Vicki Hollub
Vicki Hollub is an American businesswoman and mineral engineer.
In 2005, Hollub became involved in leading Occidental’s expansion in the Permian Basin in West Texas and southeastern New Mexico.
From 2012 until 2013 Hollub was executive vice president of Occidental’s operations in California.
In May 2015, Occidental’s board of directors selected Hollub to succeed retiring chief executive officer Stephen Chazen, basing their decision on Hollub’s “Strong track record of successfully growing domestic oil and gas business profitably and efficiently.” During a subsequent transition period she was responsible for operations in the Middle East, Latin America and the United States.
Hollub officially became president and CEO of Occidental Petroleum in April 2016, with responsibility for operations, strategy and financial management.
In March 2020 amid a major stock market crash and an international oil crisis that saw the company’s stock price plummet dramatically, a group of activist investors led by Carl Icahn have stated their desire to replace the entire Occidental board of directors, including Hollub.
Icahn wrote an open letter stating his view that Hollub and the board bought Anadarko to save their own jobs, and failed to protect shareholders’ capital when they heavily indebted Occidental by borrowing over $40 billion in order to purchase Anadarko at a “Massive” 65% premium.
Oxy’S Hollub Says More Capital Needed To Sustain Production In 2022
Occidental Petroleum Corp. will need to spend more capital in 2022 to maintain oil production at 2021 levels, CEO Vicki Hollub said.
Oxy expects oil and gas capital expenditures to total $3.2-3.4 billion in 2022, up from $2.41 billion in 2021.
Oxy is targeting flattish oil and gas production at a range of 1.14-1.17 million boe/d in 2022 with a roughly 54.5% oil cut.
“Our 2022 capital plan invests in cash flow longevity while building on the capital intensity leadership we demonstrated in 2021,” Hollub said.
Oxy expects sustaining capital, which it defines as the capital required to sustain production in a $40/bbl West Texas Intermediate oil price environment over a multiyear period, to increase to about $3.2 billion in 2022 from $2.9 billion in 2021.
Oxy is partnering on the facility with developer 1PointFive Inc. through its Oxy Low Carbon Ventures unit.
Hollub said Oxy is “One of only a few oil and gas companies with net-zero goals that are aligned with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5-degree Celsius pathway.”

First Woman CEO Of A Major U.S. Oil Company Says UA Education And Hard Work Key To Success
In 2016, Bessemer native and University of Alabama graduate Vicki Hollub, became the first woman CEO of a major U.S. oil and gas company, Occidental Petroleum.
In 2019, Hollub mesmerized the oil industry when Occidental acquired Anadarko Petroleum Corp., making Occidental the third-largest U.S. oil company.
Hollub graduated in 1981 and was recruited by a fellow Bama alum to work for an oil company called City Service in Jackson, Mississippi.
A year later, the company was bought by Occidental Petroleum.
Before becoming president of CEO of Occidental, she held a variety of positions within the company, including roles in Russia, Venezuela and Ecuador.
In the end, Hollub’s offer was too much for the oil giant and Occidental acquired Anadarko in August 2019.
Hollub said this is the formula that forged her, and she highly recommends that all current and future UA students adhere to if they want to make the most out of their college education and career.
In March, when the American Petroleum Institute announced its support for a tax on carbon dioxide emissions, reactions ranged from outright disbelief to profound suspicion.
The API is the oil and gas industry’s top lobbying group, representing tiny wildcat drillers, giant multinationals like Chevron and Exxon, and everything in between, and it has long been famous for vehement opposition to regulations aimed at curbing climate change.
Now the API is backing market-based solutions like carbon taxes and uniform, industrywide standards for reporting emissions-with the aim of giving its members a predictable set of rules to operate under as they undergo a long-term green transition.
The API is also throwing its weight behind carbon capture and storage, a promising but nascent technology that aims to trap CO2 at its emission sources and sequester it.
It’s a transitional technology that would enable polluters to shrink their atmospheric carbon footprint as they gradually wean themselves from fossil fuels.
Many oil giants are pursuing CCS, but none has gone farther than Occidental.
Under Vicki Hollub’s leadership, Oxy has won federal subsidies for the technology, and is now building air-capture plants that Hollub says will help the company be a “Net-zero” emitter by 2040.
Post Idea #3: Activist shareholder

