The genus Cannabis contains two species which produce useful amounts of psychoactive cannabinoids: Cannabis indica and Cannabis sativa, which are listed as Schedule I medicinal plants in the US; a third species, Cannabis ruderalis, has few psychogenic properties.
The FDA issued a 2006 advisory against smoked medical cannabis stating: “Marijuana has a high potential for abuse, has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and has a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision.”
The Ancient Greeks used cannabis to dress wounds and sores on their horses, and in humans, dried leaves of cannabis were used to treat nose bleeds, and cannabis seeds were used to expel tapeworms.
In the United States, the medical use of cannabis further declined with the passage of the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, which imposed new regulations and fees on physicians prescribing cannabis.
The authors of a report on a 2011 survey of medical cannabis users say that critics have suggested that some users “Game the system” to obtain medical cannabis ostensibly for treatment of a condition, but then use it for nonmedical purposes – though the truth of this claim is hard to measure.
Medical cannabis research includes any medical research on using cannabis as a treatment for any medical condition.
For reasons including increased popular support of cannabis use, a trend of cannabis legalization, and the perception of medical usefulness, more scientists are doing medical cannabis research.
Medical Marijuana
There are few subjects that can stir up stronger emotions among doctors, scientists, researchers, policy makers, and the public than medical marijuana.
Is it safe? Should it be legal? Decriminalized? Has its effectiveness been proven? What conditions is it useful for? Is it addictive? How do we keep it out of the hands of teenagers? Is it really the “Wonder drug” that people claim it is? Is medical marijuana just a ploy to legalize marijuana in general?
The Obama administration did not make prosecuting medical marijuana even a minor priority.
The most common use for medical marijuana in the United States is for pain control.
Medical marijuana is also reported to help patients suffering from pain and wasting syndrome associated with HIV, as well as irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease.
This is not intended to be an inclusive list, but rather to give a brief survey of the types of conditions for which medical marijuana can provide relief.
My advice for doctors is that whether you are pro, neutral, or against medical marijuana, patients are embracing it, and although we don’t have rigorous studies and “Gold standard” proof of the benefits and risks of medical marijuana, we need to learn about it, be open-minded, and above all, be non-judgmental.
Medical Marijuana Program
The Pennsylvania Department of Health is in the process of implementing the state’s Medical Marijuana Program, signed into law on April 17, 2016.
When fully implemented, the Medical Marijuana Program will provide access to medical marijuana for patients with a serious medical condition through a safe and effective method of delivery that balances patient need for access to the latest treatments with patient care and safety.
This guide will connect you with medical marijuana resources and information for patients and caregivers, growers and processors, dispensaries, physicians, and laboratories.

How Medical Marijuana Works, And Which Conditions It Treats
While every state has laws dictating the use of medical marijuana, more than two thirds of U.S. states and the District of Columbia have actually legalized it for medical treatments and more are considering bills to do the same.
Why hasn’t more research been done? One reason is that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration considers marijuana a Schedule I drug, the same as heroin, LSD, and ecstasy, and likely to be abused and lacking in medical value.
Medical marijuana uses the marijuana plant or chemicals in it to treat diseases or conditions.
Cannabinoids – the active chemicals in medical marijuana – are similar to chemicals the body makes that are involved in appetite, memory, movement, and pain.
Relax tight muscles in people with MS.Stimulate appetite and improve weight gain in people with cancer and AIDS.Can medical marijuana help with seizure disorders?
Medical marijuana received a lot of attention a few years ago when parents said that a special form of the drug helped control seizures in their children.
Another issue is that the FDA doesn’t oversee medical marijuana like it does prescription drugs.
Medical Cannabis Patient Program
As required by the Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Act, the Illinois Department of Public Health is providing notice to the public of the annual period for submitting petitions for the addition of debilitating medical conditions to the list prescribed by Section 10 of the Act.
Beginning at 12:01AM December 1, 2021 and ending at 11:59PM December 31, 2021, IDPH will accept petitions on forms and in a manner prescribed by IDPH. The forms and instructions are available here.
As of June 22, 2021, the Medical Cannabis Patient Program is no longer mailing medical cannabis registration cards to current patients and new program applicants.
The medical cannabis registration card is now available in your medical cannabis patient account for printing or download..

What Is The Food Standards Agency?
The Food Standards Agency is an independent department of the UK Government which is responsible for monitoring the food safety and hygiene of businesses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The FSA works alongside local authorities to enforce food safety and hygiene standards upon food businesses and ensure that consumers are effectively protected.
If a food business demonstrates poor food hygiene practices, the FSA can prosecute the business, including fines, closure of the business and sometimes imprisonment.
Responsibilities of the FSA. The Food Standards Act 1999 established the Food Standards Agency, along with their functions and powers.
The designated powers of the FSA allow it to act as a food safety watchdog over food businesses.
The FSA works alongside local authorities to enforce daily food legislation, which includes speaking to food businesses who require help in enforcing their food legislation.
The FSA help to uphold food safety and hygiene standards and therefore the role of the FSA is certainly important in the food industry.
20 Years Of The Food Standards Agency
My career at the Food Standards Agency is as old as the department itself – 20 years as of April 2020.
After a series of high-profile food incidents in the 1980s and 1990s, one of the first acts of the new Government in May 1997 was to publish a green paper on food standards.

