Traffic safety is a priority for SGI and the Safe Driver Recognition points program is meant to promote safe driving habits and deter individuals from riskier driving behaviour, which makes our roads safer for everyone.
The program balances financial penalties for poor driving behaviour and rewards safe driving with reduced rates.
For each demerit point on the negative side of the scale, the driver is charged $50. The penalties under the program are separate from any Ministry of Justice fines for the actual offence.
Drivers in the penalty zone represent a higher risk of collision and are therefore assessed financial penalties for incidents they are involved in.
The more traffic convictions and/or at-fault collisions a driver is responsible for, the lower the driver’s safety rating, and therefore the higher the financial penalty they must pay for each incident.
Drivers who remain in the penalty zone for three incident-free years, while holding an active driver’s licence, will automatically move out of the penalty zone and return to the neutral zone.
Drivers can begin to earn points towards a discount again provided they continue to practice safe driving habits.
Saskatchewan Government Insurance
Saskatchewan Government Insurance is a Canadian insurance company and a Crown corporation wholly owned by the Government of Saskatchewan.
SGI’s operations consist of the Saskatchewan Auto Fund, the compulsory public auto insurance program for Saskatchewan, and its property and casualty insurance division sells additional automobile and property insurance products in five Canadian provinces under the trade name SGI Canada.
Under the SGI Canada brand, SGI sells property and casualty insurance on properties such as homes, farms, businesses and automobile insurance in five Canadian provinces.
Under Premier Tommy Douglas, the government began to involve itself in many sectors of the economy, including insurance.
By the end of 1945, SGI had 60 employees and a small network of private, independent insurance brokers located across the province selling insurance on behalf of the corporation.
SGI and SGI CANADA are governed by The Saskatchewan Government Insurance Act, 1980, and The Automobile Accident Insurance Act, and are subject to the provisions of The Crown Corporations Act, 1993, which gives the Crown Investments Corporation, the holding company for Saskatchewan’s commercial Crown corporations, the broad authority to set the direction of the corporation.
SGI employs approximately 2,000 people and works with a network of almost 300 independent insurance brokers and about 450 motor licence issuers in Saskatchewan, as well as numerous brokers in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba and Ontario.
SGI Announces $100 Rebate For Registered Vehicles
Initial estimates from SGI place the total cost of the rebate for all registered vehicles and motorcycles at $95 million.
Saskatchewan Government Insurance is giving a rebate to people who had a registered vehicle as of March 9.
The rebate is coming from the auto fund and applies to all classes of registered vehicles and motorcycles, including private, commercial and farm, but excludes trailers and snowmobiles.
SGI said more than 700,000 rebate cheques will be issued in the coming weeks.
Customers with multiple registered vehicles will receive one cheque for all their registered vehicles.
SGI issuing customers one-time rebate of about $285 per vehicle in May. It’s the second straight year SGI has issued rebate cheques.
In 2021, SGI issued a rebate of roughly $285 per vehicle to registered vehicle owners.
SGI Offering Customers $100 Per Vehicle Rebate
Saskatchewan Government Insurance customers will be receiving a $100 rebate for each vehicle registered, the Crown corporation announced Thursday.
SGI said anyone with a vehicle registered as of March 9, 2022 will receive the rebate.
All classes of vehicles are eligible, while trailers and snow mobiles are not.
The initially estimated $95 million cost of the rebates will be taken from SGI’s Auto Fund Rate Stabilization Reserve, which acts as a rainy day fund.
“Our government is pleased to deliver this benefit back to the people of Saskatchewan,” Minister Responsible for SGI Don Morgan said.
“The Rate Stabilization Reserve has a surplus that was largely generated by its well-performing investment portfolio. We believe it’s fair that all Auto Fund customers benefit equally, regardless of how long their vehicle was registered or the premium they pay for that vehicle. All drivers are facing higher fuel costs, regardless of what they’re driving.”
SGI said it expects to prepare more than 700,000 rebate cheques over the next number of weeks.

Amazon.Com: Plastic Container
Plastic food containers keep perishables fresh for longer, saving you money in the long run by preventing food waste.
Uniform sizes in big packs are great for meal prepping for the week or more, depending on how many pieces are in each bundle.
Containers with lids allow you to store food in the fridge and take your meals to work, all without using disposable products like plastic wraps or foil.
If you need plastic food containers for storing leftover snacks, bulk grains, or even coffee beans, there are stackable models that look great on counters and fit well in pantries.
Take a look at some of the best brands here before you make a decision.
Plastic Container Manufacturers
Most plastic containers are made from some type of thermoplastic by standard plastic manufacturing processes.
In 2011, they represented a little over three-quarters of all plastic containers used within the U.S. Despite lacking a rigid structure, plastic wraps are also often considered part of the plastic container category.
Ironically, plastic bins are even used to recycle other plastic containers.
Currently, best solutions to the problem of plastic waste disposal and eliminating waste are increased usage of safer plastic products and continued research on alternatives to hydrocarbon-based plastics.
Some standard business considerations apply when searching for a plastic container supplier or plastic container manufacturer.
Thus, you should invest in finding a plastic container supplier with an experienced track record of high quality plastic production.
Because plastic’s main disadvantages are largely environmental, it is worth investigating your plastic container supplier’s level of commitment to mitigating these effects.
Plastic Container
Plastic containers are containers made exclusively or partially of plastic.
Plastic containers are ubiquitous either as single-use or reuseable/durable plastic cups, plastic bottles, plastic bags, foam food containers, Tupperware, plastic tubes, clamshells, cosmetic containers, up to intermediate bulk containers and various types of containers made of corrugated plastic.
The entire packaging industry heavily depends on plastic containers or containers with some plastic content, besides paperboard and other materials.
Food storage nowadays relies mainly on plastic food storage containers.
Because of the multitude of container applications, the types of plastic vary widely.
Plastic has replaced traditional materials like wood, paperboard, and metal for the manufacture of containers because of its price, moldability/formability, durability and light weight.
In the U.S., the industry is represented by the Society of the Plastics Industry, Closure & Container Manufacturers Association, Flexible Packaging Association, and others.
Manhattan Beach Store Sets Goal Of Reducing Single-Use Plastic, One Refillable Container At A Time – Daily Breeze
She and El Segundo resident Sarah Brockhaus have turned their personal sustainability mission into a business: In October 2019, right before the pandemic hit, Cochrane opened The Waste Less Shop – with Brockhaus later becoming a partner in the business – in the El Porto area of Manhattan Beach.
She and Brockhaus opened another The Waste Less store in Reno, Nevada, in November, though Brockhaus remained focused on the Manhattan Beach shop.
Beyond being a retail store the shops also aim to educate the community about sustainability, Brockhaus said.
Erica Summers, a Hermosa Beach resident, stopped by The Waste Less Shop, 3515 Highland Ave., on a recent Friday to refill her soap bottle.
The store offers products without the plastic packaging, like shampoo and conditioner bars.
Customer Kari Ayoob, an El Segundo resident, initially met Cochrane at the Hermosa Beach Sidewalk Sale and was eager for the store’s debut.
The Waste Less Shop educates the community by talking to customers at the store and by hosting events such as beach cleanups and workshops.

