Since the FFA content of crude soybean oil is low in comparison with most other major vegetable oils, the DAG content of soybean oil is also lower.

Crude degummed soybean oil is defined as pure soybean oil produced from fair to average quality crude soybean oil from which most of the natural gums have been removed by hydration and mechanically separated.

Table 12-F shows the fatty acid distribution of RBD soy oil, photoisomerized soy oil, and the oil extracted from fried potato chips made with CLA-rich soy oil.

The oil extracted from CLA-rich potato chips had statistically similar composition to the oil used to make the chips.

Supply to the neutralization or caustic refining process can be crude oil, crude degummed soybean oil, or a mixture.

Proper employment of a long-mix system will give minimum contents of phosphatides and soaps in the caustic-refined and water-washed soybean oil while keeping neutral oil losses also at a minimum.

Soybean oil has been popular in the United States because it is cheaper than other oils, is readily available, and functions well in most food applications.

Is Soybean Oil Bad For You? Benefits Vs. Side Effects

So is soybean oil healthy or is soybean oil bad for you? Here’s what you need to know about this controversial cooking oil.

Soybean oil is a type of vegetable oil that is derived from the seeds of the soybean plant.

The soybean oil smoke point is around 450 degrees Fahrenheit, which is significantly higher than other oils like unrefined olive, canola or flaxseed oil.

Although there are plenty of benefits associated with this common cooking oil, there are some soybean oil side effects and dangers that should be considered as well.

Conclusion Soybean oil is a type of cooking oil that is made from the seeds of the soybean plant.

Is soybean oil bad for you? Soybean oil is high in vitamin K, has a high smoke point and can help promote heart health, thanks to its content of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Opting for organic, minimally processed soy oil is a good option to maximize the potential health benefits of this common cooking oil.

Soybean Oil

Soybean oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the soybean.

As a drying oil, processed soybean oil is also used as a base for printing inks and oil paints.

In the 2002-2003 growing season, 30.6 million tons of soybean oil were produced worldwide, constituting about half of worldwide edible vegetable oil production, and thirty percent of all fats and oils produced, including animal fats and oils derived from tropical plants.

The major unsaturated fatty acids in soybean oil triglycerides are the polyunsaturates alpha-linolenic acid, 7-10%, and linoleic acid, 51%; and the monounsaturate oleic acid, 23%. It also contains the saturated fatty acids stearic acid, 4%, and palmitic acid, 10%. The high-proportion of oxidation-prone polyunsaturated fatty acid is undesirable for some uses, such as cooking oils.

The resulting oil is called hydrogenated soybean oil.

Soybean oil is one of many drying oils, which means that it will slowly harden upon exposure to air, forming a flexible, transparent, and waterproof solid.

While soybean oil has no direct insect repellent activity, it is used as a fixative to extend the short duration of action of essential oils such as geranium oil in several commercial products.

6 Benefits And Uses Of Soybean Oil

Soybean oil is a vegetable oil that’s extracted from the seeds of the soybean plant.

Soybean oil is a highly refined oil rich in omega-6 fats, and some studies suggest that its consumption may be associated with several negative health effects.

Soybean oil has a relatively high smoke point of about 450°F. For reference, unrefined extra-virgin olive oil has a smoke point of about 375°F, while canola oil has a smoke point of 428-450°F. This makes soybean oil a good option for high-heat cooking methods like roasting, baking, frying, and sautéing, as it can withstand high temperatures without breaking down.

Although soybean oil has been associated with some health benefits, consuming soybean oil regularly may negatively affect overall health.

A study in mice demonstrated that a diet high in soybean oil led to adverse metabolic changes, including increased body fat, high blood sugar, and fatty liver compared to diets high in coconut oil or fructose, a type of sugar.

Although high-quality human research is needed to study the long-term health effects of soybean-rich diets, it’s best to limit intake of omega-6 rich oils like soybean oil and not to rely on soybean oil as your only fat source.

Soybean oil is a common type of cooking oil that’s been associated with several health benefits.

Domestic Worker Definition

Domestic workers are individuals who work for private households.

Some domestic workers may also be required to wear a uniform.

Domestic workers or domestic helpers comprise a significant part of the global workforce in informal employment and because of the lack of enforcement of the legislation that protects them, are among the most vulnerable group of workers.

The ILO states that 83 percent of all domestic workers are women and many are migrant workers.

Because of this, women have steered the domestic work system to maximize the benefits both in their countries and abroad. In the United States, domestic workers do not have the same legal protections afforded to other classes of worker.

Due to the lack of basic labor protections, domestic workers often receive low wages, no retirement or health benefits.

In 2010 the state of New York required mandatory overtime and breaks for all domestic workers.

Domestic Worker

Nowadays with an increase of power, the domestic workers’ community has formed many organizations, such as the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Domestic Workers United, and The South African Domestic Service and Allied Workers Union.

In later portrayals, the employer and guests might wear casual slacks or even jeans, while a male domestic worker wore a jacket and tie or a white dress shirt with black trousers, necktie or bowtie, maybe even a waistcoat, or a female domestic worker either a blouse and skirt or a uniform.

UNICEF considers domestic work to be among the lowest status, and reports that most child domestic workers are live-in workers and are under the round-the-clock control of their employers.

As women currently dominate the domestic labor market throughout the world, they have learned to navigate the system of domestic work both in their own countries and abroad in order to maximize the benefits of entering the domestic labor market.

Employing domestic work from foreign countries can perpetuate the idea that domestic or service work is reserved for other social or racial groups and plays into the stereotype that it is work for inferior groups of people.

The domestic work sector occupies around 6 per cent of the total work force in South Africa, with domestic workers being largely Black African women.

ILO resources on domestic workers: Resource guide on domestic workers, Convention Concerning Decent Work for Domestic Workers, Decent work for domestic workers, Report IV(1).

Domestic Workers

A domestic worker performs child care, household tasks, and/or upkeep of a home or surrounding yard on a regular basis in return for wages or other benefits.

The ILO Employment Injury Benefits Recommendation, 1964, Paragraph 6(1), defines occupational diseases in the following terms: “Each Member should, under prescribed conditions, regard diseases known to arise out of the exposure to substances and dangerous conditions in processes, trades or occupations as occupational diseases.” Two main elements are present in the definition of an occupational disease: the causal relationship between exposure in a specific working environment or work activity and a specific disease; and the fact that the disease occurs among a group of exposed persons with a frequency above the average morbidity of the rest of the population.

10 4 Criteria for incorporating a disease into the ILO list of occupational diseases The List of Occupational Diseases Recommendation, 2002, was adopted at the 90th Session of the International Labour Conference in 2002.

14 7 The common ground achieved through tripartite consultations Scope and contents of the revised list of occupational diseases The definition of the term “Occupational disease” in the Protocol of 2002 to the Occupational Safety and Health Convention, 1981, and the definition of occupational diseases in the Employment Injury Benefits Recommendation, 1964, will define the scope within which the updating of the list of occupational diseases annexed to Recommendation No. 194 by the Meeting will take place.

16 8 Decision-making process at the Meeting of Experts on the Revision of the List of Occupational Diseases Recommendation, 2002 Decisions to incorporate specific diseases in the updated List of Occupational Diseases need to take into account the following general criteria: there is a causal relationship with a specific agent, exposure or work process; they occur in connection with the work environment and/or in specific occupations; they occur among the groups of persons concerned with a frequency which exceeds the average incidence within the rest of the population; and there is scientific evidence of a clearly defined pattern of disease following exposure and plausibility of cause.

A Worker expert pointed out that diseases caused by trichloroethylene were already included in the current list of occupational diseases under item 1.1.11 “Diseases caused by the toxic halogen derivatives of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons”, which included trichloroethylene.

The Worker experts expressed their agreement with the four paragraphs in section 8, “Decision-making process at the Meeting of Experts on the Revision of the List of Occupational Diseases Recommendation, 2002” of the document entitled “Identification and recognition of occupational diseases: Criteria for incorporating diseases in the ILO list of occupational diseases” including the criteria in paragraph 34.

The Meeting agreed that the criteria document “Identification and recognition of occupational diseases: Criteria for incorporating diseases in the ILO list of occupational diseases” should be published as an official ILO publication, to enable others to understand on what basis the list had been updated.

Occupational Disease And Injury

Occupational health has benefited from many astute physicians who have recognized or suspected new occupational diseases, such as bladder neuropathy resulting from a new catalyst in polyurethane foam manufacture, interstitial lung disease in nylon flock workers making upholstery, indium lung disease in workers making sputtering tiles for touch-sensitive screens, and obliterative bronchiolitis in microwave popcorn, flavoring, and coffee processing workers.

Public health investigation of sentinel cases of suspected work-related injury or disease can result in remediation of causal factors and prevention of other cases.

