What Is Network Security?

Network security combines multiple layers of defenses at the edge and in the network.

Each network security layer implements policies and controls.

Authorized users gain access to network resources, but malicious actors are blocked from carrying out exploits and threats.

How we live, work, play, and learn have all changed.

Every organization that wants to deliver the services that customers and employees demand must protect its network.

Network security also helps you protect proprietary information from attack.

Network Security Solutions

Network and Security Threats Network threats are unlawful or malicious activities that intend to take advantage of network vulnerabilities.

These tools are gaining popularity in the cybersecurity community as companies are relying on mechanics like cloud and VOIP. Network monitoring software are helpful in monitoring network traffic whenever the stress on the network increases.

Application security helps establish security guidelines for applications that are relevant to network security.

Reduced costs: The cost of cloud security is cheaper than many traditional network security With cloud, the task of multiple departments spending long hours searching for security risks can be avoided.

A Network Administrator who understands networking tools and technologies will absorb knowledge about network security faster than their peers.

A Network Administrator with prior understanding of networking tools and technologies will absorb knowledge about network security faster than their peers.

Certified Network Defender focuses on developing network defense skills among network administrators.

Network Security refers to the measures taken by any enterprise or organisation to secure its computer network and data using both hardware and software systems.

The most basic example of Network Security is password protection where the user of the network oneself chooses.

The network security solutions protect various vulnerabilities of the computer systems such as:.1.

Network Security : Working The basic principle of network security is protecting huge stored data and network in layers that ensures a bedding of rules and regulations that have to be acknowledged before performing any activity on the data.

Physical Network Security: This is the most basic level that includes protecting the data and network though unauthorized personnel from acquiring the control over the confidentiality of the network.

Technical Network Security: It primarily focuses on protecting the data stored in the network or data involved in transitions through the network.

Administrative Network Security: This level of network security protects user behavior like how the permission has been granted and how the authorization process takes place.

What Is Network Security? The Different Types Of Protections

Network Security is vital in protecting client data and information, keeping shared data secure and ensuring reliable access and network performance as well as protection from cyber threats.

A well designed network security solution reduces overhead expenses and safeguards organizations from costly losses that occur from a data breach or other security incident.

Network segmentation defines boundaries between network segments where assets within the group have a common function, risk or role within an organization.

This is a very different approach from that provided by traditional security solutions, like VPNs, that grant a user full access to the target network.

Software-defined Networking and Software-defined Wide Area Network solutions enable network security solutions in private, public, hybrid and cloud-hosted Firewall-as-a-Service deployments.

Network Security is vital in protecting client data and information, it keeps shared data secure, protects from viruses and helps with network performance by reducing overhead expenses and costly losses from data breaches, and since there will be less downtime from malicious users or viruses, it can save businesses money in the long-term.

Check Point’s Network Security solutions simplify your network security without impacting the performance, provide a unified approach for streamlined operations, and enable you to scale for business growth.

Definition, Threats And Solutions

Network security is the key to keeping that sensitive information safe, and as more private data is stored and shared on vulnerable devices, network security will only grow in importance and necessity.

Adequately protecting networks and their connected devices requires comprehensive network training, a thorough understanding of how networks actually work and the skills to put that knowledge into practice.

In order to effectively implement and maintain secure networks, it’s important to understand the common vulnerabilities, threats and issues facing IT professionals today.

A local area network is a series of computers linked together to form a network in a circumscribed location.

Network Segmentation: Network segmentation involves breaking down a larger network into various subnetworks or segments.

You can use analyzers to troubleshoot network problems and detect intrusions into your network.

Network troubleshooting is an essential skill to have when looking for a job as a network engineer or network administrator, since companies are primarily concerned with minimizing their network downtime.

Differences In Network Security Vs Cyber Security

The difference between network security vs. cyber security isn’t always transparent.

Generally speaking, both cyber security and network security are subsets of information security aiming to block access to unauthorized users.

Network security professionals typically take on other tasks to secure the network security system, including setting up firewalls, running antivirus software, and creating virtual private networks.

The network security professional ensures that the network security measures remain in top shape so that connectivity and productivity are not interrupted and establishes preventative measures to combat unauthorized access.

While a network security professional is securing the connections and pathways within the network, a cyber security professional focuses more on protecting the organization from outside invaders.

Cyber security is a subset of information security, and network security is primarily a subset of cyber security.

Network security can make for a great career! Most network security analysts around the country earn over six figures in annual income.

Low-Fat Diet: Pros, Cons, And What You Can Eat

A low-fat diet is an eating plan that substantially limits the amount of dietary fat consumed, regardless of the type of fat.

Foods included in a low-fat diet may be naturally low in fat or fat-free, like fruits and vegetables.

In addition to total fat grams, the label is also likely to provide information about saturated fat grams and trans fat grams.

Learn About Different Types of Fat Most low-fat diets do not make a distinction between different types of fat.

Even foods high in fat can be consumed in smaller amounts as long as your total daily fat intake falls within your goal range.

By watching your fat intake on a low-fat diet, you may become more mindful about healthier fat choices and consume mono- and polyunsaturated fats instead. Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease: Some studies have shown that men who reduced total fat and saturated fat from 36% and 12% of total calories to 27% and 8% of total calories, respectively, saw a substantial decline in their total and LDL cholesterol levels.

There is strong evidence to suggest that reducing saturated fat and eliminating trans fat from your diet is a smart nutritional approach.

Low-Fat Foods

A good rule of thumb when you’re reading food labels: For every 100 calories, if the product has 3 grams of fat or less, it’s a low-fat product.

This means 30% or less of the calories come from fat.

Foods like margarine, mayonnaise, and some salad dressings that get most of their calories from fat must have half or less than half the fat of the regular version of the food to be called “Light.” These foods don’t have to meet the 30% cutoff for number of calories from fat to be considered low-fat.

Neufchatel or “Light” cream cheese or fat-free cream cheese.

Fat-free American cheese or other types of fat-free cheeses.

Beans, peas, and lentils, cooked without added fats or fatty meats.

These foods supply half the fat than the regular version of the food, but most of their calories still come from fat.

NCBI Bookshelf

The main four types of dietary fats include polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, trans, and saturated fats.

Over the years, although there has been some decline in the percentage of fat intake, there has been a paradoxical increase in the total amount of fat intake, suggesting that the total energy intake has increased.

The association between dietary fat and the risk of cancer development has had consistent support through multiple studies.

There is epidemiologic evidence demonstrating associations between dietary fat intake and breast, prostate, colon, and even lung cancers in humans.

Most of the cross-sectional studies show that obese patients have a higher intake of energy from fat than people with a healthy BMI. Fat being an energy-dense food contributes to excess calorie ingestion as compared to other foods.

Recent data suggest that for a reduction in absolute amounts of fat consumed and a decline in the percentage of total dietary intake at the population level, a concomitant decrease in body weight has not occurred.

Comparison of monounsaturated fat with carbohydrates as a replacement for saturated fat in subjects with a high metabolic risk profile: studies in the fasting and postprandial states.

What You Need To Know

A low-fat diet is an eating plan that is low in total fat, unhealthy fat, and cholesterol.

You may need to follow a low-fat diet if you have trouble digesting or absorbing fat.

What do I need to know about the different types of fat in food? Limit unhealthy fats.

Saturated fat: Limit saturated fat to less than 7% of your total daily calories.

