Executive Officer

While there is no clear line between principal executive officers and inferior executive officers, principal officers are high-level officials in the executive branch of U.S. government such as department heads of independent agencies.

In many insurance policies, executive officer means, in the case of a corporation, any chairman, chief executive officer, chief financial officer, chief operating officer, president, or general counsel.

In the case of a limited liability company, an executive officer is any member, manager, or officer.

In the units of some military forces, the executive officer is the second-in-command, reporting to the commanding officer.

Per the Marine Corps Manual, paragraph 1007.5: “The executive officer shall be an officer of the organization who is eligible to succeed to command, and normally will be the officer next in rank to the commander. As the direct representative of the commander, all orders issued by the executive officer shall have the same force and effect as though issued by the commander. The executive officer shall conform to and effectuate the policies and orders of the commander and shall be prepared to assume command at any time the need should arise.” At higher levels of command, the second-in-command is the assistant division/wing commander or, in the case of a Marine Expeditionary Force, deputy commander.

In the U.S. Coast Guard, on board small cutters and patrol boats that are commanded by either a junior officer or a senior enlisted member, executive chief petty officers or executive petty officers are usually assigned to serve as second-in-command.

The rank of an executive officer in the U.S. Air Force can vary from a junior officer supporting a mid level commander up to a senior field grade supporting a general officer.

The Field Grade Leader

Before you begin to wade into the never-ending minutiae of regulations, doctrine, emails, meeting notes and random statistics, you need your own routine to manage information and sustain your professional development.

The only items that were entered into the notebook were meeting notes and questions, no tasks or “To-do” lists.

The binder cannot be just another repository of each meeting’s power point slides.

Brigade meetings organized my notebook at the battalion level and when I was at brigade, DIV and higher meetings organized it.

Consider how many slides are in a command and staff meeting.

With your day filled with meetings, office calls and oh yeah, field exercises, how do you manage an average daily load of up to 150 emails?

Although these meetings were effective, they still did not gather the detail needed to understand long-term planning efforts and the direction of operations.

Chief Executive Officer Definition

It’s worth noting that for small organizations or those that are still in the startup or growth phases, for example, the CEO may also be serving as the CFO and the chief operating officer, and so on.

The Difference Between CEO and COB The CEO directs the operational aspects of a company.

The Difference Between CEO and CFO The CFO is the chief financial officer of a company.

The Difference Between CEO and COO Often, the chief operating officer is ranked second highest after the CEO. As the head of human resources, their responsibilities fall on recruitment, legal, payroll, and training along with administrative duties.

One study found that 45% of company performance is influenced by the CEO. But on the flip side, another shows that CEOs affect just 15% of variance in profitability.

What Does the CEO Do? CEOs are responsible for managing a company’s overall operations.

What Is A Chief Executive Officer? Definition And Role

This article explains what a chief executive officer is, their typical job responsibilities, the skills needed to succeed in this position and the effects of a CEO change.

Some CEOs may have the title of president, managing director or executive director.

Overseeing the organization’s budget The CEO works with the chief financial officer and executive management to create a budget that positions the company to achieve financial success.

Functioning as the company’s face and enhancing its image Today’s CEO has a very public-facing role.

What is a CEO change? A CEO change can mean ripples of upheaval in the organization, or it can be a sign of favorable possibilities.

Whether the CEO leaves to lead a new organization or is asked to leave by the board of directors/stakeholders, a new CEO disrupts an organization, at least temporarily.

While CEOs are often occupied with large directional issues and strategies, sometimes a new CEO will make a policy change that affects all employees.

Army Executive Officer Description

Often referred to as XO, the executive officer takes the second-in-command position in an Army unit.

Executive officers typically break into the role at the company level with 110 to 140 soldiers in the unit.

An executive officer’s main focus is handling administrative duties for the unit.

XOs also are involved in unit planning alongside the commanding officer and top enlisted man, which might include anything from battle strategy to delivery schedules, depending on the type of unit.

Particularly in larger units, executive officers function as the chief of staff, delegating responsibilities to specialized staffers, such as the officer in charge of the motor pool or in charge of training, and ensuring that these staff members fulfill their responsibilities.

According to the old saying, an Army “Travels on its stomach.” A vital part of the XO’s job is unit logistics, which means keeping the unit traveling and fed.

An executive officer’s logistics duties include overseeing supplies to ensure the unit has adequate inventory of everything it needs, from bullets to typing paper.

Bauerfeind AG is a German health care equipment company, one of the largest manufacturers of orthopaedic stockings and inserts in the world.

The company was founded in Zeulenroda in 1929 by Bruno Bauerfeind as a manufacturer of medical rubber stockings.

In 1949 his son, Rudolf Bauerfeind, left Zeulenroda because of the policy of nationalisation in East Germany and rebuilt the company in western Germany, first in Darmstadt-Eberstadt and then in Kempen.

Immediately after German reunification, in 1991, Hans B. Bauerfeind, grandson of the founder and chairman of the management board since 1976, returned Bauerfeind GmbH, as it then was, to Zeulenroda, buying a compression bandage manufacturer there and investing more than 100 million euros in a new production facility, a research centre and a new 57-metre headquarters building, the tallest new building constructed in Thuringia since reunification.

Hans Bauerfeind has built up the company to an international group.

Industrial Computed Tomography

Industrial computed tomography scanning is any computer-aided tomographic process, usually X-ray computed tomography, that uses irradiation to produce three-dimensional internal and external representations of a scanned object.

Industrial CT scanning has been used in many areas of industry for internal inspection of components.

Some of the key uses for industrial CT scanning have been flaw detection, failure analysis, metrology, assembly analysis and reverse engineering applications.

Line beam scanning is the traditional process of industrial CT scanning.

Industrial CT scanning technology was introduced in 1972 with the invention of the CT scanner for medical imaging by Godfrey Hounsfield.

Many advances in CT scanning have allowed for its use in the industrial field for metrology in addition to the visual inspection primarily used in the medical field.

Industrial CT scanning is used to detect flaws inside a part such as porosity, an inclusion, or a crack.

Non-Destructive Component Testing With Industrial CT

For sound product and process development, process monitoring and requalification:Industrial computed tomography makes it possible to look inside your component, without destroying it.

In this way we analyse the internal and external characteristics of your components non-destructively.

For this purpose, we acquire the complete component digitally and prepare a 3D volume model.

3D DIGITISATION, CRACK TESTING OR WALL THICKNESS ANALYSES. The non-destructive view of industrial computed tomography is the crucial advantage of this method.

Industrial computed tomography can also be used in areas in which optical and tactile measurement is not possible.

Its applications include the evaluation of component quality, damage analysis, product development, initial sampling, measurements during series production and tool correction.

High-resolution X-ray and CT systems in performance classes up to 450 kV and resolutions up to 70 nm are available for this purpose.

Industrial Computed Tomography

The basic hardware configuration of an industrial CT scanner consists of three key components: the X-ray source, an adequate detection system and a very precise turntable.

The turntable and the imaging system are connected to a computer in order to collect 2-dimensional X-ray images and correlate them to the position of the test component.

A standard CT scan usually covers a rotation of 360 degrees.

Depending on the selected number of increments, multiple images are acquired, with the number potentially totaling up to several thousands.

In specific applications a successful scan can even be performed with a limited rotation angle, reducing the data volume and saving time.

The recorded images are processed by a dedicated computer software, which uses mathematical reconstruction algorithms, to generate the three-dimensional distribution of the absorption coefficient inside the object.

Special visualization software enables a three-dimensional or cross-sectional viewing of the object.

Industrial Computed Tomography

Recent developments of advanced CT systems for metrology.

Technological improvements especially in the most advanced industrial CT systems are now ensuring the consistent delivery of the required precision with fast scans and high sample throughput.

A new powerful 300kV microfocus CT system for 3D metrology and defect analysis like the Phoenix V|tome|x combines a variety of proprietary CT innovations for reproducible precision measurements in a comparatively short time.

This kind of new technology allows to automatically remove scatter artifacts in just a few minutes and achieves a significantly higher image quality, especially with highly absorbent samples, which could otherwise only be achieved with significantly slower line tomography, taking about one hour or require the investment in more expensive 450kV high-energy CT equipment.

CT scanning software can include all necessary processing functions for control and calibration of the tomography system, acquisition of projection data, fast and optimized reconstruction of volumes, generation of geometrically correct surface data of the scanned object, and the execution of measurements with suitable software packages – all highly intuitive and if required fully automated at the push of a button in selected cases.

In order to ensure the specified measuring accuracy of the overall system, regular re-calibration, as with any other metrological technology, is essential.

Due to the very high degree of automation in running calibration and validation precision level, the significantly shorter scanning times and extended evaluation options have made CT technology a real alternative for precision measurements in production environments.

Industrial Computed Tomography Market Report, 2021-2028

The global industrial computed tomography market size was valued at USD 441.43 million in 2020 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 7.5% from 2021 to 2028.

The technological advancements in sensor and digital detector technology have also paved the way for the increased adoption of industrial computed tomography scanners in the market.

For the industrial sector are anticipated to bolster the market growth over the coming years.

Previously, companies preferred to buy CT scanners, including the line and cone beam scanners, due to confidentiality issues with the product design process, which is the primary reason for the high share of the equipment segment in the market.

The capital-intensive nature of the industrial CT scanners has paved the way for the high growth of the services segment in the market.

The region’s prospering automotive and electronics industries and strong presence of prominent market players, such as Baker Hughes Co., Nikon Metrology NV, and Yxlon International GmbH, are also anticipated to bolster the market growth over the coming years.

Polybutylene Terephthalate

PBT is closely related to other thermoplastic polyesters, e.g., PET. Compared to PET, PBT has slightly lower strength and rigidity, slightly better impact resistance, and a slightly lower glass transition temperature.

The table shows that PBT has lower density, tensile strength, tensile modulus than PET and LCP. It shows that PBT has higher thermal property of HDT, CLTE, and impact strength than PET. The advantages of PBT include its resistance to solvents and low shrinkage rate when forming.