Novel Food
Novel Food is defined as food that had not been consumed to a significant degree by humans in the EU before 15 May 1997, when the first Regulation on novel food came into force.
‘Novel Food’ can be newly developed, innovative food, food produced using new technologies and production processes, as well as food which is or has been traditionally eaten outside of the EU. Examples of Novel Food include new sources of vitamin K or extracts from existing food, agricultural products from third countries, or food derived from new production processes.
If novel food is intended to replace another food, it must not differ in a way that the consumption of the Novel Food would be nutritionally disadvantageous for the consumer.
Pre-market authorisation of Novel Foods on the basis of an evaluation in line with the above principles is necessary.
ScienceDirect Topics
Novel food can be newly developed, innovative food or food produced using new technologies and production processes, as well as food traditionally eaten outside of the EU.The European Food Safety Authority first conducts a scientific risk assessment for every novel food application.
“Novel Food” can be newly developed, innovative food or food produced using new technologies and production processes as well as food traditionally eaten outside of the EU, newly produced nutrients, or extracts from existing food.
Typically raw materials allowed in health foods are those listed in the China Food Composition, National Food Safety Standard-Hygienic Standard of Food Additives, National Food Safety Standard-The Use of Nutritional Fortification Substances in Foods, and food used microbial strains and its sequential update, as well as certain pharmaceutical excipients listed in China Pharmacopoeia.
To differentiate the health benefits of health foods from TCM, the MOH issued three lists on what TCM material is allowed or not permitted in health foods in 2002, which was later adopted by the SFDA. These lists are known as “Ingredients as both food and medicine,” “TCM ingredient allowed to be used in health food,” and “Ingredients prohibited in health food”.
Although a novel food ingredient can be used in health food, it is also clear that the MOH does not approve novel food ingredient application only used for health food.
Risk assessments of novel foods usually use traditional foods and ingredients as reference points and focus on the differences between the novel food and the traditional food.
As recently amended, non-traditional means a food that does not have a history of human consumption in Australia or New Zealand; a substance derived from a food, where that substance does not have a history of human consumption in Australia or New Zealand, other than as a component of the food; or any other substance, where that substance, or the source from which it is derived, does not have a history of human consumption as a food in Australia or New Zealand.

Information For Consumers
Novel foods are foods that can be described as not having a ‘significant history of consumption’ before 15 May 1997 and these need to be authorised by the European Commission, following a safety evaluation carried out by the European Food Safety Authority.
Examples of novel foods are: foods containing novel ingredients such as cannabidiol.
New foods such as spreads with dietary additions to reduce cholesterol.
Traditional foods eaten elsewhere in the world such as chia seeds.
Foods produced using novel treatments such as UV-light to increase Vitamin D in bread. Novel foods have to be assessed for safety, authorised and approved under the Novel Food Regulations before they can be placed on the market in the EU. This applies to all food that has not been used to a significant degree before 15 May 1997, when the first regulation on novel food came into force.
Visit the Business & Industry section for information about the authorisation process for Novel Foods.
The legislation is enforced by Scottish local authorities, so if you have any concerns about food products being sold in your area you can contact your local authority.
Novel Food
Throughout history new types of food, food ingredients or ways of producing food have found their way to Europe from all corners of the globe.
Bananas, tomatoes, pasta, tropical fruit, maize, rice, a wide range of spices – all originally came to Europe as novel foods.
Among the recent arrivals are chia seeds, algae-based foods, baobab fruit and physalis.
Under EU regulations, any food that was not consumed “Significantly” prior to May 1997 is considered to be a novel food.
The category covers new foods, food from new sources, new substances used in food as well as new ways and technologies for producing food.
Examples include oil rich in omega-3 fatty acids from krill as a new source of food, edible insects, or plant sterols as a new substance or nanotechnology as a new way of producing food.
Traditional food is a subset of novel food and refers to food that is traditionally consumed anywhere outside Europe.
Novel Food
Novel food is defined as a type of food that does not have a significant history of consumption or is produced by a method that has not previously been used for food.
Designer food is distinguished from food design, the aesthetic arrangement of food items for marketing purposes.
Any food or food ingredient that falls within this definition must be authorised according to the Novel Food legislation, Regulation No 258/97 of the European Parliament and of the Council.
The simplified application route is only applicable where the EU member national competent authority, e.g. Food Standards Agency in the UK, believes that the novel food in question is substantially equivalent to an existing food or food ingredient.
There have been a number of products launched as a result of food or food ingredients authorised under the Novel Food legislation.
Baobab Dried Fruit Pulp required authorisation under the Novel Food legislation before any food products containing this ingredient could be marketed in the EU. The Baobab Dried Fruit Pulp novel food application, pioneered by John Wilkinson a botanical regulatory consultant together with his client Phytotrade Africa, was also the first successful submission to demonstrate safety without the need for animal testing.
The Novel Foods Regulation requires that a company wanting to sell a novel food notify Health Canada prior to marketing or advertising the product.
Regulation Of Novel Foods
Review of nutritive substances and novel foods FSANZ is currently reviewing the requirements in the Food Standards Code for nutritive substances and novel foods.
Following feedback from stakeholders on Proposal P1024: Revision of the Regulation of Nutritive Substances & Novel Foods we released a consultation paper in June 2017 on a framework for regulating nutritive substances and new novel foods.
What are novel foods? Novel foods are non-traditional foods that require assessment by FSANZ in order to establish their safety before they are added to the food supply.
In Australia and New Zealand, novel foods and novel food ingredients are regulated under Standard 1.5.1 – Novel Foods in the Food Standards Code.
Anyone wanting to sell a novel food or a novel food ingredient must apply to Food Standards Australia New Zealand to request that the Standard be amended to include the food or ingredient in the list.
Public health and safety consideration of novel foods A risk-based assessment process is undertaken to ensure the safety of novel foods before they can be sold in Australia and New Zealand.
Exclusivity of use for novel foods The Standard also includes a provision for exclusive permissions for novel foods.

Protalix BioTherapeutics Shares Jump 73% After Positive Trial Results For PRX-102
Protalix BioTherapeutics Inc. shares soared 73% to $1.82 after the company said that it and Chiesi Global Rare Diseases saw positive topline results from a Phase 3 clinical trial evaluating pegunigalsidase alfa PRX-102 for the treatment of Fabry disease.
Chiesi Global Rare Diseases is a business unit of Chiesi Farmaceutici SpA. PRX-102 is a novel, PEGylated enzyme replacement therapy under development for the treatment of Fabry disease, an inherited illness that occurs in one person per 40,000 to 60,000.
The primary endpoint compared the annualized changes in the estimated glomerular filtration rate of patients treated with PRX-102 and those treated with agalsidase beta, the standard of care.
The study met its pre-specified primary endpoint and demonstrated that PRX-102 was statistically non-inferior to agalsidase beta, the companies said.
The company said these topline results show that PRX-102 was comparable to agalsidase beta in controlling eGFR decline, which is a key measure of Fabry disease progression, and continue to demonstrate a favorable tolerability profile for PRX-102.
The topline results also indicate that PRX-102 was well-tolerated, the companies said.
In October, as part of a Type A End-of-Review meeting, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the proposed analysis of the study demonstrating non-inferiority to agalsidase beta included in the data package for the PRX-102 biologics license application resubmission has the potential to support the approval of PRX-102 for the treatment of Fabry disease, according to the companies.

