Governance, Risk Management, And Compliance Definition

Governance, risk management, and compliance is a relatively new corporate management system that integrates these three crucial functions into the processes of every department within an organization.

GRC is in part a response to the “Silo mentality,” as it has become disparagingly known.

Governance, risk management, and compliance have been key elements of company management for a long time.

The overall purpose of GRC is to reduce risks and costs as well as duplication of effort.

Adopting a GRC System An entire industry has emerged to provide companies with the consulting services necessary to implement a GRC system.

Some highly-regarded software packages, according to CIO.com, include the IBM OpenPage GRC Platform, MetricStream, and Rsam’s Enterprise GRC. The article notes that more affordable and even free GRC software is available, though with fewer features.

As an integrated approach, GRC can mean different things to different businesses.

What Is GRC / Governance, Risk And Compliance?

If Principled Performance is the goal, then integrated GRC is the pathway to get there.

GRC is the integrated collection of capabilities that enable an organization to reliably achieve objectives, address uncertainty and act with integrity.

GRC as an acronym denotes governance, risk, and compliance – but the full story of GRC is so much more than those three words.

The acronym GRC was invented by the OCEG membership as a shorthand reference to the critical capabilities that must work together to achieve Principled Performance – the capabilities that integrate the governance, management and assurance of performance, risk, and compliance activities.

Learn more about GRC It is important to remember that organizations have been governed, and risk and compliance have been managed, for a long time – in this way, GRC is nothing new.

In a forward-thinking organization, GRC is viewed as an integrated collection of all capabilities necessary to support Principled Performance.

Our GRC Maturity Survey finds that disjointed GRC activities cause a number of problems.

Governance, Risk Management And Compliance

To meet an increasing demand for legally trained compliance officers, the UConn School of Law has drawn on its excellence in the fields of compliance and insurance to establish an LLM in Governance, Risk Management and Compliance.

The LLM in Governance, Risk Management and Compliance offers those with a JD or foreign law degree the opportunity to pursue a course of study that provides a strong legal foundation in each branch within the field.

Students can expect to gain competence in the law regarding enterprise risk management and governance.

A curriculum rich in corporate and regulatory governance, financial and insurance-based risk management and compliance will build a legal perspective on each topic.

Students may also take courses in an area in which they wish to specialize.

This well-rounded LLM will prepare graduates to manage legal and regulatory risk within organizations and to exercise sound legal judgement under the pressure of a crisis situation.

The Essential Guide To Governance, Risk Management And Compliance

Governance, Risk Management and Compliance, also known as GRC, is an umbrella term for the way organisations deal with three areas that help them achieve their objectives.

This GRC Guide is here to spell out; the people you need to have involved, what their roles need to be and and the steps you need to take to make GRC strategies and tools work for you.

The simple answer to the question of who needs to be involved in a successful adaptation of GRC is ‘everybody’ as there are elements of governance, risk management and compliance which go from the very top of an organisation down to deep within business units and teams.

From the top down, the benefits of GRC need to be communicated as part of a change management strategy to ensure that everyone has bought into the need and expected benefits.

Risk managers – Any large organisation should already have people at managerial level who are responsible for risk management and their roles in GRC are extensive.

Take stock of your current situation – You have clarified what GRC can mean to your organisation, but another key step is to understand what is currently happening in the fields of governance, risk management and compliance before you change anything.

The process will always be ongoing, meaning that there will always be more to learn, so the steps from this GRC Guide can and should be repeated each time.

Governance, Risk And Compliance

Governance, risk, and compliance provide organizations the confidence and tools they need to operate their businesses without overstepping regulatory bounds.

Too many organizations lack well-defined GRC programs or have the tendency to neglect funding them.

To succeed, organizations must improve resilience and prepare for disruption to remain relevant and deliver value.

The business case for GRC must focus on improving risk visibility, aligning GRC efforts to business priorities, and delivering forward-looking insights to help firms act quickly and decisively.

Governance, Risk Management, And Compliance

GRC is a discipline that aims to synchronize information and activity across governance, and compliance in order to operate more efficiently, enable effective information sharing, more effectively report activities and avoid wasteful overlaps.

Although interpreted differently in various organizations, GRC typically encompasses activities such as corporate governance, enterprise risk management and corporate compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

When reviewed as individual GRC areas, the most common individual headings are considered to be Financial GRC, Operational GRC, WHS GRC, IT GRC, and Legal GRC. Financial GRC relates to the activities that are intended to ensure the correct operation of all financial processes, as well as compliance with any finance-related mandates.

Point solutions to GRC. Integrated GRC solutions attempt to unify the management of these areas, rather than treat them as separate entities.

Domain specific GRC vendors understand the cyclical connection between governance, risk and compliance within a particular area of governance.

“GRC is an integrated, holistic approach to organisation-wide GRC ensuring that an organisation acts ethically correct and in accordance with its risk appetite, internal policies and external regulations through the alignment of strategy, processes, technology and people, thereby improving efficiency and effectiveness.” The authors then translated the definition into a frame of reference for GRC research.

The organisation’s risk appetite, its internal policies and external regulations constitute the rules of GRC. The disciplines, their components and rules are now to be merged in an integrated, holistic and organisation-wide manner – aligned with the operations that are managed and supported through GRC. In applying this approach, organisations long to achieve the objectives: ethically correct behaviour, and improved efficiency and effectiveness of any of the elements involved.

Westbank First Nation

The Westbank First Nation is a self-governing First Nations band in the Okanagan region of British Columbia, Canada, and is one of eight bands that comprise the Okanagan Nation Alliance.

Westbank First Nation is governed by one chief and four councillors, elected every three years by WFN membership.

Westbank reserves were once part of the Okanagan Indian Band until they separated and became an independent band in 1963.

On May 6, 2004, the Westbank First Nation Self-Government Act received royal assent and became law.

Following the enactment of self-government, WFN members developed the Westbank First Nation constitution, which sets out how the community is governed and how it exercises its jurisdiction.

Westbank First Nation’s land base totals 5,340 acres, separated into five land parcels.

Westbank First Nation’s two populated reserves border the westside of Okanagan Lake and are located adjacent to the City of West Kelowna, while the remaining three reserves are located on the east side of Okanagan Lake.

Westbank First Nation To Investigate Alleged Improper Land Sale By Staff Memebers – The Golden Star

Westbank First Nation Chief Christopher Derickson is addressing “Multiple and serious” problems regarding a land transaction identified in a report by a provincial court judge.

Marion Buller found the sale and transfer of WFN owned property in the District of Peachland in 2021 potentially deprived WFN of millions of dollars.

It was sold and transferred by two WFN staff members without the authorization of council.

WFN is looking at options to have the land returned or be appropriately compensated.

One of the staff members is no longer employed by WFN, while the other is on leave, stated Derickson.

“There’s a lot to digest there. Obviously, we’re a close-knit community with only 870 members, so that’s a question that I think I will have a better answer for you in the months to come. But in the meantime, as the government and as an elected official, I have a fiduciary obligation to do what’s in the best interest of this government and community and to work on behalf of members to improve accountability and transparency in the WFN government.”

“A stronger, more transparent more accountable Westbank First Nation government doesn’t just benefit our membership, it benefits non-member residents living on our reserve, it benefits the over 500 businesses doing business on reserve, it benefits our local municipal partners and the province of B.C. So as long as I’m here, I’m going to do everything I can to improve this government to make it more accountable, more transparent.”

RCMP Investigates As Review Finds B.C. First Nation Staff Member Sold Land For 1/3 Its Value

A new report written by retired judge Marion Buller shows how a piece of land owned by the Westbank First Nation was assessed at more than $5 million, but sold for just $1.5 million.

The elected chief of Westbank First Nation is promising swift action, including a criminal investigation, following revelations that a staff member sold a plot of land assessed at more than $5 million for less than a third of its value.

“This land was purportedly sold without valid authorization, and ultimately that purported sale of these lands without an updated appraisal has cost the Nation millions of dollars,” he said.

Buller’s report identifies the staff member responsible for the sale as Raf De Guevara, who was a director of intergovernmental affairs and title and rights for the Nation at the time.

The independent review was prompted by a petition from members of the First Nation who were concerned about how the sale was handled, Derickson said.

The Peachland property at issue in the report was originally Crown land within the Westbank First Nation’s traditional territory, and ownership was transferred to the Nation for $1 in 2011.

Buller outlined a number of other issues with how the sale was handled, including problems with record-keeping, non-compliance with the Nation’s policies about in-camera meetings, a lack of public discussion about the planned development, and the failure of Derickson to act as negotiator during the sale, as required by the Nation’s constitution.

Westbank First Nation Looking To Freeze ‘Improper’ Land Sale, Says Reforms Will Be Implemented

Westbank First Nation says it will be changing its policies following an independent report into an alleged improper land sale.

According to Westbank First Nation, the report was released this week, and it “Identifies multiple, serious problems with the transaction, potentially depriving the Nation of millions of dollars.”

WFN says the sale happened in 2021 and involved two WFN staff members who sold and transferred property in Peachland without council authorization.

“Council has accepted the findings and recommendations contained in the report and is taking immediate action to implement the reforms needed to protect WFN’s ability to self-govern,” the First Nation said in a press release on Friday.

The First Nation says it’s pursuing further civil and criminal investigations into the transaction to either get the land back or get appropriate compensation for it.

Derickson said one employee involved in the sale no longer works at WFN, while the other is on a leave of absence.

“Because our citizens – and in this case, our members or the residents living on our lands, businesses on our lands or those who partner with Westbank First Nation – deserve to see the full picture and deserve an accountable, transparent government.”

Property Around A Peachland Golf Course Development At The Centre Of A WFN Civil And Criminal Investigation

Criminal and civil investigations into why two Westbank First Nation employees were able to purportedly sell nearly 60 hectares of band-owned land in the hills above Peachland are presently underway.

WFN Chief Chris Derickson, in an interview with Castanet News, says those employees, including Raf De Guevara, manager of Inter-Governmental Affairs/Title & Rights, did not have the expressed authority to make the sale.

THE LAWSUIT. The property in question was at one time part of a redevelopment of the former Ponderosa Golf Course as well as a large housing development led by former professional golfer Greg Norman.

The civil lawsuit filed by WFN on Feb. 14 names numbered company 1284464 B.C. Ltd. as a defendant.

WFN had partnered with several companies including Treegroup Development Corp. for the proposed Ponderosa development in Peachland, but the project never came “To fruition as Treegroup was not able to carry out its responsibilities under the project.”

The First Nation claims the defendant knew or should have known the land deal was “Unconscionable” since it required a Band Council resolution authorizing the sale.