The main drawback to PBT is not only its higher melting point but also the fact that there are no obvious advantages over PLA or PCL. Therefore, PBT has seen much less studies in the 3D printing domain compared to the two other polyesters.

PBT scaffolds can match the mechanical properties of the tissue that are implanted in and especially the porosity; this indicates a potential of creating biomimetic scaffold using PBT soon.

Molded items are hard, bright colored, and retain their impact strength at temperatures as low as −40F. PBT can crystallize much faster than PET. The properties of the highly crystalline PBT are fairly similar to unoriented crystalline PET; PBT is not as conveniently oriented as PET.PBTs offer high strength and rigidity, excellent electrical properties and chemical resistance, rapid molding cycles, and excellent reproducible mold shrinkage.

The different grades of PBT are rated UL 94 HB. Grades are available to meet UL 94 V-0 requirements, and many of them also meet the more restrictive flammability requirements of UL 94 5V. Strength, stiffness, and better thermal properties are gained by reinforcing PBT with glass fibers.

PBT is not recommended for extended use in water or aqueous solutions above 52C.112 PBT plastics are also intrinsically resistant to detergents, weak acids and bases, aliphatic hydrocarbons, fluorinated hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, ethylene glycol, carbon tetrachloride, oils, and fats at room temperature.

Polybutylene Terephthalate Material Guide & Properties Info

PBT is produced by polycondensation of terephthalic acid or dimethyl terephthalate with 1,4-butanediol using special catalysts.

Flame-retardant Polybutylene Terephthalate and lubricated PBT versions are also available in both unreinforced and reinforced grades.

Properties of PBT. The polymer displays excellent mechanical and electrical properties.

Polycarbonate/Polybutylene Terephthalate Blend Polycarbonate and PBT have comparable tensile strength and flexural strength.

PBT is often preferred over Polyethylene Terephthalate.

Methods of Processing PBT. PBT grades are processed mainly by injection molding at temperatures ranging from 230° to 270° C but they can also be processed by extrusion, blow molding, etc.

Polybutylene Terephthalate

Polybutylene terephthalate is a thermoplastic engineering polymer that is used as an insulator in the electrical and electronics industries.

PBT is resistant to solvents, shrinks very little during forming, is mechanically strong, heat-resistant up to 150 °C and can be treated with flame retardants to make it noncombustible.

PBT is closely related to other thermoplastic polyesters.

PBT has slightly lower strength and rigidity, slightly better impact resistance, and a slightly lower glass transition temperature.

PBT and PET are sensitive to hot water above 60 °C. PBT and PET need UV protection if used outdoors, and most grades of these polyesters are flammable, although additives can be used to improve both UV and flammability properties.

Polybutylene terephthalate is used for housings in electrical engineering, but also in automotive construction as plug connectors and in households for example in showerheads or irons.

Further, recent studies have shown that PBT has superior UV properties to PET based fabrics such as T400. PBT, especially glass fibre grades can be effectively fire retarded with halogen free products.

PBT

Polybutylene terephthalate is the second most important commercial polyester.

It is a semi-aromatic thermoplastic that can be easily molded and thermoformed.

Depending on the cooling rate and molding process, it is either amorphous or semi-crystalline.

1 PBT has many attractive properties like high strength and toughness, good abrasion and heat resistance, low creep at elevated temperatures, good chemical resistance, and excellent dimensional stability, particularly when glass-fiber reinforced.

PBT competes with polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in many engineering plastics applications.

It has somewhat lower strength and rigidity but is more flexible and tougher (higher impact strength).

It also has a slightly lower melting point and crystallizes much faster than PET. Its maximum use temperature is typically between 115 – 135°C (240 – 275°F) which is slightly lower than that of PET. Like PET, PBT finds many uses as an engineering thermoplastic, particularly in electrical and automotive applications, including plug connectors, relays, keyboards, switches, distribution boxes, and fiber optic cable jackets.

Polybutylene terephthalate, a strong and highly crystalline synthetic resin, produced by the polymerization of butanediol and terephthalic acid.

PBT is similar in structure to polyethylene terephthalate-the difference being in the number of methylene groups present in the repeating units of the polymer molecules.

The mechanical properties of the two materials are also similar.

PBT has a lower melting point than PET, so it can be processed at lower temperatures.

This property, combined with its excellent flow when molten and its rapid crystallization upon cooling, makes PBT highly suitable for injection-molding into solid parts.

PBT lends rigidity and thermoplastic properties to a synthetic rubber known as copolyester elastomer.

Nonprofit Organization

A nonprofit organization is a business that has been granted tax-exempt status by the Internal Revenue Service because it furthers a social cause and provides a public benefit.

Donations made to a nonprofit organization are typically tax-deductible to individuals and businesses that make them, and the nonprofit itself pays no tax on the received donations or on any other money earned through fundraising activities.

Nonprofit organizations are sometimes called NPOs or 501(c)(3) organizations based on the section of the tax code that permits them to operate.

A nonprofit designation and tax-exempt status are given only to organizations that further religious, scientific, charitable, educational, literary, public safety or cruelty-prevention causes or purposes.

Examples of nonprofit organizations include hospitals, universities, national charities, churches, and foundations.

Before it can receive a tax exemption, an organization needs to request 501(c)(3) status from the IRS. Once registered and running, the organization has to maintain compliance with the appropriate state agency that regulates charitable organizations.

The terms nonprofit organization and not-for-profit organizationare sometimes used interchangeably.

Nonprofit Organization

A nonprofit organization, also known as a non-business entity, not-for-profit organization, or nonprofit institution, is a legal entity organized and operated for a collective, public or social benefit, in contrast with an entity that operates as a business aiming to generate a profit for its owners.

For a nonprofit that seeks to finance its operations through donations, public confidence is a factor in the amount of money that a nonprofit organization is able to raise.

According to the National Center for Charitable Statistics, there are more than 1.5 million nonprofit organizations registered in the United States, including public charities, private foundations, and other nonprofit organizations.

Nonprofit organizations return any extra income to the organization.

Member-serving nonprofit organizations create a benefit for the members of their organization and can include but are not limited to credit unions, sports clubs, and advocacy groups.

The two major types of nonprofit organization are membership and board-only.

A board-only organization’s bylaws may even state that the organization does not have any membership, although the organization’s literature may refer to its donors or service recipients as ‘members’; examples of such organizations are FairVote and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

Overview And Requirements

The revenues earned by a non-profit organization are mainly from donations from individuals and corporate organizations, as well as from fundraising activities.

The code determines an organization’s eligibility for the non-profit organization status.

One of the requirements for a non-profit organization is that it must serve the public.

Non-profit organizations qualify for tax-exempt status from the IRS, and this helps keep more revenues within the organization to help in undertaking their ultimate objectives.

For an organization to be tax-exempt, it needs to request the 501(c) status from the IRS, and meet the requirements set out in the Internal Revenue Code.

Over-reliance on donations and sponsorships may create cash flow problems for the organizations when the donors fail to make contributions or the amounts donated fall below the funding requirements of the organization.

Non-profit organizations are large, more organized organizations that focus on a specific social cause, such as religion, education, environmental, research, or a science setting.

What Is A “Nonprofit”?

America’s 1.3 million charitable nonprofits feed, heal, shelter, educate, inspire, enlighten, and nurture people of every age, gender, race, and socioeconomic status, from coast to coast, border to border, and beyond.

The term “Nonprofit” means different things to many different people.

People often use the words “Nonprofit” and “Tax exempt” interchangeably.

Congress has created almost three dozen types of tax-exempt organizations in different sections of the tax code.

The one common condition is not paying out profits; hence the term, “Nonprofit.” Section 501(c)(3) of the tax code refers to “Public charities” and “Private foundations.” The tax code considers “Churches and religious organizations” to be “Public charities.”

The figures below illustrate how the numbers of nonprofits that operate in different states covers quite a range.

What Is Salsa Labs?

Salsa Labs is one such service that also doubles as a software.

In 2007, these two organizations merged, creating Salsa Labs.

Donors receive information from multiple sources and expect personal interactions with nonprofits rather than giving in to the one-size-fits-all outreach most nonprofits had in the past.

Salsa set out to rectify this problem, aiming to bring modern, affordable tools to all nonprofits who needed them.

In 2015, Salsa then merged with the donor management platform, DonorPro, to form a powerful donor management platform, and three years later, it was acquired by Accel-KKR. With such a long history of acquisitions and mergers, Salsa is now one of the leading donor management tools for nonprofits, not just in the United States, but also around the world.

Salsa has a number of different features that make it a suitable platform for nonprofit use.

Salsa has the technology to keep your nonprofit running – and also the team to fuel your growth.

Why Rated 5.4/10?

Most companies opt for data migration services from a vendor, which raises the cost of product ownership.

If you choose to transfer data on your own, you can avoid paying the cost of data migration.

Data migration cost depends on the amount of data to be transferred, your current software, availability of migration tools, complexity of data, and gaps between the existing system and the new system.

If your data is stored in Excel spreadsheets, then it may incur you a lot of time and money to migrate data from Excel.

By involving a business services provider in data migration, you are asking them to offer additional services, for which you may have to pay extra.

As a rule of thumb the cost of data migration depends on how many records you want to migrate.

Anyone have any insight on how the salary ranges work at Lockheed Martin? On new job postings I often see rather large compensation ranges and I’m trying to figure a good rule of thumb as far as how that translates to actual compensation.

Say a job posting has a salary range is from 74k – 125k. What would you expect to be initially offered, and how flexible are negotiations within that scale? Thank in advance!

ScienceDirect Topics

The polysaccharide can be the O-specific polysaccharide, the enterobacterial common antigen, or a capsular polysaccharide as, for example, colanic acid.

Additional monomer units are found in polysaccharides other than the common food polysaccharides.

The molecular weight range may be narrow or broad.Bacterial polysaccharides, such as xanthan and gellan, and some plant polysaccharides, such as cellulose, are chemically homogeneous with regard to monosaccharide units and their sequence, but bacterial polysaccharides can vary with respect to attached noncarbohydrate substituent groups.

Microbial polysaccharides are multifunctional and can be divided into intracellular polysaccharides, structural polysaccharides, and extracellular polysaccharides or exopolysaccharides.