Fabry Disease: MedlinePlus Genetics
Fabry disease is an inherited disorder that results from the buildup of a particular type of fat, called globotriaosylceramide, in the body’s cells.
Characteristic features of Fabry disease include episodes of pain, particularly in the hands and feet; clusters of small, dark red spots on the skin called angiokeratomas; a decreased ability to sweat; cloudiness or streaks in the front part of the eye; problems with the gastrointestinal system; ringing in the ears; and hearing loss.
Fabry disease affects an estimated 1 in 40,000 to 60,000 males.
Fabry disease is caused by mutations in the GLA gene.
GLA gene mutations that result in an absence of alpha-galactosidase A activity lead to the classic, severe form of Fabry disease.

Fabry Disease
Fabry disease is one of a group of conditions known as lysosomal storage diseases.
End-stage kidney failure in those with Fabry disease typically occurs in the third decade of life, and is a common cause of death due to the disease.
Fabry disease is an inherited lysosomal storage disorder that is caused by a deficiency of alpha-galactosidase A. This enzyme deficiency is a result of an accumulation of glycosphingolipids found in the lysosomes and most cell types and tissues, which leads it to be considered a multisystem disease.
The treatments available for Fabry disease can be divided into therapies that aim to correct the underlying problem of decreased activity of the alpha galactosidase A enzyme and thereby reduce the risk of organ damage, and therapies to improve symptoms and life expectancy once organ damage has already occurred.
Pain associated with Fabry disease may be partially alleviated by enzyme replacement therapy in some patients, but pain management regimens may also include analgesics, anticonvulsants, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, though the latter are usually best avoided in kidney disease.
Fabry disease is panethnic, but due to its rarity, determining an accurate disease frequency is difficult.
Fabry disease was first described by dermatologist Johannes Fabry and surgeon William Anderson independently in 1898.

Post Idea #14: Enzyme replacement therapy

Enzyme Replacement Therapy
Enzyme replacement therapy is typically used to replace a missing or deficient enzyme in a person with an inherited enzyme deficiency syndrome.
A second form of successful enzyme replacement therapy was established for Gaucher disease, an inherited deficiency of lysosomal acid β-glucocerebrosidase that leads to accumulation of the substrate in lysosomes.
A list of enzymes approved for use in enzyme replacement therapy in the United States, the year of first approval, the generic and brand names of the product and the disease for which they are used are given in the Table.
The usual major reactions to enzyme replacement therapy are local infusion reactions and hypersensitivity reactions.
Many enzyme replacement therapies can lead to an improvement in liver injury associated with the underlying condition, and improvement in hepatic function or serum enzyme elevations has been used as a surrogate endpoint for efficacy of some treatments.
Some enzyme replacement therapies are recombinant proteins that share a high degree of homology with the human enzyme.
Serum enzyme elevations that occur on enzyme replacement therapies are usually self-limited and mild and generally do not require dose modification or discontinuation of therapy.
What Is Enzyme Replacement Therapy And How Does It Work?
Often, the best available course of action is simply to replace the deficient enzymes in a process known as enzyme replacement therapy.
What is enzyme replacement therapy and can it really help?
Enzyme replacement therapy is a medical treatment whereby replacement enzymes are given to patients who suffer from chronic conditions resulting from enzyme deficiencies or malfunction.
The most common method of ERT is through IV infusions, in which the replacement enzyme is administered directly into the bloodstream through a controlled drip of fluids.
ERT for Fabry disease seeks to replace the deficient enzyme, alpha-galactosidase A. The two primary replacement enzymes used for Fabry disease are agalsidase alfa and agalsidase beta, which mimic the behavior of the enzyme they’re replacing.
ERT for Gaucher disease involves replacing the deficient GCase enzyme with a genetically modified substitute, which allows the body to break down the fatty chemicals that would otherwise build up in the bones and organs.
ERT can trigger immune responses based on how the body reacts to the infused enzyme.
Enzyme Replacement Therapy
Enzyme replacement therapy is a medical treatment which replaces an enzyme that is deficient or absent in the body.
ERT is available for some lysosomal storage diseases: Gaucher disease, Fabry disease, MPS I, MPS II, MPS VI and Pompe disease.
Leading work was done on this subject at the Department of Physiology at the University of Alberta by Mark J. Poznansky and Damyanti Bhardwaj, where a model for enzyme therapy was developed using rats.
Lysosomal storage diseases are fatal group of diseases and a main application of ERT. Lysosomes are cellular organelles that are responsible for the metabolism of many different macromolecules and proteins.
This is a form of ERT that has resulted in healthier, longer lives for patients with ADA-SCID. Nine lysosomal storage diseases and corresponding enzyme therapies.
ERT is not a cure for lysosomal storage diseases, and it requires lifelong IV infusions of the therapeutic enzyme.
Substrate reduction therapy is another method for treating lysosomal storage diseases.
Protalix BioTherapeutics and Chiesi Global Rare Diseases said PRX-102 was as good as Sanofi ‘s Fabrazyme for treating Fabry disease in a late stage study.
The companies were evaluating PRX-102 1 mg/kg administered every two weeks against Fabrazyme in patients with Fabry disease with deteriorating renal function in a phase 3 trial called BALANCE. The study met our pre-defined criteria for non-inferiority of the primary endpoint of kidney function in a head-to-head active comparison on both the Intent-to-Treat and Per Protocol analysis sets.
These topline results show that PRX-102 was comparable to agalsidase beta in controlling eGFR decline, which is a key measure of Fabry disease progression, and continue to demonstrate a favorable tolerability profile for PRX-102,” said Einat Brill Almon, Protalix’s senior vice president and chief development officer.
Patients were randomized on a 2:1 ratio for switching to PRX-102 or continuing on Fabrazyme.
A total of 77 patients were treated; 52 with PRX-102 and 25 with Fabrazyme.
The companies said PRX-102 met the criteria for non-inferiority of the primary goal of kidney function.
The companies noted that Treatment-related adverse events were reported for 21 patients in the PRX-102 arm compared to 11 in the agalsidase beta arm.

