC formulations have higher fire hazard properties than wood alone, as plastic has a higher chemical heat content and can melt.
The inclusion of plastic as a portion of the composite results in the potential for higher fire hazards in WPCs as compared with wood.

The unique features of composites have enabled designers to formulate advanced systems that could be made only of composite materials.
Assuming uniform strain within the composite: Consider a composite material consisting of two phases, 1 and 2, which possess a similar Poisson ratio but differing Young’s moduli of values E1 and E2. Let us assume that, when the material is elastically distorted, the macroscopic stress and strain are reproduced in a typical unit volume which consists of a single particle of material 2 in a cube of matrix material 1.
In a composite with discontinuous fibres, or one in which the fibres are aligned over a range of directions, equation cannot predict the composite modulus in the nominal fibre direction.

Another advantage of composite material is that it provides flexibility in design because the composites can be molded into complex shapes.
There are many types of composite materials such as carbon-reinforced fiber plastic, glass fiber-reinforced aluminium, composites with carbon nanotubes, and many more.

Composite Material
A composite material is a material which is produced from two or more constituent materials.
Another class of composite materials involve woven fabric composite consisting of longitudinal and transverse laced yarns.
A sandwich-structured composite is a special class of composite material that is fabricated by attaching two thin but stiff skins to a lightweight but thick core.
This can be derived by considering that in the isostrain case, Assuming that the composite has a uniform cross section, the stress on the composite is a weighted average between the two phases, The stresses in the individual phases are given by Hooke’s Law, Combining these equations gives that the overall stress in the composite is Then it can be shown that [edit].
For small values of the stress required to initiate fracture is increased by a factor of−2 due to the increased cross-sectional area of the fibre and reduced force experienced by the fibre, leading to a composite tensile strength of σparallel /cos2 where σparallel is the tensile strength of the composite with fibres aligned parallel with the applied force.
Finally, for large values of transverse matrix failure is the most likely to occur, since the fibres no longer carry the majority of the load. Still, the tensile strength will be greater than for the purely perpendicular orientation, since the force perpendicular to the fibres will decrease by a factor of 1/sin and the area decreases by a factor of 1/sin producing a composite tensile strength of σperp /sin2θ where σperp is the tensile strength of the composite with fibres align perpendicular to the applied force.
The most famous failure of a brittle ceramic matrix composite occurred when the carbon-carbon composite tile on the leading edge of the wing of the Space Shuttle Columbia fractured when impacted during take-off.
Explanation, Examples And Classification
Another reason for the increase in the uses of composite materials, apart from the combined characteristics of materials are properties, such as being less expensive, light in weight, and stronger when compared to common materials.
All these examples of applications of composite materials provide a long connection with the needs of mankind of composite materials.
As understood from the composite material definition, a composite material is made up of two or more constituent materials.
The classification of composite materials depends upon the two types of categories of constituent materials, which are the matrix and the reinforcement.
An optimal combination of a variety of matrix and reinforcement materials is used to make composite materials that impart the required characteristics of composite materials.
Examples of a commercially used matrix material are resin which is a polymer matrix material that can be used for different moulding methodologies depending on the amount of monetary investment.
The making of the composite material explains the nature of the composite material that is obtained from the constituent materials.

European Central Bank
The ECB Governing Council makes monetary policy for the Eurozone and the European Union, administers the foreign exchange reserves of EU member states, engages in foreign exchange operations, and defines the intermediate monetary objectives and key interest rate of the EU. The ECB Executive Board enforces the policies and decisions of the Governing Council, and may direct the national central banks when doing so.
The ECB formally replaced the EMI on 1 June 1998 by virtue of the Treaty on European Union, however it did not exercise its full powers until the introduction of the euro on 1 January 1999, signalling the third stage of EMU. The bank was the final institution needed for EMU, as outlined by the EMU reports of Pierre Werner and President Jacques Delors.
Since 2016, the European Central Bank’s president has further adjusted its communication, by introducing the notion of “Symmetry” in its definition of its target, thus making it clear that the ECB should respond both to inflationary pressure to deflationary pressures.
