Koch Industries

In June 1983, after a bitter legal and boardroom battle, the stakes of Frederick R. Koch and William “Bill” Koch were bought out for $1.1 billion and Charles Koch and David Koch became majority owners in the company.

In June 2014, the United Negro College Fund announced a $25 million grant from Koch Industries and the Charles Koch Foundation to go towards merit-based scholarships and general support of historically black colleges and universities.

In November 2017, Koch Disruptive Technologies was established, the corporation’s venture arm, led by Chase Koch, son of Charles Koch.

Koch Ag & Energy Solutions, LLC and its subsidiaries, including Koch Fertilizer, LLC, Koch Agronomic Services, LLC, Koch Energy Services, LLC and Koch Methanol, LLC, globally provide products including fertilizer and other plant nutrients for agricultural turf and ornamental plant markets, as well as other enhanced efficiency products and technology for the energy and chemical markets.

The year 2010 saw the founding of Koch Methanol, LLC, and Koch Agronomic Services, LLC. In October 2010, a plant in which Koch had a 35% stake was nationalized by the Venezuelan government.

In 1995 when the suit was filed, Koch spokesperson Ron Howell stated “We’ve invested over $150 million in leak protection and line rehabilitation over the last five years…we’ve been able to reduce leaks through that time period by nearly 70 percent even as we increased our pipeline mileage by over 25 percent.” Between 1990 and 2000, Koch reduced its crude oil pipeline leaks by more than 90%. In March 1999, Koch Petroleum Group acknowledged that it had negligently discharged hundreds of thousands of gallons of aviation fuel into wetlands from its refinery in Rosemount, Minnesota, and that it had illegally dumped a million gallons of high-ammonia wastewater onto the ground and into the Mississippi River.

The Koch Industries website includes an opinion piece from The Wall Street Journal by Charles Koch, titled “Why Koch Industries is Speaking Out.” The article states: “Because of our activism, we’ve been vilified by various groups. Despite this criticism, we’re determined to keep contributing and standing up for those politicians, like Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who are taking these challenges seriously.”

As Corporations Pull Out Of Russia, Koch Industries Pushes On

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, at least 375 international corporations have suspended their operations in Russia.

Koch Industries, which is run by American billionaire Charles Koch, has three subsidiaries that operate in Russia.

Koch Industries, which is run by American billionaire Charles Koch, has three subsidiaries that operate in Russia: Molex, Guardian Industries and Koch Engineering Solutions.

The subsidiaries have not publicly disclosed plans to pull out of Russia and statements that have been made suggest their operations are ongoing.

Koch Industries’ Molex, an electronic components manufacturer-which doesn’t operate production or distribution centers in Russia but offers its products through a third-party network-said it is “Monitoring the ongoing developments in Eastern Europe” and described the situation as “Fluid” in its latest March 1 letter.

Koch Industries isn’t the only company that has remained in Russia.

Newsweek reached out to Koch Industries for comment but did not hear back before publication.

The REPOWR marketplace, through its innovative shared-asset visibility and management technology, allows users to book underutilized trucks and trailers within minutes – a type of accessibility that will be a boon to supply chain operations.

ADVERTISEMENT.”The amount of underutilized trailers in the supply chain is just mind-blowing and we recognized the opportunity and need to address this problem, which has ramifications across the entire supply chain,” said Patrick Visintainer, CEO of REPOWR. “Our job at REPOWR is to bring visibility and value to this ‘invisible trailer capacity’ so the assets keep generating revenue for owners and borrowers. These are valuable assets that all fleets – but especially smaller fleets – need, so we set out to introduce a network marketplace with book-it-now capabilities.”

REPOWR sees networks as crucial to the successes of future supply chains.

During the peak of the 2020 supply chain crunch, REPOWR’s founding team recognized the insensible amount of waste caused by the lack of visibility and collaboration in the commercial equipment space.

“Traditional methods for sourcing equipment capacity are failing trucking companies, which ripples throughout the supply chain and ultimately affects the economy and consumers,” added Spencer Ware, COO of REPOWR. “As an industry, we’re overlooking at least $45 billion in underutilized trucks and trailers alone. Collaboration unlocks transparency and visibility, so marketplace users are empowered to connect with 3rd parties to seamlessly share latent asset capacity.”

ADVERTISEMENT.”Koch Industries is a global company with significant operations across the entire supply chain, and we appreciate the unique value proposition that REPOWR brings,” said Byron Knight, COO and Managing Director at Koch Disruptive Technologies.

About REPOWR REPOWR is refining the way transportation companies utilize over-the-road equipment by pioneering the world’s first connected, collaborative asset-sharing platform.

7 Companies Owned By The Koch Brothers

Despite fame as political influencers, their primary activities centered around running Koch Industries Inc., of which they owned over 80%..

The company is not really a single business, but rather a conglomerate of different companies under one umbrella.

On June 5, 2018, David Koch retired from all roles related to Koch Industries due to health reasons and he later passed away on Aug. 23, 2019.

The industries under the Koch umbrella are diverse, ranging from companies that deal with energy to spandex.

Koch companies manufacture paper, process minerals, create fertilizers, and refine oil.

The Koch Ag and Energy Solutions company operates three Koch Industries subsidiaries.

The Matador Cattle Company operates three ranches with 12,000 head of cattle while the Koch brothers have their name on a variety of other subsidiary brands.

With the notable exception of our president, probably no individuals in the last decade of politics have attracted as much dismay and fury as the billionaire Koch brothers, Charles and David, who have leveraged control of their family’s gargantuan, Kansas-based Koch Industries to create a political-influence machine of rare scope.

The attention lavished on the Kochs’ influence has tended to overshadow what made that influence possible in the first place: Charles Koch’s eye-opening prowess in business.

While David Koch emerged as a Fifth Avenue philanthropist and bon vivant, it was Charles – calm, modest and analytical – who over the last 50 years transformed an obscure Wichita oil company into a $110 billion colossus.

Leonard does not judge the Kochs; he explains them – their operations and acquisitions, successes and failures, trading strategies, business philosophies and family feuds.

Tackling the biography of a secretive private company like Koch, which has little need to open itself to scrutiny, is a task of herculean difficulty.

Leonard writes: “The profits from Koch’s activities are stunning. Together the two men are worth $120 billion. Their fortune is larger than that of Amazon C.E.O. Jeff Bezos or Microsoft founder Bill Gates. Yet David and Charles Koch did not invent a major new product or revolutionize any industry. The Koch brothers derived their wealth through a patient, long-term strategy of seizing opportunities in complex and often opaque corners of the economic system.”

The story begins in 1967, when the bellicose archconservative who founded Koch Industries, Charles and David’s father, Fred Koch, fell dead in a Utah duck blind.

Georgia-Pacific LLC is an American pulp and paper company based in Atlanta, Georgia, and is one of the world’s largest manufacturers and distributors of tissue, pulp, paper, toilet and paper towel dispensers, packaging, building products and related chemicals.

Georgia-Pacific was founded by Owen Robertson Cheatham on September 22, 1927 in Augusta, Georgia, as the Georgia Hardwood Lumber Co. Over the years it expanded, adding sawmills and plywood plants.

The company acquired its first West Coast facility in 1947 and changed its name to Georgia-Pacific Plywood & Lumber Company in 1948.

Stephen Engelberg of The New York Times wrote that in 1995, Georgia-Pacific persuaded the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee to approve an amendment that derailed a pending E.P.A. investigation of Weyerhauser Company, Louisiana-Pacific Corporation, and Georgia-Pacific, arguing that the E.P.A. was “Unfairly applying present-day standards to decisions made 10 to 15 years ago”, and that the E.P.A. test method overstated the emissions from wood products factories.

Georgia-Pacific’s opponents believed “The measure could allow Georgia-Pacific avoid installing pollution gear at many of its plants.” Engelberg wrote, “Nonetheless, said they would install controls at plants that need them.”

In October of 2007, a Georgia-Pacific lumber processing plant near Brunswick, Georgia was reported to be operating a whites-only bathroom.

In 2009, the EPA awarded Koch subsidiary Georgia-Pacific its SmartWay Excellence award, “An innovative collaboration between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the freight industry designed to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing air pollution,” and specifically commended Georgia-Pacific.

Starbucks Reusable Cup: Company’S Plan To Eliminate Disposables

The coffee giant announced that it will be testing out three different reusable cup strategies at select stores worldwide over the next few years.

WASHINGTON – The current iconic Starbucks to-go cups may only be around for a few more years as the coffee giant looks to phase out most disposable cups by 2025.

In a press release, Starbucks said it will be testing three operating models at select stores in an effort to meet its 2025 goal to “Create a cultural movement towards reusables by giving customers easy access to a personal or Starbucks provided reusable cup for every visit making it convenient to reuse.”

One strategy, called “Borrow a cup,” involves customers paying a deposit for durable cup that they then return when finished.

The “100% reusable” program would get rid of all disposable cups entirely and instead have customers use their own cups or take-home reusable cups for to-go orders.

The final model is the “Personal cup” program where customers are encouraged to bring their own mugs for an order, and Starbucks added that this strategy will become an option at every store in the U.S. and Canada by the end of next year.

Starbucks currently offers a 10 cents discount for customers who bring their own mug at participating locations, but the company said it plans to expand this discount to 50 cents at most locations once the “Personal cup” program is fully rolled out.

Post Idea #7: Optical transistor

Related Articles – Summarized

Optical Transistor

An optical transistor, also known as an optical switch or a light valve, is a device that switches or amplifies optical signals.

Light occurring on an optical transistor’s input changes the intensity of light emitted from the transistor’s output while output power is supplied by an additional optical source.

Since the input signal intensity may be weaker than that of the source, an optical transistor amplifies the optical signal.

Optical transistors provide a means to control light using only light and has applications in optical computing and fiber-optic communication networks.

The most commonly argued case for optical logic is that optical transistor switching times can be much faster than in conventional electronic transistors.

This loss is avoided in optical communication where only enough energy to switch an optical transistor at the receiving end must be transmitted down a line.

Besides the potential advantages of higher speed, lower power consumption and high compatibility with optical communication systems, optical transistors must satisfy a set of benchmarks before they can compete with electronics.

What Is An Optical Transistor?

Author: Dr. Rüdiger Paschotta, RP Photonics AG. Abstract: A recent paper reported an optical transistor, but it is questionable whether that term is appropriate here.

