Amorphous Silicon

Amorphous silicon is the non-crystalline form of silicon used for solar cells and thin-film transistors in LCDs. Used as semiconductor material for a-Si solar cells, or thin-film silicon solar cells, it is deposited in thin films onto a variety of flexible substrates, such as glass, metal and plastic.

Amorphous silicon cells generally feature low efficiency, but are one of the most environmentally friendly photovoltaic technologies, since they do not use any toxic heavy metals such as cadmium or lead. As a second-generation thin-film solar cell technology, amorphous silicon was once expected to become a major contributor in the fast-growing worldwide photovoltaic market, but has since lost its significance due to strong competition from conventional crystalline silicon cells and other thin-film technologies such as CdTe and CIGS. Amorphous silicon is a preferred material for the thin film transistor elements of liquid crystal displays and for x-ray imagers.

The density of amorphous Si has been calculated as 4.90×1022 atom/cm3 at 300 K. This was done using thin strips of amorphous silicon.

Amorphous silicon has been used as a photovoltaic solar cell material for devices which require very little power, such as pocket calculators, because their lower performance compared to conventional crystalline silicon solar cells is more than offset by their simplified and lower cost of deposition onto a substrate.

A-Si cells use only a fraction of the silicon needed for typical c-Si cells, and the cost of the silicon has historically been a significant contributor to cell cost.

Micromorphous silicon module technology combines two different types of silicon, amorphous and microcrystalline silicon, in a top and a bottom photovoltaic cell.

Rather than fabricating the transistors from silicon, that is formed into a crystalline silicon wafer, they are made from a thin film of amorphous silicon that is deposited on a glass panel.

The use of stacked multijunction cells based on a-Si:H and a-SiGe:H has led to record amorphous silicon-based cells.

As for the solar cells, by using a single-junction cell with a homogenous microstructure, a stabilized efficiency of = 10% on texture-etched ZnO:Al has been obtained.

Since the first observation of doping in a-Si:H and subsequent demonstration of solar cells, there was high expectation that a-Si:H solar cells will dominate the photovoltaic market.

Multijunction cells, where several cells can be stacked together, allow the use of individual cells with thin layers and achieve better stability.

A triple-junction cell structure where the middle and bottom cells use hydrogenated amorphous silicon-germanium alloys of different germanium content has already been commercialized.

As for the solar cells, by using a single junction cell with a homogenous microstructure, a stabilized efficiency of ?=10% on texture-etched ZnO:Al has been obtained.

Reported stabilized efficiencies for a-Si/µc-Si tandem cells are approaching 12.5%. The highest confirmed efficiency for tandem submodules based on a-Si/µc-Si is 11.4%. For triple-bandgap a-Si/a-SiGe/µc-Si:H cells, a world record initial efficiency of 15% for thin film silicon PV technology has been obtained, using optical enhancement techniques, such as textured back reflectors and in some cases also intermediate selectively reflecting layers.

Abstract While crystalline silicon FET’s are the key enablers for the integrated circuit field, amorphous silicon thin film transistors are the key semiconductor of the largearea electronics field, also known as “Macroelectronics.” This talk reviews the basic properties of amorphous silicon, and then outlines research trends, driven in large part by new applications.

About 10% of the silicon orbitals do not form bonds with other silicon atoms, but nearly all of these form bonds to atomic hydrogen, which reduces the density of residual dangling bonds and states in the band gap to ~1016 cm-3.

A-Si is used in devices typically deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition from silane at ~300 oC. Although a-Si has no long range order like a crystal, in device-grade a-Si most silicon atoms still have bonds to four neighboring silicon atoms.

Surprisingly, these bonds have a bond length and an angle between bonds close to those in crystalline silicon, despite the lack of long range The main driver of amorphous silicon to date has been its role as the switch to control pixel addressing in Active Matrix Liquid Crystal displays are scanned sequentially while the data for each pixel in a row is provided by the vertical data columns.

Simplified schematic description of how the addition of hydrogen to the PECVD process can improve the quality of a-Si:H. By adjusting the PECVD process, it is then possible that as the film grows, nano-sized nuclei of crystalline silicon may form within the amorphous matrix, or that vapour-phase epitaxial growth occurs on top of the crystalline nuclei to form “Nanocrystalline” silicon [5,6]. Because the nanocrystalline material is on the top of the film, to take advantage of its higher mobility, top-gate structures are required.

The absorption occurs in the crystalline silicon, and the large a-Si:H bandgaps can help reduce the minority carrier recombination at contacts, increasing the open circuit voltage.

Conclusion TFT’s with the semiconductor hydrogenated amorphous silicon have been the key electronic References P.G. LeComber and W.E. Spear, Phys.

If hydrogenated amorphous silicon or other thin-film technologies are to compete directly with the c-Si standard, they must achieve conversion efficiencies of ~14%. Currently none of these technologies have such performance.

3.2 Thin-film-Si-based materials and devices We apply the term TF-Si to represent silicon-based PV devices other than a-Si:H and wafer-based c-Si. In general, it applies to nanocrystalline-Si films that are > 80% crystalline.

Key Hurdles to High-Volume Manufacturing The most limiting factor to large-scale production of a-Si:H as low-cost PV is relatively low conversion efficiencies relative to other PV technologies.

Further studies on these combined technologies may even bring new device physics knowledge.

Conclusions Although we have focused on several of the “Issues” with a-Si and TF-Si PV technologies, they have many big advantages versus other thin films and bulk c-Si. For example, being the lowest substrate temperature process of the PV technologies, there is less energy consumption during manufacturing.

Architects are very concerned with the aesthetics of their buildings, and PV systems that “Look good” are most easily manufactured using a-Si and TF-Si technologies.

BIPV is a large market that may eventually account for ~50% of the total area of installed PV. In the short term, BIPV is a significant market for a-Si and TF-Si technologies, even while efficiencies remain significantly lower than c-Si. Currently, c-Si technologies are achieving economies of scale to allow them to be cost competitive to a-Si and TF-Si technologies, in spite of the energy intensive process and device thickness in excess of 200 µm. However, if PV is to go from the MW manufacturing capacity to the GW scale, such thick devices will lose that advantage and thin-film Si will be the logical choice: thin to reduce the cost of the bulk semiconductor and Si because of its abundance over exotic materials used in other thin-film technologies.

12.1.2 Designs for Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells: A Guided Tour Figure 12.1 illustrates the tremendous progress over the last 25 years in improving the efficiency of amorphous silicon-based solar cells.

The solar photons are mostly absorbed in the much thicker intrinsic layer; each photon that is absorbed will generate one electron and one hole photocarrier [12, 13]. The photocarriers are swept away by the built-in electric field to the n-type and p-type layers, respectively – thus generating solar electricity! The use of a pin structure for a-Si:H-based solar cells is something of a departure from solar cell designs for other materials, which are often based on simpler p-n structures.

According to a 2003 Forbes article, “Ovshinsky said the switch would compete with silicon crystalline transistors, and in the space of a day ECD stock shot from $57 to $150. The transistor never made much money and the company’s stock never returned to those heights, but Ovshinsky did manage to get the word Ovonics into the dictionary.” A less exotic application of ECD technology developed in the 1960s was chemical vapor deposition, followed later by physical vapor deposition coating techniques.

ECD attracted the attention of IBM, which in 1972 provided funding for research in erasable Ovonic recording devices, work that would one day lead to optical laser disks but not aid ECD in developing a viable product and turning a profit.

In 1976 the company struck a deal with 3M to distribute rewritable microfilm, prompting Ovshinsky to tell Forbes at the time, “We’re finally moving to become a profit-oriented company.” In 1979 3M canceled the deal when the six prototype file machines ECD delivered failed to meet specifications and 3M demanded back its advance payment, which according to Barron’s ECD kept.

The company did manage to turn a profit in 1981, but that was due to a $3 million payment from Standard Oil of Ohio connected to one of two joint ventures, Sovonics Solar Systems and Sovonics Solar Technology, the two companies set up to continue ECD’s research in solar cells.

