Precision Medicine

Patients with a variety of cancers routinely undergo molecular testing as part of patient care, enabling physicians to select treatments that improve chances of survival and reduce exposure to adverse effects.

Precision care will only be as good as the tests that guide diagnosis and treatment.

Next Generation Sequencing tests are capable of rapidly identifying or ‘sequencing’ large sections of a person’s genome and are important advances in the clinical applications of precision medicine.

The FDA is working to ensure the accuracy of NGS tests, so that patients and clinicians can receive accurate and clinically meaningful test results.

The vast amount of information generated through NGS poses novel regulatory issues for the FDA. While current regulatory approaches are appropriate for conventional diagnostics that detect a single disease or condition, these new sequencing techniques contain the equivalent of millions of tests in one.

The final guidance “Use of Public Human Genetic Variant Databases to Support Clinical Validity for Genetic and Genomic-Based In Vitro Diagnostics” allows developers to use data from FDA-recognized public databases of genetic variants to help support a test’s clinical validity and outlines how database administrators can seek recognition for their databases if they meet certain quality recommendations.

The FDA created precisionFDA, a cloud-based community research and development portal that engages users across the world to share data and tools to test, pilot, and validate existing and new bioinformatics approaches to NGS processing.

Precision Health: Improving Health For Each Of Us And All Of Us

Your genes, behaviors, and environment are all factors that affect your health.

The goal of precision health is to protect your health by measuring these factors and acting on them.

You might have heard the terms “Precision medicine” and “Precision health” and wondered how they relate to you.

Precision medicine, also called personalized medicine, helps your doctor find your unique disease risks and treatments that will work best for you.

Precision health is broader-it includes precision medicine but also approaches that occur outside the setting of a doctor’s office or hospital, such as disease prevention and health promotion activities.

Precision health involves approaches that everyone can do on their own to protect their health as well as steps that public health can take.

Let’s explore how precision health approaches can better predict, prevent, treat, and manage disease for you and your family.

What Is Precision Medicine?

Print 2017 Oct. The term “Precision medicine” has become very popular over recent years, fuelled by scientific as well as political perspectives.

Despite its popularity, its exact meaning, and how it is different from other popular terms such as “Stratified medicine”, “Targeted therapy” or “Deep phenotyping” remains unclear.

Commonly applied definitions focus on the stratification of patients, sometimes referred to as a novel taxonomy, and this is derived using large-scale data including clinical, lifestyle, genetic and further biomarker information, thus going beyond the classical “Signs-and-symptoms” approach.

While these aspects are relevant, this description leaves open a number of questions.

When does precision medicine begin? In which way does the stratification of patients translate into better healthcare? And can precision medicine be viewed as the end-point of a novel stratification of patients, as implied, or is it rather a greater whole? To clarify this, the aim of this paper is to provide a more comprehensive definition that focuses on precision medicine as a process.

It will be shown that this proposed framework incorporates the derivation of novel taxonomies and their role in healthcare as part of the cycle, but also covers related terms.

Precision Medicine

Precision medicine is a medical model that proposes the customization of healthcare, with medical decisions, treatments, practices, or products being tailored to a subgroup of patients, instead of a one‐drug‐fits‐all model.

Precision medicine often involves the application of panomic analysis and systems biology to analyze the cause of an individual patient’s disease at the molecular level and then to utilize targeted treatments to address that individual patient’s disease process.

The branch of precision medicine that addresses cancer is referred to as “Precision oncology”.

The field of precision medicine that is related to psychiatric disorders and mental health is called “Precision psychiatry.”

As the exposome is a common concept of epidemiology, precision medicine is intertwined with molecular pathological epidemiology, which is capable of identifying potential biomarkers for precision medicine.

The Mission Statement of the Precision Medicine Initiative read: “To enable a new era of medicine through research, technology, and policies that empower patients, researchers, and providers to work together toward development of individualized treatments”.

Precision medicine helps health care providers better understand the many things-including environment, lifestyle, and heredity-that play a role in a patient’s health, disease, or condition.

Pound Sterling Price News And Forecast: GBP/USD Snaps Two-Day Downtrend

GBP/USD consolidates the biggest weekly loss since November around 1.3235-40 during Monday’s Asian session.

The pair dropped to the lowest levels in 11 weeks by the end of Friday but oversold RSI triggered the cable pair’s corrective pullback.

A downward sloping trend line from February 23 and the 10-DMA, respectively around 1.3315 and 1.3355, test the rebound.

GBP/USD accelerated its downside momentum in a busy Nonfarm Payrolls week, having reached the lowest level in three months below mid-1.3200s.

Risk-aversion remained the underlying market theme, as Russian aggression in Ukraine failed to subside, despite two rounds of ‘peace talks’.

Stagflation risks amid soaring oil prices will likely keep cable undermined in a relatively light week ahead, as investors remain on edge due to the ongoing Ukraine crisis.

Pound Sterling Takes A Hit

The British Pound is the second-worst performing major currency of the past week and month as it proves to be a major loser in the financial fallout caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine which has forced investors to significantly reconsider how fast the Bank of England will raise interest rates in 2022.

“The Bank of England tightening cycle has suffered one of the largest repricings lower. For example, the terminal rate for BoE rates has been downscaled by 70bp over recent weeks, while the Fed cycle is -50bp and the ECB cycle -35bp,” says Chris Turner, Global Head of Markets at ING Bank.

Pound Sterling put in a strong start to 2022 as investors bet the Bank of England would potentially raise rates faster and more than its peers, particularly the European Central Bank.

In a weekly currency briefing analyst Marek Raczko at Barclays says while rates markets pared expectations for most G10 central bank tightening in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Bank of England tightening expectations were pulled back the most.

With little sign of an end to the war in Ukraine and its associated financial fallout investors will continue to lower their expectations of the Bank of England, ensuring the Pound remains under pressure.

For the Pound, the mid-month Bank of England interest rate decision and associated guidance will prove to be the near-term domestic highlight with markets anticipating another 25 basis point hike, but investors are wary the Bank will strike a cautious tone about the economic outlook.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey told Parliament’s Treasury Select Committee last week that price-setting practices at businesses and wage dynamics “Very clearly” pose upside risks to inflation, meaning rates must continue to rise at the Bank of England.

Risk Dominates Sterling, Pound To Euro Rate Trades Near 5-Year Best

The Pound Euro exchange rate hit fresh 5-year highs just above 1.2100 before a correction to 1.2080 on Friday.

The Euro has been the most vulnerable in global markets while the dollar has secured net support on safe-haven grounds and the Pound Sterling has been stuck in the middle.

“ING noted;”The pound has come under some pressure this week but is definitely showing much better resilience compared to other European currencies like the euro and Swedish krona.

There have been further concerns that the sanctions on Russia and Russian oligarchs will result in capital outflows from the UK. Euro Tests Key Support Levels.

The Euro has remained firmly on the defensive against all major currencies with the Euro to Dollar exchange rate sliding to test the key 1.1000 level.

MUFG added; “EUR/USD long-term support comes in on the trend-line support from the record low in October 2000 of 0.8230 and the pandemic-related low in March 2020 of 1.0636. That support is at 1.0884 on the monthly chart in March.”1.2195.

“Danske was cautious over the potential for further Sterling gains;”EUR/GBP moved below 0.83, as the situation is likely marginally worse for the euro area than the UK, although we still doubt that the cross will move significantly below 0.83.

Pound Sterling Fails To Gain Momentum Amid Upbeat Retail Sales Data

Oddly enough, the pound sterling remained flat after the release of the report.

The pound sterling is unlikely to climb until the Bank of England provides hints about the possibility of rate hikes.

Today, trading activity is likely to be sluggish because of the public holiday in the US. The pound sterling is trading within the sideways channel.

Should the price hold at one of these levels on the 4H chart, it will signal the breakout from the sideways channel.

The pound sterling will keep trading flat.

On the short-term timeframes, the pound sterling is overbought due to the stagnation in the market.

As for complex indicator analysis, it gives a buy signal on the short-term and intraday charts amid the price movement within the upper limit of the sideways channel.