Monounsaturated fats: These are found in avocados, nuts, and vegetable oils, such as olive, canola, and sunflower oil.

Omega-3 fats can also be found in plant foods, such as walnuts, flaxseed, soybeans, and canola oil… What foods should I limit or avoid? Grains:Snacks that are made with partially hydrogenated oils, such as chips, regular crackers, and butter-flavored popcorn.

What are some other ways I can decrease fat? Read food labels before you buy foods.

13 Low-Fat Foods That Are Good For Your Health

All of these vegetables have virtually no fat, making them an excellent addition to a low-fat diet.

Alongside their nutrients, cruciferous vegetables provide sulfur-containing substances known as glucosinolates, which are responsible for the vegetables’ bitter flavor.

Glucosinolates have demonstrated anti-cancer effects in test-tube and animal studies.

Many observational studies in humans also link high consumption of cruciferous vegetables to a reduced risk of several cancers, including bladder, breast, colon, liver, lung and stomach cancer.

Keep in mind that cooking methods can affect the number of glucosinolates available in cruciferous vegetables.

You may absorb the most glucosinolates if you eat these vegetables raw, steamed or sauteed instead of boiled.

Summary Cruciferous vegetables are low in fat and high in sulfur-containing substances known as glucosinolates, which may have anti-cancer effects.

Low-Fat And Low-Cholesterol Diet Plan

A diet which is low in fat because it is high in fruits and vegetables as well as fibre from whole grains is likely to be a healthy one, and this is the basis of many weight loss programmes such as Weightwatchers® and Slimming World®.

There is a growing body of evidence which suggests that a diet high in carbohydrates, particularly sugar, is a common trigger for obesity in many individuals, and that eating fat is not what makes us gain weight.

Different brands may vary in their fat content – get into the habit of looking at labels when you shop and learn which brands are lower in fat.

Food typeLow-fat foodsMedium-fat foodsHigher-fat foodsCereal foodsBread and flour, oats, breakfast cereals, rice and pasta are all low in fat but the higher-fibre varieties have other benefits too.

Not all fat is bad. Although all fats are high in calories, we need some fat in our diet.

Some types of fat are actually good for our health and some vitamins are dissolved in fat, so a low-fat diet may be lacking in these.

These are mainly found in animal products such as the fat on meat, in lard, and the fat in dairy products such as butter, full-cream milk, etc.

7 Day Low Fat Diet Meal Plan

The article below will cover everything you need to know about following a diet plan for a flat belly and offer a sample 7 day plan to follow.

Fat has the most calories per gram when compared to carbohydrates and protein, so often reducing fatty foods from your diet will result in a lower calorie intake and therefore, help you lose weight.

We recommend following a Mediterranean-style diet if you’re looking to follow a low fat diet.

Cooking is done predominantly with olive oil instead of butter, which contains lots of saturated fats.

Heat the oil in a frying pan with a lid, then cook the onions, chilli, garlic and coriander stalks for 5 minutes until soft.

If You’Re Gonna Get Your Dumbbells At Dick’S, These Are The Ones To Buy

1) Adjustability: A superior dumbbells set is potentially a one-and-done purchase, but it can only extend its usefulness if it comes with enough weight to accommodate all of your important lifts.

The Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells are easily adjustable from five pounds all the way up to 52.5 pounds in primarily five-pound increments.

Or to put it super bluntly, the Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells are gonna save you a lot of cash.

The Only Real Complaint: If you’re the type of person who likes to slam your weight to the ground for emphasis after a heavy lift, or launch your weights into the sky during ballistic training like they’re medicine balls, the Bowflex SelectTech Dumbbells aren’t for you.

These are the durable, metal, traditional dumbbells that your grandfather grew up training with, and you don’t need to be all that concerned with dropping them if your workouts skew toward the aggressive and somewhat reckless.

So if you’ve grown accustomed to dialing up your desired weight with the flick of a wrist, the fact that you’ll need to screw and then unscrew collars from your dumbbells to change the weights – while still potentially having to cope with the feeling of spinning weight plates during your lifts – is going to be maddening.

Their Absolute Best Feature: The NordicTrack 50-Pound iSelect Dumbbells are the epitome of state-of-the-art.

Marine Energy

Marine energy or marine power refers to the energy carried by ocean waves, tides, salinity, and ocean temperature differences.

The term marine energy encompasses both wave power i.e. power from surface waves, and tidal power i.e. obtained from the kinetic energy of large bodies of moving water.

Indonesia as archipelagic country with three quarter of the area is ocean, has 49 GW recognized potential ocean energy and has 727 GW theoretical potential ocean energy.

The world’s first marine energy test facility was established in 2003 to kick start the development of the marine energy industry in the UK. Based in Orkney, Scotland, the European Marine Energy Centre has supported the deployment of more wave and tidal energy devices than at any other single site in the world.

Leading the €11m FORESEA project, which provides funding support to ocean energy technology developers to access Europe’s world-leading ocean energy test facilities, EMEC will welcome a number of wave and tidal clients to their pipeline for testing on site.

Beyond device testing, EMEC also provides a wide range of consultancy and research services, and is working closely with Marine Scotland to streamline the consenting process for marine energy developers.

The physical presence of marine energy projects and their potential to alter the behavior of marine mammals, fish, and seabirds with attraction or avoidance.

ScienceDirect Topics

Marine energy encompasses wave energy, tidal energy, ocean thermal energy, osmotic energy, and ocean current energy; most marine energy harnessing technologies are still in their infancy.

Refers to seawater-based renewable energy, including tidal energy, wave energy, ocean current energy, and energy created from temperature and salinity differences.

Energy created from salinity differences has the greatest energy density among all ocean energies, with an osmotic pressure of 24 atm, equivalent to a head of 240 m and also comparable to the value in China.

Biomass energy is a clean energy with biomass as its carrier.

Case studies showed that integrating renewable energy with ocean energy may be an advantageous way to utilize energy resources to generate various outputs.

The energy of the ocean is stored partially as kinetic energy from the motion of waves and currents and partly as thermal energy from the sun.

The table contains figures for the annual energy that might be extracted from each resource based on figures from the International Energy Agency, and figures for the potential generating capacity each might yield, based on research from Powertech Labs. The largest resource based on the IEA figures is wave power that could, in principle, provide up to 80,000 TWh of energy each year.

Marine Energy Basics

Marine energy, also known as marine and hydrokinetic energy or marine renewable energy, is a renewable power source that is harnessed from the natural movement of water, including waves, tides, and river and ocean currents.

Marine energy can also be harnessed from temperature differences in water through a process known as ocean thermal energy conversion.

Marine energy technologies use the kinetic energy of waves, currents, tides, and thermal energy of deep cold water to surface water conversion to generate clean energy.

Some wave energy converters use buoys to capture energy from the ocean’s vertical and horizontal movement, while turbines can harness energy from tides and currents.

Learn more about the different types of marine energy resources on the Portal and Repository for Information on Marine Renewable Energy.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory and Mystic Aquarium teamed up to create a series of animated videos that explain marine energy technologies.

Most marine energy technologies are submerged or otherwise located out at sea, meaning they generate clean energy while maintaining beautiful ocean and water vistas.

Enel Green Power

Over 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered with ocean and sea water.

Using the hidden power of such an abundant natural resource is the greatest challenge of the Third Millennium.