Not only were ECD batteries safer, they stored more energy than competing batteries.

ECD also attracted the attention of Robert Stempel, former chairman and chief executive officer of General Motors Corporation, ousted in a boardroom coup after a 34-year career at GM. A trained engineer, Stempel joined ECD as an adviser in 1993 and became ECD’s chairman in 1995, bringing with him stature and contacts that led to more joint venture partners, who were also greatly influenced by the credibility ECD received by the Big Three bestowing their blessing on the company.

In 2000 ECD formed a joint venture with Texaco Energy Systems Inc. called Texaco Ovonic Fuel Cell Co. LLC, to develop regenerative fuel cell technology.

What Is Programming Language

As we know, to communicate with a person, we need a specific language, similarly to communicate with computers, programmers also need a language is called Programming language.

A programming language is a computer language that is used by programmers to communicate with computers.

The advantage of machine language is that it helps the programmer to execute the programs faster than the high-level programming language.

Procedural Oriented programming language is used by a software programmer to create a program that can be accomplished by using a programming editor like IDE, Adobe Dreamweaver, or Microsoft Visual Studio.

Middle-level programming language lies between the low-level programming language and high-level programming language.

A middle-level programming language’s advantages are that it supports the features of high-level programming, it is a user-friendly language, and closely related to machine language and human language.

Dennis M Ritchie develops it in 1972 at AT&T. It is a combination of both low-level programming language as well as a high-level programming language.

Programming Language

Current directions include security and reliability verification, new kinds of modularity, and database integration such as Microsoft’s LINQ. Fourth-generation programming languages are computer programming languages that aim to provide a higher level of abstraction of the internal computer hardware details than 3GLs. Fifth-generation programming languages are programming languages based on solving problems using constraints given to the program, rather than using an algorithm written by a programmer.

Conversely, Scheme contains multiple coherent subsets that suffice to construct the rest of the language as library macros, and so the language designers do not even bother to say which portions of the language must be implemented as language constructs, and which must be implemented as parts of a library.

Natural language programming has been proposed as a way to eliminate the need for a specialized language for programming.

Although most of the most commonly used programming languages have fully open specifications and implementations, many programming languages exist only as proprietary programming languages with the implementation available only from a single vendor, which may claim that such a proprietary language is their intellectual property.

Some programming languages exist on the border between proprietary and open; for example, Oracle Corporation asserts proprietary rights to some aspects of the Java programming language, and Microsoft’s C# programming language, which has open implementations of most parts of the system, also has Common Language Runtime as a closed environment.

Combining and averaging information from various internet sites, stackify.com reported the ten most popular programming languages as: Java, C, C++, Python, C#, JavaScript, VB.NET, R, PHP, and MATLAB. A dialect of a programming language or a data exchange language is a variation or extension of the language that does not change its intrinsic nature.

In broad strokes, programming languages divide into programming paradigms and a classification by intended domain of use, with general-purpose programming languages distinguished from domain-specific programming languages.

Guide To Programming Languages

Computer programming languages allow us to give instructions to a computer in a language the computer understands.

Just as many human-based languages exist, there are an array of computer programming languages that programmers can use to communicate with a computer.

The portion of the language that a computer can understand is called a “Binary.” Translating programming language into binary is known as “Compiling.” Each language, from C Language to Python, has its own distinct features, though many times there are commonalities between programming languages.

There are dozens of programming languages used in the industry today.

C Language is a structure-oriented, middle-level programming language mostly used to develop low-level applications.

Forums C++. C++ is a general purpose, object-oriented, middle-level programming language and is an extension of C language, which makes it possible to code C++ in a “C style”.

The Blackberry OS is developed using C++.The newest Microsoft Office suite was developed using C++.Features:Often the first programming language taught at college level.

What Is Programming Language?

The term Programming Language is made up of two different words namely Programming and Language.

Language A language is defined as the set of all possible strings, words or sentences that can be derived from a given alphabet to connect with computers.

A programming language can create desktop applications, websites, and mobile applications.

The first programming language anticipates the devices.

In 1948, Konrad Zuse advertised a paper about its programming language Plankalkul.

In the 1950s the first three modern programming languages, whose descendants are still in widespread use today were created.

Some other programming languages, developed during the 1950s and 1960s include Regional Assembly Language, ALGOL58, APL, Simula, BASIC, and PL/I. The duration from the late 1960s to the late 1970s carries a major flowering of programming language.

The 9 Best Programming Languages To Learn In 2021

Go. One of the core languages favored by Google, Go is the little language that could.

Python has a variety of applications that make it a versatile, powerful option when choosing the best programming language for your use case.

C# uses a syntax that’s similar to other C-derived languages such as C++, so it’s easy to pick up if you’re coming from another language in the C family.

Rust is a bit of an upstart among the other languages on this list, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a valuable language to learn.

The best programming languages to learn in 2021 are likely the same ones that were best to learn in 2017 and 2018, and that will continue to be true for the next several years as well.

Although the field of computer programming changes rapidly, the languages that we’ve discussed above have a great deal of staying power.

When beginning your journey into coding, only you can answer the question of the best programming language to learn.

What Is Programming Language?

Unlike normal languages, keywords in programming languages are limited, and by combining these keywords, developers are able to create different types of programs.

So what is programming language? In short, a programming language is the set of instructions through which humans interact with computers.

Back-end development is where the magic happens and there are many options to choose from when it comes to a programming language, you can stick to Javascript just like in front-end development, or go with PHP, Ruby, C#, Elixir, Python, Erlang.

Learning programming languages primarily requires dedication and practice, you can not become a programmer without writing code.

After getting familiar with programming and basic concepts, you can pick up the field and language you like and search for resources.

This earns Javascript the first place as the most popular programming language of all, followed by Java, then Python.

Github’s 2017 Octoverse showed similar results with Javascript being the most popular language, followed by Python, Java, then Ruby.Any questions/doubts on programming languages? Feel free to ask in comments.

2022 French Presidential Election

The first round of the 2022 French presidential election will be held on 10 April 2022.

The election will take place just before the 2022 legislative election, that will be held on 12 June with runoffs on 19 June, to elect the 577 members of the National Assembly, the lower house of the French Parliament.

She previously ran in the 2012 presidential election and 2017 presidential election as the party’s candidate, then called the National Front.

He previously ran in the 2012 presidential election for the Left Front and in the 2017 presidential election for La France Insoumise.

Voting For Human Rights: A Guide For 2022

Elections give voters an opportunity both to exercise their human rights – to freely choose their representatives and to freedom of opinion and expression – and to promote human rights for all.

A human rights voter should support candidates who want the government to adopt and enforce laws that promote and protect everyone’s human rights.

Voters should consider what a candidate’s campaign platform says about key human rights issues and support candidates who will push for policies that enable everyone to have the same opportunities to pursue their fundamental rights in France and who will defend human rights abroad. As candidates seek your vote, here are some basic human rights questions you should consider.

The prohibition on discrimination infuses all international human rights law, and core international human rights treaties include a provision protecting the rights they address without distinction of any kind, including on grounds such as race, color, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.

The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights recognize that in the context of serious public emergencies threatening the life of the nation, restrictions on some rights can be justified when they have a legal basis, are strictly necessary, and are neither arbitrary nor discriminatory in application.

Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union provides that the European Union was built on a foundation of shared values of “Respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities.”

Governments need to defend respect for human rights globally through robust human rights diplomacy.

French Election Polls: Who Is Leading The Race To Be The Next President Of France?

France will vote to elect a new president in April, and the list of competitors became clearer on Saturday with the nomination of the centre-right Les Républicains party’s candidate, Valérie Pécresse.

Some of the politicians hoping to be candidates will by then have withdrawn from the field, but in 2017 11 candidates were on the official ballot.

A first round is to be held on 10 April, and in the likely event that no candidate receives a majority of the votes, a second round runoff will be held two weeks later, featuring the two leading candidates from the first round.