Soluble polysaccharides are being separated by water molecule as water molecules create an outer layer to prevent the agglomeration of polysaccharides.

For less soluble polysaccharide the interaction between water molecule and polysaccharides are not energetically stable and gelation or precipitation occurs.

Polysaccharides generally extracted from plants, grains, fruits, vegetables, and edible mushrooms have low toxicity and numerous biological activities [1-3]. The antidiabetic and antiobesity properties of polysaccharides have emerged as an important research topic in functional food research.

Definition, Examples, Function And Structure

A polysaccharide is a large molecule made of many smaller monosaccharides.

Depending on which monosaccharides are connected, and which carbons in the monosaccharides connects, polysaccharides take on a variety of forms.

A molecule with a straight chain of monosaccharides is called a linear polysaccharide, while a chain that has arms and turns is known as a branched polysaccharide.

While the enzymes that produce energy only work on the monosaccharides stored in a polysaccharide, polysaccharides typically fold together and can contain many monosaccharides in a dense area.

The structure of the molecules being combined determines the structures and properties of the resulting polysaccharide.

A polysaccharide used for energy storage will give easy access to the monosaccharides, while maintaining a compact structure.

The only difference between the structural polysaccharides and storage polysaccharides are the monosaccharides used.

Types, Characteristics, Functions And Important FAQs

Polysaccharide examples: Starch, Cellulose or Glycogen are polysaccharides Carbohydrates.

Polysaccharides are an important class of biological polymers and generally contain more than 10 monosaccharide units oligosaccharides are polysaccharides with three to 10 monosaccharide units.

Biological polysaccharides help in performing various functions in living organisms, either structural functions or energy storage functions.

Polysaccharide Meaning: Poly means ‘many’ and saccharide means ‘sugar’; so a polysaccharide contains many sugar molecules.

Some complex polysaccharides are not very digestible that are known as dietary fibre and these provide important elements in the diet for humans.

About Polysaccharides Provided by Vedantu This article of Vedantu deals with polysaccharides, the other two carbohydrates called monosaccharides and disaccharides have a separate article that includes important study material and therefore these concepts can be studied in-depth with the help of those notes provided by Vedantu.

The study notes provided by Vedantu on polysaccharides are an extremely important resource for students as they act as a reference guide.

Polysaccharides-Characterstics. Types, And Functions

Polysaccharides- Starch, glycogen, and cellulose are examples of polysaccharides.

These complex bio-macromolecules functions as an important source of energy in animal cell and form a structural component of a plant cell.

Polysaccharides can be a straight chain of monosaccharides known as linear polysaccharides, or it can be branched known as a branched polysaccharide.

Gamma globulin: N-acetyl-hexosamine, D-mannose, D-galactose are the component sugars of this polysaccharide.

The polysaccharides serve as a structural organization in animals and plants.

Many polysaccharides become covalently bonded with lipids and proteins to form glycolipids and glycoproteins.

The cell wall of plants is made up of polysaccharide cellulose, which provides support to the cell wall of the plant.

Polysaccharide

Examples include storage polysaccharides such as starch, glycogen and galactogen and structural polysaccharides such as cellulose and chitin.

When all the monosaccharides in a polysaccharide are the same type, the polysaccharide is called a homopolysaccharide or homoglycan, but when more than one type of monosaccharide is present they are called heteropolysaccharides or heteroglycans.

Starch is used as a storage polysaccharide in plants, being found in the form of both amylose and the branched amylopectin.

Galactogen is a polysaccharide of galactose that functions as energy storage in pulmonate snails and some Caenogastropoda.

Inulin is a naturally occurring polysaccharide complex carbohydrate composed of fructose, a plant-derived food that cannot be completely broken down by human digestive enzymes.

Pathogenic bacteria commonly produce a thick, mucous-like, layer of polysaccharide.

Aqueous solutions of the polysaccharide alone have a curious behavior when stirred: after stirring ceases, the solution initially continues to swirl due to momentum, then slows to a standstill due to viscosity and reverses direction briefly before stopping.

Chemical Compound

Homopolysaccharides composed of glucose include glycogen and starch-the storage carbohydrates of animals and plants, respectively-as well as cellulose, the important structural component of most plants.

Pectins, found in fruits and berries and used commercially as gelling agents, consist of a derivative of galacturonic acid.

The repeating unit of chitin, a component of the outer skeleton of arthropods is N-acetyl-d.-glucosamine, a compound derived from glucose; shells of arthropods such as crabs and lobsters contain about 20 percent chitin.

The most abundant mucopolysaccharide, hyaluronic acid from connective tissue, is also the major component of joint fluid and occurs in the soft connective tissue of the umbilical cord of mammals.

Glucuronic acid linked to N-acetyl-d.-galactosamine is the repeating unit of chondroitin sulfate, a heteropolysaccharide found in cartilage.

Heparin, a heteropolysaccharide related to the acid mucopolysaccharides, has anticoagulant properties and is present in connective and other tissues.

Complex heteropolysaccharides occur in plant gums such as gum arabic from Acacia and gum tragacanth from Astragalus.

Role Of Polysaccharides In Food, Digestion, And Health

The chemical properties of starch and the cooling conditions play a major role in predisposing starch to thicken or form a gel.

Food particle size, for example, is an important predictor of starch bioaccessibility, as the fractured particle surface is exposed to enzymes, whereas diffusion is required for enzymes to access starch in the underlying cell layers.

Starch digestion commences in the oral phase, as food is exposed to saliva consisting of electrolytes, lubricants, antimicrobial compounds and various enzymes, such as amylase, lipase, ribonucleases, and proteases.

Mechanical mastication facilitates starch digestion by mixing food with saliva and may also reduce the particle size, effectively increasing the availability of carbohydrate as the food matrix becomes disrupted.

Starch or starch hydrolysis products which escape digestion in the small intestine are termed “RS.” RS is classified into five types, with starch entrapped in the food matrix and therefore physically inaccessible being termed RS1, native starch granules RS2, retrograded starch formed after starch gelatinization RS3, chemically modified starch RS4 and starch capable of forming complexes between amylose and long branch chains of amylopectin with lipids RS5. The RS content of food is highly variable and depends on processing conditions.

These include the digestibility of the starch; the natural structure of the food matrix; viscosity of the digesta; interactions of the starch with protein in the food; the amount and types of fat; sugars and NSPs; and the presence of other constituents, such as α-amylase inhibitors, phytate, and polyphenols which may impair starch digestibility.

Colonic healthThe extent of digestion during transit through the upper GI tract is important as it determines the proportion of starch that is available to the colon for fermentation, and may also play a role in appetite control through the colonic brake feedback mechanism.

2023 Kia Telluride Teases Fresh Styling And New Off-Road Trim

Just like its Hyundai Palisade platform-mate, the 2023 Kia Telluride is getting a mid-cycle refresh for the new model year.

Set to debut at next week’s New York International Auto Show, the facelifted Telluride doesn’t look as extensively reworked as the sharpened Palisade, as far as I can tell from the two dark teaser sketches Kia released.

There appears to be a new lower front bumper design and the crossover’s orange, rectangular LED headlight signatures appear to have been replaced with dual-vertical lines, but everything else I can see looks the same.

On top of the aesthetic changes, Kia says the Telluride will also be getting a new, presumably more off-roadable X-Pro trim.

No Telluride X-Pro details have been released but for reference, the company’s Sportage X-Pro adds B.F. Goodrich all-terrain tires with 17-inch matte black wheels, LED fog lights, a heated windshield and washer nozzle, and multi-terrain drive modes.

Kia will be taking the wraps off of the 2023 Telluride on Wednesday, April 13 at 10:10 a.m. ET-precisely 25 minutes after Hyundai reveals the new Palisade-at the NY Auto Show.

Got a tip or question for the author about the Telluride? You can reach them here: chris.

2023 Kia Telluride Teased With New Tech And X-Pro Off-Road Trim

The Kia Telluride is getting a refresh for 2023, even though it doesn’t need it.

The 2020 World Car of the Year is Kia’s best-selling SUV and is one of the fastest-selling vehicles in the U.S. in February, according to data from iseecars.com.

Time marches on and its due for its regularly scheduled mid-cycle redesign for 2023, which appears to be more substantial than most.

Kia has released two teaser images of the three-row SUV ahead of its debut at the upcoming New York International Auto Show.

A shadowy image of its exterior suggest it will receive mild updates that include new lighting, but a rendering of the interior reveals a full overhaul of the dashboard.

In place of the traditional layout in the current model, which has an instrument cluster with analogue gauges and a separate touchscreen infotainment system in the center of the dashboard, is what appears to be a single housing one or more widescreen displays similar to what’s featured in several of Kia’s other latest models.

The Telluride will be revealed in full at the New York International Auto Show on April 13 along with the new Kia Niro compact SUV, which will be available as a hybrid, plug-in hybrid and EV..

2023 Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride

Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride share the same underpinnings and engine options but flaunt completely different top hats.

Hyundai Motor Company and its sister brand Kia have teased facelifted models of their respective three-row premium SUVs- Palisade and Telluride.

Palisade and Telluride facelifts are expected to go on sale in the USA later this year.

Palisade borrows its design cues from Tucson while Telluride draws styling inspirations from Sportage.

Hyundai is still tight-lipped about interiors of the facelifted Palisade but the cabin is expected to witness a few tweaks.

Both teasers show the facelifted SUVs in top-spec trims, Palisade in its Calligraphy model while Telluride in a new X-Pro variant which will be a more off-road focussed model.

Palisade and Telluride are powered by a standard 3.8-liter naturally aspirated V-6 petrol engine which is exclusively mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Kia Telluride Facelift SUV Teased, Will Get Side-By-Side Screens

Kia will unveil its three-row SUV telluride at the New York International Auto Show.Kia Telluride SUV will be offered in the X-Pro variant.

Kia is all set to bring in its new three-row SUV Telluride on April 13 at the New York International Auto Show.

On the design front, the new Kia Telluride SUV will get a pair of redesigned headlights along with LED daytime running lights that consist of two vertical lines that run parallel.

The Kia Telluride will offer significant changes in the interior.