The NCBs are the sole subscribers to and holders of the capital of the ECB. Today, ECB capital is about €11 billion, which is held by the national central banks of the member states as shareholders.
Quarterly hearings: the Economic and Monetary affairs Committee of the European Parliament organises a hearing with the ECB every quarter, allowing members of parliament to address oral questions to the ECB president.
Appointments: The European Parliament is consulted during the appointment process of executive board members of the ECB. Legal proceedings: the ECB’s own legal personality allows civil society or public institutions to file complaints against the ECB to the Court of Justice of the EU. In 2013, an interinstitutional agreement was reached between the ECB and the European Parliament in the context of the establishment of the ECB’s Banking Supervision.
The debate on the independence of the ECB finds its origins in the preparatory stages of the construction of the EMU. The German government agreed to go ahead if certain crucial guarantees were respected, such as a European Central Bank independent of national governments and shielded from political pressure along the lines of the German central bank.
European Central Bank Definition
The European Central Bank is the central bank responsible for monetary policy of those European Union member countries which have adopted the euro currency.
The ECB Governing Council is the body within the ECB that actually takes decisions on eurozone monetary policy.
The Council consists of six executive board members and the governor of each member’s national central bank.
ECB has a system of rotating voting rights among the national bank governors, as the Governing Council is now too large for all members to vote at each meeting.
The council consists of the six members of the executive board of the ECB, plus the governors of all the national central banks from the 19 euro area countries.
ECB’s Mandate The ECB’s mandate is for price stability and sustainable growth.
The Euro-system comprises the ECB and the national member states’ central banks.
Functions, How Does It Work?
The European Central Bank is the apex bank of the European member countries which monitors the banking and financial functions of all the member countries to maintain the price stability of the European currency, i.e., Euro which is adopted by all the member countries to maintain the price stability and prevent themselves from financial troubles.
The European Central Bank is the central bank of the European countries, which has the single aim of maintaining the price stability of the Euro, which is adopted by all the member states.
The team members are amongst representatives of the member states as decided and agreed mutually.
The Team of ECB consists of 6 Executive members plus the Governors of the central bank of all the member states plus the president and vice-president.
The Governing Council consists of members under the president and vice-president and six persons as members of the executive board and the governors of the member states.
The European Central bank is the controlling bank of all the member states.
Currently, 27 European countries are members of the ECB. The main aim behind establishing the bank is to maintain the price stability of the currency adopted by all the members, i.e., the Euro in the international market.

Central Bank Watch: BOE & ECB Interest Rate Expectations Update
Central Bank Watch Overview:Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has provoked a dramatic pricing in rates markets for both the Bank of England and the European Central Bank over the past week.
Rates markets are discounting the first rate hike from the ECB in September, while the odds of a 50-bps rate hike by the BOE in March have all but evaporated.
Whereas at the start of February focus was on when the BOE and ECB would raise rates, the question has emerged if either central bank will be able to move forward with normalization – at all.
BOE Hike Odds NarrowRussia’s invasion of Ukraine has proved to be an accelerant to the pullback in BOE rate hike odds, initially catalyzed in early-February by BOE Chief Economist Huw Pill.
Bank of England Interest Rate ExpectationsThe combined influence of the Russian invasion plus BOE Chief Economist Pill’s commentary has dashed speculation of a 50-bps rate hike significant.
Back to RealityFor several weeks, we’ve noted that “There still seems to be a disconnect between ECB policymakers and rates markets. Rates markets are expecting at least one rate hike in the first half of 2022, whereas several officials are still suggesting that the ECB will be slow to respond to excess inflationary pressures.” Russia’s invasion of Ukraine may be providing the cover ECB officials need to justify keep their asset purchase program in place through 3Q’22, and interest rates lower for longer; there is a non-zero chance that the EU and US sanctions on the Central Bank of Russia.
EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK INTEREST RATE EXPECTATIONSAccordingly, rate hike odds have taken a significant step backwards over the past week.
European Bank Shares Halt Slide, Russia’S Sberbank Exits Europe
FRANKFURT/LONDON -European bank shares halted their slide on Wednesday after dropping to their lowest level in nearly 11 months on fallout from the Ukraine crisis, which has forced the European arm of Russia’s Sberbank to close.
