Vulcan Energy Resources

VUL has assembled one of the best technical teams with this rare skill set, putting VUL in a strong position to grow through acquisition of geothermalbrine projects.

De-risked capital: large pools of capital earmarked for Environmental, Social & Governance investments need to find a home, meaning that VUL should face fewer hurdles in securing financing.

Having raised $320M via two Placements in 2021, VUL is financed through to completion of its DFS, but further financing will need to be secured to fund project construction.

Financing risk: we think the DFS is going to be VUL’s calling card for financing the project, but things may change.

Stakeholder risk: VUL needs a social licence to operate.

VUL has already been a very successful investment for us since we invested at 20c in August 2019 – we have free carried, taken profit and still hold 563,000 shares.

S3 Consortium Pty Ltd has been engaged by VUL to share our commentary on the progress of our investment in VUL over time.

Short-Seller Allegations Against Geothermal Lithium Player Vulcan Energy Resources

The last few weeks saw a lot of coverage on Vulcan Energy Resources the company dominating news on potential Lithium extraction from geothermal brines in the Upper Rhine region in Germany.

On October 26, 2021 a short seller called J Capital Research published a report on Vulcan calling the company the “God of empty promises”, which resulted in a trading halt for the company the day after.

According to the FAZ, the JCap report cites several reasons at once: Twelve experts – geologists from the region, politicians and lithium managers – presented the costs as underestimated in their contributions, but presented the potential quantity and quality of lithium as overestimated.

In the report of the Wall Street Journal published on November 17th , which also deals with the JCap report, Tobias Tretter from Commodity Capital is quoted saying: “We rate the Vulcan Energy share as absolutely overvalued. A market capitalization of EUR 1.3 billion for a company that doesn’t even have a permission is very sporty,”Tretter explained to wallstreet: online heute.

Vulcan Energy Resources is seeking legal action against the allegations.

There is also a certain conflict of interest for JCap: As a short seller of VER shares, the company benefits from falling share prices.

Since the release of the shortseller report, Vulcan Energy Resources has released a number of news.

Artificial Heart

An artificial heart is a device that replaces the heart.

Artificial hearts are typically used to bridge the time to heart transplantation, or to permanently replace the heart in the case that a heart transplant is impossible.

An artificial heart is distinct from a ventricular assist device, which can be a permanent solution also, or the intra-aortic balloon pump- both devices are designed to support a failing heart.

In 1964, the National Institutes of Health started the Artificial Heart Program, with the goal of putting an artificial heart into a human by the end of the decade.

On 4 April 1969, Domingo Liotta and Denton A. Cooley replaced a dying man’s heart with a mechanical heart inside the chest at The Texas Heart Institute in Houston as a bridge for a transplant.

Other pulse-less artificial heart designs include the HeartMate II from Thoratec, which uses an Archimedes screw; and an experimental artificial heart designed by Bud Frazier and Billy Cohn, using turbines spinning at 8,000 to 12,000 RPMs. A centrifugal artificial heart which alternately pumps the pulmonary circulation and the systemic circulation, causing a pulse, has been described.

In 2012, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine compared the Berlin Heart to extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and concluded that “a ventricular assist device available in several sizes for use in children as a bridge to heart transplantation was associated with a significantly higher rate of survival as compared with ECMO.” The study’s primary author, Charles D. Fraser Jr., surgeon in chief at Texas Children’s Hospital, explained: “With the Berlin Heart, we have a more effective therapy to offer patients earlier in the management of their heart failure. When we sit with parents, we have real data to offer so they can make an informed decision. This is a giant step forward.”

In addition to their expertise in heart transplant and cardiac care, our surgeons are leaders in implanting the total artificial heart in patients with severe heart failure.

The artificial heart is a mechanical circulatory support device that replaces the lower chambers of the heart in patients with advanced heart failure.

Similar to a heart transplant, the surgery to implant an artificial heart is complex.

Living with an artificial heart also requires significant planning and preparation.

A total artificial heart is a temporary solution meant to keep people strong while waiting for a heart transplant.

Artificial Hearts: Past, Present And Future

Dr. Miller: About 32 years ago, Barney Clark had the first artificial heart implanted here at the University of Utah.

He’s an Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery in the Department of Surgery here at the University of Utah, and Craig is an expert in heart transplantation as well as ventricular assist devices, which are the new artificial hearts.

About 32 years ago, Barney Clark was the first man to undergo an artificial heart implantation, and that was here at the University of Utah.

Dr. Selzman, can you talk to us about what’s new with artificial hearts?

We have pumps now that allow people to have artificial heart support that can actually go swimming with internal batteries and stuff.

For the last 25 years, we’ve done about 2,000-2,500 hearts a year in the United States, but there are probably 80- to 100,000 folks that need it today.

Dr. Miller: What does the future look like in terms of these devices? I mean, do you see these devices becoming smaller, like calculators becoming smaller and smaller?

7 Things You Should Know About Artificial Hearts

Artificial hearts may sound like science fiction, but they’ve actually been in clinical use to help end-stage heart failure patients for more than 35 years – here’s what you should know.

The global supply of donor hearts remains limited, and not everyone who needs a heart transplant will receive a matching donor heart in time.

Recognizing the need for an effective and immediately available alternative to a donor heart, surgeons, medical researchers and inventors began developing early versions of total artificial hearts during the first half of the 20th century.

Here’s what you should know about artificial hearts and their use today.

There have been 13 artificial heart designs used in patients, but only one has received commercial approval from the FDA. Since the first patient implant in 1969, medical teams across the globe have developed 13 different artificial heart designs that have been used in patients.

Among those 13 artificial heart designs, the SynCardia temporary Total Artificial Heart is the only one to receive commercial approval in the U.S., Canada and Europe.

Just like a heart transplant, the SynCardia TAH replaces both lower chambers of the heart and the four heart valves to restore blood flow to the body and eliminate the symptoms and source of heart failure.

Permanent Artificial Hearts: Long-Sought Replacements May Not Be Far Away

The fact is that the best we can currently hope for is a mechanical heart that lets a patient live long enough to find a donor heart.

A permanent implantable artificial heart has long been a goal of medicine, and if recent developments in materials science and electrical engineering have anything to say about it, such a device may soon become a reality.

Heart replacements may someday be as simple as hip replacements, but getting to that point requires understanding the history of mechanical hearts, and why it’s not just as simple as building a pump.

The dream of a mechanical replacement heart lived on, mainly because the demand for healthy human hearts for transplant continued to outstrip supply.

The first so-called total artificial heart to capture widespread attention was the Jarvik-7 heart, which was used for the first time clinically on Barney Clark, a retired dentist with severe congestive heart failure.

It’s also quite possible that advances in battery technology will make implantable power sources possible in the near future; coupled with transdermal inductive charging, the BiVACOR heart and those like it could be the first practical permanent total artificial hearts.

Luckily, the engineering appears to be catching up to where it needs to be for a permanent artificial heart to finally become a reality.

Basics Of Cardiopulmonary Bypass

Blood flows outside the fibre while gases pass inside the fibre, thus separating the blood and gas phases.

Blood cardioplegia is a combination of oxygenated blood and crystalloid in a ratio ranging from 1:1 to 8:1.

Depending on the pre-bypass haemoglobin and priming volume, addition of external blood may be required to maintain a target haematocrit on bypass.

Target haematocrit on CPB = Patient’s blood volume Hct/TCV.Blood required on prime = -/Hct of donor blood.

Heparin-coated cardiopulmonary bypass circuits reduce blood cell trauma.

Laussen PC. Optimal blood gas management during deep hypothermic paediatric cardiac surgery: Alpha-stat is easy, but pH-stat may be preferable.

What Is Cardiopulmonary Bypass?

Use of the heart-lung machine in cardiac surgery is called cardiopulmonary bypass.

Cardiopulmonary bypass provides patients with cardiac and pulmonary support, while bypassing the heart and lungs.

It pumps or circulates the blood through both the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit and the patient.

Once the cannulas from the patient have been connected to the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit, the blood is drained from the veins into the heart-lung machine while the blood is pumped into an artificial lung, which adds oxygen and removes carbon dioxide.

The person responsible for performing cardiopulmonary bypass is called a cardiovascular perfusionist.

Our team of Certified Clinical Perfusionists are highly trained in many different aspects of patient management as it relates to cardiovascular surgery and disease and is skilled in the operation of all equipment used in cardiopulmonary bypass and extracorporeal support.

Modified Ultrafiltration/Hemofiltration: During and after cardiopulmonary bypass, this technique is used to remove extra fluid from the body’s tissue.

Cardiopulmonary Bypass

Cardiopulmonary bypass is a technique in which a machine temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during surgery, maintaining the circulation of blood and the oxygen content of the patient’s body.

Cooled blood usually has a higher viscosity, but the crystalloid solution used to prime the bypass tubing dilutes the blood.

The machine pumps the blood and, using an oxygenator, allows red blood cells to pick up oxygen, as well as allowing carbon dioxide levels to decrease.

Cardiopulmonary bypass consists of two main functional units, the pump and the oxygenator which removes relatively oxygen-depleted blood from a patient’s body and replaces it with oxygen-rich blood through a series of tubes.

Many CPB circuits now employ a centrifugal pump for the maintenance and control of blood flow during CPB. By altering the speed of revolution of the pump head, blood flow is produced by centrifugal force.

Another type of oxygenator gaining favour recently is the heparin-coated blood oxygenator which is believed to produce less systemic inflammation and decrease the propensity for blood to clot in the CPB circuit.

Membrane oxygenators introduce a gas-permeable membrane between blood and oxygen that decreases the blood trauma of direct-contact oxygenators.

Basics Of Cardiopulmonary Bypass

Cardiopulmonary bypass provides a bloodless field for cardiac surgery.

It incorporates an extracorporeal circuit to provide physiological support in which venous blood is drained to a reservoir, oxygenated and sent back to the body using a pump.

Team effort between surgeon, perfusionist and anaesthesiologist is paramount for the successful use of CPB. However, it also has its share of complications and strategies to reduce these complications are the area of the current research.

Keywords: Cardioplegia; cardiopulmonary bypass; heparin; oxygenator; protamine; ultrafiltration.

What Is Cardiopulmonary Bypass?

Cardiopulmonary Bypass is a technique that temporarily takes over the function of the heart and lungs during surgery, maintaining the circulation of blood and the oxygen content of the body.

Cardiopulmonary bypass pumps are operated by perfusionists, medically directed by anesthesiologists, and surgically directed by cardiac surgeons who connect the pump to the patient’s body.

CPB can be used for the induction of total body hypothermia, a state in which the body can be maintained for up to 45 minutes without perfusion.

CPB mechanically circulates and oxygenates blood for the body while bypassing the heart and lungs.

The surgeon places a cannula in right atrium, vena cava, or femoral vein to withdraw blood from the body.

During the procedure, hypothermia is maintained; body temperature is usually kept at 28ºC to 32ºC. The blood is cooled during CPB and returned to the body.

Cooled blood usually has a higher viscosity, but the crystalloid solution used to prime the bypass tubing dilutes the blood.

Cardiopulmonary Bypass And ECMO

Most children who need heart surgery will have to be placed on the heart-lung machine.

CPB is a machine which is surgically connected to the child’s main blood vessels and does the work of the heart and lungs.