History & Denominations

Pound sterling, the basic monetary unit of Great Britain, divided decimally into 100 new pence.

The term is derived from the fact that, about 775, silver coins known as “Sterlings” were issued in the Saxon kingdoms, 240 of them being minted from a pound of silver, the weight of which was probably about equal to the later troy pound.

Large payments came to be reckoned in “Pounds of sterlings,” a phrase later shortened to “Pounds sterling.” After the Norman Conquest the pound was divided for accounting purposes into 20 shillings and into 240 pennies, or pence.

In medieval Latin documents the words libra, solidus, and denarius were used to denote the pound, shilling, and penny, which gave rise to the use of the symbols £, s., and d.On February 15, 1971, the pound sterling was officially decimalized into 100 new pence.

The symbol was retained for the pound sterling, and the letter p was chosen for the new penny.

This article was most recently revised and updated by Adam Augustyn.

Simple English

The pound sterling, also called just the pound, is the official currency used in the United Kingdom.

A pound coin originally weighed one troy pound of sterling silver, giving the currency the name “Pound sterling”.

One pound sterling was originally divided by 240 sterling pence.

So a single one-pound coin weighed one troy pound and a single 1-penny coin weighed one pennyweight.

The pound has only been divided into 100 pence since 1971.

The price £4 6s 3¾d was pronounced: “four pounds six shillings and thruppence three-farthings”.

In 1971, the pound sterling of the United Kingdom and the Irish Pound of Ireland were decimalised.

Difference Between Pound And Sterling

Are these two different things? Pound and sterling are used interchangeably in the United Kingdom, but is there really a difference between these two words used for the currency denomination?

The British pound is a type of currency, much like the euro for Spain and the dollar for the USA. The pound sterling, generally shortened to just “Pound,” is the certified currency of the United Kingdom, Tristan da Cunha, British Overseas Territories of South Georgia, the South Sandwich Islands, the Isle of Man, Channel Islands, and the British Antarctic Territory.

In formal contexts, the full, official name is used – pound sterling.

These currencies are: the Egyptian pound, the Lebanese pound, the Sudanese pound, and the Syrian pound.

The pound is also recognized as the United Kingdom Pound.

The pound sterling is the oldest currency currently being used in the world.

Post Idea #8: OneWeb satellite constellation

OneWeb Satellite Constellation

The OneWeb satellite constellation is a planned initial 648-satellite constellation which is in the process of being completed in 2022, with a goal to provide global satellite Internet broadband services to people everywhere, starting in 2021.

In late March 2020, after securing its global satellite spectrum and orbital rights with the International Telecommunication Union and launching 74 satellites, OneWeb filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection due to financial difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, but maintained the satellite operations center for the satellites already in orbit while the court determined the disposition of OneWeb’s assets.

In February 2017, OneWeb announced that it had sold most of the communication capacity of its initial 648 satellites, and was considering nearly quadrupling the size of the satellite constellation by adding 1,972 additional satellites that it has priority spectrum license rights for.

After OneWeb had built the initial satellites and done ground testing where they found the as-built sats “Demonstrated better than expected performance”, OneWeb announced in December 2018 that the company will need only 600 satellites rather than 900 previously planned for the initial constellation.

On 1 July 2021, OneWeb launched a further 36 satellites, to take its in-orbit mega-constellation to 254 and making OneWeb the second largest satellite fleet in orbit.

OneWeb competitor, satellite fleet operator ABS, has expressed concerns about the amount of electromagnetic interference that the OneWeb constellation could add to existing terrestrial transceivers.

Amazon announced a large broadband internet satellite constellation proposal in April 2019, planning to launch up to 3,236 satellites in the next decade in what Amazon calls “Project Kuiper”, a satellite constellation that will work in concert with Amazon’s previously-announced large network of 12 satellite ground station facilities announced in November 2018.

OneWeb Streamlines Constellation

OneWeb reduces constellation plans from 47,884 to 6,372 satellites.

Fundamental constellation architecture remains the same.

London, 13 January 2021 -OneWeb, the Low Earth Orbit satellite communications company has streamlined its constellation and has reduced its request for US market access from 47,884 to 6,372 satellites.

Together with the satellites for which it is already licensed by the FCC, the total constellation size will be roughly 7,000, down from the 48,000 or so proposed last year.

This solidification of OneWeb’s constellation demonstrates the commitment and vision of OneWeb’s new owners, the UK Government and Bharti Global who are dedicated to deploying a cost effective, responsible, and groundbreaking satellite network to deliver global broadband.

OneWeb remains focused on launching its first-generation system of 648 satellites and is on track to start regional commercial services within a year.

Today’s streamlining activities highlight OneWeb’s plan for global connectivity services and for future generations and possibilities for the network.

March 3, 2022.OneWeb, a satellite internet company partly owned by the British government, has canceled an upcoming satellite launch using a Russian rocket and suspended all future launches that relied on Russia, the company announced on Thursday after a tense public standoff with Roscosmos, Russia’s space agency.

Just after the Soyuz rolled out to the pad ahead of its launch, Dmitry Rogozin, Russia’s space chief, announced two conditions aimed at countering the sanctions placed on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine: The space agency would not proceed with the satellite mission unless Britain withdrew its multibillion dollar stake in OneWeb and the company provided a “Guarantee that its satellites will not be used for military purposes.”

The space agency’s ultimatum, which came just three days before the previously planned launch, spurred emergency discussions among British officials and OneWeb shareholders, who decided Wednesday night to cease all future launches from Baikonur, the spaceport in Kazakhstan where Russia conducts most of its launches.

The company had paid for its Russian launches in bulk through Arianespace, the French rocket company, and had six more missions remaining under the contract – a launch lineup likely worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

The official added it was unclear to OneWeb executives when or how the 36 satellites currently in Russia for Friday’s now-canceled mission would come off the rocket, or where those satellites will be stored while OneWeb searches for a different launch provider.

Last week, Roscosmos withdrew more than 80 Russian personnel from French Guiana where the European Space Agency has its only launch site and flies commercial Soyuz missions.

The freeze may most acutely affect Northrop Grumman, which uses Russian-made engines for its Antares launch vehicle that ferries cargo to the space station for NASA. SpaceX also provides this service to the space station, as do spacecraft launched by Japan and Russia.

Russia Holds OneWeb Rocket Launch Hostage, Issues Conditional Demands

In its latest response to international sanctions and growing geopolitical tensions, Russia’s state space corporation, Roscosmos, is making a list of demands of its customer OneWeb before it agrees to launch the company’s upcoming mission this week.

OneWeb’s satellites were scheduled to take off on top of a Russian Soyuz rocket on March 5th in Kazakhstan, but in light of these new demands, it seems likely that launch will not take place.

If these demands aren’t met, Roscosmos says it will roll back the Soyuz rocket, and the launch won’t take place as planned.

OneWeb has been launching its satellites exclusively on Russia’s Soyuz rocket for the last few years, either from French Guiana or Kazakhstan.

The British government has also come under pressure separately to cancel this launch in light of the Russian invasion, according to the BBC. Roscosmos claims that delaying the launch “Will cause no economic damage” because the rocket had already been built and paid for, according to Russia’s state press organization TASS. The OneWeb satellites will also remain at the launch site at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan “Until the situation is resolved,” the space organization claims.

“The Russian side is ready to fulfill its commitments given that the foreign customer provides legal guarantees, the statement says.” OneWeb planned to launch an initial constellation of 648 satellites and had a handful of launches planned for 2022 on Soyuz rockets to flesh out the system.

The conditional launch is yet another way Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is having a spillover effect on space partnerships.

OneWeb Satellite Constellation

OneWeb plans the first constellation of 588 satellites with up to 60 orbital spare parts.

The satellites will carry out design activities for the entire satellite fleet, and the first ten aircraft models will be produced in France.

OneWeb launched the first six satellites in its constellation in February, and it is expected to launch another 30 satellites in December.

OneWeb has gone down in history and launched a campaign to build the largest satellite constellation.

Arianespace was ordered by OneWeb in 2015 to launch the first constellation of 650 OneWeb satellites aboard 21 Soyuz rockets by 2020.