The move by Russia’s biggest lender seemed inevitable after its European arm was closed by order of the European Central Bank.
An index of leading European bank stocks was up 1.39% on Wednesday, erasing early losses that came on top of a 5.6% drop on Tuesday and 4.5% on Monday.
Austria’s Raiffeisen Bank International, which has operated in Russia since the collapse of the Soviet Union thirty years ago, has been one of the biggest fallers so far this week.
The bank is exploring leaving Russia, two people with knowledge of the matter told Reuters, a move that would make it the first European bank to do so since Moscow’s Ukraine invasion.
The capital position of Hungary’s OTP Bank, central Europe’s largest independent lender, is excellent and the bank can withstand further possible market shocks in Russia and Ukraine, Hungary’s central bank said in an emailed reply to Reuters.
The move is one of the first reported instances of a bank in the Middle East halting ties to Russia and underscores growing global nervousness about falling foul of Western sanctions.
Russia’S Largest Bank Withdraws From European Market
Russia’s Sberbank is withdrawing from the European market after several of its banking subsidiaries risked collapse as depositors rushed to withdraw their money in response to sanctions leveled against Russia’s largest bank.
Sberbank Russia PJSC said in a statement Wednesday that its “Subsidiary banks have faced an exceptional outflow of funds and a number of safety concerns regarding its employees and offices.”
Sberbank’s retrenchment follows efforts by Western governments to cut several Russian banks from the global financial system.
At the same time, Russia’s central bank hobbled Sberbank’s ability to support its European subsidiaries by preventing banks from providing the units with liquidity.
On Monday, the European Central Bank had already highlighted the risks Sberbank’s European units faced, warning that Sberbank Europe, based in Austria, and its subsidiaries in Croatia and Slovenia had been deemed failing or likely to fail.
Europe’s Single Resolution Board, which is responsible for ensuring the orderly unwinding of failing financial institutions, said Sberbank’s subsidiaries in Croatia and Slovenia were sold to ensure the financial stability of the banks.
The bank has enough assets to execute payments to all of its depositors, Sberbank said.

8.1.5 Fourier transform infrared spectroscopyFourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
FTIR method is used to obtain the infrared spectrum of transmission or absorption of a fuel sample.
For FTIR analysis, the polymer was dissolved in chloroform and layered on a NaCl crystal and after evaporation of chloroform, the polymer film was subjected to FTIR. The spectrum of PHB shows peaks at 1724 cm−1 and 1279 cm−1, which corresponds to specific rotations around carbon atoms.
FTIR spectroscopy is a technique used to identify the characteristic functional groups from the spectral bands that allow us to know the conjugation between the nanomaterial and the adsorbed biomolecules.
The sensitivity of FTIR is very high such that a slight variation in absorbance of magnitude 10− 3 can be helpful for interpretation of synthesis of NPs. Recently, attenuated total reflection – FTIR sampling technique makes the method easier as no specific sample preparation is avoided.
4.2.4.2 Fourier transform infrared spectroscopyFourier transform infrared spectroscopy.
Although FTIR can be used for the characterization of dried materials after soaking or after implantation and removal, in situ measurements are hindered by the strong adsorption of water in the infrared region.
Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy
One limitation of this approach is that the variation of refractive index over the wavelength range limits the accuracy of the wavelength calibration.
The result of Fourier transformation is a spectrum of the signal at a series of discrete wavelengths.
With one point per wavelength of a HeNe reference laser at 0.633 μm. the shortest wavelength would be 1.266 μm. Because of aliasing any energy at shorter wavelengths would be interpreted as coming from longer wavelengths and so has to be minimized optically or electronically.
The spectral resolution, i.e. the separation between wavelengths that can be distinguished, is determined by the maximum OPD. The wavelengths used in calculating the Fourier transform are such that an exact number of wavelengths fit into the length of the interferogram from zero to the maximum OPD as this makes their contributions orthogonal.
The wavelength scale is calibrated by a laser beam of known wavelength that passes through the interferometer.
Another minor advantage is less sensitivity to stray light, that is radiation of one wavelength appearing at another wavelength in the spectrum.
