Electrical Power System

The electrical power system is a key component of facility design, and a well-designed electrical power system is critical for the safe and effective performance of medical devices.

1.3 Electrical Power System/GridAn electric power system is defined as a network of electrical components used to supply, transmit, and consume electric power.

An electric power system that supplies power to homes and industries for a sizeable region is called an electric grid.

a.To generate electrical power in accordance with the type of airborne electrical equipment and their electricity consumption, including DC electrical power and AC electrical power.

Not only it includes the renovation of power system operation rules with novel technologies such as the new electricity market rules and big data analytics, but it also involves the unprecedented deep coupling with other systems such as communication system and traffic system.

Chapter 2 introduces the fundamental power system mathematical models for the theoretical analysis of the advanced modern power system technologies.

This chapter describes the behaviour of power systems during faults, how faults may be detected, key elements of protection systems, the performance requirements for protection systems and the components, methods and schemes that are most commonly used to provide protection for power system equipment, along with a brief overview of present and emerging research challenges and solutions in the field, in the context of power systems comprising increasing penetrations of distributed generation.

The Structure Of Electric Power Systems

From a general perspective, an electric power system is usually understood as a very large network that links power plants to loads, by means of an electric grid that may span a whole continent, such as Europe or North America.

Power systems that are supplied by an external electricity source or that produce electricity and convey it to a larger grid are called partial power systems.

The power systems that are of interest for our purposes are the large scale, full power systems that span large distances and have been deployed over decades by power companies.

The Electric Power Research Institute has defined distributed generation as the “Utilization of small, modular power generation technologies dispersed throughout a utility’s distribution system in order to reduce T&D loading or load growth and thereby defer the upgrade of T&D facilities, reduce system losses, improve power quality, and reliability.”

Power from generation plants is carried first through transmission systems, which consist of transmission lines that carry electric power at various voltage levels.

Preferred AC rms voltage levels are internationally standardized in IEC 60038:2009 as:.362 kV or 420 kV; 420 kV or 550 kV; 800 kV; 1,100 kV or 1,200 kV highest voltages for three-phase systems having a highest voltage for equipment exceeding 245 kV. 66 kV; 110 kV or 132 kV; 220 kV nominal voltages for three- phase systems having a nominal voltage above 35 kV and not exceeding 230 kV. 11 kV; 22 kV; 33 kV or 35 kV nominal voltages for three-phase systems having a nominal voltage above 1 kV and not exceeding 35 kV. There is a separate set of values specific for North American practice.

In the case of systems having a nominal voltage between 100V and 1,000V inclusive, 230/400V is standard for three-phase, four-wire systems and also 120/208V for 60 Hz. For three-wire systems, 230V between phases is standard for 50 Hz and 240V for 60 Hz. For single-phase three-wire systems at 60 Hz, 120/240V is standard.

Electric Power System

An electric power system is a network of electrical components deployed to supply, transfer, and use electric power.

The electrical grid can be broadly divided into the generators that supply the power, the transmission system that carries the power from the generating centers to the load centers, and the distribution system that feeds the power to nearby homes and industries.

For some power systems, the source of power is external to the system but for others, it is part of the system itself-it is these internal power sources that are discussed in the remainder of this section.

At any one time, the net amount of power consumed by the loads on a power system must equal the net amount of power produced by the supplies less the power lost in transmission.

High-powered power electronics can also be used to convert AC power to DC power for long distance transmission in a system known as HVDC. HVDC is used because it proves to be more economical than similar high voltage AC systems for very long distances.

Some electric railway systems also use DC power and thus make use of power electronics to feed grid power to the locomotives and often for speed control of the locomotive’s motor.

Power system management varies depending upon the power system.

Confocal Microscopy: Principles And Modern Practices

In a confocal microscope, the illumination and detection optics are focused on the same diffraction-limited spot in the sample, which is the only spot imaged by the detector during a confocal scan.

While the entire field of view is illuminated during confocal imaging, anything outside the focal plane contributes little to the image, lessening the haze observed in standard light microscopy with thick and highly-scattering samples, and providing optical sectioning.

Most modern confocal microscopes scan the illumination beam across the stationary sample and are controlled with an acousto-optic tunable filter to rapidly turn lasers on and off, attenuate the laser power, and select the wavelength during imaging.

The confocal principle of two pinholes focusing a point of light on the sample is maintained, but the entire field can be covered at a high rate and the image is captured with a camera instead of a PMT. The advantages of spinning disk confocal microscopes are the imaging speed, relatively low-light dose, and the fact that the sample does not have to be moved through the illumination.

Confocal microscopy provides the ability to collect clear images from a thin section of a thick sample with low background and minimal out-of-focus interference.

A number of fluorescence-based techniques are often combined with confocal microscopy including Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer, Fluorescence Recovery after Photobleaching, Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging, spectral imaging, optogenetics, and multiphoton imaging, all of which are introduced here: Paddock & Eliceiri, 2013, Murphy & Davidson, 2012.The type of confocal microscope best suited to a given application depends largely on the prioritization of imaging speed, resolution, and field-of-view – while keeping in mind photodamage to the sample.

Confocal Microscopy

Confocal microscopy, most frequently confocal laser scanning microscopy or laser confocal scanning microscopy, is an optical imaging technique for increasing optical resolution and contrast of a micrograph by means of using a spatial pinhole to block out-of-focus light in image formation.

Confocal microscopy provides the capacity for direct, noninvasive, serial optical sectioning of intact, thick, living specimens with a minimum of sample preparation as well as a marginal improvement in lateral resolution compared to wide-field microscopy.

Cutting-edge development of confocal laser scanning microscopy now allows better than standard video rate imaging by using multiple microelectromechanical scanning mirrors.

With confocal microscopy it is even possible to improve on the resolution limit of wide-field illumination techniques because the confocal aperture can be closed down to eliminate higher orders of the diffraction pattern.