Speech Recognition
Neural networks have been used in many aspects of speech recognition such as phoneme classification, phoneme classification through multi-objective evolutionary algorithms, isolated word recognition, audiovisual speech recognition, audiovisual speaker recognition and speaker adaptation.
These standards require that a substantial amount of data be maintained by the EMR. The use of speech recognition is more naturally suited to the generation of narrative text, as part of a radiology/pathology interpretation, progress note or discharge summary: the ergonomic gains of using speech recognition to enter structured discrete data are relatively minimal for people who are sighted and who can operate a keyboard and mouse.
Substantial test and evaluation programs have been carried out in the past decade in speech recognition systems applications in helicopters, notably by the U.S. Army Avionics Research and Development Activity and by the Royal Aerospace Establishment in the UK. Work in France has included speech recognition in the Puma helicopter.
With discontinuous speech full sentences separated by silence are used, therefore it becomes easier to recognize the speech as well as with isolated speech.
The updated textbook Speech and Language Processing by Jurafsky and Martin presents the basics and the state of the art for ASR. Speaker recognition also uses the same features, most of the same front-end processing, and classification techniques as is done in speech recognition.
The most recent book on speech recognition is Automatic Speech Recognition: A Deep Learning Approach written by Microsoft researchers D. Yu and L. Deng and published near the end of 2014, with highly mathematically oriented technical detail on how deep learning methods are derived and implemented in modern speech recognition systems based on DNNs and related deep learning methods.
A related book, published earlier in 2014, “Deep Learning: Methods and Applications” by L. Deng and D. Yu provides a less technical but more methodology-focused overview of DNN-based speech recognition during 2009-2014, placed within the more general context of deep learning applications including not only speech recognition but also image recognition, natural language processing, information retrieval, multimodal processing, and multitask learning.
ScienceDirect Topics
From the perspective of the speech recognition model, the theory of the speech recognition system is based on pattern recognition.
The goal of speech recognition is to transform the input speech feature vector sequence into a sequence of words using phonetic and linguistic information.
According to the structure of the speech recognition system, a complete speech recognition system includes a feature extraction algorithm, acoustic model, and language model and search algorithm.
Nearly all techniques for speech synthesis and recognition are based on the model of human speech production shown in Fig.
Three annoyances are common in speech recognition systems: The recognized speech must have distinct pauses between the words.
Finally, the recent development in speech recognition has demonstrated superior performance of the deep neural network over the GMM in discriminating speech classes.
In a recent systematic comparison of studies of assistive technology access interfaces, speech recognition is reported as the quickest, averaging 15.4 WPM.Most modern operating systems provide a speech recognition dictation functionality: Siri Dictation on iOS and MacOS; Google Voice Typing; and Microsoft Dictate, for example.
What Is Speech Recognition? What Are Its Applications?
Rudimentary forms of speech recognition software will only be able to recognize a limited range of vocabulary and phrases, while more advanced versions will be able to pick up complex speech in a variety of language, accents, and dialects.
It is important to note that while many people may use voice recognition and speech recognition as two interchangeable terms, they are in fact two distinct processes.
While speech recognition is used to identify words in a particular spoken language, voice recognition aims to identify a speaker’s individual voice by using biometric technology.
Speech recognition works by using algorithms through language and acoustic modelling.
Natural language processing or NLP make the overall speech recognition process easier and take less time to institute.
Voice dialing, speech to text processing, call routing, and voice search features also function based upon speech recognition technology.
Speech recognition can also be found in computer word processing programs such as google docs or Microsoft word, where users can change and dictate what they want to show up as text.
Early methods focused on manual feature extraction and conventional techniques such as Gaussian Mixture Models, the Dynamic Time Warping algorithm and Hidden Markov Models.
Language models are important in order to recognize the output token from the classification model as well as to make corrections on the output text.
DNNs can be used directly to model the features and achieve great performance in speech recognition tasks.
The decoder network is an RNN-T model trained along with an LSTM language model that also predicts words.
The model can still have a good effect on long input sequences, so it is also possible for such models to handle speech input of various lengths.
The second module is a convolutional acoustic model with several convolutional layers, GELU activation function, dropout, and weight regularization and predicts the letters from the input.
Finally, there is a convolutional language model with 14 convolutional residual blocks and bottleneck layers.

Honda hasn’t been making the Integra for some time, more accurately, it’s been 16 years since the US market had an Acura Integra on sale.
After such a long hiatus, Honda has finally taken the covers off of the new 2022 Honda Integra in China.
Under the Acura brand, Honda plans to introduce the Integra again in the US market.
Honda first debuted the Integra back in the mid-80s and it arrived in the US in 1986 as the Acura Integra.
The second-generation Integra was the very first car by Honda to feature the iconic VTEC engine.
Seeing Honda take such a step with another new sedan/liftback with the Integra and not conceding like the others is a bold statement, helping to maintain the Integra’s integrity.
If this Chinese market Integra is a sign of things to come, we expect nothing but greatness from Honda and Acura in the future.

Honda fanatics celebrate the modified Civic and Integra phenomenon.
Mar 25, 2021Clicking into this story means you probably drove around, or sat shotgun, in a ’90s-era Honda Civic hatchback or Acura Integra at some point during your high school or college years.
The EF vs. DA event is one of many established by Instagram’s Old Skool Honda, a page dedicated to the Honda and Acura chassis of the ’80s and ’90s. The group recently organized a gathering for all Honda models, regardless of production year, in California.
One Mint 2nd-Gen IntegraIf you’re an Integra DA fan, then you’re likely very familiar with this Integra LS. As its original purchaser, this Integra’s owner made countless changes over an almost 30-year span with the car, including an Integra Type R swap.
One Mint IntegraThe cabin of this Integra LS defies logic.
Affordable VTECIn 1992, and again the following year, Acura released a limited number of Integra GS-Rs. The designation was spotted by its color-matched side and bumper moldings, model-specific wheel design, special trunk badging, and the word “VTEC” embedded in the front-fender moldings.
Old Integra, New HeartThis Integra’s original, non-VTEC engine now features Honda’s celebrated variable valve timing tech.

Honda Civic
The Honda Civic is a series of automobiles manufactured by Honda since 1972.
Initially gaining a reputation for being fuel-efficient, reliable and environmentally friendly, later iterations have become known for performance and sportiness, especially the Civic Type R, Civic VTi, Civic GTi and Civic SiR/Si.
The Civic has been repeatedly rebadged for international markets, and served as the basis for the Honda CR-X, the Honda CR-X del Sol, the Concerto, the first generation Prelude, the Civic Shuttle and the CR-V. As of 2020, the Civic is the sixth best-selling automobile in the world of all time, with over 18 million units sold since 1972.
Continuing in the sporty tradition of the original Civic SiR, Honda sold several similarly equipped variants of the fifth generation car, still referred to as the Civic SiR, in Japan, Asia and Europe.
Based on an all-new Honda compact global platform, the tenth-generation Civic marked the unification of the Civic range globally.
Other models have been built on the Civic platform, including Prelude, Ballade, CR-X, Quint, Concerto, Domani, CR-X Del Sol, Integra, and CR-V. Also, at various times, the Civic or Civic-derived models have been sold by marques other than Honda – for example, Rover sold the 200, 400 and 45, each of which were Civic-based at some point, as was their predecessor, the Triumph Acclaim, based on the first Honda Ballade.
The Honda Domani, an upscale model based on the Civic, was sold as the Isuzu Gemini in Japan, and confusingly the 5-door Domani was sold as the Honda Civic in Europe from 1995 to 2000.