Kia is yet to share any technical specifications of the upcoming SUV. Kia will also bring its flagship electric SUV EV9 next year.

Though the battery capacity of the upcoming EV is not known, Kia has claimed that the EV9 electric SUV will offer a user a range of 540 km per charge.

Kia has shared its electrification targets as the company aims to introduce 14 battery-electric models by 2027 and to accommodate its expanding lineup of electric vehicles, Kia will also update its production sites.

2023 Kia Telluride: What We Know So Far

The Telluride offers a generous set of standard features throughout its range, and its top trim manages to deliver an elevated experience that’s comparable to SUVs that cost twice as much.

A smooth-running V-6 engine, quiet cabin, and confident handling give the Telluride a refined feel on the road, too.

We will have more details about the 2023 Telluride once it debuts at the New York auto show on April 13.What’s New for 2023?A styling refresh for 2023 that updates the Telluride to make it even more attractive, but it appears as though there are larger changes in store for the SUV’s interior.

Pricing and Which One to Buy If the restyled Telluride continues to be offered with the same value-oriented pricing as the 2022 model, we can’t help but recommend going with the SX trim.

When Kia releases more information about the 2023 Telluride’s features and options, we’ll update this story with details.

Engine, Transmission, and PerformanceBarring any surprise announcements, we’re expecting the Telluride to continue to offer the 2022 model’s 3.6-liter V-6 and eight-speed automatic transmission, a powertrain we’ve praised for its smooth operation and adequate power.

There’s a chance Kia could drop in a turbocharged four-cylinder as a base engine or perhaps add a hybrid powertrain option such as the one in the slightly smaller Sorento SUV. More on the Telluride SUV Infotainment and ConnectivityFrom the teaser image, we gather that the current 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system is being replaced by a much larger display that will stretch across the dashboard and join up with a digital gauge display behind the steering wheel.

Britain’s American colonies broke with the mother country in 1776 and were recognized as the new nation of the United States of America following the Treaty of Paris in 1783.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, 37 new states were added to the original 13 as the nation expanded across the North American continent and acquired a number of overseas possessions.

The two most traumatic experiences in the nation’s history were the Civil War, in which a northern Union of states defeated a secessionist Confederacy of 11 southern slave states, and the Great Depression of the 1930s, an economic downturn during which about a quarter of the labor force lost its jobs.

Buoyed by victories in World Wars I and II and the end of the Cold War in 1991, the US remains the world’s most powerful nation state.

Since the end of World War II, the economy has achieved relatively steady growth, low unemployment and inflation, and rapid advances in technology.

New York Auto Show Canceled Amid Delta Spike – NBC New York

For the second straight year, organizers are pumping the brakes on the New York International Auto Show.

In an emailed statement Wednesday afternoon, auto show president Michael Schienberg announced that the convention – set to begin on Aug. 20 – was canceled, citing spiking COVID-19 caseloads from the hyper-contagious delta variant and state and local safety measures for the cancellation.

“As custodians of the 121-year-old New York Auto Show, we are committed to providing a safe environment for everyone including attendees, exhibitors, and the thousands of men and women who put the Show together,” Schienberg said.

The auto show was founded in 1900 and is one of the auto industry’s most popular conventions with more than 1 million attendees each year.

Last year’s installment was initially postponed before being canceled, but before that, the show hadn’t been postponed or canceled since World War II. This year’s show was one of several large-scale city traditions expected to return this summer and fall – and was scheduled to begin just one day before the highly anticipated “We Love NYC” concert in Central Park.

Next year’s auto show is expected to return to its normal springtime slot in April.

“The Covid pandemic has challenged our City, the country and the entire world, but just like the automobile industry, we know that the New York Auto Show will rebound and be bigger and better than before,” said Schienberg.

Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System

The Modular Advanced Armed Robotic System is a robot that is being developed by Qinetiq.

MAARS is armed with an M240B machine gun and four M203 grenade launcher tubes on a 360 degree rotating turret.

In another scenario, the MAARS provided overwatch as a different robot attached an explosive charge to a door for door breaching.

One obstacle to the deployment of MAARS, and armed unmanned ground vehicles in general, is the reluctance of military leaders to utilize remote-controlled weapon systems at ground level.

The Defense Department is in agreement that any lethal force applied by an unmanned system will be decided by an individual, not by the system autonomously.

From 7-10 October 2013, the MAARS took part in testing, along with other systems, at Fort Benning as part of the U.S. Army’s Armed Unmanned Ground Vehicle program.

The Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory hopes to have an armed UGV like MAARS to provide more firepower on foot patrols, since medium machine guns are usually not taken with them; it can also “Stand post” for 12 hours or be left in sleep mode for more than a week.

Smiths Group

Smiths Group has its origins in a jewellery shop, S Smith & Sons, which was founded by the watchmaker and businessman Samuel Smith.

Throughout much of the twentieth century, Smiths Group was the principal supplier of instruments to the British motorcar and motorcycle industries, organising itself as Smiths Industries Ltd in 1960.

During the 1980s and 1990s, the company restructured itself, disposing of its automotive division to focus on three divisions: Smiths Industrial, Smiths Medical Systems, and Smiths Aerospace and Defence.

In the 1930s, Smiths agreed a trading deal with British rival manufacturer Lucas whereby the two would not compete in certain areas, while Lucas took on part of Smiths non-instrumentation assets.

The 1950s was a period of significant restructuring for Smiths Group; in 1958, Smiths Aviation and Smiths Marine were organised as separate divisions.

In July 2002, Smiths Group established a fourth division, Smiths Detection, which specialised in producing sensors and other equipment for the detection of weapons, explosives, contraband, and various hazardous substances.

On 21 April 2016, it was announced that Smiths Group was in the process of acquiring Morpho Detection LLC, a US-based subsidiary of Safran; it was integrated into the Smiths Detection division.

How Does Gross Margin And Net Margin Differ?

Gross margin and net margin are profitability ratios used to assess the financial well being of a company.

Both gross profit margin and net margin or net profit margin are expressed in percentage terms and measure profitability as compared to revenue for a period.

Gross profit margin is the gross profit divided by total revenue, multiplied by 100, to generate a percentage of income retained as profit after accounting for the cost of goods.

Net profit margin or net margin is the percentage of net income generated from a company’s revenue.

Net income is often called the bottom line for a company or the net profit.

A net profit margin of 23% means that for every dollar generated by Apple in sales, the company kept $0.23 as profit.

Gross profit margin and net profit margin are used to determine how well a company’s management is generating profits.

WD-40 2Q Profit, Sales Grow But Gross Margin Shrinks

WD-40 Co. on Thursday logged higher net income and revenue in the second quarter but said gross margins deteriorated due to a challenging inflationary environment.

The San Diego, Calif.-based company posted net income of $19.5 million, or a gain of $1.41 per share, for the quarter ended Feb. 28, compared to net income of $17.2 million, or a gain of $1.24 per share, a year earlier.

Gross Margin: Definition And How To Calculate

Gross margin vs. gross profit: What is the difference?

Gross margin – also called gross profit margin or gross margin ratio – is a company’s sales minus its cost of goods sol.

We can use the gross profit of $50 million to determine the company’s gross margin.

The gross margin for this example company is 33.3%. Gross margin vs. gross profit: What is the difference?

Gross profit is a measure of absolute value, while gross margin is a ratio.

Gross profit is simply the difference between a company’s sales and its direct selling costs, and a company’s gross margin is its gross profit expressed as a percentage of sales.

Gross margin puts gross profit into context by taking the company’s sales volume into account.

What Is Gross Margin?

Gross margin is the amount remaining after a retailer or manufacturer subtracts its cost of goods sold from its net sales.

The gross margin may be calculated for an individual product, a product line, or for the entire company.

A manufacturer sells a product for $40 and its cost of goods sold is $28. Therefore, the product’s gross margin is $12, or 30% of the selling price.

Gross margin is the amount or percent before subtracting the selling, general and administrative, and interest expenses.

A chain of grocery stores many have a gross margin of 20%, but its profit margin may be 1%. What the Gross Margin Tells You.

Analysts track a company’s gross margin percentage to determine whether the company is able to increase selling prices when costs are increasing or when competitors are reducing prices or expanding their sales efforts.

The gross margin of individual products could indicate to management that some products should be promoted more aggressively and some products should be phased out.

How To Calculate Gross Margin

What is gross margin? Gross margin, also called gross profit margin, is the amount of revenue left over after paying expenses related to your products or services.

Gross margin% =/Total revenue x 100.Why is gross margin important to a company? Gross margin is important because it is one of many vital metrics to build a strategic plan around.

How to calculate gross margin To calculate gross margin, first identify each variable of the formula and then fill in the values.

Combine the variables to determine the gross margin After determining the total revenue and cost of goods sold, combine these variables in the equation to calculate gross margin.

What determines a good gross margin? Typically, 10%-20% is a good average to high gross margin to target, but the ideal gross margin a business should target varies by industry.

Gross margin is a metric that helps a company identify how much they can reinvest and how far they are from their break-even point.

The key difference between gross margin and net margin is that net margin equals revenue after all expenses have been deducted.

What Is The Gross Margin Formula: How To Calculate?

The gross margin is calculated based on the gross margin formula.

Gross profit, gross profit margin, and gross margin.

The gross profit margin on the other hand is also known as the gross margin ratio or the gross profit percentage.

From this, we can deduce that gross profit is essentially when you calculate the gross margin in dollars and gross profit margin is when you calculate the percentage or ratio.

When you want gross margin in dollars, you need to use the following simple gross margin formula.

The gross profit margin in dollars was calculated with the formula total revenue minus cost of goods sold which means the gross profit margin is $3,500,000 – $1,200,000 = $2,300,000.

Industry analysts found that some clothing retailers enjoyed profit margins of more than 12% in 2018 while others had a gross profit margin of around 4%. A good gross profit margin is also dependent on how old your business is.

Learn How To Calculate Gross Margin Ratio

The Gross Margin Ratio, also known as the gross profit margin ratio, is a Profitability Ratios.

The ratio indicates the percentage of each dollar of revenue that the company retains as gross profit.