“The Plaintiff is ready, willing, and able to return the monies paid by the Defendant under the Purported Agreement back to the Defendant,” the claim states.

WFN Embraces Need For Systematic Change From Land Sale Report

Presented her report on the purported sale and transfer of Westbank First Nation lands in the District of Peachland, BC. The Report identifies multiple, serious problems with the transaction, potentially depriving the Nation of millions of dollars.

The Report found that the Peachland Property was purportedly sold and transferred in 2021 by two WFN staff members without authorization of Council.

WFN is pursuing further civil and criminal investigations into the transaction to either get the land back or appropriate compensation for it.

The Report identified governance gaps and practices that need to be addressed immediately.

WFN Council have directed senior staff to begin implementation and report progress to Members on a regular basis.

“We are addressing the root causes of the problems. We are also assembling a Reform Advisory Committee of governance experts and members to advise on reform efforts to implement the recommendations in the Report and help strengthen the self-government of our Nation,” states WFN Chief Christopher Derickson.

“Our members deserve accountability, transparency, and a government that protects their interests. We recognize that we cannot do it alone and will be leaning on our members and partners for their support as we work diligently to implement the recommendations. We need to work together to put our Nation on the right path to a better future for Members.”

First Nations In Canada

The first part of this text -“Early First Nations”- presents a brief overview of the distinctive cultures of the six main geographic groups of early First Nations in Canada.

Today the Government of Canada is working in partnership with First Nations in this new era of reconciliation to build stronger First Nations communities.

For the purposes of studying traditional First Nations cultures, historians have therefore tended to group First Nations in Canada according to the six main geographic areas of the country as it exists today.

The six groups were: Woodland First Nations, who lived in dense boreal forest in the eastern part of the country; Iroquoian First Nations, who inhabited the southernmost area, a fertile land suitable for planting corn, beans and squash; Plains First Nations, who lived on the grasslands of the Prairies; Plateau First Nations, whose geography ranged from semi-desert conditions in the south to high mountains and dense forest in the north; Pacific Coast First Nations, who had access to abundant salmon and shellfish and the gigantic red cedar for building huge houses; and the First Nations of the Mackenzie and Yukon River Basins, whose harsh environment consisted of dark forests, barren lands and the swampy terrain known as muskeg.

The social organization of several Plains First Nations was influenced by their neighbours and trading partners-the First Nations of the Pacific Coast.

Despite decades of difficult and painful living conditions for First Nations under the restrictive regulations of the , many First Nations answered the call to arms during both World Wars and the Korean War.

Special grants for training First Nations teachers, traditional language classes and lessons in First Nations history and culture helped strengthen these new education systems.

The Canadian Encyclopedia

“First Nations” should be used exclusively as a general term, as community members are more likely to define themselves as members of specific nations, or communities within those nations.

A Mohawk person from Akwesasne who is a member of the Bear clan may choose any number of identifiers, which would all be more accurate than simply “First Nations person” “Indigenous.” When discussing groups of people from differing backgrounds, it is appropriate to use First Nations as a general group name, provided that there are no Inuit or Métis members.

In 1980, hundreds of chiefs met in Ottawa and used “First Nations” for the first time in their Declaration of the First Nations.

In 1982, the National Indian Brotherhood became the Assembly of First Nations, the political voice for First Nations people in Canada.

Symbolically, the term elevates First Nations to the status of “First among equals” alongside the English and French as founding nations of Canada.

In July 2019, a report co-authored by the Assembly of First Nations and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives revealed that 47 per cent of the 254,100 status First Nations children in Canada live in poverty.

In Quebec, the poverty rate for First Nations children living on reserves has fallen to 29 per cent, most likely due to the results of agreements between First Nations and the province to share natural resource revenues.

The term ‘Nuu-chah-nulth’ is used to describe fifteen separate but related First Nations, such as the Tla-o-qui-aht First Nations, Ehattesaht First Nation and Hesquiaht First Nation whose traditional home is in the Pacific Northwest on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

According to the Sagas of Icelanders, the first European to see what is now Canada was Bjarni Herjólfsson, who was blown off course en route from Iceland to Greenland in the summer of 985 or 986 CE. The first European explorers and settlers of what is now Canada relied on the First Nations peoples, for resources and trade to sustain a living.

The report engaged First Nations leaders to think of ways to cope with the challenging issues their people were facing, so the First Nations could take their destiny into their own hands.

The associations exist between the Aboriginal peoples and the reigning monarch of Canada; as was stated in the proposed First Nations – Federal Crown Political Accord: “Cooperation will be a cornerstone for partnership between Canada and First Nations, wherein Canada is the short-form reference to Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada”.

The Assembly of First Nations is a body of First Nations leaders in Canada.

Age-standardized rates show that the prevalence of diabetes among First Nations individuals living on-reserve is 17.2%; First Nations individuals living off-reserve is 10.3%; Métis individuals 7.3%; and non-Aboriginal peoples at 5.0%. It is important to note that Aboriginal individuals are generally diagnosed at a younger age than non-Aboriginal individuals, and Aboriginal females experience higher rates of gestational diabetes than non-Aboriginal females.

First Nations

The Lillooet tribe lived in the Lillooet River Valley.

To their east around the Arrow Lakes and the upper Columbia River lived the Lake First Nation.

The third tribe of Athapaskan speakers was the Tahltan, who lived north of the Carrier and controlled the lands of the drainage basin of the upper Stikine River.

North of the Tahltan, in the valley of the upper Lewes River, lived the Tagish, who belonged to the Tlingit language family.

The Tsimshian lived at the mouth of the Skeena River, the Gitksan lived farther inland along the Skeena, and the Nisga’a at the basin of the Nass River.

The Bella Coola lived on the banks of the Dean and Bella Coola rivers and on the fjords into which these rivers flowed.

Twelve principal tribes lived in the vicinity of the Mackenzie and Yukon River basins.

Light Therapy

Light therapy is also known as bright light therapy or phototherapy.

Light therapy used to treat skin conditions such as psoriasis is different from the type of light therapy used for the conditions listed above.

Light therapy may trigger mania in some people with bipolar disorder, so get advice from your doctor before starting light therapy.

Although you don’t need a prescription to buy a light therapy box, it’s best to ask your doctor or mental health provider if light therapy is a good option for you.

If you want to try light therapy for nonseasonal depression or another condition, talk to your doctor about how light therapy can be most effective.

If you simply can’t do light therapy every day, take a day or two off, but monitor your mood and other symptoms – you may have to find a way to fit in light therapy every day.

Keep track of when you start light box therapy in the fall and when you stop in the spring so you know when to start and end your light therapy the following year.

What Is Light Therapy And Is It Right For You?

Light therapy, also known as phototherapy and bright light therapy, is a therapy used to treat a variety of mental health conditions.

Light therapy may also be helpful as a therapy for other forms of depression, sleep disorders, or other conditions.

All it takes is a light therapy box or lamp, which you simply plug in, turn on, and sit close enough to for your eyes and skin to absorb the light for an allotted amount of time.

The machines themselves are typically composed of fluorescent lights on a metal reflective base with a plastic screen on top to diffuse the light and filter out harmful ultraviolet light rays.

Other Options Light therapy devices can come fitted in visor-like shapes that are worn on the head to provide light to the face.

Make Light Therapy a Morning Ritual Schedule your light therapy sessions for the morning.

Look for Low UV Light Not all light therapy products are safe for your skin-read the specifications closely on any lightbox you’re considering buying.

Light Therapy: Can Light Combat Insomnia?

Light therapy is a type of therapy designed to treat certain health conditions through exposure to artificial light.

During a light therapy session, the person sits in front of a specialized device, known as a light therapy box, that emits bright light similar to natural sunlight.

Light therapy is also known as light exposure therapy, circadian light therapy, bright light therapy, or phototherapy.

The light boxes intended for light therapy emit strong light that mimics outdoor light, but without the harmful UV rays.

Specifically, during a light therapy session, your eyes’ retinal cells perceive the light from the light therapy box, affecting certain chemicals in your brain.

One study found that just one 1-hour session of light therapy can significantly reduce depression scores for individuals with SAD. Light therapy can also prevent SAD symptoms in the first place.

There are a wide variety of light therapy products that allow you to easily integrate light therapy sessions into your daily life.

Light Therapy

Light therapy treatments for the skin usually involve exposure to ultraviolet light.

Alternative uses of light for cancer treatment – light box therapy and colored light therapy – are not supported by evidence.

The effectiveness of light therapy for treating seasonal affective disorder may be linked to the fact that light therapy makes up for lost sunlight exposure and resets the body’s internal clock.

Two methods of light therapy, bright light and dawn simulation, have similar success rates in the treatment of SAD. It is possible that response to light therapy for SAD could be season dependent.

A meta-analysis by the Cochrane Collaboration concluded that “For patients suffering from non-seasonal depression, light therapy offers modest though promising antidepressive efficacy.” A 2008 systematic review concluded that “Overall, bright light therapy is an excellent candidate for inclusion into the therapeutic inventory available for the treatment of nonseasonal depression today, as adjuvant therapy to antidepressant medication, or eventually as stand-alone treatment for specific subgroups of depressed patients.” A 2015 review found that supporting evidence for light therapy was limited due to serious methodological flaws.

Light therapy uses either a light box which emits up to 10,000 lux of light at a specified distance, much brighter than a customary lamp, or a lower intensity of specific wavelengths of light from the blue to the green areas of the visible spectrum.

A 1995 study showed that green light therapy at doses of 350 lux produces melatonin suppression and phase shifts equivalent to 10,000 lux white light therapy, but another study published in May 2010 suggests that the blue light often used for SAD treatment should perhaps be replaced by green or white illumination, because of a possible involvement of the cones in melatonin suppression.

Red Light Therapy: Effectiveness, Treatment, And Risks

Red light therapy is a treatment that may help skin, muscle tissue, and other parts of your body heal.

Red light therapy is also called low-level laser therapy, low-power laser therapy, and photobiomodulation.

With red light therapy, you expose your skin to a lamp, device, or laser with a red light.

Red light therapy uses very low levels of heat and doesn’t hurt or burn the skin.

In another small study, people with temporomandibular dysfunction syndrome had less pain, clicking, and jaw tenderness after red light therapy.

One study found red and infrared light therapy cut osteoarthritis-related pain by more than 50%.Tendinitis.

Red light therapy is generally considered safe, even though researchers aren’t exactly sure how and why it works.

