Symptoms And Causes
The faulty signaling causes the heart to beat too fast, too slow or irregularly.
Some heart arrhythmias may cause bothersome – sometimes even life-threatening – signs and symptoms.
Chaotic heart signaling causes a rapid, uncoordinated heart rate.
Heart arrhythmias may not cause any signs or symptoms.
In a healthy heart, this heart signaling process usually goes smoothly, resulting in a normal resting heart rate of 60 to 100 beats a minute.
Narrowed heart arteries, a heart attack, abnormal heart valves, prior heart surgery, heart failure, cardiomyopathy and other heart damage are risk factors for almost any kind of arrhythmia.
If an arrhythmia is causing heart failure symptoms, methods to control the heart rate may improve heart function.
Heart Arrhythmia: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment
Heart arrhythmia, also referred to as cardiac arrhythmia, is an abnormal rhythm of the heart.
This causes the heart to beat too fast, too slow, or with an irregular rhythm.
Arrhythmias are identified by where they originate in the heart and whether they cause the heart to beat slow or fast.
Slow heart rhythms occur when the hearts normal pacemaker fails or when there is a conduction block within the conduction pathways.
These typically include blood tests, a chest X-ray, an EKG that detects and records the heart’s electrical activity, and an echocardiogram that uses sound waves to create a moving picture of your heart.
Frequently Asked Questions: Can a Heart Arrhythmia ever just go away?
This can feel as if your heart is beating with extra and/or fast heartbeats, or your heart seems to skip a beat.
What Is An Arrhythmia?
Your heart may beat too quickly, too slowly, or with an irregular rhythm.
A frequent irregular rhythm may mean that your heart is not pumping enough blood to your body.
Arrhythmias are treatable with medicine or procedures to control the irregular rhythms.
If not treated, arrhythmias can damage the heart, brain, or other organs.
During cardiac arrest, the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating, causing death if it is not treated within minutes.
You may need to avoid activities that may trigger your arrhythmia.
These steps may help prevent your arrhythmia from getting worse.
Arrhythmia: Types, Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis & Treatments
What are the types of arrhythmias? Tachycardia: A fast heart rhythm with a rate of more than 100 beats per minute.
A ventricular arrhythmia begins in the heart’s ventricles.
V-tach can be serious, especially in people with heart disease, and may be associated with more symptoms than other types of arrhythmia.
You may want to see an electrophysiologist – a cardiologist who has additional specialized training in the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders.
Echocardiogram: A type of ultrasound used to provide a view of the heart to determine if there is heart muscle or valve disease that may be causing an arrhythmia.
Arrhythmia surgery may also be recommended if you need surgery, such as valve surgery or bypass surgery, to correct other forms of heart disease.
Choosing a doctor to treat your abnormal heart rhythm depends on where you are in your diagnosis and treatment.
Arrhythmia: Symptoms, Types, Causes, Diagnosis, And Treatment
You could have an arrhythmia even if your heart is healthy.
Some types of heart disease can also run in families.
You can have a rapid heart rate because of an extra pathway between your heart’s upper and lower chambers.
This can be a serious arrhythmia, especially in people who have heart disease, and it may be linked to other symptoms.
It can help find out what’s causing heart rhythm problems and find the best treatment for you.
It delivers high-frequency electrical energy to a small area inside your heart that causes the unusual rhythm.
If you have no symptoms and you haven’t had any serious heart rhythm problems, you should be able to drive as you always have.
Cardiac Arrhythmias: Diagnosis, Symptoms, And Treatments
The cardiac arrhythmia is characterized by irregular rhythm of heartbeat which could be either too slow or too fast and can happen at any age.
The use of pacemaker and defibrillators devices has been suggested for heart arrhythmias patients.
The antiarrhythmic medications have been reported for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias or irregular heartbeats.
The diagnosis, symptoms, and treatments of cardiac arrhythmias as well as the radiofrequency ablation, tachycardia, Brugada syndrome, arterial fibrillation, and recent research on the genetics of cardiac arrhythmias have been described here.
Cardiac Arrhythmias Guide: Causes, Symptoms And Treatment Options
A cardiac arrhythmia is any abnormal heart rate or rhythm.
Sinus node dysfunction – This usually causes a slow heart rate, with a heart rate of 50 beats per minute or less.
Supraventricular tachyarrhythmias – This diverse family of cardiac arrhythmias causes rapid heartbeats that start in parts of the heart above the ventricles.
This is because certain cardiac arrhythmias cause a mismatch of the pulse and the heart sounds.
Other treatment options include radiofrequency catheter ablation, or electrical cardioversion, a procedure that delivers a timed electrical shock to the heart to restore normal heart rhythm.
People with second-degree A-V block may be monitored with frequent EKGs, especially if they do not have any symptoms and have a heart rate that is adequate for their daily activities.
The outlook for cardiac arrhythmias depends on the type of rhythm disturbance and whether the person has coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, or some other heart muscle disorder.

Cardiology: What It Is, When It Is Needed, And What To Expect
Cardiology is the study and treatment of disorders of the heart and the blood vessels.
A person with heart disease or cardiovascular disease may be referred to a cardiologist.
The cardiologist will carry out tests, and they may perform some procedures, such as heart catheterizations, angioplasty, or inserting a pacemaker.
Heart disease relates specifically to the heart, while cardiovascular disease affects the heart, the blood vessels, or both.
A cardiologist can carry out tests for a heart murmur or an abnormal heart rhythm.
The cardiologist can give advice about preventing heart disease.
A person may need to see a cardiologist even without symptoms, if they have a family history of heart disease or high cholesterol, if they are or have been a smoker, if they have diabetes, or if they are starting a new exercise program.

Cardiology
Cardiologists provide the continuing care of patients with cardiovascular disease, performing basic studies of heart function and supervising all aspects of therapy, including the administration of drugs to modify heart functions.
The foundation of the field of cardiology was laid in 1628, when English physician William Harvey published his observations on the anatomy and physiology of the heart and circulation.
During the 18th and 19th centuries physicians acquired a deeper understanding of the vagaries of pulse and blood pressure, of heart sounds and heart murmurs, of respiration and exchange of blood gases in the lungs, of heart muscle structure and function, of congenital heart defects, of electrical activity in the heart muscle, and of irregular heart rhythms.
Dozens of clinical observations conducted in those centuries live on today in the vernacular of cardiology-for example, Adams-Stokes syndrome, a type of heart block named for Irish physicians Robert Adams and William Stokes; Austin Flint murmur, named for the American physician who discovered the disorder; and tetralogy of Fallot, a combination of congenital heart defects named for French physician Étienne-Louis-Arthur Fallot.
Cardiac catheterization, invented in 1929 by German surgeon Werner Forssmann and refined soon after by American physiologists André Cournand and Dickinson Richards, opened the way for measuring pressure inside the heart, studying normal and abnormal electrical activity, and directly visualizing the heart chambers and blood vessels.
Today the discipline of nuclear cardiology provides a means of measuring blood flow and contraction in heart muscle through the use of radioisotopes.
In parallel with advances in cardiac catheterization and angiography, surgeons developed techniques for allowing the blood circulation to bypass the heart through heart-lung machines, thereby permitting surgical correction of all manner of acquired and congenital heart diseases.