In fluorescence observations, the resolution limit of confocal microscopy is often limited by the signal to noise ratio caused by the small number of photons typically available in fluorescence microscopy.

The IRENE system makes use of confocal microscopy for optical scanning and recovery of damaged historical audio.

To image samples at low temperatures, two main approaches have been used, both based on the laser scanning confocal microscopy architecture.

Confocal Microscopy

There has been a tremendous explosion in the popularity of confocal microscopy in recent years, due in part to the relative ease with which extremely high-quality images can be obtained from specimens prepared for conventional fluorescence microscopy, and the growing number of applications in cell biology that rely on imaging both fixed and living cells and tissues.

Confocal microscopy provides only a marginal improvement in both axial and lateral optical resolution, but is able to exclude secondary fluorescence in areas removed from the focal plane from resulting images.

Presented in Figure 1 are a series of images that compare selected viewfields in traditional widefield and laser scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy.

During the late 1970s and the 1980s, advances in computer and laser technology, coupled to new algorithms for digital manipulation of images, led to a growing interest in confocal microscopy.

Refocusing the objective in a confocal microscope shifts the excitation and emission points on a specimen to a new plane that becomes confocal with the pinhole apertures of the light source and detector.

Advances in confocal microscopy have made possible multi-dimensional views of living cells and tissues that include image information in the x, y, and z dimensions as a function of time and presented in multiple colors.

The recent introduction of personal confocal systems has competitively driven down the price of low-end confocal microscopes and increased the number of individual users.

ScienceDirect Topics

Although most confocal systems come with easy-to-use software, users require training and an understanding of the confocal principle to obtain the best confocal images.

C. Confocal MicroscopesThe confocal microscope substantially reduces both the scattered and the out-of-focus light that contributes to the image.

The scan zoom can purposefully be left at a low level to undersample the image and make gains in image signal strength and FOV. An analogous operation could be achieved in SDCM with an adjustable focal length field lens situated between the pinhole disk and the microscope.

Spectrally resolved image stacks are useful for classifying image features based on color, inferring changes in the local chemical environment surrounding the fluorescent probe, or computationally removing autofluorescent signals via linear unmixing.

Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy maps the spatial distribution of the excited state lifetimes of extrinsic fluorescent labels or endogenously autofluorescent materials in cells and generates a new mode of image contrast based on the local chemical environment of the fluorescent molecule.

Confocal MicroscopyConfocal microscopes produce clear images of structures within relatively thick specimens by selectively collecting light from thin regions of the specimen.

The longer time necessary to capture an image also makes it less desirable for live cell imaging of extremely fast events.

How Does A Confocal Microscope Work?

How does a confocal microscope work? This web page explains how a confocal microscope works; I’ve tried to make this explanation not too technical, although for certain parts I’ve included some details for people who know more optics.

The color of light emitted is material dependent, and likewise the excitation light wavelength depends on the material.

In the picture above, we are supposing the excitation light needs to be violet, and the emitted light is red.

The red rays of light represent light from another point in the sample, which is not at the focal point of the lens, but which nonetheless get imaged by the lenses of the microscope.

Dye in the sample fluoresces, and the emitted light gets descanned by the same mirrors that are used to scan the excitation light from the laser.

By having a confocal pinhole, the microscope is really efficient at rejecting out of focus fluorescent light.

A similar effect happens with points of light in the focal plane, but not at the focal point – emitted light from these areas is blocked by the pinhole screen.

Yen Slides To Five-Year Lows At Start Of Busy Week For Central Banks

HONG KONG – The yen slid to a new five-year low on Monday, ahead of a bumper week of central bank meetings around the world which will almost certainly reaffirm the Bank of Japan’s position as one of the last dovish central banks standing.

The dollar climbed to as much as 117.61 yen on Monday morning, its highest since January 2017, extending gains from the previous week which Barclays analysts attributed to a decline in demand for safe havens as equities rallied.

“The BOJ’s dovish bias, in contrast to the expected Fed liftoff, should continue to support dollar-yen alongside negative terms of trade impact from high energy costs,” Barclays said, adding there is “No clear resistance until the end-2016 high of 118.6”.

The U.S. central bank’s rate setting Federal Open Market Committee meets this week, and is all but certain to begin hiking interest rates from their pandemic lows, with investors also watching projections for the frequency and size of future rate increases.

This is putting bonds under pressure and the yield on benchmark 10-year Treasuries rose as much as six basis points early Monday to a new month high of 2.06%. In contrast, the BOJ is set to remain dovish at its meeting this week as policymakers try to boost the country’s weak economic recovery from the pandemic.

Also meeting this week is the Bank of England with markets expecting a further 25-basis-point rate hike.

Commodity-linked currencies lost a little ground having surged this month as oil, grain and metals prices rose to multi year highs.

FX Breakout: U.S. Dollar Caps Week With Surge To Another 5-Year High Versus Japanese Yen

The U.S. dollar soared versus the Japanese yen Friday, taking it to another five-year high as the Federal Reserve and Bank of Japan prepare for monetary policy meetings next week.

The dollar jumped 1% versus the Japanese currency USDJPY, +0.35% to fetch 117.30 yen, trading at a level last seen on Jan. 4, 2017, according to Tullet Prebon data.

It would be the dollar’s strongest daily jump versus the yen since November.

The currency pair had made two trips above 116 yen earlier this year, but met selling around the 116.30 yen level to turn back sharply lower, they noted.

Erson and Gallo have argued the pair should be trading above 120 yen given movements in U.S. bond yields, while oil CL.1, -2.95% BRN00, -2.89% trading above $100 a barrel is a “Hugely negative” factor for the yen, given the country’s reliance on energy imports.

The Fed is widely expected to kick off an interest rate-hike cycle when it meets in the week ahead, with traders looking for a quarter percentage point rise in the fed-funds rate.