Bright Light Therapy: Seasonal Affective Disorder And Beyond

Since the last article on SAD and light therapy published in this journal, the psychiatric nomenclature used to describe the disorder in DSM-5 has remained as a course specifier – “With seasonal pattern” – applied to recurrent major depressive episodes within MDD or BP disorder.

An increasing number of private insurance companies view light therapy with a high intensity light box as “Medically appropriate” for patients who meet the criteria for SAD. Nevertheless, it is unlikely Medicaid will provide coverage for the device in the near future.

Of particular interest, a randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled study of BLT for antepartum depression showed positive results with a response in 81% of patients treated with bright white light versus 46% of patients treated with placebo dim light.

The goal of such research would be to determine optimal conditions for light therapy specific to each disorder, to better predict those disorders that may respond to BLT, and to better understand the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disorders affected by BLT, as well as pathways subserving the positive effects of BLT. Nonetheless, the future of BLT in psychiatry – as an adjunct or as monotherapy – is very bright.

Royal Caribbean Puts World’S Largest Cruise Ship Wonder Of The Seas To Work From Florida

Royal Caribbean puts world’s largest cruise ship Wonder of the Seas to work from Florida – Orlando Sentinel.

FORT LAUDERDALE – The world’s largest cruise ship sailed with its first customers Friday from Port Everglades breaking in the first of two Florida homes planned for the Royal Caribbean vessel this year.

“It’s not a goal for us to say the next ship will be the biggest ship,” said Mark Tamis, Royal Caribbean International’s senior vice president of hotel operations.

Wonder of the Seas is the fifth of six announced Oasis-class ships, coming in at 1,188 feet long, 217 feet wide ship with 18 decks and 2,867 staterooms.

The other four ships in the class each held the title of world’s largest cruise ship starting with Oasis of the Seas in 2008 followed by Allure of the Seas in 2009, Harmony of the Seas in 2016 and Symphony of the Seas in 2018.

Since it’s the biggest, the ship also features the largest space carved out for suites on any Royal vessel with its own lounge, elevated sun deck with plunge pool, bar and loungers plus a private dining experience called Coastal Kitchen.

Wonder of the Seas touts it as the new eighth neighborhood while the other Oasis ships only have seven: Central Park, Boardwalk, Pool & Sports Zone, Entertainment Place, Royal Promenade, Vitality Spa & Fitness Center and Youth Zone.

‘Wonder Of The Seas’- Inside The World’S Largest Cruise Ship

The new cruise liner has surpassed its sister vessel Symphony of the Seas as the world’s biggest cruise ship.

The sheer size and volume of the Wonder of the Seas is somewhat of an engineering marvel, fully fitted and decked with amenities, facilities and luxuries that can seem somewhat misplaced on the high seas.

The Wonder of the Seas, the new largest cruise ship in the world.

The cruise ship also has a full-size basketball court, a Flowrider surf machine, a carousel, and will even house the tallest waterslide at sea.

The ship was built in Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, and was fitted with four bow thrusters each with 7,500 horse power allowing the Wonder of the Seas to cruise at a speed of 22 knots-or 25 miles an hour.

Following its maiden voyage, Wonder of the Seas will also be carrying out voyages along the Mediterranean departing from Barcelona and Rome in May. The ship is one of various new cruise liners that are due to set sail over the course of the year.

Among them is Disney’s first new cruise ship in ten years, the Disney Wish, which is due to be delivered this summer, as well as Silversea Cruises’ luxury ship Silver Dawn-due for its maiden voyage in the spring.

Bangor To Host Cruise Ships For 1st Time In A Decade – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BANGOR, Maine – Bangor is hosting the first cruise ship in a decade following City Council approval of a lease on the riverfront.

American Cruise Lines has started planning its summer schedule and anticipates bringing a cruise ship to Bangor in the next few months, CEO Charles Robertson told the Bangor Daily News.

The City Council agreed to a 20-year lease with the company, which offers trips along the Maine coast, the Hudson River, the Mississippi River and several locations on the West Coast.

It last docked its ships in Bangor about a decade ago.

It’s billed as a small cruise company, meaning its vessels carry fewer than 250 passengers.

Cruise Ship

The common practice in the cruise industry in listing cruise ship transfers and orders is to list the smaller operating company, not the larger holding corporation, as the recipient cruise line of the sale, transfer, or new order.

In other words, Carnival Cruise Line and Holland America Line, for example, are the cruise lines from this common industry practice point of view; whereas Carnival Corporation & plc and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., for example, can be considered holding corporations of cruise lines.

John W. Brown, which formerly operated as part of the United States Merchant Marine during World War II before being converted to a museum ship, still gets underway several times a year for six-hour “Living History Cruises” that take the ship through Baltimore Harbor, down the Patapsco River, and into the Chesapeake Bay, and she is also the largest cruise ship operating under the American flag on the United States East Coast.

Travel to and from the port of departure is usually the passengers’ responsibility, although purchasing a transfer pass from the cruise line for the trip between the airport and cruise terminal will guarantee that the ship will not leave until the passenger is aboard.

The addition of these prefixes and suffixes allows multiple cruise lines to use the same popular ship names while maintaining a unique identifier for each ship.

A cruise ship that is moving from one of these regions to another will commonly operate a repositioning cruise while doing so.

Finding A Cruise Travel Agent

Do you want to cruise close to home from ports like New York, Miami, Galveston or Seattle, or are you willing to fly to Europe for Mediterranean and Baltic sailings? Would you be happier on a large ship – such as Royal Caribbean’s 227,000-ton, 5,479-passenger Harmony of the Seas – or on a smaller, more intimate ship – like Silversea’s 17,400-ton, 298-passenger Silver Wind? Do you prefer a casual and lively vibe, as is found on Carnival Cruise Line, or a more formal atmosphere, such as that of Crystal Cruises?

Your agent will also be able to sort out travel insurance, if required, and will collect payment for the cruise.

Many agents become accredited cruise counselors through CLIA’s Cruise Academy or take courses through the different cruise lines to become more expert at selling their products.

Find out if the travel agent has preferred status with any cruise lines or whether he or she belongs to travel consortiums that would enable him or her to get you better deals, upgrades, etc.

You can book a cruise through a huge travel retailer with branches around the country, a local cruise agency or even a home-based agent who will talk cruising with you at your local coffee shop.

If you’d like to book a cruise through a travel agent, you can pop into a downtown storefront or search for cruise sellers online.

Most cruise lines, including Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line, have some version of a “Find a Travel Agency” search tool on their homepage.

WestJet To Buy Sunwing Amid Turbulent Global Travel Market

The WestJet Group has announced a deal to buy Sunwing Airlines and Sunwing Vacations, bolstering its presence in the holiday tour market as competition among Canadian carriers heats up.

Financial terms of the agreement, which will see Sunwing’s shareholders become equity holders in the WestJet Group, were not disclosed.

Unveiled Wednesday, the deal brings together two highly complementary businesses, “WestJet being a little bit more upmarket and Sunwing being a bit more mass market,” WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech said in an interview.

Under the agreement, WestJet will create a new tour operator unit headed by Sunwing CEO Stephen Hunter that includes Sunwing Vacations and WestJet Vacations as separate brands.

WestJet will also expand to include Sunwing Airlines, adding capacity as it turns seasonally operated aircraft into year-round jets.

Launched in 2005, Toronto-based Sunwing is controlled by the Hunter family – Germany’s TUI Group owns the other 49 per cent of the airline – and Calgary-based WestJet was purchased by Onex Corp. for $3.5 billion in 2019.

About 95 per cent of the seats Sunwing sells are part of a vacation package, versus just five per cent for WestJet, he said.

Post Idea #13: LED circuit

Related Articles – Summarized

LED Circuit

Electrical circuit used to power a LED. In electronics, an LED circuit or LED driver is an electrical circuit used to power a light-emitting diode.

The circuit must provide sufficient current to light the LED at the required brightness, but must limit the current to prevent damaging the LED. The voltage drop across an LED is approximately constant over a wide range of operating current; therefore, a small increase in applied voltage greatly increases the current.

CV drivers are used when the electrical load of the LED circuit is either unknown or fluctuates, for example, a lighting circuit where a variable number of LED lamp fixtures may be installed.

In one configuration, the source voltage must be greater than or equal to the sum of the individual LED voltages; typically the LED voltages add up to around two-thirds of the supply voltage.

In 1969, Hewlett-Packard introduced the HP Model 5082-7000 Numeric Indicator, an early LED display and the first LED device to use integrated circuit technology.

So long as the flicker rate is greater than the human flicker fusion threshold, and the LED is stationary relative to the eye, the LED will appear to be continuously lit.

Often they specify some higher maximum pulsed current that is safe for brief pulses, as long as the LED controller keeps the pulse short enough and then turns off the power to the LED long enough for the LED to cool off.

LED Circuits

We’ve said it before, but it bears repeating: LEDs are strictly DC devices and will not function using AC. When powering an LED, unless the voltage source exactly matches the LED device voltage, a “Limiting” resistor must be used in series with the LED. Without this limiting resistor, the LED would instantly burn out.

The single LED circuit is the building block on which all of our other examples are based.

The supply voltage, the LED device operating voltage, and the LED operating current.

Circuits with multiple LEDs fall into two general categories; parallel-wired circuits, and series-wired circuits.

In a series circuit, the sum of all LED voltages should not exceed 90% of the supply voltage to ensure stable LED light output.

A super-white LED lights the car interior and two Micro red LEDs provide End-of-Train lights.

The interesting thing about series/parallel LED circuits is how easily you can expand the number of lights on a given power source.

LED Bulb Circuit: A Detailed Guide For Circuit Construction

LED bulb circuit is the lighting technology that fast replaces incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lamps due to their high efficiency in energy emission.

In this case we tested many LEDs in series and constructed a simple LED bulb circuit with similar effects to an LED driver circuitry.

A LED light bulb, sometimes referred to as a LED lamp, is an electronic lighting component that uses light-emitting diodes.

As we continue through the article, we will learn how to make a simple high-brightness LED bulb circuit with a diagram illustration.

The diagram above shows the schemed working of a LED bulb circuit.

Step 11: Lastly, now you can test the bulb on 230 Volt AC. How the LED light bulb will work.

In conclusion, we have demonstrated how to design a LED light bulb and how the circuit works.

Simple LED Circuits: Single LED, Series LEDs And Parallel LEDs

In this project, which is more of a tutorial, we will build some simple LED circuits like a simple single LED Circuit, LEDs in series, LEDs in parallel and high power LEDs.

The first circuit in the simple LED Circuits is a single LED Circuit.

