The dramatic increase in season pass sales – up 47% for the 2021-22 ski season – was cited by some local skiers as among the reasons why lines were so long for chairlifts, rental equipment and food.

In the earnings report Vail CEO Kirsten Lynch said that despite the huge increase in season pass sales, total skier visits were up only 2.8% this quarter compared to two years ago, before the pandemic.

The lifts to reach all that terrain? Crested Butte has struggled to keep some lifts operating, skiers say, amid a staffing problem the company blames on the omicron variant even as its labor practices at resorts around the country have come under fire.

While ski areas across the country – and mountain towns in particular – have struggled with staffing this year amid omicron, high housing costs and a national labor shortage, Vail Resorts has faced a cacophony of complaints on social media and in national news stories from outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, alleging everything from long lift lines to unplowed parking lots, limited terrain and frustrated, overworked employees.

Contractor Status Keeps Rideshare Drivers’ Pay Below Minimum Wage, Report Says

Drivers for ridehailing services in Chicago earn less than the $15-per-hour minimum wage and would be paid substantially more if they were classified as employees instead of as independent contractors, according to a study that draws on city government data and research done for Uber and Lyft.

The hourly pay could exceed $21 per hour if drivers were classified as employees, with vehicle expenses paid by the ridehailing companies, the report said.

The findings represent “The most comprehensive picture of the economic conditions facing Uber and Lyft drivers in Chicago because it uses actual data on trips and drivers and fares paid by customers,” said a co-author, Frank Manzo IV, executive director of the Policy Institute.

Uber and Lyft have fought such efforts in several states, sometimes supporting halfway measures that would keep the drivers as contractors but provide minimum levels of pay and benefits.

Higher pay for drivers translates into costlier rides for customers, but the researchers said Uber and Lyft users are relatively affluent and can afford to pay more.

Bruno said drivers aren’t compensated as well as taxi drivers because of city rules requiring cab companies to pay portions of vehicle operating costs.

The report found that only 17% of Uber and Lyft users tip their drivers.

“ESWT might be the next option for that athlete after we have tried all of the standard nonoperative treatments. Normally, when athletes have failed treatment, we have to tell them that they can’t play or that they need to consider more-invasive treatments such as a needle tenotomy, experimental regenerative medicine treatment or surgical debridement, all of which are associated with higher costs, increased risk and longer recovery periods. While often successful, all of those more-invasive therapies require time off and can effectively end an athlete’s season. ESWT thus provides athletes with a really nice intermediate option that, if successful, isn’t season ending.”

In 1944, the various Olin companies were organized under a new corporate parent, Olin Industries, Inc. At the time, Olin Industries and its subsidiary companies ran the St. Louis Arsenal and contributed to the war effort with manufacturing roles at the Badger Army Ammunition and Lake City Army Ammunition Plants.

Olin Industries and Mathieson Chemical merged in 1954 to form the Olin Mathieson Chemical Corporation.

The company became the Olin Corporation in 1969, and began to sell off many of its acquired businesses.

Beere describes the buzzwords commonly used to greenwash as a “Slippery slope” and advises companies to educate their marketers on the ethics of green branding.

Tennessee has just emerged from its last longstanding lawsuit related to the conditions inside our now-closed developmental centers, as the parties recognized that the Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities is providing high-quality supports in the community.

So what is enabling technology? There are many examples, but it can include sensors, mobile technology and remote caregiving supports.

Many are already using enabling technology to support hundreds of people to live independently, while giving them and their families the peace of mind that help is never far away should an emergency arise.

Enabling technology can be a great tool for many people who want to live more independently.

EMILIE HEIDEMANN. Middleton-based home essentials company Spectrum Brands said Friday it has entered into an agreement with New Jersey-based firm Tristar Products to acquire its home appliances and cookware categories for at least $325 million in cash.

In a Friday morning conference call with investors, CEO David Maura said Spectrum Brands plans to combine its purchase of the appliance and cookware categories with its Home and Personal Care segment, and create a new stand-alone company.

Spectrum Brands would then solely encompass its Global Pet Care and Home & Garden businesses.

Maura said during the call that the deal paves the way for further acquisitions “In this space.” The company did not disclose how the transaction impacts Tristar employees who work for the home appliances and cookware categories, nor further details about the new company, but said it will update investors later this year.

“The strategic combination of the Tristar Business with our HPC segment represents an exciting key milestone in our pursuit to create a leading higher-margin and faster-growing company in the global appliances market,” Maura said in a statement Friday.

The purchase comes as Spectrum Brands announced its first-quarter results Friday, and after the company sold its Hardware & Home Improvement Segment to Sweden-based ASSA ABLOY for $4.3 billion in September.

Spectrum Brands reported Friday net income of $8.2 million in its fiscal first quarter, despite continued COVID supply chain disruptions and constraints.