Polls have shown that the most likely candidates to enter the run-off are Macron and Le Pen, the leader of the far-right Rassemblement National party.

France’s current president shook up the country’s political scene in 2017 when he ran without the backing of a major party and won.

Le Pen, in her third bid to be president, is campaigning on the party’s traditional line of curbing immigration and ‘keeping France for the French’.

As presidential candidate for the Socialist party, she has highlighted her working-class, immigrant roots, promising to improve salaries, notably for teachers.

Post Idea #8: Harmonized sales tax

Harmonized Sales Tax Definition

Canada’s harmonized sales tax is a consumption tax paid by local consumers and businesses.

The vendor collects the tax proceeds by adding the HST rate to the cost of goods and services and then remits the collected tax to the Canada Revenue Agency, the tax division of the federal government.

Prior to the HST’s introduction in 1997, Canadian sales taxes were divided into the federal sales tax and the provincial sales tax.

The concept behind the HST was to streamline the recording and collection of federal and provincial sales taxes by combining them into a single, consistent levy across the country.

In practice, the HST can often complicate companies’ lives instead. While the aim was to create a national sales tax, the Canadian government made adoption of the HST optional-and many provinces opted not to, keeping their separate systems and rates instead. As a result, businesses operating across provincial lines or nationwide-either in physical locations or via e-commerce-have to deal with disparities in tax rates, depending on whether the customer is based in an HST province or a GST/PST province.

Each province established its own percentage for PST collection and harmonized it with the GST when it joined the HST program.

A zero-rated commodity or service is one that has an HST tax rate of 0%. These include products like basic groceries, books, and many agricultural and fishery goods.

Harmonized Sales Tax: What Is It?

Harmonized sales tax is a consumer tax that combines the Canadian federal goods and services tax and provincial sales tax.

Not all Canadian provinces collect the HST. Your sales tax rate-and type of sales tax-will depend on where you are in the country.

Harmonized sales tax is a retail consumption tax levied at the point of sale.

It adds a percentage of the sales price to the transaction, which the business collects and then remits to the CRA. In Canada, sales taxes were traditionally divided into the federal sales tax and the provincial sales tax.

Each province has its own rates, resulting in significant differences in the sales tax rate across the country.

Manitoba GST 5% & RST 7% The provincial sales tax is known as retail sales tax.

Sales taxes do not apply to sales of goods and services to jurisdictions outside of Canada.

Harmonized Sales Tax

The introduction of the HST changed the PST for these provinces from a cascading tax system, which has been abandoned by most economies throughout the world, to a value-added tax like the GST. To help maintain revenue neutrality of total taxes on individuals, the Canadian government and the participating provincial governments have accompanied the change from a cascading tax to a value-add tax with a reduction in income taxes, and instituted direct transfer payments to lower-income groups.

In 1996, three of the four Atlantic provinces – New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Nova Scotia – entered into an agreement with the Government of Canada to implement what was initially termed the “Blended sales tax” which would combine the 7% federal GST with the provincial sales taxes of those provinces; as part of this project, the PST portion of the new HST in these provinces dropped from 10% to 8%. The result was a 15% combined tax when the federal GST was added.

The report concluded that “Unless you are among the 15 per cent of families with an income under $10,000 a year, you’re paying more sales tax under the HST than you would under the PST/GST: On average about $350 per family.” The report also predicted that by 2020, the HST is anticipated to result in a BC economy that will “Be $2.5 billion larger than it would be under the PST. That’s about $480 per person or $830 per family.” British Columbia residents voted in a referendum in August 2011 to repeal the HST, resulting in the province reverting to the former PST/GST model, with rates of 7% and 5% respectively, on April 1, 2013.

A separate report from the Roger Martin task force on the economy found the HST would lower taxes overall as “Increased revenue from the harmonized sales tax is matched by reductions in corporate and personal taxes and by tax credits. The effect is revenue loss.” The Globe and Mail reporting on the study found that the “Ontario government will actually lose revenue.” In a report by researcher David Murrell for the Canadian Centre for Policy Studies, the net impact of the tax was expected to be “Modestly progressive” for the poorest households to upper-middle-income families while increasing taxes by $320 in British Columbia and $290 in Ontario.

Only 39% of the public believed the HST would be beneficial for businesses whereas the Task Force on Competitiveness, Productivity and Economic Progress concluded that a harmonized sales tax would reduce administrative costs for small businesses and lead to reduction in taxes, as they would recover sales taxes they would have paid on goods and services they purchased.

The ruling BC Liberals had campaigned in favour of the HST since its introduction the previous year, noting it would be too costly to return to the original GST/PST system; they pointed to the money they would have to pay back to Ottawa, the lost tax revenue, and the amount it would cost taxpayers to have to switch back and forth between tax systems.

The provincial government committed to exempting some items while critics noted that electricity would see an increase from 5% GST to 14% HST; prior to the HST, electricity was not taxed by the PST. The HST was introduced to Prince Edward Island on April 1, 2013 which dropped the tax on goods to 14% from 15.5% and raised the tax on services from 5% to 14%. In Ontario, the HST increased tax on gasoline and diesel from 5% to 13%. In British Columbia, the HST applied on motor fuel and diesel but the 7% provincial portion was refunded at the point of sale, meaning the effective tax would remain at 5%, the rate of the GST. PST was only applicable to goods, whereas HST is generally applicable to both goods and services.

Harmonized Sales Tax

While the Harmonized Sales Tax generally applies to cannabis products, purchases of most forms of recreational cannabis are not eligible for the Ontario First Nations HST point-of-sale rebate.

Medical cannabis purchases continue to be eligible for a rebate of the 8% Ontario portion of the HST, as long as they meet all the rebate criteria.

Ontario provides relief on the 8% provincial portion of the HST on specific items through a point of sale rebate.

Although the HST replaced the 5% federal goods and services tax and the 8% retail sales tax on July 1, 2010, RST still applies to certain premiums of insurance and benefits plans and on private purchases of specified vehicles.

Boats and aircraft purchased outside Ontario and brought into Ontario for use may be subject to the 8% Ontario portion of the HST. ServiceOntario centres cannot accept payment of the 8% Ontario portion of the HST for boats and aircraft.

First Nation individuals with a status card, bands and band councils of an Ontario First Nations reserve are eligible for a point-of-sale rebate from paying the 8% Ontario portion of the HST for qualifying off-reserve purchases.

Where a supplier does not provide the rebate at the point-of-sale, purchasers may apply to the Ministry of Finance for a rebate by completing an Application for Rebate of the Ontario Portion of the Harmonized Sales Tax for First Nations.

What Is HST?

The HST is a combination of the General Sales Tax and the Provincial Sales Tax.

While the federal government wanted to instate the HST as a federal sales tax, it caused a stir in some provinces.

What Provinces Does the HST Occur In? If you’re a business in Canada, it’s important to know what provinces the HST occurs in.

Post Idea #9: Zero liquid discharge

Zero Liquid Discharge

Creating zero discharge solutions can be accomplished by concentrating the effluent using various techniques, including membrane-based and multiple effect evaporation-based systems, and recovery and recycling of water.

Hence ZLD is a cycle of closed loop with no discharge.

Since ZLD systems can be integrated onto interplant water network systems either as central or distributed units, assessing the presence of both scenarios allow for cost-optimal designs to be identified.

Cutting down brine discharge may be achieved by sending brine wastewater streams produced by Stage 2 treatment units for further ZLD processing.

Usually, high-quality water and concentrate brine are obtained in ZLD desalination processes, through the reduction of liquid contents in the shale gas wastewater.

ZLD operation is ensured by a design constraint that specifies the discharge brine salinity close to salt saturation conditions.

To reduce undesirable impacts of direct brine disposal on the environment, it can be mixed with cooling waters of power plant, municipal wastewaters before release in water bodies or direct discharge in seawater.