Consultation with NIOSH or with academic centers that have occupational health expertise might be an efficient first step in contributing to the knowledge base of public health prevention of occupational diseases and injuries.

Quantitative Exposure Assessment In contrast to most infectious disease investigations, quantitative exposure assessment is a priority in occupational health investigations.

In 1983, pioneers in occupational health surveillance described 50 sentinel occupational health events that represented failures in prevention that should trigger public health action.

The Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists has developed recommendations for occupational health and injury surveillance, which many state health departments have adopted.

States with considerable initiatives in occupational health, such as California, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin, recently have contributed substantially to understanding new occupational health conditions.

Occupational Disease Legal Definition Of Occupational Disease

A disease resulting from exposure during employment to conditions or substances that are detrimental to health.

An individual suffering from an occupational disease can seek compensation for his or her condition under Workers’ Compensation statutes or such federal legislation as the Black Lung Benefits Act of 1972, 30 U.S.C.A. 901 et seq.

Worker’s compensation statutes typically require that the worker contract the disease during the course of employment; that the disease be peculiar to the worker’s job by virtue of how it is caused and manifested or how job conditions result in a particular hazard, unlike employment in general; and that there be a substantially greater risk of contracting the disease or condition on the job in a different, more serious manner, than in general public experiences.

n. an illness resulting from long-term employment in a particular type of work, such as black lung disease among miners, or cancer among asbestos installers.

If the chances of being afflicted by such an illness are significantly higher than the average in the population then a former employee may receive benefits from Social Security or workmen’s compensation for a work-related disability.

Definition, Causes, & Facts

Occupational medicine is concerned with the effect of all kinds of work on health and the effect of health on a worker’s ability and efficiency.

Occupational diseases are essentially preventable and can be ascribed to faulty working conditions.

The control of occupational health hazards decreases the incidence of work-related diseases and accidents and improves the health and morale of the work force, leading to decreased absenteeism and increased worker efficiency.

Historical overview The preindustrial era The first recorded observation of an occupational disease may be a case of severe lead colic suffered by a worker who extracted metals.

Paralleling the development of new technology and occupational hazards has been the development of occupational health services.

Occupational health services are provided as benefits by employers and generally are separate from other community health services.

Occupational health services in these countries are often most practical and cost-effective when combined with primary health care delivery.

10 Most Common Occupational Diseases

“Work-related diseases” have multiple causes, where factors in the work environment may play a role, together with other risk factors, in the development of such diseases.

An occupational disease is typically identified when it is shown that it is more prevalent in a given body of workers than in the general population, or in other worker populations.

Occupational skin diseases and conditions are generally caused by chemicals and having wet hands for long periods while at work.

Hearing loss: NIOSH conducted a study from 2000 – 2008 among U.S. workers who had higher occupational noise exposures than the general population.

Occupational cancers occur when workers are in contact with carcinogenic substances in their workplace.

According to 2013 statistics presented by the Canadian Mental Health Association, 8 per cent of Canadians who experience a traumatic event develop PTSD.Infectious diseases: NIOSH states that healthcare workers run the risk of contracting infectious diseases such as hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis and even the human immunodeficiency virus.

In situations where there is not a clear way to control a hazard, or if legislation does not impose a limit or guideline, you should seek guidance from occupational health professionals such as an occupational hygienist or safety professional about what is “Good practice” or “Standard practice” when working in that situation.

What Are The Most Common Occupational Diseases In 2022

In our daily life of intensive working hours when the time comes we may wonder what are occupational diseases.

California is one of the pioneer states in recognizing the existence of occupational diseases for purposes of workers compensation.

Occupational diseases and accidents at work are called professional contingencies, as opposed to common contingencies.

Countless cases are reported daily by insurance companies for workers suffering from occupational diseases or injuries.

Workers’ compensation does not yet cover the full costs of occupational injuries and illnesses.

Regardless of how you became ill, the worker is eligible to apply for workers’ compensation with the company where you work.

Workers’ compensation benefits for an occupational disease.

Microprocessor

Microprocessor is a controlling unit of a micro-computer, fabricated on a small chip capable of performing ALU operations and communicating with the other devices connected to it.

Microprocessor consists of an ALU, register array, and a control unit.

The microprocessor fetches those instructions from the memory, then decodes it and executes those instructions till STOP instruction is reached.

Instruction Set It is the set of instructions that the microprocessor can understand.

An 8-bit microprocessor can process 8-bit data at a time.

Data Types The microprocessor has multiple data type formats like binary, BCD, ASCII, signed and unsigned numbers.

Cost-effective The microprocessor chips are available at low prices and results its low cost.

In simple words, a Microprocessor is a digital device on a chip that can fetch instructions from memory, decode and execute them and give results.

Basics of Microprocessor – A Microprocessor takes a bunch of instructions in machine language and executes them, telling the processor what it has to do.

Complex Instruction Set Computer – CISC or Complex Instruction Set Computer is a computer architecture where instructions are such that a single instruction can execute multiple low-level operations like loading from memory, storing into memory, or an arithmetic operation, etc.

Reduced Instruction Set Computer – RISC or Reduced Instruction Set Computer is a computer architecture where instruction is simple and designed to get executed quickly.

Instructions get completed in one clock cycle this is because of the optimization of instructions and pipelining.

DEC Alpha 21264 Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing – EPIC or Explicitly Parallel Instruction Computing permits computers to execute instructions parallel using compilers.

Each bundle contains three instructions which are encoded in 41 bits each and a 5-bit template field(contains information about types of instructions in a bundle and which instructions can be executed in parallel).

Definition & Facts

Microprocessor, any of a type of miniature electronic device that contains the arithmetic, logic, and control circuitry necessary to perform the functions of a digital computer’s central processing unit.

In the early 1970s the introduction of large-scale integration-which made it possible to pack thousands of transistors, diodes, and resistors onto a silicon chip less than 0.2 inch square-led to the development of the microprocessor.

The first microprocessor was the Intel 4004, which was introduced in 1971.

During the early 1980s very large-scale integration vastly increased the circuit density of microprocessors.

The production of inexpensive microprocessors enabled computer engineers to develop microcomputers.

The microprocessor also permitted the development of so-called intelligent terminals, such as automatic teller machines and point-of-sale terminals employed in retail stores.

The microprocessor also provides automatic control of industrial robots, surveying instruments, and various kinds of hospital equipment.

What Is A Microprocessor ? How Does It Work ?

Instruction set in a microprocessor are the bricks which you can use to solve your problem.

So basically a microprocessor takes input from input devices, process it as per instructions given in the memory and produces output.

Instruction set is the group of commands that a microprocessor can understand.

So clock speed refers to the speed at which a microprocessor executes instructions.

RISC is a type of microprocessor architecture which uses small, general purpose and highly optimized instruction set rather than more specialized set of instructions found in others.

RISC offers high performance over its opposing architecture CISC. In a processor, execution of each instruction require a special circuit to load and process the data.

CISC is the opposing microprocessor architecture for RISC. It is made to reduce the number of instructions per program, ignoring the number of cycles per instruction.

What Is A Microprocessor And What Are Its Applications

A microprocessor is a computer processor that combines the functions of a central processing unit on a single integrated circuit, or at most a few integrated circuits.

The microprocessor is thus a multipurpose, clock driven, register based, digital integrated circuit that takes binary data as input, processes it as per the instructions stored in its memory and then produces results as output.

The availability of low cost, low power and small weight, computing capability makes these microprocessors greatly useful in several applications.

Microprocessor-based systems are thus found everywhere today and not just in computers and smartphones: in automatic testing of products, speed control of motors, traffic light control, communication equipment, television, satellite communication, home appliances, such as microwave oven, washing machine, gaming controller, industrial controllers and even specialised applications such as military applications.

MediaTek processors are indeed considered the best in the budget microprocessor segment.

The latest processor from MediaTek is the Helio P90. It is said to support features such as intelligent imaging, better and quick photography, faster and more efficient gaming, and advanced connectivity with dual 4G SIM. What Are Foundation Garments?

Foundation garments of many types are used to change one’s shape so that clothing worn over them show off the figure to its best advantage.

Foundation garments, which may be alternately called shapewear, have undergone many changes throughout the centuries, but they all provide a body foundation, upon which clothing is built.

Some foundation garments can pull in the waist slightly, make the thigh or buttocks appear lifted or smoother, and of course lift the breasts, making them appear supported, and smaller or bigger.

Some foundation garments are uncomfortable, while others, when properly fitting are enjoyed by women as a means to hide a few of what they consider to be figure flaws.

As a whole, trends in foundation garments has moved away from the highly restrictive garments like all in ones, toward much more minimal garments like Spanx® or control top underwear because they are lighter and more comfortable to wear.

In all cases, foundation garments tend to move the female toward the figure form she considers ideal.