We can then open the heart and do the most delicate and complex surgery inside the still, empty heart; during this time, the patient is kept safe by the CPB machine.

At the conclusion of the repair, the heart and lungs are turned back on, the child is weaned off the machine and the machine is surgically disconnected from the child.

Our program has had continuous experience using CPB in open heart surgery for more than 30 years.

For some babies who undergo the heart surgery, a special CPB machine called ECMO is required to support the baby in the first few days after the procedure.

At Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego, we have had a cardiac ECMO program for more than 25 years and have utilized ECMO more than 270 times in heart patients; we have saved many children with this technology who might not have otherwise had a chance.

Then the normal computed tomographic imaging appearances related to cardiopulmonary bypass are presented, followed by the postoperative complications associated with cardiopulmonary bypass that can be detected with CT. The most visible aspect of the OTC Markets Group’s stewardship is the breakdown of the OTC market into three tiers, based on the quality and quantity of the listed companies’ information and disclosures.

OTC Markets Group

For these reasons the SEC views many of the lower-tier companies traded on OTC Markets as “Among the most risky investments” and advises potential investors to heavily research the companies in which they plan to invest.

OTC Markets Group designates securities in one of three markets to indicate the level of financial and corporate disclosure provided by the companies using its quotation system.

To be traded on this tier, companies must undergo a qualitative review by OTC Markets Group.

Companies are not required to be registered with or reporting to the SEC, but they must post financial information with OTC Markets Group.

Since the SEC recognized OTCQX and OTCQB as established public markets, OTC Markets Group has worked collaboratively with state regulators since the 2014 JOBS ACT to apprise them of the easily accessible, free, public online disclosure of current information provided by companies traded on the OTCQX and OTCQB premium markets.

After the passage of Sarbanes-Oxley Act in 2002, some companies delisted and became OTC to save costs and avoid certain regulations, although OTC companies have faced pressure to improve disclosure.

Almost all OTCBB companies are now quoted via OTC Markets’ OTC Link ATS because its fully electronic trading platform better meets the needs of automated broker-dealers.

Nitrile Rubber

Nitrile rubber, also known as nitrile butadiene rubber, NBR, Buna-N, and acrylonitrile butadiene rubber, is a synthetic rubber derived from acrylonitrile and butadiene.

Nitrile rubber is more resistant than natural rubber to oils and acids, and has superior strength, but has inferior flexibility.

Nitrile rubber is less likely to cause an allergic reaction than natural rubber.

Because several monomers capable of propagating the reaction are involved in the production of nitrile rubber the composition of each polymer can vary.

The uses of nitrile rubber include disposable non-latex gloves, automotive transmission belts, hoses, O-rings, gaskets, oil seals, V belts, synthetic leather, printer’s form rollers, and as cable jacketing; NBR latex can also be used in the preparation of adhesives and as a pigment binder.

Hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber is produced by hydrogenation of NBR. Doing so removes the olefinic groups, which are vulnerable to chemical degradation.

An alternative version of NBR is carboxylated nitrile butadiene rubber.

ScienceDirect Topics

Nitrile rubbers may be covulcanized with other unsaturated rubbers.

Stress-time response of the nitrile rubber tested at a true strain rate of −0.5/s.Like the other two elastomers discussed in this chapter, nitrile rubber exhibits significant viscoelasticity and hysteresis making hyperelastic models unable to capture the experimental response.

Increasing the acrylonitrile ratio increases oil resistance of the rubber but decreases its plasticizer compatibility.

Acrylonitrile butadiene rubber rubbers do not crystallize under strain and, without reinforcing fillers, have poor tensile strength and low tear initiation resistance.

Acrylonitrile butadiene rubber /EPDM blends have a better ozone resistance than NBR alone.

The high polarity of NBR also influences its compatibility with certain compounding ingredients, and non-polar rubbers such as SBR and BR. Good adhesion between NBR and textile fabrics can be achieved with NBR lattices or 50:50 blends of NBR and vinyl pyridine lattices in resorcinol formaldehyde dips.

Rubber bellows casings and sealing rings are vulnerable to temperature and are thus limited to a range of between 0° C to 100° C. Rubber is compatible with most industrial chemicals and is particularly useful in the presence of solids.

Properties, Applications And Uses

Nitrile rubber is most popular for its oil resistance, although it’s also tough and temperature resistant.

The amount of oil resistance in nitrile rubber depends on the percentage of acrylonitrile.

Nitrile rubber in general can function in minus 40-degree to 226-degree F temperatures.

Hydrogenated nitrile, a variant of the rubber, can stay resistant to heat and oxidation while remaining flexible at lower temperatures.

Nitrile rubber is popular in applications requiring oil resistance, performance under extreme temperatures, and personal protection.

Nitrile gloves can range from heavy-duty gloves in nuclear applications to the thinner disposable gloves seen in medical, laboratory, and cleaning and examination applications.

Nitrile is only one of many types of rubbers all of which have different characteristics and are suited to different applications.

NBR Rubber,Nitrile Rubber Properties,Applications Of NBR Butadiene

Nitrile Rubber is a synthetic rubber produced by polymerization of acrylonitrile with butadiene.

Nitrile synthetic rubber is also known as NBR, acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber, acrylonitrile rubber, nitrile-butadiene rubber, and NR. This type of synthetic rubber is widely used in a number of applications.

Industrial nitrile rubber is one of the very sought after variety of synthetic rubber by most of the manufaturing units.

In the year 2005, worldwide consumption of NBR had reached almost 368,000 metric tons annually and the global market for nitrile butadiene rubber has been forecast to exceed 645 thousand tons by the year 2017.

What is Nitrile Rubber? Nitrile rubber or NBR is a synthetic rubber copolymer of acrylonitrile and butadiene.

NBR or the nitrile synthetic rubber is considered the workhorse of the rubber products of the automotive and other industrial units.

Go to the Rubber Goods Suppliers Directory and find nitrile synthetic rubber manufacturers and suppliers.

Properties, Applications, Uses

PROPERTIES OF NITRILE RUBBER. Oil resistance is the most common feature of nitrile rubber but it is also durable and temperature resistant.

APPLICATIONS OF NITRILE RUBBER. Nitrile rubber is commonly used in applications that require oil resistance, extreme temperature efficiency, and personal safety.

Nitrile gloves vary in thickness from heavy-duty gloves used in nuclear applications to thinner disposable gloves used in medical, laboratory, and cleaning.

NBR is a suitable material for aeronautical applications because it can withstand temperatures ranging from -40 to 108 °C. Molded products, boots, adhesives, sealants, extended foams, and floor mats are all manufactured with nitrile butadiene.

Because of its excellent hand safety properties and the fact it is latex-free, nitrile has surpassed latex as the best glove production content.

CONCLUSION. We hope you can use this knowledge to source more efficiently for your needs, now that we have covered the basics of nitrile rubber, such as what it is, its properties and its applications.

Nitrile is only one of the several common types of rubbers, each with its own set of characteristics and applications.

Nitrile 70, Nitrile Rubber Properties, Nitrile Specifications

Here you will find our Nitrile specifications chart which can also be downloaded in PDF. The Nitrile rubber properties that are listed below are for our most popular Nitrile 70 durometer rubber material compound.

Make sure you review all of our other popular materials to make sure that the material you choose is correct for your application.

If you need properties that are slightly different than the ones listed below, we can compound the formulation of the rubber material so that the Nitrile rubber specifications suit your needs.

This is due to Nitrile’s compatibility with most environments as well as it’s relative cost compared to other rubber materials.

Mykin’s RN00170, Nitrile 70 durometer, is a general purpose copolymer of butadiene and acrylonitrile.

This compound has a relatively high acrylo content, making it exceptionally resistant to petroleum base oils and hydrocarbon fuels over a temperature range of -40°F to +250°F. Nitrile has good mechanical properties when compared with other elastomers and high wear resistance.

Unless they are specially compounded, Nitrile is not resistant to weathering, sunlight and ozone.

Understanding Urine Tests

Five standard urine tests can be used to examine the different components of urine.

You take a sample of midstream urine by interrupting the flow of urine after a few seconds and then collecting this middle portion of the urine in a cup.

A rapid urine test is the quickest way to test urine.

A urine culture is a test done in a laboratory to see whether urine has germs in it.

Urine cultures can be done to test whether there are bacteria or fungi in urine.

Urine cultures are usually done to detect bacteria and fungi in urine when testing for a urinary tract infection.

If bacteria are found during laboratory testing, then the type of antibiotic needed is usually determined at the same time.24-hour urine collectionWhat is 24-hour urine collection?

Clinical Urine Tests

Clinical urine tests are examinations of the physical and chemical properties of urine and its microscopic appearance to aid in medical diagnosis.

The term urinalysis-a portmanteau of the words urine and analysis -generally refers to the gross examination of the urine, chemical evaluation using urine test strips, and microscopic examination.

441  Other analyses routinely performed on urine samples include urine electrolyte levels, drug testing, pregnancy testing and microbiological culture.

Urinalysis involves assessment of the physical properties of urine, such as color and clarity; chemical analysis using a urine test strip; and microscopic examination.

Test strips contain pads impregnated with chemical compounds that change color when they interact with specific elements in the urine; for example, nitrite, a compound produced by some bacteria that cause urinary tract infections, and leukocyte esterase, an enzyme found in white blood cells which acts as an indicator of the number of WBCs in the urine.

The odor of urine can normally vary from odorless to a much stronger odor when the subject is dehydrated and the urine is concentrated.

Although glucose is easily filtered in the glomerulus, it is not present in the urine because all of the glucose filtered is normally reabsorbed from the renal tubules back into the blood.

Urine Tests

You will provide a sample of urine in a special cup for a urine test.

Urine tests are when a doctor examines a small amount of your urine to check for signs of kidney disease and other health problems.

A urine test is also called urine analysis or urinalysis.

Visual exam: Doctors look at the urine sample to: See its color – dark yellow or brown urine can be a sign of a problem.

Urine culture: If you have a kidney infection or UTI, a urine culture can show what type of bacteria is present.

24-hour urine test: You give urine samples in a period of 24 hours, in one1 or more containers.

You may have a urine test at your doctor’s office, or your doctor may give you urine sample cups and sterile wipes to collect urine at home.

Mayo Clinic

A urinalysis might be requested if you have abdominal pain, back pain, frequent or painful urination, blood in your urine, or other urinary problems.

If you’ve been diagnosed with a medical condition, such as kidney disease or a urinary tract infection, your doctor might recommend testing your urine regularly to monitor your condition and treatment.

You might collect a urine sample at home or at your health care provider’s office.

You might be asked to collect the sample at home first thing in the morning, when your urine is more concentrated.

Small increases in protein in urine usually aren’t a cause for concern, but larger amounts might indicate a kidney problem.

Bilirubin in your urine might indicate liver damage or disease.

Sometimes performed as part of a urinalysis, this test involves viewing drops of concentrated urine – urine that’s been spun in a machine – under a microscope.

Clinical Interpretation Of Urine Drug Tests: What Clinicians Need To Know About Urine Drug Screens

Urine drug testing is frequently used in clinical, employment, educational, and legal settings and misinterpretation of test results can result in significant adverse consequences for the individual who is being tested.