Sanofi’S Xenpozyme Becomes First Therapy Approved For Rare Progressive Genetic Disorder ASMD
Sanofi SA’s enzyme replacement therapy, Xenpozyme, has been approved for use in Japan, making it the world’s first and only approved therapy to treat acid sphingomyelinase deficiency, also known as Niemann-Pick type B disease.
Sanofi’s executive vice president and global head of R&D, John Reed, hailed it as a “Watershed moment” that was the culmination of 20 years of research.
Enzyme Replacement Therapy
Patients with Gaucher disease type 3 constitute 5%-10% of the population of Gaucher patients in the Western countries.
The enzyme can be administered to patients on hemodialysis and to those who have received renal transplants.
In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study on 66 patients with CESD, ERT normalized ALT levels in 31% of patients in the treated group, improved cholesterol and triglyceride levels in plasma, and reduced fat content in the liver.
Patients diagnosed with mucopolysaccharidosis type I lack enzyme alpha-l.-iduronidase, resulting in accumulation of cytotoxic products, followed by multiple organ failure and significantly shortened life expectancy.
A phase III study of systemic administration of the enzyme in affected children was successful only in reducing nonneurological symptoms and pain, but a significant percentage of patients also experienced an immune reaction.
Currently, a phase I/II gene therapy clinical trial is underway and recruiting patients with MPS VI. It utilizes an AAV8 encoding hARSB with liver-specific thyroxine-binding globulin promoter.
In the second study, 20 pediatric ASMD patients have been enrolled in a phase 1/2 multicenter, open-label ascending dose study to evaluate the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and exploratory efficacy of Olipudase alfa in ASMD patients less than 18 years of age.

Rishi, who had stepped down as chief executive of Scottsdale logistics industry software firm Blue Yonder in late Februrary, has taken over as CEO of Cognite AS, a software company based in Oslo, Norway, that is focused on bringing efficiencies to global energy, manufacturing and other legacy industrial-focused businesses.
In 2020, the company set up its North American headquarters in Austin, and also has an office in Houston where Cognite focuses on serving energy industry customers.
He succeeds outgoing Cognite CEO and co-founder John Markus Lervik, who will remain with the company as chief strategy and development officer.
“Today we are excited to have Girish Rishi join the company, who brings with him proven software and technology experience. Girish is a world-class talent and will partner with John Markus and the Cognite team to scale the company globally.”
Global growth Rishi told the Business Journal that he really had no intention of leaving Blue Yonder, and actually rebuffed Cognite’s initial approach last November but said the company persisted and after further discussions he saw a great opportunity.
Under Rishi’s guidance, Blue Yonder saw major growth since he joined the company in 2017 when it was known as JDA Software.
The software-as-a-service company focused on digital supply chain and commerce fulfillment went through its rebranding as Blue Yonder in 2020, a year before the company struck a deal in April 2021 to be acquired by electronics behemoth Panasonic in a deal valued at $7.1 billion.

Pest Control
Pest control is the regulation or management of a species defined as a pest, a member of the animal kingdom that impacts adversely on human activities.
Pest control measures may be performed as part of an integrated pest management strategy.
Pest control is at least as old as agriculture, as there has always been a need to keep crops free from pests.
Chemical pest control is still the predominant type of pest control today, although a renewed interest in traditional and biological pest control developed towards the end of the 20th century and continues to this day.
Biological pest control is a method of controlling pests such as insects and mites by using other organisms.
Pest control can also be achieved via culling the pest animals – generally small- to medium-sized wild or feral mammals or birds that inhabit the ecological niches near farms, pastures or other human settlements – by employing human hunters or trappers to physically track down, kill and remove them from the area.
Physical pest control involves trapping or killing pests such as insects and rodents.

Plymouth Pest Control Company Takes ‘Blame’ For Glue Traps Used In SPAR Store
A Plymouth pest control business has taken responsibility for using a glue trap to catch mice in a city shop.
Residents complained to the store and the RSPCA said glue traps cause “Unacceptable suffering” to animals.
He also said that glue traps are used around the world by pest control companies and are legal.
In February following the video of the glue traps in use, PlymouthLive contacted the RSPCA who said the “Glue traps are horrible devices.”
“There is also a lot to do around banning glue traps, but they are still used by pest control companies around the world and are there are still things you have to do before using them, but they are perfectly legal. I think it’s a bit unfair SPAR axed the Plymouth branch because every SPAR has pest control contract, but it was the fact this one got me and public abuse. I used to work for the Environmental Health and the only reason the shop got shut down was because it became so viral.”
“A spokesperson for the RSPCA has explained that glue traps cause ‘unacceptable suffering’ to animals, and are calling for a ban on them. RSPCA scientific officer Evie Button said in February:”Glue traps are horrible devices, which have no place in modern England.
“Once the poor animal is stuck, they begin to struggle to free themselves, and in doing so, more and more parts of their body become trapped in the glue. In their increasing panic and desperation to escape, rats and mice have been found to tear patches of their fur out, break bones, and even gnaw their own limbs off in a bid to be free. Unfortunately, glue traps are widely available and a cheap method of rodent control – but there are other, more humane methods available too, such as humane deterrence.”

What Is Web Conferencing Meetings And Presentations
Web Conferencing is an online service by which you can hold live meetings, conferencing, presentations and trainings via the internet particularly on TCP/IP connections.
As with a video conference, connecting to a web conference requires a webcam, a microphone, a monitor and a sound system and a web browser.
Broadly, web conferencing provides a web meeting, webcast and webinar solution.
Web conferencing platforms also need to include security features.

Web Conferencing
Web conferencing is used as an umbrella term for various types of online conferencing and collaborative services including webinars, webcasts, and web meetings.
Web conferencing software is invoked by all participants in a web meeting.
Many web conferencing vendors provide the central connectivity and provisioning of meeting “Ports” or “Seats” as a hosted web service, while others allow the web conference host to install and run the software on its own local servers.
Vendor-hosted web conferencing is usually licensed as a service based on one of three pricing models: a fixed cost per user per minute, a monthly or annual flat fee allowing unlimited use with a fixed maximum capacity per session, or a sliding rate fee based on the number of allowed meeting hosts and per-session participants.
The term “Webinar” is a portmanteau of web and seminar, meaning a presentation, lecture, or workshop that is transmitted over the web.