OneWeb also has agreements to launch a satellite with Blue Origin and Virgin Orbit.

Satellite technology is much, much cheaper than it used to be, and the large number of satellites needed for the network reduces unit costs.

While Masterson acknowledge that he pays close attention to both likely and potential competitors – “You’ve got to be paranoid” – his focus remains on getting OneWeb to market and executing its rollout plan.

OneWeb’s satellite network is a business-to-business model, planning to deliver service through existing telecommunications companies, internet service providers, and other distributors.

OneWeb’s “Proposition is very simple,” Masterson said: “We provide fiber where there is no fiber,” whether that’s cellular backhaul, acting as an emergency backup, or building WiFi networks for remote factories and manufacturing.

While Masterson declined to comment specifically on whether OneWeb was also speaking with Project Gigabit leadership, he did say that the company “Has been speaking to various elements of the government” and other organizations in the U.K. market.

Notably, the U.K. government is part of OneWeb’s ownership, having joined Indian telecommunications conglomerate Bharti Global in investing $1 billion to finance OneWeb’s return from bankruptcy.

OneWeb raised another $400 million in January from Hughes Network Systems and SoftBank Group, with the latter a return investor – as SoftBank had invested $2 billion into OneWeb before its bankruptcy.

Masterson said OneWeb plans to open a demonstration site in the U.K. in April, to begin showing its telecommunications customers tests of OneWeb’s capabilities.

OneWeb Pulls Out Of Baikonur After Russia’S Space Director Held Its Satellites Hostage

Over the past few days, the director of Russia’s space agency, Dimitry Rogozin, took to Twitter to make demands before launching OneWeb’s next group of satellites.

Then on March 3, the company decided to pull out entirely of its Baikonur-based Soyuz launches.

OneWeb was expecting to launch its 14th batch of satellites into orbit from Russia’s spaceport in Kazakstan Friday, March 4.

Actually, OneWeb is purchasing these flights through Arianespace, as the European launch provider uses Russia’s Soyuz rocket as its medium-lift launcher.

OneWeb has six more launches planned, all from Baikonur to finish its constellation.

With no more Soyuz launches from Arianespace, OneWeb might have to look elsewhere to finish the job.

OneWeb may have to turn to its competitor, SpaceX, as it seems to be the only one capable of adding this many launches into an already busy schedule.

Russian scientist Afanasiy Ilich Tobonov researched mass animal deaths in the 1990s and concluded that the mass deaths of birds and wildlife in the Sakha Republic were noted only along the flight paths of space rockets launched from the Baikonur cosmodrome.

With the conclusion of NASA’s Space Shuttle program in 2011, Baikonur became the sole launch site used for crewed missions to the ISS until the launch of Crew Dragon Demo-2 in 2020.

The Baikonur Cosmodrome has two on-site multi-purpose airports, serving both the personnel transportation needs and the logistics of space launches.

Baikonur Cosmodrome has a small museum, next to two small cottages, once residences of the rocket engineer Sergei Korolev and the first cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin.

Baikonur Cosmodrome: Russian Launch Complex

Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan has been the launch site for Soviet and Russian space missions since the beginning of space exploration in 1957.

The site has mostly been used to launch Soviet Union and Russian cosmonauts, but after the Cold War cooled, some American and European astronauts started to launch there as well.

“The former Soviet Union used the name and coordinates of a small mining town, Baikonur, to describe the location of its rocket complex. In fact, the launch complex is about 322 kilometers southwest of the mining town near Tyuratam in Kazakhstan. This misrepresentation was done intentionally to hide the actual location of the launch complex. Although the true location is now known, the launch complex is still referred to as Baikonur.”

“Russia’s upcoming transfer of certain Baikonur launch facilities to Kazakhstan will make the two countries’ space programs even more dependent on each other,” it wrote.

The first launch at Vostochny took place in April 2016, when three satellites were launched aboard a Russian Soyuz rocket.

The second launch occurred in November 2017 and saw a $45 million weather satellite lost due to human error; the mission was accidentally programmed as though it was launching from Baikonur.

The Baikonur Cosmodrome is a complicated engineering and technical complex, it is the world’s oldest and largest operational space launch facility.

Baikonur, Kazakhstan

His journey began at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, the world’s oldest and largest space launch facility, set in the desolate desert steppe of Kazakhstan.

One of the high-altitude reconnaissance jets spotted the complex in the summer of 1957, around the same time that the facility was testing the first intercontinental ballistic missiles and just months before Sputnik 1, the first man-made satellite put into space, was launched from its pads.

As the most active spaceport in the world, the Baikonur Cosmodrome has a long list of achievements, some of which tend to be overshadowed by Gagarin’s famed flight.

Laika, a stray mutt with astronomically bad luck, was taken from the streets of Moscow to Baikonur only to undergo months of training for a certain-death mission that saw her become the first animal to reach space.

Today, the Cosmodrome is a far less secretive place, and visitors can learn about the history of the Soviet and Russian space programs at the museum in the city of Baikonur just outside the complex.

For more explosive thrills, tours offered by private companies offer the public a chance to witness the launches of manned and unmanned space missions from the Cosmodrome facilities.

Know Before You Go. The closest train stop to the Baikonur Cosmodrome is the Tyuratam station.

Location & Facts

Baikonur Cosmodrome, also spelled Baykonur, Baykonyr, or Bajkonur, also called Tyuratam or Turatam, former Soviet and current Russian space centre in south-central Kazakhstan.

Baikonur was a Soviet code name for the centre, but American analysts often called it Tyuratam, after the railroad station at Tyuratam, the nearest large city.

The Soviet Union’s secretiveness about its exact location led to confusion of the site with another Baikonur, a town about 200 miles northeast of the space centre in the desert area near Zhezqazghan.

The Baikonur Cosmodrome was the chief operations centre of the Soviets’ ambitious space program from the 1960s through the ’80s and is equipped with complete facilities for launching both crewed and uncrewed space vehicles.

Several historic flights originated there: that of the first artificial satellite, the first crewed orbital flight, and the flight of the first woman in space.

The town supporting the facility was raised to city status in 1966 and named Leninsk.

The facility remained the base of the Soviet space program until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, after which it continued to function under Russian auspices.

Foreigners To Leave Baikonur Only After Ensuring Security Of OneWeb Satellites

Foreign specialists will be able to leave the Baikonur cosmodrome once they have checked the safety of the British OneWeb satellites and sealed the premises where they will be stored, which may take at least one week, a source at the spaceport told Sputnik.

MOSCOW Foreign specialists will be able to leave the Baikonur cosmodrome once they have checked the safety of the British OneWeb satellites and sealed the premises where they will be stored, which may take at least one week, a source at the spaceport told Sputnik.

Pre-launch work on the satellites took place at Baikonur under the contracts with the European launch services provider Arianespace and Starsem company.

He clarified that the technological design of the satellites is classified, “Thus, the foreign specialists will not leave until the demolition of the satellites is completed.” The source said it would take at least a week to remove the satellites and place them in sealed storages.

On March 2, Director General of the state corporation Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin set the conditions for the launch, notably exhaustive legal guarantees that the UK-based company OneWeb would not use satellites for military purposes.

On Thursday, the OneWeb board eventually voted to suspend all launches from the Baikonur cosmodrome, with UK State Secretary for business, Energy and Industrial strategy Kwasi Kwarteng stressing that the UK government has no intention of selling its share in OneWeb.

The OneWeb satellites are designed to build a space-based communications system providing broadband internet access to any location across the globe.

Arianespace

Arianespace SA is a French company founded in 1980 as the world’s first commercial launch service provider.

As of May 2021, Arianespace had launched more than 850 satellites in 287 launches over 41 years.

During 2002, the ESA announced the Arianespace Soyuz programme in cooperation with Russia; a launch site for Soyuz was constructed as the Guiana Space Centre, while the Soyuz launch vehicle was modified for use at the site.

On 21 October 2011, Arianespace launched the first Soyuz rocket ever from outside former Soviet territory.

In 2015, Arianespace shareholding was restructured due to the creation of Airbus Safran Launchers, which is tasked with developing and manufacturing the Ariane 6 carrier rocket.