Some women prefer to be seen in a more natural light, and prefer no underwear or foundation garments of any type and others use the minimum undergarments.

Foundation Garments – What They Are And Why They Matter – Fabric For Cosplayers

Just like the name suggests, a foundation garment is something worn under your street clothes – or costume – which supports your outer clothing and/or changes the shape of your body, usually to meet the dictates of fashion.

Then wear those garments when you’re taking your measurements.

Biosecurity

In 2001, the US National Association of State Departments of Agriculture defined biosecurity as “The sum of risk management practices in defense against biological threats”, and its main goal as “Protect[ing] against the risk posed by disease and organisms”.

In another document, it describes the aim of biosecurity being “To enhance the ability to protect human health, agricultural production systems, and the people and industries that depend on them”, with the overarching goal being “To prevent, control and/or manage risks to life and health as appropriate to the particular biosecurity sector”.

A 2016 draft handbook on biosecurity education produced by the Bradford Disarmament Research Centre at Bradford University in the UK, where the focus is on the dangers of “Dual-use” research, defines the term as meaning “Successful minimising of the risks that the biological sciences will be deliberately or accidentally misused in a way which causes harm for humans, animals, plants or the environment, including through awareness and understanding of the risks”.

From the late 1990s, in response to the threat of biological terrorism, the term started to include the prevention of the theft of biological materials from research laboratories, called “Laboratory biosecurity” by WHO. The term laboratory biosafety refers to the measures taken “To reduce the risk of accidental release of or exposure to infectious disease agents”, whereas laboratory biosecurity is usually taken to mean “a set of systems and practices employed in legitimate bioscience facilities to reduce the risk that dangerous biological agents will be stolen and used maliciously”.

In the US, the National Science Advisory Board on Biosecurity was created in 2004 to provide biosecurity oversight of “Dual-use research”, defined as “Biological research with legitimate scientific purpose that may be misused to pose a biological threat to public health and/or national security”.

In 2006, the National Academy of Sciences defined biosecurity as “Security against the inadvertent, inappropriate, or intentional malicious or malevolent use of potentially dangerous biological agents or biotechnology, including the development, production, stockpiling, or use of biological weapons as well as outbreaks of newly emergent and epidemic disease”.

A number of nations have developed biological weapons for military use, and many civilian research projects in medicine have the potential to be used in military applications, so biosecurity protocols are used to prevent dangerous biological materials from falling into the hands of malevolent parties.

What is biosecurity? Biosecurity is a strategic and integrated approach to analysing and managing relevant risks to human, animal and plant life and health and associated risks for the environment.

The goal of biosecurity The overarching goal of biosecurity is to prevent, control and/or manage risks to life and health as appropriate to the particular biosecurity sector.

What constitutes a biosecurity hazard? Biosecurity systems are primarily concerned with preventing, controlling or managing hazards to life and health.

Some factors influencing biosecurity Globalization New agricultural production and food processing technologies Increased trade in food and agricultural products Legal obligations for signatories of relevant international agreements Increasing travel and movement of people across borders Advances in communications and global access to biosecurity information Greater public attention to biodiversity, the environment and the impact of agriculture on both Shift from country independence to country interdependence for effective biosecurity Scarcity of technical and operational resources High dependence of some countries on food imports Table 1.

Even within government, bodies responsible for the sectors usually associated with biosecurity – food safety, public health, agriculture, forestry, fisheries and the environment – play the primary role in a contemporary integrated approach to biosecurity.

Requirements for a harmonized and integrated approach to biosecurity The successful implementation of a harmonized and integrated biosecurity approach requires a clear policy and legal framework, an institutional framework that defines the roles and responsibilities of relevant stakeholders, adequate technical and scientific capability, including use of risk analysis, a well-functioning infrastructure for testing and control, and a system for communication and information exchange.

Potential benefits associated with a cross-sectoral approach to biosecurity Conclusions Improved health and well-being of human populations are the ultimate outcomes of functioning biosecurity systems.

Biosecurity: 1. 1. Introduction: What Is Biosecurity?

Biosecurity covers food safety, zoonoses, the introduction of animal and plant diseases and pests, the introduction and release of living modified organisms and their products, and the introduction and management of invasive alien species.

The Biosecurity Principles and Components, which provides a contemporary context for the development and implementation of a harmonized and integrated biosecurity approach across all sectors;.

The toolkit develops the thesis that risk analysis provides a common foundation for biosecurity but fully acknowledges that there is no universally acceptable or standard policy or infrastructure that should govern national biosecurity systems.

Risk analysis processes are at the heart of contemporary approaches to biosecurity and the emergence of risk analysis as a unifying discipline in biosecurity underpins many of the changes in approach that are happening at the national level.

The report highlights in particular the case of Norway or the one of New Zealand which has a high performing, integrated system for managing biosecurity risks to the economy, environment and human health underlining that “New Zealanders understand and have confidence in their biosecurity system, that they are committed and playing their vital role, from pre-border through to pest management”.

One of the scenarios considered is the improvement in biosecurity where, to achieve a common biosecurity goal, risk management gains are made in separate sectors.

With the increasing recognition that biosecurity is an interdependent partnership that requires participation from all biosecurity sectors at the international and national levels, significant benefits are now flowing from aligning approaches and sharing resources.

Department Of Agriculture, Environment And Rural Affairs

Spraying at rates beyond the manufacturer’s instructions will not improve efficacy and increases the risk of groundwater and surface water pollution.

The modern design of large commercial poultry houses and feed stores are usually considered of a good biosecurity standard provided the birds are held within the house and not let out.

These can be sited in most locations provided that they are not adjacent to any water bodies.

It is not advisable to use a nearby water body as a source of water for cleaning out a house as there is a threat posed by the possible presence of wildfowl and faeces, which could be mechanically carried into the poultry house and potentially be a source of avian influenza or Newcastle disease.

Wildfowl tend not to travel further than 1km from a water source in search of food, uncommonly up to 5km and rarely up to 10km. Therefore the further away houses are placed from water bodies the better.

As well as the size of the water body the amount of wetland vegetation around the water body and the depth of the water are equally important in determining the density of wildfowl on such sites.

The presence of wild fowl on a water body encourages more wild fowl to join them – the more the merrier.

A Practical Approach

These silent carriers can easily spread infections to other animals, especially when stressed or housed adjacent to susceptible animals.

Developing a strategy to keep infectious agents and discharges away from susceptible animals, especially critical with herd additions, can help to reduce animal disease and minimize economic loss.

All animal discharges, manure, urine, and fetal fluids should be isolated from the quarantined animals and the established herd.

These external factors coupled with the natural genetic disposition of certain animals provide an animal with either increased or decreased susceptibility to certain infectious diseases.

Such equipment would include feeding equipment for young animals, medical equipment for treating sick or injured animals, obstetrical or other equipment for use in maternity stalls.

On practically every farm there are groups of animals that tend to be the more susceptible to disease and activities that can potentially affect animal groups very differently.

Work in animal contact areasDoes not work in areas with highly susceptible animalsMinimal exposure to high risk animals and only with protective clothingWorks with highly susceptible animals.

Biosecurity

Biosecurity is an important step for all animal operations, regardless of size or species.

These efforts keep animals healthy and your business productive.

The resources on this page can help if you are just getting started, wanting to improve your current biosecurity plan, find species specific information, or develop plans for enhanced biosecurity measures.

Defend The Flock

Biosecurity refers to everything people do to keep diseases – and the viruses, bacteria, funguses, parasites, and other microorganisms that cause disease – away from birds, property, and people.

Structural biosecurity: measures used in the physical construction and maintenance of coops, pens, poultry houses, family farms, commercial farms, and other facilities.

Everyone involved in raising poultry must use structural and operational biosecurity to prepare for and prevent disease outbreaks throughout the United States.

Make sure everyone who has contact with your flock follows biosecurity principles.

In addition to potentially spreading disease from farm to farm or bird to bird, you can also spread germs such as Salmonella that can impact human health.

Provide disposable boot covers and/or disinfectant footbaths for anyone having contact with your flock.

Before allowing service vehicles, trucks, tractors, or tools and equipment-including egg flats and cases that have come in contact with birds or their droppings-to exit the property, make sure they are cleaned and disinfected to prevent contaminated equipment from transporting disease.

Earlier in the rehabilitation process and for more severely impaired people, the psychologist’s role may focus on helping the patient’s family and clinical team to understand how the person’s cognitive impairments and abilities may be contributing to their behavior, impacting on their rehabilitation, or relevant to resumption of their life roles, and working flexibly, practically and intensively with the rehabilitation team to ensure that rehabilitation interventions are suited to the person’s level of cognitive ability and their particular pattern of strengths and limitations.