Traders will be eager to see if the Fed follows in the footsteps of the European Central Bank, which on Thursday emphasized the inflation risks around Russia’s invasion of Ukraine over the hit to economic growth, he said.

Japanese Yen Tanks As US Dollar Soars Ahead Of The Fed And BoJ. Where To For USD/JPY?

Japanese Yen

No true exchange rate existed for the yen between December 7, 1941, and April 25, 1949; wartime inflation reduced the yen to a fraction of its prewar value.

In the 1970s, Japanese government and businesspeople were very concerned that a rise in the value of the yen would hurt export growth by making Japanese products less competitive and would damage the industrial base.

This capital flow increased the supply of yen in foreign-exchange markets, as Japanese investors changed their yen for other currencies to invest overseas.

Throughout its history, the denominations have ranged from 10 yen to 10,000 yen; since 1984, the lowest-valued banknote is the 1,000 yen note.

The supply of the yen in the market is governed by the desire of yen holders to exchange their yen for other currencies to purchase goods, services, or assets.

During the war, because of overprinting and inflation as the Empire occupied more territory, the yen went as low as 600 yen to the USD. When McArthur and the US forces entered Japan in 1945, they decreed an official conversion rate of 15 yen to the USD. Within 1945-1946: the rate tanked to 50 yen to the USD because of the ongoing inflation.

Eventually, the peg was officially moved to 270 yen to the dollar in 1948 before being adjusted again from 1949 to 1971 to 360 yen to the dollar.

Bank Of Japan

A period of unanticipated consequences was ended when the Bank of Japan was founded in Meiji 15, under the Bank of Japan Act 1882, after a Belgian model.

Following the passage of the Convertible Bank Note Regulations, the Bank of Japan issued its first banknotes in 1885.

The Bank of Japan was reorganized in 1942, under the Bank of Japan Act of 1942, promulgated on 24 February 1942.

During the entire post-war era, until at least 1991, the Bank of Japan’s monetary policy has primarily been conducted via its ‘window guidance’ credit controls, whereby the central bank would impose bank credit growth quotas on the commercial banks.

A major 1997 revision of the Bank of Japan Act [jp] was designed to give it greater independence; however, the Bank of Japan has been criticized for already possessing excessive independence and lacking in accountability before this law was promulgated.

Under the leadership of new Governor Haruhiko Kuroda, the Bank of Japan released a statement on 5 April 2013 announcing that it would be purchasing securities and bonds at a rate of 60-70 trillion yen a year in an attempt to double Japan’s money base in two years.

Bank Of Japan Definition

The Bank of Japan issued its first currency notes in 1885 and, with the exception of a brief period following the Second World War, it has operated continuously ever since.

The bank is headed by the governor, who was Haruhiko Kuroda as of November 2020.

The Bank of Japan decides and implements monetary policy to maintain price stability.

The Bank manipulates interest rates for the purpose of currency and monetary control using operational instruments, such as money market operations.

The bank uses in-depth research and analysis on economic and financial conditions when deciding monetary policy.

The BOJ immediately releases its decisions on monetary policy after each MPM. The bank also holds regular press conferences by the chair of the Policy Board – the Governor – to explain monetary policy decisions.

The Bank also releases the Summary of Opinions at each MPM and the minutes of MPMs. The bank also releases its transcripts 10 years later to provide transparency regarding Policy Board decisions.

The Bank of Japan now has a window of opportunity to get interest rates “a little bit back closer to normal,” said Izumi Devalier of BofA Global Research.

In the near term, Japan’s central bank could make a one-off policy adjustment to increase interest rates and to give a “Little bit more flexibility” for long-term yields to trade, said the BofA chief Japan economist.

Japan adopted negative interest rates in 2016 in an effort to combat decades of deflation by encouraging borrowing and spending.

While many economies are struggling with surging inflation, consumer prices have been relatively stagnant in Japan for years.

Subsiding deflation risks are a “Paradigm shift” for Japan, she said, adding the country is possibly heading towards a sustained inflation level of 1%. “The new government under Kishida is also less supportive of reflation, or especially aggressive BOJ easing at all costs,” she said.

“However, the Bank of Japan is going to remain very cautious, especially with the developments around Ukraine, and the downside risks to the global economy from the development,” Devalier said.

With oil prices rising, she said this might mean “Upside risks to Japan’s inflation outlook and downside risks to growth.” She noted Japan is a net energy importer with a majority of its crude oil from the Middle East and Russia.

It aims to finance the perfect national economy development through stabilizing the prices.

The Bank also decides and executes the financial policies.

The Financial policy operation principles are decided by Policy Meeting and Monetary Policy Meeting, and concretized by the supplying and absorption of money in the market by the daily money market adjustment.

Bank Of Japan: Japan Yield Curve Control Regime

In April 2013 and January 2016, the new Governor Haruhiko Kuroda led the Bank of Japan to initiate Quantitative and Qualitative Monetary Easing and QQE with Negative Interest Rate Policy to deal with this issue.

Even after three years since QQE was implemented, the inflation rate was still below 2 percent.

In September 2016, the BOJ introduced QQE with Yield Curve Control-a new program that targets both short-term and long-term policy interest rates, to resolve the issues created by QQE and QQE with NIRP, aiming at an inflation overshooting target of 2%. This Capstone project aimed to analyze the reasons behind the BOJ’s shift to YCC, as well as the implementation and market impact of the new policy framework.

The Capstone report first covered the background, objectives, rationale, and market impact of the BOJ’s QQE and QQE with NIRP, identifying the limitations of the two policies, including a flattened yield curve and deterioration of financial institutions’ profitability.

The report then proceeded to provide a detailed analysis of the design, communication, implementation, and market impact of the BOJ’s YCC policy.

Finally, the report reviewed the Fed’s current monetary policy tools and explains how YCC could fit into the Central Bank’s toolkit.

The Capstone report and final presentation incorporated several key recommendations from the client.