ILED is the desired current through the LED. In our simple LED Circuit consisting of a single LED, we have used a 5mm White LED and a power supply of 12V. As per the datasheet of the 5mm White LED, the Forward Voltage of the LED is 3.6V and the Forward Current of the LED is 30mA. Therefore, VS = 12V, VLED = 3.6V and ILED = 30mA. Substituting these values in the above equation, we can calculate the value of Series Resistance as.

The next circuit in the Simple LED Circuits project is connecting LEDs in series.

Since the LEDs are connected in Series, the current through all of them will be the same i.e. 30mA. As three LEDs are connected in series, all the LEDs will have a voltage drop of 3.6V i.e. each LED will have a voltage drop of 3.6V across it.

The final circuit in the simple LED Circuits tutorial is LEDs in Parallel.

For LEDs connected in Parallel, the voltage drop across all the LEDs will be 3.6V. This means that the voltage drop across the Resistor is 8.4V. Now, since the LEDs are connected in parallel, the current required for all the LEDs is equal to three times that of the individual current through the LED. Therefore, the total current in the circuit is 3 * 30mA = 90mA. This current will also flow through the resistor.

Wiring LEDs Correctly: Series & Parallel Circuits Explained

You’ve already read the Wikipedia page about Series and parallel circuits here, maybe a few other Google search results on the subject and are still unclear or wanting more specific information as it pertains to LEDs.

First things first, don’t let electrical circuits and wiring LED components sound daunting or confusing – connecting LEDs correctly can be simple and made easy to understand if you follow this post.

The requirements of a lighting application often dictate what type of circuit can be used, but if given the choice, the most efficient way to run high power LEDs is using a series circuit with a constant current LED driver.

Sometimes the input voltage might not be enough to power multiple LEDs in-series, or maybe there are too many LEDs to have in-series or you just want to limit the cost of LED drivers.

Where a series circuit receives the same current to each LED, a parallel circuit receives the same voltage to each LED and the total current to each LED is the total current output of the driver divided by the number of parallel LEDs.

If we were to use a 2100mA BuckBlock and have three parallel strings of 3 LEDs in-series, then the 2100mA would get divided by three and each series would receive 700mA. The example image shows this set-up.

One thing to keep in mind about running parallel and series/parallel circuits is that if a string or LED burns out, the LED/string will then be cut out of the circuit so the extra current load that was going to that LED will then be distributed to the rest.

Edmunds: Why You Should Order Your Next Car From The Factory – News-Herald

A build-to-order vehicle from the factory ensures you get the exact car, color and option combination that you want and is a little-known method to save time tracking down a vehicle that fits your needs.

So what’s the catch? You’ll need patience for the process, as it can take six to eight weeks for a domestic-built vehicle, roughly three months for a vehicle built overseas, and even longer than that if you want an electric vehicle from lower-volume companies like Tesla, Lucid or Rivian.

Not every automaker will let you order your vehicle when you want to, however.

The only way you can place an order for a specific vehicle is to speak to the fleet manager who will have to put in the request before it’s time to place the quarterly order.

Just visit the automaker’s website, find and configure the vehicle you like, then place your order.

You’ll have to pay a reservation or order fee, then wait for the vehicle to be delivered.

EDMUNDS SAYS: If you can plan ahead and be patient with the process, ordering your next vehicle from the factory can give you more options and potentially a better price than buying off the dealer lot.

What Is A CMMS? Definition, How It Works And Benefits

Asset visibility: Centralized information in the CMMS database enables maintenance managers and teams to almost instantly call up when an asset was purchased, when maintenance was performed, frequency of breakdowns, parts used, efficiency ratings and more.

Maintenance teams can rapidly discover where an asset is, what it needs, who should work on it and when.

Automation: Automating manual tasks such as ordering parts, replenishing MRO inventory, scheduling shifts, compiling information for audits and other administrative duties helps save time, reduce errors, improve productivity and focus teams on maintenance – not administrative – tasks.

Preventive maintenance: CMMS data enables maintenance operations to move from a reactive to a proactive approach, so an advanced asset maintenance strategy can be developed.

Consistency and knowledge transfer: Documentation, repair manuals and media capturing maintenance procedures can be stored in CMMS and associated with corresponding assets.

Compliance management: Compliance audits can be disruptive to maintenance operations and asset-intensive businesses as a whole.

CMMS data makes an audit exponentially easier by generating responses and reports tailored to an audit’s demands.

What Is A CMMS? Computerized Maintenance Management Software

A CMMS – or computerized maintenance management system – is software used for managing and tracking work orders, asset & equipment maintenance management, and scheduling preventive or ongoing maintenance tasks.

Ultimately, a CMMS is an integral part of any maintenance management software toolset helping users manage work orders, track inventory, schedule maintenance operations, and more from one centralized platform in real-time.

CMMS. Computerized maintenance management systems can be considered as dedicated tools created to facilitate asset maintenance management and extend equipment life.

This ultimately helps eliminate all-too-common concerns like unplanned downtime, reactive maintenance practices, cybersecurity threats, emergency breakdowns, and compliance concerns, thereby increasing asset lifecycle, employee productivity and ROI. Who uses CMMS? Computerized Maintenance Management System solutions are used by organizations looking for effective asset and facility maintenance management.

A Computerized Maintenance Management System enables effective facility and maintenance management by centralizing and consolidating all relevant asset information.

A dedicated Computerized Maintenance Management System administrator oversees the implementation and maintenance of a CMMS solution.

The acronym CMMS stands for “Computerized maintenance management system.” As the name suggests, the software was originally designed to digitize – or computerize – maintenance management operations.

Creative Safety Supply

A Computerized Maintenance Management System, or CMMS, is exactly what the name implies-an automated and information centralized program that assists employees with regular preventative maintenance measures and other necessary daily tasks.

In the safety world, there is what is called Total Productive Maintenance, or TPM, that has the added bonus of involving the operator.

Shifting basic maintenance responsibilities to the operator not only gives them a chance to learn something new, but it also frees up the time of actual maintenance workers to handle larger and more complicated tasks that keep machines running smoothly.

Including Total Productive Maintenance in any facility management program, especially CMMS, focuses on reducing waste and clutter within the workplace by integrating equipment maintenance into the manufacturing process.

The key to using preventative maintenance with a new CMMS is to remember that it must be associated with an appropriately classified work order that denotes the time for the maintenance to occur.

Gaining a bit of headway in the art of preventative maintenance will work to eliminate these problems, especially if the maintenance is done at times that do not impede workflow.

The point of preventative maintenance and or Total Productive Maintenance within a CMMS is to catch the problems and immediately fix them before they become a serious problem that leads to bottlenecks and slowdowns, as those are instances where the rate of injury has the potential to skyrocket.

Maintenance Legal Definition Of Maintenance

At Common Law the offense of Champerty and Maintenance arose when a stranger bargained with a party to a legal action, undertaking to pay for the litigation in exchange for a promise of a portion of the recovery.

The award of spousal maintenance is generally determined based on all or some of the following guidelines: the recipient’s financial needs; the payer’s ability to pay; the age and health of the parties; the standard of living the recipient became accustomed to during the marriage; the length of the marriage; each party’s ability to earn and be self-supporting; and the recipient’s nonmonetary contributions to the marriage.

Although maintenance generally takes the form of periodic payments of money directly to the recipient, it can also constitute a payment to a third party to satisfy an obligation of the receiving spouse.

Maintenance may be set in a predetermined amount, such as $1,000 a month, or it may be a fluctuating percentage, such as 25 percent of the payer’s gross income.

In some states the parties may forever waive their right to spousal maintenance by written agreement.

Some states have adopted laws that provide for the termination of maintenance when the payer can show that the recipient is living with another person as if married, but has not remarried because he or she wants to continue to receive maintenance payments.

The support which one person, who is bound by law to do so, gives to another for his living; for example, a father is bound to find maintenance for his children; and a child is required by law to maintain his father or mother when they cannot support themselves, and he has ability to maintain them.

How COVID-19 Continues To Impact Birthing Practices

COVID-19 continues to complicate families’ plans, oftentimes limiting who can be at the hospital and, if a parent tests positive before the delivery, restricting visits to NICUs.

Varying practices across hospitals means pregnant women should be prepared to advocate for themselves, and that hospitals might need to improve their care practices, according to Feldman-Winter.

“Unfortunately, a lot of hospitals had this separation policy, and they never changed that policy,” explained Bartick, who said she continues to hear reports of COVID-positive mothers and their infants being separated.

How long hospitals require COVID-positive parents to isolate before being able to visit the NICU may also vary from 10 to 14 days, Bagwell said.

Whether a hospital is designated as a baby-friendly facility, meaning it has practices that optimize mother-baby bonding, could also impact room-in policies, according to Becky Mannel, clinical assistant professor at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and director of the Oklahoma Breastfeeding Resource Center.

“We still have hospitals that didn’t have that as routine practice, so it’d be really easy for them to use COVID as an excuse to continue doing what they want to do.”

“Some things are definitely changing, but since COVID it’s been really different and painful. People aren’t even able to get into the hospital at all,” Bugg said.

Coronavirus Today: Welcome To A New Era

Congratulations, Los Angeles County! In just a week, we went from the the highest tier in the federal government’s new COVID-19 risk-assessment system to its lowest.

As of Friday afternoon, L.A. County was reporting 111 weekly coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

We’re not the only Southern California county with a “Low” coronavirus community level.

The dawn of L.A. County’s mask-optional era was greeted with a mixture of apprehension and joy.

Barbara Ferrer, the county’s public health director, said Black and Latino residents were more likely to be exposed to the coronavirus at work or at home, and they’re also more likely to have preexisting health conditions that make them more vulnerable when that happens.

It says the number of new coronavirus cases around the world fell 16% last week, and that deaths were down 10%. Even so, about 60,000 people died of COVID-19 last week, and more than 10 million became infected.

The only region to buck the trend was the Western Pacific, which includes China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and more than 30 other countries.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends people seek pediatric care through the age of 21.

The word pediatrics and its cognates mean “Healer of children”; they derive from two Greek words: and .

The Persian philosopher and physician al-Razi published a monograph on pediatrics titled Diseases in Children as well as the first definite description of smallpox as a clinical entity.

The Swedish physician Nils Rosén von Rosenstein is considered to be the founder of modern pediatrics as a medical specialty, while his work The diseases of children, and their remedies is considered to be “The first modern textbook on the subject”.

In 1860, he became “The first dedicated professor of pediatrics in the world.” Pediatrics as a specialized field of medicine continued to develop in the mid-19th century; German physician Abraham Jacobi is known as the father of American pediatrics because of his many contributions to the field.