Overview, Reasons And Forms Of Activism
An activist shareholder is a shareholder of a Corporation.
The main goal of activist shareholders is bringing change within or for the company.
Obtaining the required shareholding can be problematic due to the high costs associated with the move or resistance of other shareholders.
The reasons for the shareholders’ activism may be financial or non-financial.
Although the management of companies generally opposes the submission of shareholder resolutions, this activism method is reasonably effective at engaging the public’s attention.
A proxy vote is a form of voting where a shareholder is not willing or is not able to attend the shareholders’ meeting and delegates their voting power to a representative.
Activist shareholders can also initiate legal action against the company’s management to reach their goals.
Shareholder Activist Definition
A shareholder activist is a person who attempts to use their rights as a shareholder of a publicly-traded corporation to bring about change within or for the corporation.
Shareholder activism is a way that shareholders can influence a corporation’s behavior by exercising their rights as partial owners.
Some of the issues addressed by shareholder activists are for social change, requiring divestment from politically sensitive parts of the world, for example, greater support of workers’ rights and/or more accountability for environmental degradation.
Over the years, shareholder activism has increased in total capital deployed as well as the number of campaigns mounted.
According to the Harvard Law School Forum on Corporate Governance, 2018 was a record year for shareholder activists.
Shareholder activists are also reaching out across borders to conduct campaigns.
Carl Icahn is one of the financial industry’s most notable activist shareholders, along with his work as a businessman, traditional investor, and philanthropist.
Shareholder Activism: Who, What, When, And How?
The purpose of this post is to provide an overview of activism along this spectrum: who the activists are, what they want, when they are likely to approach a company, the tactics most likely to be used, how different types of activism along the spectrum cumulate, and ways that companies can both prepare for and respond to each type of activism.
Evaluate the “Risk factors.” Knowing in advance how an activist might criticize a company allows a company and its board to consider whether to proactively address one or more of the risk factors, which in turn can strengthen its credibility with the company’s overall shareholder base.
Whether the company decides to make changes or not, explaining to the company’s most significant shareholders why decisions have been made will help these shareholders better understand how directors are fulfilling their oversight responsibilities, strengthening their confidence that directors are acting in investors’ best long-term interests.
Depending on the company’s shareholder profile, the company may opt to defer actual execution of this plan until some future event occurs.
In 2013, 72 of the 90 US board seats won by activists were based on voluntary agreements with the company, rather than via a shareholder vote.
Depending on how the company has responded to the activism, the significance of any changes, and the perception of the board’s independence and open-mindedness, the company may again be targeted.
Incorporating the “Prepare” analysis into the company’s ongoing processes, conducting periodic self-assessments for risk factors, and engaging in a tailored and focused shareholder engagement program can enhance the company’s resiliency, strengthening its long-term relationship with investors.
Activist Shareholder
An activist shareholder is a shareholder who uses an equity stake in a corporation to put pressure on its management.
Shareholder activism can take any of several forms: proxy battles, publicity campaigns, shareholder resolutions, litigation, and negotiations with management.
Shareholder activists are making their mark on mergers and acquisitions as well – a 2015 survey of corporate development leaders found that 60% of respondents saw shareholder activism affecting transaction activity in their industry.
The practice of shareholder activism has its roots in the 17th-century Dutch Republic, with pioneering activist shareholders like Isaac Le Maire, a sizeable shareholder of the Dutch East India Company.
These firms use proxy advisory firms such as Institutional Shareholder Services to receive recommendations on how to vote on shareholder proposals.
Shareholder activism can be categorized as “Offensive” or “Defensive”; in the latter case, an existing shareholder attempts to correct some deficiency, while offensive activists build a position with the intention to agitate for change.
The Shareholder Rights Group is a coalition of shareholder proposal advocates.