Herman Miller, Inc. is an American company that produces office furniture, equipment, and home furnishings.

In 1909, Dirk Jan De Pree began working for the company as a clerk, and became its president by 1919, when it was renamed the Michigan Star Furniture Co. De Pree and his father-in-law, Herman Miller, purchased 51% of the company stock in 1923 and renamed it the Herman Miller Furniture Company.

Under Rohde’s supervision Herman Miller entered the contract furniture market in 1942, with the introduction of the “Modular Executive Office” Group, the first in a long line of office furnishings to be produced by the company.

Beginning in the late 1940s, the period under Nelson’s guidance saw Herman Miller produce some of the company’s most recognizable pieces of furniture, including the Noguchi table, Eames Lounge Chair, Marshmallow sofa, Ball clock, and the Sling sofa.

George Nelson’s influence at Herman Miller gradually declined during the 1970s as new designers joined the company, including Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf, who co-designed the Equa chair and in the 1990s developed the highly-successful Aeron chair.

In November of 2021, the company rebranded as MillerKnoll.

Management of the company has expressed concerns about global warming, and the company was using 27% renewable energy as of 2007.

Working At HNI Corporation: 148 Reviews

At first you will be treated fairly, and almost as family, but very soon after your training is finished, you’re thrown right into the fire.

Management is very keen on keeping lines as short staffed as humanly possible, regardless of how many people are doing multiple jobs.

Sometimes they’ll even keep a line so short staffed they’ll have employees doing jobs that are above their pay grade.

Very hard to move up, as long as you’re a line worker.

Favoritism, and bad decision making runs hard here, so someone who is not even remotely qualified for a higher position could potentially beat you out for it, all because the supervisor liked them more, even though you break your body every day you go in, and work as hard as possible.

A lot of problems, or complaints don’t go ignored, however most of the time you get told either “You get paid too much to be complaining,” or “Is what it is.” You’ll mostly get told that by people who sit in offices all day.

Highly inconsistent hours, bad management, never any staffing.

Rapid CLIA-waived molecular tests are available for the simultaneous detection of influenza A and B and the trio of influenza A/B and RSV. These tests are similar to cleared CLIA-waived molecular tests for group A streptococcus and have the potential to make sensitive molecular diagnosis available in emergency departments, urgent care centers, and physician offices.

Molecular diagnostics is the outcome of the fruitful interplay among laboratory medicine, genomics knowledge, and technology in the field of molecular genetics, especially with significant discoveries in the field of molecular genomic technologies.

In this chapter, we provide an overview of the field of molecular diagnostics and of the molecular diagnostic methods that are described in the chapters that are included in this textbook.

The implementation of new high complexity tests and integration of new technologies into the clinical molecular diagnostics laboratory has been critical towards advancement to the goal of achieving precision medicine.

The last 20 years have seen, at last, the long-promised marriage of molecular biology with clinical medicine, with a consequent explosion in molecular test volume and variety, and broad awareness of their existence among both physicians and the lay public.

It is now unusual to read a paper in any of the major medical journals that does not include some molecular procedure in its Materials and Methods section, while a new generation of journals, books, and professional societies devoted entirely to molecular diagnostics has emerged.

Molecular Diagnostics > Fact Sheets > Yale Medicine

PhD, director of the molecular diagnostics laboratory at Yale School of Medicine, explains that these at-home kits cannot provide the level of detail and information that patients receive from a place like the Yale Center for Genomic Analysis.

What are examples of common molecular diagnostics tests?

Doctors can perform a molecular test of a common inherited hereditary cancer.

An HIV patient can be monitored by a quantitative molecular test to determine whether or not the amount of viral load has significantly increased, which is a sign of resistance to the treatment.

What makes Yale Medicine’s approach to molecular diagnostics unique?

“We have clinicians – both pathologists and oncologists – who want our department to remain at the forefront of new developments in molecular diagnostics testing, so that they can make available more therapeutic options to their patients,” Howe says.

“We are constantly striving to make our testing more extensive and cutting-edge at Yale Medicine,” Howe says.

Molecular Diagnostic Methods

Molecular diagnostic testing combines laboratory testing with the precision of molecular biology and has revolutionized the way clinical and public health laboratories investigate the human, viral, and microbial genomes, their genes, and the products they encode.

Molecular diagnostic tests are increasingly being used, and have supplanted numerous conventional tests, in many areas of laboratory medicine including oncology, infectious diseases, clinical chemistry, and clinical genetics.

Advancements in molecular diagnostic testing will continue to improve the accuracy and speed by which we can detect microbial pathogens or analyze a patient’s genes, and is becoming an essential aspect of patient-tailored interventions and therapeutics.

CDC’s Division of Laboratory Systems continues to advance the quality of clinical laboratory testing and the molecular tools used in clinical practice.

Molecular diagnostics is a collection of techniques used to analyze biological markers in the genome and proteome, and how their cells express their genes as proteins, applying molecular biology to medical testing.

In the 1980s, the phrase was used in the names of companies such as Molecular Diagnostics Incorporated and Bethseda Research Laboraties Molecular Diagnostics.

Because molecular diagnostics methods can detect sensitive markers, these tests are less intrusive than a traditional biopsy.

Molecular diagnostics tests such as microarray comparative genomic hybridisation test a sample of DNA instead, and because of cell-free DNA in plasma, could be less invasive, but as of 2013 it is still an adjunct to the conventional tests.

The name Komatsu came into existence in 1921 when the ironworks separated from the mining company to become Komatsu Ltd. Tashiro Shiraishi, an engineer, was the founder and first president, serving until 1925.

Komatsu sharpened its competitive edge in the U.S. market by forming a joint venture with Dresser Industries, Inc., Komatsu Dresser Company.

Record results from the still buoyant U.S. and European economies were not enough to keep Komatsu from falling into the red for the fiscal year ending in March 1999-the first full-year loss in the company’s history.