Advances in drug testing technology combined with a rise in the number of novel misused substances present challenges to clinicians to appropriately interpret urine drug test results.

Authors searched PubMed and Google Scholar to identify published literature written in English between 1946 and 2016, using urine drug test, screen, false-positive, false-negative, abuse, and individual drugs of abuse as key words.

Cited references were also used to identify the relevant literature.

In this report, we review technical information related to detection methods of urine drug tests that are commonly used and provide an overview of false-positive/false-negative data for commonly misused substances in the following categories: cannabinoids, central nervous system depressants, CNS stimulants, hallucinogens, designer drugs, and herbal drugs of abuse.

We also present brief discussions of alcohol and tricyclic antidepressants as related to urine drug tests, for completeness.

The goal of this review was to provide a useful tool for clinicians when interpreting urine drug test results and making appropriate clinical decisions on the basis of the information presented.

Urinalysis Test Strips, Interpretation Of Results, Definition

A urinalysis test is performed by collecting a urine sample from the patient in a specimen cup.

Urine infection is generally diagnosed based on results of urinalysis.

The entire test strip is dipped in the urine sample and color changes in each square are noted.

The reference for color changes is posted on the plastic bottle container of the urine test strips.

Microscopic urinalysis is done simply pouring the urine sample into a test tube and centrifuging it for a few minutes.

The solid part left in the bottom of the test tube is mixed with the remaining drop of urine in the test tube and one drop is analyzed under a microscope.

Urine pregnancy test is very common and it measures a hormone in the urine associated with pregnancy.

Glioblastoma: Overview Of Disease And Treatment

Electromagnetic fields, formalde-hyde, and nonionizing radiation from cell phones have not been proven to lead to GBM. An increased risk of glioma development is seen in some specific genetic diseases, such as neurofibromatosis 1 and 2, tuberous sclerosis, Li-Fraumeni syndrome, retinoblastoma, and Turcot syndrome; however, less than 1% of patients with a glioma have a known hereditary disease.

A seizure is the presenting symptom in as many as 25% of patients and can occur at a later stage of the disease in as many as 50% of patients.

Despite maximal initial resection and multimodality therapy, about 70% of GBM patients will experience disease progression within one year of diagnosis, with less than 5% of patients surviving five years after diagnosis.

Hopefully, the results of these trials and other novel approaches may lead to increased survival and enhanced quality of life for patients with GBM.GBMs are very aggressive tumors, accompanied by an array of complications related to the underlying disease and treatment.

Effective symptom management, a focus on improved quality of life, and novel therapeutic treatment approaches may offer renewed hope to patients with GBM and their families.

Celldex Therapeutics, Inc Data safety and monitoring board recommends Celldex’s phase 3 study of RINTEGA® in newly diagnosed glioblastoma be discontinued as it is unlikely to meet primary overall survival endpoint in patients with minimal residual disease.

Kuhnt D, Becker A, Ganslandt O, Bauer M, Buchfelder M, Nimsky C. Correlation of the extent of tumor volume resection and patient survival in surgery of glioblastoma multiforme with high-field intraoperative MRI guidance.

Glioblastoma: Survival Rates, Treatments, And Causes

Glioblastoma is a type of very aggressive brain tumor.

Glioblastoma is one of a group of tumors called astrocytomas.

These tumors start in astrocytes – star-shaped cells that nourish and support nerve cells in your brain.

A glioblastoma can contain many different types of brain cells – including dead brain cells.

The grade indicates how fast the tumor is likely to grow and spread. A grade 4 tumor is the most aggressive and fastest-growing type.

People whose tumors have a favorable genetic marker called MGMT methylation have better survival rates.

Some treatments may work well on some cells, but not on others.

The Last 10 Days Of Patients With Glioblastoma: Assessment Of Clinical Signs And Symptoms As Well As Treatment

Little is known regarding the clinical signs and symptoms of dying patients with glioblastoma.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate signs and symptoms as well as therapeutic strategies in patients with glioblastoma in the end-of-life phase in order to improve end-of-life care.

Results: A total of 57 patients, who died due to glioblastoma in a hospital setting, were included.

The most frequent signs and symptoms in the last 10 days before death were decrease in level of consciousness, fever, dysphagia, seizures, and headache.

Steroids were given to 56%. Conclusion: Due to a decrease in level of consciousness and cognitive impairment, assessment of clinical signs and symptoms such as headache at the end of life is difficult.

Based on the signs and symptoms in the last days before death in patients with glioblastoma, supportive drug treatment remains challenging.

Our study emphasizes the importance of standardized guidelines for end-of-life care in patients with glioblastoma.

Symptoms And Causes

Brain tumors can begin in your brain, or cancer can begin in other parts of your body and spread to your brain as secondary brain tumors.

Brain tumor treatment options depend on the type of brain tumor you have, as well as its size and location.

The signs and symptoms of a brain tumor vary greatly and depend on the brain tumor’s size, location and rate of growth.

In adults, primary brain tumors are much less common than are secondary brain tumors, in which cancer begins elsewhere and spreads to the brain.

Secondary brain tumors are tumors that result from cancer that starts elsewhere in your body and then spreads to your brain.

In adults, secondary brain tumors are far more common than are primary brain tumors.

A small portion of brain tumors occurs in people with a family history of brain tumors or a family history of genetic syndromes that increase the risk of brain tumors.

Classifications, Symptoms, Diagnosis And Treatments

A brain tumor, known as an intracranial tumor, is an abnormal mass of tissue in which cells grow and multiply uncontrollably, seemingly unchecked by the mechanisms that control normal cells.

More than 150 different brain tumors have been documented, but the two main groups of brain tumors are termed primary and metastatic.

Primary brain tumors include tumors that originate from the tissues of the brain or the brain’s immediate surroundings.

Metastatic brain tumors include tumors that arise elsewhere in the body and migrate to the brain, usually through the bloodstream.

Gliomas are the most prevalent type of adult brain tumor, accounting for 78 percent of malignant brain tumors.

According to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, approximately 4,200 children are diagnosed with a brain tumor in the U.S. Seventy-two percent of children diagnosed with a brain tumor are younger than age 15.

In some cases, growth modifiers have been used to attempt to stop the growth of tumors resistant to other treatments.

Brain Tumor

A brain tumor occurs when abnormal cells form within the brain.

All types of brain tumors may produce symptoms that vary depending on the size of the tumor and the part of the brain that is involved.

The average five-year survival rate for all brain cancers in the United States is 33%. Secondary, or metastatic, brain tumors are about four times as common as primary brain tumors, with about half of metastases coming from lung cancer.

Mutations and deletions of tumor suppressor genes, such as P53, are thought to be the cause of some forms of brain tumor.

Though not technically a tumor of brain tissue, they are often considered brain tumors since they protrude into the space where the brain is, causing symptoms.

These techniques cannot alone diagnose high- versus low-grade gliomas, and thus the definitive diagnosis of brain tumor should only be confirmed by histological examination of tumor tissue samples obtained either by means of brain biopsy or open surgery.

Infiltration is the behavior of the tumor either to grow tentacles that push into the surrounding tissue or to have tumor cells “Seeded” into the tissue beyond the circumference of the tumorous mass; this does not mean that an infiltrative tumor does not take up space or does not compress the surrounding tissue as it grows, but an infiltrating neoplasm makes it difficult to say where the tumor ends and the healthy tissue starts… metastasis.

Johns Hopkins Medicine

Meningioma is the most common primary brain tumor, accounting for more than 30% of all brain tumors.

Adenoma, a type of tumor that grows in the gland tissues, is the most common type of pituitary tumor.

Choroid plexus tumors are rare tumors that are found in the choroid plexus – the part of the brain within its ventricles that produces cerebrospinal fluid.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors are rare benign tumors that occur in the tissues covering the brain and spinal cord.

Some types of germ cell tumors include germinomas, embryonal carcinomas, Yolk sac tumors and teratomas.

Pineal tumors are those tumors that appear in the region of the pineal gland.

There are different types of pineal tumors with distinct behaviors, including pineocytomas, pineal parenchymal tumors of intermediate differentiation, and pinealoblastomas.

Brain Tumor: Types, Risk Factors, Symptoms, And Treatment

A brain tumor is a collection, or mass, of abnormal cells in your brain.

A secondary brain tumor, also known as a metastatic brain tumor, occurs when cancer cells spread to your brain from another organ, such as your lung or breast.

The risk for most types of brain tumors increases with age.

Symptoms of brain tumors depend on the location and size of the tumor.

You’ll have noticeable symptoms when a growing tumor is putting pressure on your brain tissue.

If you’ve received a brain tumor diagnosis, there are several questions you may want to ask your care team before, during, and after treatment.

The Best Smart Thermostats For 2022

Not all smart thermostats are created equal; some are designed for simple heating and cooling systems and offer basic scheduling and programming options, while others are designed for complex multi-stage systems and will control heating, cooling, dehumidifier, and ventilation systems.

Smart thermostats offer a variety of features that will not only help keep your home comfortable, but can reduce heating and cooling costs.

Many of the latest smart thermostats support Amazon Alexa, Apple Siri, and Google Assistant voice commands, letting you to do things like change temperature settings and find out the current temperature using your voice.

Smart thermostats are usually very easy to install, but it’s important to know how your system is wired before you begin.

Most smart thermostats can be used with multi-stage heating and cooling systems, but if you’ll be controlling other components such as whole-house dehumidifiers, heat pumps, and ventilation systems, make sure you select a thermostat that supports those devices.

Almost all smart thermostats require a C wire to work, but older houses with older heating systems usually don’t have a C wire because older thermostats did not require one.

Some smart thermostats come with a power extender kit that you can install yourself to supply power to the device.

Amazon.Com: Smart Thermostat

Smart thermostats let you control the heating and air conditioning in your home from an app, with your voice, or right on the thermostat.

Many of these devices can also connect with other smart technology in your home, such as Alexa-enabled devices, to create a conveniently voice-controlled house.

Plus, a smart thermostat can create a heating and cooling schedule to save energy in your home.

Below, we rounded up the best smart thermostats you can buy on Amazon.

The Best Smart Thermostat

A smart thermostat does a lot more than just manage your home’s heating and cooling system.

Chris Monroe/CNET. The Amazon Smart Thermostat is the least expensive smart thermostat I’ve tested.

The Amazon Smart Thermostat isn’t compatible with Google Assistant or Apple HomeKit and there’s no remote temperature sensor accessory.

Chris Monroe/CNET. The Honeywell Home T9 is a $200 Wi-Fi thermostat with a touchscreen and one smart room sensor.

I can say that the four smart thermostats I recommend above – the Amazon Smart Thermostat, the Ecobee SmartThermostat with Voice Control, the Resideo Honeywell Home T9 and the Nest Learning Thermostat – all performed reliably during my testing.

Installations can vary widely from thermostat to thermostat and between HVAC systems, but there are some basic steps required for installing these devices.

How well does the app work? Is it easy to navigate to the thermostat settings you need? Is it simple to create a schedule or enable geofencing? This factors into the thermostat’s usability score, along with how simple the thermostat hardware itself is to control manually.

Best Smart Thermostats In 2022

As we awake from our winter slumber and things start to heat up, one of the best smart thermostats will help keep your home at just the right temperature during those warm spring days but cold spring nights.