Zero Liquid Discharge Water Treatment Technology

The drivers for zero liquid discharge include a growing concern by the public about the impact of such discharges on the environment, and in many areas of the world, water is a scarce resource.

Even without regulatory push, many companies in various industries are mandating initiatives for reducing water discharge by recycle reuse, as well as ZLD, to reduce their environmental footprint and improve sustainability.

Zero liquid discharge can be achieved in various ways.

The system objectives for a zero liquid discharge system are to eliminate a liquid waste water discharge, generate solids for landfill disposal or reuse, and to recycle a high-quality water that can be beneficially reused.

Careful consideration of waste water chemistry is needed for the successful design and operation of a zero liquid discharge system.

A sound water chemistry design basis is key to successful zero liquid discharge design.

In a zero liquid discharge system, the waste water being processed is concentrated to solubility limits of the dissolved salts.

Zero Liquid Discharge

Zero Liquid Discharge is a treatment process designed to remove all the liquid waste from a system.

ZLD systems employ advanced wastewater/desalination treatment technologies to purify and recycle virtually all of the wastewater produced.

The conventional way to reach ZLD is with thermal technologies such as evaporators, multi effect distillation and mechanical vapor compression, forward osmosis and membrane distillation.

The energy consumption values are the average of 13 comparative studies on ZLD technologies ranging from 2002 to 2017.

Clarifications are needed for ED/EDR, FO and MD. 1) ED/EDR SEC depends on the salinity of the feed as higher salinities require higher SECs, 2) FO SEC depends on the Draw Solution and the Regeneration Method.

90% of the thermal energy needed can be acquired by waste heat if it’s available, 3) MD SEC depends on the configuration.

90% of the thermal energy needed can be acquired by waste heat if it’s available and finally 4) the total electrical equivalent was taken using the following, Total El. Equivalent = El. Energy + 0.45 x Thermal Energy due to modern power plant efficiency.

What Is Zero Liquid Discharge & Why Is It Important?

Many industrial processes require water, and then reduce the availability of water for the environment or other processes, or alternately contaminate and release water that damages the local environment.

Although the history of tighter regulations on wastewater discharge can be traced back to the US Government’s Clean Water Act of 1972, India and China have been leading the drive for zero liquid discharge regulations in the last decade.

Due to heavy contamination of numerous important rivers by industrial wastewater, both countries have created regulations that require zero liquid discharge.

In Europe and North America, the drive towards zero liquid discharge has been pushed by high costs of wastewater disposal at inland facilities.

Tong and Elimelech suggested that, “As the severe consequences of water pollution are increasingly recognized and attract more public attention, stricter environmental regulations on wastewater discharge are expected, which will push more high-polluting industries toward ZLD.”.

Another important reason to consider zero liquid discharge is the potential for recovering resources that are present in wastewater.

Regardless of an organization’s motivations to target zero liquid discharge, achieving it demonstrates good economics, corporate responsibility and environmental stewardship.

What Is Zero Liquid Discharge And How Does It Work?

If a facility is located on a site that has severe water scarcity issues and/or astronomical discharge fees, it might be worthwhile to pursue, but in the instances it’s not mandated, careful consideration must be made as to whether or not it will benefit your facility.

If your facility does require or is considering it, you might be wondering, “What is zero liquid discharge and how does it work?”.

A ZLD treatment system utilizes advanced technological water treatment processes to limit liquid waste at the end of your industrial process to, as the name suggests, zero.

Pretreatment is used to remove simple things from the wastewater stream that can be filtered or precipitated out, conditioning the water and reducing the suspended solids and materials that would otherwise scale and/or foul following treatment steps.

In a very slow settling process, the water rises to the top and overflows at the perimeter of the clarifier, allowing the solids to settle down to the bottom of the clarifier into a sludge blanket.

The RO train will capture the majority of dissolved solids that flow through the process, but as mentioned in a prior article about common problems with ZLD, it’s important to flow only pretreated water through the RO system, as allowing untreated water to go through the semipermeable membranes will foul them quickly.

The leftover waste then goes from an evaporator to a crystallizer, which continues to boil off all the water until all the impurities in the water crystallize and are filtered out as a solid.

Zero liquid discharge is an engineering approach to water treatment where all water is recovered and contaminants are reduced to solid waste.

While many water treatment processes attempt to maximize recovery of freshwater and minimize waste, ZLD is the most demanding target since the cost and challenges of recovery increase as the wastewater gets more concentrated.

Recycle water on site, lowering water acquisition costs and risk.

Several methods of waste management are classified as zero liquid discharge, despite using different boundaries to define the point where discharge occurs.

Some engineers describe their designs as near-zero liquid discharge or minimal liquid discharge to highlight that they discharge low levels of wastewater, but do not eliminate liquid in their waste.

What Is Zero Liquid Discharge?

Zero liquid discharge is a treatment process that converts wastewater to recycled water and solids, leaving zero discharge at the end of the treatment cycle.

The end product of a zero liquid discharge system is a solid residue of precipitate salts that needs to be transferred to a solid waste disposal facility, such as a landfill.

The process dates back to the 1970s, when the increased salinity of the Colorado River led to a regulatory mandate of zero liquid discharge for nearby power plants.

Zero liquid discharge continues to be adopted at power plants in the power industry.

Due to stricter regulations for wastewater disposal, zero liquid discharge systems have become more widely used.

A zero liquid discharge system can assist with rising water costs and droughts.

Zero liquid discharge involves high capital expenditures and running costs, as well as high energy consumption, which leads to significant emission of greenhouse gases.

Israeli New Shekel

The Israeli new shekel, also known as simply the Israeli shekel, is the currency of Israel and is also used as a legal tender in the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

The new shekel has been in use since 1 January 1986, when it replaced the hyperinflated old shekel at a ratio of 1000:1.

The currency sign for the new shekel is a combination of the first Hebrew letters of the words shekel and ẖadash.

The official international currency code of the Israeli new shekel is ILS, as set by the International Organization for Standardization under ISO 4217.

The law did not come into effect until February 1980, when the Israeli government decided to change the monetary system and introduce the shekel at a rate of 1 shekel = I£10.

After inflation was contained as a result of the 1985 Economic Stabilization Plan, the new shekel was introduced, replacing the old shekel on 1 January 1986 at a rate of IS 1,000.

To ₪1. Since the economic crisis of the 1980s and the subsequent introduction of the new shekel in 1985, the Bank of Israel and the government of Israel have maintained much more careful and conservative fiscal and monetary policies, and have gradually introduced various market-based economic reforms.

Yellow Corporation

Yellow Corporation is an American transportation holding company headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas.

In 1968, the company name was changed from Yellow Transit Freight Lines to Yellow Freight System Inc. During the deregulation of interstate trucking in the 1980s, Yellow Freight System embarked on a massive restructuring by creating new distribution centers across the country to better serve customers.

The company changed its name to Yellow Corporation in 1992, when it created a parent company, with Yellow Transportation, Inc. as its largest division.

A new holding company, Yellow Roadway Corporation, was formed based at Yellow’s headquarters in Overland Park to serve as the parent company for both Roadway Corp. and Yellow Corp. The purchase announcement came less than a year after the bankruptcy of the nation’s then-third largest LTL carrier, Consolidated Freightways, meaning the Yellow-Roadway merger would leave the industry with a major gap from Yellow Roadway’s estimated over US$6 billion.

Yellow Corp. posted a 2003 revenue of $3.07 billion, and Yellow Roadway Corp. had a 2004 revenue of $6.8 billion.

The operations of USF Logistics were absorbed into Yellow Roadway’s logistics unit, Meridian IQ. Yellow Roadway also made forays into the international market, particularly China, expanding beyond its existing Canadian operations through Reimer.

In March 2009, Yellow Transportation and Roadway formally merged to create YRC Inc. and Yellow Canada’s operations were merged into Reimer Express to become YRC Reimer.