Sheldon’s task was to overhaul Komatsu’s system of financial management, prepare the company for an eventual listing on the New York Stock Exchange, and lay the foundation for revamping the company through takeovers and spinoffs of noncore operations.

For a Japanese company to hire a foreigner for such a high-level position was quite bold, and it was indicative of Anzaki’s desire to transform Komatsu into a more American- or European-style company.

Komatsu Ltd. engages in the manufacture and sale of construction and mining equipment, utility devices, forest and industrial machineries.

It operates through the following business segments: Construction Machinery and Vehicles, Retail Finance, Industrial Machinery, and Others.

The Construction Machinery and Vehicle segment covers machineries for mining, loading, transportation, underground construction, and recycling.

It also includes leveling roadbed for machinery, industrial vehicle, engine, other machineries and.

The Retail Finance segment offers sales financing related to construction and mining machineries.

The Industrial Machinery and Others segment covers forming and sheet metal machinery, machine tools, defense related, temperature controlled equipment, prefabricated house for business, and semiconductor exposure equipment for excimer laser.

The company was founded by Meitaro Takeuchi on March 13, 1921 and is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.

Sugar Shack

“Sugar Shack” is a song written in 1962 by Keith McCormack.

“Sugar Shack” hit No. 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Cashbox singles charts.

Its run on the Billboard R&B chart was cut short because Billboard ceased publishing an R&B chart from November 30, 1963 to January 23, 1965.

“Sugar Shack” has the distinction of being the last single to make it to No. 1 on the Billboard R&B chart because Billboard did not publish an R&B chart for fourteen months.

In Canada the song was No. 1, also for five weeks, from October 14 to November 11.

On November 29, 1963, the song received RIAA certification for selling over a million copies, earning gold record status.

In the UK, “Sugar Shack” also reached No. 45 on the Record Retailer chart.

Types, Costs, And How They Work

Crystalens HD is the only accommodating IOL that has been approved by the FDA. Synchrony is a dual-optic IOL that is showing promise, but hasn’t been approved yet by the FDA. In small case studies this IOL has demonstrated the ability to restore focus at a range of 1.00 to 5.00 diopters, which is about twice that of a control group.

Staar Surgical IOL was the first toric IOL available in the United States.

Talk with your eye doctor about other types of toric IOLs.

SofPort Advanced Optics IOLs are designed to be aberration-free, and SofPort is the first and only IOL with two aspheric surfaces for optimal visual outcomes.

Monovision involves implanting one type of IOL in one eye to provide near vision and a different IOL in the other eye to provide distance vision.

If you can’t adjust to monovision after your cataract surgery, you might regret not choosing a multifocal or accommodating IOL instead. Some surgeons, at your request, will trial-fit a cataract patient in monovision contact lenses prior to inserting monovision IOLs, since once the surgery is complete you can’t go back.

Phakic intraocular lenses are used to treat myopia and hyperopia, and they differ from other types of IOLs in that they do not require they eye’s natural lens to be removed.

Intraocular Lens Implants: Purpose, Procedure, Risks, & Recovery

An intraocular lens implant is an artificial replacement for the lens of your eye.

Each eye has a lens – a window made of clear protein and water that sits behind the pupil.

The lens focuses light onto the retina, which sends it to your brain.

As you get older, the proteins change and parts of your lens turn cloudy.

An intraocular lens implant, or IOL, is made of a clear plastic, and it’s about a third the size of a dime.

Break the lens up into pieces and remove it bit by bit.

It’s rare after an intraocular lens implant, but you might notice bleeding or get an infection.

Lviv – Russia widened its targets in Ukraine on Sunday with strikes on a military base just miles from the Polish border, as a top Ukrainian advisor said the capital Kyiv was itself now “a city under siege.”

While western Ukraine has largely been spared so far, Russian air strikes overnight carried the war deep into the west, killing 35 people at a military base near Yavoriv, outside the city of Lviv – which is dangerously close to the frontier with EU and NATO member Poland, local officials said.

A humanitarian column headed there had to turn back again on Sunday, a city official told AFP, after the Russians “Did not stop firing.”

A total of 2,187 residents have now died in days of relentless Russian bombardment, the city council said Sunday.

“Russians are bombing the city even during official negotiations,” Defence Minister Reznikov said.

Russia’s forces had earlier focused on eastern and southern areas of Ukraine – home to more ethnic Russians – but in recent days they have moved to the centre, striking the city of Dnipro, and now to the west, with the attack near Poland.

In the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson, Russian troops fired warning shots after thousands of locals gathered to protest the invasion, local media said.

Intraocular Cataract Lenses: Premium, Aspheric, Toric

During your preoperative exam and consultation, your cataract surgeon can help you choose the best IOL for your needs, as well as additional cataract surgery costs involved if you choose one of the following premium lens implants.

Toric IOLs are premium intraocular lenses that correct astigmatism as well as nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Prior to the development of toric IOLs, cataract surgeons had to perform a procedure call limbal relaxing incisions to correct astigmatism during or after cataract surgery.

Accommodating IOLs are premium intraocular lenses that expand the range of clear vision with both an aspheric design and flexible “Haptics” – the supporting legs that hold the IOL in place inside the eye.

Many people find these premium IOLs greatly reduce their need for reading glasses or computer glasses after cataract surgery, while providing exceptionally clear distance vision similar to that offered by a monofocal IOL. Popular accommodating IOLs available in the U.S. include Crystalens AO and Trulign Toric IOL, both made by Bausch + Lomb.Multifocal IOLs.

The best visual outcome after cataract surgery is achieved by using a different type of premium IOL in each eye.

Therefore you will incur additional out-of-pocket expenses for your cataract surgery if you choose a premium IOL. Medicare and private health insurance or vision insurance policies generally do cover the cost of cataract surgery, including the cost of a conventional monofocal IOL. If you choose a premium IOL like one described above, typically you will have to pay the difference in cost between a conventional monofocal IOL and the premium lens implant.