Later on in the rehabilitation process in outpatient and community settings, or with people who are less severely impaired, the psychologist’s input is likely to involve more 1:1 work focused on the development and implementation of cognitive rehabilitation strategies and helping the person to emotionally adjust to the consequences of their injury or illness.

Cochrane reviews have identified 16 randomized control trials of multi-disciplinary rehabilitation for brain injury and found strong evidence that, for people with moderate-severe injuries, there are benefits of formal rehabilitation, and that more intensive programmes are associated with earlier functional gains.

Finally, in Chapter 16., The impact of music interventions on motor rehabilitation following stroke in elderly, Altenmüller and James present music-supported therapy methods to improve poststroke recovery, with a focus on upper limb and gait rehabilitation, as well as on studies targeting cognitive and psychological outcomes.

Although neurorehabilitation is effective, much remains to be determined in regard to the neural mechanisms involved in the recovery, which specific procedures are most effective, the optimal timing of the delivery of rehabilitation services, and the most efficient and cost-effective rehabilitation team structure.

Neurorehabilitation

Neurologic problems often require rehabilitation to ensure optimal return of function.

Neurorehabilitation is the process of restoration of function for persons with disorders of the nervous system.

Rehabilitation involves restoration of functioning or facilitation of compensatory or adaptive functioning.

The practice of rehabilitation involves a team process, highly dependent on the interaction of multiple treatment agents and factors.

Either way, these problems carry the potential to exacerbate a patient’s physical symptoms and compromise recovery and treatment.

At a 1-year follow-up, patients in the treatment arm showed further reduction in handicap and disability scores, as well as fewer symptoms of the progressive multiple sclerosis relative to patients in the control condition.

In another RCT, patients with sensory loss secondary to stroke and involved in a perceptual-learning based sensory discrimination program showed significantly greater improvement in sensory capacity, as indicated by scores on the Somatosensory Deficit Index, if they also received neurorehabilitation.

Modular-based psychotherapy moves away from manualized, diagnosis-specific psychotherapy to offer a menu of modular treatment components from which clinicians can pick and choose to suit their patients’ needs.

Further, If the needs of the patient change as therapy progresses, as they often do, then the clinician can return to the menu of options and select a different module without deviating from the overall treatment goal.

These symptoms have been shown to exacerbate executive functioning and memory problems experienced by PD patients.

Neurorehabilitation might help a patient like John to challenge these unhealthy cognitions, engage in behavioral activation, and seek support from social resources – all elements in the treatment of depression – but in the larger context of his progressing illness.

Neurorehabilitation

Neurologists have a new toolbox of options for neurorehabilitation of disabling brain disorders such as stroke and traumatic brain injury.

In the mid-20th century, we turned away from the assumption that the effect of a brain injury such as a stroke on function, activity, and participation is permanent and became increasingly aware of the brain’s regenerative potential, as well as dynamic brain reorganization, months and even many years later.

Neurorehabilitation scientists pushed for translational research to define the permissive conditions under which optimal brain change and recovery occurs, apparently requiring controlled, intensive stimulation of impaired brain networks.

Left brain stimulation and arm training after left brain stroke also resulted in language improvement.

Individual differences in brain shape, size, and volume, especially when the brain or skull has been injured, may significantly alter tDCS effects.

If stimulating the brain modulates the relative dominance of interacting brain systems, unexpected effects may occur, such as modulation of neuroimmunologic networks, which need to be carefully considered.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation may induce a permissive brain state therapeutic for depression and promoting better motor and cognitive recovery.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Functional gait disorders are a common and disabling condition.

Consensus-based rehabilitation techniques for treating FGD and other functional neurological disorder presentations at large utilize a variety of therapeutic strategies, including distraction, novel approaches to movement, entrainment, stress/hypervigilance modulation, and psychotherapy.

CASE REPORT: Here we present a case of a 24-year-old woman with a complex history of anxiety, depression, left frontal astrocytoma, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome and FGD. During a multidisciplinary inpatient rehabilitation stay for FGD, the patient underwent rhythmic auditory stimulation delivered by a neurologic music therapist in conjunction with physical therapy, occupational therapy, and psychotherapy.

Improvement in the patient’s truncal displacement, foot dragging, and well as overall gait speed occurred following serial RAS trials performed over a single treatment session.

Although at four-year follow-up the patient’s FGD symptoms remained resolved, fatigue continued to limit her ambulatory capacity and overall endurance.

CONCLUSION: RAS represents a unique therapeutic approach for treating FGD, complementary to existing consensus-based rehabilitation recommendations, and may warrant further consideration by the field.

Keywords: Functional neurological disorder, functional gait disorder, rhythmic auditory stimulation, neurologic music therapy, gait training.

Images in the microwave spectrum can be captured with this camera through partitions such as dry-wall and plywood.

The demonstrated system has a Rayleigh-limited depth resolution of 200 ps, thus facilitating visualization of physical electromagnetic phenomena such as pulse reflections of microwave energy as a function of time propagating through an image.

The microwave camera has applications in the recovery of survivors in disaster situations, imaging in hazardous conditions and non-destructive testing.

Sen. Joe Manchin Joins Republicans In Opposing Sarah Bloom Raskin For Key Fed Post

March 14 – Sen. Joe Manchin said Monday he will not support President Joe Biden’s nomination of Sarah Bloom Raskin to the Federal Reserve Board due to his concerns over her positions on energy policy.

The opposition of the West Virginia Democrat, considered the party’s most conservative U.S. senator, means that at least one Republican would have to back Raskin for her to win confirmation – an unlikely scenario in the evenly divided upper chamber.

Editorial: Joe Manchin Killed Build Back Better. He Just Offered Biden A Way To Resurrect It.

Build Back Better, the massive $2 trillion budget bill Biden hoped would be his signature legislative achievement, has been inert for months.

Since Build Back Better was scuttled in December, America’s economic outlook has arguably gotten worse.

That’s why it’s so important that the day after Biden’s speech, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va, a key holdout on the original bill, offered the president a lifeline.

The editorial board supported the goals of Build Back Better because we believe, as Biden does, that expanded investments in education, housing, health care and in women’s opportunities would have lifted millions of children and others out of poverty.

There should be opportunities to push beyond what Manchin has offered as a starting point, but the bottom line should be a bill that can become law, this year.

The original Build Back Better bill would have spent $555 billion on alternative energy sources, the largest clean energy investment in U.S. history.

Biden may not have been able to push the Build Back Better bill over the finish line.

Joe Manchin To Oppose Nomination Of Sarah Bloom Raskin For Top Fed Watchdog Role

Joe Manchin, the conservative Democratic senator from West Virginia, on Monday announced he would not support the nomination of Sarah Bloom Raskin to the top regulatory role at the Federal Reserve, dealing a major blow to her chances of being confirmed.

Manchin joined senior Republicans in opposing Raskin, who previously served as deputy secretary of the US Treasury and was nominated by President Joe Biden alongside four others to fill senior roles at the central bank, taking issue with her past advocacy for regulators to take a bigger role in policing climate risks.

Manchin is not a member of the powerful Senate banking committee, where Raskin’s nomination has been held up amid a stand-off between Democrats and Republicans.

Politico first reported last week that Manchin wanted Democrats to drop Raskin’s nomination and instead move ahead with a vote on Biden’s four other Fed nominees, including the renomination of Jay Powell as Fed chair and the appointment of Lael Brainard as vice-chair.

A spokesperson for Brown said on Monday: “Senator Brown is working to move forward Ms Bloom Raskin’s nomination with bipartisan support, as Ms Bloom Raskin has earned twice before.”

The Biden administration showed no signs of backing down on Monday, with one official saying: “Sarah Bloom Raskin is one of the most qualified people to have ever been nominated for the Federal Reserve board of governors . . . She has earned widespread support in the face of an unprecedented, baseless campaign led by oil and gas companies that sought to tarnish her distinguished career. We are working to line up the bipartisan support that she deserves.”

Manchin on Monday said the Fed should not “Politicise its critical decisions” and instead called on the central bank to remain “Hyper focused” on quelling inflation, which is running at the fastest pace in 40 years.

Joe Manchin

Manchin won the November 6 general election, defeating Morrisey 49.57%-46.26%. Manchin was first sworn in to the U.S. Senate by Vice President Joe Biden on November 15, 2010, succeeding interim Senator Carte Goodwin.

On December 13, 2010, Manchin participated in the launch of No Labels, a nonpartisan organization “Committed to bringing all sides together to move the nation forward.” Manchin is a co-chair of No Labels.

In 2010, Manchin called for “Repairs” of the Affordable Care Act and repeal of the “Bad parts of Obamacare.” On January 14, 2017, Manchin expressed concern at the strict party-line vote on repealing Obamacare and said he could not, in good conscience, vote to repeal without a new plan in place.