Researchers have discovered ways to direct stem cells to become specific types of cells, such as directing embryonic stem cells to become heart cells.
Embryonic stem cells might also trigger an immune response in which the recipient’s body attacks the stem cells as foreign invaders, or the stem cells might simply fail to function normally, with unknown consequences.
What Is Stem Cell Therapy?
Stem cell therapy is a form of regenerative medicine designed to repair damaged cells within the body by reducing inflammation and modulating the immune system.
Stem cells can be administered in a variety of fashions; IV Stem Cell Therapy, Intrathecal, Site injections into problem areas.
The therapeutic uses of stem cells as a potential therapy for a variety of diseases has been immensely explored, the number of clinical trials conducted with Mesenchymal Stem Cells has increased exponentially over the past few years.

Current State Of Stem Cell-Based Therapies: An Overview
In spite of the increased amount of publications reporting successful cases of stem cell-based therapies, a major number of clinical trials have not yet acquired full regulatory approvals for validation as stem cell therapies.
Stem cell-based therapies are defined as any treatment for a disease or a medical condition that fundamentally involves the use of any type of viable human stem cells including embryonic stem cells, iPSCs and adult stem cells for autologous and allogeneic therapies.
Currently, some stem cell-based therapies utilizing adult stem cells are clinically available and mainly include bone marrow transplants of hematopoietic stem cells and skin grafts for severe burns.
Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor was administered to induce stem cell mobilization to enrich the stem cell populations.
The ability to bank autologous stem cells at their most potent state for later use is an essential adjuvant to stem cell-based therapies.

FDA Warns About Stem Cell Therapies
The FDA is increasing its oversight and enforcement to protect people from dishonest and unscrupulous stem cell clinics, while continuing to encourage innovation so that the medical industry can properly harness the potential of stem cell products.
The FDA has the authority to regulate stem cell products in the United States.
The FDA has reviewed many stem cell products for use in these studies.
That said, some clinics may inappropriately advertise stem cell clinical trials without submitting an IND. Some clinics also may falsely advertise that FDA review and approval of the stem cell therapy is unnecessary.
These FDA-approved stem cell products are listed on the FDA website.
In March 2017, to further clarify the benefits and risks of stem cell therapy, the FDA published a perspective article in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The FDA will continue to help with the development and licensing of new stem cell therapies where the scientific evidence supports the product’s safety and effectiveness.

What Is A Butterfly Valve And Where It Is Used In Water Supply?
Valve BodyThe valve body fits between the pipe flanges – the most common end connection types being flanged, double lug, and wafer types.
DiscAttached to the valve body is the disc that functions as a gate that stops or throttles fluid flow; it can be considered equivalent to a gate in a gate valve, or a ball in a ball valve.
The construction of a butterfly valve is relatively simple, with the rotation of the valve disc controlling the fluid flow.
With larger butterfly valves, a gearbox is often required as part of the actuation mechanism which reduces the operational torque and simplifies the operation of the valve but comes at the expense of speed.
Low Cost: Owing to their simple design, butterfly valves require less material and are simpler to design and manufacture and are often the more economical choice compared to other valve types.
On the application side, butterfly valves are especially well-suited for the handling of large fluid flows of fluid, such as in water distribution systems and water treatment plants.