FC Barcelona Have Many ‘False Parents’ Trying To Claim Ownership Of Pedri Signing
“I’m not the leader, we’re all the leaders,” Pedri insisted post-match.
It has been noted that there are many ‘false parents’ trying to claim ownership of being responsible for bringing Pedri to the La Liga giants.
MORE FOR YOU. As SPORT note, “When a signing goes wrong, many try to evade responsibility, but when it succeeds in such a colossal way as with Pedri, people end up appearing from all sides assuring their share of authorship even if their participation is minimal and inconsequential”.
This is happening now with Pedri, who cost a meager $5.5mn from Las Palmas in 2019.
Planes and sporting director Franc Carbo then worked with the Las Palmas president and Pedri’s agent to get the deal over the line, and the rest is history after the playmaker officially signed in 2019 but made his way to the first team squad the following year when Ronald Koeman took a punt on him.
Nobody else, including club legend Jose Bakero who only saw Pedri once when he was in charge of grassroots football at Barca, was actively involved in the signing.
As Pedri continues to mold into the icon he is fast becoming expect many other ‘false parents’ to emerge claiming paternity to his signature.

Different Types Of Spray Foam
Builders often turn to high-density spray foam when high insulation values and strength are needed.
As its name implies, this foam has a denser structure than either of the other types of spray foam.
Medium-density foam is applied as low- or high-pressure two-component spray foam.
Also known as open-cell-foam, low-density spray foam is spray applied to provide a continuous insulation and an air-sealing barrier.
Low-density foam is applied as low or high-pressure, two-component polyurethane spray foam.
Low-density spray foam can be applied on walls, in unvented attics, to ducts and ceilings, and in vented attics and crawl spaces.
Low-density spray foam provides heat insulation and seals airflow through cracks, joints and seams by filling the cavities.
Closed Cell Spray Foam
ABOUT CLOSED CELL SPRAY FOAM. Versi-Foam® 2 lb closed cell spray foam insulation kits are available in two different formulations: Standard Formula and Class I Formula.
The Standard Formula provides an R-value of 7.7 at a one-inch thickness.
Recommended for most commercial and industrial applications, the Standard Formula is ideal for air sealing, wall or ceiling insulation, condensation control, sound dampening, structural enhancement, tank and pipe insulation, roof repair, marine flotation, truck/trailer insulation, sculpting and molding, pool and spa insulation, and much more.
The Class I Formula provides an R-value 6.7 at a. one inch thickness.
Classified as Class I in accordance with ASTM E-84, these flame-retardant kits will limit the flame spread and smoke development if exposed to a fire.
Class I closed cell spray foam kits are recommended for use in inhabited buildings, including residential applications or any application in which flammability is a concern.
All of our Class I kits are manufactured with an anti-microbial formula that stops mold from growing on the surface of the foam.
Spray Foam
1.8-2 pound polyurethane foam has the highest R-value of readily available spray foam insulation used in homes and buildings.
Foam thermoset plastics reduce conductive heat transfer due in part to having very loose molecular bonds; In addition the cells of the installed spray foam are either filled with air in the case of open cell foam or HFC’s or H(C)FO’s, 1233zd(E in closed cell foam.
Foam insulation materials, such as spray foam insulation, are opaque to thermal radiation, like most solid materials.
Spray foam insulation or spray polyurethane foam is an alternative to traditional building insulation such as fiberglass.
Spray polyurethane foam insulation can be categorized into two different types: light-density open-cell spray foam insulation and medium-density closed-cell spray foam insulation.
Every installer of CAN/ULC-S705.1 compliant medium density, spray applied foam must be licensed in order to spray foam and hold valid photo ID issued by their Quality Assurance Program provider showing their license is in good standing.
A few spray foam suppliers have started supplying spray foam blown with hydrofluoroolefin blowing agents without this problem as of early 2017.

Endurance Wind Power Bankruptcy Spreads To UK
The recent bankruptcy of Surrey-based Endurance Wind Power is now being felt in the UK, where the company’s British subsidiaries are also now being forced into creditor protection.
Endurance Wind Power filed for bankruptcy sometime around early November and placed under trust with Grant Thonrton, after its bank called in its loan.
British media are now reporting that Endurance’s UK subsidiaries – Endurance Wind Power Ltd. and Endurance Manufacturing Ltd. – have also been placed under administration with Grant Thornton’s UK division, putting 45 jobs there at risk.
It appears Endurance Wind Power is one of the more recent victims of a weak British pound and reductions in renewable energy subsidies in the UK, which was its biggest market for wind turbines.
In 2012, the company changed its business model from being strictly a wind turbine manufacturer to a wind power developer as well – a move that now appears to have been fatal.
Endurance did not build wind turbines for large-scale wind farms.
Endurance Wind Power is the second B.C. renewable energy company to go under since in the last five years.

In 1939, Eric Warburg of the Warburg banking family founded a company under the name E.M. Warburg & Co. Its first address was 52 William Street, New York, the Kuhn Loeb building.
In 1966, E.M. Warburg merged with Lionel I. Pincus & Co, forming a new company that eventually became known as E.M. Warburg, Pincus & Co. In 1965, when Eric Warburg retired to Germany, control was handed to Lionel Pincus, a partner in the Ladenburg Thalmann investment bank, and the working language of the office switched from German to English.
In late 2018, Warburg Pincus closed its Warburg Pincus Global Growth, L.P. fund at $14.8 billion, and in June 2019, closed its Warburg Pincus China-Southeast Asia II, L.P. fund at $4.25 billion.

Siegmund wished to expand the S.G. Warburg franchise into New York but was blocked by the existence of E.M. Warburg & Co. Following the effective sale of the business to Pincus, Siegmund Warburg accused Eric of prostituting the Warburg name.
In January 1970, Siegmund finally got the name changed to E.M. Warburg, Pincus & Company to differentiate it from S.G. Warburg & Company.