Manchin has mixed ratings from political action committees opposed to illegal immigration; NumbersUSA, which seeks to reduce illegal and legal immigration, gave Manchin a 55% rating and the Federation for American Immigration Reform, which also seeks to reduce legal immigration, gave him a 25% rating.

On February 2, 2021, Manchin announced his opposition to an increase from $7.25 to $15 per hour in the federal minimum wage, but said he was open to a smaller increase, perhaps to $11. Along with seven other Democrats, Manchin opposed a 15$ minimum wage proposal by Bernie Sanders as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 and forced Democrats to limit extended unemployment benefits in the same bill.

In a lawsuit filed in July 2014, John Manchin II, one of Manchin’s brothers, sued Manchin and his other brother, Roch Manchin, over a $1.7 million loan.

The lawsuit alleged that Joe and Roch Manchin borrowed the money to keep the doors open at the family-owned carpet business run by Roch, that no part of the loan had yet been repaid, and that the defendants had taken other measures to evade compensating John Manchin II for non-payment.

Manchin’s formal opposition throws serious doubt on Raskin’s bid to be the Fed’s next vice chair for supervision, one of the most powerful banking regulators in the world.

Raskin is a former Fed governor and served as the deputy Treasury secretary in the Obama administration.

“Sarah Bloom Raskin is one of the most qualified people to have ever been nominated for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors,” a White House spokesperson told CNBC. “She has earned widespread support in the face of an unprecedented, baseless campaign led by oil and gas companies that sought to tarnish her distinguished career. We are working to line up the bipartisan support that she deserves, so that she can be confirmed by the Senate for this important position.”

“Senator Brown is working to move forward Ms. Bloom Raskin’s nomination with bipartisan support, as Ms. Bloom Raskin has earned twice before,” Brown’s office told CNBC in an email.

Manchin, who last week said that his own party should advance Biden’s four other Fed nominees without Raskin, has for weeks worked to support the U.S. energy industry as oil and gas prices climb after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Manchin’s statement Monday suggested that he doesn’t believe Raskin, who has previously called for stronger climate policies and critiqued the energy sector, could serve on the Fed without politicizing her decisions.

His remarks cap a weekslong standoff between Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Banking Committee, where the GOP has boycotted a vote on the president’s candidates out of opposition to Raskin.

Joe Manchin Opposes Sarah Bloom Raskin Nomination To Federal Reserve

WASHINGTON Sen. Joe Manchin announced Monday he won’t support President Joe Biden’s nomination of Sarah Bloom Raskin to serve on the Federal Reserve Board, likey dooming her chances of confirmation.

Biden’s nominations of Raskin and two others to serve on the Federal Reserve Board have been stalled because of Republican opposition to Raskin.

“I have carefully reviewed Sarah Bloom Raskin’s qualifications and previous public statements,” Manchin said in a statement on Monday.

“Her previous public statements have failed to satisfactorily address my concerns about the critical importance of financing an all-of-the-above energy policy to meet our nation’s critical energy needs. I have come to the conclusion that I am unable to support her nomination to serve as a member of the Federal Reserve Board.”

The White House responded to Manchin’s announcement by calling Raskin “One of the most qualified people to have ever been nominated” for the Federal Reserve Board and said it was still “Working to line up the bipartisan support that she deserves” to advance her nomination.

Raskin would become the second major Biden nominee Manchin has sent packing.

Early in 2021, Manchin refused support Neera Tanden’s nomination to the Office of Management and Budget over her past mean tweets directed at some Republican senators, forcing the White House to withdraw the nomination.

Sen. Joe Manchin Signals Opposition To Sarah Bloom Raskin For Fed Post

WASHINGTON-A key Democrat came out against Sarah Bloom Raskin’s nomination to become the Federal Reserve’s top banking regulator, likely dashing her chances of confirmation.

Sen. Joe Manchin, a pivotal vote for Democrats in the 50-50 Senate, said Monday that he couldn’t support Ms. Raskin’s nomination, citing her views on addressing climate change.

Sarah Bloom Raskin

Sarah Bloom Raskin is an American attorney and regulator, who was formerly a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and a former United States Deputy Secretary of the Treasury.

President Obama nominated Raskin to the Federal Reserve Board along with fellow nominees Dr. Janet Yellen, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology economics professor Peter A. Diamond.

As a member of the Federal Reserve Board, Raskin gained a reputation as someone focused on consumer protection and income inequality.

On July 31, 2013, President Barack Obama announced that he would nominate Raskin to the second-in-command position of Deputy Secretary at the United States Department of the Treasury.

During the 2017-18 academic year, Raskin was a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.

In November 2020, Bloom Raskin was reported to be under consideration for Secretary of the Treasury in the Biden Administration.

Raskin is married to Jamie Raskin, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland’s 8th congressional district, and as of 2006 lived in Takoma Park, Maryland.

Sarah Bloom Raskin’S Fed Nomination Appears Doomed After Manchin Opposes Her Record

Sarah Bloom Raskin’s nomination to the Federal Reserve Board appeared all but doomed on Monday after Sen. Joe Manchin III, a key Democratic vote, said he opposed her because of her stance on energy in an era of inflation.

In a statement, White House spokesman Chris Meagher noted that Raskin won bipartisan support for her roles at the Fed and the Treasury Department.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki on Monday said Manchin let the White House know about his opposition to Raskin before making his public announcement.

Manchin – who represents West Virginia and its high concentration of energy jobs – is adding his high-profile voice to those warning the Fed against tackling climate issues.

Fed nominee Sarah Bloom Raskin wants the Fed to tackle climate change risks.

Raskin joined the Reserve Trust board after previously serving as a Fed governor from 2010 to 2014.

In 2017, the Kansas City Fed denied the Colorado firm access to what’s known as a Fed master account, which gives banks direct access to the Fed’s payment systems.

Nomination Of Sarah Bloom Raskin For Fed Seat In Doubt After Manchin Opposition

U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin III will not support one of President Joe Biden’s picks to sit on the Federal Reserve Board, Sarah Bloom Raskin of Maryland, Manchin said Monday.

The announcement casts serious doubt on the chances of Senate confirmation for Raskin, who was a Fed governor from 2010 to 2014 and deputy Treasury secretary from 2014 to 2017.

Manchin, a conservative Democrat from West Virginia seen as the linchpin in the evenly divided U.S. Senate, highlighted a disagreement about energy policy in a statement announcing his opposition to her appointment.

With Manchin in opposition, she would need at least one Republican vote on the Senate floor, but no Senate Republicans have publicly said they would support her.

Toomey echoed Manchin’s reservations about Raskin’s position that the Fed should not invest in fossil fuel producers because climate change makes such investments riskier.

“As Senator Manchin suggested today, Ms. Raskin’s past advocacy for having the Federal Reserve allocate capital and discriminate against traditional energy companies would not only politicize the Fed, but weaken economic growth at a crucial moment in history,” he said.

“Sarah Bloom Raskin is one of the most qualified people to have ever been nominated for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors,” the spokesperson said.

Sarah Bloom Raskin Nomination At Risk After Manchin Rejects Biden Fed Pick

Sarah Bloom Raskin’s nomination to the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors is at risk after Senator Joe Manchin said he is “Unable to support” her on Monday.

President Joe Biden nominated Raskin-who served as a deputy Treasury secretary on the board from 2010 to 2014-to serve as the board’s vice chair of supervision, but she has faced scrutiny from Republicans over remarks about climate policy, delaying a confirmation vote.

Sarah Bloom Raskin’s previous public statements have failed to satisfactorily address my concerns about the critical importance of financing an all-of-the-above energy policy to meet our nation’s critical energy needs.

No Republican senators have indicated they would vote in support of Raskin, but a White House spokesperson told the Associated Press the Biden administration is still backing her and “Working to line up the bipartisan support that she deserves.”

Republicans boycotting a vote on Raskin has also meant a delay in confirmation votes for Biden’s other nominees.

Manchin is a key vote among Senate Democrats, as he represents a solidly Republican state that backed former President Donald Trump by nearly 40 percentage points in 2020.

Raskin is not the first of Biden’s nominees Manchin has opposed.

Sen. Joe Manchin Says He’Ll Oppose Sarah Bloom Raskin’S Nomination To A Key Fed Role

Sen. Joe Manchin says he’s opposed to the nomination of Sarah Bloom Raskin for a top regulatory post at the Federal Reserve, likely spelling defeat for her confirmation in the closely-divided Senate.

Says he wants the Fed to focus on what he calls the most pressing issues – rising inflation and energy costs – and he’s not convinced that Raskin shares those priorities.

Biden had named Raskin along with four other Fed nominations, including a second term for Jerome Powell as Fed chair, a vice chair post for Lael Brainard, and board seats for two economists: Lisa Cook and Philip Jefferson.