Which one should you choose? We’ve rounded up a list of the best smart thermostats.

This thermostat combines the best of the past with the future, and is one of the best smart thermostats that’s Google Home compatible.

The Honeywell RTH6580WF Wi-Fi Thermostat is the best smart thermostat for those on a budget, because offers much of the same functionality as higher-end models, but costs less than $100. Like the Nest and Ecobee smart thermostats, you can control the Honeywell RTH6580WF from your smartphone, and connect it to Alexa and Google Assistant, which not only lets you change the temperature with your voice, but link it with other smart home products.

Most smart thermostats are designed for homes that have central heating and cooling systems, but what if you live in an older house or apartment, and rely on window air conditioners to keep things cool? There are a few companies that make smart thermostats for this purpose, and of them we think the Sensibo Sky is the best smart thermostat for those with in-wall or window air conditioners that have IR remotes.

The Honeywell T9 incorporates what we think is one of the best features for smart thermostats: Remote sensors that can measure the temperature and see if there’s a person present, so that the thermostat can better adjust your HVAC system to make sure all rooms are comfortable.

If your home has two-stage heating and cooling, then these will be the best smart thermostats for you.

Smart Thermostats: What You Need To Know

While smart thermostats are generally a great investment, they aren’t for everyone! For example, if you live in a home without central air conditioning, a smart thermostat likely isn’t worth the investment.

Smart thermostats can also be more difficult to install in older homes, especially if you don’t have a common wire, or C-Wire, which connects your smart thermostat to your heating and cooling system.

Some companies do make smart thermostats that don’t require C-Wires, but you’ll want to make sure that your heating and cooling system is compatible with whatever smart thermostat you choose.

Every smart thermostat includes added functionality over traditional thermostats, but they’re not all created equal! We’ll explain some of the key factors to consider when deciding between smart thermostat products.

If you’re asking Alexa to play music for you, why not ask her to change the temperature too? Depending on the smart home software you use, your smart thermostat may be able to access features such as voice control and alerts that are built into your smart home setup.

Computers these days are able to adjust to your habits – and smart thermostats are no different! After you request temperatures for specific times of the day a few times, smart thermostats with advanced learning will understand your habits and can make the adjustment for you.

Honeywell has become a dominant player in the smart thermostat industry and Mysa has gained a lot of traction as well with their Smart Thermostat for Electric Baseboard Heaters.

Smart Thermostat

It became the goal of smart thermostats to address these issues by taking the human out of the picture and creating a thermostat that uses smart computing to truly reduce energy usage and cost.

Development of the smart thermostat began in 2007 with the creation of the ecobee thermostat.

In these models, the smart thermostat is compared to a thermostat set at a constant temperature, and savings are calculated.

The most energy-conscious customers are the ones more likely to have had efficient thermostat settings the savings that they receive from the smart thermostat may not be as great.

One of the main features of the smart thermostat is the ability to change the temperature when the sensor in the thermostat does not sense an occupant.

The study compared a standard smart thermostat and the multiple sensor system to a manual thermostat.

Many housing corporations and smart thermostat developers realize the potential of smart thermostats to save energy, and have developed programs to advance sustainability through smarter technology.

Marshmallow

Confectioners in early 19th century France pioneered the innovation of whipping up the marshmallow sap and sweetening it to make a confection similar to modern marshmallow.

In this process, which Doumak patented in 1956, marshmallow mixture is pumped through extrusion heads with numerous ports aligned next to each other which form continuous “Ropes” of marshmallow.

This is why the omission of gelatin from a marshmallow recipe will result in marshmallow creme, since there is no gelatin network to trap the water and air bubbles.

In a marshmallow aerator, pins on a rotating cylinder intermesh with stationary pins on the wall provide the shear forces necessary to break the large injected air bubbles into numerous tiny bubbles that provide the smooth, fine-grained texture of the marshmallow.

The traditional marshmallow recipe uses powdered marshmallow root, but most commercially manufactured marshmallows instead use gelatin in their manufacture.

Marshmallow creme and other less firm marshmallow products generally contain little or no gelatin, which mainly serves to allow the familiar marshmallow confection to retain its shape.

Several brands of vegetarian and vegan marshmallows and marshmallow fluff exist.

Add the sugar and cornstarch mixture and move around to completely coat the bottom and sides of the pan.

Dust the top with enough of the remaining sugar and cornstarch mixture to lightly cover.

Turn the marshmallows out onto a cutting board and cut into 1-inch squares using a pizza wheel dusted with the confectioners’ sugar mixture.

Line 4 half sheet pans with parchment paper, spray the paper with nonstick cooking spray and dust with the confectioners’ sugar mixture.

Sprinkle the tops with enough of the remaining cornstarch and sugar mixture to lightly cover.

Cut into 1/2 inch pieces using a pizza wheel or scissors dusted with the confectioners’ sugar mixture.

Once cut, lightly dust all sides of each marshmallow with the remaining sugar mixture and store in an airtight container for up to a week.

What Are Marshmallows Made Of?

How is this possible? It’s all because of what marshmallows are made of.

Marshmallows are made of sugar and corn syrup, and, whether they’re made at a candy factory or you make them at home, they also contain gelatin.

Air isn’t typically considered an ingredient, but with marshmallows and other items like whipped cream, meringue, angel food cake, and even scrambled eggs, whipped air is the component that makes the texture of a marshmallow possible.

The process for making marshmallows involves combining sugar, corn syrup, and water and then bringing that mixture to a boil.

The sugar syrup makes the marshmallows sweet and, when heated to a specific temperature, helps give them their texture.

Marshmallows were made by hand, which, in addition to being labor-intensive, took quite a bit longer owing to the fact that the individual marshmallows required several hours of “Sweating” in order for them to form their outer skin.

Back in the 1950s, Peeps were made by hand by squeezing the marshmallow creme mixture through pastry bags onto a bed of colored sugar-which is how you would do it if you were making your own homemade Peeps.

International Energy Agency

The International Energy Agency is an international energy forum comprised of 29 industrialized countries under the Organization for Economic Development and Cooperation.

IEA’s mandate has expanded over time to include tracking and analyzing global key energy trends, promoting sound energy policy, and fostering multinational energy technology cooperation.

As the global energy picture has changed, the IEA has sought to engage key non-members in its activities, including Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, South Africa, Thailand, Singapore, Morocco and accession countries Mexico and Chile.

The IEA’s energy analyses, international data collection, and coordinated collective emergency response capabilities are unique and highly regarded.

The United States Government values IEA’s policy analyses and data collection, coordinated collective emergency response and partnership on key projects and analysis with other international organizations and initiatives, such as the G-20/G-7, the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum, the Clean Energy Ministerial and the International Partnership for Energy Efficiency Cooperation.

Serves as a convener and leader of international cooperation on energy research and technology.

Guides IEA analyses of country energy policies and shares best practices.

International Energy Agency

The Energy Watch Group, a coalition of scientists and politicians which analyses official energy industry predictions, claims that the IEA has had an institutional bias towards traditional energy sources and has been using “Misleading data” to undermine the case for renewable energy, such as wind and solar.

Amid discontent from across the renewables sector at the IEA’s performance as a global energy watchdog, the International Renewable Energy Agency was formed on January 26, 2009.

The International Energy Agency acts as energy policy advisor to 29 member countries plus the European Commission, in their effort to ensure reliable, affordable, and clean energy for their citizens.

As energy markets have changed, so has the IEA. Current work focuses on climate change policies, market reform, energy technology collaboration and outreach to the rest of the world, especially major producers and consumers of energy like China, India, Russia and the OPEC countries.

For the first time in 2012, an annual medium-term report which analyses the renewable energy sector will be published by the IEA. This publication on renewable energy – “Which is now the fastest growing sector of the energy mix and accounts for almost a fifth of all electricity produced worldwide – will join annual medium-term reports on oil, gas and coal, which the IEA already produces”.

As of 2015, there are 28 members, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, United States, as well as EPIA, European Union, International Copper Association, SEIA and SEPA. The IEA’s Energy Conservation through Energy Storage Programme has completed 20 developmental annexes covering seasonal thermal energy storage as sensible heat, as well as storage of thermal energy and electrical energy.

At the Heiligendamm Summit in June 2007, the G8 acknowledged an EU proposal for an international initiative on energy efficiency proposed in March 2007, and agreed to explore, together with the IEA, the most effective means to promote energy efficiency internationally.

International Energy Agency

The International Energy Agency defines biorefineries in the IEA Bioenergy Task 42 on Biorefineries, as “The sustainable processing of biomass into a spectrum of marketable products and energy”.

The IEAGHG R&D Programme is an international collaborative research program established in 1991 as an Implementing Agreement under the International Energy Agency.

A review of the energy economies of member countries during the first ten years of the IEA was published in 1985.The IEA provides an energy information network within its member countries and publishes annual and quarterly statistical reports on oil and gas, coal and overall energy supply, consumption, prices and taxes,.

Until 2020, electricity generated from hydroenergy still dominates renewable energy-driven electricity generation, and wind energy and solar energy will share ∼22% and ∼16% of global renewable energy used for electricity generation, respectively.

In 2050, renewable energy-driven electricity generation is expected to be dominated by solar energy, wind energy and hydroenergy, in which hydroenergy is expected to share less than solar and wind energy in global renewable energy used for electricity generation.

Solar energy is expected to be the largest renewable energy sources used for electricity generation, that is, ∼38%. The share of wind energy could be slightly lower than that of solar energy, ∼31%. Almost 70% of renewable energy-driven electricity generation is expected to come from solar energy and wind energy.

Considering the features of intermittency and fluctuation, the wide application of solar energy and wind energy needs scale-flexible and operation-flexible energy storage systems to balance renewable energy output and end-use electricity demand.

Origin, Objectives And Conducting Bodies

Today IEA has expanded and evolved to be at the heart of global dialogue on energy, examining the spectrum of energy issues to advocate policies and ensure affordability, reliability & sustainability of energy among its member countries.

As per the report, over the next two decades, India will make up the biggest share of energy demand growth at 25%. Presently, India is the fourth-largest global energy consumer behind China, the United States and the European Union.

Prior to the global pandemic, India’s energy demand was projected to increase by almost 50% between 2019 and 2030, but growth over this period is now closer to 35%. Objectives of IEA. The International Energy Agency was established with an objective to coordinate the response of the participating states to the world energy crisis along with developing a mechanism for oil-sharing for use during supply difficulties.

IEA mainly focuses on its energy policies which include economic development, energy security and environmental protection.

Helping India to take forward the International Solar Alliance framework to other countries through a greater partnership with IEA. To help India in achieving its vision of ensuring 24×7 affordable and environment-friendly ‘Power for All’ with increased engagement with IEA. To enable India in setting up its own robust integrated database on energy.

Though the threat to the new energy crisis reduced with the global recession, oil glut and increased efficiency, the IEA warned against energy conservation “Complacency” in the 1980s.

The IEA energy ministers agreed in March 1991 to meet regularly after the Gulf War to discuss environmental concerns and ways to increase energy efficiency with their counterparts in non-IEA countries.

International Energy Agency Looked At How To Wean Nations Off Russia’S Fossil Fuels

Russia’s war on Ukraine has roiled the world’s energy markets, and it added urgency to an already scheduled meeting of the International Energy Agency.