DNA Microarray Technology Fact Sheet
When they were first introduced, DNA microarrays were used only as a research tool.
This has become possible because, just as is the case for computer chips, very large numbers of ‘features’ can be put on microarray chips, representing a very large portion of the human genome.
Microarrays can also be used to study the extent to which certain genes are turned on or off in cells and tissues.
In this case, instead of isolating DNA from the samples, RNA is isolated and measured.
Today, DNA microarrays are used in clinical diagnostic tests for some diseases.
Sometimes they are also used to determine which drugs might be best prescribed for particular individuals, because genes determine how our bodies handle the chemistry related to those drugs.
With the advent of new DNA sequencing technologies, some of the tests for which microarrays were used in the past now use DNA sequencing instead. But microarray tests still tend to be less expensive than sequencing, so they may be used for very large studies, as well as for some clinical tests.
DNA Microarrays: Types, Applications And Their Future
Nucleic acid arrays or more simply DNA arrays are a group of technologies in which specific DNA sequences are either deposited or synthesized in a 2-D array on a surface in such a way that the DNA is covalently or non-covalently attached to the surface.
It should be noted that the use of microarrays to measure the relative concentrations of nucleic acid sequences in solution is rapidly being supplanted by high throughput sequencing methods such as those discussed in Unit 7.8.The early history of DNA arraysOne could argue that the original DNA array was created with the colony hybridization method of Grunstein and Hogness.
An additional transfer of colonies to squares of Whatman filter paper followed by a growth, lysis, denaturation and fixing of the DNA to the filter, allowed the production of DNA arrays on filters that could be re-used multiple times.
The birth of the modern DNA arrayIn the late 90’s and 2000’s, DNA array technology progressed rapidly as both new methods of production and fluorescent detection were adapted to the task.
Poly-lysine coated glass microscope slides provided good binding of DNA and a robotic spotter was designed to spot multiple glass slide arrays from DNA stored in microtiter dishes.
Their method involved synthesizing DNA on small polystryrene beads and depositing those beads on the end of a fiber optic array in which the ends of the fibers were etched to provide a well that is slightly larger than one bead. Different types of DNA would be synthesized on different beads and applying a mixture of beads to the fiber optic cable would result in a randomly assembled array.
As a result of these advantages and the decreasing cost of sequencing, DNA arrays are being rapidly replaced by sequencing for nearly every assay that has been previously performed on microarrays Human Genome Initiative Genomics.
DNA Microarray
The human genome contains approximately 21,000 genes.
At any given moment, each of our cells has some combination of these genes turned on, and others are turned off.
How do scientists figure out which are on and which are off?
Scientists can answer this question for any cell sample or tissue by gene expression profiling, using a technique called microarray analysis.
Microarray analysis involves breaking open a cell, isolating its genetic contents, identifying all the genes that are turned on in that particular cell, and generating a list of those genes.
DNA microarray analysis is a technique that scientists use to determine whether genes are on or off.
Scientists know a gene is on in a cell if its mRNA is present.
ScienceDirect Topics
Probes are usually shared between multiple splice forms of the same gene, and unless specific array designs are employed, it is impossible to deconvolute the abundances of individual alternative transcript isoforms from overall gene expression.
Comparative study of biochemical composition of the gene product that is responsible for the disease with the proteins formed by the normal genes, helps researchers to synthesize drugs that can minimize the effect of such defective proteins.
DNA microarrays help in gene discovery, their expression profiling, their regulation, genetic disease screening, SNP discrimination, microbial detection and typing, and observe variation between transcript levels of genes under different conditions.
Each DNA microarray may contain tens of thousands of gene spots, and is therefore a powerful tool for the study of gene expression patterns on a genomic scale.
Supervised analysisStatistical methods to identify genes that are differentially expressed between groups of samples, as well as to find genes that can be used to accurately predict the characteristics of groups.
A green signal indicates relatively high gene expression in sample 1, a red signal indicates high gene expression in sample 2, a yellow signal indicates equivalent gene expression in both samples, and gray indicates lack of gene expression in both.
Specialized subsets of gene expression changes and quantitative real-time reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction-based approaches that focus on specific genes have also been developed.
DNA Microarray
A DNA microarray is a collection of microscopic DNA spots attached to a solid surface.
Fusion genes microarray A Fusion gene microarray can detect fusion transcripts, e.g. from cancer specimens.
Multi-stranded DNA microarrays Multi-stranded DNA and RNA microarrays can be used to identify novel drugs that bind to these multi-stranded nucleic acid sequences.
The two Cy-labeled cDNA samples are mixed and hybridized to a single microarray that is then scanned in a microarray scanner to visualize fluorescence of the two fluorophores after excitation with a laser beam of a defined wavelength.
This is an example of a DNA microarray experiment which includes details for a particular case to better explain DNA microarray experiments, while listing modifications for RNA or other alternative experiments.
The holes are sealed and the microarray hybridized, either in a hyb oven, where the microarray is mixed by rotation, or in a mixer, where the microarray is mixed by alternating pressure at the pinholes.
The “Minimum Information About a Microarray Experiment” checklist helps define the level of detail that should exist and is being adopted by many journals as a requirement for the submission of papers incorporating microarray results.

DNA Microarray: Principle, Types And Steps Involved In CDNA Microarrays
Introduction of DNA Microarray technique: Also termed as DNA chips, gene chips, DNA arrays, gene arrays and biochips.
DNA microarrays are solid supports usually made up of glass or silicon upon which DNA is attached in an organized pre-arranged grid design.
There are 2 types of DNA microarray i.e. cDNA based microarray and oligonucleotide based microarray.
Principle of DNA microarray: DNA microarray technology was originated from Southern blotting, in which fragmented DNA is attached to a substrate and then probed with a known DNA sequence.
The presence of one genomic or cDNA sequence in 1,00,000 or more can be screened in a single hybridization by using DNA microarray.
Hybridization: The labeled cDNAs from both the samples are placed on the DNA microarray which permits the hybridization of each cDNA to its complementary strand.

Knee Replacement
Knee replacement surgery – also known as knee arthroplasty – can help relieve pain and restore function in severely diseased knee joints.
In determining whether a knee replacement is right for you, an orthopedic surgeon assesses your knee’s range of motion, stability and strength.
Your doctor can choose from a variety of knee replacement prostheses and surgical techniques, considering your age, weight, activity level, knee size and shape, and overall health.
The most common reason for knee replacement surgery is to relieve severe pain caused by osteoarthritis.
People who need knee replacement surgery usually have problems walking, climbing stairs, and getting in and out of chairs.
Knee replacement surgery, like any surgery, carries risks.
Another risk of knee replacement surgery is failure of the artificial joint.
Knee Replacement Surgery: Procedure, Types And Risks
Knee replacement is where portions of the bones that form the knee joint are removed and replaced with artificial implants.
Most people who get this surgery have advanced knee arthritis, in which the knee cartilage is worn away and the surface of the knee becomes pitted, eroded, and uneven.
Knee replacement surgery can also help some people who have a weakened knee joint caused by an injury or other condition.
The implants used in knee replacement are smooth like the surfaces of a healthy knee.
A partial knee replacement is also known as unicompartmental knee arthroplasty or unicondylar knee arthroplasty.
Infection after knee replacement surgery is rare, but a knee replacement implant cannot defend itself from infection if bacteria are introduced to the body.

Knee Replacement Surgery Procedure
Knee replacement, also called knee arthroplasty or total knee replacement, is a surgical procedure to resurface a knee damaged by arthritis.
The goal of knee replacement surgery is to resurface the parts of the knee joint that have been damaged and to relieve knee pain that cannot be controlled by other treatments.
Knee replacement surgery is a treatment for pain and disability in the knee.
If medical treatments are not satisfactory, knee replacement surgery may be an effective treatment.
There may be other reasons for your doctor to recommend a knee replacement surgery.