“A single-molecule optical transistor”, Nature 460, 76.

Coming back to the optical transistor, this is usually considered important because it would allow to construct sophisticated optical circuits.

So we see that amplification will be important just as it is for the electronic transistor.

In my opinion one should not call this device an optical transistor.

Just look at the many reports describing that experiment as a milestone on the way to optical computing, apparently not recognizing that such kind of optical gates could not be combined arbitrarily because they lack amplification.

David A. B. Miller has published the paper “Are optical transistors the logical next step?” in Nature Photonics 4, 3.

Commentary Are optical transistors the logical next step? David A. B. Miller A transistor that operates with photons rather than electrons is often heralded as the next step in information processing, but optical technology must first prove itself to be a viable solution in many different respects.

Future devices may require operational energies as small as tens of attojoules9 – these are demanding targets for an optical device to reach, particularly because they represent the total energy for logic operation, not just the input signal energy.

Much early work was based on optical bistability 10 using nonlinear optical phenomena, mostly in resonators.

In justifying higher optical logic energies, it is common to argue that the energy cost of converting data from the optical to electronic domain and back is inherently high14.

The arguments for optical wiring are understood even down to chip-level6, but chip-scale optical interconnect technology is still in its infancy.

3 commentary The first major benefit of optical connections is the much higher densities of information possible in relatively long connections; this density improvement has already led to optical interconnects at the cabinet-to-cabinet level.

The electronic transistor and the logic gates based on it have qualitative features that are crucial for systems of any complexity, but very few optical transistors or logic devices possess them3.

Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express Seeks To Unify Future Semiconductor Packages

The second is that smaller die areas increase the overall yield as defects and mistakes in the wafer are less likely to occur in a die.

Combining the dies of multiple manufacturers could allow for entirely custom packages whose construction is entirely automated.

A design split into different dies needs to use a communication method that is shared across all dies to ensure the highest bandwidth, lowest latency, and easiest connection possible.

Having four dies from different manufacturers, all having different communication protocols, increases the complexity of an SoP and wastes semiconductor space as each bus protocol would need its own dedicated circuitry.

Recognising the potential challenges of a future where semiconductor manufacturers will most likely make their own inter-chip communication standards, some of the industry’s finest manufacturers have come together to agree upon a future standard for chip communication.

Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express is a proposed interconnection standard that will describe both the physical and the protocol layer, which will be heavily based on CXL and PCIe as these are already widely used established bus protocols that are effective at low-latency high-bandwidth communication.

The use of SoP will also reduce the cost of design as smaller dies with higher yields will undoubtedly be cheaper to produce, which will usher in a new era of semiconductor usage.

Novel Twist On Ferroelectricity

A team of researchers at the University of Manchester’s National Graphene Institute and the National Physical Laboratory, both in the UK, has demonstrated that slightly twisted 2D transition metal dichalcogenides can display room-temperature ferroelectricity.

Until recently, out-of-plane switchable ferroelectricity at room temperature had only been achieved in films thicker than 3nm. Since the isolation of graphene in 2004, researchers across academia have studied a variety of new two-dimensional materials with a wide range of exciting properties.

These atomically thin 2D crystals can be stacked on top of one another to create so-called heterostructures – artificial materials with tailored functions – and twisting these crystal layers with respect to each other can introduce even more exciting properties, including superconductivity.

Recently, a team of researchers from NGI, in collaboration with NPL, demonstrated that below a twist angle of 2°, atomic lattices physically reconstruct to form regions of perfectly stacked bilayers separated by boundaries of locally accumulated strain.

In the latest work, reported in a paper in Nature Nanotechnology, the team demonstrated that the domain structure created with low-angle twisting hosts interfacial ferroelectricity in bilayer TMDs. Kelvin probe force microscopy revealed that neighbouring domains are oppositely polarized and electrical transport measurements demonstrated reliable ferroelectric switching at room temperature.

“It’s very exciting that we can demonstrate that this simple tool of twisting can engineer new properties in 2D crystals,” said lead author Astrid Weston from NGI. “With the wide variety of 2D crystals to choose from, it provides us with almost unlimited scope to create perfectly tailored artificial materials.”

“Being able to observe the pattern and behaviour of ferroelectric domains in structures that have nanometer thickness with KPFM and SEM was very exciting,” said co-author Eli Castanon from NPL. “The advancement of characterization techniques together with the extensive possibilities for the formation of novel heterostructures of 2D materials paves the way to achieve new capabilities at the nanoscale for many industries.”

NGI Uses Twist To Engineer 2D Semiconductors

A team of researchers at The University of Manchester’s National Graphene Institute and the National Physical Laboratory has demonstrated that slightly twisted 2D transition metal dichalcogenides display room-temperature ferroelectricity.

Since the isolation of graphene in 2004, researchers across academia have studied a variety of new 2D materials with a wide range of exciting properties.

These atomically thin 2D crystals can be stacked on top of one another to create so-called heterostructures – artificial materials with tailored functions.

More recently, a team of researchers from NGI, in collaboration with NPL, demonstrated that below a twist angle of 2o, atomic lattices physically reconstruct to form regions of perfectly stacked bilayers separated by boundaries of locally accumulated strain.

In the work, published in Nature Nanotechnology, the team demonstrated that the domain structure created with low-angle twisting hosts interfacial ferroelectricity in bilayer TMDs. Kelvin probe force microscopy revealed that neighbouring domains are oppositely polarised and electrical transport measurements demonstrated reliable ferroelectric switching at room temperature.

MGM was formed by Marcus Loew by combining Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures, and Louis B. Mayer Pictures into a single company.

LeRoy talked Mayer into purchasing the rights to make a film version of the popular book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which MGM did on June 3, 1938, from Sam Goldwyn for $75,000.

In August 1951, Mayer was fired by MGM’s East Coast executives and was replaced by Schary.

By 1998, MGM had started a specialty film unit using The Samuel Goldwyn Company under the Goldwyn Films name.

Samuel Goldwyn Jr. sued Metromedia over salary and damages when he worked at Goldwyn Company under Metromedia and sued MGM over the use of the Goldwyn name claiming trademark infringement and unfair competition.

MGM and Metromedia settled on January 10, 1999, with MGM’s Goldwyn Films changing its name to G2 Films.

Patient-Derived Xenograft Models: Characteristics And Points To Consider For The Process Of Establishment

Tumor research has largely relied on xenograft models created by the engraftment of cultured cell lines derived from tumor tissues into immunodeficient mice for in vivo studies.

Like in vitro models, such models retain the ability of tumor cells to continuously proliferate, so they have been used to predict the clinical relevance of studies on proliferating cells.

These models are composed of a limited population of tumor cells, which include only those tumor cells that are able to adapt to culture conditions, and thus they do not reflect the diversity and heterogeneity of tumors.

Recently, research focus has been directed towards patient-derived xenograft models created by directly engrafting tumor tissues, which have not been cultured in vitro, into immunodeficient mice.

PDX models reflect the diversity and heterogeneity of tumors, and the evidence they provide can be verified in the patient tissues from which they were derived originally.

Based on the evidence obtained from our research experience, this review describes the characteristics of PDX models for acting as tumor models, and elucidates the points to consider when attempting to establish these models.

Keywords: EBV-related lymphoproliferative disorder; NOG mouse; engrafting tumor tissue; immunodeficient mouse; patient derived xenograft model.

Patient Derived Xenograft

Patient derived xenografts are models of cancer where the tissue or cells from a patient’s tumor are implanted into an immunodeficient or humanized mouse.

Unlike creating xenograft mouse models using existing cancer cell lines, there are no intermediate in vitro processing steps before implanting tumor fragments into a murine host to create a PDX. The tumor fragments are either implanted heterotopically or orthotopically into an immunodeficient mouse.

Cancer cell lines are originally derived from patient tumors, but acquire the ability to proliferate within in vitro cell cultures.

When implanted into immunodeficient mice, cell lines do not easily develop tumors and the result of any successfully grown tumor is a genetically divergent tumor unlike the heterogeneous patient tumor.

Since PDX can be passaged without in vitro processing steps, PDX models allow the propagation and expansion of patient tumors without significant genetic transformation of tumor cells over multiple murine generations.

Within PDX models, patient tumor samples grow in physiologically-relevant tumor microenvironments that mimic the oxygen, nutrient, and hormone levels that are found in the patient’s primary tumor site.

Implanted tumor tissue maintains the genetic and epigenetic abnormalities found in the patient and the xenograft tissue can be excised from the patient to include the surrounding human stroma.

Post Idea #10: Xenotransplantation

Related Articles – Summarized

Xenotransplantation is any procedure that involves the transplantation, implantation or infusion into a human recipient of either live cells, tissues, or organs from a nonhuman animal source, or human body fluids, cells, tissues or organs that have had ex vivo contact with live nonhuman animal cells, tissues or organs.

The development of xenotransplantation is, in part, driven by the fact that the demand for human organs for clinical transplantation far exceeds the supply.

Currently ten patients die each day in the United States while on the waiting list to receive lifesaving vital organ transplants.

Recent evidence has suggested that transplantation of cells and tissues may be therapeutic for certain diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders and diabetes, where, again human materials are not usually available.

Although the potential benefits are considerable, the use of xenotransplantation raises concerns regarding the potential infection of recipients with both recognized and unrecognized infectious agents and the possible subsequent transmission to their close contacts and into the general human population.

Of public health concern is the potential for cross-species infection by retroviruses, which may be latent and lead to disease years after infection.

New infectious agents may not be readily identifiable with current techniques.

ScienceDirect Topics

Multiple barriers exist to the broad clinical application of xenotransplantation, including immunologically mediated graft rejection of xenogeneic tissues, metabolic or molecular incompatibilities between donor organs and humans, ethical concerns, and the risk of infections that may be transmitted from donor species to humans.

In the early nineteenth century, G. Voronoff proposed transplanting ape testicle slices to rejuvenate human males and applied this technique in more than 2000 human patients.

Virologists were very reluctant to use superior primates as donors for xenotransplant tissue in humans due to possible parallelism with HIV retrovirus infection, which may have been transmitted from apes to humans.

As a source of organs for humans, the pig has considerable advantages over any other species, but the major problem of rapid hyperacute rejection after grafting of vascularized pig organs remained and became the problem to solve.

Although the human data for primarily vascularized xenografts were not very impressive, the experimental data convinced scientists that using organs from transgenic pigs to transplant humans was possible and may be used in the very near future.