Committee chairman Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, has refused to separate Raskin’s nomination from the other four Fed picks.

Biden nominated Raskin to serve as the Fed’s Vice Chair of Supervision, overseeing bank regulation.

Committee Republicans have questioned whether Raskin improperly used her connections at the central bank to secure a coveted Fed master account for Reserve Trust, giving the company access to the central bank’s payment system.

Raskin is married to Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., who helped lead the second impeachment of former President Trump.

Four Big Reasons Not To Confirm Biden’S Fed Nominee Sarah Bloom Raskin

The Senate confirmation of President Biden’s nominee to be the Federal Reserve’s Vice Chairwoman for supervision of banks, Sarah Bloom Raskin, ran into some rough waters recently.

The Senate Banking Committee should reject Raskin’s nomination this month for four reasons: swampy corruption, a lack of trust, wrongheaded policies, and strategic cluelessness.

In Raskin’s case, this entailed being invited on the board of Reserve Trust, a financial technology firm that had a big problem-it needed a Master Account from the Fed for its business model to work.

Enter Raskin and a friendly phone call with the Kansas City Fed and, before you know it, Reserve Trust becomes the first fintech firm with a Master Account.

After some two years of service on the board with Reserve Trust’s value now enhanced, Raskin sold the shares she was granted for almost $1.5 million to Amias Gerety, her fellow Obama-era Treasury Department alum.

SARAH BLOOM RASKIN OPPOSED BY 24 STATE FINANCIAL OFFICERS OVER ‘RADICAL’ VIEW. Under questioning from senators, Raskin pledged that she would not act upon her past repeated threats to defund America’s domestic energy industry.

Raskin’s long record of hostility to American energy-oil and gas-is a particularly bad policy in the best of times and even more so now as the nation, and the Fed grapples with accelerating inflation.

Rep. Jamie Raskin Failed To Report Huge Stock Payout For His Wife, A Biden Fed Nominee

Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin violated a federal conflict-of-interest law by failing to properly disclose stock shares that his wife – President Biden’s nominee to be the Federal Reserve’s top banking regulator – received for her work at a Colorado-based financial technology company, a source familiar with the matter told FOX Business.

Jamie Raskin’s failure to promptly disclose the shares that his wife sold marks a violation of the Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act.

Rep. Jamie Raskin Recalls Son’S Suicide Just Days Before Jan. 6 Capitol Riot

In an emotional sit-down interview, Rep. Jamie Raskin opened up about the death of his son by suicide just days before the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol and how as part of the House committee investigating the attack he won’t let “American democracy go down the tubes.”

Raskin’s son, Tommy, died by suicide on Dec. 31, 2020, at the age of 25 after struggling with mental illness.

“The darkness of the time overcame him,” said Raskin, who said he found his son lifeless, along with a note.

“Please forgive me. My illness won today. Please look after each other, the animals, and the global poor for me. All my love, Tommy,” the letter read. So when thousands of protesters stormed the U.S. Capitol just one day after Tommy Raskin’s burial and called for the hanging of then-Vice President Mike Pence prompting the senator’s colleagues to fervently pray and text their loved ones, as Raskin recalled while speaking to the Senate back in February Raskin huddled with other lawmakers but said he was devoid of fear.

Raskin in his interview credited Pence as “a hero” that day for refusing Trump’s order to reject Joe Biden’s certification.

Up until that point, Raskin said, he believes Pence “Went along with way too much during the Trump administration. But on that day, he was a constitutional patriot.”

Raskin’s interview comes ahead of the release of his memoir, “Unthinkable,” on Tuesday, which recalls his family’s experience grappling with his son’s suicide and the violent insurrection.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, Wife Say Son Lost Battle With Depression

Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin and his wife Sarah on Monday published a heart-wrenching tribute to their late son, confirming that the 25-year-old took his own life last week after a long battle with depression.

In a note left for his family on New Year’s Eve, the day he died, Thomas Bloom Raskin wrote “Please forgive me. My illness won today,” his parents said in a Medium post.

Known to loved ones as “Tommy,” the second-year student at Harvard Law School was remembered as an animal lover and passionate vegan devoted to helping others.

“Tommy Raskin had a perfect heart, a perfect soul, a riotously outrageous and relentless sense of humor, and a dazzling radiant mind,” his parents wrote.

“On the last hellish brutal day of that godawful miserable year of 2020, when hundreds of thousands of Americans and millions of people all over the world died alone in bed in the darkness from an invisible killer disease ravaging their bodies and minds, we also lost our dear, dear, beloved son, Hannah and Tabitha’s beloved irreplaceable brother, a radiant light in this broken world.”

The Raskins described how their son donated half of his teaching salary “To save people with malaria by purchasing mosquito nets with global charities” and spent the rest on donations in each of his students’ names to other groups targeting global hunger.

The family announced last week that they had created the Tommy Raskin Memorial Fund for People and Animals in their son’s name.

Shaheen Joins Bipartisan Letter To Homeland Security Secretary Requesting Information On Efforts To Protect The United States From Russian Cyber Threats

U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Europe and Regional Security Cooperation, joined a bipartisan letter led by Senators Jacky Rosen and Mike Rounds to the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security requesting information on efforts to protect the United States from Russian cyber and disinformation threats.

The letter references past Russian cyber operations – such as the SolarWinds attack – as evidence of their history of engaging in malicious cyber activities that target the United States.

“The Russian government often engages in malicious cyber activities, including espionage, intellectual property theft, disinformation, propaganda, and cyberattacks, that target the United States. In response, the United States government has imposed sanctions on Russian security personnel and agents for various cyberattacks, including the SolarWinds cyber espionage campaign, and for acts of disinformation and interference, including Russian government-directed attempts to influence U.S. elections,” wrote the Senators.

“Given Russia’s history of disruptive cyber and disinformation activities, we are concerned that the United States may be targeted in retaliation for actions taken to impose costs on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine,” the Senators’ letter continued.

“As we stand with the Ukrainian people, impose crushing sanctions on Vladimir Putin’s regime, and push for additional security assistance to help Ukraine defend itself, we also must work to secure the homeland from retaliatory cyber activities.”

Shaheen has led action in the U.S. Senate in support of Ukraine in response to Vladimir Putin’s belligerence against Ukraine, which also threatens the stability and security of Eastern Europe and NATO allies.

Last month, Shaheen led a successful bipartisan effort with Portman to pass a resolution that conveys a renewed and overwhelmingly bipartisan message from the U.S. Senate in fierce support of Ukraine.

United States Senate

The United States Senate is the upper chamber of the United States Congress, with the House of Representatives being the lower chamber.

The vice president of the United States serves as presiding officer and president of the Senate by virtue of that office, and has a vote only if the senators are equally divided.

First convened in 1789, the Senate of the United States was formed on the example of the ancient Roman Senate.

The United States has had 50 states since 1959, thus the Senate has had 100 senators since 1959.

Like the House of Representatives, the Senate meets in the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. At one end of the chamber of the Senate is a dais from which the presiding officer presides.

New York Times opinion columnist David Leonhardt points out that because small states are disproportionately non-Hispanic European American, African Americans have 75% of their proportionate voting power in the Senate, and Hispanic Americans have just 55%. The approximately four million Americans that have no representation in the Senate are heavily African and Hispanic American.

These include the requirement that the Senate may advise and must consent to some of the president’s government appointments; also the Senate must consent to all treaties with foreign governments; it tries all impeachments, and it elects the vice president in the event no person gets a majority of the electoral votes.

The Senate shares with the House of Representatives responsibility for all lawmaking within the United States.

The Senate leaders also play an important role in appointing members of their party to the Senate committees, which consider and process legislation and exercise general control over government agencies and departments.

U.S. Senate Passes $1.5 Trillion Government Funding Bill With Ukraine Aid

WASHINGTON, March 10 – The U.S. Senate on Thursday approved legislation providing $1.5 trillion to fund the federal government through Sept. 30 and to allocate $13.6 billion to aid Ukraine.

President Joe Biden is expected to sign the bill into law, averting agency shutdowns ahead of the midnight Friday deadline when existing U.S. government funds expire.

Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com”We’re keeping our promises to support Ukraine as they fight for their lives against the evil Vladimir Putin,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said, referring to Russia’s president who has orchestrated a massive attack against its neighbor.

The aid for Ukraine is designed to finance ammunition and other military supplies, as well as humanitarian support.

It also comes as lawmakers jostle to show support of Ukraine in its battle against Russian forces, with Democrats and Republicans saying the Biden administration must do more to help Kyiv.On Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi told reporters that this Ukraine aid package likely would be followed by additional measures to help Kyiv battle Russia and rebuild from the destruction brought by Moscow’s attacks.

Senator Richard Shelby, the senior Republican on the Senate Appropriations Committee, applauded the spending bill for increasing defense spending by nearly $42 billion over last year to total $782 billion.