Post Idea #14: Quarter-to-date

Related Articles – Summarized

Quarter-To-Date Definition

Quarter-to-date is a time interval that captures all relevant company activity that occurred between the beginning of the current quarter and the point at which the data was gathered later in the quarter.

Quarter-to-date information is typically gathered in situations when the entire quarterly period has not yet ended, and it can allow management to see how the quarter is shaping up.

Because there are 12 months in a year, there are four quarters: first quarter, second quarter, third quarter, and fourth quarter.

To determine how a company is performing during a given quarter, management may want to pull up data from the beginning of the quarter for a certain area to gauge how it has performed thus far.

A company may have a target revenue of $5 million for the quarter.

A QTD analysis is typically only for internal use rather than for external use because the Securities and Exchange Commission does not require companies to report information before a quarter has ended.

There are not many QTD comparisons between companies because management may pull information at different times within a quarter.

Definition & Example

Quarter to date refers to the three-month period extending from the beginning of the quarter to the end of the quarter.

In the finance world, quarter 1 usually spans January 1-March 31; quarter 2 usually spans April 1-June 30; quarter 3 usually spans July 1-September 30; and quarter 4 usually spans October 1-December 31.

Let’s assume Company XYZ’s first quarter began on January 1 and ends on March 31.

For the three months of the first quarter, we can calculate that Company XYZ’s quarter-to-date revenue is $4,500,000.

Quarter-to-date information is useful in looking for trends or measuring performance against goals.

Comparing quarter-to-date information among companies with different fiscal-year start dates can distort an analysis: The time included may vary and seasonal factors.

It is also important to remember that the extra day in leap years may distort quarter-to-date comparisons.

Quarter-to-date is a period starting at the beginning of the current quarter and ending at the current date.

Quarter-to-date is used in many contexts, mainly for recording results of an activity in the time between a date and the beginning of either the calendar or fiscal quarter.

In the context of finance, QTD is often provided in financial statements detailing the performance of a business entity.

Providing current QTD results, as well as QTD results for one or more past quarters as of the same date, allows owners, managers, investors, and other stakeholders to compare the company’s current performance to that of past periods.

The quarter to date return for the stock is 8%. This means from the beginning of the current quarter until the current date, stock has appreciated by 8%. Comparing QTD measures can be misleading if not much of the quarter has occurred, or the date is not clear.

QTD measures are more sensitive to early changes than late changes.

Example: QTD outgoing shipments for March 3 January shipments— 800,000 lbs February shipments– 750,000 lbs March shipments—- 50,000 lbs QTD shipments 1,600,000 lbs.

Quarter-To-Date Financial Definition Of Quarter-To-Date

A term used to describe any information for the current quarter up to the current date.

If the quarter goes from January 1 to March 31 and today’s date is February 5, any QTD statement includes information from January 1 to February 5.

This will enable you to analyze data on a month level.

In this chapter, you will learn how to create Quarter-to-Date measures and how to carry out data analysis with the same.

Super Sport

Super Sport, or SS, is the signature performance option package offered by Chevrolet on a limited number of its vehicles.

In December 1956, Chevrolet unveiled a show car based on the first generation Corvette called the Corvette Super Sport.

In early 1957, the Chevrolet Corvette SS debuted – a custom built racing sports car that was the first Chevrolet to wear the SS badge.

The package included Super Sport trim for both the interior and exterior, chassis reinforcements, stronger springs and shocks, power brakes, spinner wheel covers, and narrow-band whitewall tires.

For a short period of time in the early 1970s, a Holden Monaro-based “Chevrolet SS” model, similar in design, size and drivetrain to a Nova SS, was available in South Africa.

In 2003, Chevrolet released a concept car they named the SS. A rear wheel drive sports car with a modern 430 hp small-block V8 engine and race-tuned suspension, it was billed as “a modern interpretation of Chevrolet’s Super Sport heritage”.

Though never intended for production, the vehicle was used as a show car and to hint at what was ahead for Chevrolet sports car design.

2016 Chevrolet SS Quick Take Review

Although its official purpose is as a low-volume, aspirational car that gives Chevy’s SS NASCAR racer a legitimate connection to the street, the SS is much more than a token gesture to the left-turn crowd.

Manual-transmission cars like the one we drove for this review incur a $1000 gas-guzzler tax versus the standard automatic’s $1300 penalty; the EPA rates both versions at 14 mpg in the city, but opting for the manual grants the SS a 2-mpg boost on the highway to 22 mpg.

The SS looks a little less like a previous-generation Chevrolet Malibu on steroids for 2016, thanks to a revised front fascia with LED running lights, functional hood vents, and more tasteful 19-inch aluminum wheels that have dialed back on the bright-chrome look.

There have been some rumblings that a next-gen SS might be built in America, but GM has offered no indication that there actually will be a rear-drive successor to the current car; if that’s the case, Cadillac’s high-end V models would be the only hot-rod four-doors in the General’s fleet going forward.

The Chevy SS is one of the most underappreciated driver’s cars on the market, a lazy-day cruiser in the softest of its three drive modes yet equally at home on a challenging mountain road in its more aggressive settings.

Plus, Chevy has yet to lend us an SS for our annual 10Best Cars event.

Despite the SS’s low-volume status, GM evidently feels some pressure from its lack of popularity: As of this writing, Chevrolet offers a 20 percent discount on 2016 models, which would make our test car a 415-hp steal at $39,096.

If a pregnant woman who has been smoking chooses to use an e-cig and it helps her to quit smoking and stay smokefree, she should be supported to do so.” Based on the available evidence on e-cigarette safety, there was also “No reason to believe that use of an e-cig has any adverse effect on breastfeeding.” The statement went on to say, “Vaping should continue, if it is helpful to quitting smoking and staying smokefree”.

“Although the aerosol of e-cigarettes generally has fewer harmful substances than cigarette smoke, e-cigarettes and other products containing nicotine are not safe to use during pregnancy. Nicotine is a health danger for pregnant women and developing babies and can damage a developing baby’s brain and lungs. Also, some of the flavorings used in e-cigarettes may be harmful to a developing baby.”

Overall, the available evidence supports the cautionary implementation of harm reduction interventions aimed at promoting e-cigarettes as attractive and competitive alternatives to cigarette smoking, while taking measures to protect vulnerable groups and individuals.

There are also social concerns – use of e-cigarettes may normalize tobacco use and prolong cigarette use for people who could have quit instead, or it could put extra pressure on smokers to stop cigarette smoking because e-cigarettes are a more socially acceptable alternative.

The majority of toxic chemicals found in cigarette smoke are absent in e-cigarette vapor.

As cigarette companies have acquired the largest e-cigarette brands, they currently benefit from a dual market of smokers and e-cigarette users while simultaneously presenting themselves as agents of harm reduction.

On 1 June 2015, they introduced Juul a type of e-cigarette which delivers 10 times as much nicotine as other e-cigarettes, equivalent to an actual cigarette puff.

Gross Domestic Product

The sum of the gross value added in the various economic activities is known as “GDP at factor cost”.

If GDP is calculated this way it is sometimes called gross domestic income, or GDP. GDI should provide the same amount as the expenditure method described later.

GDP = compensation of employees + gross operating surplus + gross mixed income + taxes less subsidies on production and imports GDP = COE + GOS + GMI + TP & M – SP & MCompensation of employees measures the total remuneration to employees for work done.

GDP can be contrasted with gross national product or, as it is now known, gross national income.

GDP is product produced within a country’s borders; GNI is product produced by enterprises owned by a country’s citizens.

If 10% of GDP is being spent on buying hi-tech foreign arms, the number of weapons purchased is entirely governed by current exchange rates, since arms are a traded product bought on the international market.

The new formula deducted from GDP. In 2005, Med Jones, an American Economist, at the International Institute of Management, introduced the first secular Gross National Happiness Index a.k.a. Gross National Well-being framework and Index to complement GDP economics with additional seven dimensions, including environment, education, and government, work, social and health indicators.