Further trials of xenotransplantation involving chimpanzees and baboons have been avoided because of the anthropometric qualities of the donor and the concerns that these animals pose a high risk for zoonotic infections that might enter the human population, given the evidence of human diseases that originated from nonhuman primates such as HIV-1 and HIV-2.116.It has been hoped that lower mammalian donors such as pigs may be suitable.

Subsequently, human tumor cell lines including breast cancer, leukemia, sarcoma have been grown in vivo within zebrafish embryos following xenotransplantation [44,166-169]. In contrast to mouse xenografts, immunosuppression is not necessary early in development to prevent rejection as zebrafish embryos lack a fully functional immune system until 28 days post-fertilization[170-172]. An initial hurdle in the development of the zebrafish xenograft platform was the difference in temperature requirement for the maintenance of human cells compared with zebrafish embryos, since the latter are usually maintained at 28°C while human cells are usually incubated at 37°C, reflecting human body temperature.

Xenotransplantation: Risks, Clinical Potential, And Future Prospects

Although considerable advances have been made in the field of cardiac xenotransplantation since its first clinical application by Hardy in 1964, it remains uncertain whether xenotransplantation as destination therapy can be successfully applied to humans.

Can one ever hope to determine if or when the clinical application of xenotransplantation is justified? The assessment of any experimental therapy, as Fox and Swazey have suggested, should encourage the investigator to address three critical questions: 1) in the laboratory, what defines “Success” sufficient to warrant advancement to the clinical arena? 2) under what clinical conditions should this advancement proceed? and 3) in the clinical arena, what defines “Success” sufficient to warrant further evaluation? Providing answers to this threefold inquiry requires a reliance upon defined “Success,” itself an appraisal of judgment that can only confidently be made in retrospect.

Despite the fact that, at present, it appears unlikely that sufficient “Success” has been achieved in the laboratory regarding xenotransplantation between distantly related species to warrant advancement to the clinical arena, these investigators were able to obtain approval from their hospital’s ethics committee and institutional review board to proceed with the clinical trial.

Finally, the clinical “Success” of xenotransplantation might also be considered any graft survival, and the goal of xenotransplantation to strive for extended graft survival.

“Concerns most commonly voiced with respect to the clinical application of xenotransplantation pertain to a larger ethical controversy regarding human experimentation. Reemtsma, in a related comment concerning the Baby Fae case, suggested the following:”There is a widespread misperception that medical treatments and surgical procedures are easily classified as either experimental or accepted.

What is the goal of the clinical application of xenotransplantation? The need for donor organs irrefutably outweighs the resources available, and mechanical devices and xenotransplantation have emerged as the two most promising alternatives to allograft cardiac replacement.

The use of xenografts solely as bridges to allotransplantation will not increase the donor pool, and successful permanent xenotransplantation must itself be seen as the target for future clinical investigations.

The first organs taken from genetically engineered pigs have been put into people and the recipient of the first pig heart managed to survive for two months.

If the body unleashes a horrendous assault on the foreign organ – holes will be ripped in every cell in the pig tissue and the organ will clot from the inside out.

The recent kidney and heart transplants have taken organs from the specially designed “10-gene pig”.

The pair of pig kidneys were transplanted into the brain-dead body of Jim Parsons in September 2021.He’d wanted to be an organ donor when he died and when his kidneys were donated, pig kidneys were put in their place with permission from his family.

No signs of organ rejection have been reported, but if detailed analysis of the heart shows signs of the immune system attacking it, the 10-gene pig may need further modifications to make its organs suitable for the human body.

Pig hearts do not have to be as good as a human heart to still save huge numbers of lives, according to Prof John Wallwork, one of the UK’s most eminent transplant surgeons.

Prof Wallwork, who conducted the world’s first heart-lung-liver transplant and was an early pioneer of xenotransplantation, says it’s better to give 1,000 people a 70% chance of survival with a pig heart than 100 people an 85% chance with a human heart.

Xenotransplantation: What Is This ‘Landmark’ Surgery All About And What Progress Has Been Made So Far

The University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore early this year successfully executed a landmark surgery that was a step towards organ transplantation and the struggle of finding organ donors forever.

57-year-old David Bennett’s ailing heart was replaced with the genetically altered heart of a pig.

The procedure called xenotransplantation involves “Any procedure that involves the transplantation, implantation or infusion into a human recipient of either live cells, tissues, or organs from a nonhuman animal source, or human body fluids, cells, tissues or organs that have had ex vivo contact with live nonhuman animal cells, tissues or organs”.

The first Xenotransplantation was tried in the 1980s when the human heart of a newborn with a congenital heart defect was replaced by that of a baboon’s heart.

To preempt the chances of molecular incompatibility between pigs and humans leading to immune complications, genetic engineering tweaks the genome of the pig to that the human immune system does not recognize that it is that of a pig, increasing chances of the surgery being successful.

In the latest case, the donor pig’s hearts went through 10 genetic modifications, and four pig gens were replaced by six human genes.

The pig’s heart was removed from the pig’s body and placed in a special machine to preserve it until Bennett’s surgery.

What Is Xenotransplantation? Experts Say Process Could Increase Life Expectancy In Humans

US Federal Drugs Association describes Xenotransplantation as any procedure that involves transplantation, implantation or infusion of live cells, tissues, and organs from a non-human animal source or organs that have had ex-vivo contact with live non-human animal cells, tissues or organs.

According to the American federal agency, the main reason behind xenotransplantation is the fact that demand of human organ overhauls its supply.

The human body is bound to reject any foreign organ, tissue or cell and therefore, acceptability is the biggest challenge in the process.

If successful, xenotransplantation can yield numerous benefits for mankind starting from reduction in organ trade to bolstering average life span of the entire species.

Speaking to Republic Media Network, Senior Pulmonologist Dr Parthiv Sanghvi, said that the process could increase the longevity of human life to 80 or 90 years.

“During the time of India’s independence, average life expectancy of human life was 35 years. Today it is 69 years. It has only been possible due to advances in medicine. If Xenotransplantation becomes reality, then human life expectancy in India could be increased to 80-90 years,” Dr Sanghvi said.

Dr Manoj Goel, Director of Pulmonology at Fortis Memorial Research Institute opined that one of the main reasons behind the need to advance xenotransplantation is the need for human organs, “We need more organs. The list of recipients is very long”, he said.

Guard Rail / Handrail: Structural Design

The NAAMM the 2006 IBC require that handrails, guardrails, and their supports be designed for 50 lb per linear foot, applied in any direction at the top of the top rail, and a concentrated load of 200 lb applied in any direction at any location along the top of the top rail.

The concentrated loading represents the force exerted by a single individual leaning upon or over the rail or a person or object being hurled against the rail.

The maximum bending moment on a rail occurs either under a concentrated load when the load is applied at mid span or under a uniform load due to a long span between supports.

The required Flexural Strength in for horizontal rail is governed by whichever loading returns the biggest bending moment on each rail component.

Since the strength of the railing system is a function of post spacing, the design of railing can be generalized and expressed in terms of the maximum permissible post spacing.

With wrong choice of railing sections, a railing design may end up in a very strong post with a very weak horizontal rail; or a very strong horizontal rail with a very weak post.

A good choice or a right combination of post and horizontal rail sections will yield a design that is both strong and economically practical.

Guard Rail

Guard rail, guardrails, or protective guarding, in general, are a boundary feature and may be a means to prevent or deter access to dangerous or off-limits areas while allowing light and visibility in a greater way than a fence.

Although the OSHA standard calls for a guardrail or guardrail system to protect workers on elevated work areas, current industry terminology would refer to that type of safety system as a handrail system or safety rail system.

While a single rail safety guardrail located some 15 inches above floor level may be sufficient to control vehicle traffic, it could present a trip hazard to pedestrians since it is not as noticeable as a double or triple guardrail system where the top rail is some 40 inches above the floor level.

Steel guardrail system manufacturers test their systems to withstand impacts from a 10,000-pound load moving at four miles per hour, whereas manufacturers of polymer safety guardrail systems rate and test their products at varying impact levels due to variation in guardrail product systems they offer, which can range from simple low impact energy pedestrian guardrail systems to high impact energy industrial traffic guardrail systems.

Guardrail functions as a system with the guardrail, posts, connection of the rail to the posts and to each other, and the end anchors all playing an integral role in how the guardrail will function upon impact.

A run of guardrail must be anchored at each terminating end either by transitioning the rail into a fixed anchor such as a bridge rail or with an end terminal or end anchor placed in the ground or within an embankment.

Guardrail must be installed so that it is not so rigid that the rail will fail upon impact or the posts will snap off at the point where they are embedded within the ground.

What Is A Solar Inverter? Detailed Explanation For Beginners

Are you well aware of how the different components of a solar energy system work? Solar systems come with a solar inverter, PV panels, battery, and a rack to keep all the parts in place.

A solar inverter is a precious component of the solar energy system.

Solar Inverter: What’s It? A solar inverter does a great job of absorbing variable DC output from the panels and converts this current into a 120 or 240-volt AC output.

It is difficult to determine the precise cost of an inverter because many solar firms include the expense of the inverter in the overall cost of a solar power system.

Primarily, since several solar firms incorporate the expense of the inverter in the overall expense of the solar power system, your buying options would be limited to third-party retailers.

Essentially, your solar agreement will govern how you pay for your solar system.

In a nutshell, a solar inverter functions as an intermediary, and without it, the energy accumulated by solar panels would be useless.

Solar Inverter

A solar inverter or PV inverter, is a type of electrical converter which converts the variable direct current output of a photovoltaic solar panel into a utility frequency alternating current that can be fed into a commercial electrical grid or used by a local, off-grid electrical network.

Stand-alone inverters, used in isolated systems where the inverter draws its DC energy from batteries charged by photovoltaic arrays.

Solar inverters use maximum power point tracking to get the maximum possible power from the PV array.

Solar micro-inverter is an inverter designed to operate with a single PV module.

A 2011 study at Appalachian State University reports that individual integrated inverter setup yielded about 20% more power in unshaded conditions and 27% more power in shaded conditions compared to string connected setup using one inverter.

The key role of the grid-interactive or synchronous inverters or simply the grid-tie inverter is to synchronize the phase, voltage, and frequency of the power line with that of the grid.

Advanced solar pumping inverters convert DC voltage from the solar array into AC voltage to drive submersible pumps directly without the need for batteries or other energy storage devices.