The images contain a spectrum for each pixel and can be viewed as maps showing the intensity at any wavelength or combination of wavelengths.
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy probes the vibrational properties of amino acids and cofactors, which are sensitive to minute structural changes.
The lack of specificity of this technique, on the one hand, permits us to probe directly the vibrational properties of almost all the cofactors, amino acid side chains, and of water molecules.
On the other hand, we can use reaction-induced FTIR difference spectroscopy to select vibrations corresponding to single chemical groups involved in a specific reaction.
Various strategies are used to identify the IR signatures of each residue of interest in the resulting reaction-induced FTIR difference spectra.
Isotope labeling, site-directed mutagenesis, hydrogen/deuterium exchange are often used to identify the chemical groups.
Studies on model compounds and the increasing use of theoretical chemistry for normal modes calculations allow us to interpret the IR frequencies in terms of specific structural characteristics of the chemical group or molecule of interest.
This review presents basics of FTIR spectroscopy technique and provides specific important structural and functional information obtained from the analysis of the data from the photosystems, using this method.
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy
Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy is an analytical technique used to identify organic materials.
This technique measures the absorption of infrared radiation by the sample material versus wavelength.
When a material is irradiated with infrared radiation, absorbed IR radiation usually excites molecules into a higher vibrational state.
The signal obtained from the detector is an interferogram, which must be analyzed with a computer using Fourier transforms to obtain a single-beam infrared spectrum.
Qualitative Material Identification – To identify the material being analyzed, the unknown IR absorption spectrum is compared with standard spectra in computer databases or with a spectrum obtained from a known material.
The specificity of these bands allows computerized data searches within reference libraries to identify a material.
The outer 1-10 µm of a material can be analyzed using attenuated total reflectance.
Absorption of infrared radiation brings about changes in molecular vibrations within molecules.
The frequency at which a particular bond absorbs infrared radiation will be different over a range of bonds and modes of vibration depending on atom size, bond length and bond strength.
Infrared absorption only occurs when the incoming infrared photon has sufficient energy for the transition to the next allowed vibration energy state.
Stretching Vibrations Bending vibrations Vibrational Modes 1.Stretching – Vibration or oscillation along the line of the bond.

In infrared spectroscopy, IR radiation is passed through a sample.
Some of the infrared radiation is absorbed by the sample and some of it is passed through.
2 T H E O R Y O F F T – I R Why Infrared Spectroscopy? Infrared spectroscopy has been a workhorse technique for materials analysis in the laboratory for over seventy years.
An infrared spectrum represents a fingerprint of a sample with absorption peaks which correspond to the frequencies of vibrations between the bonds of the atoms making up the material.
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is preferred over dispersive or filter methods of infrared spectral analysis for several reasons: It is a non-destructive technique It provides a precise measurement method which requires no external calibration It can increase speed, collecting a scan every second It can increase sensitivity – one second scans can be co-added together to ratio out random noise It has greater optical throughput It is mechanically simple with only one moving part 3 Why FT-IR? Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometry was developed in order to overcome the limitations encountered with dispersive instruments.
Most interferometers employ a beamsplitter which takes the incoming infrared beam and divides it into two optical beams.
The resulting signal is called an interferogram which has the unique property that every data point which makes up the signal has information about every infrared frequency which comes from the source.

Power Supply
Electronic device that converts or regulates electric energy and supplies it to a load. A power supply is an electrical device that supplies electric power to an electrical load. The main purpose of a power supply is to convert electric current from a source to the correct voltage, current, and frequency to power the load. As a result, power supplies are sometimes referred to as electric power converters.
All power supplies have a power input connection, which receives energy in the form of electric current from a source, and one or more power output or rail connections that deliver current to the load. The source power may come from the electric power grid, such as an electrical outlet, energy storage devices such as batteries or fuel cells, generators or alternators, solar power converters, or another power supply.
An isolated power supply has a power output that is electrically independent of its power input; this is in contrast to other power supplies that share a common connection between power input and output.
An integrated power supply is one that shares a common printed circuit board with its load. An external power supply, AC adapter or power brick, is a power supply located in the load’s AC power cord that plugs into a wall outlet; a wall wart is an external supply integrated with the outlet plug itself.