At the time, Arianespace has a backlog of launches worth €4.5 billion with 38 satellites to be launched on Ariane 5, 7 on Soyuz and 9 on Vega, claiming 60% of the global satellite launch market.

Additionally Arianespace offers optional back-up launch service on H-IIA through Launch Services Alliance.

Arianespace, OneWeb Suspend Soyuz Launches Indefinitely

In response to Russia withdrawing its Soyuz support personnel from Europe’s South American space port, Arianespace has suspended all future launches atop the Russian rocket.

“However, it is now challenged by Roscosmos’ unilateral decision to withdraw from and suspend all Soyuz launches from Europe’s Spaceport. Readied Soyuz launchers and Galileo satellites are in stable configuration and in security.”

On March 3, OneWeb released a statement saying its board voted to suspend all launches from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

“Arianespace will work with its partners to ensure the well-being of the goods and means currently in Baikonur,” Arianespace said of the OneWeb satellites in Kazakhstan.

OneWeb was planning up to six Soyuz launches atop a Soyuz rocket from Baikonur this year.

Since its debut at the South American space port in 2011, Soyuz rockets have launched 27 times.

Arianespace has two other launches it can use at the Guiana Space Center: the small-lift Vega C and heavy-lift Ariane 5.

Europe’S Rocket-Launch Company Grapples With Ukraine War Fallout

France-based satellite-launch venture Arianespace on Friday said that it is exploring its options after the Russian space agency withdrew cooperation on certain projects, disrupting some rocket operations.

Arianespace has been cooperating with Russian entities to use the Russian-designed Soyuz rocket to launch some spacecraft from the European spaceport in French Guyana and the Russian-controlled facility at Baikonur in Kazakhstan.

Roscosmos, as Russia’s space agency is known, pulled out due to sanctions that the European Union and other governments have imposed on Russia following its attack on Ukraine.

“Galileo satellites are in stable configuration,” the company said.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has stressed international space cooperation.

Roscosmos has cast doubts on its future involvement at the International Space Station, and on Thursday it said it was halting deliveries of rocket engines to the U.S. Satellite-broadband company OneWeb on Thursday said it would suspend satellite launches from a Russian spaceport in Kazakhstan.

Roscosmos the day prior threatened to block a launch of the company’s communications satellites, unless it was given guarantees they wouldn’t be used for military purposes.

Russia Wants Launch Guarantees From Europe’S Arianespace

Russia’s space agency on Wednesday demanded legal guarantees from Europe’s Arianespace and OneWeb that satellites Moscow is set to launch this year will not be used for military purposes.

“We demand exhaustive legally binding guarantees that OneWeb will not use these satellites for military purposes and will not provide these services to relevant military structures,” Roscosmos said.

The space agency said the deadline to provide the guarantees was 1830 GMT Friday.

Otherwise, it said, the launch of a Soyuz with 36 satellites set for Saturday will be cancelled.

Russia-Ukraine War Raises Questions For Upcoming OneWeb Launches

DEVELOPING: In tweets March 2, Roscosmos Director General Dmitry Rogozin said Friday’s launch of 36 OneWeb satellites would proceed only if the company guaranteed its satellites would not be used for military purposes and that the British government divest its stake in the company, demands the company is unlikely to accede to.

Mounting international sanctions amid Russia’s war on Ukraine have thrown plans to launch 36 OneWeb satellites this week into uncertainty.

OneWeb’s remaining launches have also already been paid for, according to McLaughlin, meaning there are no payments that could be blocked by sanctions or efforts to limit Russia’s access to international financial services.

Russia’s space agency Roscosmos appears committed to moving ahead with OneWeb’s upcoming launch.

McLaughlin said OneWeb is “Reviewing daily” its remaining launches as the geopolitical situation continues to evolve.

Arianespace has launched 428 of OneWeb’s planned 648-strong constellation in 13 missions to date: Two from French Guiana, five from Kazakhstan and six from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia.

Russia’s decision to withdraw 87 employees of several Russian companies that support Soyuz launches in French Guiana will, at a minimum, delay a plan to launch two satellites for Europe’s Galileo navigation system that was slated for April.

What Is A CASB? Cloud Access Security Broker

Before the rise of cloud computing and BYOD policies, enterprise security existed in the same “Walled garden” model that it had for more than a decade.

As services began originating in and shifting to the cloud-and employees began using these cloud services, with or without prior knowledge or approval of IT-businesses began looking for a way to enforce consistent security policies across multiple clouds and safeguard both users and corporate data.

The development of the cloud access security broker allowed enterprise security professionals to gain visibility into the cloud, particularly unsanctioned software-as-a-service usage, or Shadow IT. The insights provided by their CASB were shocking to many IT managers, who soon discovered that cloud usage in their enterprise was much deeper and more pervasive than they had imagined.

According to the 2019 McAfee Cloud Adoption and Risk Report, while the average IT professional thought the business utilized around 30 cloud services, in reality they were using an average of 1,935.

During this time, many businesses were moving their data storage capabilities from on-premises data centers to the cloud.

Today, malware is more pervasive, phishing is both more elegant and better targeted, and small mistakes-for example, opening an AWS S3 bucket to the public-can create a security hole that could cost millions.

Because CASB security measures include features specifically designed to address these issues, the use of a CASB is now regarded as essential elements of enterprise security.

What Is A Cloud Access Security Broker?

A cloud access security broker is software or hardware that sits between users and their cloud service to enforce security policies as they access cloud-based resources.

CASBs are increasingly being used to protect against cloud security risks, comply with data privacy regulations, and enforce corporate security policies.

The concept of CASB first emerged as the rise of cloud computing created the need for more consistent security across multiple cloud environments.

CASBs are increasingly important to providing protection against malware and phishing attacks, securing access to cloud services, and ensuring cloud application security.

What does a CASB do to improve cloud security? It ensures that traffic between user devices and cloud providers complies with organizations’ security policies.

They provide insight into cloud application usage across cloud platforms, which is crucial in highly regulated industries with large, disparate workforces accessing multiple on-premises and cloud environments.

To govern cloud applications: CASBs provide a centralized view of an organization’s cloud environment, which helps them understand which users are accessing which applications, where they access them from, and the device they use to do so.

What Is A CASB Cloud Access Security Broker?

A cloud access security broker is a security check point between cloud network users and cloud-based applications.

CASB vs CSPM vs CWPP. The core elements of cloud security posture management are often compared to that of cloud workload protection platforms.

Organizations are encouraged to deploy all three security methods to optimize their cloud security infrastructure.

A CASB will alert the cloud security team to any active threats or anomalous activity.

The benefit of cloud computing is also its drawback: users can access cloud environments from anywhere with an internet connection – but so can cybercriminals and digital adversaries.

Organizations must design and implement a comprehensive cloud security solution to protect against an expanding array of threats and increasingly sophisticated attacks within the cloud environment.

Benefits of a CASB. CASBs help give organizations much deeper visibility into how data is being used within the cloud environment, including cloud applications, cloud services and cloud users.

What Is A Cloud Access Security Broker?

As mentioned above, this must be paired with out-of-band security for data already at rest within the cloud.

It’s one component of Zscaler Workload Posture along with cloud security posture management and cloud infrastructure entitlement management.

In addition to cloud resource misconfigurations that could enable data breaches and leakage, enterprises must identify and control sensitive data patterns in the cloud.

The Zscaler cloud-native security platform, the Zero Trust Exchange, provides unified data protection with cloud DLP and CASB capabilities.

Cloud sandboxing can be used in both scenarios to identify even zero-day malware, while agentless cloud browser isolation can secure access from unmanaged endpoints that often house malware.

What Gartner says about CASB. In its 2018 Magic Quadrant for Cloud Access Security Brokers, Gartner predicted that by 2022, 60 percent of large enterprises will use CASBs, up from the 20 percent that used them at the end of 2018.

In part because of this convergence, Gartner coined the term secure access service edge, a framework that refers to cloud-delivered security offerings that provide integrated functionality, such as CASB, SWG, zero trust network access, and more.

February 23, 2022 • 5 min read In times of great change, challenges and opportunities can be found in many directions.