Post Idea #13: Bomb disposal

Bomb Disposal
Bomb disposal is an all-encompassing term to describe the separate, but interrelated functions in the military fields of explosive ordnance disposal and improvised explosive device disposal, and the public safety roles of public safety bomb disposal and the bomb squad. The first professional civilian bomb squad was established by Sir Vivian Dering Majendie.
Each company had ten sections, each section having a bomb disposal officer and 14 other ranks to assist.
The problem of UXBs was further complicated when Royal Engineer bomb disposal personnel began to encounter munitions fitted with anti-handling devices e.g. the Luftwaffe’s ZUS40 anti-removal bomb fuze of 1940.
Bomb fuzes incorporating anti-handling devices were specifically designed to kill bomb disposal personnel.
In May 1941, British colleagues helped establish the Naval Mine Disposal School at the Naval Gun Factory, Washington, D.C. Concurrently, the U.S. Navy, under the command of Lt. Draper L. Kauffman, created the Naval Bomb Disposal School at University Campus, Washington, D.C. The first US Army Bomb Disposal companies were deployed in North Africa and Sicily, but proved cumbersome and were replaced with mobile seven-man squads in 1943.
The first ever Wheelbarrow was conceived by Major Robert John Wilson ‘Pat’ Patterson RAOC and his team at the Bomb Disposal School, CAD Kineton in 1972 and used by ammunition technicians in the battle against Provisional Irish Republican Army bombs.
Another technique is Trepanation, in which a bore is cut into the sidewall of a bomb and the explosive contents are extracted through a combination of steam and acid bath liquefaction of bomb contents.
Bomb Disposal
Night Raid 1931 has a more realistic take on bomb disposal in the third episode: Two are moved using psychic powers to relatively safe places to blow up, while the third is disarmed after Yukina is able to read the memories of the man who built the bomb… Gunsmith Cats has a few chapters here and there devoted to Minnie May or her boyfriend Ken Taki defusing bombs.
A subplot of The Small Back Room – the novel by Nigel Balchin, later made into a film in which a bomb disposal officer consults the boffin protagonist in defusing a new type of German bomb.
Grisaia Series: In Labyrinth on Sachi’s after story, Yuuji and Sachi has to find and dispose of a bomb, that a madman planted in the church, on their own wedding… In Eden Sachi has to defuse a bomb as part of a test, set up by the Thanatos system to measure her skills, but for that reason it’s actually a mock bomb…. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies: Ted Tonate states his job as Bomb Disposal Specialist, and we see him disassemble and reassemble his model bomb so quickly, his arms turn into an invisible blur.
Ménage 3 uses bomb disposal as an appropriate metaphor for a rather strange and distinctly NSFW situation in strip #1082.
In the ’90s Spider-Man cartoon, the title character disposes of a time bomb by throwing it straight up right when it’s about to explode.
Race Bannon gets rid of a bomb by throwing it out a window, in the middle of downtown Hong Kong.
Futurama, “A Big Ball Of Garbage”: When the bomb meant to blow up the ball of garbage is set to blow up too soon, they try throwing it up in the air.
The term “Bomb disposal robot” is something of a misnomer, as they are not technically robots.
These robots operate as a remote presence for the bomb disposal experts, or “Bomb doctors” as they are known within the British Army.
Usually, there is a camera mounted on the front of the robot, so the operator is able to see where the robot is going, along with a second camera mounted on the actuator arm to provide a wider view of the surrounding area.
Whilst the technology has become smaller and more robust, bomb disposal robots are still tracked, human-controlled robots, with an ‘arm’ that can manipulate suspect devices.
Bomb disposal robots vary in size, from the stripped-down backpack sized robots that can be carried on a soldier’s back and thrown into buildings, to the size of a ride-on lawnmower, armed with x-ray devices and explosives detectors.
Others are being developed that have two arms, providing bomb disposal robots with greater manual dexterity, such as allowing them to open car boots and look inside.
Rather than using a single robot, function-specific robots are also being developed.
Bureau Of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms And Explosives
Program Description: In 1999, ATF explosive experts recognized a disturbing fact: Bomb technicians in the United States were more likely to be killed or injured while conducting an explosives disposal operation than any other mission, including attempting to render safe an improvised explosive device.
Numerous bomb squad accident investigations conducted by ATF revealed that additional training was the single most effective way to attempt any reduction in the number of these accidents.
In response to this need, the ATF Office of Training and Professional Development, in cooperation with the ATF Explosives Technology Branch, developed the AEDT training program for bomb technicians and explosives specialists.
AEDT provides in depth classroom and range instruction in virtually every aspect of explosives disposal.
ATF provides travel and lodging in addition to training, classroom materials and range tools.
Students are also reimbursed a daily per diem rate as determined by GSA. The course is delivered at the ATF Explosives Training Branch located on Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama.
Prerequisites for Attendance: Applicant must be a full time public safety official trained as a Bomb Technician and whose mission includes destruction/disposal of explosive materials.
Army Bomb Disposal
The British Army’s 29 EOD and Search Group carries out Explosive Ordinance Disposal and advanced search operations in the UK and around the world.
This elite group of bomb disposal experts protect the UK domestic population and troops deployed overseas by detecting and disposing of mines, unexploded ammunition and improvised explosive devices.
11 EOD Regiment is a Royal Logistic Corps regiment that is based in various locations around the U.K. Their role includes providing counter terrorist EOD support to civilian authorities.
In May 1972, 2 Special Boat Squadron Marines, a soldier from 22 SAS and a Royal Army Ordnance Corps bomb disposal expert parachuted into the Atantic and boarded the QE2 in response to a bomb threat made against the liner and its passengers.
The bomb disposal expert had never made a military jump before.
The bomb displosal expert survived the jump, and no bombs were found on the liner.
The incident highlighted the need for bomb disposal operatives with sufficient training to operate in the maritime domain.
Post Idea #14: Gastroparesis
Related Articles – Summarized
Symptoms And Causes
Gastroparesis is a condition that affects the normal spontaneous movement of the muscles in your stomach.
If you have gastroparesis, your stomach’s motility is slowed down or doesn’t work at all, preventing your stomach from emptying properly.
Gastroparesis can interfere with normal digestion, cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
Many people with gastroparesis don’t have any noticeable signs and symptoms.
It’s not always clear what leads to gastroparesis, but in some cases it can be caused by damage to a nerve that controls the stomach muscles.
The vagus nerve helps manage the complex processes in your digestive tract, including signaling the muscles in your stomach to contract and push food into the small intestine.
Although gastroparesis doesn’t cause diabetes, frequent changes in the rate and amount of food passing into the small bowel can cause erratic changes in blood sugar levels.
Gastroparesis
The symptoms of gastroparesis may include feeling full shortly after starting a meal, feeling full long after eating a meal, nausea, and vomiting.
Diabetes is the most common known cause of gastroparesis.
Doctors diagnose gastroparesis based on your medical history, a physical exam, symptoms, and medical tests, such as tests to measure stomach emptying.
Your doctor may use medical tests to look for gastroparesis complications.
How doctors treat gastroparesis depends on the cause, how bad your symptoms and complications are, and how well you respond to different treatments.
What you eat can help relieve gastroparesis symptoms.
What you eat can also help make sure you get the right amount of nutrients, calories, and liquids if you are malnourished or dehydrated due to gastroparesis.
Genetic And Rare Diseases Information Center
Most individuals with gastroparesis have persistent nausea that worsens after eating and may be associated with vomiting and abdominal pain.
Studies evaluating the quality of life of individuals with gastroparesis have reported decreased physical and social functioning and reduced overall well-being.
About 1 in 10 patients with gastroparesis is considered disabled.
As a result of the recurrent vomiting and decreased oral intake, patients with gastroparesis can develop dehydration and electrolyte abnormalities including low potassium levels and imbalances in the acid/base status of the blood.
Some patients with gastroparesis are also at increased risk of blood clots.
In rare, severe cases of gastroparesis, patients may develop a bezoar, a mass of poorly digested food that forms in the stomach.
Although many people can live a relatively normal life with proper management of gastroparesis, some of the medical treatments are not tolerated by patients, and management options are limited.
Gastroparesis: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment
People who have both diabetes and gastroparesis may have other problems as well, because blood glucose levels rise quickly when food finally leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine.
Reglan: You take this drug before you eat, and it causes your stomach muscles to contract to help move food out of your stomach.
Erythromycin: This is an antibiotic that also causes stomach contractions and helps move food out.
One type of surgery for gastroparesis is gastric electrical stimulation, which is a treatment that sends mild electric shocks to the stomach muscles.
Another surgery to relieve gastroparesis symptoms is gastric bypass, in which a small pouch is created from the top part of the stomach.
The doctor then cuts the pylorus, the valve that empties the stomach, which allows food to move from the stomach to the small intestine more easily.
The Gastroparesis Clinic is part of the Digestive Disease & Surgery Institute at Cleveland Clinic, and offers a multidisciplinary approach to gastroparesis to increase treatment success and improve patient experience.
Johns Hopkins Medicine
Your doctor will also look for signs of underlying diseases or disorders that may be causing the gastroparesis.
During the physical exam, your doctor may listen for a “Succession splash.” The doctor will gently shake you and listen for the sound of fluid in your body.
Your doctor will most likely perform an upper endoscopy to rule out a mechanical obstruction at the outlet of the stomach, also called the pylorus.
Your doctor can determine if there are delays in the liquid emptying from your stomach.
A gastric emptying test may show a delay in emptying, which can help your doctors to make the diagnosis.
Your doctor inserts a catheter through your mouth and into your stomach.
The doctor sees the data, and you return to your doctor after a few days to review the results.
American College Of Gastroenterology
Gastroparesis is a chronic disorder which means delayed stomach emptying without a blockage.
In healthy people, when the stomach is functioning normally, contractions of the stomach help to crush ingested food and then propel the pulverized food into the small intestine where further digestion and absorption of nutrients occurs.
With imaging equipment, it measures the rate of emptying of the stomach after taking a meal.
A delay in gastric emptying indicates gastroparesis.
13 C spirulina Gastric Emptying Breath Test is a non radioactive test to evaluate for gastroparesis.
A small tube is inserted in the stomach where the surgery occurs.
There are additional experimental options that your doctor may discuss with you including surgically placing an electric stimulation device on your stomach.
Gastroparesis Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, And Treatment
Gastroparesis is a condition in which food stays in your stomach for longer than it should.
If food stays in your stomach too long and ferments, which can lead to the growth of bacteria.
Your blood sugar levels may rise when food finally leaves your stomach and enters your small intestine.
If more than 10% of food is still in your stomach 4 hours after eating, you have gastroparesis.
It causes your stomach muscles to contract and move food along.
Erythromycin: This antibiotic also causes stomach contractions and helps move food out.
Electrical stimulation uses electrodes attached to your stomach wall to trigger stomach contractions.