Ministers and industry executives were supposed to talk about climate targets, but they had to confront the more immediate task of finding new sources of energy to replace Russia’s fossil fuels.

ELEANOR BEARDSLEY, BYLINE: As the meeting at the International Energy Agency wrapped up Thursday, IEA Director Fatih Birol said the two-day session was dominated by one overriding sentiment among the 31 member nations.

U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said Europeans can expect help from the U.S. JENNIFER GRANHOLM: We’ve delivered a clear message to our domestic oil and gas companies.

BEARDSLEY: IEA member countries have already released 60 million barrels of oil from their reserves, and the body produced a pamphlet to help European consumers cut their reliance on Russian energy imports.

BEARDSLEY: Ukraine’s deputy minister of energy for European integration, Yaroslav Demchenkov, traveled to Paris from Kyiv with a warning.

Attendees say Russia’s war is proof the world needs to transition to cleaner energy.

Natera: Pioneers In Deceptive Medical Billing – Hindenburg Research

Based on more than 2 dozen interviews with former Natera employees, patients and industry experts, a review of hundreds of online complaints, FOIA requests to state Medicaid offices and state Attorneys General, and the company’s financial filings, we show how Natera’s revenue growth has been fueled by deceptive sales and billing practices aimed at doctors, insurance companies and expectant mothers.

In 2018, Natera paid $11 million to settle Department of Justice fraud allegations relating to improper sales & billing of Panorama, its key NIPT test, between 2013 and 2016.In late 2017, payors imposed “Prior authorization” requirements for Natera’s tests to curb excessive billing.

Our findings indicate that Natera has engaged in a grab bag of deceptive billing practices on its quest to satisfy its shareholders’ desires for ever-increasing revenue.

Payors don’t want to reimburse for screens that aren’t medically necessary, but rather than working within this reality, Natera has used the murky world of medical billing to apply a behind-the-scenes “Do whatever it takes” approach to keep its short-term numbers rosy.

Following our March 9th report entitled “Natera: Pioneers In Deceptive Medical Billing”, the company responded with a brief press release.

How does Natera get paid for microdeletion screening when it’s not covered by payors? In other words, will Natera confirm that it bills women in cash separately for microdeletion screening? And if so, in what way does Natera clearly disclose this to practitioners and customers?

Does Natera send billing codes to MGML, or do the practitioners enter the coding information? What other information does Natera provide to MGML?Does MGML make clear in its prior authorization submissions that it is acting as a third party rather than posing as practitioners?

Lung Transplant

A lung transplant is a surgical procedure to replace a diseased or failing lung with a healthy lung, usually from a deceased donor.

Preparations for a lung transplant often begin long before the surgery to place a transplanted lung.

You may begin preparing for a lung transplant weeks, months or years before you receive a donor lung, depending upon the waiting time for a transplant.

Consider the number of lung transplants a center performs each year and transplant recipient survival rates by reviewing a database on the web maintained by the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients.

Once you decide where you would like to have your lung transplant, you’ll need to have an evaluation to see if you’re eligible for a lung transplant.

Your transplant team will also discuss with you the benefits and risks of a transplant and what to expect before, during and after a transplant.

If the transplant team determines that you’re a candidate for a lung transplant, the transplant center will register you and place your name on a waiting list.

Johns Hopkins Medicine

A lung transplant is surgery done to remove a diseased lung and replace it with a healthy lung from another person.

A lung transplant is not advised as a treatment for lung cancer.

To allow the transplanted organ to survive in a new body, medicines are used to trick the immune system into not attacking the transplant.

To get a lung from an organ donor who has died, you will first be evaluated by a transplant team.

The transplant team will consider all information from interviews, your medical history, physical exam, and diagnostic tests in deciding your eligibility for a lung transplant.

For a single lung transplant, the incision will be made on the side of chest where the lung will be replaced.

Depending on your lung condition and the type of transplant being done, you may be put on a cardiopulmonary bypass machine.

Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation

A Lung Allocation Score is given to each patient who is added to the waiting list.

Some of the factors used in calculating the score are your age, oxygen requirement, pulmonary function test results, distance walked in six minutes, and type of lung disease you have.

If some of these factors change while you’re on the waiting list, your transplant team will update your LAS. When patients are placed on the waiting list, they’re registered in a centralized, national computer network that links all donors and transplant candidates.

Once the transplant surgeon for a matched recipient approves the lung, it’s transported to the recipient’s hospital at the same time the patient is being prepared for surgery.

The average time on the waiting list for patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is three to six months, but an individual patient’s wait time is dependent on how advanced the disease is at the time of listing.

It’s not possible to predict how long a patient will wait before a compatible lung becomes available.

Lungs must be transplanted soon after donation, so timing is critical.

Michigan Medicine

At the University of Michigan Transplant Center, we provide the newest treatment options for people with end-stage lung disease-including access to clinical trials-and have performed more than 700 lung transplants.

We are the oldest and largest lung transplant program in the state of Michigan.

While lung transplantation at the University of Michigan was officially designated as a program under the umbrella of the Transplant Center in 1990, the first revolutionary effort at lung transplantation in Michigan was performed here in 1969.

Because of the fragility of the lung, the survival rates for lung transplant patients are not as good as for other solid organ transplants, with a five-year survival rate of about 50-60%. The biggest limiting factor in lung transplant is having enough suitable lung donors.

Lung Transplantation

Lung transplantation is the only definitive therapy for many forms of end-stage lung diseases.

The success of lung transplantation is limited by many factors: Too few lungs available for transplantation due to limited donors or injury to the donor lung; current methods of preservation of excised lungs do not allow extended periods of time between procurement and implantation; acute graft failure is more common with lungs than other solid organs, thus contributing to poorer short-term survival after lung transplant compared with that for recipients of other organs; lung transplant recipients are particularly vulnerable to pulmonary infections; and chronic allograft dysfunction, manifest by bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome, is frequent and limits long-term survival.

Two factors impede progress to address these problems: lung transplant centers lack the infrastructure to facilitate prospective, multicenter clinical studies of sufficient power to address clinical questions and there are too few investigators studying the biology of lung transplantation.

If the number of lungs for transplant were unlimited, many more lives could be enhanced or extended, and progress would be accelerated in other areas of investigation, including clinical studies of the mechanisms underlying acute lung injury and chronic allograft dysfunction/BOS. In addition, indications for lung transplantation might be extended to individuals who currently are not considered candidates due to the organ shortage.

Sphingosine 1-phosphate, a platelet-derived phospholipid growth factor, is involved in both angiogenesis and vascular hemostasis and recently has been shown to prevent lung edema in models of LPS-induced lung injury and ventilator-induced lung injury.

Lung transplantation is a relatively new field aimed at the treatment of end-stage lung failure.

Brigham And Women’S Hospital

The Brigham and Women’s Hospital Lung Transplant Program, the largest program in New England over the past decade, is committed to providing the most innovative, effective, and compassionate care to our patients with advanced lung disease.

Our program has been the source of several transplant milestones, including the first adult lung transplant in Massachusetts and the first bilateral lung transplant in New England.

Building upon these groundbreaking efforts, we continue to work to provide the best possible outcomes for our patients by providing the most advanced therapies available, teaching tomorrow’s leaders in lung transplantation, and studying new methods for improving transplantation.

We begin by doing everything possible to effectively improve lung function without a lung transplant.

When a lung transplant is considered to be the best solution for a patient, we work with them and their families to develop an individualized care plan and to make each step of the transplant process as comfortable as possible.

In the last five years, our Program’s one-year outcomes have consistently exceeded Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services benchmarks, and our three-year survival rates routinely meet targeted thresholds.

These outcomes are particularly noteworthy, as our Program is willing to take on higher-risk candidates that other programs may turn away.

Lung Transplantation

Lung transplantation is the therapeutic measure of last resort for patients with end-stage lung disease who have exhausted all other available treatments without improvement.

A lobe transplant is a surgery in which part of a living or deceased donor’s lung is removed and used to replace the recipient’s diseased lung.

A single lung transplant takes about four to eight hours, while a double lung transplant takes about six to twelve hours to complete.

In a single-lung transplant the process starts out after the donor lung has been inspected and the decision to accept the donor lung for the patient has been made.

In the case of a singular lung transplant the lung is collapsed, the blood vessels in the lung tied off, and the lung removed at the bronchial tube.

In the case of a sequential transplant the recipient’s lung with the poorest lung functions is collapsed, the blood vessels tied off, and cut at the corresponding bronchi.

Survival rate after a lung transplant 1 year survival 5 years survival 10 years survival Lung transplant 83.6% 53.4% 28.4% Heart-lung transplant 73.8% 46.5% 28.3%. Transplanted lungs typically last three to five years before showing signs of failure.

Hammes is credited with inventing the “In-sink” food waste disposal in 1927 for his wife.

His company was called the In-Sink-Erator Manufacturing Company.

Emerson, a global technology and engineering company which serves industrial, commercial, and consumer markets acquired the company in 1968 and made it a division of its Emerson Appliance Solutions.

5 Best Garbage Disposals

With a garbage disposal, most leftover food can be put down the drain.

Garbage disposals are low-energy devices, and they help reduce overall food waste.

Types of garbage disposalsContinuous feed garbage disposals.

The most popular type of garbage disposal, you only need to flip a switch to grind up your leftovers with a continuous feed disposal.

Inexpensive garbage disposals are made of less durable materials like aluminum.

Some garbage disposals have extra features to avoid clogging up the system.

A few garbage disposals can be hooked up to your dishwasher, so you don’t have to worry about rinsing and scraping off food residue before loading dishes.

Garbage Disposal Unit

A garbage disposal unit is a device, usually electrically powered, installed under a kitchen sink between the sink’s drain and the trap.

The disposal unit shreds food waste into pieces small enough-generally less than 2 mm in diameter-to pass through plumbing.

The garbage disposal unit was invented in 1927 by John W. Hammes, an architect working in Racine, Wisconsin.

Hammes’ claim is disputed, as General Electric introduced a garbage disposal unit in 1935, known as the Disposall.

Some local authorities in Britain subsidize the purchase of garbage disposal units in order to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

Usually, there is a partial rubber closure, known as a splashguard, on the top of the disposal unit to prevent food waste from flying back up out of the grinding chamber.

Especially hard objects accidentally or deliberately introduced, such as metal cutlery, can damage the waste disposal unit and become damaged themselves, although recent advances, such as swivel impellers, have been made to minimize such damage.

Best Garbage Disposals In Feb 2022

Here’s our picks for the Best Garbage Disposals in 2022.

We have made in-depth examinations and concluded that this unit has all an ideal garbage disposal has to have.

As it comes from its name, the Evolution Compact is less bulky than many other disposals on the market.

We recommend to use cool water when using the disposal and try not to overload it.

Further, you’ll be able to replace the old disposal with the new one in couple of movements.

You can prefer the disposal alone, the unit with power cord, and the complete kit consisting of the disposal with a cord and sink included.

It works best for those that need a small disposal because of small cabinet.

The 7 Best Garbage Disposals Of 2022

Garbage disposals powerfully pulverize food scraps and waste into tiny particles that are washed away with water from the sink.