Knee osteotomy is most commonly performed on people who are younger than 60 who are active.
Many people who undergo this procedure for arthritis might need a total knee replacement – usually about 10 to 15 years after the knee osteotomy.
Removing or adding a wedge of bone in your upper shinbone or lower thighbone can help straighten the bowing, shift your weight to the undamaged part of your knee joint and prolong the life span of the knee joint.
Your surgeon will study X-rays of your knee to determine if osteotomy is appropriate and how much correction of the deformity is needed.
The most common form of knee osteotomy involves the shinbone.
In most cases, knee osteotomy relieves arthritis pain and postpones the need for a total knee replacement by 10 to 15 years.

‘Survivor’ Alum Zeke Smith Reflects On Being Outed As Transgender On The Show
Zeke Smith, a “Survivor” contestant who was outed as transgender on the show in 2017, recently reflected on his experience, stating that he would have been less accepted if he were a Black transgender woman because “The show was unequivocally made through a white male lens.”
“I both played the game and was treated afterwards with an abundance of white-male privilege,” Smith said during a virtual panel on LGBTQ identity on “Survivor” organized by the Soul Survivor Organization and hosted by Rob Has A Podcast and The A.V. Club.”I think that because the show was unequivocally made through a white male lens, especially if you look historically at what we now know to be the culture of CBS,” he added.
Smith said this is the lens through which “Jeff makes the show.” By Smith’s account, Jeff Probst, the host and executive producer of “Survivor,” told him not to be concerned with how audiences might view him upon learning he’s transgender because Probst’s mother had a favorable view of Smith after viewing the episode where fellow contestant Jeff Varner, an openly gay man, outed Smith as trans.
Varner has since apologized to Smith and the trans community, calling what he did “Assault.”
At the same time, Smith questioned whether his story would have been received differently by the show’s audience and his fellow contestants if he did not present as a white male.
“I wonder if my story would have had the same impact that it had in opening people’s minds to transgender people if I were a Black trans woman,” Smith said.
Smith wrote a column in The Hollywood Reporter after the episode aired in which he discussed why he did not disclose his transition when he applied to the show, saying, “I wanted the show to desire me as a game player and an eccentric storyteller, not as ‘The First Trans ‘Survivor’ Player.'”.

Post Idea #17: Thyroid function tests
Related Articles – Summarized
American Thyroid Association
The amount of T4 produced by the thyroid gland is controlled by another hormone, which is made in the pituitary gland located at the base of the brain, called thyroid stimulating hormone.
A high TSH level indicates that the thyroid gland is not making enough thyroid hormone.
The opposite situation, in which the TSH level is low, usually indicates that the thyroid is producing too much thyroid hormone.
Tests measuring free T4 – either a free T4 or free T4 index – more accurately reflect how the thyroid gland is functioning when checked with a TSH. The finding of an elevated TSH and low FT4 or FTI indicates primary hypothyroidism due to disease in the thyroid gland.
It is not a measure of thyroid function and it does not diagnose thyroid cancer when the thyroid gland is still present.
A very high RAIU is seen in individuals whose thyroid gland is overactive, while a low RAIU is seen when the thyroid gland is underactive.
In addition to the radioactive iodine uptake, a thyroid scan may be obtained, which shows a picture of the thyroid gland and reveals what parts of the thyroid have taken up the iodine.
Thyroid Tests
Health care professionals use thyroid tests to check how well your thyroid is working and to find the cause of problems such as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism.
Thyroid tests help health care professionals diagnose thyroid diseases such as.
Tests may include thyroid stimulating hormone, T4, T3, and thyroid antibody tests.
Your health care professional may order thyroid antibody tests if the results of other blood tests suggest thyroid disease.
Health care professionals use a thyroid scan to look at the size, shape, and position of the thyroid gland.
A radioactive iodine uptake test, also called a thyroid uptake test, can help check thyroid function and find the cause of hyperthyroidism.
If your thyroid collects a large amount of radioactive iodine, you may have Graves’ disease, or one or more nodules that make too much thyroid hormone.
How To Interpret Thyroid Function Tests
Changes in thyroid status are typically associated with concordant changes in TH and TSH levels.
TSH has traditionally been recommended as a frontline screening test for thyroid dysfunction, because relatively modest changes in TH levels are associated with marked excursions in TSH. However, screening exclusively with TSH means that some patients will be misdiagnosed, whereas other conditions might be missed altogether.
Several commonly prescribed drugs can cause thyroid dysfunction as an adverse effect and a careful medication history should be taken in all patients with thyroid disease.
In the presence of suspected or confirmed central HPT dysfunction, TSH should not be considered to be a reliable marker of thyroid status and FT4 levels must be used to guide management.
Common pitfalls in this setting include misinterpreting a low or undetectable TSH in a patient taking T4 as signifying over-replacement, or assuming that a normal TSH level equates with euthyroidism.
TSH is low normal or partially suppressed, with low or normal free TH. Therefore, it is generally advisable only to check thyroid function in those patients in whom primary disturbance of one or other part of the HPT axis is suspected.
Physiological alterations during pregnancy lead to changes in TH and TSH levels.
Thyroid Function Tests
If the level drops just a little below normal the pituitary reacts by secreting a hormone called thyroid-stimulating hormone, which activates the thyroid gland to produce more T4. When the thyroid hormone levels rise above normal, the ‘thermostat’ senses this and the pituitary stops secreting TSH so that the thyroid makes less T4. TSH is also called thyrotropin.
The usual blood tests done for thyroid function are TSH, T4 and sometimes T3. In most cases, your TSH level will be the first hormone to be measured, because if this is normal, it is very likely that your thyroid is functioning normally.
If the initial thyroid test results show signs of a thyroid problem and if there is a suspicion of an autoimmune thyroid disease, one or more thyroid antibody tests may be ordered.
The blood test for TSH, which is the most sensitive marker of your thyroid status, is used as a biochemical marker to ensure that your thyroid hormone replacement is adequate.
If you have hyperthyroidism the available treatments are antithyroid drugs to reduce the production of thyroid hormones; surgery to remove all or part of the thyroid gland; or radioactive iodine to reduce the activity of the thyroid.
Thyroid function tests can be influenced by medications and illnesses.
Thyroid problems often run in families and if family members are unwell they should be encouraged to discuss with their own GP whether thyroid testing is warranted.
Thyroid Function Tests
The thyroid function test comprises of a panel of blood tests that can be used by doctors to diagnose thyroid problems.
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone Thyroid Stimulating Hormone “Produced by the pituitary gland its role is to regulate the production of hormones by the thyroid gland” – produced and released into the bloodstream by the.
Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies Antibodies “Protein produced in the blood that fight diseases by attacking and killing harmful bacteria” – antibodies that attack the thyroid peroxidase enzyme Enzyme “a protein that creates a chemical reaction in the body”.
The levels rise as well as the TPO antibody levels in autoimmune Autoimmune “Patients with autoimmune diseases frequently have antibodies circulating in their blood that target their own body tissues” thyroiditis Thyroiditis “a swelling or inflammation of the thyroid gland causing unusually high or low levels of thyroid hormones in the blood stream” , but to a lesser degree.
Usually, the only test that is actually included in the thyroid function test is thyroid-stimulating hormone.
In thyroid function tests the thyroid hormone levels measured in your blood sample are compared against ‘reference ranges’ which are meant to represent the range of readings found in 95% of the whole healthy population.
Thyroid function tests are available from our partner laboratories.
Thyroid Blood Test: Types, Normal Levels, Analyzing Results
Blood tests for thyroid function are an important part of diagnosing and treating thyroid disorders.
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone TSH acts as a messenger to the thyroid gland.
Thyroid peroxidase antibodies are detected in 95% of people with Hashimoto’s disease and around 70% of those with Graves’ disease, two types of autoimmune thyroid diseases.
Thyroid Binding Proteins Testing the blood level of proteins that bind to T3 and T4 can help healthcare providers understand thyroid problems in people whose glands still work normally.
Thyroid binding globulin: Measures levels of a protein that carries thyroid hormones in the blood.
People with euthyroid sick syndrome, for example, have abnormal thyroid hormone levels due to an illness not related to the thyroid.
The test results are based on a common standard for each test, all of which look at thyroid function in different ways.
Thyroid Blood Tests
Thyroid blood tests can help determine if hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism are present.
Test Details What blood tests are done to test the thyroid?
Most of the time, thyroid hormone deficiency is associated with an elevated TSH level, while thyroid hormone excess is associated with a low TSH level.
Normal test range for an adult: 0.40 – 4.50 mIU/mL. T4: thyroxine tests for hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, and used to monitor treatment of thyroid disorders.
Normal range: 2.3 – 4.1 pg/mL. These tests alone aren’t meant to diagnose any illness but may prompt your healthcare provider to do additional testing to evaluate for a possible thyroid disorder.
Thyroid antibodies: These tests help identify different types of autoimmune thyroid conditions.
Common thyroid antibody tests include microsomal antibodies, thyroglobulin antibodies, and thyroid receptor antibodies.