Currently, marine energy is an enormous untapped reserve with inexhaustible potential.

If we could take full advantage of ocean and sea power, all of the energy consumption forecast by the International Energy Agency by 2035 would already be covered.

Seas and oceans have just begun to play a role on the renewable energy stage.

The IRENA 2019 report confers 500 MW of installed capacity on marine energy, still a far cry from its “Elder siblings”.

According to IEA’s Ocean Energy System 2014 and Ocean Energy Europe 2016, by 2050 marine energy will have spread mainly throughout Europe, creating an estimated 40,000 jobs and providing up to 100 GW on the Continent, the equivalent of 10% of electricity consumption.

Advantages And Disadvantages

Marine energy has several types of energy, there are tidal energy, wave energy, ocean current energy, ocean thermal energy, and osmotic energy.

Below is the definition the five types of marine energy, how it works, and the advantages as well as disadvantages of each energy.

Predictable energy source, which means the source of the energy is easier to predict.

Wave energy is a type of marine energy which uses ocean waves as its energy source.

The kinetic energy inside the surface ocean waves is then captured by wave energy technologies to do useful works.

The source of ocean thermal energy derives from absorbed solar energy in the ocean.

Osmotic Energy has two well-known names, there are salinity gradient power and blue energy.

Super Watt Wave Catcher Barge

Most of our electrical power today comes from hydrocarbon and nuclear fuel sources, and we must depend on these fuel sources for many years to come as the international power needs continue to grow and to fuel the construction of the alternative energy systems until these systems can produce significant power to match a gradual or rapid shortfall in the hydrocarbon and nuclear fuel systems.

Are we developing enough alternative energy options to lessen the impact of hydrocarbon supply and demand changes? The answer is no and largely due to the low economics of the renewable.

Marine energy is a very attractive alternative energy since it causes no pollution, is virtually unlimited, and can be a major power contributor in a very short period of time.

Alternatives, like marine energy, can help cushion the impact gradual hydrocarbon energy production declines and associated higher energy production costs with time by supplying needed power to offset the decline.

Energy companies are facing higher and higher oil and gas exploration and development costs making it harder and harder to find economical opportunities with low risk and predictable cost and schedule outcomes.

Energy companies are looking at other ways to supply the world’s future energy needs including the use of alternative energy.

The offshore industry has the tools, the experience and the technology needed to make these structures a reality and make them last for hundreds of years, and the Marine Energy Corporation uses these systems and know-how in its patents to make these installations the new power generation systems of choice.

Why Is Marine Energy The Wave Of The Future?

The technology we use to capture all this heat and movement generally falls within four major categories: wave energy converters, tidal energy converters, ocean thermal converters, and salinity gradient technologies.

The Department of Energy held an 18-month long design-built-test competition referred to as the Wave Energy Prize.

The goal was to optimize the design of Wave Energy Converter devices in order to double the efficiency of existing devices, thus reducing the cost of wave energy.

Established in 2003, the European Marine Energy Center created the world’s first grid-connected wave energy test site off the coast of Orkney, Scotland.

The 2016 State of the Science report completed by the Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory identified collisions with marine animals and noise pollution as the highest risks associated with marine energy devices.

The Future of MHK. The potential of ocean energy is enormous, with estimates for generation ranging from 100 – 400 percent of the global energy demand.

Industry experts generally view marine energy as a complement to existing renewable sources, providing stable and predictable generation in order to mitigate spikes in energy demand.

National Cancer Institute

The types of treatment that you have will depend on the type of cancer you have and how advanced it is.

Some people with cancer will have only one treatment.

Most people have a combination of treatments, such as surgery with chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.

You may also have immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or hormone therapy.

Clinical trials are research studies that involve people.

When you need treatment for cancer, you have a lot to learn and think about.

Talking with your doctor and learning all you can about all your treatment options, including clinical trials, can help you make a decision you feel good about.

Diagnosis And Treatment

Your doctor uses your cancer’s stage to determine your treatment options and your chances for a cure.

The goal of a primary treatment is to completely remove the cancer from your body or kill the cancer cells.

Any cancer treatment can be used as a primary treatment, but the most common primary cancer treatment for the most common cancers is surgery.

The goal of adjuvant therapy is to kill any cancer cells that may remain after primary treatment in order to reduce the chance that the cancer will recur.

Palliative treatments may help relieve side effects of treatment or signs and symptoms caused by cancer itself.

Palliative treatment can be used at the same time as other treatments intended to cure your cancer.

Your doctor can also discuss whether these therapies are safe for you or whether they may interfere with your cancer treatment.

SEER Training: Cancer Treatment

Cancer treatment involves medical procedures to destroy, modify, control, or remove primary, regional, or metastatic cancer tissue.

For cancer registrars, it is necessary to distinguish cancer-directed treatment from non-cancer directed treatment, which are recorded differently in cancer data fields.

Any treatment that is given to modify, control, remove or destroy primary or metastatic cancer tissue is cancer directed treatment.

First course of treatment includes all methods of treatment recorded in the treatment plan and administered to the patient before disease progression or recurrence.

In cancer treatment data registration, the date of the first course treatment is the month, day, and year of the first cancer-directed treatment that is administered.

This learning module provides brief discussions of the common cancer treatment approaches and how the treatment information should be used and coded by a cancer registrar.

Cancer registrars will need the SEER Program Code Manual, Third Edition and the CoC’s ROADS Manual for the definitions and standard codes to be used in the treatment data fields.

Ground Broken For First Cancer Treatment Center In Prince George’S – NBC4 Washington

Prince George’s County leaders and patients celebrated the groundbreaking of a new cancer center at the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center in Largo that will be the first of its kind in the county, bringing access to quality cancer treatment closer to home.

When Oxon Hill resident Linda Stewart was diagnosed with breast cancer, one of her first concerns was where she could go for treatment.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan joined Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks for the groundbreaking of the new cancer center.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the county.

“Right here in Prince George’s County, we’re investing $67 million to fully fund the construction of this brand new, comprehensive cancer center,” Hogan said.

As devastating as a cancer diagnosis can be, the hope is the new center will lift some of the burden.

The $67 million for the new cancer center comes from Hogan’s $200 million investment into cancer treatment and research throughout the state of Maryland.

How Is Prostate Cancer Treated?

Clinical trials use new treatment options to see if they are safe and effective.

Complementary and alternative medicine are medicines and health practices that are not standard cancer treatments.

Complementary medicine is used in addition to standard treatments, and alternative medicine is used instead of standard treatments.

Which Treatment Is Right for Me? Choosing the treatment that is right for you may be hard.

Talk to your cancer doctor about the treatment options available for your type and stage of cancer.

Your doctor can explain the risks and benefits of each treatment and their side effects.

Side effects are how your body reacts to drugs or other treatments.

Cancer: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment And Prevention

Lung cancer starts in the lung, breast cancer starts in the breast, and prostate cancer starts in the prostate.

Environmental factorsCigarette smoke: It is the leading cause of cancer and death from cancer – about one in nine cancers, and one in five cancer deaths.

Cancer symptoms vary widely and depend on where the cancer is located and how big the tumor is.

The goal of cancer treatment is to kill or destroy the cancer cells while killing as few healthy cells as possible and improve your quality of life.

Chemotherapy is a type of cancer treatment that uses drugs to kill cancer cells.