Intraocular Lens

If the natural lens is left in the eye, the IOL is known as phakic, otherwise it is a pseudophakic, or false lens.

During CLEAR, the crystalline lens is extracted and an IOL replaces it in a process that is very similar to cataract surgery: both involve lens replacement, local anesthesia, last approximately 30 minutes, and require making a small incision in the eye for lens insertion.

Phakic IOL refers to an intraocular lens implanted without removal of the patient’s original crystalline lens, and this is performed solely to correct refractive error in the presence of a clear crystalline lens.

Pseudophakic IOL refers to a lens implanted during cataract surgery, immediately after removal of the patient’s crystalline lens.

Anterior chamber IOL. A less-common type of intraocular lens, which is sometimes used if a PCIOL is not an option for a patient or if the situation requires a phakic IOL. Pseudophakic IOLs are lenses implanted during cataract surgery, immediately after removal of the patient’s crystalline lens.

Phakic IOLs are intraocular lenses which are placed in an eye that still contains a natural human crystalline lens.

Dr. Patrick H. Benz of Benz Research and Development created the first IOL material to incorporate the same UV-A blocking and violet light filtering chromophore that’s present in the human crystalline lens in order to attempt to protect the retina after cataract extraction of the natural crystalline lens.

American Association For Pediatric Ophthalmology And Strabismus

An intraocular lens implant is a synthetic, artificial lens placed inside the eye that replaces the focusing power of a natural lens that is surgically removed, usually as part of cataract surgery.

The required lens power is high, and the corrective lens is typically very thick.

The third option is to place a permanent IOL inside the eye, making compliance less of an issue.

Children’s eyes can develop inflammation after cataract surgery, especially when an IOL is placed.

The placement an IOL in a child eye is made after a thorough eye examination followed by a discussion with the parent/guardian about the risks and benefits of an IOL versus a contact lens or glasses.

An IOL is frequently utilized when cataract surgery is performed after the first birthday.

If a contact lens or glasses are used initially, secondary IOL insertion can be considered when the child is older and eye growth more complete.

Intraocular Lenses

Doctors are implanting lenses that can correct these things and even more.

Dr. Dharmendra Patel says the new lenses he’s implanting will take care of the cloudiness caused by the cataract, plus they’ll fix a whole lot more.

You will get correction for distance vision, which is similar to LASIK, but you also get the correction for near vision or reading vision, and that’s something that’s very unique to these implants.

Vivien Williams: Another patient, Joyce Wisby, got the new intraocular implants a few months ago.

Vivien Williams: Joyce says, after a lifetime of poor vision made worse by cataracts, she can finally see the fine print without glasses or contacts.

Vivien Williams: A 15-mininute operation for a lifetime of better vision.

Dr. Patel says these lenses are most commonly used for people with cataracts, but younger people who want correction from nearsightedness could benefit too.

ScienceDirect Topics

Aseptic processing can be defined as the processing and packaging of a commercially sterile product into sterilised containers followed by hermetic sealing with a sterilised closure in a manner that prevents viable microbiological recontamination of the sterile product.

5.9 Aseptic processing facilitiesAseptic processing.

An aseptic processing facility is a building containing clean rooms in which air supply and equipment are regulated to control microbial contamination, and the products are processed and then packaged without any further contamination.

In the aseptic process, the aseptic filler is designed to sterilize the package material, fill the sterile product into the package in a sterile environment, and then hermetically seal the package.

Aseptic filling differs from other traditional methods of food packaging in that the food product and the package are continuously sterilized separately and then meet in the sterile environment provided by the aseptic filler.

Important factors in the aseptic filling process are the type of product, type of package, obtaining and maintaining a sterile environment for filling, and the sealing process.

As the food product and package are sterilized separately, a wide variety of package designs and materials can be used for aseptic processing as compared to pasteurization or retorting.

Before aseptic assembly into a final product, the individual parts of the final product 2 Due to their nature, certain products are aseptically processed at an earlier stage in the process, or in their entirety.

In any facility designed with an unclassified room adjacent to the aseptic processing room, a substantial overpressure from the aseptic processing room should be maintained at all times to prevent contamination.

19 Contains Nonbinding Recommendations VIII. TIME LIMITATIONS 21 CFR 211.111 states that “When appropriate, time limits for the completion of each phase of production shall be established to assure the quality of the drug product. Deviation from established time limits may be acceptable if such deviation does not compromise the quality of the drug product. Such deviation shall be justified and documented.” When appropriate, time limits must be established for each phase of aseptic processing.

Environmental monitoring data from the process simulation can also provide useful information for the processing line evaluation.

Subsequently, routine semi-annual qualification conducted for each processing line will evaluate the state of control of the aseptic process.

Once corrections are instituted, process simulation run(s) should be performed to confirm that deficiencies have been corrected and the process has returned to a state of control.

The number of units filled during the process simulation should be based on contamination risk for a given process and sufficient to accurately simulate activities that are representative of the manufacturing process.

Aseptic Processing

Aseptic processing is a processing technique wherein commercially thermally sterilized liquid products are packaged into previously sterilized containers under sterile conditions to produce shelf-stable products that do not need refrigeration.

Split pea soup was treated using the Dole aseptic machine at the following dosage: heat time of 140-146 °C for 3.53 seconds, hold time of 8.8 seconds, and cooling to 32 °C in 14.0 – 17.0 seconds, compared to the normal processing time of 40-70 minutes at 115-121 °C. The lack of consumer interest drove foods that were processed in the Dole aseptic machine to be discontinued.

Equipment used in aseptic processing of food and beverages must be sterilized before processing and remain sterile during processing.

Due to the significantly lower processing time and temperature range used in aseptic processing compared to conventional sterilization, such as canning, products that are aseptically processed are able to retain more nutrients.