Post Idea #6: Value-added tax

Value-Added Tax
VAT is an indirect tax because the person who ultimately pays the tax isn’t necessarily the same person as the one who pays the tax to the tax authorities.
Each VAT-registered company in the chain will charge VAT as a percentage of the selling price, and will reclaim the VAT paid to purchase relevant products and services; the effect is that net VAT is paid on the value added.
The VAT collected by the state from each company is the difference between the VAT on sales and the VAT on purchase of goods and services upon which the product depends, i.e., the net value added by the company.
Sales tax is paid for the full price of the imported commodity, while VAT is expected to be charged only for value added to this commodity by the importer and the reseller.
The Value Added Tax Act, 1991 was enacted that year and VAT started its passage from 10 July 1991.
Besides these rates there are several reduced rates, locally called Truncated Rates, for service sectors ranging from 1.5% to 10%. To increase the productivity of VAT, the Government enacted the Value Added Tax and Supplementary Duty Act of 2012.
There are currently plans to raise the standard VAT rate to 12%. Using indirect subtraction method with invoice to calculate value added tax payable.
Value-Added Tax Definition
A VAT offers advantages over a national sales tax.
Because the VAT only taxes each value addition-not the sale of a product itself-assurance is provided that the same product is not double taxed.
In addition to the fiscal arguments, proponents of a VAT in the United States suggest that replacing the current income tax system with a federal VAT would have other positive effects.
Pro: closing tax loopholes Proponents argue that a VAT would not only greatly simplify the complex federal tax code and increase the efficiency of the Internal Revenue Service but also make it much more difficult to avoid paying taxes.
Pro: a stronger incentive to earn If a VAT supplants U.S. income tax, it eliminates the disincentive-to-succeed complaint levied against progressive tax systems: Citizens get to keep more of the money that they make and are only taxed when purchasing goods.
Con: higher prices Critics note that consumers typically wind up paying higher prices with a VAT. Though the VAT theoretically spreads the tax burden on the added value of a good as it moves through the supply chain from raw material to final product, in practice, the increased costs are typically passed along to the consumer.
In short, lower-income consumers would pay a much higher proportion of their earnings in taxes with a VAT system, according to critics such as the Tax Policy Center.
What Is Value-Added Tax? Definition & Who Pays
A value-added tax is a tax on products or services when sellers add value to them.
Similar to a sales tax or excise tax, consumers pay the VAT tax, which is typically a percentage of the sale price.
If you purchase a pair of shoes for $100, and the value-added tax rate is 20%, you would pay $20 in VAT at the register when you pay for the shoes.
In some countries, VAT is called goods and services tax, or GST.Some countries exclude certain goods or services from the tax.
The European Union requires that an EU country’s VAT rate must be at least 15%. Some things qualify for a reduced rate, which has to be at least 5%.Although businesses may pay value-added tax on the goods and services they buy, they generally get to recoup those payments from the VAT they collect from their customers.
If you visit a country that has a VAT, you might be able to get a refund on the tax you pay when you shop there.

Overview, How To Calculate, Example
To calculate the amount of value added tax that must be paid at each stage, take the VAT amount at the latest stage of production and subtract the VAT that’s already been paid.
A bike manufacturer purchases raw materials for $5.50, which includes a 10% VAT. After completing the manufacturing of the parts, they are purchased by the assembler for $11, which includes a VAT of $1. The manufacturer receives $11, of which he pays $0.50 to the government.
The full $1 VAT is not paid to the government, as the manufacturer will keep the portion of VAT that he already paid to the seller of the raw materials.
Since the manufacturer paid $0.50 in VAT to the seller of the raw materials, he will pay only a VAT of $0.50 to the government.
VAT paid at each stage can be calculated by subtracting the VAT that’s already been charged from the VAT at the latest stage of purchase/production.
As already mentioned, the entire VAT is ultimately passed to the final buyer(s), as consumers at the previous stages of purchase are reimbursed for the VAT they’ve paid.
Critics of VAT argue that, unlike the income tax rate, which varies at different levels of income, VAT is a fixed rate for everyone, and thus the poor end up paying a greater VAT rate than the rich, relative to their respective incomes.
What Is Value-Added Tax?
What is value-added tax? Value-added tax, or VAT, is a common form of consumption tax in many countries assessed incrementally on a variety of goods and services consumers purchase.
Decrease in variation With a tax based on consumption rather than another variable, VAT provides a stable revenue source as a consistent tax.
The amount of tax revenue VAT generates is due to the number of products and services that receive the tax.
This can discourage tax evasion because the physical records prove how much tax a business has to charge for each item based on the value added throughout production.
How does value-added tax work? The value-added tax is a percentage of the sale price.
Visibility The rate of income tax for others may be less visible, meaning that no one except the taxpayer knows the amount of income tax they pay.
Each time a retailer or manufacturer adds value to a product, the government collects tax revenue.
Value-Added Tax: A Guide For Business Owners
According to the Tax Foundation, VAT actually contributed to one-third of the OECD countries’ tax revenue in 2019.
The VAT is a consumption tax because it’s based on, essentially, spending money rather than earning money.
All European countries levy a VAT, according to the Tax Foundation.
A VAT gets added on each time the good or service gains value and trades hands.
The VAT system implements a tax at every level of production.
Everyone who engages in creating the product or service pays a VAT. In contrast, a sales tax only gets implemented at the last stage, when the consumer purchases the product.
Some advocates see a strong benefit for consumers when it comes to VAT. A VAT is generally seen as a regressive tax system because the percentage of the VAT is the same for rich or poor, big corporations or tiny startups.
Calculation, Features & How To Register
One such tax is the value-added tax, read on to know more about it.
Wondering what is value-added tax? Commonly known as VAT, it is a multi-stage tax levied during each stage in the production of products and services involving any sales or purchase.
The multi-stage tax has a provision to collect tax on purchase at every stage and eliminates tax-on-tax.
Since VAT is an indirect tax paid to the state governments, an accurate calculation for a clear and transparent procedure is important.
Here is an example to understand the calculation of this indirect tax.
Any type of tax fraud can be avoided because it is a mule-stage tax levied at each level of the cycle.
For claiming input tax, VAT ensures more accurate invoicing than sales tax.