Gross Domestic Product Definition

The GDP of a country tends to increase when the total value of goods and services that domestic producers sell to foreign countries exceeds the total value of foreign goods and services that domestic consumers buy.

Nominal GDP is divided by this deflator, yielding real GDP. Nominal GDP is usually higher than real GDP because inflation is typically a positive number.

GDP Per Capita GDP per capita is a measurement of the GDP per person in a country’s population.

Per-capita GDP is often analyzed alongside more traditional measures of GDP. Economists use this metric for insight into their own country’s domestic productivity and the productivity of other countries.

While GDP measures the economic activity within the physical borders of a country, gross national product is a measurement of the overall production of people or corporations native to a country, including those based abroad. GNP excludes domestic production by foreigners.

At the time, the preeminent system of measurement was GNP. After the Bretton Woods conference in 1944, GDP was widely adopted as the standard means for measuring national economies, although ironically, the U.S. continued to use GNP as its official measure of economic welfare until 1991, after which it switched to GDP. Beginning in the 1950s some economists and policy-makers began to question GDP. Some observed, for example, a tendency to accept GDP as an absolute indicator of a nation’s failure or success, despite its failure to account for health, happiness, equality, and other constituent factors of public welfare.

What Is a Simple Definition of GDP? Gross domestic product is a measurement that seeks to capture a country’s economic output.

Meaning, Types, Examples

The two common ways to calculate gross domestic product are nominal and real.

The gross domestic product is a crucial aspect in establishing the gross national income.

Gross domestic product is not the same as the gross national product, which refers to all the final production from the resources owned by the residents of a country.

Countries worldwide follow the international standard set by the European Commission, International Monetary Fund, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the World Bank, and the United Nations to compute their gross domestic product.

A country with a higher gross domestic product will have a higher living standard.

What Is It & When Do You Pay It?

A capital gains tax is a tax you pay on the profit made from selling an investment.

You don’t have to pay capital gains tax until you sell your investment.

How much you pay in taxes depends in part upon whether you made a short-term or long-term capital gain on your investment, and each is taxed in different ways.

Short-term capital gains are taxed as ordinary income, such as the income tax you pay on your salary, at your standard federal income tax rate.

As of 2021, the long-term capital gains tax is typically either zero, 15 or 20 percent, depending upon your tax bracket.

Higher Capital Gains Tax Rate Exceptions Taxable portions of the sale of certain small business stocks are taxed at a 28 percent maximum rate.

Talking with a professional tax advisor can help you take full advantage of strategies to legally reduce your capital gains tax bill.

Capital Gains Tax Definition

The tax rates for long-term capital gains are consistent with the trend to capital gains being taxed at lower rates than individual income, as this table demonstrates.

After applying the $250,000 exemption, this person must report a capital gain of $50,000, which is the amount subject to the capital gains tax.

Capital losses can be deducted from capital gains to yield your taxable gains for the year.

The calculations become a little more complex if you’ve incurred capital gains and capital losses on both short-term and long-term investments.

That’s wise because the tax you will pay on long-term capital gains is generally lower than for short-term gains.

Use Any Excess in Capital Losses in Other Ways Capital losses will offset capital gains and effectively lower capital gains tax for the year.

The current capital gains tax of most investments is 0%, 15%, or 20% of the profit, depending on your overall income.

2021-22 Capital Gains Tax Rates And Calculator

In 2021 and 2022, the capital gains tax rates are either 0%, 15% or 20% for most assets held for more than a year.

Capital gains tax rates on most assets held for less than a year correspond to ordinary income tax brackets.

The short-term capital gains tax rate equals your ordinary income tax rate – your tax bracket.

Our capital gains tax calculator can help you estimate your gains.

The difference between your capital gains and your capital losses is called your “Net capital gain.” If your losses exceed your gains, you can deduct the difference on your tax return, up to $3,000 per year.

The capital gains tax rates in the tables above apply to most assets, but there are some noteworthy exceptions.

Whenever possible, hold an asset for a year or longer so you can qualify for the long-term capital gains tax rate, since it’s significantly lower than the short-term capital gains rate for most assets.

5 Things You Should Know About Capital Gains Tax

Anyone who sells a capital asset should know that capital gains tax may apply.

The tax bite from short-term gains is significantly larger than that from long-term gains – typically 10-20% higher.

People in the lowest tax brackets usually don’t have to pay any tax on long-term capital gains.

Capital losses from investments-but not from the sale of personal property-can be used to offset capital gains.

If you have $50,000 in long-term gains from the sale of one stock, but $20,000 in long-term losses from the sale of another, then you may only be taxed on $30,000 worth of long-term capital gains.

If you have more than $3,000 in excess capital losses, the amount over $3,000 can be carried forward to future years to offset capital gains or income in those years.

If you operate a business that buys and sells items, your gains from such sales will be considered-and taxed as-business income rather than capital gains.

2021 And 2022 Capital Gains Tax Rates – Forbes Advisor

The amount you owe in capital gains taxes depends in part on how long you owned the asset: Long-term capital gains are from an asset you’ve held for more than one year, and short-term capital gains apply to profits from selling an asset you’ve held for less than a year.

Capital losses from investments can be used to offset your capital gains on your taxes.

Like gains, capital losses come in short-term and long-term varieties and must first be used to offset capital gains of the same type.

If you have long-term capital losses, they must first be used to offset any long-term capital gains.

If you realize long-term capital gains from the sale of collectibles, such as precious metals, coins or art, they are taxed at a maximum rate of 28%. Remember, short-term capital gains from collectible assets are still taxed as ordinary income.

Net investment income includes capital gains from the sale of investments that haven’t been offset by capital losses-as well as income from dividends and interest, among other sources.

If you have net investment income from capital gains and other investment sources, and a modified adjusted gross income above the levels listed below, you will owe the tax.

2022 Capital Gains Tax Calculator

The IRS taxes capital gains at the federal level and some states also tax capital gains at the state level.

There are short-term capital gains and long-term capital gains and each is taxed at different rates.

Depending on your regular income tax bracket, your tax rate for long-term capital gains could be as low as 0%. Even taxpayers in the top income tax bracket pay long-term capital gains rates that are nearly half of their income tax rates.

To recap: The amount you pay in federal capital gains taxes is based on the size of your gains, your federal income tax bracket and how long you have held on to the asset in question.

Why the difference between the regular income tax and the tax on long-term capital gains at the federal level? It comes down to the difference between earned and unearned income.

Most states tax capital gains according to the same tax rates they use for regular income.

Fire Sprinkler

A fire sprinkler or sprinkler head is the component of a fire sprinkler system that discharges water when the effects of a fire have been detected, such as when a predetermined temperature has been exceeded.

In buildings protected by properly designed and maintained fire sprinklers, over 99% of fires were controlled by fire sprinklers alone.

Henry S. Parmalee of New Haven, Connecticut created and installed the first automatic fire sprinkler system in 1874, using solder that melted in a fire to unplug holes in the otherwise sealed water pipes.

Fire sprinkler application and installation guidelines, and overall fire sprinkler system design guidelines are provided by the National Fire Protection Association 13, 13D, and 13R and enforced by local jurisdictions.

The fusible element either melts or has a frangible liquid-containing glass bulb that breaks, causing the water pressure in the fire sprinkler piping to push a plug out of the sprinkler orifice, resulting in water spraying from the orifice.

“The concept is that fast response of sprinklers can produce an advantage in a fire if the response is accompanied by an effective discharge density – that is, a sprinkler spray capable of fighting its way down through the fire plume in sufficient quantities to suppress the burning fuel package.” The sprinkler that was developed for this concept was created for use in high rack storage.

ESFR sprinkler heads were developed in the 1980s to take advantage of the latest fast-response fire sprinkler technology to provide fire suppression of specific high-challenge fire hazards.

Fire Sprinkler Systems: A Beginner’S Guide

A fire sprinkler system is a simple, but key, active component of a domestic or commercial building’s fire protection system.