The Better Process Control School provides a section on aseptic processing and packaging systems, and will meet the FDA requirement for supervisors of aseptic operations.

Processing authorities are responsible for aseptic systems must be aware of certain factors unique to aseptic processing and packaging operations, therefore specific knowledge in this area is essential.

The FDA does exert authority over the types of aseptic processing and packaging systems that can be utilized to produce foods for distribution in U.S. commerce by reviewing and either accepting or rejecting process filing forms from individual processing firms.

Includes tightened media fill criteria – „Clarifies‟ controversial environmental monitoring issues – Includes annex for Advanced Aseptic Processing.

You do not have justification that adequate active air sampling locations during aseptic filling operations.

Your firm failed to design and perform an adequate aseptic process simulation based upon the same controls used for routine production.

Samples of each batch of filled syringes and vials in buildings XX and XX are not checked during the process for integrity according to appropriate procedures, since only dimensional and positional parameters are checked during the process.

Thus, batches were released with important rejection rates for glass particles after human visual inspection.

This visual inspection was considered perfect for the detection of glass particles in freezedried products without any specific validation.

What Is The Role Of Aseptic Processing In The Beverage Industry?

Aseptic processing produces shelf-stable products that do not require refrigeration by packaging commercially thermally sterilized liquid products into previously sterilized containers under sterile conditions.

Aseptic processing comprises three primary steps: thermal sterilization, sterilization of the packaging material, and sterility preservation during packaging.

Aseptic processing and packaging is the aseptic filling of a commercially sterile product into sterilized containers, followed by hermetical dealing with a sterilized closure in a microorganism-free environment.

9 considerations for aseptic processing in beverage Compatibility of products.

The first step in aseptic processing planning is determining whether your product is compatible with aseptic processing.

Every process step and piece of equipment used in aseptic processing must be designed and validated to produce consistently safe and high-quality products.

Aseptic processing offers many benefits to food and beverage producers but must be carefully evaluated.

These may be: Aseptic assembly of equipment before use Siliconing of the vial turntable Fill weight checks Bubble point testing of filters Component additions Environmental monitoring Any other intervention that is part of the normal process Stoppages due to meal or rest breaks CBE – 107 V1 Media Fills 24 Non-Routine Interventions Non-routine interventions are any interventions that are corrective and are or should be uncommon.

Examples are: In process adjustment of the machine tracks Removing defective seals on containers Removing vials from the line that have jammed the machine Removing vials from the line that have fallen over Product filter change Replacement of filling needle or hose Product spillage or leakage Poorly fitting stoppers that require more manual manipulation Any other problem that requires manual correction CBE – 107 V1 Media Fills 25 Grade A Intervention Rules Make sure the machine is stopped first ALWAYS sanitise hands thoroughly before going into Grade A space Keep as much of your body as possible out of the cabinet NEVER lean over to top of an open vial, stopper/cap bowl or the filling needle.

Use sterile forceps to retrieve or remove upturned vials Do not intervene to remove stoppers, vials, caps that are not interfering with processing – clean up at the end Sample gloves post intervention Practice good aseptic technique EVERY TIME! CBE – 107 V1 Media Fills 26 Process Validation – Media Fills The Media Fill Trial is a simulation of the filtration and aseptic filling process, which substitutes a microbiological growth medium for a sterile product.

The Media Fill Trial provides to evaluate aseptic processing operations that may affect the sterility of the final product, and the performance of aseptic filling personnel under operational conditions.

CBE – 107 V1 Media Fills 27 Pre-requisites to Process Validations Critical area are qualified and HVAC HEPA filters certified Environmental monitoring procedures are qualified Environmental monitoring media is approved for use Equipment and component sterilisations steps are validated Sterile filtration of bulk products is validated Media used in simulations is qualified Staff involved in the media fill are qualified in aseptic gowning Staff entering the filling area are trained in aseptic technique.

CBE – 107 V1 Media Fills 32 Duration of a Media Fill? The duration of the run should: Simulate the expected maximum time for routine manufacture Include all production shifts.

The validated maximum run tome should be included in batch records CBE – 107 V1 Media Fills 33 How Many Units should be filled The number of units should be large enough to yield a high probability of detecting low incidences of contamination.

Nitrogen Oxide Sensor

A nitrogen oxide sensor or NO x  sensor is typically a high-temperature device built to detect nitrogen oxides in combustion environments such as an automobile, truck tailpipe or smokestack.

In many applications with exhaust-gas treatment systems, one NOx sensor is used upstream of the exhaust-gas treatment system and a second sensor is used downstream of the exhaust-gas treatment system.

The upstream sensor is used for the aforementioned feedback loop.

The downstream sensor is used mainly to confirm that the legislated emissions limits have not been exceeded.

The majority of NO x  sensors developed have been made out of ceramic type metal oxides, with the most common being yttria-stabilized zirconia, which is currently used in the decades-old oxygen sensor.

To get a signal from the sensor a pair of high-temperature electrodes such as noble metals or other metal oxides are placed onto the surface and an electrical signal such as the change in voltage or current is measured as a function of NO x  concentration.

In addition due to the harsh environment of combustion the high gas flow rate can cool the sensor which alters the signal or it can delaminate the electrodes over time and soot particles can degrade the materials.

Filtration Meaning, Process, Method, Examples

The mixtures are of two main types: homogeneous mixtures and heterogeneous mixtures.

A homogeneous mixture is a mixture that is uniform throughout.

A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture that is not uniform throughout, i.e., ingredients of the mixture are distributed unequally.

Air is a homogeneous mixture of different gases, including oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and water vapour.

Homogeneous mixtures are sometimes also called solutions; especially when it is a mixture of a solid dissolved in a liquid.

Different types of filters are used to purify and for separation of mixtures from the contaminants.

The process of filtration can become a costly process when it comes to water treatment and water purification.