In the past few years, there has been a considerable interest in developing new uni- and bivariate health inequality measures, in part to address some of the aspects of health such as the bounded nature of many health measures.
For brevity, the authors refer to health variables in what follows, but all methods described in this article can be applied to any variable measuring health, health care use, and health care expenditures.
Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School Of Public Health
Health Economics is an applied field of study that allows for the systematic and rigorous examination of the problems faced in promoting health for all.
By applying economic theories of consumer, producer and social choice, health economics aims to understand the behavior of individuals, health care providers, public and private organizations, and governments in decision-making.
Health economics is used to promote healthy lifestyles and positive health outcomes through the study of health care providers, hospitals and clinics, managed care and public health promotion activities.
The MHS in Global Health Economics degree program in the Department of International Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health uses health economic principals to address global issues such as migration, displaced persons, climate change, vaccine access, injuries, obesity and pandemics.
Health economists apply the theories of production, efficiency, disparities, competition, and regulation to better inform the public and private sector on the most efficient, cost-effective and equitable course of action.
Such research can include the economic evaluation of new technologies, as well as the study of appropriate prices, anti-trust policy, optimal public and private investment and strategic behavior.
Faculty in the Department of International Health are currently conducting research on a wide variety of topics, including the impact of health care, health insurance and preventative services on health lifestyles, as well as providing research and advice to governments around the globe to enable a more effective and equitable allocation of resources.

This paper describes the principles of economics and their application to the promotion, protection and restoration of oral health in populations and the planning, management and delivery of oral health care.
After illustrating the economic determinants of oral health, the demand for oral health care is discussed with particular reference to asymmetric information between patient and provider.
The reasons for the market failure in health care and their implications for efficiency and equity are explained.
We go on to describe how economic evaluation contributes to policies aimed at maximising oral health gains where resources are constrained.
The behavioural aspects of patients´ demand for and dental professionals´ provision of oral health services are discussed.
Finally, we outline methods for planning the dental workforce in ways that reflect system goals.

Health Economics
Health economics is a branch of economics concerned with issues related to efficiency, effectiveness, value and behavior in the production and consumption of health and healthcare.
Externalities arise frequently when considering health and health care, notably in the context of the health impacts as with infectious disease or opioid abuse.
After the Second World War, amid the rapid improvement of the level of medical research technology, the modernization of diagnosis and treatment means and health facilities and equipment, the aging of the population, the sharp increase of chronic diseases, and the improvement of people’s demand for health care and other reasons, medical and health expenses increased significantly.
Research in health economics developed further, and a second academic seminar on health economics was held in the United States in 1962 followed by a third in 1968.
In 1968, the World Health Organization held its first international health economics seminar in Moscow.
The convening of the three meetings showed that health economics had boarded an academic forum as an independent discipline, which also marked the official formation of health economics.
Mental health economics incorporates a vast array of subject matters, ranging from pharmacoeconomics to labor economics and welfare economics.

Getting good care and safe infusion therapy is important in many ways.
For some patients, infusion therapies are keeping them alive and poor quality care could be fatal.
For patients with less life-threatening illnesses, poor quality infusion care can still cause serious complications, like infections and air bubbles.
When relying on health care professionals to provide the infusion, be sure that the organization or individual is licensed, qualified, and experienced with infusion therapy.

All hospitals administer IV/injectable medications as part of their emergency department and inpatient services if they do not have a dedicated facility/department for outpatient infusion services, then we do not consider them to have an Infusion Center.