In a wet pipe fire sprinkler system, the most common type in residential buildings, cold water is stored under pressure in the pipes and is released immediately by sprinkler heads when the predetermined heat level is reached.

Deluge sprinkler systems are typically used in areas where rapid fire damage is a major concern, such as warehouse loading bays and high-rise buildings.

A fire sprinkler head is the component of a sprinkler system that discharges water when the fire has been detected.

Only sprinklers above the fire will operate, maximising water pressure over the fire and reducing fire and water damage to the building.

Fire sprinkler systems control, or put out, 99% of fires in buildings where they are installed.

The design of sprinkler protection systems and design have changed relatively little over time, surely this would emphasise their effectiveness? Speaking outside the Sprinkler and Suppression Zone at FIREX 2019, Cox also challenges some of the myths that persist around sprinklers.

Reliable fire sprinklers are built with the designer and installer in mind, helping you protect lives and preserve property in even the most challenging situations.

Reliable sprinklers have been designed and assembled in the United States since 1920 and are suitable to protect a wide range of applications, including Commercial, Residential, Storage, and Special Applications.

Reliable sprinklers are available in a wide variety of finishes, temperature ratings, and styles.

Stainless steel or specially coated sprinklers are also available with third-party approvals and listings for corrosion resistance.

Reliable sprinklers carry approvals and listings from internationally-recognized testing laboratories including Underwriters Laboratories, FM Approvalsl, the Loss Prevention Certification Board, and VdS. Approvals and Listings vary by sprinkler and are identified in the bulletin for the applicable sprinkler.

Institutional Investor

An institutional investor is a company or organization that invests money on behalf of other people.

An institutional investor buys, sells, and manages stocks, bonds, and other investment securities on behalf of its clients, customers, members, or shareholders.

Institutional investors face fewer protective regulations compared to average investors because it is assumed the institutional crowd is more knowledgeable and better able to protect themselves.

Institutional investors have the resources and specialized knowledge for extensively researching a variety of investment opportunities not open to retail investors.

Since institutional investors can move markets, retail investors often research institutional investors’ regulatory filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission to determine which securities the retail investors should buy personally.

Because of the nature of the securities and the manner in which transactions occur, some markets are primarily for institutional investors rather than retail investors.

Retail investors typically buy and sell stocks in round lots of 100 shares or more; institutional investors are known to buy and sell in block trades of 10,000 shares or more.

Overview, Types, Investing Risks

An institutional investor is a legal entity that accumulates the funds of numerous investors to invest in various financial instruments and profit from the process.

Institutional investors include the following organizations: credit unions, banks, large funds such as a mutual or hedge fund, venture capital funds, insurance companies, and pension funds.

A mutual fund is a pool of money collected from many investors for the purpose of investing in stocks, bonds, or other securities.

Institutional investors can access and know how to explore a variety of investment instruments not available for private investors.

An institutional investor can also buy assets but is oriented more on long-term investing.

If individuals work as retail investors, institutional investors are more likely to conduct wholesale purchases.

Understanding the risks that institutional investors face is very important.

What Is An Institutional Investor?

An institutional investor is an entity like a bank, insurance company, or broker-dealer that can invest large sums of money for their own portfolio or for portfolios they manage.

In contrast, a retail investor is generally a typical individual investor who invests only for their own portfolio.

An institutional investor is an organization like a bank or insurance company that invests large sums of money toward its own financial goals or for portfolios it manages.

A high-net-worth investor can allocate to some types of institutional investors.

While you may not be an institutional investor, chances are an institutional investor has played a role in your finances, whether it be your bank providing you financial services, an insurance company providing your policy, or a pension fund providing your retirement payments.

An institutional investor can affect an individual investor’s portfolio more directly when they are managing an individual’s investments along with other investors’ portfolios.

If you have invested in a mutual fund, your returns will depend on how well the institutional investor manages the fund’s holdings.

What Is An Institutional Investor?

If you buy shares in a mutual fund, you’re giving your money to an institutional investor.

Mutual funds, hedge funds, pension funds, index funds, commercial banks, REITs, endowments and insurance companies are all institutional investors.

Some institutional investors buy shares in a company with the intent of becoming vocal shareholders, while other institutional investors are passive investors and do not take an interest in the running of the companies in which they invest.

Today, the volume of trades by retail investors pales in comparison to the trading activity of institutional investors.

While you may not be an institutional investor yourself, chances are there’s one investing money on your behalf.

If you’re saving for retirement in a 401(k) or you’ve invested your nest egg in mutual funds, your money is being handled by an institutional investor.

If you’ve got a pension coming your way, those funds are invested by an institutional investor.

Institutional Investor Definition & Example

An institutional investor is an organization, rather than an individual, that invests on behalf of the organization’s members.

Institutional investors are the biggest component of the so-called ‘smart money.

There are generally six types of institutional investors: pension funds.

Most institutional investors in the U.S. are regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Institutional investors must file a Form 13F with the SEC to report their quarterly holdings; they must also file a Form 13G if they own more than 5% of a company’s stock.

Institutional investors have the resources to do extensive research on wide-ranging investment.

Institutional ownership of specific securities can be found on many financial websites or in Investor’s Business Daily.

Institutional Investor

An institutional investor is an entity which pools money to purchase securities, real property, and other investment assets or originate loans.

Although institutional investors appear to be more sophisticated than retail investors, it remains unclear if professional active investment managers can reliably enhance risk-adjusted returns by an amount that exceeds fees and expenses of investment management, due to issues with limiting agency costs.

In the United States, institutional investors are generally eligible to purchase private placements under Rule 506 of Regulation D as “Accredited investors”.

Further, large US institutional investors may qualify to purchase certain securities generally restricted from retail investment under Rule 144A. In Canada, companies selling to accredited investors can be exempted from regulatory reporting by each of the provincial Canadian Securities Administrators.

As intermediaries between individual investors and companies, institutional investors are important sources of capital in financial markets.

China’s program to allow institutional investors to invest in its capital market is called Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor.

In India, the term Foreign Institutional Investor is used to refer to foreign companies investing in India’s capital markets.

Globally, climate change is expected to threaten food production and certain aspects of food quality, as well as food prices and distribution systems.

Prices are expected to rise in response to declining food production and associated trends such as increasingly expensive petroleum.

Second, food insecurity increases with rising food prices.

Other factors, such as agricultural practices, food distribution systems, and consumer food choices, also play key roles.

USDA supports global food security through in-country capacity building, basic and applied research, and support for improved market information, statistics and analysis.

With 870 million people around the world who do not have access to a sufficient supply of nutritious and safe food, establishing global food security is important not only to hundreds of millions of hungry people, but also to the sustainable economic growth of these nations and the long-term economic prosperity of the United States.

The McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program supported the education, child development, and food security of more than 16 million of the world’s poorest children.

In 2011, the annual Food Security Assessment was expanded to include 77 countries; completed assessments of agricultural statistics and market information in 10 Feed the Future countries and identified key areas where improvement is needed; and conducted in-depth assessments of the capacity of the statistical systems of Ghana, Haiti, Tanzania, and Bangladesh.

In the targeted Feed the Future countries and regions, nearly 60,000 individuals have received USDA agricultural productivity or food security training, 7 critical policy reforms have been adopted with USDA assistance, and $20 million in microloans have been disbursed.

In 2010, the U.S. helped launch the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program, an international, multilateral trust fund that has already awarded $658 million to finance country development plans in 18 low-income countries, with 8.2 million beneficiaries.

Under Feed the Future, research investments specifically designed for global food security have more than doubled, from $50 million in 2008 to $120 million in 2011.

Food Security

According to the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security, food security is defined as meaning that all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life.

At the 1974 World Food Conference, the term “Food security” was defined with an emphasis on supply; food security is defined as the “Availability at all times of adequate, nourishing, diverse, balanced and moderate world food supplies of basic foodstuffs to sustain a steady expansion of food consumption and to offset fluctuations in production and prices”.