In 1995, the American Academy of Pediatrics finally acknowledged the Best Interest Standard of a Child as an ethical principle for pediatric decision-making, and it is still being used today.

Future pediatricians will need to attend 4 years of medical school and later do 3 more years of residency training, the first year of which is called “Internship.” After completing the 3 years of residency, physicians are eligible to become certified in pediatrics by passing a rigorous test that deals with medical conditions related to young children.

What Is Pediatrics?

Pediatrics is the branch of medicine dealing with the health and medical care of infants, children, and adolescents from birth up to the age of 18.

The word “Paediatrics” means “Healer of children”; they are derived from two Greek words: and.

A paediatrician is a child’s physician who provides not only medical care for children who are acutely or chronically ill but also preventive health services for healthy children.

A paediatrician manages physical, mental, and emotional well-being of the children under their care at every stage of development, in both sickness and health.

The aims of the study of paediatrics is to reduce infant and child rate of deaths, control the spread of infectious disease, promote healthy lifestyles for a long disease-free life and help ease the problems of children and adolescents with chronic conditions.

Paediatricians need to work closely with other medical specialists and healthcare professionals and subspecialists of paediatrics to help children with problems.

So treating children is not like treating a miniature adult.

Considerations for Use of Upper-Room UVGI The most important locations for UVGI are high-risk indoor settings.

Influenza viruses are more susceptible to UV energy than the bacteria that causes TB. Thus, any upper-room UVGI system installed to help during the COVID-19 pandemic will also be useful against seasonal flu, if it is properly maintained.

Selecting an Upper-Room UVGI System Care should be taken when using UVGI in areas where people could gain access to the UVGI unit’s disinfection zone near the ceiling.

Consult with a reputable UVGI professional who is familiar with NIOSH upper-room UVGI guidelines, to design and install the system.

Numerous laboratory studies, dating back to the 1930s, have been conducted to analyze the efficacy of UVGI for various microorganisms in a range of temperature and humidity conditions; few studies have evaluated the practical 3 application of UVGI in health care buildings, however.

Bacterial inactivation studies using Bacillus Calmette-Gue´rin and Serratia marcescens have estimated the effect of UVGI 47 34 as equivalent to 10-39 ACH. However, another study suggested that UVGI may result in fewer equivalent ACH in the patient-care zone, especially if the mixing of air 48 between zones is insufficient.

Overall, for general ventilation effectiveness, there is little advantage to increasing the effectiveness of the UVGI beyond 4-6 ACH. UVGI is effective when at low ACH, and its efficacy diminishes as ACH increases, because the kill rate is dependent on the duration of exposure to the UV dose.

For UVGI applications in AHU and ductwork, maintenance personnel may be at increased risk even if their exposure time to the UVGI irradiation is short, because they will be in close proximity to the UVGI source.

RESEARCH NEEDS Additional areas of research needed to determine the most effective upper-room UVGI systems include UVGI measurements, air mixing, the effect of low humidity, microbial sensitivity, and testing and validation of upperroom UVGI systems.

Theoretically, CFD modeling can be used to evaluate many of the variables associated with installing an upper-room UVGI system and provide an estimate of the UVGI dose received by droplet nuclei.

For TB, there is ample laboratory and reasonable evidence from animal studies, but the key question remains the relative role of UVGI in the context of the hierarchy of controls to prevent health care-associated TB. Bioterrorism Some of the agents that might be used for bioterrorism, such as anthrax spores, are not very susceptible to UV-C. Because the clinical effectiveness of UV systems may vary, UVGI is not recommended for air management before air recirculation from airborne isolation rooms.

Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation

A UVGI system is designed to expose environments such as water tanks, sealed rooms and forced air systems to germicidal UV. Exposure comes from germicidal lamps that emit germicidal UV at the correct wavelength, thus irradiating the environment.

Ultraviolet disinfection of water is a purely physical, chemical-free process.

The Catskill-Delaware Water Ultraviolet Disinfection Facility, commissioned on 8 October 2013, incorporates a total of 56 energy-efficient UV reactors treating up to 2.2 billion U.S. gallons a day.

Ultraviolet light is now being used to ensure water is free from harmful organisms.

Within the sterilizer, water flows as close as possible to the ultraviolet light source.

The UV lamps for water treatment consist of specialized low-pressure mercury-vapor lamps that produce ultraviolet radiation at 254 nm, or medium-pressure UV lamps that produce a polychromatic output from 200 nm to visible and infrared energy.

For wastewater systems, the NWRI/AwwaRF Ultraviolet Disinfection Guidelines for Drinking Water and Water Reuse protocols are typically used, especially in wastewater reuse applications.

New Standard For Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation

The new standard addresses disinfection uses, potential dangers for humans, effects on materials and plants, and safety measures and precautions.

This new standard focuses on the use of UVGI for disinfection, the potential dangers for humans, potential effects on materials and plants, UVGI technologies, and safety measures and precautions.

“We support more widespread use of UVGI technology as a vital tool in mitigating and preventing the spread of many current and future viruses, as COVID-19 will not likely be our last pandemic,” said David H. Sliney, IES Photobiology Committee Chair in a news release.

This document is “Essential for lighting professionals interested in the use of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation for disinfection, as UVGI can been used to disinfect air, water, and surfaces that are or could be contaminated,” the release says.

Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation: Future Directions For Air Disinfection And Building Applications

Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation for air disinfection applications has relied on low-pressure mercury vapor lamps for decades.

New design requirements have generated the need for alternatives in some uses.

This study describes the current state of UVGI technology and describes future directions for technology development, including the use of lamps produced from nontoxic materials and light-emitting diode lamps.

Important applications are discussed such as the use of ultraviolet germicidal lamps in developing countries, in heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems to improve energy efficiency and indoor air quality, and for whole room disinfection.

Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation, How Effective Is It For Neutralizing A Virus?

First, let’s explain what UVGI is in technical terms; Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation is electromagnetic radiation that can destroy the ability of microorganisms to reproduce by causing photochemical changes of the Pathogens DNA/RNA. Wavelengths in the UVC range are especially damaging to cells because nucleic acids, such as those found in DNA, absorb them.

The effectiveness of Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation bulbs on neutralizing pathogens can be stated as the combination of the intensity level and exposure time.

Case closed?! Not hardly, how effective the UVGI is in a given environment is subject to several factors, including occupancy The result is not a percentage number but a Clean Air Delivery Rate of a particular system, and the reduction in infection probability.

How does one calculate CADR and reduction in infection probability? Fortunately, there is an industry formula that any competent supplier or manufacturer has access to that can provide this information.

A Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation device is used in conjunction with established mitigation protocols such as social distancing, wearing face masks, and increased sanitizing.

If you had 32 people in a room sitting down, such as a lecture hall or restaurant, and you installed a mobile Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation device capable of moving 1200 cfm, what could you expect the result to be? Assuming a known intensity level for the bulbs, the current outside air requirement would be 480 cfm.

The more clean air that is available, whether by natural means, bringing in outdoor air through the ventilation system, or adding Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation to complement existing outside air available, the probability of infection would decrease.

In June 2008, Gates transitioned to a part-time role at Microsoft and full-time work at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the private charitable foundation he and his then-wife, Melinda Gates, established in 2000.

Jerry Pournelle wrote in 1985 when Gates announced Microsoft Excel: “Bill Gates likes the program, not because it’s going to make him a lot of money, but because it’s a neat hack.”

In response to a question about his greatest fear when he looks 50 years into the future, Gates stated: “There’ll be some really bad things that’ll happen in the next 50 or 100 years, but hopefully none of them on the scale of, say, a million people that you didn’t expect to die from a pandemic, or nuclear or bioterrorism.” Gates also identified innovation as the “Real driver of progress” and pronounced that “America’s way better today than it’s ever been.”

Gates and his wife invited Joan Salwen to Seattle to speak about what the family had done, and on December 9, 2010, Bill and Melinda Gates and investor Warren Buffett each signed a commitment they called the “Giving Pledge”, which is a commitment by all three to donate at least half of their wealth, over the course of time, to charity.

In an interview in 2019 Gates completely denied any connection between Epstein and the Gates Foundation or his philanthropy generally.

Melinda French Gates Opens Up About Bill Gates’ Affair, Divorce, Jeffrey Epstein

Melinda French Gates laid out painful details of her divorce from Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates in an interview with Gayle King of CBS News that aired Thursday.

The discussion included talk of an affair Bill Gates acknowledged with a Microsoft employee in 2000.”Well, I certainly believe in forgiveness,” French Gates told King.

French Gates said on the day she wed Bill Gates in 1994, she “Never” thought she’d end up getting divorced.

When King asked if Bill Gates had more than one affair, French Gates said that “Those are questions Bill needs to answer.”

In a statement, Bill Gates said, “I will always be sorry for the pain that I caused Melinda and our family. I admire Melinda and everything she does to improve the lives of women and girls around the world, and I’m grateful for the work we continue to do together at our foundation.”

French Gates said she was no fan of her husband’s friendship with late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Bill Gates said in a statement that his working relationship with Epstein was a “Mistake that I regret deeply. It was a substantial error in judgment.”

Southwest Airlines Has Excellent News For Everyone

Why, many companies are using the onset of March to announce that, yes, this is the month when everyone will go back to the office.

Guess what airlines are saying? Yes, that business travel is back, well, is kind of back, well, will be back, well, is showing concrete signs of backness.

I was moved to paroxysms of excitement when Southwest Airlines offered a veritably bullish expression of business travel’s imminence.

Might not Bill Gates have been unsexily correct when he predicted that, after the pandemic, business travel would sink to less than 50 percent of previous levels?

What’s clear is that the patterns of business have changed and airlines aren’t entirely sure how to address them.

Any sort of rapid return of business travel might be thoroughly thwarted by a lack of pilots and flight attendants.

So is Southwest right? Will businesspeople flock back to travel as they flock back to their offices?

Bill Gates’ Ex-Wife Melinda Says His Relationship With Jeffrey Epstein Hurt Marriage

Bill Gates’ ex-wife, Melinda French Gates, has said the business and technology magnate’s relationship with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein played a role in their divorce.

Almost one year later, French Gates has said in an interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings that Microsoft co-founder Gates’ frequent meetings with disgraced financier Epstein negatively impacted their marriage.

When pressed about Gates’ continued meetings with Epstein despite his wife’s approval, French Gates responded: “Any of the questions remaining about Bill’s relationship… those are for Bill to answer.”

French Gates, who said that she and Gates are “Friendly” though not exactly “Friends” at this point, went on to reveal that a number of factors contributed to the end of her marriage.