Switched-mode power supplies are usually regulated, and to keep the output voltage constant, the power supply employs a feedback controller that monitors current drawn by the load. The switching duty cycle increases as power output requirements increase.
The suitability of a particular power supply for an application is determined by various attributes of the power supply, which are typically listed in the power supply’s specification.
A modern computer power supply is a switch-mode power supply that converts AC power from the mains supply, to several DC voltages.

Polymer Matrix Composites: Properties And Applications
Polymer matrix composites are present in almost all aspects of modern life – from gadget components to a vast selection of automotive accessories.
Polymer matrix composites are materials made up of fibres that are embedded in an organic polymer matrix.
Despite these many desirable qualities, polymer matrix composites are limited to service temperatures below 600° F, above which, polymers start to degrade.
During the fabrication and shaping of polymer matrix composites into finished products, often the formation of the material itself is incorporated in the fabrication process.
Protective equipment – Since polymer matrix composites can withstand extreme hot or cold and other hazardous conditions, they are often made as raw materials for bulletproof vests and other armour.
Structural – Polymer matrix composites are used to repair bridges and other construction materials and equipment like booms and cranes.
Edu/37778336/An introduction to polymer matrix composites.
Because the matrix decomposes at high temperatures current PMCs are limited to service temperatures below about 600° F. Experience over the past 15 years with advanced composite structures in military aircraft indicates that reliable PMC structures can be fabricated.
To generate improved materials and to design and manufacture PMCs more cost-effectively, the following needs should be addressed: Research and Development Priorities Unlike most structural ceramics, PMCs have compiled an excellent service record, particularly in military aircraft.
The opportunities for use of PMCs in bridges are considerable: most highway bridges in the United States are over 35 years old, and most railroad bridges are over 70 years old.34 Replacing or refurbishing even a small fraction of these with PMC materials would involve a substantial volume of fiber and resin.
A second need for PMCs use in the construction industry involves the availability of standardized shapes of standard PMC materials to be purchased much the way metal shapes are currently sold for construction use.
To design more efficiently and costeffectively, and to develop improved materials, it will be necessary to understand and model several important aspects of PMCs. Based on the opportunities outlined above, some research and development priorities for PMCs are suggested below, complete and uniform cure, minimize thermal stresses, control resin content, and ensure accurate fiber placement.
Fatigue resistance is a major advantage that PMCs enjoy over metals; however, the traditional models for analyzing fatigue in metals do not apply to PMCs. The risks associated with fatigue failure are likely to increase because of the trend toward use of fibers with higher failure strains, plus the desire to use higher design allowable for existing materials.
A more realistic near-term objective is to understand fatigue mechanisms, and how they are related to the properties of fibers, matrix, interphase, loading, and environment of the PMC. Important topics that have not received adequate attention are the fatigue properties of the reinforcements and matrix resins, and compression fatigue of unidirectional PMCs. In view of the increasing interest in thermoplastics, fatigue of these materials also deserves study.
Polymer Matrix Composites
Generally, the interfacial shear strength between fiber and matrix should be high in order to allow load transfer between fiber and matrix which is essential for enhancement of mechanical performance of PMC. Furthermore, for PMC the Young’s modulus of reinforcing fiber and polymer matrix are as follows: Efiber >> Ematrix.
18.5 Polymer-Matrix CompositesPolymer-matrix composites can be classified based on whether the matrix is a thermoset or a thermoplastic polymer.
Another large sector area where polymer matrix composites are used is in the aerospace industry.
FSW has become a potential candidate for the joining of thermoplastic polymers and polymer matrix composites.
Friction stir welding/processing of polymers and polymer matrix composites.
FSW has been used to join dissimilar materials such as metal to metal, metal to metal matrix composite, metal to polymer, polymer to polymer, and polymer to PMC materials.
An added advantage of using FSW for Polymer Matrix Composites is that the rotating tool additionally performs the task of mixing the reinforcement.
POLYMER MATRIX COMPOSITES Unlike a ceramic matrix composite, in which the reinforcement is used primarily to improve the fracture toughness, the reinforcement in a polymer matrix composite lends strength and stiffness to the relatively weak matrix.