Targeted therapy is a newer type of cancer treatment that uses drugs or other substances to stop cancer from growing and spreading.

Drinking alcohol is known to increase the risk of some cancers, including breast cancer, colon cancer, mouth cancer, larynx cancer and oesophageal cancer.

Pelvic Cancer: Types, Symptoms, And Treatment Options

In this article, we are going to take a look at types of pelvic cancer and what symptoms they present with.

Pelvic cancer involves a cancer of these organs or structures within the pelvis.

The exact causes of pelvic cancer are often unknown, but many are linked with lifestyle factors, age, family history, and exposure to substances such as chemicals and asbestos.

Age is a risk factor for many pelvic cancers, and older people are more likely to get prostate, chondrosarcoma, uterine, ovarian, vaginal, penile, and rectal cancer.

Diet, smoking, obesity, and alcohol are risk factors for some pelvic cancers, such as rectal cancer, bladder cancer, ovarian cancer, kidney cancer, and penile cancer.

Although each type of pelvic cancer has different symptoms, many share the same signs.

As with most cancers, if caught early, then pelvic cancer can be effectively treated and cured, so always check symptoms with a doctor.

What Is Material Handling?

Material Handling is the process of moving goods and materials short distances within a building, factory, facility, or warehouse.

Material handling includes a wide range of different types of materials, ranging from tiny boxes to large and heavy components for manufacturing.

To conduct this process of material handling, there is a wide range of material handling equipment.

“Material handling is the movement, protection, storage and control of materials and products throughout manufacturing, warehousing, distribution, consumption, and disposal. As a process, material handling incorporates a wide range of manual, semi-automated and automated equipment and systems that support logistics and make the supply chain work.”

The role of material handling plays is significant and has become a topic of discussion, in particular amongst manufacturing companies.

Every type of product that has been manufactured or produced has been involved in a material handling sequence of some sort.

Many large manufacturing companies invest millions of dollars every year to ensure that there material handling processes and flows are up to date and efficient.

Material Handling

Material handling can be used to create time and place utility through the handling, storage, and control of waste, as distinct from manufacturing, which creates form utility by changing the shape, form, and makeup of material.

While material handling is usually required as part of every production worker’s job, over 650,000 people in the U.S. work as dedicated “Material moving machine operators” and have a median annual wage of $31,530.

These operators use material handling equipment to transport various goods in a variety of industrial settings including moving construction materials around building sites or moving goods onto ships.

Material handling is integral to the design of most production systems since the efficient flow of material between the activities of a production system is heavily dependent on the arrangement of the activities.

The high cost of using an industrial truck for material transport is due to both the labor costs of the operator and the negative impact on the performance of a production system when multiple units of material are combined into a single transfer batch in order to reduce the number of trips required for transport.

Advantages of unit loads are that more items can be handled at the same time and that it enables the use of standardized material handling equipment.

The practical size of a unit load may be limited by the equipment and aisle space available and the need for safe material handling.

You need to understand the dangers that come with manual material handling.

What is material handling?Material handling or is the process of moving or handling objects physically in the workplace.

How to avoid material and manual handling injuriesThe best way to avoid potential injuries in your workplace is to provide training.

You must provide sufficient manual and material handling training to all your employees.

Importance of material handling equipmentHaving the correct material handling equipment in your workplace lowers the chance of your staff putting themselves at risk unnecessarily.

Alongside providing material handling equipment, you could also enrol in a CCOHS material handling course to get a certificate.

What is material handling certification?Although obtaining a material handling certification isn’t a legal requirement, there’s no harm in completing a handling course.

Material Handling Equipment

Northern Tool has a wide selection of material handling equipment meant to help you easily and safely move and manage material in any environment.

Shop our carts, drum dollies, forklifts, hand trucks, hoists, lift tables, pallet trucks, loading dock equipment and much more! Our top brands like Vestil, Atlas, JET, and Roughneck will ensure you that your material is in the right hands.

Eccentric Load: Load centre of gravity does not correspond to the geometrical centre, e.g. an unevenly loaded container.

For light loads the most practical is to determine the centre of gravity by trial and error without lifting the load completely off the ground.

Adjustment shall be done in relation to valid load test and only 90% of the load test value shall be considered as safe workload. Weight of hook block, slings and attachments shall be derived from crane load chart and tables for slings.

Stability of Fork Lift Trucks Loads and Handling Fork lift trucks must only be used to lift loads within their certified capacity.

The crane must be taken out of service immediately the defect or damage is detected and not used until it has been rectified, and re-certified if necessary, or clearance to use the crane has been given in writing by the CAP. 10 LIFTING ACCESSORIES Any piece of equipment used to attach a free or contained load to a crane hook, or hoist a load by hand, or put load restraining ropes under tension is classed as a lifting accessory.

The load chain is not used to encircle the load. A load is not lifted or tilted with the tip of the chain block hook.

Containers must be loaded in accordance with a load plan drawn up to ensure that: Cargo to be loaded does not exceed the SWL of the container.

How I Learned To Stop Pipetting And Love The Robots

Before I joined Zymergen, I could do about 24 DNA preparation and replication experiments in a day using a standard pipette; I could do up to 48 experiments daily if I used a multichannel pipette and swapped my test tubes for multiwell plates.

These robots have automated pipette arms that can transfer a reagent into every well of a microtiter plate at once, and simultaneously plan out complex mappings between dozens of plates.

I was soon performing experiments at nearly 10x the scale of my previous work.

At Zymergen, our work relies on designing, building, and testing thousands of targeted genetic changes to optimize microbes.

To find the few changes that matter amongst millions of base pairs of DNA, we have to execute an enormous number of experiments.

These experiments are only possible with automation – specifically, automated liquid-handling systems.

Some liquid handlers can transfer a reagent into all wells of a microtiter plate at once, ensuring that every sample has an equal time to react.

Liquid Handling Robot

A liquid handling robot is used to automate workflows in life science laboratories.

They can range from a specialized bench-top 8-channel DNA PCR processing robot, to a customized-for-process automated liquid handling system, such as the TECAN Freedom EVO, the HighRes Biosolution’s PRIME and Janus Automated liquid handlers from PerkinElmer.

Other liquid handling systems are designed for specific experiments, e.g. the Intavis InsituPro robot for the automation of immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization on whole-mounts and slides.

An alternative category of liquid handlers mimics the operations of humans, by performing liquid transfers as humans would do.

Some liquid handling robots utilize Acoustic Liquid Handling which uses sound to move liquids without the traditional pipette or syringe.

One of the challenges in using automated liquid handlers, or liquid handling robots, is in verifying the proper function of the device.

In addition to manual quality control methods, technologies have been developed which allow for the automated monitoring of quality control of liquid handling robots.

Statistics: Private Company Incorporated: 1975 Employees: 1,700 Sales: $263 million SICs: 6794 Patent Owners & Lessors; 7372 Prepackaged Software; 7373 Computer Integrated Systems Design Company Perspectives: Information Builders develops and markets software and professional services for the creation of high-performance business information systems at large, data-intensive organizations.

Information Builders quickly created Focus, a software product that allows computer users who want to manipulate a database-names and addresses on a mailing list, for example-with little training and using standard English.

Time sharing fell out of widespread use by 1980, but leasing the original Focus, designed to run on IBM 4300 machines, to time-sharing firms was vital to Information Builders during its early years.