The first World Food Summit, held in 1996, stated that food security “Exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.”

Based on respondents’ answers to survey questions, the household can be placed on a continuum of food security defined by the USDA. This continuum has four categories: high food security, marginal food security, low food security, and very low food security.

Per capita world food supplies are more than adequate to provide food security to all, and thus food accessibility is a greater barrier to achieving food security.

According to The Economist’s Global Food Security Index, overall food insecurity remains more severe in France than the United States despite higher nation-wide estimates of food waste in the U.S. Local efforts can directly help regional food security, particularly when residents become mindful of the juxtaposition of food insecurity in their communities with their own food waste at home.

Women play key roles in maintaining all four pillars of food security: as food producers and agricultural entrepreneurs; as decision-makers for the food and nutritional security of their households and communities and as “Managers” of the stability of food supplies in times of economic hardship.

What Is Food Security?

Food Security means that all people at all times have physical & economic access to adequate amounts of nutritious, safe, and culturally appropriate foods, which are produced in an environmentally sustainable and socially just manner, and that people are able to make informed decisions about their food choices.

Food Security also means that the people who produce our food are able to earn a decent, living wage growing, catching, producing, processing, transporting, retailing, and serving food.

At the core of food security is access to healthy food and optimal nutrition for all.

Food access is closely linked to food supply, so food security is dependent on a healthy and sustainable food system.

The Food Security Continuum helps to illustrate the complexity of food security and the various types of work that can be done to address some of the food security challenges we face.

Food security networks such as FSN and Food Secure Canada;.

The key activity in this stage that FSN has undertaken are community-led food assessments, where communities identify the challenges and opportunities they face in regards to food security in order to develop community based action plans.

International Food Policy Research Institute

Food security, as defined by the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security, means that all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life.

Over the coming decades, a changing climate, growing global population, rising food prices, and environmental stressors will have significant yet uncertain impacts on food security.

Adaptation strategies and policy responses to global change, including options for handling water allocation, land use patterns, food trade, postharvest food processing, and food prices and safety are urgently needed.

IFPRI’s work on food security includes analysis of cash transfers, promotion of sustainable agricultural technologies, building resilience to shocks, and managing trade-offs in food security, such as balancing the nutritional benefits of meat against the ecological costs of its production.

IFPRI’s research on this topic is closely aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 1, SDG 2, and SDG 3.

Nigeria – Inequality plays a huge role in food insecurity in Nigeria.

Liberia – Much of the food insecurity in Liberia stems from difficulties relating to the country’s 13-year civil war, which ended in 2001.

Mozambique – Mozambique had made great improvements in food security at points in the last decade.

Timor-leste- One-third of the people in Timor-leste suffer from food insecurity.

Chad – Climate change and the need for emergency food assistance in Chad have contributed to widespread food insecurity.

Food Security And Why It Matters

The global food security challenge is straightforward: by 2050, the world must feed 9 billion people.

The United Nations has set ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture as the second of its 17 Sustainable Development Goals for the year 2030.

Why is food security such a major global challenge?

The complexity of delivering sufficient food to a national population and to the whole world’s population shows why food security is such a priority for all countries, whether developing or developed.

As people become more affluent they start eating food that is richer in processed foods, meat and dairy.

At current rates, the amount of food we’re growing today will feed only half of the population by 2050.

Troubled farmers – in developed countries, less than 2% of people grow crops or breed animals for food.

World Food Programme – An Overview Researched and Compiled by Elga Zalite, Stanford University Library The World Food Programme is the food assistance branch of the United Nations and it is the world’s largest humanitarian organization addressing hunger, with over 14 500 staff, 90 per cent of whom work in developing countries.

Iv In 2007, the World Food Programme joined forces with YUM! Brands, the world’s largest restaurant company, to launch the first annual World Hunger Relief Week, a global campaign to increase awareness about hunger, engage volunteers, and raise critically needed funds to help WFP serve the world’s areas of greatest need.

Part of the response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake consisted of distributing food aid to women as experience built up over almost 5 decades of working in emergency situations has demonstrated that giving food to women helps to ensure that it is spread evenly among all household members.

World Food Program USA works to solve global hunger, building a world where everyone has the food and nutrition needed to lead healthy, productive lives.

Another ctiticism: WFP people as an organisation are in the absurd situation of, on the one hand, being dedicated to the fight against hunger while, on the other hand, being faced with unemployment where hunger actually eliminated WFP answers too easily to the calls of the corrupted governments, and supplies too much of food aid leading to reduction of the production of local farmers as no one can compete with the UN’s World Food Program.

Dividing a charity’s average program expenses by its average total functional expenses yields this percentage.

4.6%. As reported by charities on their IRS Form 990, this measure reflects what percent of its total budget a charity spends on overhead, administrative staff and associated costs, and organizational meetings.

Part of our goal in rating the financial performance of charities is to help donors assess the financial capacity and sustainability of a charity.

We check the charity’s last two Forms 990 to see if the charity has reported any diversion of assets.

Charity Navigator looks to confirm on the Form 990, or for some metrics on the charity’s website, that the organization has these policies in place.

Charity Navigator does not cross-check the Board members listed on the website with that reported on the Form 990, because the latter often isn’t available until more than a year after the charity’s fiscal year ends.

Charity Navigator does not cross-check the leadership listed on the website with that reported on the Form 990 because the latter often isn’t available until more than a year after the charity’s fiscal year ends.

A123 Systems

A123 systems is a developer and manufacturer of lithium iron phosphate batteries and energy storage systems.

BAE Systems announced that, from 2008, it would offer A123 Systems’ lithium-ion battery technology as part of its HybriDrive Propulsion System used in the 2008 version of the Daimler Orion VII hybrid electric buses.

In January 2009, A123 systems applied to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing Loan Program for US$1.84 billion in direct loans to support the construction of new lithium-ion battery manufacturing facilities in the United States, locating the first plant in southeast Michigan near Detroit.

In August 2012, Chinese automotive components manufacturer Wanxiang Group agreed to invest up to $465 million to acquire as much as 80% of A123 Systems; but the acquisition was not completed before A123 filed for bankruptcy.

On January 28, 2013, Wanxiang America purchased the preponderance of A123’s assets out of bankruptcy for $256.6M and organized A123Systems, LLC. An earlier statement, released by A123 Systems in early October, said that it had entered an asset purchase agreement with Johnson Controls, with the stipulation that the company’s bid must be approved by a US bankruptcy court and could be topped by a rival bidder.

In March 2018, the US battery manufacturer Lithium Werks announced it took over the Chinese factory of A123 Systems in Changzhou, plus the workforce and clients base in China, Europe and the United States.

Embattled Battery Co. A123 Systems Charged With $2M Lien In Michigan

A123 Systems LLC, a Michigan-based energy storage manufacturer and developer, was hit with a $2,079,519 construction lien on July 15.

The lien claimant, Morgan/Harbour Construction, alleges A123 has failed to pay the multi-million dollar amount for labor and materials provided as part of improvements made to the battery company’s new headquarters in Novi, Michigan.

Consistent with Michigan’s construction lien laws, the lien will be effective for one year, during which time Morgan/Harbour will need to either release the lien or file a foreclosure action, a litigation A123 is already facing.

On June 8, subcontractor Doublejack Electric Co., Inc. filed a foreclosure in Oakland County court against A123 Systems pursuant to a lien arising from work completed on March 4, 2020.

A123 is not inexperienced when it comes to legal actions on financial liabilities.

A123’s transition into the Novi headquarters, which began at the end of 2018, was part of a consolidation effort which saw the closure of its Livonia and Romulus, Michigan facilities, matched by the elimination of hundreds of jobs.

The new Novi headquarters, envisioned as an “Epicenter of engineering” that “Grows our engineering workforce” by A123 Systems CEO Jason Forcier, is now plagued by a foreclosure action and a multi-million dollar lien filing, dampening its new-facility sheen and building on its embattled financial history.