“In a statement to Newsweek, Gates said that he”deeply regretted meeting with Epstein, as he also issued an apology to French Gates for the pain he caused her.

Gates said in an August 2021 interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper that it was a “Huge mistake” to have had several meetings with Epstein.

“Bill Gates regrets ever meeting with Epstein and recognizes it was an error in judgment to do so,” Arnold went on.

Melinda French Gates Says She Is ‘Friendly’ But Not Friends With Bill Gates

Melinda French Gates has addressed her divorce from Bill Gates publicly, saying that although she and the Microsoft co-founder are “Friendly at this point”, she is not ready to label her relationship with Gates as “Friends”.

In a recent interview with CBS’s Gayle King, French Gates said multiple factors resulted in the couple’s high-profile divorce last May after 27 years of marriage.

French Gates revealed that she cried numerous times during her marriage, sometimes while lying on the floor.

Speaking about the affair, French Gates said she “Certainly believe[s] in forgiveness, and so I thought we had worked through some of that”.

When asked about one report that claimed Gates had multiple affairs, French Gates said: “You know, I think those are questions Bill needs to answer.”

French Gates said she will keep working with her former husband at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which they co-founded more than 20 years ago.

Last month, French Gates announced she would no longer be channeling the majority of her wealth through the Gates Foundation, one of the world’s largest philanthropic organizations.

PM Marin: Finland’S NATO Membership Decision Needs More Time – Eye On The Arctic

Finland will not rush into a decision about whether to apply to become full members of the military alliance NATO, Prime Minister Sanna Marin said.

While a conclusive decision about joining the military alliance will take time to be reached, and not done with opinion polls or citizens’ initiatives, another decision does seem to have been made in relation to increasing the country’s military budget.

“The decision means that Finland is able to change its opinion about NATO membership if the security environment drastically changes. That has happened. But the issue must still be carefully dealt with, we will not base decisions on an opinion poll,” she said.

The Minister of Education and chair of the Left Alliance party, Li Andersson, echoed Marin’s stance but also added that her party has not ruled out NATO membership.

The Swedish People’s Party has supported the idea of joining NATO but now the party’s chair, justice minister Anna-Maja Henriksson, said a decision must be reached that best protects the country’s security.

The Finns party’s current chair, MP Riikka Purra, said the decision about NATO membership needs to be made carefully, despite the ongoing crisis.

The party leaders also discussed Finland’s defence, Marin told reporters, saying that it was clear that spending on Finland’s defence, internal security and self-sufficiency needs to be increased.

Finland’S Sanna Marin Sorry For Clubbing After COVID Exposure

Sanna Marin, 36, apologized on Facebook on Monday for dancing with friends until about 4 a.m. at Butchers nightclub in Helsinki, where photos reportedly show the world leader not wearing a mask after Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto came down positive for the virus.

Marin and Haavisto had been in close proximity just a day earlier, Bloomberg reported.

In a lengthy Facebook post, Marin said she was told she didn’t need to isolate because she had been fully vaccinated, but missed a text message later Saturday advising her to quarantine until she tested negative.

Marin claimed the mix-up happened because the message advising her to isolate was sent to another phone, which she had left at home.

The prime minister didn’t break any official rules with the late nightclub visit without a mask after the exposure since Finnish authorities do not routinely quarantine fully vaccinated people, Bloomberg reported.

Still, critics from the right-wing Finns party accused Marin of being indifferent and careless by leaving one of her work phones at home, the Independent reported.

Marin told reporters Wednesday she was unaware of guidelines for government ministers and employees to limit social contact immediately after being exposed to the virus, according to the BBC. She again apologized for her actions Wednesday as opposition politicians suggested she should have voluntarily isolated rather than hitting a club, BBC reported.

On that call, which she said was on her parliamentary phone, Marin said she was also instructed that no ministers were being asked to quarantine so long as they had two vaccine doses.

She and her husband went about their evening in Helsinki, according to her Monday Facebook post.

The Prime Minister’s office later said it had sent further text messages on Saturday recommending that they avoid contact with other people.

Marin faced criticism for her evening out after a Finnish gossip magazine published a photo of her in a crowded nightclub.

“I should have used better consideration on Saturday night … I’m really sorry,” she said in her Facebook post.

Marin reiterated the apology Wednesday in an interview with public broadcaster Yle.”I did wrong,” she said.

As well as being head of government, being prime minister may require holding other roles or posts-the prime minister of the United Kingdom, for example, is also First Lord of the Treasury and Minister for the Civil Service.

The head of state appoints a prime minister, of their personal choice: Example: France, where the President has the power to appoint the Prime Minister of their choice, though the National Assembly can force a government to resign, they cannot nominate or appoint a new candidate.

While in practice most prime ministers under the Westminster system are the leaders of the largest party or coalition in parliament, technically the appointment of the prime minister is de jure exercised by the head of state.

The head of state nominates a candidate for prime minister who is then submitted to parliament for approval before appointment as prime minister: Example: Spain, where the King sends a nomination to parliament for approval.

Conversely, some Prime Minister’s Offices incorporate the role of Cabinet, while Australia’s Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet joins them at par.

In the Russian constitution the prime minister is actually titled Chairman of the government while the Irish prime minister is called the Taoiseach, and in Israel he is Rosh HaMemshalah, meaning “Head of the government”.

Income Tax Definition

The term income tax refers to a type of tax that governments impose on income generated by businesses and individuals within their jurisdiction.

Most countries employ a progressive income tax system in which higher-income earners pay a higher tax rate compared to their lower-income counterparts.

Individual Income Tax Individual income tax is also referred to as personal income tax.

The IRS offers a series of income tax deductions and tax credits that taxpayers can make use of to reduce their taxable income.

While a deduction can lower your taxable income and the tax rate that is used to calculate your tax, a tax credit reduces your income tax by giving you a larger refund of your withholding.

Business Income Taxes Businesses also pay income taxes on their earnings; the IRS taxes income from corporations, partnerships, self-employed contractors, and small businesses.

State and Local Income Tax Most U.S. states also levy personal income taxes.

2021-2022 Federal Income Tax Brackets & Tax Rates

There are seven federal tax brackets for the 2021 tax year: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. Your bracket depends on your taxable income and filing status.

These are the rates for taxes due in April 2022.Tax brackets and rates for the 2022 tax year, as well as for 2020 and previous years, are elsewhere on this page.

The United States has a progressive tax system, meaning people with higher taxable incomes pay higher federal income tax rates.

The progressive tax system means that people with higher taxable incomes are subject to higher federal income tax rates, and people with lower taxable incomes are subject to lower federal income tax rates.

Your state might have different brackets, a flat income tax or no income tax at all.

Your marginal tax rate would be 22%. How to get into a lower tax bracket and pay a lower federal income tax rate.

Curious how federal income tax brackets and rates have changed over the years? Take a look back.

Free Income Tax Calculator

Income taxes in the U.S. are calculated based on tax rates that range from 10% to 37%. Taxpayers can lower their tax burden and the amount of taxes they owe by claiming deductions and credits.

The table below shows the tax brackets for the federal income tax, and it reflects the rates for the 2021 tax year, which are the taxes due in early 2022.

Taxable income is always lower than gross income since the U.S. allows taxpayers to deduct certain income from their gross income to determine taxable income.

If your taxable income is zero, that means you do not owe any income tax.

Unlike adjustments and deductions, which apply to your income, tax credits apply to your tax liability, which means the amount of tax that you owe.

If you calculate that you have tax liability of $1,000 based on your taxable income and your tax bracket, and you are eligible for a tax credit of $200, that would reduce your liability to $800. In other words, you would only owe $800 to the federal government.

The Earned Income Tax Credit is a refundable credit for taxpayers with income below a certain level.

Income Tax

An income tax is a tax imposed on individuals or entities in respect of the income or profits earned by them.

Income tax generally is computed as the product of a tax rate times the taxable income.

Some jurisdictions impose the higher of an income tax or a tax on an alternative base or measure of income.

In the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, income tax was reintroduced by Sir Robert Peel by the Income Tax Act 1842.

The amount of income collected via income tax has varied dramatically, from 1% in the early days of US income tax to taxation rates of over 90% during WW2. While tax rules vary widely, there are certain basic principles common to most income tax systems.

In India on the other hand there is a slab rate system, where for income below INR 2.5 lakhs per annum the tax is zero percent, for those with their income in the slab rate of INR 2,50,001 to INR 5,00,000 the tax rate is 5%. In this way the rate goes up with each slab, reaching to 30% tax rate for those with income above INR 15,00,000.

There may arise a situation where the tax payer has to pay tax in one country where he is tax resident and also pay tax to other country where he is nonresident.

Energy Innovation: Policy And Technology

Electrification – replacing technologies and systems that run on fossil fuels with alternatives like electric vehicles, heat pumps, and induction stoves that run on clean electricity – is a proven way to reduce pollution and decarbonize the economy.

Integrating widespread electrification into grid planning and operations can also boost power system reliability and optimize the full benefits of cleaner technologies.

In the building sector, electrification means replacing gas- and oil-fired appliances with highly-efficient electric alternatives, adopting new building codes and amending existing ones, along with other policies to retrofit existing buildings.

Our podcast Electrify This! features electrification experts around the world who are accelerating the transition to 100 percent clean electricity and explores the legislative, regulatory, and market issues surrounding electrification to better understand challenges and identify equitable, scalable solutions.

Scaling up electrification across several sectors requires a multi-faceted approach at the federal, state, and local levels.

Energy Innovation provides original research and analysis to policymakers and regulators to support the rapid, equitable, and affordable electrification of transportation, buildings, and industry.

Our research has gained early traction in California, which is setting policies now that will be the benchmark for ambitious electrification and will provide a leading example for other states, federal policymakers, and internationally.

Electrification is the process of powering by electricity and, in many contexts, the introduction of such power by changing over from an earlier power source.

Broadly speaking, electrification was the build-out of the electricity generation and electric power distribution systems that occurred in Britain, the United States, and other now-developed countries from the mid-1880s until around 1950 and is still in progress in rural areas in some developing countries.

Many electric railways generated their own power and also sold power and operated distribution systems.

On its completion in 1891 it was the first truly modern power station, supplying high-voltage AC power that was then “Stepped down” with transformers for consumer use on each street.

Charles Merz, of the Merz & McLellan consulting partnership, built the Neptune Bank Power Station near Newcastle upon Tyne in 1901, and by 1912 had developed into the largest integrated power system in Europe.

Central station electric power generating provided power more efficiently and at lower cost than small generators.

In addition to air conditioning, which requires electrification and additional power demand, passive building design and urban planning will be needed to ensure cooling needs are met in a sustainable way.