David Kemler, hired as the company’s first salesperson in 1977 and later becoming its sales and marketing vice-president, said that, from the start, Focus was marketed as “a 4GL front end. We were precluded from going into large shops and saying we had a database because they already had IMS [from IBM].” Nevertheless, most users purchased the Focus DBMS as an option with the 4GL, and by 1990 it was being used in 99 percent of IBI’s customer sites, according to Kemler.

The revenue stream from time-sharing licensees also enabled Information Builders to fund development of a version of Focus for the personal computer market.

Focus was ready to serve this computer when the first shipments of the machine were made in 1983, thereby enabling Information Builders to become an early power in the microcomputer business.

In 1987 Information Builders made its first acquisition, Level Five Research, Inc. Cohen believed that this Florida company would help IBI offer more decision-support products to its Focus lineup, such as problem analysis and intelligent documentation.

Atomic Emission Spectroscopy

Atomic emission spectroscopy is an analytical technique used for the quantification of metal atoms by measuring the intensity of light emitted by the atoms in excited states.

Prerequisites Atomic Absorption vs Atomic Emission Spectroscopy Principle of spectroscopy Spectroscopy: A phenomenon of spectral measurement.

Atomic emission spectroscopy, also known as ICP spectroscopy stands for inductively coupled plasma.

It is named altogether as inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy or inductive coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry.

Computers are used as readout devices in atomic emission spectroscopy.

Atomic emission spectroscopy is an analytical technique used to find the concentration of metal atoms by measuring the intensity of light emitted in their excited states.

A plasma torch is used as an ICP source in atomic emission spectroscopy which provides energy for the excitation process.

10.7: Atomic Emission Spectroscopy

Atomic emission occurs when a valence electron in a higher energy atomic orbital returns to a lower energy atomic orbital.

It is easy to adapt most flame atomic absorption spectrometers for atomic emission by turning off the hollow cathode lamp and monitoring the difference in the emission intensity when aspirating the sample and when aspirating a blank.

Many atomic emission spectrometers are dedicated instruments designed to take advantage of features unique to atomic emission, including the use of plasmas, arcs, sparks, and lasers as atomization and excitation sources, and an enhanced capability for multielemental analysis.

Because an analyte’s atomic emission spectrum has an abundance of emission lines-particularly when using a high temperature plasma source-it is inevitable that there will be some overlap between emission lines.

An analysis for Ni using the atomic emission line at 349.30 nm is complicated by the atomic emission line for Fe at 349.06 nm.

The easiest approach to selecting a wavelength is to record the sample’s emission spectrum and look for an emission line that provides an intense signal and is resolved from other emission lines.

Because the higher temperature of a plasma source gives rise to more emission lines, the accuracy of using plasma emission often is limited by stray radiation from overlapping emission lines.

Atomic Emission Spectroscopy

Atomic emission spectroscopy is a method of chemical analysis that uses the intensity of light emitted from a flame, plasma, arc, or spark at a particular wavelength to determine the quantity of an element in a sample.

Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy uses an inductively coupled plasma to produce excited atoms and ions that emit electromagnetic radiation at wavelengths characteristic of a particular element.

Inductively Coupled Plasma source of the emission consists of an induction coil and plasma.

The predominant form of sample matrix in ICP-AES today is a liquid sample: acidified water or solids digested into aqueous forms.

Liquid samples are pumped into the nebulizer and sample chamber via a peristaltic pump.

Spark or arc atomic emission spectroscopy is used for the analysis of metallic elements in solid samples.

In traditional arc spectroscopy methods, a sample of the solid was commonly ground up and destroyed during analysis.

Analyte atoms in solution are aspirated into the excitation region where they are desolvated, vaporized, and atomized by a flame, discharge, or plasma.

A variety of excitation sources are described in separate documents: – Flame – Arc / Spark – Plasma -Inductively-coupled plasma -Direct-current plasma -Microwave-induced plasma -Laser-induced plasma, Laser-induced breakdown AES based on Plasma Sources: Plasma is an electrical conducting gaseous mixture containing significant amounts of cations and electrons 1) increased atomization/excitation A+ e A 2) wider range of elements 3) simultaneous multielement analysis 4) wide dynamic range 1) ICP-OES: 1) ICP-OES: Induction coil -A typical ICP consists of three concentric quartz tubes through which streams of argon gas flow at a rate in the range from 5-20 L/min.

In the region from 1-3 cm above the top of the tube, the plasma becomes transparent.

Argon is a unique inert gas for plasma torches since it has few emission lines.

Argon flows from the two anode blocks and plasma is obtained by momentarily bringing the cathode in contact with the anodes.

No oxide formation as a result of two factors including Very high temperature Inert environment inside the plasma 2.

Easily adaptable to multichannel analysis Plasma Emission Instruments Three classes of plasma emission instruments can be presented including: 1.

Atomic Emission Spectroscopy

Full-scan emission spectra can be obtained from unknown samples to allow for elemental characterization.

Displays five of the most intense iron emission lines detected during the analysis of an alloy sample.

Provides another comparison between the two techniques as applied to the same sample; the emission intensity profiles for Zn and Fe were plotted against the depth, in microns, for GD-AES and the number of laser shots delivered at two different laser irradiances for LIBS. As can be seen, GD- AES delivered better resolution.

Fluorescence spectroscopy excites a sample with high energy photons and the sample then emits lower energy photons.

Atomic absorption spectroscopy vaporizes the sample in a flame or graphite furnace.

Intensity of the emission is proportional to the element’s concentration in the sample.

Infrared spectroscopy offers much to the textile chemist: minor sample preparation, fast analysis, small sample size, and detailed information about the different types of bonds present in the sample.

Atomic Emission Spectroscopy

Atomic Emission Spectroscopy, also known as AES Analysis and often referred to as OES, is one of the most useful analytical chemistry techniques for direct element analysis of solid metal and alloy samples.

Laboratory Testing Inc. near Philadelphia, PA performs atomic emission spectroscopy services for the analysis and identification of all common elements in the periodic table.

The spectrometers in LTI’s atomic emission spectroscopy lab can analyze all common elements in metal and alloy samples, including soft metals such as tin, lead and zinc.

AES analysis is particularly useful for elements with a low atomic number such as boron, aluminum, calcium, magnesium and phosphorous.

LTI’s atomic emission spectroscopy lab works with equipment that has a spark source to create the energetic environment.

Element analysis by Atomic Emission Spectroscopy entails comparing the emission lines from the sample to known standards to identify the element and calculate the quantity of the element.

Electrons in excited states are unstable and will eventually release energy again to return to lower energy states.

The amount of energy in any form of radiation is directly proportional to its frequency (E = hν), so the energy emitted when an electron moves to a lower energy state will have a distinct frequency and wavelength.

Calculations Involving Energy Levels of Hydrogen The energy of the electron in a hydrogen atom is given by equation (1) where n is the quantum number of the energy level (n= 1, 2, 3, …) The energy difference between two energy levels in hydrogen is given by equation (2) where nf is the final energy level of the electron and ni is the initial energy level of the electron.

The energy difference between levels (ΔE) is equal to the energy of the photon absorbed or emitted (Ephoton).

We can use equation (3) to calculate the initial energy level (ni) that the electron dropped from.

Use these wavelengths to calculate the ΔE for the transition and then the initial energy level of the electron for each transition (ni ) Remember that nf = 2 for the visible region (the Balmer series).