The renewal of signalling system will become more and more important in Europe in the next few years, as much of the existing infrastructure of subway systems in major cities is more than 45 years old.

Because of the great heterogeneity of mass transit systems and despite the efforts of some selected operators of large subway systems, it is not likely that this situation will change in the foreseeable future.

Communications-Based Train Control

Communications-Based Train Control is a railway signaling system that makes use of the telecommunications between the train and track equipment for the traffic management and infrastructure control.

A CBTC system is a “Continuous, automatic train control system utilizing high-resolution train location determination, independent of track circuits; continuous, high-capacity, bidirectional train-to-wayside data communications; and trainborne and wayside processors capable of implementing Automatic Train Protection functions, as well as optional Automatic Train Operation and Automatic Train Supervision functions.”, as defined in theIEEE 1474 standard.

The trains continuously receive information regarding the distance to the preceding train and are then able to adjust their safety distance accordingly.

From the signalling system perspective, the first figure shows the total occupancy of the leading train by including the whole blocks which the train is located on.

In a moving block system as shown in the second figure, the train position and its braking curve is continuously calculated by the trains, and then communicated via radio to the wayside equipment.

Train to wayside communication subsystem, currently based on radio links.

It is responsible for the automatic control of the traction and braking effort in order to keep the train under the threshold established by the ATP subsystem.

Communications-Based Train Control

Communications-based train control is a railway signaling system that makes use of telecommunications between the train and track equipment for traffic management and infrastructure control.

A CBTC system is a “Continuous, automatic train control system utilizing high-resolution train location determination, independent from track circuits; continuous, high-capacity, bidirectional train-to-wayside data communications; and trainborne and wayside processors capable of implementing automatic train protection functions, as well as optional automatic train operation and automatic train supervision functions,” as defined in the IEEE 1474 standard.

These systems, which were also referred to as transmission-based train control, made use of inductive loop transmission techniques for track to train communication, introducing an alternative to track circuit based communication.

From the signalling system perspective, the first figure shows the total occupancy of the leading train by including the whole blocks which the train is located on.

End of Movement is the location to which the train is permitted to proceed according to an MA. When transmitting a MA, it is the end of the last section given in the MA. It is important to mention that the occupancy calculated in these systems must include a safety margin for location uncertainty added to the length of the train.

The evolution of the technology and the experience gained in operation over the last 30 years means that modern CBTC systems are more reliable and less prone to failure than older train control systems.

The primary risk of an electronic train control system is that if the communications link between any of the trains is disrupted then all or part of the system might have to enter a failsafe state until the problem is remedied.

Communications-Based Train Control – Land Transport Guru

Communications-based train control is a moving block type railway signalling system that relies on continuous telecommunications between the train and trackside equipment for train management and control.

The CBTC system on a train communicates real-time location and speed data with the trackside computers, which establish a safety envelope in which a train is allowed to operate.

Paired with Wayside Radio Units, which are trackside antennas located near each train station, the wayside controllers process the data from trains and calculates the Limit of Movement Authority for each train.

The CBTC is also integrated with train protection systems such as Automatic Train Protection, Automatic Train Operation and Automatic Train Supervision.

The CBTC system can support Unattended Train Operation, which is used on the North East Line, Circle Line and Downtown Line and do not require an operator on board, although rail operators SBS Transit and SMRT Trains elect to keep a train attendant onboard in the event of a disruption.

Previously on the North South Line and East West Line, trains on fixed-block signalling use Semi-automatic Train Operation, with the driver closing the doors at every station and operating the train manually during a disruption.

In the wake of the train collision incident on the EWL attributed to a CBTC software fault, the LTA worked with signalling system providers to set up simulation facilities at selected train depots.

Moderation System

Also known as unilateral moderation, this kind of moderation system is often seen on Internet forums.

Commercial Content Moderation is a term coined by Sarah T. Roberts to describe the practice of “Monitoring and vetting user-generated content for social media platforms of all types, in order to ensure that the content complies with legal and regulatory exigencies, site/community guidelines, user agreements, and that it falls within norms of taste and acceptability for that site and its cultural context.”

Distributed moderation comes in two types: user moderation and spontaneous moderation.

Strictly speaking, wikis such as Wikipedia are the ultimate in user moderation, but in the context of Internet forums, the definitive example of a user moderation system is Slashdot.

User moderation can also be characterized by reactive moderation.

Spontaneous moderation is what occurs when no official moderation scheme exists.

Because spontaneous moderation exists, no system that allows users to submit their own content can ever go completely without any kind of moderation.

If your business relies on user-generated content, it’s extremely important to proactively detect abuse and toxic content.

Content moderation is a key component for social communities, forums, dating & chat apps, multiplayer games, and marketplaces.

While difficult to build, AI is far more effective in detecting toxic content, and it becomes smarter as you continue using it.

It’s helping companies of all sizes take a proactive approach to user-generated content, with one API and a moderation console.

Step 5: Calculate Engineering hoursSo far, we have created an extremely lean ML content moderation system by cutting costs wherever possible.

If you’re looking to save time & money on content moderation ML, consider a vendor like Sentropy, which makes the world’s most accurate content moderation tools.

Their context-aware ML flags inappropriate messages in real-time – allowing you to swiftly identify toxic users and take action on inappropriate content.

Understanding Moderation – Skills Universe

These assessment criteria must be considered and used in the moderation process.

Moderation of assessments involving a variety of assessment techniques, such as work samples, simulations, role-plays, written items, oral, portfolios and projects.

Moderation activities include pre-assessment interactions with assessors, interactions during assessment and post-assessment interactions.

Moderation within the context of the NQF is a means for professional interaction with, and improvement of practitioners, to continuously improve the quality of assessment.

Internal moderation ensures assessments conducted by a single learning provider, are consistent, accurate and well designed.

Establish systems to standardise assessment, including the plans for internal moderation.

The moderators effectiveness will depend to a large extent on his/her ability to ensure compliance by the assessor with the assessment criteria as contained in the unit standard together with a willingness to follow assessment and moderation policies and procedures.

Microsoft Tech Community

The message marked for moderation is intercepted in the transport pipeline and is routed to the arbitration mailbox used for processing moderation emails.

The Approval Processing Agent reads the approval status on the message stored in the arbitration mailbox, and then processes the message depending on the moderator’s decision.

If the moderator has approved the message, the Approval Processing Agent resubmits the message to the submission queue, and the message is delivered to recipient(s).

If the moderator has rejected the message, the Approval Processing Agent notifies the sender that the message was rejected.

If one of the moderators approves the email, the moderation approval email goes into the sent items of the moderator who approved the email and at the same time, the message will be moved to the deleted items folder of the second moderator to avoid any conflict in action taken.

Moderated messages are not delivered to moderator and sender receives a NDR message.

For DGs with more than 5000 recipients, configuring delivery management or message approval options is must else sender will receive NDR similar to: rejected with error: “550 5.7.125 RESOLVER.GRP.Blocked.NeedsSenderRestrictions; DL expansion needs sender restrictions or message approval configured.”

6 Types Of Content Moderation You Need To Know About

There are 6 common types of moderation which, as a Community Manager or Moderator, you need to consider when deciding how to maintain some sense of order within your community.

In an environment where active moderation must take place, post-moderation is a better alternative to pre-moderation from a user experience perspective, as all content is displayed on the site immediately after submission, but replicated in a queue for a moderator to pass or remove afterwards.

Reactive moderation is defined by relying on your community members to flag up content that is either in breach of your House Rules, or that the members deem to be undesirable.

The members themselves essentially become responsible for reporting content that they feel are inappropriate as they encounter this content on the site or community platform.

The main advantage of this method of moderation is that it can scale with your community growth without putting extra strain on your moderation resource or cost, as well as theoretically avoiding responsibility for defamatory or illegal content uploaded by the users of your website, as long as your process for removing content upon notification within an acceptable timeframe is in place.

If your company is particularly concerned about how their brand is viewed, you might not be willing to take the risk that some undesirable content will be visible on your site for any period of time, as you are relying on your members to see and bother reporting this content.

Distributed moderation is still a somewhat rare type of user generated content moderation method.

(PDF) Resistance Of Nanostructured Environmental Barrier Coatings To The Movement Of Molten Salts

Barrier coatings to molten salts and high-temperature boiler flue.

A surface treatment of blasting with corundum was applied to all substrates in order to generate a noticeable roughness, then apply a bond coat of Ni-Al-Mo for the technique FS and a bond coat of NiCrAlCo-Y2O3 for the technique APS and SPS. The coatings were characterized to know and correlate the morphology of the cross section and surface, elemental composition of the zones of interest, phases, thickness, porosity, microhardness, vibrational groups, corrosion resistance and wear resistance.

More recently, it has been observed that thermalsprayed yttria-stabilized zirconia-based coatings could provide successful resistance to steel surfaces of the super-heater tubes and recovery boilers against the molten salt corrosive attack at elevated temperatures reported on a detailed review of the utilization of YSZ-based coatings for protection of the thermal barrier coatings against hot corrosive attack.

YSZ coatings along with a MCrAlY bond coat have been used to protect other components, such as Kraft recovery boilers and superheater tubes used in the pulp and paper industry, where superheater tubes and boilers are severely corroded in the presence of molten salts and sulfidic gases.

This chapter explores and describes the various types of coating materials that are used as environmental barrier coatings and the harsh environmental conditions against which these coatings provide protection.

Compared with the conventional zirconia coating, the nanostructured coating is denser and has finer and less porous structure and fewer microcracks with higher thermal shock resistance and isothermal oxidation resistance.

In the present work, yttria-stabilized zirconia coatings of 300 μm were applied over type 316L SS with a metallic bond coating of 50 μm by an optimized plasma spray process, and were assessed for the corrosion behaviour in molten LiCl-KCl medium at 873 K for periods of 5 h, 100 h, 250 h and 500 h. The as-coated and tested samples were examined by optical microscopy and SEM for homogeneity, penetration of molten salt through coating and corrosion of type 316L SS substrate.

What Is A User Interface?

As a result, companies have found that the best way to compete on the web is to prioritize building an attractive and efficient user interface that optimizes the user experience.

What is user interface? The user interface is the point at which human users interact with a computer, website or application.

Touch user interface: User interface through haptics or touch.

Why is user interface important? User interface is important to meet user expectations and support the effective functionality of your site.