The ratio measures how profitably a company can sell its inventory.

A low gross margin ratio does not necessarily indicate a poorly performing company.

A legal service company reports a high gross margin ratio because it operates in a service industry with low production costs.

Consider the gross margin ratio for McDonald’s at the end of 2016 was 41.4%. The ratio for the Bank of America Corporation at the end of 2016 was 97.8%. Comparing these two ratios will not provide any meaningful insight into how profitable McDonalds or the Bank of America Corporation is.

Net Profit Margin is a financial ratio used to calculate the percentage of profit a company produces from its total revenue.

Peracetic Acid

Peracetic acid, is an organic compound with the formula CH3CO3H. This organic peroxide is a colorless liquid with a characteristic acrid odor reminiscent of acetic acid.

Peracetic acid is a weaker acid than the parent acetic acid, with a pKa of 8.2.

The peracetic acid is a more effective bleaching agent than hydrogen peroxide itself.

Peracetic acid is always sold in solution as a mixture with acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide to maintain its stability.

Peracetic acid can be used as a cooling tower water disinfectant, where it prevents biofilm formation and effectively controls Legionella bacteria.

Decontamination kits for cleaning fentanyl analogues from surfaces often contain solid peracetyl borate, which mixes with water to produce peracetic acid.

Peracetic Acid Uses And Hazards

Peracetic acid has also previously been used during the manufacture of chemical intermediates for pharmaceuticals.

Produced by reacting acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide with an acid catalyst, peracetic acid is always sold in stabilized solutions containing acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and water.

Many users know peracetic acid to be versatile and effective, and professionals with environmental responsibilities consider it to be environmentally friendly due to its decomposition products, which include acetic acid, oxygen, and water.

MANY ADVANTAGES.”I’ve never seen a chemical whose applications cross over from food and beverage to wastewater,” says Debbie Dietrich, CIH, senior vice president of sales and marketing and corporate industrial hygienist at SKC Inc. “From an industrial standpoint, there are so many advantages to peracetic acid: it’s easy to apply and it doesn’t leave any toxic residues.” Dietrich, who first learned about peracetic acid from the AIHA Healthcare Working Group, was surprised to find that the use of the compound extends far beyond the healthcare industry, where it’s primarily used as a chemical disinfectant.

While peracetic acid is highly irritating to those who work with it-manufacturing workers are most at risk, along with chemists studying the compound-Knezevich maintains that the primary concern associated with peracetic acid is that it’s a strong oxidizer.

“Our major concerns were actually the fire and explosion hazards and reactivity issues,” she says, explaining that peracetic acid reacts violently with soft metals such as brass, copper, iron, and zinc.

Workplaces using peracetic acid at lower concentrations will preferably have some type of chemical metering pump system in place to minimize exposures to workers.

Peracetic Acid As A Disinfectant

Peracetic acid is a mixture of acetic acid and hydrogen peroxide in a watery solution.

Peracetic acid is usually produced in concentrations of 5-15%.When peracetic acid dissolves in water, it disintegrates to hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid, which will fall apart to water, oxygen and carbon dioxide.

Peracetic acid degradation products are non-toxic and can easily dissolve in water.

Peracetic acid is used mainly in the food industry, where it is applied as a cleanser and as a disinfectant.

Peracetic acid is suitable for cooling tower water disinfection; it affectively prevents bio film formation and controls Legionella bacteria.

Peracetic acid as a disinfectant oxidizes the outer cell membranes of microorganisms.

Peracetic acid activity is hardly influenced by organic compounds that are present in the water.

Post Idea #19: Three-phase electric power

Related Articles – Summarized

Three-Phase Electric Power

Three phase power evolved out of electric motor development.

In a symmetric three-phase power supply system, three conductors each carry an alternating current of the same frequency and voltage amplitude relative to a common reference, but with a phase difference of one third of a cycle between each.

This phase delay gives constant power transfer to a balanced linear load. It also makes it possible to produce a rotating magnetic field in an electric motor and generate other phase arrangements using transformers.

Constant power transfer and cancelling phase currents are possible with any number of phases, maintaining the capacity-to-conductor material ratio that is twice that of single-phase power.

As compared to a single-phase AC power supply that uses two conductors, a three-phase supply with no neutral and the same phase-to-ground voltage and current capacity per phase can transmit three times as much power using just 1.5 times as many wires.

Some high-power domestic appliances such as electric stoves and clothes dryers are powered by a split phase system at 240 volts or from two phases of a three phase system at 208 volts.

Electrical engineers try to design the three-phase power system for any one location so that the power drawn from each of three phases is the same, as far as possible at that site.

Three-Phase Power Explained

I’ll also explain the mystery behind why the 3 power lines are 120 degrees apart because that’s a crucial piece to understanding 3 phase power.

In each three of these lines, as the electrons are moving back and forth, they are not always moving in the same direction or speed as the other two lines.

In a 3 phase circuit, you usually take one of the 3 current carrying lines and connect it to another of the 3 current carrying lines.

Let’s use a 3 phase 208 volt line.

If you look at the chart, you can easily see the power output of any 2 lines.

So how do you calculate the power of combining 2 lines in a 3 phase circuit? The formula is volts times the square root of 3, which happens to be rounded off to 1.732.

That’s why we call it a 208 volt three-phase circuit, or a 208 volt 3 phase line.

Three-Phase Electric Power

What is a three-phase power supply system? As the name implies, there is no longer one but three phase conductors, each carrying an alternating current of the same frequency and voltage as that measured from a given neutral reference.

Each phase has a ±325V peak-to-peak voltage and 50Hz frequency, just like single phase, but has a phase shift of 120 degrees with respect to the two others.

Phase1(t) = 325 sin(2π 50 t + 0) Phase2(t) = 325 sin(2π 50 t + 2π/3) Phase3(t) = 325 sin(2π 50 t + 2π/3). In that example, the voltage between each phase and the neutral is still ±325VP-P, or 230VRMS. But what is the voltage measured between any two of the three phases? It is still a sine with the same frequency, here 50Hz, but with a voltage multiplied by √3, which is 1.73.

Here the three vectors in green show the respective voltage and phase for each of the three phases.

When using a wye configuration, the loads connected on each phase are arranged so that, as far as possible, equal power is drawn from each phase.

On the downside, there are some disadvantages of three-phase compared to single phase for electric installation: They include higher complexity, more costly transformers and slightly more safety risks, because the voltages are higher between pairs of phases.

The nice thing is that a precise phase control is then possible by simply adding a constant value to the phase register.

Three-Phase Electric Power

Electric power is defined as the rate of doing work in an electric circuit.

In other words, the electrical power is the energy expanded per unit time in an electric circuit, i.e. Electric Power,.

As the single phase instantaneous power is given by,.

Mathrm $$. Now, consider a balanced three phase system, then the above expression can be applied for each phase of the three phases of the three-phase system.

The instantaneous power in three phases can be written as,.

It is clear that the three phase instantaneous power is constant and does not vary with the supply frequency.

Determine the power drawn by a three phase load of power factor 0.85 when it is connected to a three phase supply of line voltage 415 V, 50 Hz. The current in each line is 4 A. Solution .

Complete List: Three-Phase Electric Power

Although single-phase power is more prevalent today, three-phase is chosen as the power of choice for many different types of applications.

Generators at power stations supply three-phase electricity.

This is a way of supplying three times as much electricity along three wires as can be supplied through two, without having to increase the thickness of the wires.

Three-phase electricity is by its very nature a much smoother form of electricity than single-phase or two-phase power.

It is this more consistent electrical power that allows machines to run more efficiently and last many years longer than their relative machines running on the other phases.

Some applications are able to work with three-phase power in ways that would not work on single phase at all.

Mind you, since three-phase electricity is rarely used for domestic purposes, the table below is only relevant to electricians, electrical engineers and other technically skilled people.

3-Phase Power Calculator + Formula

For this, we use the 3-phase power formula with the 1.732 factor and power factor.

On a 3-phase circuit, the 3-phase power calculator shows that the same 6 kW appliance draws 28.87 amps.

On a 3-phase circuit, the 3-phase power calculator shows that the same 6 kW appliance draws 48.11 amps.

Power factor is defined as a ratio between real power and apparent power.

It converts watts into kilowatts because we usually prefer to deal with kW instead of W. Because we need to use the power factor to calculate the kW from amps, this formula is also known as the ‘3-phase power factor formula’.

A higher power factor is proportional to higher power output.

You can use this example to see how the 3-phase power calculator works: A 100 amps motor on a 240V 3-phase circuit with a 0.9 power factor produces 37.41 kW of electrical power.

Post Idea #20: Single-phase electric power

Single-Phase Electric Power

In electrical engineering, single-phase electric power is the distribution of alternating current electric power using a system in which all the voltages of the supply vary in unison.

Because the voltage of a single phase system reaches a peak value twice in each cycle, the instantaneous power is not constant.

Standard frequencies of single-phase power systems are either 50 or 60 Hz. Special single-phase traction power networks may operate at 16.67 Hz or other frequencies to power electric railways.

Single phase power transmission took many years to develop.

The first full AC power system, based on single phase alternating current, was created by William Stanley with financial support from Westinghouse in 1886.

In 1897, experiments began for single phase power transmission.

Single-phase power may be used for electric railways; the largest single-phase generator in the world, at Neckarwestheim Nuclear Power Plant, supplied a railway system on a dedicated traction power network.

Single-Phase AC Power

In a single-phase AC electrical power distribution system, both the load current and the applied voltage that causes it to flow are transmitted along the length of the circuit conductors varying in amplitude with time and periodically reverse between positive and negative polarities.

For small-scale electrical-power generation as illustrated in Figure 2, the generation of AC power is normally limited to a single-phase AC source.

According to the winding and wiring configuration within the alternator, the passing of either the south or north pole of the rotating magnet, which would constitute 180 mechanical degrees, will generate either a positive or negative alternation of the electrical power from zero power to a positive or negative peak of power, and back to zero power in 180 electrical degrees.

It will go from zero power to a positive or negative peak of power and back to zero power in 180 electrical degrees.