Common activities in bioinformatics include mapping and analyzing DNA and protein sequences, aligning DNA and protein sequences to compare them, and creating and viewing 3-D models of protein structures.
Bioinformatics is very much involved in making sense of protein microarray and HT MS data; the former approach faces similar problems as with microarrays targeted at mRNA, the latter involves the problem of matching large amounts of mass data against predicted masses from protein sequence databases, and the complicated statistical analysis of samples where multiple, but incomplete peptides from each protein are detected.
Protein structure prediction is another important application of bioinformatics.
Another aspect of structural bioinformatics include the use of protein structures for Virtual Screening models such as Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship models and proteochemometric models.
Tens of thousands of three-dimensional protein structures have been determined by X-ray crystallography and protein nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and a central question in structural bioinformatics is whether it is practical to predict possible protein-protein interactions only based on these 3D shapes, without performing protein-protein interaction experiments.
Basic bioinformatics services are classified by the EBI into three categories: SSS, MSA, and BSA. The availability of these service-oriented bioinformatics resources demonstrate the applicability of web-based bioinformatics solutions, and range from a collection of standalone tools with a common data format under a single, standalone or web-based interface, to integrative, distributed and extensible bioinformatics workflow management systems.
Bioinformatics
Bioinformatics is a field of computational science that has to do with the analysis of sequences of biological molecules.
It] usually refers to genes, DNA, RNA, or protein, and is particularly useful in comparing genes and other sequences in proteins and other sequences within an organism or between organisms, looking at evolutionary relationships between organisms, and using the patterns that exist across DNA and protein sequences to figure out what their function is.
You can think about bioinformatics as essentially the linguistics part of genetics.
That is, the linguistics people are looking at patterns in language, and that’s what bioinformatics people do-looking for patterns within sequences of DNA or protein.
What Is Bioinformatics?
Through bioinformatics, biologists can make sense of the massive amounts of data created each day, leading to discoveries that help us better understand our world.
Bioinformatics combines computer programming, big data, and biology to help scientists understand and identify patterns in biological data.
“The goal of bioinformatics is to leverage all of the new technologies that we have-which would include advances in computational capacities, new graphics cards, new algorithms-and applying that to big data generated from biological systems to answer questions previously not answerable,” says Stefan Kaluziak, an assistant professor of bioinformatics at Northeastern University.
Thanks to the exponential amount of data created in recent years, bioinformatics will play a critical role in future scientific discoveries.
To fully understand that data it’s important to have a foundation in biological knowledge, making the field of bioinformatics and its multidisciplinary focus particularly important.
While a skilled data scientist will be able to develop an algorithm and generate results from a set of data, their ability to accurately interpret and apply those data can make all the difference.
Students in the program use real-world data on a regular basis, managing and conducting analysis on large data sets and drawing their own conclusions from the results.

ScienceDirect Topics
The main components of bioinformatics are the development of software tools and algorithms and the analysis and interpretation of biological data by using a variety of software tools and particular algorithms.
We expect bioinformatics procedures such as the computational analysis of gene expression data for the determination of the type and state of a disease or the computational analysis of the resistance of a pathogenic strain to drug therapy to become increasingly widespread in clinical practice over the next few years.
In the support system, bioinformatics is closely associated with computer science, IT, and computational resources because they work as a backbone for bioinformatics.
Although at the time it was not called bioinformatics, the application of computers in protein-sequence analysis and tracing protein evolution was the rudimentary form of contemporary bioinformatics.
Bioinformatics has long been one of the most important methods in life science for mining, analysing, searching, integrating and simulating molecular biological data.
In 1998, Swiss bioinformatics became organized and the five existing bioinformatics groups, representing 30 scientists from five academic institutions, joined forces to create the SIB, a nonprofit foundation.
In its first 15 years of existence, SIB grew from five groups and 30 scientists to a community of 46 groups with more than 600 affiliated bioinformaticians carrying out bioinformatics and computational biology work in fields such as proteomics, transcriptomics, genomics, systems biology, structural bioinformatics, evolutionary bioinformatics, modeling, imaging, biophysics, population genetics, and clinical bioinformatics.
What Is Bioinformatics? A Proposed Definition And Overview Of The Field
Background: The recent flood of data from genome sequences and functional genomics has given rise to new field, bioinformatics, which combines elements of biology and computer science.
Objectives: Here we propose a definition for this new field and review some of the research that is being pursued, particularly in relation to transcriptional regulatory systems.
Methods: Our definition is as follows: Bioinformatics is conceptualizing biology in terms of macromolecules and then applying “Informatics” techniques to understand and organize the information associated with these molecules, on a large-scale.
Results and conclusions: Analyses in bioinformatics predominantly focus on three types of large datasets available in molecular biology: macromolecular structures, genome sequences, and the results of functional genomics experiments.
Additional information includes the text of scientific papers and “Relationship data” from metabolic pathways, taxonomy trees, and protein-protein interaction networks.
Bioinformatics employs a wide range of computational techniques including sequence and structural alignment, database design and data mining, macromolecular geometry, phylogenetic tree construction, prediction of protein structure and function, gene finding, and expression data clustering.
The emphasis is on approaches integrating a variety of computational methods and heterogeneous data sources.
An Overview Of Bioinformatics And Its Applications