A well-executed user interface facilitates effective interaction between the user and the program, app or machine through contrasting visuals, clean design and responsiveness.

What is the difference between user interface and user experience? User interface and user experience are related and equally important to the execution of a project, but the specifics differ.

Once the interface is programmed to be useful, the prototype is sent to a user interface designer, where the processes are made visually appealing.

User Interface Design is the creation of graphics, illustrations, and use of photographic artwork and typography to enhance the display and layout of a digital product within its various device views.

Significance of User Interface:A good User Interface focuses on making user’s interactions simple and efficient.

User would appreciate a website with intuitive user interface that leads them towards their task in most engaging way.

User Interface design focuses on thinking of a user, what they might need to do when they visit website and ensure that the interface has elements that are easy to access and understand.

Being a UI designer, one need to understand the goals, skills, preferences and tendencies of the user to make a better interface.

As the User Interface can make or break the incoming users, it’s important to take care of below points when designing a UI:.Keep the interface simple: Clear and simple interface are best.

Anticipate: Make the user to work less by having pre-chosen fields, reduce the burden on the user, anticipate the goals of the users who come to your site.

User Interface Design Basics

User Interface Design focuses on anticipating what users might need to do and ensuring that the interface has elements that are easy to access, understand, and use to facilitate those actions.

Users have become familiar with interface elements acting in a certain way, so try to be consistent and predictable in your choices and their layout.

There are times when multiple elements might be appropriate for displaying content.

Sometimes elements that can help save you space, put more of a burden on the user mentally by forcing them to guess what is within the dropdown or what the element might be.

The best interfaces are almost invisible to the user.

Once a user learns how to do something, they should be able to transfer that skill to other parts of the site.

The use of various UI elements to communicate status and, if necessary, next steps can reduce frustration for your user.

What Is A User Interface & What Are The Key Elements?

User interface design has grown substantially over the past few years, and has blossomed into one of the most creative, innovative and exciting fields in tech.

UI design, also known as user interface design, refers to the aesthetic design of all visual elements of a digital product’s user interface; namely the product’s presentation and interactivity.

With a user interface explicitly crafted for handheld devices that featured sophisticated touchscreen functionality, UI design would never be the same.

What Is A User Interface?

A user interface is a conduit between human and computer interaction – the space where a user will interact with a computer or machine to complete tasks.

A successful user interface should be intuitive, efficient and user-friendly.

A Graphical User Interface is specifically for software.

When we refer to a UI in Software Design, Digital Design, Web Design or UX Design, we usually mean a graphical user interface.

In UX Design, a user interface and the resulting behaviours are an end output of the design process.

On the web user interfaces are usually rendered as HTML & CSS, and in native applications using native or custom libraries.

A design system is often visualised as a collection of UI elements that define a guidelines for building a user experience within a given platform.

What Is User Interface? Definition From SearchAppArchitecture

Antidepressants: Selecting One That’S Right For You

Antidepressants: Selecting one that’s right for you.

There are a number of antidepressants available that work in slightly different ways and have different side effects.

Side effects of antidepressants vary from one medication to another and from person to person.

Doctors often start by prescribing an SSRI. These medications generally cause fewer bothersome side effects and are less likely to cause problems at higher therapeutic doses than other types of antidepressants are.

Tricyclic antidepressants – such as imipramine, nortriptyline, amitriptyline, doxepin and desipramine – tend to cause more side effects than newer antidepressants.

So tricyclic antidepressants generally aren’t prescribed unless you’ve tried other antidepressants first without improvement.

Most antidepressants are generally safe, but the Food and Drug Administration requires that all antidepressants carry black box warnings, the strictest warnings for prescriptions.

The American Psychiatric Association 2000 Practice Guideline advises that where no response is achieved following six to eight weeks of treatment with an antidepressant, to switch to an antidepressant in the same class, then to a different class of antidepressant.

The more antidepressants an individual had already tried, the less likely they were to benefit from a new antidepressant trial.

A 2003 meta-analysis found that 18% of people who had responded to an antidepressant relapsed while still taking it, compared to 41% whose antidepressant was switched for a placebo.

Antidepressant discontinuation syndrome, also called antidepressant withdrawal syndrome, is a condition that can occur following the interruption, reduction, or discontinuation of antidepressant medication.

A discontinuation syndrome can occur after stopping any antidepressant including selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors, and tricyclic antidepressants.

Approximately 20-50% of people who suddenly stop an antidepressant develop an antidepressant discontinuation syndrome.

Lithium has been used to augment antidepressant therapy in those who have failed to respond to antidepressants alone.

List Of Antidepressants + Uses, Types, Side Effects

Antidepressants are classified into different types depending on their structure and the way that they work.

Tricyclic antidepressants and tetracyclic antidepressants.

They have largely been superseded by newer antidepressants that have fewer side effects, although these older antidepressants may still suit certain people or be effective when other antidepressants have been ineffective.

Antidepressants are thought to work by increasing levels of certain neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, serotonin, and/or norepinephrine, in the brain.

Antidepressants help to relieve the symptoms of depression such as low mood, irritability, feelings of worthlessness, restlessness, anxiety, and difficulty in sleeping.

Antidepressants generally provide some relief of symptoms within one to two weeks; however, it may take six to eight weeks of treatment before the full effects are seen.

Not everybody experiences significant side effects with antidepressants, and some antidepressants are more likely to cause side effects than others.

28 Antidepressants Types, Side Effects, List & Alcohol Interactions

Antidepressant medication side effects and drug interactions are barriers to successful treatment for depression.

Some side effects of antidepressants resolve with continued use while other side effects can be managed by dose reduction or adding other therapies.

Appropriate management of side effects and avoiding drugs and alcohol that may interact with antidepressants may improve the success of depression therapy.

What are the side effects and drug interactions of SNRIs?

Some TCAs also are antihistamines or anticholinergic, and these additional actions allow for uses of TCAs other than for treating depression as well as additional side effects.

What are the side effects of tricyclic antidepressants medications?

Cimetidine may reduce the breakdown of some TCAs, for example, amitriptyline, increasing the level of the TCA in the body, and potentially leading to increased side effects.

Antidepressants List Of Names: Alphabetical Order

Antidepressants are medications that were developed to treat major depression.

In addition to treating depression, many antidepressants have been found therapeutically beneficial for other conditions such as: anxiety disorders, eating disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, and insomnia.

About 20% of Americans with a mood or anxiety disorder also have an SUD.20 One study found that about 27% of individuals with major depression also had substance abuse or dependence at some point in their lives.

Major Depressive Disorder

Major depressive disorder has been ranked as the third cause of the burden of disease worldwide in 2008 by WHO, which has projected that this disease will rank first by 2030.

It is diagnosed when an individual has a persistently low or depressed mood, anhedonia or decreased interest in pleasurable activities, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, lack of energy, poor concentration, appetite changes, psychomotor retardation or agitation, sleep disturbances, or suicidal thoughts.

Per the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, an individual must have five of the above-mentioned symptoms, of which one must be a depressed mood or anhedonia causing social or occupational impairment, to be diagnosed with MDD. History of a manic or hypomanic episode must be ruled out to make a diagnosis of MDD. Children and adolescents with MDD may present with irritable mood.

Persistent depressive disorder, formerly known as dysthymia.

11 Warning Signs Of Major Depressive Disorder

One misconception centers around the “Major” in Major Depressive Disorder -just because that word is in its name doesn’t mean it’s the worst depression ever.

Is there a difference between Major Depressive Disorder and clinical depression?

The median age for a person to get diagnosed with depression is 32, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America.

Some people with depression can’t recognize depression in themselves.

Classic depression attributes like hopelessness and suicidal comments are easy to spot, but some signs are less obvious.

Sleep deprivation can contribute to MDD-people with insomnia are 10 times more likely to have depression than people who can reliably catch Zs. Plus, depression can make getting a good night’s sleep seem impossible.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, 20% of people with anxiety or a mood disorder like depression have an alcohol or substance abuse problem.

Along with individual risk and aspects of heritability that are well-described in MDD, there is growing interest in the role of social determinants in both predisposing and in some cases, offering resiliency to MDD. For example, poverty and exposure to physical and sexual trauma are not only common in the life narrative of individuals with MDD, but are identified as accounting for substantial variability in the risk for MDD. Moreover, protective factors including but not limited to, social connectedness, spirituality, and meaningful interpersonal relationships have all been identified as buffering individuals against the effects of chronic uncontrollable stress.

Floridamedicaidmentalhealth.org Page 36 Summary for Treatment of Major Depressive Disorder Principles of Treatment Similar to the 2017-2018 Florida Best Practice Psychotherapeutic Medication Guidelines for Adults, the emphasis for the 2019-2020 guidelines is the emphasis on full functional recovery and integration as a priority therapeutic objective in MDD. Towards this overarching and patientdesired aim, it is essential that clinicians consider self-rating instruments when screening for MDD. It is also essential that once the clinical diagnosis of MDD has been established that therapeutic objectives include full symptom mitigation and consensually agreed upon therapeutic objectives in collaboration with patients.

Along with underscoring the complex interrelationship between symptoms and function in MDD, the improved symptomatic outcomes in higher functioning adults with MDD provides the impetus for simultaneously targeting symptoms and functioning in patients with MDD. Along with careful attention to the presence of depressive symptoms, the relatively high rates of medical and mental disorder comorbidity in the MDD population provides the basis for careful attention to preventing and, when present, treating comorbidity in MDD populations.

Major Depressive Disorder with Mixed Features For patients presenting with MDD and mixed features, the panel was of the view that it is important to consider the possibility that the identified patient may possibly have bipolar disorder.

Major Depressive Disorder with Psychosis There was no substantive change in the panel’s recommendation in treatment for MDD with psychosis.

MDD with psychosis affects at least 20% of individuals with MDD. Results from a recently completed randomized control trial provide results that comport with clinical impression that the combination of a conventional antidepressant and antipsychotic is the preferred, acute, and recurrence-prevention treatment option when compared to conventional antidepressant monotherapy.

Maintenance Treatment in Major Depressive Disorder Evidence indicates that the majority of individuals with MDD are at risk of recurrence.

ARM Architecture Family

With over 200 billion ARM chips produced, as of 2021, ARM is the most widely used family of instruction set architectures and the ISAs produced in the largest quantity.