Today, we’re announcing new advances to help customers strengthen visibility and control across multiple cloud providers, workloads, devices, and digital identities-all from a centralized management view.

Microsoft Security delivers new multicloud capabilities.

What Is A Cloud Access Security Broker?

A cloud access security broker, is cloud-delivered software or on-premises software and/or hardware that acts as an intermediary between users and cloud service providers.

In addition to providing visibility, a CASB also allows organizations to extend the reach of security policies from their existing on-premises infrastructure to the cloud and create new policies for cloud-specific contexts.

As services previously offered on-premises continue migrating to the cloud, maintaining visibility and control in these environments is essential to meeting compliance requirements, safeguarding the enterprise, and allowing your employees to safely use cloud services without introducing additional risk.

With the increase in remote workers and workforce mobility, the growth in bring-your-own-device programs, and the presence of unsanctioned employee app usage, the ability to monitor and govern cloud applications such as Microsoft Office 365, SAP SuccessFactors and Slack has become essential to enterprise security.

Rather than banning cloud services outright and potentially impacting employee productivity, a CASB enables businesses to take a granular approach to data protection and policy enforcement, making it possible to safely use productivity-enhancing and cost-effective cloud services.

Protection against cloud threats and misconfiguration with Cloud Security Posture Management.

In a recent report, Gartner describes CASBs as an essential element of SASE. While a CASB is crucial for securing a company’s cloud usage, it is also a key part of an overall strategy businesses should employ to ensure defense from endpoint to cloud.

5 Best Infrared Thermometers- Mar. 2022

An infrared thermometer works by bouncing an infrared beam off an object and measuring the heat differential.

Various professionals use infrared thermometers on the job.

Not everyone needs an infrared thermometer to detect hot spots; some infrared thermometers allow for the measurement of very cold temperatures.

In general, you’ll find infrared thermometers have a temperature range of around -50°C to 500°C. Pricier models geared toward professionals may provide an even higher temperature range.

Some infrared thermometers have two lasers to help frame the space that you are measuring.

Many infrared thermometers allow you to adjust for emissivity in the event that you must measure an object with low emissivity that cannot absorb the light emitted by the device.

Infrared thermometers can tell you the temperature on the surface of the meat but not the temperature inside the meat.

Infrared Thermometer

Thermometer which infers temperature by measuring infrared energy emission.

An infrared thermometer is a thermometer which infers temperature from a portion of the thermal radiation sometimes called black-body radiation emitted by the object being measured.

The design essentially consists of a lens to focus the infrared thermal radiation on to a detector, which converts the radiant power to an electrical signal that can be displayed in units of temperature after being compensated for ambient temperature.

A non-contact infrared thermometer is useful for measuring temperature under circumstances where thermocouples or other probe-type sensors cannot be used or do not produce accurate data for a variety of reasons.

Infrared thermometers can be used to serve a wide variety of temperature monitoring functions.

The most common infrared thermometer is the spot infrared pyrometer or infrared pyrometer, which measures the temperature at a spot on a surface.

Infrared thermal imaging cameras or infrared cameras are essentially infrared radiation thermometers that measure the temperature at many points over a relatively large area to generate a two-dimensional image, called a thermogram, with each pixel representing a temperature.

Are Infrared Thermometers Accurate? – Cleveland Clinic

Q: I’ve had my temperature checked with a hand-held thermometer for work or when entering a building during coronavirus, but is it actually accurate in detecting a fever?

A: With the surge of COVID-19, many hospitals and businesses have implemented temperature screenings for employees, patients and customers using infrared thermometers.

These devices offer efficiency, safety and accuracy in detecting fevers in large groups of people.

Research has shown that, when used correctly, infrared or no-contact thermometers are just as accurate as oral or rectal thermometers.

No-contact thermometers are popular among pediatricians, as kids often squirm around when trying to get a temperature read, but it also holds true in mass temperature screenings.

The device offers safety to both parties while providing a quick and accurate read. Of course, when available, an internal thermometer is the gold standard in healthcare, but due to COVID-19 and the need to quickly mass test, a no-contact thermometer has become the standard.

With many establishments now requiring temperature checks, these hand-held thermometers are proving to be safe, quick and accurate while helping to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

What Is An Infrared Thermometer And How Does It Work

It’s able to gain the infrared radiation by utilizing a lens with built-in laser to focus on the infrared light emitted from a particular object and then gathering them into a detector named a thermopile.

Then it’s in the thermopile inside the infrared thermometer that the absorbed infrared radiation is shifted into heat which is then converted into electricity.

Are infrared thermometers worth using? Why can they be used to measure the temperatures of human body? Compared with the conventional probe thermometers, are there any merits of the infrared thermometers? Well, the answer is definitely Yes.

Here comes some advantages of the infrared thermometer which can get you better understand this infrared option.

The infrared thermometer is able to make accurate temperate reading with only a measurement error of 2.0%. A large number of infrared thermometers nowadays also support adjusting emissivity setting which enables you to calibrate the thermometers to fit the emissivity of different types of objects, leading to more accurate temperature measurement.

The main reason why these worries arise lies in the public’s misconception that the infrared thermometers work by emitting their own infrared rays which are harmful to the body.

That being said, the infrared thermometers don’t have their own built-in infrared radiation, let alone emitting any IR. Nevertheless, using infrared thermometers isn’t absolutely safe.

Goods And Services Tax

The goods and services tax is a value added tax introduced in Canada on January 1, 1991, by the government of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.

In five provinces, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario and Prince Edward Island, the GST is combined with provincial sales tax into a harmonized sales tax, while Quebec has a de facto HST in that its provincial sales tax follows the same rules as the GST and both are collected and administered together by the provincial government.

The goods and services tax is defined in law at Part IX of the Excise Tax Act.

In 1989, the Progressive Conservative government of Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and his finance minister Michael Wilson proposed the creation of a national sales tax of 9%. At that time, every province in Canada except Alberta already had its own provincial sales tax imposed at the retail level.

The purpose of the national sales tax was to replace the 13.5% Manufacturers’ Sales Tax that the federal government imposed at the wholesale level on manufactured goods.

The Government defended the tax as a replacement for a tax unseen by consumers because it was placed on manufacturers, and in the long run it was posited that removing the MST would make Canada more competitive.

Opponents of these tax decreases cited that sales taxes target those who spend more and therefore such reductions disproportionately benefit Canadians giving those who have the most and spend the most the largest tax decrease.

Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia is geographically divided into two subregions, namely Mainland Southeast Asia and Maritime Southeast Asia.

Eastern Bangladesh and Northeast India have strong cultural ties with Mainland Southeast Asia and are sometimes considered transregional areas between South Asia and Southeast Asia.

On some occasions, Sri Lanka has been considered a part of Southeast Asia because of its cultural and religious ties to Mainland Southeast Asia.

The authors concluded that East Asian-related ancestry expanded from Mainland Southeast Asia into Maritime Southeast Asia much earlier than previously suggested, as early as 25,000BC, long before the expansion of Austroasiatic and Austronesian groups.

Geneflow of East-Eurasian ancestry into Maritime Southeast Asia and Oceania could be estimated to ~25,000BC. The pre-Neolithic South-Eurasian populations of Maritime Southeast Asia were largely replaced by the expansion of various East-Eurasian populations, beginning about 50,000BC to 25,000BC years ago from Mainland Southeast Asia.

It became the dominant trading power in mainland Southeast Asia for about five centuries, provided passage for Indian and Chinese goods and assumed authority over the flow of commerce through Southeast Asia.

While Southeast Asia is rich in flora and fauna, Southeast Asia is facing severe deforestation which causes habitat loss for various endangered species such as orangutan and the Sumatran tiger.

Map, Islands, Countries, Culture, & Facts

Extending some 700 miles southward from the mainland into insular Southeast Asia is the Malay Peninsula; this peninsula structurally is part of the mainland, but it also shares many ecological and cultural affinities with the surrounding islands and thus functions as a bridge between the two regions.

Mainland Southeast Asia is divided into the countries of Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, and the small city-state of Singapore at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula; Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, which occupy the eastern portion of the mainland, often are collectively called the Indochinese Peninsula.