Gold Mining Process
People in hard hats working underground is what often comes to mind when thinking about how gold is mined.
Mining the ore is just one stage in a long and complex gold mining process.
Long before any gold can be extracted, significant exploration and development needs to take place, both to determine, as accurately as possible, the size of the deposit as well as how to extract and process the ore efficiently, safely and responsibly.
On average, it takes between 10-20 years before a gold mine is even ready to produce material that can be refined.
How To Find Gold In The United States
Most of the gold mining districts in the West were located by pioneers, many of whom were experienced gold miners from the southern Appalachian region, but even in colonial times only a small proportion of the gold seekers were successful.
The lack of outstanding success in spite of the great increase in prospecting during the depression in the 1930’s confirms the opinion of those most familiar with the occurrence of gold and the development of gold mining districts is that the best chances of success lie in systematic studies of known productive areas rather than in efforts to discover gold in hitherto unproductive areas.
The development of new, highly sensitive, and relatively inexpensive methods of detecting gold has greatly increased the possibility of discovering gold deposits which are too low grade to have been recognized earlier by the prospector using only a gold pan.
Most land in the United States is off-limits for gold prospecting.
There are also a large number of layman’s books about gold that describe gold deposits and gold prospecting.
In many of these places a large reserve of low-grade placer gold may exist, but the lack of a permanent water supply for conventional placer mining operations requires the use of expensive dry or semidry concentrating methods to recover the gold.
Gold Books and Panning Supplies Looking for gold? We have over 50 different gold books and gold maps that show where gold has been found in the past and provide instruction on gold prospecting methods.
Gold Prospecting Near Las Vegas, Nevada
Gold mining areas around Las Vegas are located in Clark County, and in nearby Mohave County.
Placer gold in Clark County can be found southeast of Las Vegas on U.S. Highway 95 near the historic mining town of Nelson.
The source of the gold at El Dorado Canyon is estimated to come from the lode mines near Nelson.
The most popular areas are the Gold Basin and Lost Basin placers, although there are many scattered gold deposits that can be found all throughout the county within a few hours of Las Vegas.
Placer gold locations in Gold Basin are found in gold-bearing gravels arroyos and gulches on the large detrital fan that sloped eastward from the White Hills to Hualapai Wash and traversed by White Elephant Wash and its tributaries.
Placer gold locations in the area were found on the eastern and western sides of the Lost Basin Range, south of Lake Mead. Also Read: Gold Mining in Arizona.
Placers have been mined in the vicinity of some gold mines near Oatman and in the valley of Silver Creek, which drains northwest from the Oatman Camp.

Eftilagimod Alpha
Currently, the main indications for the drug are metastatic breast cancer, non-small cell lung cancer, and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
Eftilagimod alpha is a soluble LAG-3 fusion protein that activates antigen-presenting cells.
An April 2002 paper in the Journal of Immunology showed the mechanism of action of efti in inducing maturation and activation of human monocyte-derived dendritic cells, whereby efti binds to MHC class II molecules expressed in plasma membrane lipid rafts on immature dendritic cells and induces morphological changes such as the formation of dendritic projections, an up-regulation of co-stimulatory molecules, and the production of IL-12 and TNF-α.
A February 2003 paper in Vaccine showed that, in human immature monocyte-derived dendritic cells, efti could induce the production of chemokines that would direct the migration of maturing dendritic cells to lymph nodes.
Notably, LAG-3-matured dendritic cells were upregulated for CCR7. Later, the same authors showed that soluble LAG-3 could reduce the differentiation of macrophages and dendritic cells from monocytes, suggesting that the positive effect of LAG-3 as a dendritic cell-activator applied to pre-existing dendritic cells.
A March 2008 paper in the Journal of Immunology, again in collaboration with the Instituto Nazionale dei Tumori, showed in vitro that efti could induce the maturation of monocyte-derived dendritic cells to produce chemokines and TNF-α, and that, when given with CD40/CD40L, it could induce full functional activation of dendritic cells so that they could produce heightened levels of IL-12.
Cell Genesys’ lead product, GVAX, consisted of whole tumor cells genetically modified to secrete GM-CSF. When mice that had been inoculated with the B16 mouse melanoma cell line received both GVAX and 0.1 µg of soluble LAG-3, the result was a 7-day median survival advantage over the mice which received only GVAX at day 3.
Eftilagimod Alpha, A Soluble Lymphocyte Activation Gene-3 Protein Plus Pembrolizumab In Patients With Metastatic Melanoma
Background: To evaluate the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of eftilagimod alpha, a soluble lymphocyte activation gene-3 protein, in combination with the programmed cell death-1 antagonist pembrolizumab.
Methods: The study was divided into two parts; parts A and B, where part A was the dose escalation part and part B was an extension part of the study.
Patients with metastatic melanoma were treated with efti plus the standard dose of pembrolizumab.
Results: Twenty-four patients with melanoma received pembrolizumab and bi-weekly subcutaneous injections of efti at doses 1 mg, 6 mg or 30 mg/injection for up to 6 months or 30 mg/injection for up 12 months.
Sustained systemic exposure to the product was obtained in all patients following s.c. injections of 30 mg dose.
Treatment induced an increase in activated CD8 and CD4 T cell counts, and in some of the soluble biomarkers, particularly interferon-γ, a Th1 signature cytokine.
An overall response rate of 33% was observed in patients partly with pembrolizumab-refractory of part A and ORR of 50% was observed in patients with PD-1 naïve of part B. Conclusions: Efti was well tolerated in combination with pembrolizumab with encouraging antitumor activity.

In part A, screening was done in parallel to cycle 4 of actively ongoing pembrolizumab therapy and treatment with efti was started with cycle 5 of pembrolizumab.
In part B, patients received pembrolizumab in conjunction with efti s.c. at the recommended dose of 30 mg every 2 weeks for a maximum of 12 months, starting with cycle 1 of Open access Study assessments The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the safety, tolerability and recommended phase two doseof efti when combined with anti- PD-1 treatment starting with cycle 5 or cycle 1 of pembrolizumab.
Blood samples were collected for analysis of plasma concentrations of efti and cytokines/chemokines and for detection of serum anti- efti antibodies.
Briefly, anti- efti antibodies were captured and detected in a sandwich formed by biotinylated and ruthenylated efti.