Composite Constituents Matrix The matrix determines the resistance of the composite to most of the degradative processes which eventually cause failure of the structure, including impact damage, delamination, water absorption, chemical attack, and high-temperature creep.
The Army’s Materials Technology Laboratory is currently developing MIL-17, a handbook on advanced composites which will begin to address the questions of how data on composites can be obtained and reported.
Inasmuch as composites are tailored to meet the design requirements of a particular structure, designers must rely on computer models to analyze and predict the behavior of composite structures using a database containing the properties of the resins, fibers, and unidirectional composites.
Nondestructive Evaluation of Polymer Matrix Composites Manufacturing of Polymer Composite Structures Given the many different fibers and matrices from which composites can be made, the subject of PMC manufacturing is an extremely broad one.
Feb. 10, 1986 5 2 built by 1995, has placed the U.S. composite commercial airframe production at between 1 and 2 million pounds in that year.19 l ‘* Photo credit” Hercules, Inc. A modern lightweight fighter incorporating 64 different components-more than 900 pounds of composite structure per airplane.
In the short run, these will be mostly SMC. The next major opportunity for composites in automobiles is in structural components, 21 Two structural components currently in service are the composite drive shaft and leaf spring.
Polymer Matrix Composites [SubsTech]
Polymer Matrix Composite is the material consisting of a polymer matrix combined with a fibrous reinforcing dispersed phase.
Polymer Matrix Composites are very popular due to their low cost and simple fabrication methods.
Use of non-reinforced polymers as structure materials is limited by low level of their mechanical properties: tensile strength of one of the strongest polymers – epoxy resin is 20000 psi.
In addition to relatively low strength, polymer materials possess low impact resistance.
Two types of polymers are used as matrix materials for fabrication composites: Thermosets and Thermoplastics, High Density Polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon, acrylics).
Properties of Polymer Matrix Composites may be estimated by the Rule of Mixtures.
Polymer Matrix Composites are used for manufacturing: secondary load-bearing aerospace structures, boat bodies, canoes, kayaks, automotive parts, radio controlled vehicles, sport goods, bullet-proof vests and other armor parts, brake and clutch linings.
Polymer Matrix Composite
A polymer matrix composite is a composite material composed of a variety of short or continuous fibers bound together by an organic polymer matrix.
In order to take advantage of the exceptional mechanical properties of the nanotubes, the load transfer between the nanotubes and matrix must be very large.
Stress-strain studies of single-walled carbon nanotubes in a polyethylene matrix using molecular dynamics showed that long carbon nanotubes lead to an increase in tensile stiffness and strength due to the large-distance stress transfer and crack propagation prevention.
Aside from size, the interface between the carbon nanotubes and the polymer matrix is of exceptional importance.
In order to achieve better load transfer, a number of different methods have been used to better bond the carbon nanotubes to the matrix by functionalizing the surface of the carbon nanotube with various polymers.
The synthesis of carbon nanotube reinforced PMCs is dependent on the choice of matrix and functionalization of the carbon nanotubes.
While this method is widely used, the sonication can damage the carbon nanotubes, the polymer must be soluble in the solvent of choice, and the rate of evaporation can often lead to undesirable structures like nanotube bundling or polymer voids.
Types Of Polymer Matrix – Coventive Composites
There are many different types of polymers that can be used as a matrix for composite materials.
Notwithstanding the premium for high performance materials, the capital investments required in equipment and tooling are typically higher for thermoplastics than thermosets.
The dominant – and therefore most important – transition in semi-crystalline thermoplastics is the glass transition; above this point the polymer flows significantly and the material can be moulded.
In order for this class of materials to have useful engineering properties, the usage temperature has to be significantly below the glass transition range as there is no crystallinity present that can hold the material in shape.
Amorphous thermoplastics, with the exception of special materials such as ABS, are also usually optically transparent.
The vast majority of thermosetting materials in use for composites applications are fully amorphous and therefore only feature a Tg. It follows that Tg is the defining characteristic, which typically dictates the maximum service temperature of the final composite component.
As the material is constrained by the cross-links, the melting transition represents nowhere near as dramatic a change as would be encountered in thermoplastics.