In the United States, the utility electrical power transmission/distribution frequency is held at 60 Hz. In other countries, the utility electrical power transmission/distribution frequency may be held at 50 Hz. The power distribution frequency for aircraft and naval equipment is often held at 400 Hz. Normally, rms values of voltage and current are required for measurements of AC power.

In other words, an rms measure of 120 volts and 10 amps of AC power is equivalent of a measure of 120 volts and 10 amps of DC power.

In terms of power calculations of a single-phase AC circuit, the apparent power available from a feeder or branch circuit is simply the product of line voltage times line current.

Single Phase Electric Motor, Power Single Phase Induction Motor

A single-phase motor is an electric revolving machine.

A single-phase electric motor is a highly functional electrical to mechanical energy converter device.

A motor operating via single-phase power can produce pulsating torque.

A single-phase motor can’t deliver the same effectiveness and power factor in electronic applications similar to a three-phase system.

You can find a label on this motor that indicates the reversibility of a single-phase motor.

Since the power factor is the proportion of real power to the inductive power, a low PF value is not desirable to any kind of motor.

Single-phase motor renders impressive performance in power sectors.

Single-Phase Vs. Three-Phase Power Explanation

In electricity, the phase refers to the distribution of a load. What is the difference between single-phase and three-phase power supplies? Single-phase power is a two-wire alternating current power circuit.

Typically, there is one power wire-the phase wire-and one neutral wire, with current flowing between the power wire and the neutral wire.

Three-phase power is a three-wire ac power circuit with each phase ac signal 120 electrical degrees apart.

One other important difference between 3-phase power vs. single phase power is the consistency of the delivery of power.

Because of the peaks and dips in voltage, a single-phase power supply simply does not offer the same consistency as a three-phase power supply.

A three-phase power supply can transmit three times as much power as a single-phase power supply, while only needing one additional wire.

Thus, three-phase power supplies, whether they have three wires or four, use less conductor material to transmit a set amount of electrical power than do single-phase power supplies.

What Are Single Phase And Three Phase Connections?

In a single-phase supply, singles alternating current is supplied through a single wire, whereas in a three-phase system, the three wires have alternating current with a fixed time offset between the voltage waveforms.

A single-phase supply in India is a 230V supply through two wires, and a 3 phase supply is a 415 V supply through 4 wires, and in the home, the line is called 230V can be divided to give either one phase and the other neutral) at individual points.

1. Benefits of Single Phase Supply The advantages of choosing 1 phase supply are due to the following reasons.

The 3 phase power supply is used as a single-phase AC power supply.

Feature Single Phase Three Phase Definition Single-phase power supplies operate using a single conductor Three-phase power supplies operate using three conductors Wave Cycles It has only one specific wave cycle It has three distinct wave cycles Connections of Circuits Only one wire is needed to connect to the circuit Three wires are required to connect this power stage to the circuit.

Circuits Complexity Single-phase power supplies can be constructed simply Its construction is complicated The occurrence of Powers Failures Frequent power outages no power failure occurs Loss The maximum loss in one stage Loss in three-phase is minimum Efficiencies Its minimum efficiency is it has maximum efficiency Costs It is no more expensive than the three-phase powers supply It is a bit expensive as compared to single-phase Applications Used for home applications Three-phase power supplies are used in large industries to run heavy loads.

When the three-phase motor is not started with 1 phase power, it can operate on 1 phase master once started.

Single-Phase Vs. Three-Phase: The Difference Explained!

We will give you tips on means by which you can choose a suitable phase power.

The neutral wire provides a pathway for returning currents while the phase wire distributes the standard current load. The type of power transmission forms a single sine wave with a voltage of about 230V. In addition, it reaches a frequency that approximates 50 Hz. Some merits of single-phase power include; First, it distributes electricity for domestic uses and in residential homes.

As the name suggests, a three-phase power supply has three different power wires which offer electric services by alternating currents.

Uses two conductors Uses three conductors Constant power dips and peaks in the voltage render it inconsistent when delivering power.

The presence of three conductors ensures a consistent and steady power delivery.

Mostly efficient because it supplies more power, which is three times better than a single phase.

Since a three-phase power cannot start up a single phase, the capacitors aim to replace one of the three phases.

Single Phase Electrical Wiring Installation In Home

Single Phase wiring installation is the most common wiring in residential buildings.

In this step by step tutorial, we will show how to wire a single Phase Consumer Unit Installation in home from Utility Pole to a Single-Phase Energy Meter & Single-Phase Distribution board and then How to connect Single Phase Loads in single Phase Wiring Distribution System in home electric supply system.

The following fig at the end of this section will help you easily understand the difference between single phase and three phase voltage levels in the NEC and IEC. In the USA, for single phase 120V and split phase or 240V, the secondary winging of the distribution transformer mounted on the utility pole is center-tapped i.e. two hot wires and the center wire as Neutral.

If confused, wiring color codes for IEC and NEC are given below in the info section for both single phase and three phase wiring.

There is no much difference in IEC and NEC wiring for single phase MCB’s and associated wiring i.e. a single phase expect for 240V. In other words, 120V single phase load can be connected directly to the single pole MCB via three wires e.g. Black as Hot, White as Neutral and green with yellow stripe or bare conductor as protective ground.

Below are some typical single phase wiring diagrams used for power distribution in the home.

Wiring single phase 230V load and MCB in the Distribution board and consumer unit with RCD. Wiring single phase 230V Split Load load and MCB in the Distribution board and consumer.

Gold Reserve

A gold reserve is the gold held by a national central bank, intended mainly as a guarantee to redeem promises to pay depositors, note holders, or trading peers, during the eras of the gold standard, and also as a store of value, or to support the value of the national currency.

The World Gold Council estimates that all the gold ever mined, and that is accounted for, totalled 190,040 metric tons in 2019 but other independent estimates vary by as much as 20%. At a price of US$1,250 per troy ounce, reached on 16 August 2017, one metric ton of gold has a value of approximately $40.2 million.

After the Germans occupied Belgium and France in 1940, they demanded the Belgian gold reserve held in Senegal.

This data is used by the World Gold Council to periodically rank and report the gold holdings of countries and official organizations.

On 17 July 2015, China announced that it increased its gold reserves by about 57 percent from 1,054 to 1,658 tonnes, while disclosing its official gold reserves for the first time in six years.

In July 2015, the State Bank of Vietnam stated that gold reserves totalled 10 tonnes.

Gold Reserves By Country 2021

Gold plays an important part in central banks’ reserves management, and they are significant holders of gold.

This gold reserve data – compiled using IMF IFS statistics – tracks central banks’ reported purchases and sales along with gold as a percentage of their international reserves.

Global central bank gold reserves fell by 6t in February, the second consecutive month of net sales.

Uzbekistan was the largest seller in the month, decreasing its gold reserves by 22t to 339t. This is not the first significant sale from Uzbekistan in recent years as sales/purchase have been common due to active management of its gold reserves.

India bought 2.6t during the month, while Ireland, the only active developed market buyer, added 1t of gold to its reserves.

The percentage share held in gold of total foreign reserves is calculated by the World Gold Council.

The value of gold holdings is calculated using the end of quarter LBMA Gold Price, which is published daily by ICE Benchmark Administration for the value of other reserves are taken from IFS, table ‘Total Reserves minus Gold’.

Top 10 Countries With Largest Gold Reserves

The United States holds the number one spot with over 8,000 tonnes of gold in its vaults – nearly as much as the next three countries combined – and accounting for 79% of total reserves.

The only countries where gold represents a higher percent of reserves are Portugal at 80.1% and Venezuela at 82.4%. 10 central banks made net purchases of one tonne or more in 2020, highlighting the continued demand for the precious metal.

In seventh place is Switzerland, which actually has the world’s largest reserves of gold per capita.

The Russian Central Bank has been one of the largest buyers of gold for the past seven years and overtook China in 2018 to have the fifth largest reserves.

Although gold demand fell in 2017 after hitting an all-time high in 2016, this European country has seen gold investing steadily rise since the global financial crisis.

With the largest official holdings in the world, the U.S. lays claim to nearly as much gold as the next three countries combined.

Which state loves gold the most? Well, the state of Texas went so far as to create its very own Texas Bullion Depository to safeguard investors’ gold.

What Countries Have The Largest Gold Reserves?

The United States holds the largest stockpile of gold reserves in the world by a considerable margin.

For much of the 17th to 20th centuries, the paper money issued by national governments was denominated in terms of gold and acted as a legal claim to physical gold.

During the height of the Bretton Woods system of international exchange, when the U.S. offered to house and protect other countries’ gold in exchange for dollars, it was reported that between 90% and 95% of the entire world’s gold reserves lay in American vaults.

Germany keeps its gold reserves in the Deutsche Bundesbank in Frankfurt am Main, the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank branch in New York, and the Bank of England in London.

Who knew that the fixed rate of $35 per gold ounce was too low, eventually was forced to take the U.S. off the gold standard, ending the dollar’s automatic convertibility into gold.

This amount ranks it first among countries with the largest gold reserves.

The holders of the largest gold reserves in the world are the U.S., Germany, Italy, France, and Russia.

The Latest Heist: US Quietly Snatches Ukraine’S Gold Reserves

According to reports out of Kiev, the US has quietly transfers 33 tons of Ukrainian gold out of the country and back to vaults in the US. Presumably, this sovereign wealth transfer would be counted as partial “Collateral” for a fresh round of IMF, US FED, and ECB paper debt that is currently being organised for dumping into the Ukraine’s economic black hole.

Multiple inquiries to US Federal Reserve administrators into the location of the Ukraine’s gold have been met with the proverbial ‘pass the buck’, making tracking and tracking the final resting place of these 33 tonnes very difficult indeed – but one can expect that the NY Fed is probably the institution who has masterminded this financial heist.

Note how gold flows into New York, but has difficulty flowing out of US private banking hands as is the case with the ‘confiscation’ of Germany’s gold.

Numerous attempts by Bundesbank to repatriate its gold reserves have been met with a brick wall, and to date, Germany has only recovered a miniscule 5 tonnes directly from the NY Fed – out of the total 674 tonnes.