Six Basics For General Managers
If the general manager sets high standards, key managers will usually follow suit.
High standards are thus the principal means by which top general managers exert their influence and leverage their talents across the entire business.
Like top coaches, military leaders, or symphony conductors, top general managers set a personal example in terms of the long hours they work, their obvious commitment to success, and the consistent quality of their efforts.
One general manager asks key managers to rank subordinates yearly on a scale from one to nine.
One aggressive, growth-oriented company decided it needed: a mix of high-potential managers, not a few good managers at the top with implementers below; innovative managers who act like owners, not administrators content to pass decisions up the line; and ambitious quick learners, not people content to move slowly up the corporate ladder.
To determine what does apply, a GM focuses on two questions: What kind of managers do we need to compete effectively, now and in the foreseeable future? What do we have to do to attract, motivate, and keep these people? GMs who ask these questions consistently and act on the answers end up with more high-impact managers than those who haven’t given much attention to the mix of skills and styles it takes to win their particular battles.
All general managers say they allocate resources to support competitive strategies, keep the company economically healthy, and produce high returns.

What Is Energy Transition?
As more investors and companies seek greater clarity and confidence in accounting for long-term climate risks and opportunities, businesses are adapting to the “Energy transition” – a transformation of the global energy sector from fossil-based systems of energy production and consumption to renewable energy sources.
Switching from nonrenewable energy sources like oil, natural gas, and coal to renewable energy is made possible by technological advancements and a societal push toward sustainability.
Spurred by structural, permanent changes to energy supply, demand, and prices, the energy transition also aims to reduce energy-related greenhouse gas emissions through various forms of decarbonization.
Although federal subsidies for wind and solar energy are set to expire, the demand for renewable energy, driven primarily by corporations’ large-scale renewable energy purchases, will likely remain high.
Demand has already been secured through initiatives such as the RE100 coalition, under which large companies have committed to source 100% of their power from renewable sources, and the Renewable Energy Buyers Alliance, which was launched by over 300 companies including Facebook Inc., Google LLC, Walmart Inc., and General Motors Co. Generating power from renewables is only part of the energy transition.
Another central factor for renewable energy and electrification is renewable energy storage, which could solve the production problems many renewable energy technologies face.
Though long seen as the missing link between intermittent renewable power and constant reliability, energy storage has begun playing a broader role in the energy transition, with the potential to enable the eventual decarbonization of energy systems.
A Beginner’S Guide To The Energy Transition In Five Steps
For that matter, we recently launched a briefing note, called Energy Transition 101, which goes ‘back to basics’ on the what, why, when, where, who and how of the energy transition.
Although the current energy transition is mainly driven by environmental sustainability concerns, it will only succeed if it simultaneously provides energy security and access, and facilitates economic growth and development.
In other words, a successful energy transition needs to balance the energy triangle.
A successful energy transition needs to include solutions for the remaining 47% of energy-related CO2 emissions.
A) Increasing energy efficiency: among all the primary energy used, only 33% is converted into useful energy.
As the IEA states, energy efficiency is one of the best solutions towards building an inclusive, sustainable, affordable and secure energy system.
C) Capturing unavoidable emissions: there will be instances where increased energy efficiency or alternative low-carbon energy sources are not viable.

International collaborationGE supports the science and goals expressed in the Paris Agreement to reduce global carbon emissions.
We joined top companies in calling for an ambitious U.S. climate policy and supported the first-ever global standards regulating aircraft greenhouse gas emissions.
Following this announcement, we are continuing to focus and invest in our core renewable energy and power generation businesses, working to make electricity more sustainable, affordable, reliable and accessible and helping customers to reduce their emissions.
Advancing the global energy transition Tackling the urgent global priority that is climate change will require solving the energy trilemma of economic development, reliability and sustainability.
A cleaner energy future will be achieved through a combination of lowering emissions today – growing renewables, coal-to-gas switching and modernizing digital and physical grid assets – and innovating in breakthrough technologies.
GE has the ability to drive significant change because of its size and scale, and we are investing in a range of decarbonization technologies, including cost-effectively scaling renewables, such as wind power; moving toward net zero gas power with hydrogen and carbon capture technologies; modernizing and digitizing the grid; advancing carbon-free nuclear power generation; and researching hybrid and electric flight.

Energy Transition
Energy transition is a significant structural change in an energy system.
The current transition to renewable energy, and perhaps other types of sustainable energy, differs as it is largely driven by a recognition that global carbon emissions must be brought to zero, and since fossil fuels are the largest single source of carbon emissions, the quantity of fossil fuels that can be produced is limited by the COP21 Paris Agreement of 2015 to keep global warming below 1.5 °C. In recent years, the term energy transition has been coined in the framework of a move towards sustainability through increased integration of renewable energy in the realm of daily life.
An example of transition toward sustainable energy is the shift by Germany and Switzerland, to decentralized renewable energy, and energy efficiency.
Although so far these shifts have been replacing nuclear energy, their declared goal was the coal phase-out, reducing non-renewable energy sources and the creation of an energy system based on 60% renewable energy by 2050.
In a broader sense the energy transition could also entail a democratization of energy or a move towards increased sustainability.
Co-benefits describe the positive side-effects that occur from an energy transition and can be defined as: “Simultaneously meeting several interests or objectives resulting from a political intervention, private sector investment or a mix thereof. Opportunistic co-benefits appear as auxiliary or side effect while focusing on a central objective or interest. Strategic co-benefits result from a deliberate effort to seizing several opportunities with a single purposeful intervention.” Especially the deployment of renewable energies can have positive socio-economic effects on employment, industrial development, health and energy access.
It was popularised by US President Jimmy Carter in his 18 April 1977 televised speech from the Oval Office, calling to “Look back into history to understand our energy problem. Twice in the last several hundred years, there has been a transition in the way people use energy … Because we are now running out of gas and oil, we must prepare quickly for a third change-to strict conservation and to the renewed use of coal and to permanent renewable energy sources like solar power.” As historian Duccio Basosi underlines, the term was later globalised after the 1979 second oil shock, during the 1981 United Nations in Nairobi, on new and renewable sources of energy.