The ARM architectures used in smartphones, PDAs and other mobile devices range from ARMv5 to ARMv8-A. In 2009, some manufacturers introduced netbooks based on ARM architecture CPUs, in direct competition with netbooks based on Intel Atom.

Arm Ltd. provides to all licensees an integratable hardware description of the ARM core as well as complete software development toolset and the right to sell manufactured silicon containing the ARM CPU. SoC packages integrating ARM’s core designs include Nvidia Tegra’s first three generations, CSR plc’s Quatro family, ST-Ericsson’s Nova and NovaThor, Silicon Labs’s Precision32 MCU, Texas Instruments’s OMAP products, Samsung’s Hummingbird and Exynos products, Apple’s A4, A5, and A5X, and NXP’s i.MX. Fabless licensees, who wish to integrate an ARM core into their own chip design, are usually only interested in acquiring a ready-to-manufacture verified semiconductor intellectual property core.

While Arm Ltd. does not grant the licensee the right to resell the ARM architecture itself, licensees may freely sell manufactured products such as chip devices, evaluation boards and complete systems.

Since 1995, various versions of the ARM Architecture Reference Manual have been the primary source of documentation on the ARM processor architecture and instruction set, distinguishing interfaces that all ARM processors are required to support from implementation details that may vary.

Although the architecture profiles were first defined for ARMv7, ARM subsequently defined the ARMv6-M architecture as a subset of the ARMv7-M profile with fewer instructions.

To offer similar high-performance interrupts as the 6502, the ARM design limited its physical address space to 24 bits of pointers addressing 4-byte words, so 26 bits of pointers addressing bytes, resulting in 64 MB. All ARM instructions are aligned on word boundaries so that an instruction address is a word address, so the program counter thus only needed to be 24 bits.

CPU Architecture

Arm works with its partners to evolve its architecture and meet future needs.

Armv9-A is a set of extensions to the Armv8-A architecture, and part of a rolling program of substantial enhancements to the architecture to be deployed over the next few years.

The goal of these enhancements is to help increase the computing capability in areas such as digital signal processing and machine learning, and to continually improve the security and robustness of our systems.

The latest architectures for the R-profile and M-profile are Armv8-R and Armv8-M..

ARM Architecture And Family

Over time you might see new features added as an extension, and later rolled in as a standard feature of the architecture.

Architecture covers more than instruction set, system level features, privilege and protection, exception model, etc.

You could also talk about the ‘small’ Cortex-A family, although for a specific application, there will be one specific core which is a better fit than the others.

LITTLE pairings too, but they wouldn’t be described as a family.

A single specific architecture gives a guarantee of baseline features, but doesn’t necessarily limit portability of much code since the different ISAs remain mostly common as the architectures evolve.

A further complication with ARM cores is that the wider system in a specific device is mostly free for the vendor to customise – although there are some standards available if they chose to target a specific type of application.

Looking at any specific vendor, you might even talk about a family of parts all based on a single ARM core.

ARM Architecture With A Focus On Cortex-A Family – Ahmed Lekssays

ARM Architecture or Advanced RISC Machine has become one of the most used computer architectures in the world due to its low consumption of energy, its high performance in dealing with small and multiple tasks simultaneously, its low cost, and its small size.

Thus, the motivation to learn about ARM Architecture can be seen as personal to develop our own projects or global to save the planet.

The origin of ARM Architecture came from the British technology Acorn Computers which developed ARM or Acorn RISC Machine in 1980s.

ARM has several families depending on the the ARM version from ARMv1 to ARMv8-A. The difference in version can depend on the performance, the field of use, or sometimes the manufacturer because as mentioned before ARM Holdings does not produce processors, but they make their design and architecture and give manufacturing licence to companies such as Snapdragon and Qualcomm.

Most ARM architecture implement two instruction sets the 32-bit ARM Instruction Set and 16-bit Thumb instruction set.

The Latest ARM cores such as ARMv8-A which includes Cortex-A family introduce a new instruction set called Thumb-2.

ARM Architecture is one of the the most promising technologies that every computer scientists should know about.

Definition, Working Principle & Its Uses

What is Electroplating? Electroplating is basically the process of plating a metal onto the other by hydrolysis mostly to prevent corrosion of metal or for decorative purposes.

Electroplating is often applied in the electrical oxidation of anions on a solid substrate like the formation of silver chloride on silver wire to form silver chloride electrodes.

In electroplating practice, the current is usually introduced from an external source and the anode is the positive electrode and cathode is a negative electrode.

The electroplating process uses an anode and a cathode.

In electroplating, the metal dissolved from the anode can be plated onto the cathode.

Talking about the uses of electroplating, apart from enhancing the appearance of the substrate it is used in various other purposes as well.

The electroplating procedures used in the LIGA process chain are gold plating for X-ray mask fabrication and nickel plating for molding tools and metallic micro-components.

The main difference between electroplating and electroless plating is that in electroplating an external current source is required and the process is electrolysis.

The thickness range made by electroless plating is 1-120 μm. An application of electroless plating requires more control and is more expensive than electroplating.

Plated “Alloys” are not true alloys, i.e. solid solutions, but rather discrete tiny crystals of the metals being plated.

Another common problem of pulse electroplating is that the anode material could get plated and contaminated during the reverse electroplating, especially for the high cost, inert electrode such as platinum.

A closely related process is brush electroplating, in which localized areas or entire items are plated using a brush saturated with plating solution.

The brush, typically a stainless steel body wrapped with an absorbent cloth material that both holds the plating solution and prevents direct contact with the item being plated, is connected to the anode of a low voltage direct current power source, and the item to be plated connected to the cathode.

Brush electroplating has several advantages over tank plating, including portability, ability to plate items that for some reason cannot be tank plated, low or no masking requirements, and comparatively low plating solution volume requirements.

Hard chrome is one of the most common plating materials used for hard plating and electroplating, due to its strength, resistance and sleek finish.

The two World Wars and the growing aviation industry gave impetus to further developments and refinements including such processes as hard chromium plating, bronze alloy plating, sulfamate nickel plating, along with numerous other plating processes.

What Is Electroplating?

Electroplating refers to a process that adds a surface layer of metal to another type of metal.

Electroplating involves using an electrical current to create a thin layer of metal over-top another type of metal, usually a less expensive metal.

Electroplating is typically done to give cheaper metals a more luxurious finish and to add certain properties, like anti-corrosion and anti-rust.

There are many different types of metals that are great for the electroplating process, and the good news is that we sell electroplating metals in various forms, including wire, powder, ingot, bars and shot.

Because metals are inherently conductive, electroplating is a great way to increase the conductivity of a part.

Laminate adhesion strength using DIY electroplating methods is usually lower than what is achieved by a professional plating service.

Electroplating is perhaps most commonly associated with the jewelry industry and precious metals.

What Is Electroplating & How Does It Work

As manufacturing practices advanced over the next two centuries through the Industrial Revolution and two world wars, the electroplating process also evolved to keep up with demand, resulting in the process Sharretts Plating Company uses today.

Cathode: The cathode in the electroplating circuit is the part that needs to be plated.

Plating can occur with individual metals or in various combinations that can provide additional value to the electroplating process.

Electroless plating: Electroless plating, also known as autocatalytic plating, uses a similar process as electrodeposition but does not directly apply electricity to the part.

Lend surface properties: Electroplating allows substrates to benefit from the properties of the metals they are plated with.

With our extensive experience in a range of industries, SPC can assist with these electroplating applications and more, offering a range of cost-effective plating services.

Electroplating serves as a functionally and financially beneficial option for a variety of applications, but you need to partner with the right plating company to see all the benefits.

An Introduction To Electroplating In Engineering And Manufacturing

Protective barrier: Electroplated parts can last longer with the protective barrier that’s applied during electroplating.

Oxygen absorption: Electroplating an item with palladium absorbs excess oxygen from the manufacturing of automotive catalytic converters, improving their performance.

The process is complex and at times, the electroplating defects come after issues that are already present on the object to be electroplated, before the electroplating process starts.

Loss of adhesion: Loss of adhesion between the object and the electroplated coating is one of the most common types of electroplating failure.

Electroplating plastics also allows engineering teams to take advantage of the economies of scale that have made injection molding immensely popular for large-scale production.

Caffeic acid phenethyl ester, chlorogenic acid and quinic acid derivatives have been under intense scrutiny for their diverse pharmacological effects. Phenolic acids and related compoundsPhenolic acids include the shikimic acid.

The classical examples of C6-C1 class compounds are gallic acid, p-hydroxy-benzoic acid, vanillic acid and synapic acid which were among the various phenolic derivatives isolated from pomegranate.

While the trans form p-coumaric acid has been isolated from fruit peals, juice, seeds and leaves by various authors, the cis form along with p-coumaric acid, coutaric acid, protocatechuic acid, neochlorogenic acid have been isolated from the fruit peel and juice.

These include 3,3′-di-O-methylellagic acid and 3,3,4′-tri-O-methylellagic acid from the seeds, and 3-O-methylellagic acid, 4,4′-Di-O-methylellagic acid, and 3′-O-methyl-3,4-methylenedioxy-ellagic acid isolated from the heartwood.

Shikimic Acid

Shikimic acid, more commonly known as its anionic form shikimate, is a cyclohexene, a cyclitol and a cyclohexanecarboxylic acid.

Although this reaction requires nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide as a cofactor, the enzymic mechanism regenerates it, resulting in the net use of no NAD. DHQ is dehydrated to 3-dehydroshikimic acid by the enzyme 3-dehydroquinate dehydratase, which is reduced to shikimic acid by the enzyme shikimate dehydrogenase, which uses nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate as a cofactor.

In the pharmaceutical industry, shikimic acid from the Chinese star anise is used as a base material for production of oseltamivir.

The low isolation yield of shikimic acid from the Chinese star anise is blamed for the 2005 shortage of oseltamivir.

The availability of a cheap chiral building block can overcome these additional costs, for example, shikimic acid for oseltamivir.

Aminoshikimic acid is also an alternative to shikimic acid as a starting material for the synthesis of oseltamivir.

The acid is highly soluble in water and insoluble in nonpolar solvents, and this is why shikimic acid is active only against Gram-positive bacteria, due to outer cell membrane impermeability of Gram-negatives.

Production Of Shikimic Acid

Shikimic acid is a key intermediate for the synthesis of the antiviral drug oseltamivir.

Shikimic acid can be produced via chemical synthesis, microbial fermentation and extraction from certain plants.