We researched and narrowed down the best garbage disposals on the market, so all you have to do is click and then handle the installation later.

Size Garbage disposals are not one size fits all, so you’ll need to take a few measurements of your under-sink space to make sure the disposal you’re considering will fit.

How does a garbage disposal work? Many people think garbage disposals are equipped with blades that spin and break food down into tiny pieces, but this is actually a myth.

What can and can’t you put in a garbage disposal? Most fruit and vegetable scraps, pieces of meat, and leftovers can safely be put in a garbage disposal.

How do you unclog a garbage disposal? Clogs can happen if you place too much food into a disposal or don’t let enough water run to clear the system.

How do you clean a garbage disposal? Some food debris can accumulate in the disposal and cause the sink to have an unpleasant odor, especially if you use it frequently.

Everything You Need To Know About Garbage Disposals

All situations are different, so if you’re researching garbage disposals, pay close attention to the outlets, power supply, and other specific details of your sink and kitchen set-up.

These details will determine what kind of garbage disposal you might be able to get, and how simple installation and repairs will be.

Daily Fantasy Sports

Daily fantasy sports are an accelerated variant of traditional fantasy sports that are conducted over short-term periods, such as a week or single day of competition, as opposed to those that are played across an entire season.

Among the first sites to specialize in the format of daily fantasy was Instant Fantasy Sports, established in 2007; the service’s co-founder Chris Fargis explained that the service was inspired by the format of online poker, and that his goal was to “Take the time frame of season-long fantasy sports leagues and shrink it.” The site was later acquired by NBC Universal and re-branded as SnapDraft; NBC had also acquired the fantasy sports-focused website Rotoworld in 2006.

On July 21, 2009, the Edinburgh, Scotland-based prediction market game Hubdub launched a spin-off known as FanDuel; the service attempted to market itself as a modern alternative to the fantasy sports services provided by other media properties, such as Yahoo! Sports and CBSSports.com, with the daily fantasy format and integration with popular social networks.

The popularity of daily fantasy has also influenced fan engagement with sports; Fox Sports president Erik Shanks felt that daily fantasy sports help improve television viewership of sporting events, while FanDuel stated that players became more engaged with sports content after joining the service.

Congressman Jim Leach, who authored the UIGEA, explained that the fantasy sports carve-out was meant to relieve the burden of enforcement of the act by banks, nor cover the present-day daily fantasy industry, and that “It is sheer chutzpah for a fantasy sports company to cite the law as a legal basis for existing”.

On October 15, 2015, the Nevada Gaming Control Board published a memorandum ruling that daily fantasy sports games were a form of sports wagering, and that DFS services must cease serving customers in the state of Nevada until they obtain a sports pool license.

The SEC had discussions with its broadcast partners in an attempt to discourage the advertising of daily fantasy games during its telecasts, while both Big Ten Network and Pac-12 Network prohibited advertising for daily fantasy games involving college sports.

Just as in classical electronics, the construction of electronic capabilities on textile fibres requires the use of conducting and semiconducting materials such as a conductive textile.

There are a number of commercial textiles today that include metallic fibres mixed with textile fibres to form conducting elements that can be woven or sewn.

7.2.2.3 Textile SubstratesTextile-based electronics such as e-textile, smart textile, or wearable electronics could potentially be used in the future for high-tech sportswear, work wear, portable energy systems, health monitoring systems, and military camouflages.

E-Textiles And Their Countless Applications

While often confused with wearable technology and smart garments, don’t confuse electronic textiles with these two other groups.

Electronic textiles are a form of wearable technology, but all types of wearable tech are not always made with e-textiles, as seen in smartwatches.

The use of electronic textiles in clothing with electronic sensors is part of the innovations in this field.

Another instance of wearable technology differing from electronic textiles is when the clothing reacts chemically to a stimulus rather than electronically.

Electronic textiles only have electronics in them and do not connect to a smart device such as a phone or computer.

As a burgeoning phase of development, smart yarns remain at the forefront of the development of electronic textiles.

Today, many examples of wearable technology and electronic textiles exist.

Electronic Textiles, Wearable Technology & Smart Garments

Electronic Textiles, Wearable Technology & Smart Garments What is wearable technology and how does it differ from Electronic Textiles and Smart Garments? We’ll explain the differences and tell you a little bit about each technology.

Add a Bluetooth feature, software and voila, your electronic textile is now a smart garment.

Electronic Textiles and Smart Garments are sub-sets of wearable technology.

Smart Garments send data or feedback from the sensors to a smart device, computer or app that analyzes and displays the data in a way that is meaningful to the end user.

E-Textiles are used in smart garments and do not require the smarts to operate.

BTI has years of experience in developing sensors for smart garments that communicate with apps.

E-Textiles And Smart Clothing 2020-2030: Technologies, Markets And Players: IDTechEx

Electronic textiles involves the combination of electronics and textiles to form “Smart” textile products.

Some e-textile products such as heated blankets and heated clothing have developed throughout this time to become significant commercial markets selling millions of products each year.

The variety of products is extremely broad; from clothing to bandages, bed linen to industrial fabrics, new products are appearing throughout a variety of verticals as this technology area is increasingly explored.

Heated clothing has a mature value chain with established manufacturing practices and products being sold around the world under tens of brands.

Thanks to significant investments and partnerships, some of these barriers are being lowered, with more players able to make more advanced e-textile products as less prohibitive prices.

These developments improve the chances that emerging e-textile products have against incumbent options in each of the markets they target.

The report looks into the specific details of these markets, exploring the details of e-textile products on the market but also their non-e-textile counterparts; this comparison will be a key factor when assessing the future market potential and strategy for players in this industry.

E-Fabrics In The Making: Electronic Textiles That Can Also Be Washed

Electronic fabrics, or e-textiles, are fabrics that support components such as a battery and a light to be installed in them.

E-FABRIC EMBEDDED FORM. Electronic components are woven into the fabric of embedded e-textiles.

Embedded e-textiles are more comfortable for everyday usage since they lack bulky sensors found in laminated e-textiles.

E-FABRICS WITH LAMINATION. Laminated e-textiles are bulkier, but embedded e-textiles are more visually pleasing.

Electronic components are not woven into the fabric of laminated e-textiles.

E-TEXTILE PRODUCT EXAMPLES. Heated gloves composed of e-textiles are already widely available and reasonably priced.

E-TEXTILES APPLICATIONS. E-textiles are already in use in a wide range of industries, and their use is only growing.

Demonstrators Rally In Yellowknife To Bring Awareness To Indigenous Issues – Yukon News

YELLOWKNIFE – After having acquired the necessary funds to get them to Yellowknife, Shar Williams and The Sober Crew held a rally at the Yellowknife Artists Co-operative’s geodesic dome on Sunday, April 3.

Organizers say the goal of the rally – dubbed, The Time is Now – is to bring awareness to significant issues among Indigenous peoples while also promoting unity and understanding.

RELATED REPORTING: Donations from Yellowknifers allow Indigenous rally to proceed.

Among the issues discussed by Shar Williams, the organizer for ‘The Time Is Now’ rally, as well as The Sober Crew who came out to chat and perform for the crowd of over a dozen spectators, were ‘Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women’, systematic issues, and Indigenous rights.

Yellowknife’S Crush Volleyball Tournament First In More Than Two Years

One of those things is volleyball tournaments – remember those? – and the first one of its kind in more than two years happened this past weekend at Weledeh and St. Pat’s Gymnasiums.

The Crush Volleyball Women’s Tournament, hosted by the Crush Volleyball Club, brought together eight teams, all from Yellowknife, for a one-day event and when it was all said and done, Crush White ended up coming out on top by beating Crush Blue in the best-of-three final in straight sets, 2-0.

Crush White had one of the more exciting games in the tournament as they took on That’s What She Set, one of the better women’s teams in the city, in their final-four contest.

Crush Took the opening set, 25-23, before That’s What She Set rallied to win the second to set up the third-set tiebreak.

The final saw Crush White win a tight first set but the second set went a bit easier as Crush Blue had trouble with their passing shots, said Mathison.

Every team in the tournament was guaranteed at least four games and some ended up playing as many as six contests, such as the Crush teams.

“But we weren’t able to travel to compete the last two years and that’s been the difference. The teams in Alberta have been able to play the Premier tournaments and they’ve had a school season as well. We just haven’t had the competitive opportunities.”

Gold Terra Resource Intersects 6.41/T Gold Over 26.50 Metres Including 14.15 G/T Over 5.50 Meters On Yellorex Zone, Yellowknife, NWT As Drilling Continues On Con Mine Property

VANCOUVER, BC / ACCESSWIRE / April 6, 2022 / Gold Terra Resource Corp.;; is pleased to announce assay results for three holes to test the Yellorex zone.

Drill hole GTCM22-030 intersected 6.41/t gold over 26.50 metres including 9.05 g/t over 4.00 metres and including 10.66 g/t gold over 3.0 metres and including 14.15 g/t gold over 5.50 metres.

Holes GTCM22-027 and GTCM22-028 were drilled to test the Yellorex zone at depth of 400m below surface with GTCM22-028 intersecting 6.21g/t gold over 1.5 metres and GTCM22-027 intersecting 2.43 g/t gold over 1.0 metre.

Holes GTCM22-027 and GTCM22-028 tested the Yellorex deposit at depth and are believed to be off the main plunge of hole GTCM21-014 which intersected 5.22 g/t over 17.86 metres including 11.2 g/t gold over 4.57 metres.

The Campbell shear target and gold mineralization were intersected in all the holes of the 2021 program illustrating the continuity of the structure and identifying typical gold zoning similar to the former Con Mine gold mineralization.

Gold Terra is currently focusing its drilling on the prolific Campbell shear, where 14 Moz of gold has been produced, and most recently on the Con Mine Option claims immediately south of the past producing Con Mine.

In particular, this news release contains forward-looking information regarding the current drilling on the Campbell Shear on the Newmont Con Mine Option potentially adding high grade ounces to the Company’s current YCG mineral resource, future planned drilling on the Con Mine Option area and the Company’s objective of re-establishing Yellowknife as one of the premier gold mining districts in Canada.

Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, is an isolated mining town built on gold and now sustained by diamonds-an outpost of civilization surrounded by a vast, austere landscape of rock and tundra and water-most notably, the enormous Great Slave Lake, on whose shore the city is built.

March is when the city celebrates winter with a pair of festivals: the Long John Jamboree is a long-weekend event featuring ice fishing, helicopter rides, crafts, and kids’ activities; the monthlong Snowking Festival is held in a genuine snow castle on frozen Great Slave Lake and includes theater and musical performances, story slams, and film screenings.

How to Get Around: Downtown Yellowknife is compact and walkable, but you’ll want a rental car to explore more outlying areas.

Where to Stay: The Explorer Hotel, in downtown Yellowknife, is the go-to place to stay.

If you’re keen to visit Old Town, Brent Reaney, publisher of local magazine EDGE YK, offers another option: “Bayside Bed and Breakfast is comfortably furnished and does a great eggs Benedict,” Reaney says.

“Its rare waterfront location is as great in summer as it is in winter.” Want to get out on Great Slave? The Plummer family helped pioneer fly-in fishing lodges in the north-they first landed back in 1938 where their Great Slave Lake lodge now sits.