The FDA has granted a fast track designation to the soluble LAG-3 protein eftilagimod alpha for use in the frontline treatment of patients with recurrent or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
The FDA has granted a fast track designation to the soluble LAG-3 protein eftilagimod alpha for use in the frontline treatment of patients with recurrent or metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, according to an announcement from Immutep Limited, the drug developer.
The decision is based on data from part C of the phase 2 TACTI-002 trial, which is examining eftilagimod alpha plus pembrolizumab in the second-line treatment of 28 evaluable patients with HNSCC who are PD-X naïve.
Patients with non-small cell lung cancer who were PD-X naïve and were receiving the combination as frontline treatment were enrolled to Part A. Patients had stage IIIB or IV disease that was not amenable to EGFR- or ALK-based treatment; they had advanced/metastatic disease and were treatment naïve.
This subgroup of patients had recurrent disease that was not amenable to curative therapy, or metastatic disease that was deemed to be incurable by local therapy following progression on a previous platinum-based treatment.
Additional results indicated that the disease control rate achieved with the doublet in this population was 46.4%. In March 2021, the pharmaceutical company announced that they had entered into another collaboration with Merck & Co. Inc., to examine eftilagimod alpha plus pembrolizumab in the phase 2b TACTI-003 trial as frontline treatment in patients with HNSCC. What Is Market Liquidity? Definition, Calculation, And Examples
Market liquidity is the extent to which an asset can be bought or sold at the current market price, without impacting its value.
When people talk about liquidity, they’re usually either referring to market liquidity or accounting liquidity.
Market liquidity – this is the measure of how efficiently a market enables participants to buy and sell assets at stable prices.
Financial markets need enough market liquidity to ensure that traders can efficiently exchange assets and investment instruments.
High levels of liquidity will make it easier to open and close positions quickly and lead to a tighter bid-ask spread. These favourable conditions then only increase the number of active market participants, which in turn adds to liquidity.
Forex – the forex market is thought of as the most liquid market in the world.
Oil is the most highly traded commodity, which typically means it’s a liquid market – although issues such as storage shortages have been known to lead to liquidity risk when no one is willing to buy the commodity.
Why Is Liquidity Important?
Market liquidity is important for a number of reasons, but primarily because it impacts how quickly you can open and close positions.
High liquidity means that there are a large number of orders to buy and sell in the underlying market.
If a market is illiquid, it could mean that there is a much wider spread. How to use liquidity in trading.
When you’re trading financial markets, liquidity needs to be considered before every position is opened or closed.
The most important thing to remember is that market liquidity is not necessarily fixed, it works on a dynamic scale of high liquidity to low liquidity.
A market’s position on the spectrum depends on a variety of factors such as the volume of traders and time of day.
If you are trading an overseas market, or a market out of hours, you might find that there are fewer market participants and so the liquidity is much lower.
Liquidity Definition
Liquidity refers to the efficiency or ease with which an asset or security can be converted into ready cash without affecting its market price.
There are two main measures of liquidity: market liquidity and accounting liquidity.
Market Liquidity Market liquidity refers to the extent to which a market, such as a country’s stock market or a city’s real estate market, allows assets to be bought and sold at stable, transparent prices.
The stock market, on the other hand, is characterized by higher market liquidity.
The liquidity of markets for other assets, such as derivatives, contracts, currencies, or commodities, often depends on their size, and how many open exchanges exist for them to be traded on.
Accounting Liquidity Accounting liquidity measures the ease with which an individual or company can meet their financial obligations with the liquid assets available to them-the ability to pay off debts as they come due.
There are a number of ratios that measure accounting liquidity, which differ in how strictly they define “Liquid assets.” Analysts and investors use these to identify companies with strong liquidity.
Market Liquidity
In business, economics or investment, market liquidity is a market’s feature whereby an individual or firm can quickly purchase or sell an asset without causing a drastic change in the asset’s price.
Speculators and market makers are key contributors to the liquidity of a market or asset.
Structural liquidity risk, sometimes called funding liquidity risk, is the risk associated with funding asset portfolios in the normal course of business.
Contingent liquidity risk is the risk associated with finding additional funds or replacing maturing liabilities under potential, future stressed market conditions.
The market liquidity of assets affects their prices and expected returns.
This risk involves the exposure of the asset return to shocks in overall market liquidity, the exposure of the asset’s own liquidity to shocks in market liquidity and the effect of market return on the asset’s own liquidity.
Managing liquidity is a daily process requiring bankers to monitor and project cash flows to ensure adequate liquidity is maintained.
Definition Market Vs Accounting Liquidity
All else being equal, more liquid assets trade at a Liquidity Premium.
Liquidity refers to how easily an investment can be sold for cash.
Cash is always listed at the top of the asset section, while other types of assets, such as PP&EPP&E is one of the core non-current assets found on the balance sheet.
The Quick Ratio, also known as the Acid-test, measures the ability of a business to pay its short-term liabilities with assets readily convertible into cash.
The cash ratio, sometimes referred to as the cash asset ratio, is a liquidity metric that indicates a company’s capacity to pay off short-term debt obligations with its cash and cash equivalents.
As you can see in the image, Amazon’s assets are separated into two categories, current assets and non-current assets.
Current assets are all assets that a company expects to convert to cash within one year.
How Does It Affect Your Trading?
Finally, we will see how market liquidity and volatility are related and what it means in the context of trading.
Market liquidity depends on how much interest the public has in the particular asset in question.
Trading after hours almost always means fewer buyers and sellers on the market.
Markets with sufficient trading volume are known to have stable prices and a good environment for institutional traders.
Being familiar with them allows traders to maximize their understanding of market liquidity and better navigate the periods with low and high trading volume.

UKHospitality is the powerful voice representing the broad hospitality sector – covering everything from bars, coffee shops, contract catering, hotels, nightclubs, visitor attractions and other leisure venues.
It was formed from the merger of the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers and the British Hospitality Association in April 2018.
Its main aims are to represent the sector, promote the sector, share best practice and create an unrivalled networking platform.
The sector is a major contributor to the UK economy, employing 2.9 million people and generating £130bn in economic activity, while paying £38bn in taxation to fund important local and national services.
Hospitality is the 3rd largest private sector employer in the UK; double the size of financial services and bigger than automotive, pharmaceuticals and aerospace combined.
UKHospitality Seeks To Pave The Way Towards Recovery
By Denis Sheehan, Publisher, H&C News: UKHospitality seeks to pave the way towards recovery.
UKHospitality believes making pavement licences permanent will help the Covid-ravaged hospitality sector make a faster post-pandemic recovery.
Responding to a recent Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities call for views on pavement licences, UKHospitality said the temporary scheme – introduced last April and due to end this September – should become permanent, and would be ‘low-cost, low-admin’.
“UKHospitality Chief Executive Kate Nicholls said:”Pavement licences have been a really positive success story, and in many cases have enabled businesses to remain open, when otherwise they would have had to close or restrict their opening hours, threatening thousands of jobs.
“As well as businesses, outdoor spaces have also brought benefits to those town and city centres previously without al fresco drinking and dining opportunities, enabling them to begin the process of levelling up, and start to enjoy the sort of outdoor experiences available elsewhere. Not only that, but by helping local economies recover – and recover faster – this will undoubtedly contribute to the long-term levelling up of the regions. The fact that the scheme has been embraced enthusiastically by a number of local authorities is hugely encouraging in itself.”
UKHospitality’s consultation response also recognises that making the scheme permanent may require changes in terms of cost and how it is administered, but calls for it to remain easy to use and cheap enough for businesses to continue using it.
It has agreed with a proposed £350 cap on application fees, and suggests that any new fee system should encourage and allow local authorities to offer subsidised – or even free – pavement licences, which some councils have already done with great success for businesses and local areas.

UKHospitality was formed in Apr.2018 from the merger of the British Hospitality Association and the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers.
Plans to merge the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers and the British Hospitality Association have been confirmed.
The aim of the new super trade body is to create a powerful unified voice for the country’s £130bn hospitality sector as it faces unprecedented political and regulatory pressures.
Overwhelming support from ALMR and BHA members triggered the creation of UKHospitality, a strong, united voice for the hospitality sector of 700+ member companies, operating 65,000 venues, and employing 2.9m people.
The association will campaign for policies to help the sector achieve further growth.
Keeping VAT At 12.5% Is Vital, UKHospitality Chief Executive Kate Nicholls Tells Government
Speaking at a Department for Culture, Media and Sport inquiry yesterday’s, UKHospitality chief executive Kate Nicholls stressed that retaining the 12.5% VAT for hospitality and tourism, rather than returning to the pre-pandemic rate of 20% in April as is currently planned, is vital if the UK is to remain competitive versus international rivals, attract visitors from abroad and encourage Britons to go out and spend.
“There is no other industry that will generate jobs, growth and investment at pace across the UK and deliver levelling up in practice,” she said.
Nicholls was addressing a DCMS select committee inquiry called Promoting Britain Abroad, looking at how the tourism industry can be supported in its post-Covid recovery, how it can promote British ‘soft power’, and how effective the Government has been in its pandemic support for the sector.
Contributing to an answer about how uncompetitive Britain is when it comes to price, Nicholls suggested that retaining VAT at 12.5% is an effective way of improving the UK’s competitiveness.
She said lowering VAT for hospitality and tourism during the pandemic had prompted ‘an immediate uptick in demand’, warned that raising it ‘will significantly hurt the sector’, and said that ‘the more it costs people to go out the less they will do it, the less they have to spend, and the slower the economic recovery’.
Her select committee contribution comes as UKHospitality intensifies its #VATsEnough campaign ahead of the Chancellor’s Spring Statement on 23 March.
VATs Enough, which has the backing of leading hospitality operators, urges the Government to maintain VAT at 12.5%, and warns that a return to 20% could be the final financial straw for many hospitality businesses already struggling to get back on their feet after two-years of devastating losses.
British Hospitality Association
The British Hospitality Association, incorporating The Restaurant Association, was a non-government representative body for hotels, clubs, restaurants, leisure outlets and other hospitality-related organisations nationwide headquartered in London, UK. In 2019 it merged with the Association of Licensed Multiple Retailers to form UKHospitality.
In 1926, association decided to change its name again and became the Hotel & Restaurant Association of Great Britain.
In 1948 it combined with the Residential Hotel Association to form the British Hotels and Restaurants Association.
In the early 1970s, HRA merged with the Caterer’s Association and was renamed as British Hotels, Restaurants and Caterers’ Association.
In a few years, BHRCA claimed to represent over half of the hotels with 5+ bedrooms across the UK. In the late 1980s, the association changed its name to its present form, the British Hospitality Association, to make it shorter, be modern and reflect the wider industry it represents.
The British Hospitality Association publishes a number of periodicals.