An alternative production route is via biotransformation of the more readily available quinic acid.

Much of the current supply of shikimic acid is sourced from the seeds of Chinese star anise.

Supply from star anise seeds has experienced difficulties and is susceptible to vagaries of weather.

Star anise tree takes around six-years from planting to bear fruit, but remains productive for long.

In the future, production in recombinant microorganisms via fermentation may become established as the preferred route.

Modeling Human And Organizational Behavior: Application To Military Simulations

Klein and colleagues have proposed a particular type of decision making model for these situations, the recognition-primed decision model, which incorporates three levels of decisions: “matching,” or a simple mapping of a recognized situation to a prescribed decision or action; “diagnosing,” or iterative probing of the environment until the situation is recognized, followed by a triggering of the prescribed decision or action; and “Evaluating” or mapping of a recognized situation to a set of prescribed decisions, followed by selection of the most appropriate decision through a mental simulation.

At all these levels, situation assessment plays a critical role, central to all subsequent decisions or actions.

One aspect of situation awareness, which has been referred to as crew awareness, is the extent to which the personnel involved have a common mental image of what is happening and an understanding of how others are perceiving the same situation.

The ideas of distributed cognition, shared mental models, and common frame of reference play a role in understanding how groups can be aware of a situation and thus act upon it.

The relationship between individual and team mental models and the importance of shared cognition to team and organizational performance is a matter requiring extensive research.

MODELS OF SITUATION AWARENESS. A variety of situation awareness models have been hypothesized and developed by psychologists and human factors researchers, primarily through empirical studies in the field, but increasingly with computational modeling tools.

Situational Awareness: What It Is And Why It Matters As A Management Tool For Professionals

On the most basic level, situational awareness is about knowing what is going on in the environment and its implications for the present and the future.

As a project manager, a high level of situational awareness can make your life much easier as you are able to avoid issues from the very beginning.

A high level of situational awareness ensures that unsafe situations are recognized as critical, are addressed, and that countermeasures are implemented.

This makes situational awareness a management tool to drive organizational learning.

The first level of situational awareness is about perceiving the relevant information.

The second level of situational awareness refers to the requirement to properly comprehend the relevant information.

Another practical example of a communication tool that fosters situational awareness are checklists.

Situation Awareness

Situational awareness or situation awareness is the perception of environmental elements and events with respect to time or space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their future status.

Research programs in flight-crew computer interaction and mental workload measurement built on the concept of awareness measurement from a series of experiments that measured contingency awareness during learning, and later extended to mental workload and fatigue.

Situation awareness is sometimes confused with the term “Situational understanding.” In the context of military command and control applications, situational understanding refers to the “Product of applying analysis and judgment to the unit’s situation awareness to determine the relationships of the factors present and form logical conclusions concerning threats to the force or mission accomplishment, opportunities for mission accomplishment, and gaps in information”.

The situation awareness of the team as a whole is dependent upon both a high level of SA among individual team members for the aspects of the situation necessary for their job; and a high level of shared SA between team members, providing an accurate common operating picture of those aspects of the situation common to the needs of each member.

Situation awareness for first responders in medical situations also includes evaluating and understanding what happened to avoid injury of responders and also to provide information to other rescue agencies which may need to know what the situation is via radio prior to their arrival on the scene.

Within the search and rescue context, situational awareness is applied primarily to avoid injury to search crews however being aware of the environment, the lay of the land, and the many other factors of influence within one’s surroundings assists in the location of injured or missing individuals Public safety agencies are increasingly using situational awareness applications like ATAK on mobile devices to improve situational awareness.

A great deal of that training describes situational awareness as an approach toward environmental awareness but also self-awareness which includes being aware of one’s own emotional attitude, tiredness, and even caloric intake.

Situational awareness is the most essential but non-technical skill.

The benefits of situational awareness are numerous, with the most notable ones being an increase in safety, task, team, and company culture.

In simpler words, situational awareness has three parts.

Perceiving important information is the first step in situational awareness.

Properly comprehending the relevant information is significant, which falls under the second level of situational awareness.

Effective situational awareness allows executives to see the past, the present, and what might happen next.

The team will follow the management’s lead if practicing effective situational awareness frequently.

What Is Situational Awareness?

Situational awareness is defined as the “Perception of environmental elements and events” In other words, situational awareness is the ability to know and understand what is going on around you.

Safety products often reduce our situational awareness in the name of protection.

There are 2 major hazards that come to mind when we think of limited situational awareness.

So the big question is, how can you enhance your situational awareness without removing your PPE altogether?

Not all PPE is restrictive! Look for glasses and hearing protectors that enhance situational awareness.

This may look like night vision safety goggles for increased situational awareness in the dark, or hearing protectors with active listening technology for situational awareness on the jobsite.

Technology to improve situational awareness is evolving each day.

Consumers and manufacturers sometimes have questions about the term “Cosmeceutical.”

The term “Cosmeceutical” has no meaning under the law.

While the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act does not recognize the term “Cosmeceutical,” the cosmetic industry uses this word to refer to cosmetic products that have medicinal or drug-like benefits.

The FD&C Act defines drugs as those products that cure, treat, mitigate or prevent disease or that affect the structure or function of the human body, if a product makes such claims it will be regulated as a drug.

Cosmetics are intended to beautify, promote attractiveness, alter appearance or cleanse; they are not approved by FDA for sale nor are they intended to effect structure or function of the body.

This document is current and is updated only when necessary.

This activity will also distinguish cosmeceuticals from cosmetics and drugs, the uses of each, general regulatory aspects and highlight the role of the interprofessional team in the appropriate utilization of cosmeceuticals and on educating patients about them.

In Europe and Japan, cosmeceuticals are a subclass of cosmetics; however, in the US, cosmeceuticals can only be considered as a subclass of drugs.

INDICATION/CLASSIFICATION OF COSMECEUTICALS. There is no single/accepted classification of cosmeceuticals.

TOXICITY OF COSMECEUTICALS – NOT TO BE IGNORED. The consumer-manufacturer enthusiasm revolving around cosmeceuticals has unfortunately eventuated into addition f many chemicals as additives in the commercially available preparations to enhance their properties, qualities, significance, performance, and viability.

In the skin, ROL is oxidized to RAL, and RAL to RA; the latter being the biologically active form of vitamin A. Topical cosmeceuticals containing ROL and RAL are expected to work after getting metabolized to RA by the effect of the skin enzyme cytochrome P-450-dependent RA 4-hydroxylase.

Although the detailed discussion on toxicity profile of cosmeceuticals paints a gloomy picture, in essence, most of the meticulously manufactured cosmeceuticals have good tolerance and require minor management approaches for the typically mild and transient adverse effects like a burning sensation, irritation, erythema, PIH, etc.

Every skin has different reactivity, response patterns, and a tendency to develop adverse effects to both pharmaceutical topicals as well as cosmeceuticals.

The aptness of the term ‘cosmeceutical’ gained more ground as it represented a new breed of cosmetic products, which provided effects beyond simple cosmetic enhancement but fell short of qualifying for a drug or pharmaceutical.

In India, a well-defined Drugs and Cosmetics Act operates the regulations of cosmetics under the authority of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization.

In the U.S., for example, in contrast to strict laws for drugs, there is no requirement for manufacturers to demonstrate either safety or efficacy before marketing a product that would otherwise qualify as a cosmeceutical, as is the case for drugs.

The Japanese authorities identify that many skincare products qualify as neither pure drugs nor pure cosmetics in the traditional sense, but a mix of the two, and call them ‘quasi-drugs.

Currently, cosmeceuticals are a segregated subclass within the domain of a cosmetic or drug.

In Europe and Japan, cosmeceuticals are a subclass of cosmetics; however, in the US, cosmeceuticals can only be considered as a subclass of drugs.

The legendary legal controversy on the regulatory labeling of topical minoxidil for male pattern baldness resulted in the assertion that the pharmaceutical activity of a product, rather than the condition it is intended to modify, determines whether it is a cosmetic or a drug.

Cosmeceuticals are the marriage of cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Vitamin C is a known antioxidant and when this is added to a lotion or cream the product is considered a cosmeceutical.”

If you read a product’s label and see things like botanical and marine extracts, vitamins, or peptides, it probably could be considered a cosmeceutical.

The FDA doesn’t recognize cosmeceuticals as a separate class of beauty products.

“As far as the FDA is concerned, there is no provision for a cosmeceutical. A product is either regulated as a cosmetic or it’s regulated as a drug, and where it falls all depends on the types of claims that are being made,” says cosmetic chemist Jim Hammer.

If claims are being made, many times these products have undergone a significant amount of testing to support these claims, from consumer and controlled laboratory tests to stability and preservative efficacy tests.

Still, Jhin says, “The most important thing consumers need to realize is that cosmeceuticals have not undergone rigorous investigation by the FDA, and so you must not take their claims as true or beneficial,” she says.

PB Fintech Share Price: Policybazaar Stock Gets Rating Upgrade In Overly Cautious Market

NEW DELHI: PB Fintech, which has Policybazaar as a wholly-owned subsidiary, received a rating upgrade by JM Financial.

It now has a ‘buy’ rating for the stock against ‘hold’ earlier, as it believes that the market is overly cautious on the insurance distribution platform.

“We were already appreciative of the business model and the recent stock price correction also makes the risk-reward extremely favourable. We continue to believe that Policybazaar will remain the dominant insurance distribution platform in India and upgrade PB Fintech to ‘buy’ rating with a March 2023 target of Rs 980, using DCF valuation methodology as an intrinsic valuation approach seems more plausible in light of the volatile markets,” it said.

Since making a high of Rs 1,470, PB Fintech has corrected 52 per cent despite the company reporting 44 per cent YoY 9MFY22 revenue growth and announcing a what JM Financial said was gamechanging partnership with Life Insurance Corporation of India.

JM Financial said PB Fintech has seen rapid improvement in adjusted Ebitda margin to reach in FY21 since dipping to 58 per cent in FY19.

Illumina Unveils Groundbreaking Comprehensive Genomic Profiling Test For Cancer In Europe

PRNewswire/ – Illumina, Inc. today announced the launch of TruSight™ Oncology Comprehensive, a single test that assesses multiple tumor genes and biomarkers to reveal the specific molecular profile of a patient’s cancer.

This new in vitro diagnostic comprehensive genomic profiling kit covers a broad range of mutations and current and emerging biomarkers associated with the European Society for Medical Oncology guidelines, drug labels and clinical trials, maximizing the chances of finding actionable information from each patient’s biopsy.