The Senate also passed a stop-gap bill extending existing federal funding through Tuesday so that congressional clerks have the time they need to process the sprawling “Omnibus” legislation – a chore that could go beyond Friday’s midnight deadline.

United States Senate Elections, 2022

House elections are simply more susceptible to the national electoral environment than Senate elections.

Whatever else is going on, midterm elections most notably operate as referenda on the president of the United States.

Democrats are not defending any Senate seats in states Trump won in 2020.In the 2020 Senate elections, Democrats and Republicans each defended two seats won by the other party’s presidential candidate in 2016.

The following table shows the 2020 presidential election margin of victory in percentage points for each state with a Senate election in 2022.

The 117th Congress has the fewest number of states with split Senate delegations in history, according to Eric Ostermeier of the University of Minnesota: “Prior to the 117th, only one congress has convened with fewer than 10 split-delegation states – the 84th Congress following the Election of 1954. That cycle produced nine states with one Democratic and Republican U.S. Senator.”

Special elections to United States Senate are often required in the event of vacancies.

As of February 2022, 57 special elections to the United States Congress were held during the 113th through 117th Congresses.

Republican Party

The Republican Party quickly became the principal opposition to the dominant Democratic Party and the briefly popular Know Nothing Party.

The Republican Party lost its Senate majority in 2001 when the Senate became split evenly; nevertheless, the Republicans maintained control of the Senate due to the tie-breaking vote of Republican Vice President Dick Cheney.

In response to Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 elections and the subsequent storming of the U.S. Capitol, dozens of Republican former members of the Bush administration made their abandonment of the party public, calling it the “Cult of Trump.” In 2021, the party used Trump’s false assertions of a stolen election as justification to impose new voting restrictions, and to remove Cheney from her House Republican Conference leadership position.

The Republican Party opposes the Affordable Care Act, with no Republican member of Congress voting for it in 2009 and frequent subsequent attempts by Republicans to repeal the legislation.

In the period 1850-1870, the Republican Party was more opposed to immigration than Democrats, in part because the Republican Party relied on the support of anti-Catholic and anti-immigrant parties, such as the Know-Nothings, at the time.

In the decades following the Civil War, the Republican Party grew more supportive of immigration, as it represented manufacturers in the northeast whereas the Democratic Party came to be seen as the party of labor.

There were not highly polarized differences between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party prior to the Roe v. Wade 1973 Supreme Court ruling, but after the Supreme Court ruling, opposition to abortion became an increasingly key national platform for the Republican Party.

Anti-Trump Republicans Lining Up For 2024 Shadow Primary

Republican primary voters are expected to have other options.

Several former Trump loyalists who have emerged as on-again, off-again Trump critics are also eyeing the GOP’s next presidential nomination.

Most in this group have offered Trump far more praise than criticism, leaving the likes of Cheney, Hogan, and Kinzinger as the only consistent Trump antagonists in the 2024 conversation.

The range of prospects suggests an openness within the GOP to move past Trump and his divisive politics, even as many Republican voters suggest they would like to see him run a third time.

10 Republican representatives voted to impeach Trump and seven Republican senators subsequently voted to convict him.

“There is a large and growing lane of Republicans and Americans across the political spectrum who are fed up with toxic politics and want to move in a new direction,” Hogan told the AP. “While I’m focused on finishing my term as governor strong, I’m going to continue to stand up and be a voice for getting our party and our country back on the right track.

Cheney has encouraged 2024 speculation by delivering prominent speeches about the future of the Republican Party in recent months, including a November address in New Hampshire, which typically hosts the first presidential primary election.

Republican Lee Zeldin Says He Can Beat NY Gov. Kathy Hochul

Long Island Rep. Lee Zeldin, the presumptive Republican nominee for governor, released an internal campaign poll Monday claiming he can beat Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul.

The campaign survey shows Zeldin with 45.5 percent of the vote to 44 percent for Hochul, with the rest undecided.

The poll has Biden underwater even in blue New York with only a 43 percent approval rating and 55 percent disapproval.

Hochul had a 44 percent approval rating and 48 percent disapproval.

The poll says 51 percent of voters prefer a Republican candidate to serve as a check and balance to the Democrat-controlled Legislature.

“Over the last year, we have built an unparalleled movement, powered by thousands of volunteers, tens of thousands of grassroots donations and scores of New Yorkers who are waking up and all in to Save Our State,” said Zeldin.

“These numbers aren’t because of luck. They’re thanks to hard work, the right message, strategy and execution, and also taking absolutely nothing for granted. As we continue to get our message out coming off of this month’s Republican and Conservative Party conventions and after airing television and radio ads statewide since the beginning of February, it’s never been more clear that we have the issues on our side, we have the momentum of our side, and there’s a big red wave headed straight for New York in 2022.”.

2022 Money Race: Biden Headlines First In-Person Fundraiser For Democratic Party

The president on Monday night will attend a small, top-dollar, fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee, his first in-person fundraising event for his party since taking over in the White House 14 months ago amid the coronavirus pandemic.

THE 2022 FUNDRAISING FIGHT: BOTH RNC AND DNC HAVE SOMETHING TO BRAG ABOUT. The event, in the nation’s capital, comes as the president appears to be stepping up his fundraising efforts for the DNC ahead of November’s midterm elections, when the Democrats will be defending their razor-thin majorities in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

While the Republican National Committee’s been holding in person fundraisers for months, the DNC’s finance events have been held virtually due to pandemic restrictions.

RNC SPOTLIGHTS ‘MASSIVE INVESTMENTS’ IN GROUND GAME, DATA. As Fox News first reported in January, the RNC hauled in an off-election year record $158.6 million in 2021, slightly edging the DNC. And the RNC out raised its Democratic counterpart in January fundraising, $13 million to $10.2 million.

“The Republican Party will continue to hold Democrats accountable for their rising prices, open border, and soft on crime agenda. Our winning message and our unmatched ground game infrastructure will propel Republicans to victory in 2022,” Vaughn predicted.

National party fundraising is a key barometer of donor and voter enthusiasm ahead of the midterms, and the money raised can be used – among other things – for party staffing in key battlegrounds, grassroots and other get-out-the-vote efforts, campaign ads, and can be transferred the party House and Senate reelection committees.

The Democrats are facing a difficult political climate as well as historical headwinds this year, as the party that wins the White House traditionally suffers setbacks in the ensuing midterms.

Definition, History, & Beliefs

Republican Party, byname Grand Old Party, in the United States, one of the two major political parties, the other being the Democratic Party.

Although Jefferson’s political philosophy is consistent with the outlook of the modern Republican Party, his faction, which soon became known as the Democratic-Republican Party, ironically evolved by the 1830s into the Democratic Party, the modern Republican Party’s chief rival.

Because the historical role played by Lincoln and the Republican Party in the abolition of slavery came to be regarded as their greatest legacy, the Republican Party is sometimes referred to as the party of Lincoln.

After 1860 the Democratic and Republican parties became the major parties in a largely two-party system.

In the country’s second critical election, in 1896, the Republicans won the presidency and control of both houses of Congress, and the Republican Party became the majority party in most states outside the South.

Roosevelt then bolted the Republican Party to form the Progressive Party and ran for president against Taft and the Democratic candidate, Woodrow Wilson.

In 1980 Ronald W. Reagan, the charismatic leader of the Republican Party’s conservative wing, defeated Carter and helped the Republicans to regain control of the Senate, which they held until 1987.

ANA Test: MedlinePlus Medical Test

An ANA test looks for antinuclear antibodies in your blood.

If the test finds antinuclear antibodies in your blood, it may mean you have an autoimmune disorder.

Your health care provider may order an ANA test if you have symptoms of lupus or another autoimmune disorder.

You don’t need any special preparations for an ANA test.

A positive result on an ANA test means that antinuclear antibodies were found in your blood.

If your ANA test results are positive, your health care provider will likely order more tests, especially if you have symptoms of disease.

As many as one-third of healthy adults over the age of 65 may have a positive ANA test result.

Mayo Clinic

An ANA test detects antinuclear antibodies in your blood.

Your doctor is likely to order an ANA test for a suspected autoimmune disease such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis or scleroderma.

While an ANA test can’t confirm a specific diagnosis, it can rule out some diseases.

If the ANA test is positive, your blood can be tested for the presence of particular antinuclear antibodies, some of which are specific to certain diseases.

If your sample is being used only for an ANA test, you can eat and drink normally before the test.

If your blood sample will be used for additional tests, you might need to fast for a time before the test.

Many people with no disease have positive ANA tests – particularly women older than 65.