What Is The Private Equity Secondary Market?
The private equity secondary market is where previously issued equity from a firm is bought or sold and new investor commitments are made.
Private equity investments are typically very illiquid and it is often difficult to buy and sell positions in private equity investments.
The demand for access to these investments has been increasing so the private equity secondary market has been developing since the 1980s in order to meet this demand.
The private equity secondary market and secondary transactions, or ‘secondaries’, are driven by what is referred to as the ‘denominator effect.
There are multiple reasons why buyers seek to acquire private equity interests in a secondary market.
Private equity fund investments tend to be longer in duration than in secondary markets, thus the buyer could acquire such interests at a very good price.
Many investors feel the secondary market is vital to their private equity portfolios.
The Private Equity Secondary Market
Private equity’s secondary market has experienced rapid growth over the last decade as the private equity asset class has grown and evolved.
Secondary transaction volumes set a new record in 2017 and the market is expected to remain buoyant for some years to come.
This paper provides an overview of the market: its key actors and their motivations, and recent developments in pricing, volumes, and transaction types.

The Rise Of The Private Equity Secondaries Market: Key Trends
The secondaries market has been enjoying accelerated growth over the last 15 years-reaching an all-time high in 2019 of $88 billion for transaction in AUM, up from $37 billion three years prior.
Fundraising for secondaries rose from $27 billion raised in 2019 to $90 billion in 2020, including several funds independently raising an excess of $10 billion.
Whilst initial economic shocks brought on by the pandemic resulted in a market hit for the private equities secondaries market, the second half of 2020 saw an impressive rebound- the market is predicted to reach $100 billion this year.
Whilst notable, it’s also important to address that this rapid growth parallels the rapid growth of the primary market, which has grown exponentially over the last 20 years as the size of capital behind this market increased.
In response to increased interest in the space, IQ-EQ and private equity tech platform, Moonfare, joined forces to co-host a virtual roundtable, discussing the key emerging trends we’re seeing over this high-growth period.
Bringing together decades of experience in the Private Equities space, IQ-EQ and Moonfare have produced a whitepaper on the top five trends taking place in secondaries right now.
This includes; the increasingly strategic value of secondary transactions for limited partners; general partner-led investors going mainstream; transaction volumes vs pricing; increasing access to the secondaries space; and how secondaries has gone from niche to a must-have for private equity fund managers.
Secondary Private Equity Investments
Private equity funds occasionally liquidate or sell illiquid private equity investments via secondary transactions to a secondary private equity fund.
These secondary private equity funds help private equity investors of all sizes address their liquidity and portfolio management needs.
This secondary private equity market is considered the buying and selling of unrealized investor commitments to another private equity fund.

Not only were more total transactions completed by number, but the average number of funds per transaction increased over 30% from 13 in 2015 to 18 in 2016.12 As increasingly diverse portfolios are brought to market, and as more buyer and seller types recognize the secondary market as a viable portfolio solution, we believe secondary private equity will be poised for continued growth.
Approximately half of active buyers in the secondary market today are also sellers, and over half of all secondary buyers have the ability to purchase interests across multiple private equity strategies, suggesting that while competition in the secondary market is certainly growing, participant sophistication is growing as well.16 A closer look at pricing levels in 2015 and 2016 reveals that par and premium prices were paid mostly on large-cap US and European funds, with well-diversified underlying investments and regular distribution streams.

How The Pandemic Transformed The PE Secondaries Market
Over the last two years, funds that hold only a few huge companies – often only one – have come to dominate the private equity secondary market.
In 2021, 44 percent of GP-led secondaries were invested in single-asset or highly concentrated continuation funds, up by 9 percentage points from the year before, according to private equity advisory firm Campbell Lutyens.
The high return expectation for single-asset funds is due in part to the rise of the secondaries market as a whole during the pandemic.
In 2021, the secondaries market reached $135 billion in value crossing the $100 billion milestone for the first time, according to Campbell Lutyens.
The volume of secondary transactions dropped dramatically at certain points during the pandemic, according to Vish Apte, principal at Auldbrass Partners, a PE secondaries firm based in New York.
Due to distressed valuations in the public market, “LPs were waiting for pricing to stabilize,” he told II. But the rebound of the stock market in 2021 injected a similar confidence into secondaries.
“The secondaries market is growing quickly, and adoption of single-asset funds effectively takes the ceiling off the market. Experienced talent may be the restraining factor on future growth.”
The Key To Private Equity’S Growth Is The Booming Secondary Market
The secondary market for private equity, where stakes in funds and in their assets change hands or are sold into new structures in order to raise liquidity for investors, has finally come into its own.
In their most complex form, fund and asset restructuring, secondaries offer a way to either raise cash, or hold onto promising assets for longer periods than the typical 10-year private equity fund allows.
Beyond the specialists and an ever-growing population of more opportunistic generalists on the investor buyside, we are seeing an increasingly dense rush into the secondary market by fund managers.
Among the top 20 largest general partners – defined by Private Equity International as the largest fundraisers over the last five years – the number of those with dedicated secondary investment programs has doubled to six in the past 12 months, with a further two setting up operations.
As private equity managers look for ways to attract retail investment – especially from defined contribution plans where decades-old regulatory barriers that prevented private equity investment are now falling – secondary operations are likely to prove an indispensable magnet.
Liquidity is increasingly key to private equity’s appeal for institutional investors – especially as a portfolio management tool – and it’s the secret sauce when it comes to private equity’s eventual appeal for retail investors.
All this means the secondary market’s growth will drive private equity’s future.