Consultant Clinical Scientist at the All Wales Medical Genomics Services, Cardiff, UK. “We need a testing platform that can assess all these biomarkers, while at the same time preserving limited biopsy specimen. Comprehensive genomic profiling has proven to be this platform.”

“When a medical center internalizes comprehensive genomic profiling of cancer, the multidisciplinary team includes a molecular pathologist who has more control over the biopsy sample and data generated, and can increase the number of informed cases they are able to deliver. Evidence suggests when this happens, more patients have access to CGP and precision medicine earlier on in their disease journey.”

About TSO Comprehensive TruSight™ Oncology Comprehensive is an in vitro diagnostic test that uses targeted next generation sequencing to detect variants in 517 genes using nucleic acids extracted from formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tumor tissue samples from cancer patients with solid malignant neoplasms using the Illumina® NextSeq™ 550Dx instrument.

The test can be used to detect single nucleotide variants, multi-nucleotide variants, insertions, deletions and gene amplifications from DNA, and gene fusions and splice variants from RNA. The test also reports a Tumor Mutational Burden score and Microsatellite Instability status.

The test is intended to provide tumor profiling information for use by qualified healthcare professionals in accordance with professional guidelines and is not conclusive or prescriptive for labeled use of any specific therapeutic product.

What Are In Vitro Diagnostic Tests, And How Are They Regulated?

Patients may receive-or forgo-medical care based on diagnostic test results, making it critically important that tests are reliable.

These tests are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration as medical devices, which means manufacturers must submit studies confirming a test’s accuracy and usefulness in diagnosing a particular condition before bringing it to market.

Though some test developers dispute that FDA has jurisdiction over LDTs-arguing that the tests are more properly seen as procedures that constitute the practice of medicine-the agency maintains that these tests are devices and fall under agency jurisdiction through the Medical Device Amendments of 1976.

These categories correspond with increasing levels of regulatory scrutiny, with most tests in Class I-and some in Class II-being exempt from premarket requirements, while most Class II and all Class III tests require some form of premarket review before they can be used with patients.

These are typically Class III tests that pose a high degree of risk, or tests that have no known equivalent on the market.

Proponents of greater FDA oversight, including the agency itself,24 have argued that diagnostics should be regulated based on risk, not on where tests are made, and that applying the same requirements to LDTs as apply to other IVDs would help protect patients from harm and create a more level playing field for test developers.

Such tests need only detect the presence or absence of a virus, and are relatively straightforward to perform compared to tests that rely on quantitative analysis of patient samples.

Quality Control Definition & Example

What Does Quality Control Mean? Quality control means how a company measures that its product quality is maintained or improved if need be.

What Are the 4 Types of Quality Control? There are several methods of quality control.

Why Is Quality Control Important? Quality control ensures that defective goods do not go out to the public.

In food and drug manufacturing, quality control prevents products that make customers sick, and in manufacturing, quality control can ensure that accidents don’t happen when people use a product.

What Is an Example of Quality Control? An aspect of quality control in food production would be overseeing the ingredient specifications, reviewing supplier lists, and ensuring the facility where the food product is made is sanitary.

What Is the Difference Between Quality Assurance and Quality Control? Quality assurance is about how a process is performed or how a product is made.

Quality control focuses on quality management and how the overall quality of the products overseen by the company.

What Is Quality Control?

In this article, we discuss what quality control is, why it is important and some types of quality control.

What is quality control? Quality control or QC is the process that businesses use to ensure that a product or service adheres to a predefined set of quality standards or meets the requirements of customers or clients.

Quality control vs. quality assurance These two terms are often used interchangeably, and while there are activities within these processes that are interrelated, they are actually defined differently.

Quality control, on the other hand, refers to the inspection aspect of quality management, specifically the techniques and activities used to meet the quality requirements.

Encouragement of quality consciousness: Quality control encourages employees to keep quality in mind throughout the manufacturing process, which can help the company’s ability to achieve the desired level of quality each time.

Lower production costs: The process used for quality control checks the production of items that don’t meet quality standards, correcting any problems and bringing down the cost of production.

Increased sales: Consistent quality control can help the company develop a reputation for quality, which can in turn attract new customers and increase sales.

The quality management system is not only concerned with monitoring QC/QA programs, but should also include administrative considerations that may indirectly influence the quality and efficiency of the laboratory operation.

A widely used quality management system model organizes all of the laboratory activities into twelve quality system essentials, which are a set of coordinated activities that serve as building blocks for quality management: 1.

A. Quality systems essentials for meningitis diagnostic laboratories Most of the quality systems essentials described above are not specific to the meningitis diagnostic laboratory and should apply to all laboratory disciplines regardless of the nature of the specimens, pathogens, or assays.

The SOPs, QC/QA procedures, specimen testing request forms, report forms, and other laboratory forms are all important components of the quality manual, which documents the quality management system.

Assessment Assessment is a tool for examining laboratory performance and comparing it to known standards or to performance of other laboratories.

Assessment may be internal, performed by the laboratory’s own staff, or may be external, conducted by an external group or agency outside the laboratory.

The laboratory reports the results back to the organizer who will compare the test results with known results and record a pass or fail for the PT. o Confirmation by sending a subset of isolates to a reference laboratory for reidentification and characterization.

Quality Control

Quality control is a process by which entities review the quality of all factors involved in production.

ISO 9000 defines quality control as “A part of quality management focused on fulfilling quality requirements”.

Quality control separates the act of testing products to uncover defects from the decision to allow or deny product release, which may be determined by fiscal constraints.

Various methods have been proposed to prioritize quality control issues and determine whether to leave them unaddressed or use quality assurance techniques to improve and stabilize production.

In project management, quality control requires the project manager and/or the project team to inspect the accomplished work to ensure its alignment with the project scope.

Basic Quality Control Concepts

From the buyer’s perspective, quality control activities help confirm that a batch of products meet specifications.

If you have not started doing professional quality control, you will need to understand these 3 concepts to make sure the QC inspection plan meets your needs and that you obtain products which reach your expectations from your suppliers in Asia.

Suppose you source a product from a factory that often ships substandard quality.

Why? Because the better workmanship of the other product might “Compensate” for its poor quality.

With these settings and your detailed product specifications, a QC inspector can check your products and reach a conclusion.

Spending a few hundreds of dollars to check and fix issues early can be an excellent investment; if might save you weeks of delay, shipments by air, and/or lower quality products that you have to accept and deliver to your own customers.

Quality Assurance Vs Quality Control: Definitions & Differences

Quality assurance and quality control are two aspects of quality management.

Quality assurance can be defined as “Part of quality management focused on providing confidence that quality requirements will be fulfilled.” The confidence provided by quality assurance is twofold-internally to management and externally to customers, government agencies, regulators, certifiers, and third parties.

Quality control can be defined as “Part of quality management focused on fulfilling quality requirements.” While quality assurance relates to how a process is performed or how a product is made, quality control is more the inspection aspect of quality management.

The quality assurance function in a service organization may not include quality control of the service but may include quality control of any products involved in providing the service.

The quality profession expanded to include the quality assurance and quality audit functions.

Rethinking Statistics For Quality Control As methods used for statistical process control become more sophisticated, it becomes apparent that the required tools have not been included in courses that teach statistics in quality control.

Quality for Life: Quality Assurance for Medical Software For QuadraMed, a provider of healthcare technologies, quality assurance is the last line of defense before software is released to the marketplace.

What Is Quality Control? Quality Control VS Quality Assurance

Often, quality control is confused with quality assurance.

Quality control is concerned with examining the product or service – the end result ‐ and quality assurance is concerned with examining the process that leads to the end result.

A company would use quality assurance to ensure that a product is manufactured in the right way, thereby reducing or eliminating potential problems with the quality of the final product.

Quality assurance oversees the process that leads to the finished product, while quality control tests the final product to ensure it meets expectations.

While quality assurance is comprehensive in oversight, quality control is a very specialized area.

While quality control identifies issues with the product, quality assurance determines how to fix the problem.

In service industries, quality control focuses on the customer’s satisfaction, while quality assurance monitors the performance of the employees.

Accordingly, the intestinal enzyme lactase that hydrolyzes the milk disaccharide lactose to generate the absorbable monosaccharides glucose and galactose is expressed at high levels at birth and stays high until the weaning period.

Amylopectin constitutes about 80% of dietary starch and has branch points every 25 molecules along the straight glucose chains; the α-1,6 glucose linkages in amylopectin identify the end products of amylase digestion-maltose, maltotriose, and the residual branch saccharides, the dextrins.

The brush border of the small intestine contains the enzymes lactase, maltase, sucrase-isomaltase, and trehalase, which split the disaccharides as well as other small glucose polymers into their constituent monosaccharides.

Sucrase-isomaltase is a complex with two subunits; sucrase hydrolyzes sucrose to yield glucose and fructose, and isomaltase hydrolyzes the α-1,6 bonds in α-limit dextrins to yield glucose.

The major routes of absorption are by three membrane carrier systems: sodium-glucose transporter 1, glucose transporter 5, and glucose transporter 2.3 Glucose and galactose are absorbed by a carrier-mediated active transport mechanism, which involves the cotransport of sodium.

The disaccharidase activity is rate-limiting for absorption of glucose and galactose from lactose, and of glucose from hydrolysis of glucose oligomers when α-amylase activity is scarce.

Maltase-glucoamylase accounts for about 2% of the brush border protein, and cleaves small glucose polymers and α-limit dextrins produced by α-amylase activity.

Carbohydrase is the name of a set of enzymes that catalyze 5 types of reactions, turning carbohydrates into simple sugars, from the large family of glycosidases.

Carbohydrases are produced in the pancreas, salivary glands and small intestine, breaking down polysaccharides.

This is because complex sugars are often insoluble, and therefore breaking them down will make it easier for the sugars to be absorbed into the blood, through the wall of the small intestine.

A carbohydrate is usually a compound consisting of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.

Carbohydrase facilitates the hydrolysis of polysaccharides into simpler sugars called Monosaccharides.

α-amylase breaks starch down into maltose and dextrin, by breaking down large, insoluble starch molecules into soluble starches producing successively smaller starches and ultimately maltose.

β-amylase catalyses the hydrolysis of starch into maltose by the process of removing successive maltose units from the non-reducing ends of the chains.