Prior to the NATO takeover of that country, Libya had one of the highest per capita gold reserves in the world, alongside Lebanon, giving Libya a distinct advantage should it carry out former Libyan leader Muammar Muhammad al-Gaddafi’s long-term financial transition to a gold-backed Libyan Dinar.

Like Libya, both Syria and Iran are two of the world’s last remaining nation states who both have state-run central banks and gold reserves which fall outside of the world’s private central banking syndicate.

What I find amazing about The Big Lie about Central Banks and gold is that if gold really is considered to be irrelevant, the how come Central Banks – especially the Fed – are so secretive about their gold storage and trading activities? What’s even more amazing is that no one other than Ron Paul and GATA asks them about this.

The IMF said on Thursday it had reached a draft funding agreement with Lebanon, but that Beirut needed to enact a batch of economic reforms before its board decides whether to approve the deal.

“We hope that the prior conditions set by the IMF are met in order to have a program approval by the board of the IMF,” Salameh told Reuters via text message, describing the agreement as “a positive event for Lebanon”.

“The agreement with the IMF will contribute to the unification of the exchange rate,” Salameh said.

The central bank had “Cooperated and facilitated the mission”, he said.

Salameh: Lebanon Maintains Position As Second Largest Gold Reserve In Arab Region

The bank’s gold reserves amounted to 17.547 billion US dollars.

Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh said on Friday that “The bank’s gold reserves amounted to 17.547 billion US dollars until the end of last February, adding that Lebanon maintains its position as the second largest gold reserve in the Arab region, with a wealth estimated at about 286 tons of gold.”

Salameh made the remarks during an exclusive interview with the director of the “Middle East News Agency” office in Lebanon, in which he noted that “The total cash reserves of foreign currencies amounted to 12 billion and 748 million dollars until the end of last February.”

He added that “The volume of the securities portfolio owned by the Lebanese Central Bank amounted until the end of last February to 4 billion and 197 million dollars, which includes euro bonds, a slight increase from last January.”

“The remittances of the Lebanese working abroad amounted to about 6 billion and 400 million dollars during 2021,” he explained.

Salameh also pointed out that “What happened to the financial sector in Lebanon is being addressed in the recovery plan that is being prepared by the Lebanese government in cooperation with the International Monetary Fund,” praising the “Initial agreement reached between the Lebanese government and the fund yesterday.”

He stressed that “News circulated about the bankruptcy of the Central Bank is incorrect,” adding that “The bank is exercising its role entrusted to it under Article 70 of the Monetary and Credit Law and will continue to do so, despite the losses that have afflicted the financial sector in Lebanon.”

Riad Salameh

Riad Toufic Salameh is the current Governor of Lebanon’s central bank, Banque du Liban since April 1993.

Riad Salameh was born in Antelias in 1950 into a Christian Maronite family of successful business people, long based in Liberia.

After the end of the civil war, Hariri became the prime minister and appointed Salameh as the governor of Lebanon’s central bank.

During the 2019-2020 Lebanese protests, Salameh had a feud with the Prime Minister Hassan Diab, as the government decided to default on its foreign obligations, but Salameh preferred to keep using foreign reserves to pay interest to international creditors.

Salameh is a member of the board of governors at the International Monetary Fund and at the Arab Monetary Fund.

In July 2020, a group of Lebanese lawyers formally accused Salameh of various crimes, including the embezzlement of central bank assets, and the mismanagement of public funds.

The inquiry is to audit the country’s financial system and to verify whether political figures have used their position to override banking restrictions on foreign currency withdrawals and transfers of funds abroad. In 2021, France and Switzerland opened investigations regarding money laundering by Salameh.

The Biden administration has imposed sanctions on three alleged Hezbollah “Financial facilitators”, accusing them of providing material assistance to the Lebanese group.

“The designations of the individuals and entity described below demonstrate Treasury’s ongoing efforts to target Hizballah’s continued attempts to exploit the global financial sector and evade sanctions.”

The sanctions freeze the three individuals’ assets in the United States and make it a potential crime for American citizens to do business with them.

On Tuesday, the US Treasury accused Hezbollah of corruption and contributing to Lebanon’s economic collapse.

While Hezbollah and its allies have faced the bulk of US sanctions in Lebanon, last year the Biden administration also sanctioned a businessman linked to former Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

In September, the US administration, in coordination with Qatar, slapped sanctions on several alleged Hezbollah financiers in the Gulf region.

Tuesday’s Treasury sanctions were announced as US and Iranian negotiators are engaged in indirect talks in Vienna to revive the 2015 nuclear deal that saw Tehran scale back its nuclear programme in exchange for a lifting of sanctions against its economy.

Lebanon Charges Central Bank Chief With Corruption

Lebanese Judge Ghada Aoun told various media outlets Monday that she had charged the head of the country’s central bank, Riad Salameh, with illegal enrichment and money laundering during Lebanon’s economic crisis.

Aoun told Reuters and the AP that the charge is linked to purchases and rentals of apartments in Paris, some of it to the central bank, which he had been heading for nearly three decades.

The banking sector began a two-day strike on Monday to protest recent moves by Lebanon’s judiciary against local lenders.

The banks’ protests were sparked after Judge Aoun froze the assets of six of Lebanon’s largest banks and those of their board of directors last week to investigate possible transfers of billions of dollars abroad as they imposed informal capital controls.

Lebanon opened a local investigation into Salameh’s wealth last year, after Switzerland requested assistance in an investigation into more than $300 million that he had reportedly embezzled out of the central bank with the help of his brother.

The collapse meant private banks had to lock depositors’ dollar accounts.

Last year, the government carried out a forensic audit into the central bank to uncover what caused, and who was responsible for, the financial disaster.

Lebanon: Central Bank Chief Salameh ‘Suspect’ In 120m Euro Asset Seizure Across EU

Lebanese central bank governor Riad Salameh is a suspect in a joint case conducted across several European Union states which seized some 120 million euros of Lebanese assets, prosecutors in Germany said on Monday.

Swiss prosecutors suspect Salameh and his brother Raja of embezzling some $330m, according to a letter the Swiss attorney general sent to Lebanese officials last year.

The Eurojust statement said the assets seized included some 35 million euros’ worth in Germany that included properties in Hamburg and Munich, two property complexes in Paris worth 16 million euros, and Monaco bank accounts worth 46 million euros.

The judge is investigating whether a number of residential apartments in Paris belong to the bank governor, a judicial source told AFP. Earlier this year, Aoun, who is overseeing several legal cases against Riad Salemeh, slapped him with a travel ban for alleged financial misconduct.

The central bank chief has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

Lebanon has been mired in a devastating economic crisis since 2019, when the financial system collapsed under the weight of decades of state corruption, waste and mismanagement, paralysing the banking system.

Riad Salemeh, who had led the central bank for three decades, is widely blamed for policies that contributed to Lebanon’s financial collapse.

Published July 17, 2021.Updated Aug. 4, 2021.BEIRUT, Lebanon – For decades, Riad Salameh, Lebanon’s central bank chief, was lauded at home and abroad as a financial wizard who kept the economy running and the currency stable despite wars, assassinations and frequent political turmoil.

More than 20 interviews with Lebanese, Western and monetary officials, economists and former colleagues of Mr. Salameh’s paint a picture of a brilliant and shrewd yet secretive operator who built an empire inside the central bank and used it to make himself essential to rich and powerful players across Lebanon’s political spectrum.

The French judges are investigating a complaint by Sherpa, a French anticorruption group, that accuses Mr. Salameh, his brother Raja Salameh, other relatives and Marianne Hoayek, who heads the central bank’s executive office, of illicitly sweeping funds from Lebanon into Swiss banks and then laundering millions in France through high-end real estate purchases, including luxury property near the Eiffel Tower.

Mr. Salameh’s lawyer in France, Pierre-Olivier Sur, said Mr. Salameh disputed the entirety of the allegations.

Separately, the Swiss attorney general’s office is examining a web of bank accounts from Switzerland to Panama that it says Mr. Salameh and his brother may have used to shelter the “Possible embezzlement” of central bank funds and to “Carry out money laundering.”

Swiss prosecutors, who are basing their investigation on a complaint brought by Accountability Now, an organization established in 2020 by Lebanese and Swiss human rights activists, say documents show that Mr. Salameh hired Forry Associates, a brokerage firm owned by his brother, to handle central bank sales of government bonds, and that from 2002 to 2015 the bank transferred at least $330 million in commissions to the firm’s Swiss account.

In the WikiLeaks diplomatic cables, a former U.S. ambassador to Lebanon, Jeffrey Feltman, described Mr. Salameh in 2007 as having “Whiffs of rumored corrupt behavior, a penchant for secrecy and extralegal autonomy at the Central Bank.”.

Melinda French Gates Says Marriage To Bill Gates ‘Just Wasn’T Healthy’ Before Divorce

Melinda French Gates is offering her perspective about the end of her marriage to billionaire Bill Gates in a sit-down interview with CBS News’ Gayle King this week.

The former couple announced their divorce in May, with French Gates saying the marriage was “Irretrievably broken” in her court filing.

In the interview, set to air Thursday, French Gates described grieving her marriage after Gates was found to have had an affair with a Microsoft staffer in 2019.”I certainly believe in forgiveness, so I thought we had worked through some of that,” she told King.

Though French Gates said there had been a lot of tears and some anger recently, she is “Really excited” about her future.

The divorce was finalized in August without spousal support, which French Gates said was not necessary in her original filing.

Both French Gates and her former husband are operating as co-chairs of the Gates Foundation, the philanthropic and research nonprofit founded by the two, following the divorce.

If after two years they decide they cannot work together, French Gates will resign her positions as co-chair and trustee in a buyout from Gates.

We offer a wide array of nitrogen generator systems and accessories.

Our nitrogen generator systems deliver low operating costs and rapid return on investment.

Identify the application that the nitrogen generator is supplying and the end result required for the task.

Both PSA nitrogen generators and membrane systems generate high volumes of nitrogen.

If your application requires 99.5 percent or higher purity, the PSA nitrogen generator is the best choice.

The costs for operating a PSA nitrogen generator are greater per volume of nitrogen produced than for membrane units.