How Owens Corning Keeps Workers Safe During Severe Weather
While many Middle Tennesseeans have a severe weather game plan for their homes, not everyone knows what to do when there’s a warning at their workplace.
The Owens Corning plant in Springfield, Tennessee is no stranger to severe weather after it was hit by an F-3 tornado in the May 4-5 tornado outbreak of 2003.
From NOAA weather radios to phone alerts, they have multiple ways to get information on warnings in the area.
If there’s active weather on the way, there’s a detailed plan in place.
“We notify all of our employees, visitors, and guests via an air horn. We will go to that break room, monitor the weather if there is a tornado warning, or if we just think that the weather’s bad enough, then we will move everybody into the facility restrooms,” said Crosby.
Crosby added the restrooms are labeled as the designated tornado shelter, and they make sure it’s easy to get ahold of the severe weather safety plans.
“We actually keep those plans at every exit. So we have 14 exits, and we keep those plans so that if we need them, everybody knows where they can run and grab those plans.”

Fiberglass
Carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer is a similar composite material in which the reinforcement fiber is carbon fibers.
Unlike glass fibers used for insulation, for the final structure to be strong, the fiber’s surfaces must be almost entirely free of defects, as this permits the fibers to reach gigapascal tensile strengths.
Composition: the most common types of glass fiber used in fiberglass is E-glass, which is alumino-borosilicate glass with less than 1% w/w alkali oxides, mainly used for glass-reinforced plastics.
Much more reliable tanks are made using woven mat or filament wound fiber, with the fiber orientation at right angles to the hoop stress imposed in the sidewall by the contents.
The controlled variables for winding are fiber type, resin content, wind angle, tow or bandwidth and thickness of the fiber bundle.
The fiberglass spray lay-up process is similar to the hand lay-up process but differs in the application of the fiber and resin to the mold.
In fiberglass pultrusion, fibers are pulled from spools through a device that coats them with a resin.

The Best Dishwashers For 2022

Most dishwashers measure 24 inches wide, but like a family SUV, large dishwashers now come with an optional third row.
We should really call it the best overall dishwasher because it’s energy-efficient, it’s less than $700 and it rates extremely well.
This dishwasher is rated to fit 16 total place settings at one time, compared to 13 or 14 that most other dishwashers fit.

The 3 Best Dishwashers Of 2022
Efficiency: This factor barely made a difference in how we picked our favorite dishwashers because every dishwasher is super efficient compared with hand washing, and the most efficient dishwashers save only a few dollars’ worth of water and energy per year compared with the least efficient models.
A Bosch dishwasher isn’t the best choice for everyone, but it’s still the best starting point in anybody’s search for the right dishwasher.
Bosch dishwashers all have a standard selection of cycle options, though the quick-wash cycle is by far the best we’ve tested in any dishwasher that costs less than $1,000.
J.D. Power rates the brand among the best for initial satisfaction with dishwashers.
JennAir is Whirlpool Corporation’s highest-end brand, and its dishwashers are functionally identical to KitchenAid models-probably not the best value for the money, from a performance and reliability perspective.
AGA, Bertazzoni, Forza, Smeg, Verona, and Viking are all noteworthy stove makers that, as best we can tell, have slapped their brand labels onto dishwashers made by some other company so that they can offer a matching dishwasher when you spend $2,000 or more on one of their ranges.
The best dishwashers did a great job with the cheap powder alone, while others struggled until we tried one of the better formulas.
Dishwasher
Dishwashers may come in standard or tall tub designs; standard tub dishwashers have a service kickplate beneath the dishwasher door that allows for simpler maintenance and installation, but tall tub dishwashers have approximately 20% more capacity and better sound dampening from having a continuous front door.
A drawer dishwasher, first introduced by Fisher & Paykel in 1997, is a variant of the dishwasher in which the baskets slide out with the door in the same manner as a drawer filing cabinet, with each drawer in a double-drawer model being able to operate independently of the other.
Dishwashers are designed to work using specially formulated dishwasher detergent.
These have been banned in the European Union by EU Directive 76/769/EEC. In some regions depending on water hardness a dishwasher might function better with the use of a dishwasher salt.
According to a peer-reviewed study in 2003, hand washing and drying of an amount of dishes equivalent to a fully loaded automatic dishwasher could use between 20 and 300 litres of water and between 0.1 and 8 kWh of energy, while the numbers for energy-efficient automatic dishwashers were 15-22 litres and 1 to 2 kWh, respectively.
The study does not address costs associated with the manufacture and disposal of dishwashers, the cost of possible accelerated wear of dishes from the chemical harshness of dishwasher detergent, the comparison for cleaning cookware, or the value of labour saved; hand washers needed between 65 and 106 minutes.
The use of a dishwasher to clean greasy tools and parts is not recommended as the grease can clog the dishwasher.

United States Department Of Justice
The United States Department of Justice, also known as the Justice Department, is a federal executive department of the United States government tasked with the enforcement of federal law and administration of justice in the United States.
The department is headed by the U.S. Attorney General, who reports directly to the president of the United States and is a member of the president’s Cabinet.
Following unsuccessful efforts in 1830 and 1846 to make Attorney General a full-time job, in 1867, the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary, led by Congressman William Lawrence, conducted an inquiry into the creation of a “Law department” headed by the Attorney General and also composed of the various department solicitors and United States attorneys.
Grant appointed Amos T. Akerman as Attorney General and Benjamin H. Bristow as America’s first solicitor general the same week that Congress created the Department of Justice.
The “Act to Establish the Department of Justice” drastically increased the Attorney General’s responsibilities to include the supervision of all United States attorneys, formerly under the Department of the Interior, the prosecution of all federal crimes, and the representation of the United States in all court actions, barring the use of private attorneys by the federal government.
In 1933, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an executive order which gave the Department of Justice responsibility for the “Functions of prosecuting in the courts of the United States claims and demands by, and offsenses [sic] against, the Government of the United States, and of defending claims and demands against the Government, and of supervising the work of United States attorneys, marshals, and clerks in connection therewith, now exercised by any agency or officer…”.
The motto’s conception of the prosecutor as being the servant of justice itself finds concrete expression in a similarly-ordered English-language inscription in the above-door paneling in the ceremonial rotunda anteroom just outside the Attorney General’s office in the Department of Justice Main Building in Washington, D.C. The building was renamed in honor of former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy in 2001.