Southeast Asia stretches some 4,000 miles at its greatest extent and encompasses some 5,000,000 square miles of land and sea, of which about 1,736,000 square miles is land.

Mount Hkakabo in northern Myanmar on the border with China, at 19,295 feet, is the highest peak of mainland Southeast Asia.

Under these circumstances, it often is difficult to keep in mind the region’s underlying unity, and it is understandable that Southeast Asia should so often be treated as a miscellaneous collection of cultures that simply do not quite fit anywhere else.

From ancient times Southeast Asia has been considered by its neighbours to be a region in its own right and not merely an extension of their own lands.

Despite inevitable variation among societies, common views of gender, family structure, and social hierarchy and mobility may be discerned throughout mainland and insular Southeast Asia, and a broadly common commercial and cultural inheritance has continued to affect the entire region for several millennia.

Introduction To Southeast Asia

Because of this reliable wind pattern, Southeast Asia became a meeting place for trade between India and China, the two great markets of early Asia.

On the fertile plans of Java and mainland Southeast Asia sedentary communities grew irrigated rice; along the coasts, which were less suitable for agriculture because of mangrove swamps, fishing and trade were the principal occupations.

The chronology of Islam’s arrival in Southeast Asia is not known exactly.

From at least the tenth century, Muslims were among the many foreigners trading in Southeast Asia, and a few individuals from Southeast Asia traveled to the Middle East for study.

Muslim traders from various parts of India came to Southeast Asia in large numbers and they, too, provided a vehicle for the spread of Islamic ideas.

As a result of its multiple origins, the Islam that reached Southeast Asia was very varied.

The influence of modernist Islamic thinking that developed in Egypt meant educated Muslims in Southeast Asia also began to think about reforming Islam as a way of answering the Western challenge.

These advances and added features to business class, as well as the late 2000s recession, have caused some airlines to remove or not install first-class seating in their aircraft which leaves business class as the most expensive seats on such planes, while other airlines have reintroduced first-class sections as suites to stay upmarket over contemporary business class.

Long-haul business-class seats are substantially different from economy-class seats, and many airlines have installed “Lie-flat” seats into business class, whereas previously seats with such a recline were only available in international first class.

Many airlines offer such seats in international first class but retain inferior seating in business class to differentiate the two products and fares.

Business class is the highest class of service in China high-speed rail, while first class and second class are the more affordable options.

What Is Business Class? Why Does It Vary So Much Between Carriers?

Low-cost carriers have traditionally not offered business class.

There were many early versions of a business class offering during the 1970s, including British Airways Super Club, Japan Airlines Tachibana, and Pan American Clipper Class.

There are significant differences in business class products, not just between airlines but with the same airline too.

Virgin Atlantic has an excellent business class offering, called Upper Class.

Singapore Airlines comes in third in the World Airlines Awards for business class in 2019, and second for business class seating.

The website FareCompare reports business class costing, on average, four times economy class.

With business class offerings like the new Qsuite from Qatar Airways, it is harder to justify the increased cost of first class.

Polylactic Acid

Several industrial routes afford usable PLA. Two main monomers are used: lactic acid, and the cyclic di-ester, lactide.

The direct condensation of lactic acid monomers can also be used to produce PLA. This process needs to be carried out at less than 200 °C; above that temperature, the entropically favored lactide monomer is generated.

Heat-resistant PLA can withstand temperatures of 110 °C. The basic mechanical properties of PLA are between those of polystyrene and PET. The melting temperature of PLLA can be increased by 40-50 °C and its heat deflection temperature can be increased from approximately 60 °C to up to 190 °C by physically blending the polymer with PDLA. PDLA and PLLA form a highly regular stereocomplex with increased crystallinity.

Biodegradation of PDLA is slower than for PLA due to the higher crystallinity of PDLA. The flexural modulus of PLA is higher than polystyrene and PLA has good heat sealability.

The boiling point of ethyl acetate is low enough to smooth PLA surfaces in a vapor chamber, similar to using acetone vapor to smooth ABS. PLA can be solvent welded using dichloromethane.

Currently, the SPI resin identification code 7 is applicable for PLA. In Belgium, Galactic started the first pilot unit to chemically recycle PLA. Unlike mechanical recycling, waste material can hold various contaminants.

Composting: PLA is biodegradable under industrial composting conditions, starting with chemical hydrolysis process, followed by microbial digestion, to ultimately degrade the PLA. Under industrial composting conditions, PLA can partly decompose into water and carbon dioxide in 60 days, after which the remainder decomposes much more slowly, with the rate depending on the material’s degree of crystallinity.

What Is PLA? Polylactic Acid Properties, Uses, & Melting Point

PLA is a thermoplastic, meaning it will turn into a liquid in its melting point of 150 to 160 Celsius.

PLA is still considered inferior to polyethylene terephthalate for long-term food storage applications due to permeability issues with PLA. PLA packaging material has been found to be more permeable to moisture and oxygen compared to other plastics, which may result in faster food spoilage.

Sturdier versions of PLA have been developed by mixing different PLA isomers, resulting in higher melting temperature and increased mechanical strength.

Remarks from firms that use PLA as material for food packaging indicate the preference for PLA due to increased aesthetics, better printability, good resistance to grease and oils, and reduced issues in taste and odor transfer.

PLA is widely used in the medical field due to its ability to degrade into non-toxic lactic acid.

Specifically, PLA is widely used in fused filament fabrication 3D printing, where PLA solids are encased in plaster-like mouldings to form moulds that can be filled with molten metal.

Issues with permeability, brittleness, and low melting temperature will have to be addressed by further research, but it is safe to say that PLA will continue to substitute petroleum-based plastics for pharmaceutical and food packaging materials in the future.

Polylactic Acid

Eco-Products offers cups, lids, cutlery, straws and containers made from a biopolymer called PLA. PLA is made from starchy plants like corn, grown right here in the U.S. Starch from corn kernels is processed into a biopolymer that looks, acts, and performs like petroleum-based plastics.

PLA performs much like traditional plastics, but with the crucial benefit of being 100% compostable in commercial compost facilities.

We like PLA because it is versatile, compostable, and best of all, not petroleum derived.

Many of our food containers and even our compostable cutlery is made from PLA. In cutlery, the formulation of PLA is rigid and durable – perfect for high-strength needs and of course, commercial composting!

Our PLA products give you the option of products made from renewable resources, like corn instead of oil.

PLA plastics have the added benefit of being compostable when you are finished using them.

In 1991, the European Institute for Computer Antivirus Research was founded to further antivirus research and improve development of antivirus software.

Increasingly, these signature-less approaches have been defined by the media and analyst firms as “Next-generation” antivirus and are seeing rapid market adoption as certified antivirus replacement technologies by firms such as Coalfire and DirectDefense.

If the antivirus application is not recognized by the policy assessment, whether because the antivirus application has been updated or because it is not part of the policy assessment library, the user will be unable to connect.

If the antivirus software employs heuristic detection, it must be fine-tuned to minimize misidentifying harmless software as malicious.

One approach to implementing cloud antivirus involves scanning suspicious files using multiple antivirus engines.

One of the first things that malicious software does in an attack is disable any existing antivirus software and sometimes the only way to know of an attack is by turning to an online resource that is not installed on the infected computer.

A bootable antivirus disk can be useful when, for example, the installed operating system is no longer bootable or has malware that is resisting all attempts to be removed by the installed antivirus software.

Sodium Chloride

Commonly known as salt, is an ionic compound with the chemical formula NaCl, representing a 1:1 ratio of sodium and chloride ions.

With molar masses of 22.99 and 35.45 g/mol respectively, 100 g of NaCl contains 39.34 g Na and 60.66 g Cl. Sodium chloride is the salt most responsible for the salinity of seawater and of the extracellular fluid of many multicellular organisms.

The salt acts to minimize the effects of shifting caused in the subsurface by changes in humidity and traffic load. Sodium chloride is sometimes used as a cheap and safe desiccant because of its hygroscopic properties, making salting an effective method of food preservation historically; the salt draws water out of bacteria through osmotic pressure, keeping it from reproducing, a major source of food spoilage.

