DESRI Developing Current Largest Solar + Storage Project In Northern California

North American renewable energy producer D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments and the Sacramento Municipal Utility District are planning the California utility’s first solar + storage project, sized at 200 MWAC and 400 MWh. The project is the largest combined solar + storage generation facility announced in northern California under PPA contract at this time and will be located in eastern Sacramento County.

The project is expected to reach commercial operation no later than 2024 and will provide SMUD’s customers with a long-term supply of local renewable energy.

Now, a Belgian startup ART Robotics has developed a system called Helios that addresses this issue by combining a flying hexacopter and a robot that crawls directly up and down solar panels.

How does it work? The hexacopter flies up toward the solar panel carrying the robot with it on its back.

Using a rotating brush and a vacuum, the robot goes on to clean all the solar panels.

At that stage, the robot autonomously sends a wireless signal to the hexacopter which then returns to the solar panel to pick up the robot and carry it back to its initial location.

With the possibility that declining fuel prices have hit bottom, fleet managers are turning to fuel hedging as insurance to control fuel spend, the second highest fleet cost behind depreciation, because low prices may inevitably rise in the not-to-distant future.

Hundreds Of Bakeries Shut In Sri Lanka After Cooking Gas Runs Out

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – Nearly 1,000 bakeries have closed in Sri Lanka due to a severe shortage of cooking gas, an industry association said on Monday, March 7, as the impact of dwindling foreign exchange reserves ricochets through the country’s economy.

The cooking gas shortage has almost doubled bread prices to about 150 rupees in some urban areas, NK Jayawardena, chairman of the Ceylon Bakery Owners Association, said.

The gas shortage is also hitting small restaurants and households, with dozens of cooking gas retailers forced to suspend business due to lack of supplies.

“Normally we get about 100 gas canisters every two days. Since last Monday we haven’t got any,” cooking gas retail outlet owner Danusha Gunewardene told Reuters.

A senior official at Laugfs Gas, one of Sri Lanka’s two gas suppliers, said imports were stalled because banks were declining to open letters of credit.

The company typically sources about 15,000 tons of gas from Qatar and Oman a month worth $50 million.

Sri Lanka is due to receive two diesel shipments on Monday and another later this week, which is expected to partly ease the fuel shortage, Energy Ministry Secretary KDR Olga said.

Railways: On ‘Mission Hungry For Cargo’, Railways Mapping Mining Districts For Higher Freight Transport Share

The Railways is mapping the mining districts across the country to connect them with the rail network in a bid to bite into a bigger slice of the freight transportation pie, officials told.

Under its ‘Mission Hungry for Cargo’ initiative, the Railways is targeting a 45 per cent modal share in freight transportation from the current 27 per cent.

These include Tinsukia, with a production capacity of 0.62 MT, Raiganj 17 MT, Korba, 111 MT and Dantewada 23 MT. The products include coal, iron ore and bauxite limestone which the Railways wants to transport at competitive pricing.

Official figures show the national transporter’s market share in transporting goods has been consistently reducing and it has been losing its dominance to other modes of transport like road and even waterways.

The Railways has instructed its Business Development Units across zones to go into detail about each major commodity in their areas and make all-out efforts to not only bring back the freight cargo but also add new products to their basket, officials said.

“The idea of mapping these mineral-rich areas is to ensure that we get to transport them on rail. The surveys will identify the nearest railhead to the mine and if there aren’t any then we can lay the tracks there.”

“The plan is to make railways not only the cheapest but the most convenient transporter of such goods,” said a senior railway official.

Dr. Chris Mackie Resigns As MLHU Medical Officer Of Health

The Middlesex-London Health Unit announced Monday that Dr. Chris Mackie, who has been on a leave of absence for unspecified reasons, has resigned his role as medical officer of health.

The health unit said the resignation took effect last Friday, March 4, and that Mackie is leaving to “Pursue other opportunities.”

The resignation took effect the day after a special confidential meeting of the board of health was held, with Mackie in attendance.

Little has been shared about the circumstances surrounding Mackie’s leave since it was announced in November, with associate medical officer of health Dr. Alex Summers taking over his role as acting medical officer of health.