Anti-Nuclear Antibody

There are many subtypes of ANAs such as anti-Ro antibodies, anti-La antibodies, anti-Sm antibodies, anti-nRNP antibodies, anti-Scl-70 antibodies, anti-dsDNA antibodies, anti-histone antibodies, antibodies to nuclear pore complexes, anti-centromere antibodies and anti-sp100 antibodies.

Extractable nuclear antigens are a group of autoantigens that were originally identified as antibody targets in people with autoimmune disorders.

Anti-double stranded DNA antibodies are highly associated with SLE. They are a very specific marker for the disease, with some studies quoting nearly 100%. Data on sensitivity ranges from 25 to 85%. Anti-dsDNA antibody levels, known as titres, correlate with disease activity in SLE; high levels indicate more active lupus.

Each antibody is present in approximately 25-30% of PBC. The antigens of both antibodies are constituents of the nuclear membrane.

These can be visualised by adding a fluorescent tagged anti-human antibody that binds to the antibodies.

Nuclear dot patterns show between 13 and 25 nuclear dots in interphase cells and are produced by anti-sp100 antibodies.

The Scl-70 antibody was known to be a specific antibody to scleroderma in 1979, however the antigen was not characterised until 1986.

Antinuclear Antibodies Test: Results, Positive Vs. Negative, Causes

An antinuclear antibody test is a blood test that looks for certain kinds of antibodies in your body.

Sometimes people with cancer or people taking certain medications test positive on an ANA test.

Some people with no health conditions test positive on ANA tests.

Your test is positive if it finds antinuclear antibodies in your blood.

A positive test doesn’t mean that you have an autoimmune condition.

Not everyone who has an autoimmune disease will test positive.

About 20% of healthy people will test positive for antinuclear antibodies, even though they don’t have an autoimmune disease.

University Of Rochester Medical Center

Your provider may order other tests depending on your symptoms and your physical exam.

What do my test results mean? Many things may affect your lab test results.

These include the method each lab uses to do the test.

Even if your test results are different from the normal value, you may not have a problem.

A positive test for ANA does not mean you have an autoimmune disease.

The test finds small amounts of these antibodies in up to 15% of healthy people.

What might affect my test results? Many conditions can trigger a positive antinuclear antibody test even without an autoimmune disease.

Cornell University College Of Veterinary Medicine

The bound antibodies can then be detected using a secondary fluorescent-labeled antibody against the species-specific immunoglobulin with fluorescent microscopy.

A positive ANA titer with the associated clinical signs and laboratory findings is diagnostic for SLE. ANA tests are used to support a diagnosis of SLE, but it must be realized that positive results can be seen in a variety of conditions, other than SLE, including infectious and non-immune-mediated inflammatory disease.

Some people use the ANA titer to support an immune-mediated pathogenesis in a variety of other diseases.

Dogs with immune-mediated non-regenerative anemias often have high ANA titers, despite not having SLE. Interpretation guidelines for canine Antinuclear Antibody Test:The ANA test is sensitive, but not specific for SLE. Titer Interpretation Negative A negative result argues strongly against a diagnosis of active SLE, but does not exclude the possibility of other immune-mediated disease.

< or equal to 1:40 Low positive titers often are not specific for SLE. > or equal to 1:80 High titers, if accompanied by appropriate clinical and laboratory findings, are more likely indicative of SLE. Please note that high ANA titers alone are not diagnostics for SLE. High titers can be seen in some animals with infectious or inflammatory disorders and in some normal dogs.

Interpretation guidelines for feline Antinuclear Antibody Test:The ANA test is sensitive, but not specific for SLE. Titer Interpretation Negative A negative result argues strongly against a diagnosis of active SLE, but does not exclude the possibility of other immune-mediated disease.

< or equal to 1:20 Low positive titers often are not specific for SLE. > or equal to 1:40 High titers, if accompanied by appropriate clinical and laboratory findings, are more likely indicative of SLE..

Antinuclear Antibody Test Normal Range & Interpretation

Diagram shows what pathologists see under the microscope in an ANA test.

The ANA test was designed by Dr. George Friou in 1957.

An ANA test is performed by testing the blood in the laboratory.

Fluorescence techniques are frequently used to actually detect the antibodies in the cells, thus ANA testing is sometimes referred to as fluorescent antinuclear antibody test.

The ANA test is a sensitive screening test used to detect autoimmune diseases.

The interpretation or identification of a positive ANA test does not make a diagnosis.

Ultimately, the ANA result must be interpreted in the specific context of an individual patient’s symptoms, underlying medical conditions, and other test results.

Norfolk Southern Railway

Norfolk Southern is the namesake and leading subsidiary of the Norfolk Southern Corporation, based in Norfolk, Virginia.

Norfolk Southern Corporation was incorporated in Virginia on July 23, 1980 and is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol NSC. The primary business function of Norfolk Southern Corporation is the rail transportation of raw materials, intermediate products, and finished goods across the Southeast, East, and Midwest United States.

The system began in 1982 with the creation of the Norfolk Southern Corporation, a holding company for the Southern Railway and Norfolk & Western Railway.

The 3170 is a SD40, the first ordered by the Southern Railway and was retired by Norfolk Southern in 2007.

In March 2013, Norfolk Southern released NS SD60E 6963, which was painted in a special paint scheme for “GORAIL.” In May 2015, Norfolk Southern unveiled another SD60E, number 911 – painted in a red, white, and gold, “Honoring First Responders” paint scheme.

In the first half of 2012, Norfolk Southern painted 10 EMD SD70ACes and 10 GE ES44ACs as special heritage units, each bearing the paint schemes and markings of the various predecessor railroads of Norfolk Southern and Conrail.

In December 2015, Norfolk Southern had concluded their program; however, the 611 continued to run various excursions, hosted by the Virginia Museum of Transportation and the North Carolina Transportation Museum instead of Norfolk Southern across the NS system in Virginia and North Carolina.

Norfolk Southern Railway: Map, Logo, History

The now much smaller Southern and Norfolk & Western, while profitable, realized that without merging themselves the two would be completely dwarfed by this gargantuan new railroad. Informal talks for their own merger began during the late 1970s and formally agreed to create the Norfolk Southern Railway, a division of Norfolk Southern Corporation, in 1982.

On January 1, 1974 the Southern had acquired the original Norfolk Southern Railway, a 623-mile historic system which stretched from Norfolk, Virginia to Charlotte, North Carolina with other lines snaking throughout the Tarheel State’s eastern region.

In 1883 the first use of Norfolk Southern Railroad appeared and it went through a few more name changes until the Great Depression brought about bankruptcy and it became the Norfolk Southern Railway.

The above map gives a family tree of the largest railroads which have made up Norfolk Southern Railway.

Norfolk & Western: One of two key components of Norfolk Southern was the Norfolk & Western, a coal hauling conveyor belt which for many years operated only a few thousand route miles until the late 1950s.

In 1881 the first Norfolk & Western Railroad was formed but fell into bankruptcy and was reorganized as the Norfolk & Western Railway in 1896.

The steamers to participate included Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 #765, Southern 2-8-0 #630, Southern 2-8-2 #4501, and finally Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 #611. The N&W’s famous “J” was the star of the show, restored to operation in 2015 after a year of hard work.

Norfolk Southern Railroad Hiring Conductors

BINGHAMTON, NY – Another mode of transportation responsible for moving large amounts of freight across the continent is actively hiring new workers.

Norfolk Southern Railroad is offering a $5,000 starting bonus as it looks to add 15 to 20 new conductors in the Southern Tier.

Conductors working at the terminals in Conklin and downtown Binghamton are responsible for transferring rail cars from one locomotive to another.

Terminal Superintendent Ryan Martin worked his way up from conductor.

Martin says some conductors ride with the engineer on the train, others stay at the yard while others make short trips to deliver goods to local customers.

Once training is completed, the minimum starting pay is $52,000 a year with access to the Railroad Retirement System.

Conductors can then enter training to become an engineer, who drives the train, and earn closer to 100 grand a year.

Norfolk Southern railroad delivered 13% greater profit in the fourth quarter even though the amount of cargo it transported declined because it was able to raise rates.

Edward Jones analyst Jeff Windau said the supply chain problems and a lack of employees in key areas on the railroad accounted for the decline in volume, but Norfolk Southern continues to work to get more efficient.

The railroad said the average length of its trains has increased 20% since it began to overhaul its operations in late 2019, and that allows it to run with fewer employees and locomotives.

The railroad said its revenue grew 11% to $2.85 billion as it increased rates on shipments and collected additional fuel surcharges.

Chief Marketing Officer Ed Elkins said the railroad is confident that the supply chain problems that have slowed shipments will continue to improve throughout 2022.

For all of 2021, the railroad reported profit of $3.01 billion, or $12.11 per share, as volume grew 5% overall.

Norfolk Southern is one of the nation’s largest railroads, and it operates about 19500 miles of track in 22 Eastern states and the District of Columbia.