Nitrogen Generator

The technology of air-to-nitrogen production with the use of adsorption processes in nitrogen generators is well studied and widely applied at industrial facilities for the recovery of high-purity nitrogen.

Edit] High nitrogen purity: PSA nitrogen generator plants allow production of high-purity nitrogen from air, which membrane systems are unable to provide – up to 99.9995% nitrogen.

Low operating costs: By substitution of out-of-date air separation plants nitrogen production savings largely exceed 50%. The net cost of nitrogen produced by nitrogen generators is significantly less than the cost of bottled or liquefied nitrogen.

Environmental impact: Generating nitrogen gas is a sustainable, environmentally friendly and energy efficient approach to providing pure, clean, dry nitrogen gas.

Edit] Economic benefits: By substitution of cryogenic or adsorption systems nitrogen production savings generally exceed 50%. The net cost of nitrogen produced by nitrogen complexes is significantly less than the cost of cylinder or liquefied nitrogen.

Nitrogen maintains a more stable pressure when heated and cooled as a result of being dry and doesn’t permeate the tire as easily due to being a slightly larger molecule than O2.Chemical and petrochemical industries: The primary and very important application of nitrogen in chemical and petrochemical industries is the provision of inert environment aimed at ensuring general industrial safety during cleaning and protection of process vessels.

To prevent corrosion, nitrogen generators are used in place of or in conjunction with a compressed air system to provide supervisory nitrogen gas in place of air for dry pipe and pre-action fire sprinkler systems.

Nitrogen Gas Generators And On-Site Nitrogen Gas In Your Laboratory

Nitrogen generators or nitrogen generation systems are machines that can separate nitrogen molecules from compressed air.

Peak Scientific’s Nitrogen generators are used in laboratories all over the world to supply various analytical instruments with the most reliable nitrogen gas source.

Our N2 gas generators can produce up to 99.999% pure nitrogen at the push of a button for your laboratory.

Nitrogen generation systems are still the most efficient way to supply instrument gas as, unlike gas cylinders, a nitrogen gas generator never runs out of gas and constantly supplies a consistent high purity of gas.

Similar again to the membrane nitrogen generator, an advanced PSA nitrogen generator will also contain prefiltration stages to remove dust particles and moisture from the air before entering the CMS. Nitrogen generators vs nitrogen gas cylinders.

These inconsistencies and inconveniences are eliminated by a nitrogen gas generator which is why more and more labs are turning to nitrogen generators to supply their instrument gas.

The modern landscape of laboratory nitrogen gas has been permanently altered with the introduction of nitrogen generators bringing on-site gas generation to labs.

Nitrogen Generators How It Works

Atmospheric air contains essentially 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen.

Ordinary dry compressed air is filtered and passed through a technically advanced bundle of hollow membrane fibers where nitrogen is separated from the feed air by selective permeation.

Pressure, flow rate and membrane size/quantity are the main variables that affect nitrogen production.

Nitrogen purity is controlled by throttling the outlet from the membrane bundle(s).

At a given pressure and membrane size, increasing the nitrogen flow allows more oxygen to remain in the gas stream, lowering nitrogen purity.

Conversely, decreasing nitrogen flow increases purity.

For a particular purity, higher air pressure to the membrane gives a higher nitrogen flow rate.

Nitrogen Gas Generator

Eliminates drawbacks of conventional nitrogen sources-gives you control of rate and purity of nitrogen production.

The nitrogen membrane component of a nitrogen generator provides a low-cost, highly efficient means of separating air into its component gases.

The hollow fibers of a membrane nitrogen generator are assembled parallel to a central core tube, and the bundle is inserted into an outer case to form the air separation module.

Each nitrogen generator system consists of a membrane module, controls and instrumentation, and coalescing filters and traps to remove oil and liquids, organic contaminants, and other particulates from the feed air.

Installation of these small nitrogen generators merely requires piping compressed air to the system and piping the nitrogen to its destinations.

Nitrogen membrane systems produce both nitrogen and oxygen enriched air.

With more oxygen permeating the membrane, the oxygen level in the nitrogen product gas is reduced and purity improved.

Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor

Ligands such as epidermal growth factor and tumor growth factor alpha bind and stabilize EGFR. The receptors dimerize at the cell surface, are phosphorylated at their cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase domains, and serve as sites for proteins and signal transducers such as Ras to bind.

EGFR OverexpressionEGFR expression refers to measurement of levels of receptor protein by IHC and is distinct from detection of an actual EGFR mutation.

Ligand binding induces receptor dimerization, and the ligand-bound EGFR activates tyrosine kinase-mediated signaling pathways, leading to tumor proliferation, survival, and resistance to apoptosis.

Ligand overexpression increases EGFR dimerization, activation, and tyrosine kinase-mediated signaling, which can lead to uncontrolled tumor growth.

EGFR and the relatedhuman epidermal growth factor receptor.

Third-generation TKIs aimed at EGFR have preferential binding characteristics for the mutated receptor.

Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor MutationsEGFR is a member of the ErbB receptor tyrosine kinase family, and its dysregulation leads to the development and progression of NSCLC. EGFR-TKI blocks this signaling pathway and has proved effective for NSCLC with EGFR mutations within the TK domain.

Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor

The epidermal growth factor receptor is a member of the ErbB family of receptors, a subfamily of four closely related receptor tyrosine kinases: EGFR, HER2/neu, Her 3 and Her 4.

Deficient signaling of the EGFR and other receptor tyrosine kinases in humans is associated with diseases such as Alzheimer’s, while over-expression is associated with the development of a wide variety of tumors.

Interruption of EGFR signalling, either by blocking EGFR binding sites on the extracellular domain of the receptor or by inhibiting intracellular tyrosine kinase activity, can prevent the growth of EGFR-expressing tumours and improve the patient’s condition.

ErbB2 has no known direct activating ligand, and may be in an activated state constitutively or become active upon heterodimerization with other family members such as EGFR. Upon activation by its growth factor ligands, EGFR undergoes a transition from an inactive monomeric form to an active homodimer.

In addition to forming homodimers after ligand binding, EGFR may pair with another member of the ErbB receptor family, such as ErbB2/Her2/neu, to create an activated heterodimer.

The identification of EGFR as an oncogene has led to the development of anticancer therapeutics directed against EGFR, including gefitinib, erlotinib, afatinib, brigatinib and icotinib for lung cancer, and cetuximab for colon cancer.

Another method is using small molecules to inhibit the EGFR tyrosine kinase, which is on the cytoplasmic side of the receptor.

Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor: Structure-Function Informing The Design Of Anticancer Therapeutics

Research on the epidermal growth factor family and the family of receptors has progressed rapidly in recent times.

New crystal structures of the ectodomains with different ligands, the activation of the kinase domain through oligomerisation and the use of fluorescence techniques have revealed profound conformational changes on ligand binding.

The control of cell signaling from the EGFR-family is complex, with heterodimerisation, ligand affinity and signaling cross-talk influencing cellular outcomes.

Several members of the EGFR-family are overexpressed and/or mutated in cancer cells.

The perturbation of EGFR-family signaling drives the malignant phenotype of many cancers and both inhibitors and antagonists of signaling from these receptors have already produced therapeutic benefits for patients.

The design of affibodies, antibodies, small molecule inhibitors and even immunotherapeutic drugs targeting the EGFR-family has yielded promising new approaches to improving outcomes for cancer patients.

In this review, we describe recent discoveries which have increased our understanding of the structure and dynamics of signaling from the EGFR-family, the roles of ligand processing and receptor cross-talk.

If you experience a serious side effect, you or your doctor may send a report to the Food and Drug Administration’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online or by phone.

Osimertinib

Osimertinib is used to treat locally advanced or metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer, if the cancer cells are positive for the T790M mutation in the gene coding for EGFR or for activating EGFR mutations.

In the US, EGFR exon 19 deletions, exon 21 L858R mutations or the T790M status of the patient prior to treatment with osimertinib must be detected by a federally approved companion diagnostic test.

Osimertinib is metabolized by CYP3A4 and CYP3A5, so substances that strongly inhibit either enzyme, like macrolide antibiotics, antifungals, and antivirals may increase exposure to osimertinib, and substances like rifampicin that activate either enzyme may decrease the effectiveness of osimertinib.

Osimertinib binds irreversibly to epidermal growth factor receptor proteins expressed by EGFR with a T790M mutation; it also binds irreversibly to EGFR with an L858R mutation and with an exon 19 deletion.

Osimertinib is provided as the mesylate; the chemical formula is C28H33N7O2·CH4O3S, and the molecular weight is 596 g/mol.

The drug discovery program that led to osimertinib started in 2009 and yielded the drug by 2012; the process was structure-driven and aimed to find a third generation EGFR inhibitor that would selectively target the T790M form of the EGFR receptor.

In February 2016, the EMA provisionally approved osimertinib under an accelerated process-the first approval under the program.

Osimertinib

On March 30, 2017, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted regular approval to osimertinib for the treatment of patients with metastatic epidermal growth factor receptor T790M mutation-positive non-small cell lung cancer, as detected by an FDA-approved test, whose disease has progressed on or after EGFR tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy.

In November 2015, osimertinib received accelerated approval for this indication based on an overall response rate of 59% among 411 patients in two single-arm clinical trials.

AURA3 randomized 419 patients to receive osimertinib 80 mg orally once daily or platinum-based doublet chemotherapy.

Patients on the chemotherapy arm with radiological progression according to both investigator and blinded independent central review were offered osimertinib at progression.

In patients with measurable central nervous system lesions on baseline brain scans, the confirmed CNS ORR, assessed by independent central review, was 57% and 25% in the osimertinib and chemotherapy arms, respectively.

Serious adverse reactions were evaluated in 833 patients receiving osimertinib.

Full prescribing information is available at: PRESCRIBING INFORMATION TAGRISSO. FDA previously granted osimertinib Fast Track and Breakthrough Therapy Designation for the current indication, as well as Orphan Drug Designation for the treatment of EGFR mutation-positive NSCLC. A description of FDA expedited programs is in the Guidance for Industry: Expedited Programs for Serious Conditions-Drugs and Biologics.