In the two decades since the first edition of Comprehensive Polymer Science, impressive advances have been made regarding new methods for the synthesis of polymers from vinyl monomers.
Such advances include the controlled/living polymerization of vinyl monomers, the synthesis of new vinyl polymer architectures, the incorporation of functional groups in vinyl polymers, and the control of molecular weight and polymer end-groups.
Is a name often used to identify polymers based on the vinyl group, NCH=CH2, but really has been used to identify polymers and copolymers of vinyl chloride.
Polymers do not exhibit optical activity if the chiral centre is in the main chain, since, effectively, the groups forming the polymer chain on either side of the chiral centre are practically identical.
Branches are an integral part of other polymers such as star polymers and dendrimers.
1-67 yields polymers in which every other carbon atom in the chain is a site of steric isomerism.
The configurational nature of a vinyl polymer has profound effects on its physical properties when the configurations of the pseudoasymmetric carbons are regular and the polymer is crystallizable.
Vinyl Polymer
Vinyl polymers are a group of polymers derived from substituted vinyl monomers of the type CH2=CHR. Their backbone is an extended alkane chain …-CH2-CHR-CH2-CHR-.
In popular usage, “Vinyl” refers only to polyvinyl chloride.
Ziegler-Natta catalyst is a typical commercial catalyst for polyethylene and polypropylene.
Vinyl Polymers
Vinyl polymers are polymers made from vinyl monomers; that is, small molecules containing carbon-carbon double bonds.
Let’s see how we get from a vinyl monomer to a vinyl polymer using for an example the simplest vinyl polymer, polyethylene.
When polymerized, the ethylene molecules are joined along the axes of their double bonds, to form a long chain of many thousands of carbon atoms containing only single bonds between atoms.
More sophisticated vinyl polymers are made from monomers in which one or more of the hydrogen atoms of ethylene has been replaced by another atom or groups of atoms.
Let’s see what we can do by replacing just one of those hydrogen atoms.
Replacing two hydrogen atoms, on the same carbon atom, we can get polyisobutylene, which is type of rubber.
Not many monomers in which hydrogen atoms have been replaced on both carbon atoms will polymerize.
What’S The Difference Between Vinyl And Polymer Siding?
Vinyl siding is made of polyvinyl chloride, aka PVC. Meanwhile, polymer siding is made from polypropylene resin.
The process of making polymer siding is environmentally friendly, and the molding involved in making the siding allows for the material to easily mimic other materials such as wood.
Now that you have a better understanding of the core differences between the two siding options, it’s time to look at the benefits of each one, starting with standard vinyl siding.
Polymer siding offers most of the same benefits as vinyl siding.
Stronger: Because of chemical makeup of polymer siding, it can be stronger than standard vinyl siding of the same thickness.
Environmentally Friendly: While both vinyl and polymer siding products are recyclable after they’ve been produced and used as siding materials, polymer siding is more eco-friendly during the production process.
There are more options available with insulated vinyl siding than insulated polymer siding.
What Is Vinyl? What Is Polyvinyl Chloride?
Like all plastic materials, PVC/vinyl results from a series of processing steps that convert hydrocarbon-based raw materials into unique synthetic products called polymers.
The vinyl polymer is unusual because it is based only in part on hydrocarbon feedstocks: ethylene obtained by processing, or cracking, natural gas or petroleum.
The other half of the vinyl polymer is based on the natural element chlorine.
Thus, vinyl is less sensitive to fluctuations in the world oil market than are totally oil dependent polymers.
These properties are passed on directly to vinyl end-products, making vinyl an excellent choice for applications such as electrical conduit and wiring that require high resistance to ignition and flame spread. From Monomer to Polymer Product.
Through a chemical reaction, ethylene and chlorine combine to form ethylene dichloride which, in turn, is transformed into a gas called vinyl chloride monomer.
A final step, called “Polymerization,” converts the monomer into vinyl polymer, a fine-grained, white powder or resin known as polyvinyl chloride, or simply “Vinyl.”
Is Polymer A Vinyl?
Vinyl polymers are a group of polymers derived from vinyl monomers.
You may ask, is polymer the same as vinyl?
Vinyl and polymer siding are both, essentially, plastic.
Vinyl siding is made from polyvinyl chloride while polymer siding is made from polypropylene resin.
Is vinyl a type of plastic? Vinyl is not a natural substance but is a synthetic man-made material.
Vinyl polymers are polymers made from vinyl monomers; that is, small molecules containing carbon-carbon double bonds.
Through polymerization, vinyl chloride monomers combine to form the polymer polyvinyl chloride – one of the oldest synthetic materials, and an abundantly used form of plastic.

Canadian Medical Association, Euthanasia & Assisted Suicide Part I: Preliminaries To Carter
In December, 2013, the Canadian Medical Association Board of Directors decided to shape the debate and law concerning euthanasia and assisted suicide and revisit CMA policy opposing physician participation in the procedures.
Part II begins on the eve of the Supreme Court of Canada decision in Carter in February, 2015 and concludes in the fall of 2015 with the approval of the CMA’s draft framework for providing euthanasia and assisted suicide.
The Canadian Medical Association supports the right of all physicians, within the bounds of existing legislation, to follow their conscience when deciding whether to provide medical aid in dying as defined in CMA’s policy on euthanasia and assisted suicide.
CMA’s current policy on euthanasia and assisted suicide suggests that Canadian physicians should not participate in assisted death.
CMA Board approves euthanasia and assisted suicide Policy against euthanasia and assisted suicide reversed.
In December, 2014, while the country awaited the decision of the Supreme Court in Carter, the CMA Board approved a change in Association policy on euthanasia and assisted suicide, renaming it “Euthanasia and Assisted Death.” When the revised policy was published, the CMA issued a statement that it “And other changes to the CMA’s approach to end-of-life care issues … codify resolutions adopted by delegates at the association’s annual meeting in August.”
By formally approving physician assisted suicide and euthanasia rather than adopting a neutral position, and by committing the CMA to support patients’s access to physician assisted suicide and euthanasia under conditions set by law, the Board implicitly agreed that, in some circumstances, physicians have a professional obligation to kill patients or to help them kill themselves.

Page 19 HDRA – the organic organisation Organic Farming International standards The International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements has produced a set of international organic standards, laid down by people from many countries.
Organic Farming
Organic agricultural methods are internationally regulated and legally enforced by many nations, based in large part on the standards set by the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements, an international umbrella organization for organic farming organizations established in 1972.
Although opposition to the use of any transgenic technologies in organic farming is strong, agricultural researchers Luis Herrera-Estrella and Ariel Alvarez-Morales continue to advocate integration of transgenic technologies into organic farming as the optimal means to sustainable agriculture, particularly in the developing world.
A long-term field study comparing organic/conventional agriculture carried out over 21 years in Switzerland concluded that “Crop yields of the organic systems averaged over 21 experimental years at 80% of the conventional ones. The fertilizer input was 34 – 51% lower, indicating an efficient production. The organic farming systems used 20 – 56% less energy to produce a crop unit and per land area this difference was 36 – 53%. In spite of the considerably lower pesticide input the quality of organic products was hardly discernible from conventional analytically and even came off better in food preference trials and picture creating methods.”
“Farm comparisons show that actual leaching rates per hectare are up to 57% lower on organic than on conventional fields. However, the leaching rates per unit of output were similar or slightly higher.” “On a per-hectare scale, the CO2 emissions are 40 – 60% lower in organic farming systems than in conventional ones, whereas on a per-unit output scale, the CO2 emissions tend to be higher in organic farming systems.”
Proponents of organic farming have claimed that organic agriculture emphasizes closed nutrient cycles, biodiversity, and effective soil management providing the capacity to mitigate and even reverse the effects of climate change and that organic agriculture can decrease fossil fuel emissions.
Organic farming can build up soil organic matter better than conventional no-till farming, which suggests long-term yield benefits from organic farming.
The organic farming concept in Denmark is often not limited to organic farming as the definition is globally.
Organic Farming- Meaning, Types, Advantages, Importance, Limitations
Organic farming can be defined as an agricultural process that uses biological fertilisers and pest control acquired from animal or plant waste.
In other words, organic farming is a new system of farming or agriculture that repairs, maintains, and improves the ecological balance.
Environment-friendly: The farming of organic products is free of chemicals and fertilisers, so it does not harm the environment.
Incompetent: The major issue of organic farming is the lack of inadequate infrastructure and marketing of the product.
Less production: The products obtained through organic farming are less in the initial years as compared to that in chemical products.
Pure organic farming means avoiding all unnatural chemicals.
Integrated organic farming includes the integration of pest management and nutrients management to achieve ecological requirements and demands.
What Is Organic Farming?
For many years, organic producers and proponents have claimed that organic farming is gentler on the environment.
The Sustainable Agriculture Farming Systems project at the University of California-Davis, a 12-year research station experiment comparing conventional and organic systems, showed water infiltration rates to be 50 percent higher in the organic system.
A SARE-funded study evaluating pesticide and nutrient loads in subsurface drainage on organic and conventional farms in Illinois found less nitrate, chloride and atrazine in the water draining from the organic fields.
An article published in the Organic Farming Research Foundation Bulletin reviewing data from seven universities and two research station experiments verified that organic corn, soybean and wheat yielded, on average, 95 percent of conventional.
The largest organic cooperative in the country, Organic Valley, has more than 500 organic farmer-members across 13 states and successfully markets organic dairy products, beef, pork and poultry.
For many farmers, a driving force to convert to organic production is economic: Organic crops can fetch a price premium of anywhere from 25 percent to 200 percent or more over conventionally grown products, according to USDA’s Economic Research Service.
Said Joe Rude, an Iowa poultry and crop farmer, “It’s about trying to get the ecological system harmonious and working with it, rather than overriding it.” Farmers who turn to organic farming solely to capture market premiums often fail because it does not mean simply substituting one type of inputs for another, such as replacing a synthetic pest control with Bacillus thuringiensis or applying organic fertilizers in place of synthetic ones.