Mistaking smoke for a kind of steam, they began filling their balloons with hot smoky air which they called “Electric smoke” and, despite not fully understanding the principles at work, made some successful launches and in 1783 were invited to give a demonstration to the French Académie des Sciences.
In an attempt the next year to provide both endurance and controllability, de Rozier developed a balloon having both hot air and hydrogen gas bags, a design which was soon named after him as the Rozière.
“His work lead to him developing the concept of the modern wing. His flight attempts in the year 1891 are seen as the beginning of human flight and the „Lilienthal Normalsegelapparat” is considered to be the first air plane in series production, making the Maschinenfabrik Otto Lilienthal the first air plane production company in the world.
Aeronautics
There are four basic areas that aeronautical engineers must understand in order to be able to design planes.
To design a plane, engineers must understand all of these elements.
The study of propulsion is what leads the the engineers determine the right kind of engine and the right amount of power that a plane will need.
The engineers design the controls that are needed in order to fly and instruments are provided for the pilot in the cockpit of the plane.
NASA Engineering Teams consist of many individuals – engineers, technicians, and scientists and various support personal.
To begin a career as an Engineer or Scientist you need to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited College or University.
Preparing to become a NASA Engineering Team member is difficult.
Bachelor’S Degree In Aeronautics
The Aviation Area of Concentration is the degree area where credit for prior aviation learning is housed or where students can take aeronautical science courses.
Many Embry-Riddle courses are designed to teach the same skills and knowledge that Aeronautics students have acquired through experience and training.
Credit for completion of such courses will not be applied to degree requirements.
This fast-paced program allows qualifying students the opportunity to complete both the Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics and the Master of Science in Aeronautics in five academic years.
Students who are accepted in the BSA-MSA 4+1 combined pathway program, will spend three academic years in undergraduate-level study and then, during their senior year, will be allowed to take up to three graduate-level courses from the MSA to replace an equal number of elective courses in the BSA degree.
Before selecting the three courses to be taken, students must confer with an advisor to ensure that the courses selected are suitable.
If a grade of C or F is earned in any of the courses taken in lieu of the elective courses in the BSA degree, the student will be removed from the program, have credit awarded to the BSA degree only, and may continue to complete the BSA degree.

Timber Moving From Houston To Vanderhoof – Houston Today
The Canfor Houston sawmill is transporting logs to the Canfor Plateau sawmill in Vanderhoof.
Houston residents have expressed concern over timber being transported from the Canfor Houston mill to the Canfor Plateau mill located in Vanderhoof.
“From time to time we move logs from one facility to another to support continued operations. Currently our Plateau facility requires some additional logs and we have volume available from our Houston facility. The transfer will not impact Houston’s operations and it provides extra employment for our logging contractors and trucking workforce in the Houston area,” Canfor Senior Director of Communications Michelle Ward told Houston Today.
As for the total volume of the logs currently being moved from Houston to Vanderhoof, Ward could not specify.
Production cuts lasted at the Houston mill until Jan. 3, 2022 when the mill returned to full operations.
In the spring of 2014 the Houston Forest Products mill closed permanently after being transferred to Canfor from West Fraser as part of a large scale exchange of mills and licenses in order to strengthen timber supply to remaining mills.
At the time, the exchanges and mill shutdowns were blamed on low of timber supply following the mountain pine beetle epidemic.
West Fraser’S SterlingOSB Zero Is The Answer To Green, Speed And Cost Demands
Speed and efficiency favour off-site housebuilding; off-site favours timber frame; and timber frame favours West Fraser’s SterlingOSB Zero.
Offsite timber frame construction could be the solution for housebuilders and using West Fraser’s SterlingOSB Zero is just the ticket in terms of green, speed and cost when considering essential board materials.
Timber frame scores significantly on both counts since off-site manufacture reduces not only the erection time on site but also the amount of traditional building skills required.
The factory processes employed in the manufacture of timber frame cassettes can be largely automated, unlike traditional site-based building trades.
Structural timber technology addresses many government concerns associated with the procurement of housing – including environmental impact and energy efficiency, as well as speed of construction and cost.
West Fraser’s oriented strand board, SterlingOSB Zero, is one of the most widely-used components of UK timber frame systems.
Besides ‘traditional’ timber frame construction, newer timber-based off-site technologies, such as cross-laminated timber and structural insulated panel systems, are strengthening timber’s share of the housebuilding market.

As a result, the U.S. Federal Reserve is expected to raise interest rates six times this year and twice next year to curb the current rapid rise in the price of goods and services.
The impact of an expected fall in demand will be felt on lumber prices as early as this year, and analysts believe producers will be forced to sell at a much lower price of ~$742 per 1,000 board feet within a year, which will reflect a more than 20% drop from the current price of ~$970.
In the past three months, six Wall Street analysts have issued a 12-month price target for WFG. The company has a Strong Buy consensus rating based on six Buys, zero Holds, and zero Sell ratings.
The company has strong fundamentals, but this hasn’t been reflected in its stock price performance this year, as positive momentum in energy stocks has diverted traders’ attention away from timber stocks as well.

With A Portfolio Of Iconic Snacks, Hostess Brands Sweetens Its Business For Another Century
For Hostess Brands CEO Andy Callahan, turning the century-old maker of Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Donettes into “a snacking powerhouse” is as much about looking toward its future as it is about embracing his own past.
Buoyed by its reorganization, consumers’ growing appetite for snacks and a suite of brands like Ho Hos, Donettes and the ageless Twinkie, Kansas-based Hostess has quickly emerged as a standout in the food space.
Despite Hostess’ recent success, the company is not immune to pressure on its business from further shifts in food consumption, especially with a portfolio associated with sweets and indulging, or from innovation coming from other large CPGs. Paul Earle, an adjunct lecturer at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management and cofounder of a nutrient-rich macaroni and cheese brand, said the perception of Hostess by consumers as a purveyor of sugar-laden, unhealthy snacks will weigh on the company’s brands as trends revert back to before the pandemic.
Hostess will undoubtedly have its hands full competing against other CPGs with equally well-known brands and even deeper financial pockets, like Oreo owner Mondelēz International, Reese’s and Kisses manufacturer Hershey, and privately held Mars Wrigley, the firm behind M&M’s and Kind bars.
In the past year, Hostess has launched products such as Baby Bundts for a morning sweet, Crispy Minis snacks in a bag for sharing, and Hostess Boost Jumbo Donettes, a mega-size version of its popular mini doughnut with slightly less caffeine than one cup of coffee aimed at consumers looking for a morning wakeup or afternoon pick-me-up.
Hostess is targeting category-leading brands that enhance its presence in spaces where it already exists, or that enable it to enter into a new niche, much like Voortman did with its wafers and sugar-free cookies, he said.
The broader strength of Hostess’ brands and their positioning in the marketplace as an impulse offering have allowed the snack maker to raise prices more easily as part of a natural course of doing business and to offset surging costs tied to higher inputs and supply chain disruptions.