The Cuban government attempted to make energy conservation a priority and established a National Program for the Conservation and Rational Use of Energy as part of the country’s overall economic development plan for 1986-90.

These seemed to do little to help and as the energy crisis worsened in the latter half of 1990, the government added additional measures to reduce energy use.

Especially today, there are many barriers to nuclear energy, but instead use of renewable technologies for domestic energy production could help Cuba create its energy sector independence.

The Gjøa field was electrified from the very outset.

As development operator, Equinor lay a 100 km long cable from Mongstad out to the Gjøa field – the longest alternating current cable in the world at that time.

Production from the Martin Linge field is scheduled to start in 2021.

The Johan Sverdrup field has been electrified by means of power from land, helping ensure record-low emissions from production.

Sverdrup phase 2 will also supply other fields on the Utsira High with power from the shore.

Plans are also being made to enable the Sleipner Field Centre, the Gudrun platform and other connected fields to reduce their emissions through power supply from the Utsira High.

There is work underway to investigate the possibility of supplying power from shore to the Troll B and C platforms and to the Oseberg field.

A New Treatment For Obesity

Wegovy is one of six medications currently approved by the FDA for the long-term treatment of obesity.

Wegovy is the latest in a line of medications, starting with phentermine in 1959, that have achieved FDA approval for the treatment of obesity.

Other medications such as metformin, zonisamide, and other GLP-1 RAs normally used for treating diabetes are often prescribed “Off label” and at the discretion of the prescriber for the treatment of obesity.

Medication treatment of obesity has been a tumultuous arena plagued by many instances of therapeutics being unable to demonstrate sufficient safety data to warrant FDA approval, such as rimonabant; or of adverse effects necessitating market withdrawal, such as lorcaserin, sibutramine, dexfenfluramine, fenfluramine, and the infamous combination medication fen-phen – a drug which, despite its extreme popularity in the 1990s, was never actually granted FDA approval.

The rocky anti-obesity medication landscape often leads to discomfort among clinicians in using the many safe and effective tools we currently have for treating obesity, or worse, hesitance to address obesity as a health concern at all.

The Treat and Reduce Obesity Act is a bill that was first introduced to Congress in 2012 and most recently reintroduced in 2021, with the goal of amending the Medicare Social Security Act to authorize insurance coverage of obesity counseling services and FDA-approved anti-obesity medications.

This remains the largest hurdle in the obesity treatment landscape: gaining sufficient buy-in from government agencies, employers, and insurers by convincing them that medications targeting the most prevalent chronic disease in the US are actually worth paying for.

What Are Anti-Obesity Medications And How Do They Work?: Scott D. Isaacs, MD: Endocrinologist

Here at Atlanta Endocrine Associates, we’ve successfully helped many of our patients in Atlanta, Georgia, lose weight and keep it off with the help of anti-obesity medications.

The resulting medications aren’t magic, so far, but they’ve helped many people take the weight off when nothing else worked.

For short-term weight loss, either to kick you off on a broader weight loss plan or because you need to lose weight quickly for a looming medical issue, phentermine, phendimetrazine, and benzphetamine are the most effective.

For patients who want a long, controlled approach to weight loss, the other drugs on the list above have helped patients lose an average of 5-15% of their body fat in 6-12 months.

Anti-obesity medications are only available to those who are classified as obese with a body mass index of 30 or higher or people with a BMI above 27 and at least one serious health complication because of their weight.

The average weight loss for patients who undergo bariatric surgery is around 33% of initial body weight compared to an average weight loss of 10% with anti-obesity medications and 3-5% with a low-calorie diet and lifestyle modification.

Weight recidivism occurs because reducing body weight triggers adaptive mechanisms that drive weight regain.

New Anti-Obesity Medication Almost Twice As Effective As Most Currently Approved Weight-Loss Drugs

A new anti-obesity medication was shown to be almost twice as effective at helping individuals lose weight than some of the current weight-loss drugs on the market, according to a new landmark study conducted at Northwestern Medicine and other institutions.

Body mass index of 38 kg/m2, participants’ average weight loss was 14.9% compared to 2.4% for the placebo group.

When compared to other weight-management drugs currently on the market, which are proven to help individuals lose between 6 to 11% of their body weight, semaglutide is about 1.5 to two times more effective.

Approximately 70% of study participants reached a weight loss of at least 10% of their baseline body weight, which is clinically relevant, Kushner said.

“A lot of the health concerns we see in people who are struggling with their weight, such as diabetes, high blood pressure or gastroesophageal reflux disease, tend to improve when they reach a weight loss of 10%,” Kushner said.

“It’s the very first time we have a medication that even begins to approach the weight loss people achieve with bariatric surgery,” Kushner said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is currently reviewing its use at a higher dose with the explicit use of helping individuals lose weight.

Post Idea #28: In vitro fertilization

In Vitro Fertilization

Then the fertilized egg or eggs are transferred to a uterus.

If ovulation is infrequent or absent, fewer eggs are available for fertilization.

How many embryos will be transferred? The number of embryos transferred is typically based on age and number of eggs retrieved.

IVF involves several steps – ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, sperm retrieval, fertilization and embryo transfer.

The start of an IVF cycle begins by using synthetic hormones to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs – rather than the single egg that typically develops each month.

Multiple eggs are needed because some eggs won’t fertilize or develop normally after fertilization.

The younger you are, the more likely you are to get pregnant and give birth to a healthy baby using your own eggs during IVF. Women age 41 and older are often counseled to consider using donor eggs during IVF to increase the chances of success.

In Vitro Fertilization: MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia

Normally, an egg and sperm are fertilized inside a woman’s body.

Medicines, called fertility drugs, are given to the woman to boost egg production.

A minor surgery, called follicular aspiration, is done to remove the eggs from the woman’s body.

If a woman does not or cannot produce any eggs, donated eggs may be used.

If the doctor thinks the chance of fertilization is low, the sperm may be directly injected into the egg.

Embryos are placed into the woman’s womb 3 to 5 days after egg retrieval and fertilization.

Fees for a single IVF cycle include costs for medicines, surgery, anesthesia, ultrasounds, blood tests, processing the eggs and sperm, embryo storage, and embryo transfer.

In Vitro Fertilization

The term ‘in vitro’ means outside a living organism as oocytes mature in vivo in the ovary and embryos develop into pregnancy in the uterus, but the oocytes are fertilized in a petri dish.

Women who are unable to produce their own oocytes due to POI or diminished ovarian reserve are able to become pregnant with donor oocytes or donor embryos.

For women with these significant medical issues who desire a biological child, they can undergo IVF with oocyte aspiration, fertilization with their partner’s sperm, but the embryos will be transferred to a gestational carrier.

The downside of the blastocyst stage transfer is that fewer embryos may be available for transfer due to the loss of embryos that did not survive in culture until day 5.

The number of embryos transferred will depend on the embryo stage, embryo quality, maternal age, and patient preference.

A higher number of cleavage stage embryos can be transferred due to the lower likelihood of successful implantation; no more than two embryos in women < 35 years of age, no more than three embryos in women 35 to 37 years of age, no more than four embryos in women 38 to 40 and in women 41 to 42 years of age, five or fewer embryos.

To optimize embryo implantation and a continuing pregnancy, progesterone supplementation is initiated on the day of oocyte retrieval or embryo transfer.

American Pregnancy Assocation

In Vitro Fertilization is an assisted reproductive technology commonly referred to as IVF. IVF is the process of fertilization by extracting eggs, retrieving a sperm sample, and then manually combining an egg and sperm in a laboratory dish.

Multiple eggs are desired because some eggs will not develop or fertilize after retrieval.

Step 2: Eggs are retrieved through a minor surgical procedure that uses ultrasound imaging to guide a hollow needle through the pelvic cavity to remove the eggs.

Step 4: In a process called insemination, the sperm and eggs are mixed together and stored in a laboratory dish to encourage fertilization.

Step 5: The embryos are usually transferred into the woman’s uterus three to five days following egg retrieval and fertilization.

The Mayo Clinic reports that the risk of ectopic pregnancy with IVF is 2-5%. An ectopic pregnancy is when a fertilized egg implants anywhere outside the uterus and is not viable.

A greater number of eggs transferred increases the chances of having a multiples pregnancy.

The Embryo Project Encyclopedia

IVF is a laboratory procedure in which sperm and egg are fertilized outside the body; the term “In vitro” is Latin for “In glass.”

The first attempt at IVF on mammalian eggs was performed by Viennese embryologist Samuel Leopold Schenk in 1878.

The doctors fertilized the eggs in vitro, and waited until the fertilized eggs divided into eight cells before implanting them into the female uterus.

In the successful attempt, Edward and Steptoe transferred a fertilized egg at midnight, the time at which the egg was mature-accidental timing that they later discovered was critical when they realized that diurnal cycles of hormonal levels are crucial to the success of the egg implanting in the wall of the uterus.

Physicians now begin giving women hormone therapy two weeks prior to retrieving the eggs to increase the chance of recovering several healthy, mature eggs.

With ICSI, the physician manually injects a sperm into an egg with a needle to fertilize it.

The number of fertilized eggs physicians place in the uterus in hopes that at least one will implant varies with the physician conducting the procedure.

In Vitro Fertilization: Risks, Success Rate, Procedure, Results

If you think that IVF might make sense for you, carefully assess any treatment center before undergoing the procedure.

The IVF facility will provide you with special instructions to follow the night before and the day of the procedure.

In cases where the man’s sperm count is extremely low or there is poor motility, doctors may combine IVF with a procedure called intracytoplasmic sperm injection.

Once a viable embryo is produced, it is transferred to the uterus using the usual IVF procedure.

Success rates for IVF depend on a number of factors, including the reason for infertility, where you’re having the procedure done, whether eggs are frozen or fresh, whether eggs are donated or are your own, and your age.

A woman’s age is a major factor in the success of IVF for any couple.

The CDC reports that the success rate of IVF is increasing in every age group as the techniques are refined and doctors become more experienced.

What Is In-Vitro-Fertilization?

First, you take medication that makes several of your eggs mature and ready for fertilization.

Then the doctor takes the eggs out of your body and mixes them with sperm in a lab, to help the sperm fertilize the eggs.

Once your ovaries have produced enough mature eggs, your doctor removes the eggs from your body.

Egg retrieval is a minor surgical procedure that’s done at your doctor’s office or at a fertility clinic.

The eggs and sperm are stored together in a special container, and fertilization.

As the cells in the fertilized eggs divide and become embryos.

About 3-5 days after the egg retrieval, 1 or more embryos are put into your uterus.