UK Developers Edge Towards Cladding Deal With Government
UK developers and housing secretary Michael Gove are nearing a deal that could resolve a large part of the building safety crisis highlighted by the 2017 fire at London’s Grenfell Tower that killed 72 people.
The housing department has estimated the costs of addressing safety issues on blocks of this height in England at £4bn and asked developers to pay, adding to an annual levy on the sector that will go towards the repair of buildings that are more than 18 metres tall.
Several developers announced on Tuesday that they had signed a pledge that commits them to fix fire-safety issues that pose a risk to life in medium and high-rise buildings they have built over the past 30 years.
Crest Nicholson, a FTSE 250 builder, said it would set aside between £80mn and £120mn for alterations to any of its mid-rise buildings that required fire safety work – substantially more than the £47.8mn it had earmarked so far to tackle the issue.
Other builders are expected to follow suit after Gove gave the sector until the end of March to come up with a fully costed plan to remediate mid-rise buildings.
One unresolved issue is who should pay to fix blocks built by developers that have gone bust or are untraceable.
Clyde Lewis, an analyst at Peel Hunt, said Crest Nicolson’s announcement was a sign that the sector was coming closer to accounting for the crisis, but that costs would vary considerably between builders.

Housebuilder Crest Nicholson has revealed another hit of up to £120m after signing up to the Government’s new Building Safety Pledge in the wake of the Grenfell Tower tragedy – PA Wire.
The group said it is signing up to the Government’s new Building Safety Pledge, which commits developers to new guidelines for work on potentially unsafe cladding on buildings between 36ft and 59ft high.
Fellow building giant Persimmon also confirmed it has signed up to the new building safety guidelines, but said it believes the £75 million already set aside by the group will be enough to cover the costs.
Housebuilders had until April 5 to sign the Building Safety Pledge guidelines.
Crest said it believes signing the Building Safety Pledge is “In the best interests of the group, taking further steps to support those living in affected buildings”.
“Dean Finch, group chief executive at Persimmon, said:”Over a year ago we said that leaseholders in multi-storey buildings Persimmon constructed should not have to pay for the remediation of cladding and fire related issues.
Crest Nicholson PLC Counts The Cost Of Signing The Building Safety Pledge
The deadline for signing the pledge is today and coincidentally most of the big players in the sector are weaker today.
Crest Nicholson Holdings PLC shares dipped on Tuesday morning as the housebuilder said signing the Building Safety Pledge would likely cost it £80-120mln.
Persimmon PLC, the biggest company in the sector, has also signed the pledge, which sets out the industry’s commitments to remove cladding and remediate fire safety issues in buildings over 11 metres in height.
Persimmon signs Building Safety Pledge: says £75m already set aside is enough to remediate fire safety issues on all buildings over 11 metres they developed in the 30 years leading up to today.
Sector peers are also on the slide; Barratt Developments PLC is down 3.0%; Bellway PLC is 1.1% lighter; Berkeley Group Holdings PLC is off 0.9%; Taylor Wimpey PLC is 1.9% lower and Vistry PLC is 1.7% cheaper.
Persimmon PLC is up 0.6% after it said it still believes the £75mln it has earmarked for the rectification works remains sufficient.
“Housing developers have until today to sign the government’s Building Safety Pledge for ending the cladding crisis”.

Oncolytic Viruses: A New Class Of Immunotherapy Drugs
Oncolytic viruses represent a new class of therapeutic agents that promote anti-tumour responses through a dual mechanism of action that is dependent on selective tumour cell killing and the induction of systemic anti-tumour immunity.
The molecular and cellular mechanisms of action are not fully elucidated but are likely to depend on viral replication within transformed cells, induction of primary cell death, interaction with tumour cell antiviral elements and initiation of innate and adaptive anti-tumour immunity.
A variety of native and genetically modified viruses have been developed as oncolytic agents, and the approval of the first oncolytic virus by the US Food and Drug Administration is anticipated in the near future.
This Review provides a comprehensive overview of the basic biology supporting oncolytic viruses as cancer therapeutic agents, describes oncolytic viruses in advanced clinical trials and discusses the unique challenges in the development of oncolytic viruses as a new class of drugs for the treatment of cancer.
Oncolytic Virus
An oncolytic virus is a virus that preferentially infects and kills cancer cells.
In 2015, talimogene laherparepvec, an oncolytic herpes virus which is a modified herpes simplex virus, became the first oncolytic virus to be approved for use in the U.S. and European Union, for the treatment of advanced inoperable melanoma.
Since vaccinia virus has long been recognized as an ideal backbone for vaccines due to its potent antigen presentation capability, this combines well with its natural oncolytic activities as an oncolytic virus for cancer immunotherapy.
Semliki Forest virus is a virus that naturally infects cells of the central nervous system and causes encephalitis.
Non-transductional targeting involves altering the genome of the virus so it can only replicate in cancer cells, most frequently as part of the attenuation of the virus.
A modified oncolytic vaccinia virus encoding a single-chain anti-VEGF antibody was shown to have significantly enhanced antitumor activities than parental virus in animal models.
In science fiction, the concept of an oncolytic virus was first introduced to the public in Jack Williamson’s novel Dragon’s Island, published in 1951, although Williamson’s imaginary virus was based on a bacteriophage rather than a mammalian virus.
Using Oncolytic Viruses To Treat Cancer
Known as oncolytic viruses, this group includes viruses found in nature as well as viruses modified in the laboratory to reproduce efficiently in cancer cells without harming healthy cells.
To date, only one oncolytic virus-a genetically modified form of a herpesvirus for treating melanoma-has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, though a number of viruses are being evaluated as potential treatments for cancer in clinical trials.
Oncolytic viruses have long been viewed as tools for directly killing cancer cells.
A growing body of research suggests that some oncolytic viruses may work-at least in part-by triggering an immune response in the body against the cancer.
Many in the field would agree that more studies are needed to learn how different oncolytic viruses work against cancer.
Today, several dozen viruses-and a few strains of bacteria-are being studied as potential cancer treatments, according to research presented at an NCI-sponsored conference on using microbes as cancer therapies in 2017.
Although the notion of using viruses in cancer therapy is old, the science only began to move forward in the 1990s with advances in genetic engineering technology, noted Matthias Gromeier, M.D., of the Duke Cancer Institute, who has led clinical trials of a genetically modified form of poliovirus.
Cancer Research Institute
Herpes simplex virus: a virus that can cause the formation of sores on or near the mouth.
Measles: a highly contagious virus that infects the respiratory tract and can cause measles.
Newcastle Disease Virus: a virus primarily found in birds; can cause mild conjunctivitis and flu-like symptoms in humans.
Picornavirus: a family of viruses that can cause a range of diseases in mammals and birds; the coxsackie virus is an example from this family that is being clinically tested.
Vaccinia virus: the virus that was used to help vaccinate against and eliminate smallpox; rarely causes illness in humans and is associated with a rash covering the body.
Vesicular stomatitis virus: a virus that belongs to the same family as the Maraba virus; can cause flu-like symptoms in humans.
In addition to these oncolytic virus platforms currently being evaluated, new platforms and approaches are constantly being developed and investigated in clinical trials.
Oncolytic Virus Therapy
A group of viruses known as oncolytic viruses are being used to treat cancer, particularly advanced metastatic melanoma.
The first oncolytic virus therapy approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of melanoma is Imlygic®.
Research on virus therapy began in earnest in the 1990s and has advanced as an immunotherapy for cancer since 2005.
Researchers are studying the use of oncolytic virus therapy for small-cell lung cancers resistant to immunotherapy alone and for brain tumors.
Oncolytic virus therapy may be given as an add-on to other treatments you’re receiving.
Trials have shown that most patients respond well to treatment with oncolytic virus therapy and tolerate it.
If oncolytic virus therapy is given before surgery for melanoma, it may enhance your body’s immune response, as well as improve the success of further treatment with a checkpoint inhibitor.