The ionization energy is the energy needed to remove an electron from an atom which corresponds to a raising the electron from n=1 to an orbit that has n=∞.

Definition, Types, Examples

The emission spectrum of a chemical element or chemical compound is the spectrum of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation emitted due to an atom or molecule making a transition from a high energy state to a lower energy state.

An absorption spectrum, unlike the emission spectrum, is like a photographic negative of the emission spectrum.

The study of the emission spectrum or absorption spectrum is better known as spectroscopy.

The hydrogen spectrum is an important piece of evidence showing that the electronic structure of the atom is quantized.

The hydrogen emission spectrum consists of radiations of discrete frequencies.

Since the energy levels of the atom are quantized, the spectrum will consist of wavelengths that reflect the differences in these energy levels.

The Balmer series is basically the part of the hydrogen emission spectrum which is responsible for the excitation of an electron from the second shell to any other shell.

Definition And Production

Before we discuss the emission spectrum definition, let us address the questions – what is a spectrum in chemistry and what is a spectrum in physics.

Whether it is physics or chemistry, the spectrum definition is the same – when white light is passed through a prism or any other dispersing substance, the white light splits into a series of coloured bands or lines known as a spectrum.

What is Emission Spectrum? So, what is the emission spectrum definition in physics and chemistry? An emission spectrum is the range or array of wavelengths obtained when the light emitted by a substance is passed through a prism and examined directly with a spectroscope.

Now let’s define the line emission spectrum: a spectroscope splits the emitted light into different wavelengths and gives a discontinuous spectrum in the form of discrete lines known as a line spectrum.

The emission spectra of an element is the spectrum of radiation emitted due to an atom or molecule absorbing energies and transitioning from a high energy state to a lower energy state.

The line spectrum otherwise known as the atomic spectrum is obtained by analyzing the radiation emitted by passing an electric discharge through hydrogen gas at low pressure.

Such a spectrum consisting of lines of definite frequencies is called line spectrum or discontinuous spectrum.

ScienceDirect Topics

For atoms appear as a series of lines, because electrons fall from higher energy states to lower ones and emit energy as electromagnetic radiation.

Although the discussion has concerned electronic energy levels in atoms, the electronic states in molecules are usually separated by similar energies.

In addition to electronic energy levels, molecules also have vibrational and rotational energy states.

The reason is that for H2, the absorbed energy will not only change the kinetic energies of the molecules, but it will also change their rotational energies.

If the energy of the orbit for which n = 2 is E2 and that for n = 3 is E3, then by a transition from the higher energy orbit to the lower, the energy, E = E3−E2 is emitted as electromagnetic radiation of frequency v given by Planck’s quantum condition, E = hv.

FIG. 27.2.Absorption line spectra are explained by the reverse process, namely that in which light of wavelength is regarded as consisting of quanta of energy E = hc/λ, and this absorbed energy is used in causing the transitions of electrons from lower to higher energy states, i.e. in the reverse order but between similar levels as those which result in emission.

The Rydberg-Ritz formula must be modified to account, in general, for the characteristic line spectra of atoms which are more complex than that of hydrogen but characteristic spectral lines always result from transitions from one energy state to another, the difference in energy between levels being equated to hv, where v is the frequency of the light emitted.

Emission Spectrum

The emission spectrum of a chemical element or chemical compound is the spectrum of frequencies of electromagnetic radiation emitted due to an electron making a transition from a high energy state to a lower energy state.

In physics, emission is the process by which a higher energy quantum mechanical state of a particle becomes converted to a lower one through the emission of a photon, resulting in the production of light.

For most substances, the amount of emission varies with the temperature and the spectroscopic composition of the object, leading to the appearance of color temperature and emission lines.

The principle of the atomic emission spectrum explains the varied colors in neon signs, as well as chemical flame test results.

The above picture shows the visible light emission spectrum for hydrogen.

Emission spectroscopy developed in the late 19th century and efforts in theoretical explanation of atomic emission spectra eventually led to quantum mechanics.

Emission spectroscopy is often referred to as optical emission spectroscopy because of the light nature of what is being emitted.

Know very accurately what wavelengths are being emitted by a source of light, we will use a digital spectrometer.

If you shine white light through a prism it spreads the light out into a rainbow because different wavelengths of light have slightly different indexes of refraction, called dispersion.

If you shine white light through a gaseous element and then let the light pass through a prism you see dark lines in the continuous spectrum.

Equation 10.1 can now be written as: E= hc 1240 eV nm = where is the wavelength in nm and the energy of the photon is in eV. 10.5 In today’s lab Today we’ll be investigating the spectrum of light that is emitted from various sources.

Observing light sources You will investigate 5 different light sources: a laser, a helium gas discharge tube, a mercury gas discharge tube, the overhead lighting, and an object that is not emitting its own light.

What Is An Emission Spectrum?

An emission spectrum is the electromagnetic radiation, such as visible light, a substance emits.

Hot objects produce a continuous spectrum, whereas gases can absorb energy then emit it at certain specific wavelengths, forming an emission line spectrum.

The atoms are relatively close together and as they gain energy, they move about more and bump against one another, resulting in a wide range of energies.

The energy of the EMR corresponds to the difference in energy between the electron’s higher and lower states.

A line emission spectrum appears as a series of colored lines against a dark background.

The emission spectrum of hydrogen, the simplest element, consists of a series of lines in the red, blue and violet ranges of visible light.

These involve lower energies and tend to produce emissions in the infrared part of the spectrum.

Emission Spectrum Of Hydrogen

These resonators gain energy in the form of heat from the walls of the object and lose energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation.

Absorption of a mole of photons of red light would therefore provide enough energy to raise the temperature of a liter of water by more than 40oC. The fact that hydrogen atoms emit or absorb radiation at a limited number of frequencies implies that these atoms can only absorb radiation with certain energies.

The energy levels of the hydrogen atom are quantized.

The only orbits that are allowed are those for which the angular momentum of the electron is an integral multiple of Planck’s constant divided by 2p. Light is absorbed when an electron jumps to a higher energy orbit and emitted when an electron falls into a lower energy orbit.

The energy of the light emitted or absorbed is exactly equal to the difference between the energies of the orbits.

According to the Bohr model, the wavelength of the light emitted by a hydrogen atom when the electron falls from a high energy orbit into a lower energy orbit.

Light carries energy as if it contains discrete photons or packets of energy.

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Type of mass spectrometry that uses an inductively coupled plasma to ionize the sample.

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry is a type of mass spectrometry that uses an inductively coupled plasma to ionize the sample.

What makes Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry unique to other forms of inorganic mass spectrometry is its ability to sample the analyte continuously, without interruption.

This is in contrast to other forms of inorganic mass spectrometry; Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry and Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry, that require a two-stage process: Insert sample(s) into a vacuum chamber, seal the vacuum chamber, pump down the vacuum, energize sample, thereby sending ions into the mass analyzer.

The rapid scanning, large dynamic range and large mass range is ideally suited to measuring multiple unknown concentrations and isotope ratios in samples that have had minimal preparation, for example seawater, urine, and digested whole rock samples.

The high temperature of the plasma is sufficient to cause a very large portion of the sample to form ions.

Inductively Coupled Plasma

More recently, other types of electrical discharges, namely plasmas have been used as atomization/ excitation sources for AES. These techniques include inductively coupled plasma and direct coupled plasma.