Glucose vs. plasma glucose: Glucose levels in plasma are higher than glucose measurements in whole blood; the difference is about 11% when the hematocrit is normal.

Older blood glucose meters often need to be “Coded” with the lot of test strips used, otherwise, the accuracy of the blood glucose meter may be compromised due to lack of calibration.

There is currently an effort to develop an integrated treatment system with a glucose meter, insulin pump, and wristop controller, as well as an effort to integrate the glucose meter and a cell phone.

Recent advances in cellular data communications technology have enabled the development of glucose meters that directly integrate cellular data transmission capability, enabling the user to both transmit glucose data to the medical caregiver and receive direct guidance from the caregiver on the screen of the glucose meter.

Many glucose meters employ the oxidation of glucose to gluconolactone catalyzed by glucose oxidase.

There is little difference in the management of a glucose of 200 mg/dl compared with 260, but a ±15% error margin at a low glucose concentration brings greater ambiguity with regards to glucose management.

Cam Johnson Banks In 3, NBA-Leading Suns Stun Knicks 115-114

PHOENIX – New York’s Julius Randle yelled at Phoenix’s Cam Johnson, bumped chests with him and then shoved him again for good measure.

Johnson responded with a brilliant fourth quarter after Randle was ejected, banking in a 3-pointer at the buzzer to finish with a career-high 38 points and give the Suns a wild 115-114 victory over the Knicks on Friday night.

A referee separated the two, but then Randle barreled through the ref to shove Johnson again, which earned the ejection.

Johnson said the feud with Randle had been brewing over the course of multiple games between the teams.

Johnson took a hard shoulder to the chest from Randle on Friday in the first quarter, which knocked the wind out of him and sent him to the locker room briefly.

New York blew a 14-point lead in Randle’s absence, but Mitchell Robinson’s layup with 15 seconds left gave the Knicks a 113-112 lead. Alec Burks added a free throw to give the Knicks a 114-112 advantage – but missed his second attempt – giving the Suns an opportunity in the final seconds.

That’s when Johnson capped his huge night with his biggest shot, sinking the long 3-pointer after Cam Payne’s drove the court and flipped the ball back to Johnson.

UK Will Speed Up Sanctions Against Russians, Johnson Says

LONDON – Britain will be able to move more quickly to sanction Russian businessmen over President Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine as a result of new legal measures which will be sent to parliament next week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said.

Asked by foreign correspondents in London why Roman Abramovich, the highest-profile Russian businessman in Britain due to his ownership of Chelsea Football Club, had not been sanctioned, Johnson said the government had to move carefully.

“There’s no point saying, yeah, we’re going to go after him, and then you come up against the brick wall of lawyers. So we have to get it right. We’re also trying not to just make this about one individual,” Johnson added.

Britain has been criticised for not moving as quickly with sanctions against individuals as the European Union, the United States and Canada.

Johnson said amendments to Britain’s economic crimes legislation due to be presented to parliament on Monday would help the government act with more speed.

“Top line of what our package on Monday will do is that the measures that you have against individual oligarchs in Europe will essentially allow us to catch them too,” he said.

Britain on Thursday sanctioned two more Russians – industrialist Alisher Usmanov and former deputy prime minister Igor Shuvalov.

5 Takeaways From Suns’ Stunner Over Knicks On Cam Johnson Buzzer Bank 3

Cam Johnson thought he should’ve kept the ball when Phoenix tried to force overtime against Utah last week.

Johnson scored a career-high 38 points with his final 3 connecting off glass at the buzzer to give the Suns an 115-114 comeback stunner over New York before a sellout crowd of 17,071 at Footprint Center that lost its minds in jubilation afterward.

Here are five takeaways from Friday’s thriller that took an emotional turn when Johnson and Julius Randle got into it late in the third with New York up 10 points.

Johnson picked up a technical, but stayed in the game and led the Suns to victory in matching the number of wins they had all last season in a 72-game season.

Seeing Johnson as he passed to him, Payne thought, well, let’s give Johnson another shot.

Shooting 11-of-16 from the field, 9-of-12 on 3s, Johnson said it felt good on the release, but admitted he didn’t call bank.

Blocking Payne’s late layup attempt, Robinson would’ve been the hero had Johnson missed that 3 at the buzzer.

Post Idea #36: Glass fiber

Related Articles – Summarized

ScienceDirect Topics

Protection of the glass fiber filaments from breakage or disintegration is an important issue either during manufacturing of glass fiber or during composite production.

Applying sizing agent to the glass fiber during manufacturing of fibers causes lubrication of the glass fiber filaments in addition to inhibit static electricity accumulation, adhesion of the fiber filaments together, and adhesion between fiber filaments and polymer matrix of the composites.

New areas of application of glass fiber have been the strengthening of thermoplastics and their use in automobiles, the construction of large vessels to use the nonmagnetic properties of reinforced plastics, and the combination of glass with other fibers in careful engineering applications [2,7-9]. The concept of fibrous reinforcement matrices now covers a wide range of reinforcing materials and organic as well as inorganic matrices.

Glass fiber production can be segmented into three phases: raw material handling, glass melting and refining, and glass fiber forming and finishing, this last phase being slightly different for distinct types of glass fiber production.

Among polymeric fibers, the aramid fibers are the most used; for that reason, in this textbook, only these fibers will be described.

Glass fibers are available in variety of shapes and forms that includes continuous fiber, rovings, staple fiber and chopped strand.

Typically the glass fibers have diameter between 3.8 and 20 µm. Silica-based glass fibers are more common to the industry however, there are other varieties of glass fibers available such as Al2O3, CaO, MgO, Na2O, K2O, Li2O. Table 4.3.

Glass Fiber

Glass fiber is a material consisting of numerous extremely fine fibers of glass.

Glassmakers throughout history have experimented with glass fibers, but mass manufacture of glass fiber was only made possible with the invention of finer machine tooling.

Glass fiber is formed when thin strands of silica-based or other formulation glass are extruded into many fibers with small diameters suitable for textile processing.

The first type of glass used for fiber was soda lime glass or A-glass.

There are two main types of glass fiber manufacture and two main types of glass fiber product.

Glass fiber use has recently seen use in biomedical applications in the assistance of joint replacement where the electric field orientation of short phosphate glass fibers can improve osteogenic qualities through the proliferation of osteoblasts and with improved surface chemistry.

Recycled glass fiber contains up to 40% recycled glass.

Glass Fiber Types Glass fibers fall into two categories, low-cost general-purpose fibers and premium special-purpose fibers.

S-glass, Dglass, A-glass, ECR-glass, ultrapure silica fibers, hollow fibers, and trilobal fibers are special-purpose glass fibers.

A companion data book is available that covers all commercially available highstrength glass fibers including S-glass and, all silica or quartz glass fibers, including Astroquartz and Quartzel.

Boron-free E-glasses have a slightly higher density than boron-containing Eglasses, but the density of both fibers is lower than that of ECR glass, a corrosion-resistant special-purpose fiber.

Special-purpose fibers, which are of commercial significance in the market today, include glass fibers with high corrosion resistance, high strength, with low dielectric constants, high strength fibers, and pure silica or quartz fibers, which can be used at ultrahigh temperatures.

Others special-purpose fibers include A-glass, C-glass, hollow fibers, bicomponent fibers, and trilobal fibers.

For very different reasons, ultrapure silica fibers, hollow E-glass fibers, S-glass, and other high-temperature fibers have lower dielectric constants than solid E-glass.

Glass Fiber Types Used In Structural FRP Reinforcement

Glass fiber is by far the most predominant fiber used in the reinforced polymer industry and among the most versatile.

Although melting glass and drawing into fibers is an ancient technique, long continuous fiber drawn from glass was introduced in the 1930’s by Owens-Corning as glass wool and given the popular name fiberglass.

Fibers made from glass are manufactured in many varieties for specific uses.

A-glass or soda lime glass is the predominate glass used for containers and windowpanes.

R-glass – A reinforcement glass made with calcium aluminosilicates used where higher strength and acid corrosion resistance is needed.

S-2 glass – Glass similar to, but with somewhat improved properties with, S-glass.

Glass composites are used where the higher stiffness of carbon or aramid fibers are not required and do not need the high chemical resistance of basalt fibers.

Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.comMarch 4 – Pfizer Canada was recalling blood pressure drug Accuretic due to the presence of a potential cancer-causing impurity called N-nitroso-quinapril, the Canadian health regulator said on Friday.

Long-term exposure to N-nitroso-quinapril at a level above what is considered acceptable may increase the risk of cancer, Health Canada said, adding there is no immediate risk with temporary use of Accuretic.

Patients can continue to take their medication as prescribed and do not need to return the drug to their pharmacy, the agency said, but asked patients to consider alternatives.

Health Canada Issues Two Recalls For Pfizer Blood Pressure Drugs Over Impurity – Endpoints News

Health Canada issues two recalls for Pfizer blood pressure drugs over impurity – Endpoints News Health Canada issues two recalls for Pfizer blood pressure drugs over impurity.

Last year, Pfizer stopped distribution of megablockbuster smoking cessation drug Chantix over an increased level of carcinogenic nitrosamines.

Now, two of the Big Pharma’s blood pressure drugs have been recalled in Canada this week after Canada’s health authority found levels of a type of nitrosamine too high to be allowed in the drugs.

Pfizer Canada recalled all 8 lots of blood pressure drug Accuretic yesterday after higher-than-approved levels of N-nitroso-quinapril were found.

That recall was just two days after the pharma subsidiary recalled 15 lots of Inderal-LA, another blood pressure drug, over similar concerns over nitrosamines.

The regulator said in recall notices for the two drugs that there’s no immediate risk in taking Pfizer’s meds, at least temporarily.

Patients on those drugs should talk to a doctor about treatment alternatives, according to Health Canada.

Pfizer Canada Recalls High Blood Pressure Medication Accuretic

OTTAWA – Pfizer Canada has recalled a prescription drug used to treat high blood pressure but the company and Health Canada are advising people to continue the medication unless told to stop by a doctor.

The recall affects all lots of Accuretic medication in 10/12.

Pfizer says the recall is due to impurities of nitrosamine above the accepted level.

Health Canada says a person taking a drug that contains this impurity at an acceptable level every day for 70 years is not expected to be at increased risk of cancer.

The agency says people may keep using the medication unless a doctor says otherwise, noting that not treating the condition may pose a greater health risk.

Health Canada says to contact a health-care provider to discuss other treatment options.

Accuretic is a prescription drug that contains a combination of quinapril hydrochloride and hydrochlorothiazide, which both lower blood pressure.