Where to Eat or Drink: Yellowknife has a cluster of dining and drinking options, with most located downtown.

The government of the Northwest Territories is considering retail and hotel space near the Yellowknife airport – but with five different options on the table, the plan for the airport’s future is not yet clear.

Archie said the planning process is an important part of “Modernizing airport infrastructure,” a relevant concern as the air terminal building was built in 1967.

Committee members heard five possible options for what airport development could look like – all of which include more retail and hotel space by the airport.

Every option is meant to maximize the airport’s economic impact.

Rylund Johnson, MLA for Yellowknife North, questioned the rationale behind the current airport development plan.

“Downtown is 10 minutes away. I don’t believe we need retail spaces at the airport. We have a downtown with a bunch of vacant commercial space.”

The territorial government has spent close to $400,000 on airport planning studies since 2018.

Northwest Territories

The Northwest Territories is a federal territory of Canada.

Present day Northwest Territories laid northwest of Rupert’s Land, and was known as the North-Western Territory.

After the North-West Rebellion of 1885 a North-West Territories Council was created in 1887 for regional government of Canada west of the province of Manitoba; the council was reorganized in 1888 as the Legislative Assembly of the North-West Territories.

In 1925, the boundaries of the Northwest Territories were extended all the way to the North Pole on the sector principle, vastly expanding its territory onto the northern ice cap.

On April 1, 1999, a separate Nunavut territory was formed from the eastern Northwest Territories to represent the Inuit people.

The Northwest Territories has the highest per capita GDP of all provinces and territories in Canada, totalling C$76,000 in 2009.

The longest is the Mackenzie Highway, which stretches from the Alberta Highway 35’s northern terminus in the south at the Alberta – Northwest Territories border at the 60th parallel to Wrigley, Northwest Territories in the north.

The Canadian Encyclopedia

When the NWT was acquired by the Canadian government in 1870, there was already a population of 150,000 Indigenous people living there.

The former Great Slave Lake Railway, now a branch of CN’s Peace River Division, extends 696 km north from Grimshaw, AB to Hay River and is the only railway in the NWT. The railway also led to Hay River’s development as the major river transportation centre because of its transhipment advantages, and displaced the earlier all-water Slave River route via Fort McMurray, AB. Aircraft often are the only practical method of transportation in the NWT, particularly in the Arctic.

Though no longer the leader of the government, the commissioner remains as the federal government’s representative in the NWT, appointed by the minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development and acting as chief executive officer.

Only federal government, for example, can amend the NWT Act.

The discussion around separating what is now Nunavut from the NWT began as early as the 1950s, and stemmed from a desire on the part of the people of Nunavut – who are primarily Inuit – to have a territory and a government of their own.

Finally, in 1981, the territorial government held a plebiscite and the majority voted in favour of dividing the NWT. The separation – and creation of Nunavut – wasn’t finalized until 1999.

The NWT elects one member to the Canadian Parliament, and also has one representative in the Senate.

Northwest Territories

The most populous territory in northern Canada, the Northwest Territories are bordered by Canada’s two other territories – Nunavut to the east and Yukon to the west.

Most of the Northwest Territories were known as the North-Western Territory until 1870.

The Northwest Territories were inhabited by Inuit and First Nations peoples long before the Europeans arrived in search of the elusive Northwest Passage.

The first European explorers were the Vikings, who sailed to the Eastern Arctic about 1000 AD. However, Martin Frobisher’s expeditions in the 1570s were the first recorded visits to the Northwest Territories by an explorer.

In April 1999, the Northwest Territories was divided in two, with 60 percent of the land being transferred to the new territory of Nunavut in Canada’s Eastern Arctic.

The Northwest Territories’ coat of arms was granted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1956 and represents the geography of the Northwest Territories at that time.

The flag of the Northwest Territories was adopted by the territorial council in 1969 following a nationwide design competition won by Robert Bessant of Margaret, Manitoba.

History, Facts, Map, & Flag

Throughout most of the 20th century, the territories constituted more than one-third of the area of Canada and reached almost from the eastern to the western extremities of the country, across the roof of the North American continent.

The creation in 1999 of the territory of Nunavut out of the eastern portion of the Northwest Territories reduced the area of the latter by more than half.

In the north the territories extend far above the Arctic Circle to incorporate numerous islands, the largest of which are Banks and Prince Patrick; several islands also are divided between the territories and Nunavut, notably Victoria and Melville.

The Mackenzie Mountains in the west and southwest contain the highest and most-rugged relief in the territories; elevations reach 9,098 feet at an unnamed peak in the southwest near Mount Sir James MacBrien, itself 9,062 feet high.

The most favourable conditions are found in the Mackenzie Lowlands in the west-central portion of the territories, where forests of black and white spruce mixed with deciduous species extend north to the Mackenzie delta.

Although the climate of the Mackenzie Lowlands is milder than that of the remainder of the territories, it is still cool enough to limit navigation on the Mackenzie River system to about four months a year and to cause a permanently frozen subsoil, or permafrost, except in a small area south of Great Slave Lake.

The climate in the Mackenzie Lowlands is relatively mild, with warm and dry summers during which average temperatures in July of about 60 °F are recorded at most of the settlements along the Mackenzie River.

Life In Northwest Territories

Situated in Northern Canada, the Northwest Territories are every outdoorsman’s dream.

Overall, the Northwest Territories province is the second-largest territory in Canada at 1,300,000 km2, yet it is also underpopulated with only 40,000 people.

Here’s all you need to know about life in Northwest Territories province.

Currently, the Northwest Territories economy is based on the extraction of petroleum and natural gas, as well as the mining of gold and diamonds.

The majority of the population in the Northwest Territories is aboriginal, while the rest of the population is English, French, Irish, Scottish, and German.

The sports activities in the Northwest Territories are also varied, with fun activities for all ages and interests.

Overview Porsche’s SUV lineup began with the mid-size Cayenne, but the compact Macan delivers a heartier helping of the brand’s sporting ethos while still offering more space for people and cargo than a sports car.

Handling is crisp and all Macan models provide a joyful driving demeanor that even the most hardened SUV detractors will appreciate.

Rivals such as the BMW X3 or Genesis GV70 offer more luxury equipment as standard, but the Macan stands alone as an upscale, compact SUV that satisfies its driver first and fulfills its other missions second.

What’s New for 2023?Porsche has added a Macan T trim to the lineup which features an adaptive suspension as well as the brand’s popular Sport Chrono package, which includes a set of driving modes and a launch-control feature.

The Macan T is powered by the base Macan’s 261-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine; all-wheel drive is standard just as it is on the rest of the lineup.

The Macan range includes many variants, including the Macan, Macan S, Macan S Diesel, Macan GTS and the Macan Turbo.

The Macan compact crossover SUV offers a more compact body than the Cayenne midsize crossover SUV. The Macan is also intended to be sportier than the Cayenne; for instance the Macan has a standard 7-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox, which is more responsive, while the Cayenne has an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission for smoother shifts.

The Macan GTS was announced in October 2015 to fit into the gap between the Macan S and Macan Turbo.

Using a reworked version of the Volkswagen Group’s 2.0-litre inline-four EA888 Gen 3 engine used in multiple applications such as the Audi Q5, the Macan was the first Porsche to be powered by a four-cylinder since the Porsche 968, just preceding the four-cylinder Porsche 718.

Changes to the Macan for 2016 include Porsche Communication Management system, optional full-LED headlights, redesigned steering controller, extended exterior and interior packages for Macan Turbo.

Unveiled at the 2016 New York International Auto Show, the base Macan joined the range with an inline-four turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, matte black window surrounds, brake calipers in black, unique dual exhaust pipes in stainless steel, front fascia and lava black side blades from the Macan S, seat centres in Alcantara, the newest generation of Porsche Communication Management, Piano Black interior package and a lane departure warning system.

Porsche will update the first-generation Macan in 2021, which Porsche intends to sell alongside the all-electric Macan at its debut.

Porsche Macan Review 2022

The Macan is the most popular Porsche in the UK. It’s an SUV with a desirable badge, how could it not be a success? The thing is, the Macan has always overdelivered in just about every department.

The Macan already had one facelift a few years ago when the full-width light bar and new infotainment arrived.

For 2021, it’s had another tweak, as Porsche plans to extend its life and overlap it with the next Macan, which will be wholly electric.

Porsche dropped the big-selling Macan Diesel entirely from its range in the last update, as it moved back to petrol-only power.

The entry-level Macan remains a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol version, priced a whisker under £49,000, badged simply ‘Macan’ and running a Porsche-honed, 261bhp tune of the VW Golf GTI’s engine.

There’s the Macan S, and the Macan GTS. That’s the same as the old Macan Turbo, which has been skimmed from the line-up.

As Porsche’s next Macan will be a full EV sold alongside this version, you wouldn’t bet against Stuttgart having all bases covered for some time to come.

Post Idea #29: Excimer laser

ScienceDirect Topics

Excimer lasers, along with nitrogen lasers, are the most popular gas lasers generating radiation in the ultraviolet range.

The gases of the excimer lasers undergo degradation during laser operation.

In commercially available lasers the pressure vessel is not sealed off, and is therefore connected to gas bottles that replenish the gases periodically, usually after 103-106 pulses, once the laser performance deteriorates.

The typical operating parameters are presented in Table 4.4.The laser’s optics are the second element to require maintenance, and the second factor deciding the laser’s lifetime.

In XeF lasers the optical elements used are made of MgF2, because fluoride etches both quartz and silica, with deterioration of a laser’s performance.

Once a guidewire crossed an occlusion, the overall laser success rate for treatment of chronic total occlusions was 83%. The extent of stenosis decreased from 100% to 55 *b+ 26%.6 In 74% of patients, adjunctive percutaneous balloon coronary angioplasty was used after laser treatment.

Laser in Acute Myocardial InfarctionClinically, the excimer laser.

Excimer Laser

An excimer laser, sometimes more correctly called an exciplex laser, is a form of ultraviolet laser which is commonly used in the production of microelectronic devices, semiconductor based integrated circuits or “Chips”, eye surgery, and micromachining.

Most excimer lasers are of the noble gas halide type, for which the term excimer is, strictly speaking, a misnomer.

An excimer laser typically uses a combination of a noble gas and a reactive gas.

The hydro-chloro-carbons would slowly increase over time and absorbed the laser light, causing a slow reduction in laser energy.

From an even broader scientific and technological perspective, since the invention of the laser in 1960, the development of excimer laser lithography has been highlighted as one of the major milestones in the history of the laser.

These properties make excimer lasers well suited to precision micromachining organic material, or delicate surgeries such as eye surgery LASIK. In 1980-1983, Rangaswamy Srinivasan, Samuel Blum and James J. Wynne at IBM’s T. J. Watson Research Center observed the effect of the ultraviolet excimer laser on biological materials.

Excimer lasers are also widely used in numerous fields of scientific research, both as primary sources and, particularly the XeCl laser, as pump sources for tunable dye lasers, mainly to excite laser dyes emitting in the blue-green region of the spectrum.

What Is An Excimer Laser?

Excimer is a term used today to describe a family of lasers with similar output characteristics, in that they all emit powerful pulses lasting nanoseconds or tens of nanoseconds, at wavelengths in or near the ultraviolet, and the lasing medium is a diatomic molecule, or dimer, in which the component atoms are bound in the excited state but not in the ground state.