Current plasma sources provide a much easier method of handling liquid and gaseous samples.

An inductively coupled plasma can be generated by directing the energy of a radio frequency generator into a suitable gas, usually ICP argon.

The temperature within the plasma ranges from 6,000-10,000 K. A long, well-defined tail emerges from the top of the high temperature plasma on the top of the torch.

The excitation area is situated in the crook of the tripod and it has a temperature of 6,000 K. To increase the current density and thus the plasma temperature it is necessary to squeeze the plasma in order to decrease the current cross section.

Inductively coupled plasma – atomic emission spectroscopy is a type of emission spectroscopy that uses the inductively coupled plasma to produce excited atoms and ions to emit electromagnetic radiation at wavelengths characteristic of a particular element.

It has also be referred to as inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, where it is widely used in minerals processing to provide the data on grades of various ore streams for the construction of mass balances.

Liquid samples are appropriately diluted and spiked with internal standards.

Solid samples are converted to liquids by a variety of methods.

For other samples, more aggressive dissolution methods are required, including acid digestions and microwave assisted digestions.

Psychedelic Therapy: Definition, Types, Techniques, And Efficacy

Psychedelic therapy is a technique that involves the use of psychedelic substances to aid the therapeutic process.

Researchers have uncovered a number of potential applications for psychedelic therapy.

Some more recent evidence also supports the idea that psychedelic therapy holds promise as an addiction treatment.

Psychedelic therapy shows a great deal of promise in the treatment of a wide variety of mental health conditions including addiction and depression.

Psychedelic therapy’s efficacy for alcohol and substance use has not yet been clearly established, however.

In order to determine if psychedelic therapy is truly effective in the treatment of alcohol and substance use disorders, more research using randomized clinical trials is needed.

The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies and the John Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research may also sponsor research and trials that are accepting participants.

Psychedelic Therapy

Psychedelic therapy refers to the proposed use of psychedelic drugs, such as psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, and ayahuasca, to treat mental disorders.

As of 2021, psychedelic drugs are controlled substances in most countries and psychedelic therapy is not legally available outside clinical trials, with some exceptions.

As of 2022, the body of high-quality evidence on psychedelic therapy remains relatively small and more, larger studies are needed to reliably show the effectiveness and safety of psychedelic therapy’s various forms and applications.

The United States Food and Drug Administration has granted “Breakthrough therapy” status, which expedites the assessment of promising drug therapies for potential approval, to psychedelic therapies using psilocybin and MDMA. The first research centre for psychedelic drug therapy opened in Melbourne, Australia, with the goal of treating mental health disorders and other medical conditions with less side-effects.

As of 2021, many new centers for psychedelics research have been launched, including the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London, the UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics, the Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research at Johns Hopkins University, the Center for Psychedelic Research and Therapy at Dell Medical School at the University of Texas at Austin, the Center for Psychedelic Psychotherapy and Trauma Research at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and the Psychae Institute in Melbourne.

The main approach used in the contemporary resurgence of research, often simply called psychedelic therapy, involves the use of moderate-to-high doses of psychedelic drugs.

Some studies of psychedelic therapy have incorporated cognitive behavioral therapy or motivational enhancement therapy.

Psychedelic Therapy: Uses, How It’S Done, Risks, And More

Psychedelic therapy is a type of psychiatric practice that involves ingesting a psychedelic substance as part of a psychotherapeutic process.

In psychedelic therapy, the use of psychedelics is typically combined with talk therapy.

While Indigenous communities have used psychedelics in therapeutic and religious settings for centuries, psychedelic therapy is relatively new in Western clinical settings.

It’s becoming more popular with increased legalization of certain psychedelic substances, a rise in mental health conditions, and a lull in psychopharmacological research.

Ketamine is the most-studied psychedelic drug for mental health therapy.

LSD. LSD, a long lasting, potent psychedelic that’s considered to be the prototype for therapeutic psychedelics, has been shown to help with both alcohol use disorder and anxiety in people living with terminal illnesses.

There’s still a lot to learn about the potential of psychedelic therapy, but the existing research is promising, particularly for those with severe PTSD. Because of this, advocates and lobbyists are working to decriminalize some psychedelic substances to improve access and research opportunities.

Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

Microdosing refers to the ingestion of very small doses of certain psychoactive drugs, most often LSD, psilocybin, or cannabis.

Microdoses are known as “Sub-perceptual” and are typically one-tenth or even one-twentieth of a normal dose.

Though microdosing could occur in a therapeutic setting, it is typically done outside of one.

The aim of microdosing is to trigger a drug’s therapeutic benefits-such as increased creativity or improved mood-without the potentially disruptive effects seen at higher doses, such as hallucinations or dissociation.

In recent years, microdosing has gained popularity, fueled in part by its use among Silicon Valley tech workers, many of whom anecdotally report microdosing to increase productivity.

Psychedelic Therapy: Beneficial Things To Know

For psychedelic therapy with psilocybin or LSD: “Imagine your brain as a snowy hill. Each decision you make is like sledding down the hill, causing a slight indentation in the snow. The more times you make a decision, the deeper the groove, the faster you make the decision and the harder it is to try something different and escape the groove. Psychedelics is like fresh powder on the hill won’t the grooves away so you can try new ways of thinking / new routes down the hill.”

LSD therapy is promising for alcoholism, and similar benefits would be expected from psilocybin therapy.

Psychedelic therapy is also highly promising for alcoholism, opioid dependence and other kinds of addictions, including perhaps even behavioral addictions like smartphone or social media addiction.

“IMO, MDMA is much easier to handle than Tryptamines and involves less risk. This means that it’s a good starting point. If the therapy with MDMA doesn’t help in the desired way, then therapy with Tryptamines should be tried. Also, I’ve found that MDMA is very good at helping to deal with past traumas, things that you find very hard to think about while sober. Tryptamines help to deal with questions we don’t have the answers to, questions that we would like resolved to help live a less confusing life. Such as; What happens when I die? What is the purpose of life? And other existential dilemmas.”

See our page on MDMA therapy for useful info about MDMA therapy.

For therapeutic purposes, the benefits of LSD therapy vs the benefits of psilocybin therapy are likely to be extremely similar.

What To Know About Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy

Psychedelic-assisted therapy is getting a lot of attention, with Ketamine clinics popping up all over the place and a lot of buzz and hype around the use of psychedelics in mental health treatment.

Articles are being released in many large mainstream media outlets about the magic of psychedelic use in mental health.

If you are considering the use of any psychedelic medicine, whether above board or underground, talk with your therapist and care team.

There are many different psychedelic medicines and ways to use these medicines.

Using a psychedelic in a party scene or addiction is vastly different from using psychedelics in the safety of a therapy session or a clinic.

Again, the integration work in therapy after a psychedelic experience is crucial for deepening the meaningfulness.

While the rebirth of psychedelics as medicine is exciting, it is also important to be well-informed and consider safety in your curiosity about how psychedelic-assisted therapy might benefit you.

Among the notable nuclear technologies are nuclear reactors, nuclear medicine and nuclear weapons.

A nuclear weapon is an explosive device that derives its destructive force from nuclear reactions, either fission or a combination of fission and fusion.

A radiological weapon is a type of nuclear weapon designed to distribute hazardous nuclear material in enemy areas.

