The Toro Company is an American company based in the Minneapolis suburb of Bloomington, Minnesota that designs, manufactures, and markets lawn mowers, snow blowers, and irrigation system supplies for commercial and residential, agricultural, and public sector uses.

In 1948, Toro entered the push mower market, acquiring Whirlwind Corp. They sold push mowers under this name for several years.

Toro discontinued its Wheel Horse models and retired the brand name in 2007.

In 2014, the snowplow and snow removal equipment company Boss Products was purchased by Toro.

On February 15, 2019, Toro announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire privately held The Charles Machine Works, the parent company of Ditch Witch and MTI Equipment and other brands, for $700 million.

The central dogma of molecular biology describes the process in which DNA is transcribed into RNA, which is then translated into protein.

A major milestone in molecular biology was the discovery of the structure of DNA. This work began in 1869 by Friedrich Miescher, a Swiss biochemist who first proposed a structure called nuclein, which we now know to be deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA. He discovered this unique substance by studying the components of pus-filled bandages, and noting the unique properties of the “Phosphorus-containing substances.” Another notable contributor to the DNA model was Phoebus Levene, who proposed the “Polynucleotide model” of DNA in 1919 as a result of his biochemical experiments on yeast.

During 1962-1964, through the use of conditional lethal mutants of a bacterial virus, fundamental advances were made in our understanding of the functions and interactions of the proteins employed in the machinery of DNA replication, DNA repair, DNA recombination, and in the assembly of molecular structures.

The transformed DNA gets attached to the DNA of E.coli and radioactivity is only seen onto the bacteriophage’s DNA. This mutated DNA can be passed to the next generation and the theory of Transduction came into existence.

Molecular cloning is used to isolate and then transfer a DNA sequence of interest into a plasmid vector.

PCR has many applications, including the study of gene expression, the detection of pathogenic microorganisms, the detection of genetic mutations, and the introduction of mutations to DNA. The PCR technique can be used to introduce restriction enzyme sites to ends of DNA molecules, or to mutate particular bases of DNA, the latter is a method referred to as site-directed mutagenesis.

The terms northern, western and eastern blotting are derived from what initially was a molecular biology joke that played on the term Southern blotting, after the technique described by Edwin Southern for the hybridisation of blotted DNA. Patricia Thomas, developer of the RNA blot which then became known as the northern blot, actually didn’t use the term.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University

Kwantlen Polytechnic University is a public degree-granting undergraduate polytechnic university in British Columbia, Canada, with campuses in Surrey, Richmond, Cloverdale, Whalley, and Langley.

In 2008, the provincial government announced its intention to amend the University Act to appoint Kwantlen University College a polytechnic university.

The legislation renaming the university college to university received royal assent on May 29, 2008, and KPU began operation as Kwantlen Polytechnic University on September 1, 2008.

In 2007, Murray Coell, Minister of Advanced Education and Minister responsible for Research and Technology was joined by special advisor Geoff Plant, to release the Campus 2020 report that recommends Kwantlen University College become Kwantlen University.

On April 22, 2008, the provincial government announced its intention to amend the University Act to make Kwantlen a polytechnic university, in recognition of its “Versatility in providing academic, trades and horticultural training.” The legislation renaming the University College to University received royal assent on May 29, 2008.

KPU Tech, formerly known as KPU Cloverdale is the second newest of the five KPU campuses, opening in April 2007.

Athens Pink Boots Society Chapter Launches With Leadership From Terrapin Employees

Terrapin’s Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day is to be held on International Women’s Day, March 8th. “The Pink Boots Society was created to assist, inspire and encourage women and/or non-binary individuals in the fermented and alcoholic beverage industry to advance their careers through education.” – Pink Boots Society mission statement.

Building a chapter in Athens felt like a natural step for Terrapin after the success of our 2021 Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day beer, Light the Way.

The inspiration for forming a Pink Boots chapter in Athens came to fruition when Terrapin Quality Assurance Technician and co-Chapter Leader, Olive Overmoyer, was granted a Pink Boots Society Scholarship to study yeast fermentation.

When the Athens Pink Boots Society Chapter was established in February of 2022, the chapter leadership at Terrapin immediately went to work planning the 2022 Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day, this time with the goal of bringing together as many female and/or non-binary employees of Terrapin as possible.

When it came to creating the beer itself, Overmoyer, Terrapin Quality Assurance Manager, Abbey Vickers, who also serves as the Athens Pink Boots Society Event Coordinator, and Terrapin Brewing Supervisor, Jess Hurd, knew that the malt, the base of the beer, should be something as special as the Pink Boots Collaboration Day hops blend.

Several female employees from Terrapin got the chance to visit Riverbend Malt House to see the custom malt blend germinating, a crucial part of the process where the malt is laid out on the ground after steeping and periodically raked to prevent the active grain bed from becoming too warm and letting the rootlets grow together.

The group from Terrapin had the opportunity to not just see the malt that will be used in the Pink Boots Collaboration Day brew, but also got to smell, touch, and even taste the malt.

The Pink Boots Society is a non-profit organization with international membership which supports women working in the brewing profession, especially in creating craft beer.

The Pink Boots Society was inspired by a 2007 cross-country trip taken by Teri Fahrendorf, which she documented on her blog “The Road Brewer.” Fahrendorf had recently left her position as head brewer at Steelhead in Eugene, Oregon, and wanted to connect with new people and learn about differences in regional brewing techniques.

In 2008, Fahrendorf and 22 others met at the Craft Brewers Conference, where they decided to organize into an official organization; later, the Pink Boots Society became a non-profit organization.

As a nod to the original pink boots given to Fahrendorf by her mother-in-law, they called it the Pink Boots Society.

The Pink Boots Society and its members have been involved in many major beer events, including the Great American Beer Festival, Craft Brewers’ Conference, and World Brewing Conference.

The Pink Boots Society has also developed their own annual events, such as Big Boots Brew, Bring Mom Out for a Beer, and the North Carolina chapters’ Biere de Femme Festival.

The day helps raise awareness about women in the brewing industry and also helps raise money for PBS. In 2018, Yakima Chief Hops created a special hop blend to benefit the Pink Boots Society.