For de-icing, mixtures of brine and salt are used, sometimes with additional agents such as calcium chloride and/or magnesium chloride.

Prior to distribution it is mixed with <100 ppm of sodium ferrocyanide as an anti-caking agent, which enables rock salt to flow freely out of the gritting vehicles despite being stockpiled prior to use.

The IMO regulation is mostly used and sets salt levels to a maximum of 50 mg/m2 soluble salts measured as sodium chloride.

Although evidence of environmental loading of salt has been found during peak usage, the spring rains and thaws usually dilute the concentrations of sodium in the area where salt was applied.

What Is Sodium Chloride And How Is It Used?

In medical cases, your doctor or nurse will typically introduce sodium chloride as an injection.

The weight of salt is usually a combination of 40 percent sodium and 60 percent chloride.

When your doctor prescribes a treatment with salt, they’ll use the term sodium chloride.

Sodium chloride mixed with water creates a saline solution, which has a number of different medical purposes.

Although salt and sodium are different, salt is 40 percent sodium and we get most of our sodium intake from salt.

About 75 to 90 percent of our sodium intake comes from salt, or sodium chloride.

You should consult your doctor before adding more sodium chloride to your diet.

0.9% Sodium Chloride

0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection, USP is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic solution of sodium chloride and water for injection.

0.308 mOsmol/mL. 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection, USP contains no preservatives.

Sodium chloride in water dissociates to provide sodium and chloride ions.

The small volume of fluid and amount of sodium chloride provided by 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection, USP when used only as an isotonic vehicle for parenteral injection of drugs, is unlikely to exert a significant effect on fluid and electrolyte balance except possibly in neonates and very small infants.

Pregnancy: Animal reproduction studies have not been conducted with 0.9% Sodium Chloride Injection, USP. It is also not known whether sodium chloride injection containing additives can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproduction capacity.

Sodium chloride injection containing additives should be given to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed.

Reactions which may occur because of this solution, added drugs or the technique of reconstitution or administration include febrile response, local tenderness, abscess, tissue necrosis or infection at the site of injection, venous thrombosis or phlebitis extending from the site of injection and extravasation.

Sodium Chloride Dose, Indications, Adverse Effects, Interactions… From PDR.Net

In patients with cardiac disease, sodium chloride administration and subsequent sodium retention may exacerbate hypertension, edema, and heart failure.

Because sodium chloride is primarily excreted by the kidney, administration to patients with renal disease, including renal artery stenosis, nephrosclerosis, renal impairment, or renal failure may result in significant sodium and chloride retention.

In contrast, 0.45% sodium chloride and 0.225% sodium chloride are hypotonic.

According to the manufacturer, it is not known whether sodium chloride can cause fetal harm or affect reproduction capacity; only administer sodium chloride during pregnancy if it is clearly needed.

Because 0.9% sodium chloride has equal osmotic pressure to that of the serum, osmosis across cellular membranes is minimal, and the risk of adverse effects during breast-feeding is small with the use of this isotonic solution.

If a breast-feeding infant experiences an adverse effect related to a maternally ingested drug, healthcare providers are encouraged to report the adverse effect to the FDA. Sodium is the principle cation of the extracellular fluid, while chloride is the principle anion.

Sodium chloride distributes primarily to extracellular compartments, including plasma and interstitial fluid; sodium is maintained outside the cell via the Na+/K+-ATPase pump, which exchanges intracellular sodium for extracellular potassium.

Unreported Employment

Unreported employment, also known as money under the table, working under the table, off the books, cash-in-hand, or illicit work is illegal employment that is not reported to the government.

In developed nations, unreported employment evades withholding tax and is part of the informal sector.

Unreported employment can have harmful effects on government, employers, and employees.

Unreported employment directly affects the government’s ability to fund resources.

Short-term youth employment is often unreported but can be very beneficial.

Government revenue collectors typically ignore enforcement of such beneficial, unreported employment.

Discovery and enforcement of small-scaled unreported employment is typically through a secondary indiscretion like fraud, tax irregularities, and unrelated or partially-related civil/criminal violations of the employer or employee.

What Is Unreported Employment?

Unreported employment, often known as moonlighting, cash-in-hand or ‘under the table’ employment, is employment that the state doesn’t know about, meaning it can’t tax the employment or ensure its compliance with labour laws, health and safety regulations and industry procedures.

There are other non-financial incentives for unreported employment, such as avoiding criminal background checks, eliminating paperwork and evading insurance requirements.

Although unreported employment can exist in many industries, it is particularly common in domestic work, self-employed trades such as plumbing and gardening, construction work and casual employment.

Exploitation is commonly cited as a by-product of unreported employment; workers benefit from the lack of taxation but they lose out on the protection that official employment provides, as well as minimum wage laws, which may encourage exploitation.

In some cases workers are trafficked from abroad or forced to work in unreported employment, a form of slavery.

In economic terms, unreported employment forms part of a state’s informal sector – known as the black market – which operates outside of the state and does not contribute to a country’s GNP. The size of unreported unemployment, and the informal sector as a whole, is a common theme in journalism and academic debate.

In 2009, the OECD concluded that half the world’s workers – at the time around 1.8 billion people – were employed in the informal sector.

Unreported Employment

Unreported employment,, is illegal employment that is not reported to the government.

In economic terms, unreported employment forms part of a state’s informal sector – known as the black market – which operates outside of the state and does not contribute to a country’s GNP. The working contract is made without social security costs and does typically not provide health insurance, paid parental leave, paid vacation or pension funds.

Payments are generally in cash, and the employer often does not check the employee’s background or credentials, as is sometimes required by law or otherwise expected by the industry’s client base, such as a license or professional certification.

While the hiring of the employee may or may not be legal in itself, it is often done when the employer or the employee intentionally fails to obey one or more laws.

How Can The Government Stop Unreported Employment

Behind closed doors, many companies and institutions have done little to address sexual harassment, which has contributed to hostile work environments not only for victims of sexual harassment but also for other employees who are merely bystanders.

The courts are split on how to measure the amount of back pay available to workers.

Working under the table, sometimes called “Working off the books,” isn’t necessarily illegal, but to avoid possible tax evasion issues, the income must be reported at tax time.

The government must create more job opportunities for people with criminal convictions and other hard-to-employ populations through public works programs and other legislative actions that increase the number of jobs available for people who need to gain a foothold in the labor market.

Unreported Employment And Envelope Wages In Mid-Transition: Comparing Developments And Causes In The Baltic Countries

This paper compares the prevalence and determinants of unreported employment in the three Baltic countries in 1998 and 2002 using a hitherto little used data set.

The prevalence of unreported employment varies substantially across the three countries and across the two sampling years.

Microeconometric estimations show that firm-related characteristics, such as sectoral activity, firm size and employment changes, are important determinants of unreported employment in all three countries.

Only a small part of the changes in unreported employment between 1998 and 2002 can be accounted for by changes in firm-specific factors and socio-demographic characteristics.

“The only sensible option to tackle the problem of false identity documents is to invest in an online identity document checking system which is linked to a global identity document library”.

Over the years though, it has become apparent that visual inspections of a document aren’t sufficient for a mostly untrained person to determine that a document is genuine or not and so more and more employers moved to either a manual or electronic checking of a document’s Machine Readable Zone,.

The MRZ is a security algorithm of a document’s base data and over the years this extra level of checking provided employers with an added level of assurance and safeguarding.

The days of an MRZ check being sufficient proof of a document’s validity are now however far behind us with a whole host of false documentation from countries such as Italy, Spain, and Portugal carrying correct MRZ coding despite being false documents.

Accurate inspection of these documents is very difficult and almost impossible by the naked eye and so employers need to now consider equipping themselves with more advanced document inspection systems that can not only check an MRZ but also check other security features currently found within identity documents.

There is no longer any ‘safe’ identity document – a survey carried out by NSL Checking of customers using the Keesing Authentiscan system last year showed that the UK passport was amongst the top four false documents encountered by businesses and with a high-quality false UK passport available on the dark web for around £750, this finding should come as no surprise.