Filtration

Filtration is a physical separation process that separates solid matter and fluid from a mixture using a filter medium that has a complex structure through which only the fluid can pass.

Some adsorption devices containing activated charcoal and ion-exchange resin are commercially called filters, although filtration is not their principal mechanical function.

In animals, renal filtration removes waste from the blood, and in water treatment and sewage treatment, undesirable constituents are removed by adsorption into a biological film grown on or in the filter medium, as in slow sand filtration.

Due to the absence of a stem in the filter funnel, there is a decrease in the surface area of contact between the solution and the stem of the filter funnel, hence preventing re-crystallization of solid in the funnel, adversely affecting the filtration process.

Such biofilms coat the rocks of most rivers and the sea and they provide the key filtration capability of the Schmutzdecke on the surface of slow sand filters and the film on the filter media of trickling filters which are used to create potable water and treat sewage respectively.

Compressed breathing air production, where the air passes through a particulate filter before entering the compressor, which removes particles likely to damage the compressor, followed by droplet separation after post-compression cooling, and final product adsorption filtration to remove gaseous hydrocarbons contaminants and excessive water vapour.

Water Handbook

Anthracite/sand filter beds normally provide all of the advantages of single-media filtration but require less backwash water than sand or anthracite alone.

Pressure filters are similar to gravity filters in that they include filter media, supporting bed, underdrain system, and control device; however, the filter shell has no wash water troughs.

Anthracite filters associated with hot process softeners require a backwash rate of 12-15 gpm/ft² because the water is less dense at elevated operating temperatures.

Cold water should not be used to backwash a hot process filter.

For cleaning of rapid downflow filters, clean water is forced back up and through the media.

In surface washing, strong jets of high-pressure water from fixed or revolving nozzles assist in breaking the filter surface crust.

Following backwash, a small amount of rinse water is filtered to waste, and the filter is returned to service.

Smoking and Inflammation The anti-inflammatory effects of noni juice are often exaggerated by supplement manufacturers.

The findings, while promising, do not suggest that noni juice can mitigate the effects of smoking or that noni juice can render similar benefits in non-smokers.

Noni juice is high in potassium and should be avoided by people with kidney, heart, and liver disease as well as those taking potassium-sparing diuretics, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, or angiotensin receptor blockers.

Typically sourced from the Tahitian or Hawaiian noni fruit, noni juice is available in many health food stores, usually in pasteurized or fermented juice forms.

Where can you find fresh noni fruit? Unless you live in Hawaii, the Caribbean, or some other tropical region, it is unlikely that you will find noni fruit in the produce aisle.

Noni Juice Benefits, Nutrition Facts And How To Use

What is noni juice made out of? The noni tree, which goes by the scientific name Morinda citrifolia, grows a fruit that is bumpy and yellowish-white in color.

Because oxidative stress is linked to so many health problems, benefits of noni juice may include lowering your risk for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease and age-related macular degeneration.

Can noni juice cure cancer? While there isn’t evidence that it’s a cancer treatment, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that noni – as well as ginkgo biloba, isoflavones, pomegranate and grapeseed extract – may be cancer-fighting foods that can help with prevention by supporting the immune system.

Tahitian-sourced noni juice is also associated with reported health benefits including increased energy, improved well-being, fewer infections, improved sleep, and reduced asthma symptoms.

You can juice fresh noni fruit at home if you have a juicer, or you can purchase already-made noni juice at specialty grocery stores or online.

Noni juice is packed with antioxidants, including iridoids, that may provide numerous health benefits.

Two clinical trials found that drinking 4 ounces of noni juice daily for 1 month reduced the levels of cancer-causing chemicals in tobacco smokers by about 45%. Yet, noni juice does not negate all of smoking’s negative health effects – and should not be considered a replacement for quitting.

The European Food Safety Authority then re-evaluated the fruit, concluding that noni juice alone did not cause these effects.

In 2009, EFSA issued another statement confirming the safety of noni juice for the general population.

It’s also important to remember that – despite exhibiting some benefits for smokers – noni juice should not be considered a preventative measure for tobacco-related illnesses or a replacement for quitting.

Noni juice is made from the fruit of the noni plant, which is a small evergreen tree in the coffee family that grows in the Pacific Islands, Southeast Asia, Australia, and India.

Noni juice is made like most juices – from pressing the berries and combining the juices with water and sometimes with sweeteners.

This juice has been popular in traditional medicine around the world for many years, and people drink noni juice to help with a variety of ailments like general aches and pains, arthritis, constipation, and infections.

While some scientific evidence supports the claims of health benefits from noni juice, more human research is needed to consider juices from different sources and in broader populations.

Many of the perceived health benefits of noni juice are not supported by adequate scientific research.

Although there isn’t a daily recommended intake of noni juice, studies show that drinking up to 750 milliliters, or just over 25 ounces, of noni juice per day is safe.

To get the most health benefits of noni juice, look for options that don’t contain any additives or preservatives.

14 Impressive Benefits Of Noni Juice

While the name may sound odd, noni juice is derived from the fruit of a small evergreen plant called noni – also known as Indian mulberry – normally found in global subtropics and tropics.

Noni juice offers an impressive gamut of helpful vitamins, minerals, and other phytonutrients.

Noni is a plant with multiple benefits ranging from the traditional use of its wood for making tools to its juice being used as first aid or for giving relief from critical illnesses.

The results of a study conducted on noni juice revealed that phytonutrients present in noni juice delay the gastric emptying which slows down the digestion resulting in a slow discharge of sugars in the bloodstream.

Noni juice is extracted from the noni fruit, which comes from a tree in subtropical and tropical regions of the world.

Noni juice is not as widely available as other types of fruit juices, but since the health benefits have been discovered, you can buy it at chain stores such as Walmart.

Buying noni juice online is also a popular option, as cultivating noni trees outside tropical or subtropical regions isn’t easy.