The Guide To Customer Engagement
There is no single customer engagement method that works for every company across all industries; however, a sincere focus on empathy, clarity, and simplicity in your dealings with customers and prospects should be the basis for all of your customer engagement activities.
There are many positive customer engagement examples that can be used to model a customer engagement strategy; major brands use everything from funny, responsive social media agents to personalized discounts and offerings to inspire loyalty and affection in their customers.
No matter the approach you take, customer engagement strategies provide you with a solid framework for customer retention that your team – and the wider business – can get behind.
Three steps to smarter customer engagement and increasing customer retention Step 1.
Using your customer engagement metrics as a guide, you can improve your customer loyalty in the long term, but there are short-term ways to use metrics to improve your audience’s experience.
Using industry-standard metrics is helpful to know how you compare to your competitors, but the most important use for metrics is to continually adapt and tailor your customer engagement strategy for better customer satisfaction, higher levels of interaction, and ideally, more sales.
Customer engagement is often the result of positive customer experiences.
What Is Customer Engagement? Definition, Best Practices,
The concept of customer engagement has evolved in recent years, as more companies seek innovative ways to attract and retain loyal customers.
Customer engagement is sometimes confused with customer satisfaction and experience, and there is some overlap, but each is distinct.
In general, it’s simpler to sell to a current customer versus a new lead. In fact, the likelihood of selling to a new prospect is just 5-20%, but the probability of selling to an existing customer is 60-70%. Upselling saves time, costs, and can help you to more quickly earn a profit.
Customer satisfaction measures how much your consumer likes their experience, and engagement and is usually the last determining factor on whether a customer will return or walk away from the interaction feeling unfulfilled.
In the beginning, you may manage customer engagement using disparate tools or software, but as you grow, customers can fall through the cracks.
With a robust tool, you can centralize all activities throughout the customer lifecycle and create a seamless customer experience across all channels.
Customer engagement platforms are invaluable tools for creating a satisfying experience that centers around your customer.
What Is Customer Engagement? A Complete Up-To-Date Guide
No technological requirements, ease of use, and average open rates as high as 90% are probably the reasons why SMS marketing continues to be a viable channel for customer engagement since its inception in the early 90s. Effectively leveraging it to uplift customer engagement for your online business shouldn’t be a challenge as SMS is one channel where customers don’t really mind receiving promotional or transactional messages.
A customer engagement platform is simply an automation tool that helps online businesses centralize, automate, track and analyze customer interaction across all touchpoints throughout the customer journey.
A customer engagement platform helps you closely monitor your customer journeys and figure out relevant opportunities for engagement.
A customer engagement platform, thus, ensures you leverage emerging technologies to make data-backed, customer-focused decisions to constantly improve your customer engagement metrics.

To help demystify this buzzword and what it means for your small business, we’re going to take a look at how customer engagement is defined, how to measure it, and ways you can use it to acquire new customers and retain the ones you already have.
At their core every definition I’ve come across shares one thing in common: customer engagement is all about interactions between your customer and your brand.
Ultimately, Peterson’s definition clarifies that the more valuable and frequent the engagement is, the more invested your customer will be with your brand in the long term.
“Customer engagement is the degree and depth of brand-focused interactions a customer chooses to perform.”The Smile Team.
Another customer engagement study by Ray Wang of Constellation Research found that “Companies who have improved engagement increase cross-sell by 22%, drive up-sell revenue from 13% to 51%, and also increase order sizes from 5% to 85%.”.
It’s this emotional investment that makes them less likely to shop with a competitor and what so strongly connects customer engagement to customer loyalty.

The former global headquarters of Commonwealth Bank were the Commonwealth Trading Bank Building on the corner of Pitt Street and Martin Place, Sydney, which was refurbished from 2012 for retail and commercial uses, and the State Savings Bank Building on Martin Place, which was sold in 2012 to Macquarie Bank.
The Commonwealth Bank of Australia was established by the Commonwealth Bank Act 1911, introduced by the Andrew Fisher Labor Government, which favoured bank nationalisation, with effect on 22 December 1911.
It took over the savings bank business of the Government Savings Bank of New South Wales, the current account and fixed deposit business of the NSW Rural Bank Department, and the State Savings Bank of Western Australia.
As a result, the government separated the two roles, creating the Reserve Bank of Australia to exercise the central bank function, and leaving the Commonwealth Banking Corporation to operate purely as a commercial bank.
Those commercial functions were exercised by the organization’s constituent sections: the Commonwealth Trading Bank of Australia, the Commonwealth Savings Bank of Australia, and the newly-formed Commonwealth Development Bank.
On 10 March 2000, the Commonwealth Bank and Colonial Limited announced their intention to merge, with seven Commonwealth Bank shares being offered for twenty Colonial Shares.