Degaussing: What Is It And How Does It Work?
Degaussing magnetic media leaves the domains in random patterns with no preference to orientation, thereby rendering previous data unrecoverable.
Simply overwriting magnetic media does not completely erase data.
Most professionals and engineers agree that a conveyor transport degausser, which allows the user to place the magnetic media on a small belt, which in turn passes the media through or over the degaussing coils at a constant speed, assures the most uniform process.
Effective degaussing is very much a performance factor of the machine and generally passing the media through the field twice does not improve the effectiveness.
Professional users in every sector, from government to business, benefit from incorporating degaussing within their magnetic media processing procedure and achieve considerable cost savings by being able to confidently reuse again and again media previously discarded.
For a start, many operators who do not currently degauss, simply throw away suspect media that, with a careful process of degaussing applied to it, would have a considerable extended life.
Volume of media: How much media do you need to degauss and in what sort of timeframe?
Degaussing
Degaussing was originally applied to reduce ships’ magnetic signatures during World War II. Degaussing is also used to reduce magnetic fields in cathode ray tube monitors and to destroy data held on magnetic storage.
Internal degaussing coils in CRTs are generally much weaker than external degaussing coils, since a better degaussing coil takes up more space.
A degausser is a device that can generate a magnetic field for degaussing magnetic storage media.
Performance of a degaussing machine is the major determinant of the effectiveness of degaussing magnetic data storage media.
Their rotating coil degausser passes the magnetic data storage media being erased through a magnetic field generated using two coils in the degaussing machine with the media on a variable-speed conveyor belt.
Pulse degaussing saves on energy costs, produces high magnetic field strength, is suitable for degaussing large assemblies, and is reliable due to zero-error degaussing achievement.
Permanent magnet degaussers require adequate shielding of the magnetic field they constantly have to prevent unintended degaussing.
What Is Degaussing?
Degaussing is one example of a method used to permanently destroy magnetic media.
Degaussing is a data destruction method that lasts a few seconds and that is typically employed on devices that include magnetic media.
According to market research firm MarketsandMarkets™, the global degaussing system market was valued at $726.8 million in 2017 and is expected to reach $981.2 million by 2023 at a compound annual growth rate of 3.92%. This report included degaussing in the vessel manufacturing industry.
Off-site degaussing services are generally carried out at a controlled and supervised facility.
You may prefer off-site degaussing if there is limited space at your workplace or home office, or if you have time limitations.
At e-End, we offer both on-site and off-site degaussing services.
Call e-End today at 240-529-1010 or contact us online to learn more about degaussing and our other data destruction services.
What Is Degauss And How Do I Do It?
A cathode ray tube monitor displays information on the screen by using a stream of electrons controlled by magnetic fields.
Nearby external magnetic forces, such as an unshielded pair of speakers or another monitor as well as the earth’s own magnetic field, can cause the image displayed by the monitor to become distorted and the colors to change.
Most of the newer monitors will automatically degauss whenever they are turned on.
Turn the monitor off, wait a few seconds and then power the monitor back on.
Move electrical devices such as speakers, radios, cellphones, or other monitors or television units away from the monitor.
Try turning the monitor 90 degrees to see if the distortion changes after a few hours which will help indicate whether external factors are an issue.
Check the monitor documentation to see if this particular model has a degauss button.
How Is Degaussing Done?
How is degaussing done? Degaussing is a process in which systems of electrical cables are installed around the circumference of ship’s hull, running from bow to stern on both sides.
How do you use degaussing? Inserting a hard drive into a drawer style degausser.
How does a degausser work? A degausser is a machine that disrupts and eliminates magnetic fields stored on tapes and disk media, removing data from devices like your hard drives.
One of the biggest questions users have after degaussing their hard drive is can a degaussed hard drive be reused? No, they cannot.
Ship degaussing is the process of making a ship’s hull nonmagnetic by producing an opposing magnetic field.
How do you degauss a TV? Use the TVs built-in degaussing feature several times.
Degaussing is a unique technique of the permanent deletion of data applicable to memory devices based on a magnetic media.
Why Use A Degausser And Degausser FAQs
Basically, higher Oe media requires stronger degausser magnetic field ratings.
To understand how a degausser works, one must first understand how information is first recorded onto hard drives, tapes, reels, cassettes and other magnetic media.
Data is recorded using binary code, a series of 1s and 0s. A degausser erases by generating a magnetic field so powerful that it permanently removes the magnetic properties from the iron oxide or chromium dioxide coatings which erases, or randomizes, the recorded data pattern.
With so many different degausser models on the market, it’s important to know what to look for when choosing a right model for your needs as not all degaussers are created equally.
The most important aspect to consider when shopping for a degausser is its ability to erase your media.
The magnetic field strength of a degausser is measured in gauss, or oersteds.
At Data Security, Inc., we can help you identify the correct degausser based upon your media sanitization needs.

An Introduction To Robot Operating System
The Robot Operating System is not an actual operating system, but a framework and set of tools that provide functionality of an operating system on a heterogeneous computer cluster.
First of all, we’ll make a simple program connect to a simple simulation, just to demonstrate basic principles of ROS. We will attach a gamepad to a computer and try to design a good control scheme for turning gamepad input into control signals for a robot.
ROS has several powerful tools for inspecting what is happening in the system.
ROS has a lot more GUI and terminal tools, but those are out of our scope for this introduction.
Rosrun can run nodes via rosrun
The node stageros within the stage ros package allows us to run one robot within a 2D stage defined via an image.
Many robot platforms have drivers that generate these types of messages, and ROS has nodes that take a webcam and publish an image feed.
Robot Operating System
Although ROS is not an operating system but a set of software frameworks for robot software development, it provides services designed for a heterogeneous computer cluster such as hardware abstraction, low-level device control, implementation of commonly used functionality, message-passing between processes, and package management.
Despite the importance of reactivity and low latency in robot control, ROS is not a real-time operating system.
The lack of support for real-time systems has been addressed in the creation of ROS 2, a major revision of the ROS API which will take advantage of modern libraries and technologies for core ROS functions and add support for real-time code and embedded system hardware.
2011 was a banner year for ROS with the launch of ROS Answers, a Q/A forum for ROS users, on 15 February; the introduction of the highly successful TurtleBot robot kit on 18 April; and the total number of ROS repositories passing 100 on 5 May. Willow Garage began 2012 by creating the Open Source Robotics Foundation in April.