For every security feature introduced into an identity document, there will be someone somewhere working hard to defeat that feature and so the only sensible option to tackle the problem of false identity documents is to invest in an online identity document checking system which is linked to a global identity document library as without this, it is now and will be in the future, almost impossible to effectively protect your business and your customers from the effects of illegal working.

What If My Wages Were Not Reported For Unemployment?

State and federal laws generally require employers to pay unemployment insurance taxes and to report employee wages and taxes withheld to various government agencies, including their state unemployment insurance program.

Agencies use information about your wages to determine your eligibility for several benefits, including unemployment insurance.

You face serious consequences when an employer fails to report your wages to the state unemployment insurance program or misclassifies you as a worker who does not receive wages, such as an independent contractor.

You might have learned about unreported wages when you did not receive your W-2 form or when you filed for unemployment benefits and received a denial letter.

An employer who fails to report your wages to the unemployment insurance program might be guilty of the same practice with the Internal Revenue Service and the Social Security Administration.

Contact your state unemployment insurance program if you believe your wages have not been reported.

Contact the IRS if you need to file a fraud report about unreported wages or file an anonymous report using the agency’s Form 3949-A. Collect documentation of your wages, such as pay stubs, direct deposit records, punch cards, W-2 forms or other proof of your employment.

Uberification/Uberization Of Services Is Hot

As a result, Uber is valued over $60 billion for its taxi hailing service in over 81 countries! And this change that the taxi service brought about has also changed the way e-commerce tackles its last mile.

Today there are several Uberized startups that are aggregating service providers as an on-demand mobile service and establishing some service standards.

Goods Transportation: If Uber is about transporting people, it was only a matter of time before someone would start an Uber for renting trucks instead of taxis.

At the heart of any Uberified service is that fact that technology allows you to track orders, service, location, delivery, ratings, and a whole lot more, by merely using your smartphone.

There are a number of other industries that have completely different conditions and attributes from the cab business, but where the circumstances and the underlying motivators that drive rapid adoption and growth will also support an UBER-like solution.

There are a dozen or so different technologies being used in a typical business today, meaning there is a growing risk to mission critical parts of their business operations that most owners are simply unprepared to respond to in any timely manner.

An interesting question- one that will plague many companies in the next few years-is this one: What level of unpreparedness will be deemed to have been sufficiently negligent to invalidate your business interruption insurance, even assuming that you have been conscientious about buying and maintaining such coverage? Assuring that your business has ready access to 24/7 IT support across all of the necessary technical areas is going to quickly look like a very prudent form of insurance and risk abatement.

While some of the major consulting and accounting firms and a few software operations are making some noise about the need for additional levels of business protection, the fact is that, as of now, there’s simply no viable supplier or solution – regardless of what a business might be able to afford to pay- that can support all of the diverse IT needs that continue to grow and to grow more complex and more broadly distributed throughout organizations.

Who ya gonna call? Killer IT pros are scarcer than plumbers when you really need them and, when you need them, you need them right now because increasingly if your computer systems are down, your business is down.

It’s going to become quickly apparent that they’re going to need some specialists to really get things up and running quickly and to minimize the damage not only to your business, but to the businesses of all of your customers who are also dependent on your systems.

Can Anyone Stop The Uberization Of The Economy?

In January 2020, Henry DeGroot, an Uber and Lyft driver and organizer with the Boston Independent Drivers Guild, walked into a room in one of the Brutalist concrete buildings near Boston’s city hall that was about the size of a closet and free of windows – “The depths of bureaucracy,” he said.

Massachusetts Bill H.1234, backed by Uber, Lyft, and other app companies, states that drivers are independent contractors who are not “Entitled to some of the protections of an employee.” In exchange, the bill creates portable benefit accounts that the companies would have to pay into and that could be used for health care or paid leave.

“There’s a lot of industries that look at what happened with Prop 22 and recognize that if in a progressive state like California you can roll back workers’ rights for only $200 million, there’s a lot of room to roll back labor protections in many other industries,” said Tyler Sandness, an organizer with Rideshare Drivers United in California.

Immediately after Prop 22 passed in California, they put forward their own legislation, a Drivers Bill of Rights that was written by drivers.

A key advantage of the bill of rights, the organizers say, is that it sidesteps the debate over whether or not drivers are employees, and with it the internal divisions over the issue between drivers who do and don’t want to be treated like employees.

BIDG runs ads on Facebook to catch drivers’ attention, and every time she orders food through DoorDash or takes an Uber, Griffith hands the worker her card.

Jerome Gage used to pick the days and times to drive for Uber and Lyft in Los Angeles that worked for him.

Uberization Of The Field Force Management In Utilities

When one brings up field force management, the picture that comes to mind is large new tech companies that depend on customer centricity for the service delivery.

Every utility company needs a large skill diverse field work force in their asset management and service management departments.

Typically, a layered stack with customer management systems at the core and strap on layers of service management and field force management software’s Like Salesforce, etc.

The model eliminates the need of hierarchical processes of allocation and reconciliation by digitising it and empowering the field force to regulate the flow of jobs within the system.

Careful side by side analysis of the process flows of conventional way and Uberised process flow reveal that the new process simply eliminates the need for several steps through field force empowerment and E2E digitisation.

Field force in utilities comprises of workers who know their work inside out.

By learning from cross industry trends, and adopting some of them to digitally transform experiences of field workers will help utilities make the right step change in terms of creating better employee experiences, and of productivity.

The Uberization Of Work: Pros And Cons Of The Gig Economy

About the “Uberization” of work, how the gig economy is affecting workers now, and their opinions on what needs to change for the future.

“If you’re a kid going through college, if you’re retired or if you’re a single mum, you’ve never had it better,” says Steven Power, the global president of Deputy and enthusiasticial entrepreneur, “You can drive Uber, you can do TaskRabbit, you can work when and where you want-it’s a very flexible way of working.” Working on your own terms, with your own hours and earning your own wage has been a dream since the inception of the office and “Office hours.” An increasing number of people work primarily in gig economy roles-working two or three jobs and still finding time to focus on their own pursuits.

“The power is moving more towards the employee,” says Power, “SMEs are finding it bloody hard to recruit waiters and waitresses, because nobody wants to do that anymore, they want to work Thursday night, they don’t want to work Fridays, and there is so much choice out there for workers now.”

Temporary, irregular work may be a boon for those looking for extra money on the side or with unpredictable schedules, but there is a huge middle class that relies heavily on gig work, cannot afford instability, and are not getting fairly paid for the amount of work they are doing.

For the disenfranchised middle working “Two or three jobs and changing one every six months”, gig work does not offer the job security needed for planning a proper life, and does not allow for a sense of pride or belonging that many full-time positions provide.

“Google now employs more contractors than full-time employees.,” Power notes, “And this creates a second class of workers, sub-Googlers, that aren’t getting any benefits despite working for one of the most successful companies in the world.” Apart from undermining the stability of individual workers, the erosion of the middle working class for the benefit of corporate profits represents a “Profound change” in our society, according to Power, “And we should ask ourselves at what cost this change in work is happening.” This situation is becoming all too common, as multi-national organizations that profit from the labor of gig economy contractors are operating in a legal and ethical grey area.

Gig economy work, whether you love it or loathe it, is here to stay-but maybe we need to curb its influence in the strained middle, change our idea of fixed employment to suit a digital age, and leave a smaller portion of the market to earn as much or as little as they wish.

The Uberization Of Private Jets Might Be Here To Stay

It now includes the rich flying around in private jets.

The writing had been on the wall for the light-jet line for some time, as buyers shifted toward heavier private planes.

Analysts at Jefferies expect private aircraft deliveries to rise 10% this year, after a 24% decline in 2020, led by light and medium-size jets.

Even some middle managers are taking private jets for the first time, charter firms say.

Ohio-based NetJets, which offers fractional ownership of private planes, experienced a threefold increase in new customers last year, almost all of them through card services that allow customers to buy flight hours in 25-hour increments.

For the rich and their private jets the Uber model may be the new reality.

Appeared in the February 16, 2021, print edition as ‘Ride-Hailing for Jets Is Likely Here to Stay.’.