The three renewable energy technologies that have benefitted substantially from private equity investment were solar energy, wind energy and, to a lesser degree, biomass, three technologies that have entered a mature stage of commercialisation.
The private equity support for buyouts and acquisition was, in the period 2012-17, relatively modest compared with companies in the solar and wind energy, but on par with hydro energy firms.
Cleantech energy firms involved in hydro energy or geothermal energy are, by their very nature, not heavily supported by venture capital backing, and hydro energy only appears prominent during the period 2012-17 after the developmental stages, with substantial private equity funding for buyouts.
The overall trend that emerges from the data for 2012-17 is that solar energy and wind energy firms find substantial support from VCs during all the development stages, in particular for expansion.
During the period 2012-17, approximately a third of all private equity investments has a specific energy industry focus, most of which came from venture capital funds backing the development process of renewable energy companies.
With VC funds focussing on the solar energy industry in particular, the investments in other types of renewable energy would be supported by more general funds.
Tidal energy is a type of technology that transforms energy from tidal currents into electricity.
What Is Clean Technology?
Clean technology is also referred to as cleantech, green technology, and greentech.
All clean technology solutions seek to positively impact anthropogenic climate change.
Clean technology solutions are therefore considered profitable against a wider variety of criteria compared to other types of technology investment.
Market, as well as climate forecasts, are brought to bear on clean technology investment, and the ultimate cost to life on earth of doing nothing can outweigh risks and outlays for some investors and funding agencies.
The adoption of clean technologies, such as the sustainable energy sources listed above, as well as a transition from conventional gasoline-powered vehicles to biofuel and electric vehicles, are just a few of the suggested ways to control emissions.
Underpinning the development of clean technology are developments in information and communication technology, materials science, nanotechnology, semiconductors, and electronics.
There is a global drive to adopt clean technology solutions due to the current climate emergency being declared by governments globally.
What Is Cleantech?
Cleantech was popularized in large part through the work of Nick Parker and Keith Raab, founders of the Cleantech Venture Network from 2002 onwards.
They registered or acquired a large number of the cleantech related domain names and a number of cleantech related trademarks, though no trademark exists for the term cleantech itself.
While no one person or organization is generally credited with coining the term for its current purpose, besides the Cleantech Group, attribution is sometimes also given to energy technology consultancy Clean Edge, whose principals include green business journalist, author and speaker Joel Makower, and Ron Pernick and Clint Wilder, authors of the 2007 book Cleantech Revolution.
2005 also saw the emergence of blogs dedicated to following the sector, the earliest of which included Clean Break by Canadian journalist Tyler Hamilton, Cleantech Blog edited by merchant banker Neal Dikeman, and Cleantech Investing, written by venture capitalist Rob Day, which helped to proliferate the sector and the term.
Definitions of what is included in cleantech vary among among industry participants, but the most cited definitions of cleantech would certainly include the running definition in Wikipedia and the definition provided by the Cleantech Group.
From Wikipedia:”Cleantech or clean tech is generally defined as knowledge-based products or services that improve operational performance, productivity or efficiency while reducing costs, inputs, energy consumption, waste or pollution. Cleantech is differentiated from green technology since it generally refers to the emerging financial industry. Specifically, the investment focus includes water purification, eco-efficient production techniques, renewable energy, green technology, and sustainable business. Since the 1990s, the financial community began more active interest and investing into the Cleantech space.”
“The definition on Wikipedia has changed since this 2007 version. The Cleantech Group also developed within their own definition which includes a market segmentation and taxonomy of what sectors was included in the the cleantech sector. This version has served as a reasonable proxy for an official definition:”Clean is more than green.
Clean Technology
Clean technology includes a broad range of technology related to recycling, renewable energy, information technology, green transportation, electric motors, green chemistry, lighting, grey water, and more.
Clean Edge, a clean technology research firm, describes clean technology “a diverse range of products, services, and processes that harness renewable materials and energy sources, dramatically reduce the use of natural resources, and cut or eliminate emissions and wastes.” Clean Edge notes that, “Clean technologies are competitive with, if not superior to, their conventional counterparts. Many also offer significant additional benefits, notably their ability to improve the lives of those in both developed and developing countries.”
In 2009, Clean Edge forecasted that the three main clean technology sectors, solar photovoltaics, wind power, and biofuels, would have revenues of $325.1 billion by 2018.
In 2008, clean technology venture investments in North America, Europe, China, and India totaled a record $8.4 billion.
Solar accounted for almost 40% of total clean technology investment dollars in 2008, followed by biofuels at 11%. In 2019, sovereign wealth funds directly invested just under US$ 3 billion in renewable energy.
India is one of the countries that have achieved remarkable success in sustainable development by implementing clean technology, and it became a global clean energy powerhouse.
These goals are designed to build a sustainable future and to implement in the countries in the UN. Many parts of the 17 goals are related to the usage of clean technology since it is eventually an essential part of designing a sustainable future in various areas such as land, cities, industries, climate, etc.

Sixth Avenue
Sixth Avenue begins four blocks below Canal Street, at Franklin Street in TriBeCa, where the northbound Church Street divides into Sixth Avenue to the left and the local continuation of Church Street to the right, which then ends at Canal Street.
The IRT Sixth Avenue Line elevated railway was constructed on Sixth Avenue in 1878, darkening the street and reducing its real-estate value.
The Sixth Avenue extension also allowed for the construction of the Independent Subway System’s Eighth Avenue line, which was to run below Sixth Avenue south of Eighth Street.
Sixth Avenue, the only numbered avenue to extend south of Houston Street, thus became the southernmost numbered avenue in Manhattan.
The replacement Sixth Avenue subway, which ran between Houston and 53rd Streets with a transfer to the Eighth Avenue line at West Fourth Street, opened in 1940.
Another group of modernist structures along Sixth Avenue in midtown was the “XYZ Buildings” at 1211, 1221, and 1251 Sixth Avenue.
Sixth Avenue is served by the New York City Subway with the IND Sixth Avenue Line north of Houston Street, and the IND Eighth Avenue Line south of Greenwich Avenue.

Durst Organization Unveils Plan For New Park Serving Dutch Kills Community
The real estate developer that built the second tallest building in Queens has unveiled plans for a new park that will serve the Dutch Kills community, which has among the smallest amount of park space per capita of any neighborhood in the borough.
The Durst Organization has begun construction on the new half-acre Sven Park, on an area that was used as a staging area during the building of The Sven, a 71-story luxury building at 29-37 41st Ave.
The new park will open early next year and feature an interactive children’s playscape with a slide and wooden climbing area known as The Nest.
The park will also feature an array of plantings, such as tall bald cypress trees, flowering trees and plants.
The unveiling of Sven Park follows the launch of leasing at the tower in November.
“In a city short on green space, we are excited to unveil our plans to bring a brand-new, public park to Long Island City,” Durst Organization President Jonathan Durst said.
“Sven Park will offer a welcome respite for both residents and the surrounding community, whether they are taking their dog for a walk, bringing the kids to the playground, or just looking to get some fresh air. We look forward to welcoming everyone to this new neighborhood amenity.”
Durst Employees Not Vaccinated By Labor Day Will Be Fired: Report
The Durst Organization has a tough message for the hundreds of its non-union employees in its corporate offices: Get vaccinated or get fired.
The family-run, New York real estate empire expects its corporate employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 by Sept. 6, or they will be “Separated from the company,” a spokesman confirmed to The Post.
The policy was communicated to the company’s 350 corporate employees in June, Barowitz said, and was “Driven by the wishes of the employees who want to work in a safer environment.”
The company’s corporate employees have been working from the company’s headquarters for some time, he added.
The union employees “Are building service workers, cleaners, security, doorman and local 93 covers the engineers who maintain the mechanical systems in the buildings,” the source said.
In response to the CDC’s Tuesday guidance, Morgan Stanley – whose CEO James Gorman has warned employees they could face a pay cut if they don’t return to the office after Labor Day – signaled that it might soften its stance.
On Monday, Mayor De Blasio ordered city workers to get a shot or submit to weekly COVID tests by Sept. 13 while Governor Andrew Cuomo implemented a similar policy for all state employees to get vaccinated by Sept. 6.