Robot Operating System or simply ROS is a framework which is used by hundreds of Companies and techies of various fields all across the globe in the field of Robotics and Automation.
ROS is not an operating system but a meta operating system meaning, that it assumes there is an underlying operating system that will assist it in carrying out its tasks.
ROS demands a lot of functionality from the operating system.
On top of that ROS must be freely available to a large population, otherwise, a large population may not be able to access it.
Much of the popularity of ROS is due to its open nature and easy availability to the mass population.
There is close proximity between ROS and OS, so much so that it becomes almost necessary to know more about the operating system in order to work with ROS. Using Linux as a newbie can be a challenge, One is bound to run in issues with Linux especially when working with ROS, and a good knowledge of Linux will be helpful to avert/fix these issues.
The most popular simulator to work with ROS is Gazebo.
ROS 101: An Intro To The Robot Operating System
There are currently over 3,000 software component packages contributed by the Open Robotics community, creating thriving ecosystem for ROS. Although ROS is not operating system in the vein of Windows 10 or Linux, the software development platform provides a system of nodes that allows interprocesses to occur within the target’s intelligent platform.
The architecture of a ROS system consists of five components: a ROS Master, nodes, publishers, subscribers, and topics.
The ROS Master is responsible for managing names and registration services to the nodes within a ROS system.
The ROS Master also enables location and communication between nodes within the robotics system.
An executable file within the ROS system to allow communication among another node.
The Arduino Uno will be functioning as a publisher whereby the chatter topic will be advertised through the ROS system.
Information on ROS, ros lib, the system model, and using the Arduino Uno can be found on the ROS.org website.
Robot Operating System Explained!
Is Robot Operating System a new operating system for robots?
Those new to ROS might think that it is a similar operating system as the aforementioned operating systems.
ROS is the abbreviation for Robot Operating System, so it would be safe to say it is an operating system.
ROS is not a conventional operating system such as Windows, Linux, and Android, but a meta-operating system that runs on the existing operating system.
After completing ROS installation on top Linux, features provided by the conventional operating system such as process management system, file system, user interface, and program utility can be used.
As described in Figure 2-1, ROS is a supporting system for controlling a robot and sensor with a hardware abstraction and developing robot applications based on conventional operating systems.
ROS data communication is supported not only by a single operating system but also by multiple operating systems, hardware, and programs, making it ideal for robot development involving a variety of hardware.

Short-term bonds mature in one to three years, while long-term bonds won’t mature for more than a decade.
Given the tax benefits, the interest rate for tax-exempt municipal bonds is usually lower than on taxable fixed-income securities such as corporate bonds with similar maturities, credit qualities and other items.
Many municipal bonds are “Callable,” so investors who want to hold a municipal bond to maturity should research the bond’s call provisions before making a purchase.
Credit ratings seek to estimate the relative credit risk of a bond as compared with other bonds, although a high rating does not reflect a prediction that the bond has no chance of defaulting.
The bond’s market price will move up as interest rates move down and it will decline as interest rates rise, so that the market value of the bond may be more or less than the par value.
Many investors buy municipal bonds to hold them rather than to trade them, so the market for a particular bond may not be especially liquid and quoted prices for the same bond may differ.
Consider consulting a tax professional to discuss the bond’s tax implications, including the possibility that your bond may be subject to the federal alternative minimum tax or eligible for state income tax benefits.
Municipal Bond Definition
A municipal bond is a debt security issued by a state, municipality, or county to finance its capital expenditures, including the construction of highways, bridges, or schools.
A municipal bond is a debt obligation issued by a nonprofit organization, a private-sector corporation, or another public entity using the loan for public projects such as constructing schools, hospitals, and highways.
Types of Municipal Bonds A municipal bond is categorized based on the source of its interest payments and principal repayments.
As a fixed-income security, the market price of a municipal bond fluctuates with changes in interest rates: When interest rates rise, bond prices decline; when interest rates decline, bond prices rise.
A bond with a longer maturity is more susceptible to interest rate changes than a bond with a shorter maturity, causing even greater changes in the municipal bond investor’s income.
The majority of municipal bonds are illiquid; an investor needing immediate cash has to sell other securities instead. Many municipal bonds carry call provisions, allowing the issuer to redeem the bond prior to the maturity date.
An issuer typically calls a bond when interest rates drop and reissues municipal bonds at a lower interest rate.
Municipal Bonds
In general, municipal bonds fall into one of two categories-general obligation or revenue bonds.
General obligation bonds General obligation bonds are issued by governmental entities but are not backed by revenues from a specific project, such as a toll road. Some general obligation bonds are backed by dedicated taxes on property, while others can be payable from general funds.
Taxable municipal bonds The interest on some municipal bonds is taxable because the federal government will not subsidize the financing of activities that do not provide significant benefit to the public.
Zero-coupon bonds Zero-coupon municipal bonds are issued at an original issue discount, with the full value, including accrued interest, paid at maturity.
Original-issue discount bonds These are municipal bonds issued at a price below face value which qualify for special treatment under federal tax law.
Pre-refunded bonds Pre-refunded bonds result from the advance refunding of bonds that are not currently redeemable.
Conduit bonds These are revenue bonds issued by municipal agencies called “Conduit issuers” that are third-party entities that act on behalf of the actual borrowers, typically private nonprofit(3 entities.
Overview, Types And Uses, Risks
A municipal bond refers a bond or fixed income security that is issued by a government municipality, township, or state to finance its governmental projects.
Municipal bonds are also referred to as “Muni bonds” or “Muni.”
The advantage of municipal bonds for investors is the fact that they are tax-exempt, meaning that the returns from such bonds are not subject to taxes.
Convertible bonds – The bond is convertible into a stock at the discretion of the investor.
Callable Bond.A callable bond is a type of bond that provides the issuer of the bond with the right, but not the obligation, to redeem the bond before its maturity date.
Although municipal bonds are fairly safe bonds with little default risk, they are not backed by the federal government and can default from time-to-time.
General Obligation Bond.A general obligation bond is a type of municipal bond in which the bond repayments are guaranteed by the total revenue generated by the relevant government entity or agency.

Municipal Bonds
When considering an investment in municipal bonds, bear in mind that no two municipal bonds are created equal-and carefully evaluate each investment, being sure to obtain up-to-date information about both the bond and its issuer.
As a general category, municipal bonds tend to be more sensitive to forces of supply and demand than other fixed-income categories.
The primary reason most individual investors buy municipal bonds is because they afford favorable tax treatment on the interest an investor earns.
Interest on the vast majority of municipal bonds is free of federal income tax.
Taxable municipal bonds may be issued to finance projects that the federal government won’t subsidize.
To compensate investors for their lack of a tax break, these bonds tend to offer yields higher than tax-exempt municipal bonds, and more in line with rates of corporate or agency bonds.
Investors who purchase “Private activity” municipal bonds-bonds that are not exclusively used for government functions-may be subject to the AMT. Unlike other municipal bonds-including 501(c)(3) private activity bonds-interest earned on these “Private activity bonds” cannot be deducted according to AMT rules and may trigger an AMT payment.
Money has piled into municipal bonds, known as muni bonds or “Munis,” as investors aim to lower risk and reduce taxes.
If you’re eager to buy muni bonds with higher yields, you may have the chance to buy assets at a lower price, he said.
The tax benefits of muni bonds continue to shine, as the assets generally enjoy no federal tax on interest, and avoid state and local levies on yields, depending on where investors live.
Although muni bonds may offer lower interest than a corporate bond with similar credit risk, the pre-tax yields may be deceiving.
Let’s say you’re in the 35% tax bracket, comparing an 8% corporate bond to a 5.25% muni bond.
Crafting a muni bond portfolio isn’t easy, even for advisors, who may rely on institutional muni bond managers to adjust holdings based on interest rates, credit quality changes and more.
Muni bond issuers may “Call” the asset, paying it off before maturity, when interest rates drop.