In excimer lasers the rare gas corresponds to about 1-9% of the mixture, with a halogen donor concentration of about 0.1 to 0.2%.The rest of the gas is usually helium or neon and is used to promote energy transfer.

Due to the corrosive nature of the gases used, the structure of excimer lasers is currently engineered from stainless steel, polyvinyl and teflon components.

The laser cavity can be sealed and repeatedly refilled as the laser gas degrades during use.

As a repetitively pulsed laser, the excimer laser has an average output that is the product of the pulse energy multiplied by the number of pulses per second.

A 10W average power laser may be produced by generating 100 pulses of 100mJ each, or 10 1J pulses.

Many laser manufacturers list maximum values for average power, pulse energy, and repetition rate, but the average power is often not the product mentioned above because less energy per pulse is produced once the repetition rate exceeds a certain value.

All About Excimer Laser Treatments

The Excimer laser uses a focused beam of UVB light to treat targeted areas of the skin affected by common skin disorders including psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema, or atopic dermatitis.

The majority of patients who undergo Excimer treatments realize a remission of symptoms for months along with a significant improvement in their overall skin health.

Excimer laser treatments are quite quick and painless.

Finally, the Excimer laser is passed over the targeted area of the skin.

Excimer laser therapy uses controlled levels of UVB light which is focused on specific problem areas of the skin.

Excimer laser therapy is also free from common risks of steroids or oral medications like skin thinning, stretch mark development, or liver damage.

Some medical insurance plans do cover Excimer laser therapy treatments for medical conditions like psoriasis or vitiligo, depending on your specific plan.

Excimer Lasers, Explained By RP Photonics Encyclopedia; Rare Gas Halide Lasers, Exciplex Laser, Fluorine, Argon, Krypton Fluoride, Xenon Chloride

An excimer laser is a powerful kind of laser which is nearly always operated in the ultraviolet spectral region and generates nanosecond pulses.

As excimer lasers use molecules as the gain medium, and can therefore in principle be called molecular lasers, although the term is usually used for lasers using stable molecules like CO2, which may occasionally dissociate, but not as part of the intended laser process.

Laser material processing with laser ablation or laser cutting, exploiting the very short absorption lengths of the order of a few micrometers in many materials, so that a moderate pulse fluence of a few joules per square centimeter is sufficient for ablation.

There are also excimer lamps which basically use the same kind of gas discharge with excimer generation as excimer lasers, but they do not contain a laser resonator and thus exploit only spontaneous emission.

The RP Photonics Buyer’s Guide contains 13 suppliers for excimer lasers.

LightMachinery excimer lasers now feature exciPure™ technology, introduced in 2016; exciPure represents the greatest improvement in excimer gas lifetime and reduction in operating costs in a generation.

It next acquired Kraft, Inc. in December 1988, and then in March 1989 Philip Morris combined the two food companies under a new subsidiary called Kraft General Foods, Inc. General Foods and Kraft operated separately until early 1995, when the two units were merged as Kraft Foods.

Kraft USA and General Foods USA-along with Kraft General Foods Canada-were merged into a single organization called Kraft Foods, Inc., which also became the main Philip Morris food subsidiary, replacing Kraft General Foods, Inc. Kraft General Foods International was renamed Kraft Foods International, Inc. and became a subsidiary of Kraft Foods, Inc. Continuing the drive to improve margins, Kraft Foods in October 1995 sold its low-margin bakery division to CPC International Inc. for $865 million in cash.

In March 2001 Philip Morris created a new holding company for the combined operations known as Kraft Foods Inc. The previous Kraft Foods was renamed Kraft Foods North America, giving the new Kraft Foods two main units: Kraft Foods North America and Kraft Foods International.

The company’s “Hands” commercials, showing a pair of hands preparing recipes using Kraft products, became a symbol of the company’s advertising success.

In 1925, the company acquired the Jell-O Company, marking the start of an aggressive acquisition effort.

So the name of Birdseye’s company was changed from General Foods Company to Frosted Foods Company and the name of the parent corporation was changed to General Foods Corporation.

In 1898, Moore and Green merged their two companies, along with the United States Baking Company, to form the National Biscuit Company, a formidable collection of 114 bakeries.

Over the next several decades National Biscuit Company, often referred to by the abbreviation N.B.C., grew by acquiring companies such as the F.H. Bennett Company, maker of MILK-BONE Pet Products, and the Shredded Wheat Company, maker of TRISCUIT Wafers and SHREDDED WHEAT Cereal.

National Biscuit Company also expanded outside the United States with the acquisition of Christie Brown & Company in Canada.

In 1928, the capital stock of Christie, Brown & Company was purchased by the National Biscuit Company which is a U.S. based company.

Internet Fraud — FBI

Internet fraud is the use of Internet services or software with Internet access to defraud victims or to otherwise take advantage of them.

Internet crime schemes steal millions of dollars each year from victims and continue to plague the Internet through various methods.

The scam is carried out by compromising legitimate business e-mail accounts through social engineering or computer intrusion techniques to conduct unauthorized transfers of funds.

Frequent instances of Internet fraud include business fraud, credit card fraud, internet auction fraud, investment schemes, Nigerian letter fraud, and non-delivery of merchandise.

For information on the most common complaints and scams, see the annual reports of the Internet Crime Complaint Center, a partnership of the FBI and the National White Collar Crime Center.

Internet Fraud

Internet fraud is a type of cybercrime fraud or deception which makes use of the Internet and could involve hiding of information or providing incorrect information for the purpose of tricking victims out of money, property, and inheritance.

Internet fraud can occur even if partly based on the use of Internet services and is mostly or completely based on the use of the Internet.

Once sent, the money is gone and the scammer often disappears, though many attempts to keep the scam going by asking for a series of payments.

The scammer may tell the victim their donation is deductible and provide all necessary proof of donation, but the information provided by the scammer is fictional, and if audited, the victim faces stiff penalties as a result of the fraud.

Though these scams have some of the highest success rates especially following a major disaster and are employed by scammers all over the world, the average loss per victim is less than other fraud schemes.

While scammers are increasingly taking advantage of the power of social media to conduct criminal activity, astute risk managers and their insurance companies are also finding ways to leverage social media information as a tool to combat insurance fraud.

Flow Measurement

Flow measurement methods other than positive-displacement flowmeters rely on forces produced by the flowing stream as it overcomes a known constriction, to indirectly calculate flow.

The energy flow rate is the volumetric flow rate multiplied by the energy content per unit volume or mass flow rate multiplied by the energy content per unit mass.

References will be made to “Actual” flow rate through a meter and “Standard” or “Base” flow rate through a meter with units such as acm/h, sm3/sec, kscm/h, LFM, or MMSCFD. Gas mass flow rate can be directly measured, independent of pressure and temperature effects, with thermal mass flowmeters, Coriolis mass flowmeters, or mass flow controllers.

Such flow is called viscous drag flow or laminar flow, as opposed to the turbulent flow measured by orifice plates, Venturis and other meters mentioned in this section, and is characterized by Reynolds numbers below 2000.

Sonar flow measurement uses the same techniques and algorithms employed in underwater acoustics, but applies them to flow measurement of oil and gas wells and flow lines.

This reference flow value is compared with the simultaneous flow value given by the flow measurement to be calibrated.

The flow reference value is determined by using the tracer balance condition between the injected tracer flow and the diluting flow.

Basics Of Flow Measurement

Flow measurement Basics There are three different flow quantities to be measured :- The actual velocity of the fluid at a given point.

Examples in Separator column, liquid levels are kept constant by varying the flow rate of the process in columns are also kept constant by varying the flow rate of the process fluid passing through them.

The greater the head pressure, the faster the fluid flow rate, and consequently, the greater the volume of flow.

Density of a fluid affects flow rates in that a more dense fluid requires more head pressure to maintain a desired flow rate.

If liquid flow through a pipe of varying diameters, at any particular time the same volume flows at all points.

Back to the principle that energy is conserved within a system; it may just change from a state to another, the same principle applies to the flow within a flow closed-system.

The Law of Conservation of Energy, with respect to a flowing fluid, states that ‘the total energy of a flow of liquid does not change, as long as the system is kept closed’.

Fluid Flow Measurement

Fluid flow measurements involve determination of the flow velocity, the mass flow rate or volumetric flow rate.

The convection heat transfer characteristics for a cylinder in cross flow are well understood or alternatively a calibration can be undertaken for the specific geometry concerned to relate the current flow to the local mass flow.

16.2.4.1 Flow vs. pressure dropA common reactor fluid flow measurement.

The problem is that we have absolutely no way to “Measure” velocity, volume flow rate, volume flow rate at standard conditions, mass flow rate, or energy flow rate.

Inference: We use the few parameters that we can measure, many assumptions, and theoretical concepts to turn the scarce data into flow by using “Inference.” For example, a turbine meter has a vane pack on a wheel that rotates in response to a flowing fluid striking the vanes and transferring flow energy to rotational energy and then we count rpm.

In flow measurement, you can take the uncertainty of every instrument, assemble those values in a way that honors their importance in the flow calculation then you can determine a cumulative flow measurement uncertainty.

Subsequently, there have been many examples within the literature of their use as fibre optic flow sensors, including for water and gas flow [80-82]. Hybrid approaches involving FBGs and FPIs have been used for flow sensing [83,84].

Selection Of A Primary Measuring Device: Weir Vs. Flume The selection of a primary device for a particular flow measurement installation usually involves making a series of decisions while answering the following questions: Which kind of primary device to use: a weir or a flume? Which specific sub-type of primary device to use? 4 What is the exact size of the device to be installed at the desired location? Weirs and flumes each have decided advantages and disadvantages.

Flumes are categorized in two main classes: Long-Throated flumes and Short-Throated flumes.

Figure 3: Ramp flume Short-Throated Flumes Short-throated flumes control the discharge rate in a region that produces curvilinear flow.

The most popular flume designs in use today include the Parshall flume, the Cutthroat flume, and the Trapezoidal flume.

Calibration tests show that a Parshall flume is operating under free-flow conditions when the submergence ratio does not exceed the following submergence ratios: 50 percent for flumes 1, 2, and 3 inches wide 60 percent for flumes 6 and 9 inches wide 70 percent for flumes 1 to 8 feet wide 80 percent for flumes 8 to 50 feet wide When the submergence ratio exceeds the values listed above, the flume is operating under submerged conditions, and submerged discharge tables will have to be used to calculate the discharge.

In summary, overall accuracies obtained from the flumes can be affected by: Faulty construction or installation of the flume Improper head measuring location Incorrect zero setting of the flowmeter or level transmitter Flowmeter level-to-flow conversion inaccuracies 25 Use of the flume outside of its proper range Improper installation or maintenance of the flume Turbulence surges in the approach channel Poor exit conditions Even under the most favorable circumstances, measurement of water quantities is subject to some error.

27 Quick Selection Guide For Flumes Advantages of Flumes Self-cleaning to a certain degree Relatively low head loss Accuracy less affected by approach velocity than weirs Lower maintenance cost than weirs Disadvantages of Flumes High cost Difficult to install Type of Flume General Comments o Parshall Flume Most widely known and used flume for permanent installations.