In 1963, all nuclear and many non-nuclear states signed the Limited Test Ban Treaty, pledging to refrain from testing nuclear weapons in the atmosphere, underwater, or in outer space.

Nuclear power is a type of nuclear technology involving the controlled use of nuclear fission to release energy for work including propulsion, heat, and the generation of electricity.

The amount of comparatively low waste that nuclear energy does create is safely disposed of by the large scale nuclear energy production facilities or it is repurposed/recycled for other energy uses.

Nuclear Technology

The energy released by the change in the nucleus of atoms is known as nuclear energy.

The changes in the nucleus of atoms is normally caused by either nuclear fusion or nuclear fission.

The technology that manipulates such changes in nucleus of some specific elements and transform into energy is known as nuclear technology.

Nuclear fuel is the element that is used in nuclear power plants to produce heat to power the turbines.

Following are the areas where Nuclear Technology is applied .

Nuclear technology is also used in different industries.

In France, nuclear energy shares about 72 percent of the total domestic energy production.

Nuclear Reactor Technologies

Nuclear power has reliably and economically contributed almost 20% of electrical generation in the United States over the past two decades.

The smaller size also makes these reactors ideal for small electric grids and for locations that cannot support large reactors, offering utilities the flexibility to scale production as demand changes.

Extending the operating lifetimes of current plants beyond 60 years and, where possible, making further improvements in their productivity will generate early benefits from research, development, and demonstration investments in nuclear power.

As a result of ARC research, nuclear energy will continue to provide clean, affordable, and secure energy while supporting the administration’s greenhouse gas reduction goals by introducing advanced designs into new energy and industrial markets.

In February 2019, the U.S. Department of Energy announced its plans to build a Versatile Test Reactor, or VTR. This new research reactor will be capable of performing irradiation testing at much higher neutron energy fluxes than what is currently available today.

For over 50 years the Department of Energy and its predecessor agencies have been deeply involved in space research and exploration.

Currently, the Office of Space and Defense Power Systems supplies Radioisotope Power Systems to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and national security applications for missions that are beyond the capabilities of fuel cells, solar power and battery power supplies.

The Many Uses Of Nuclear Technology

The applications of nuclear technology outside of civil electricity production in power plants are less well-known.

Radioisotopes, nuclear power process heat and non-stationary power reactors have essential uses across multiple sectors, including consumer products, food and agriculture, industry, medicine and scientific research, transport, and water resources and the environment.

One of the most common uses of radioisotopes today is in household smoke detectors.

In developed countries about one person in 50 uses diagnostic nuclear medicine each year, and the frequency of therapy with radioisotopes is about one-tenth of this.

The uses of radioisotopes in therapy are comparatively few, but important.

In the future, electricity or heat from nuclear power plants could be used to make hydrogen.

The University of Witwatersrand in collaboration with the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, Colorado State University, Rosatom and the Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa, is examining the possibility of injecting trace amounts of stable isotopes into the horns of rhinos, to disincentivize poaching and to increase the chances of identifying and arresting smugglers.

Nuclear Technology

Nuclear power generates loads of energy and lots of opportunity.

Did you know that nuclear power plants supply 20% of the electrical power in the U.S? And guess what – they pay well!

The average starting salary of a graduate from our Nuclear Technology program is more than $50,000.

Even though new nuclear power plants are not currently being built, the existing ones are safe working environments that’ll be running for decades, and there’s an aging workforce with not enough replacements ready to go.

Our Nuclear Technology program is one of very few in the country, so our graduates are highly sought after to work in any of the 99 nuclear power plants or reactors across the nation.

You’ll learn from instructors who have worked in the field, plus you’ll have the chance to gain real-world experience through paid internships with potential employers.

As a graduate, you’ll be prepared to earn a National Academy for Nuclear Training certificate.

Nuclear Technology

Power up your future with a degree in Nuclear Technology, which includes on-the-job training at a nuclear facility.

This program will prepare you for an entry-level position with nuclear power plant maintenance contractors or electric utilities.

The Nuclear Technology program prepares individuals to become qualified reactor field technicians who are employed by licensed nuclear reactor facilities.

The program includes on-the-job training as a co-op at a nuclear facility.

Positions with GE-Hitachi offer students the opportunity to travel to various commercial nuclear power plants to participate in refueling outages, while Duke Energy will be “In-plant” positions.

Graduates are typically employed in entry-level positions with nuclear plant maintenance contractors or electric utilities.

Other opportunities include transferring to a 4-year Bachelor of Science program and the nuclear Navy.

Applications Of Nuclear Technology

Nuclear technology has multiple applications that are fundamental to our daily life.

The best-known applications are medicine and electricity production, but there are others in such diverse fields as agriculture, industry and art.

These applications have a large presence in our day to day life, and in the future they will be even more relevant as research is increasing their possibilities of application and justifying their use.

CANDU Reactor

In October 2011, the Canadian Federal Government licensed the CANDU design to Candu Energy, which also acquired the former reactor development and marketing division of AECL at that time.

In addition to its two PHWR reactors, India has some safeguarded pressurised heavy-water reactors based on the CANDU design, and two safeguarded light-water reactors supplied by the US. Plutonium has been extracted from the spent fuel from all of these reactors; India mainly relies on an Indian designed and built military reactor called Dhruva.

Uniquely among CANDU stations, Douglas Point had an oil-filled window with a view of the east reactor face, even when the reactor was operating.

The oil used has a higher boiling point than water, allowing the reactor to operate at higher temperatures and lower pressures than a conventional reactor.

A serious problem with cracking of the reactor’s end shield led to the reactor being shut down for long periods, and the reactor was finally downrated to 100 MW. Construction of the RAPP-2 reactor was still underway when India detonated its first atomic bomb in 1974, leading to Canada ending nuclear dealings with the country.

A licensing agreement with Romania was signed in 1977, selling the CANDU 6 design for $5 million per reactor for the first four reactors, and then $2 million each for the next twelve.

In January 1975, a deal was announced for a single CANDU 6 reactor to be built in South Korea, now known as the Wolsong-1 Power Reactor.

Energy Education

CANDU reactor is a type of nuclear reactor which was developed in Canada, and is currently used in nuclear power plants for electrical generation in various countries around the world.

CANDU stands for CANada Deuterium Uranium, which reflects the key role of deuterium, or heavy water, which acts as the reactor’s neutron moderator, a unique trait of the CANDU. The reactors are also different from other reactors because they are designed to utilize natural uranium as a fuel.

The uranium-238 is fertile and can absorb high speed neutrons and convert to plutonium-239 which is fissile and then undergoes fission; this process accounts for around half of the energy produced within the reactor.

CANDU reactors use about 25 to 30% less mined uranium than a comparable light water reactor.

On-line refueling in a CANDU reactor is a unique trait that is a major advantage over other reactors such as the pressurized water reactors and boiling water reactors.

The CANDU has the ability to refuel while the reactor is still running whereas other reactors must shut down completely, lowering their capacity factor.

The reactor configuration of a CANDU differs from other typical reactors, as fuel bundles are arranged horizontally rather than vertically, and are placed inside pressure tubes within a vessel.

There is a large mass of the pressure tube inside the reactor and it can potentially absorb too many neutrons to sabotage reactor criticality.

1,3]. Although, in principle, the coolent can be anything, all operating CANDU reactors have heavy water as coolent as they wanted to maximise neutron economy for neutrons.

Advanced CANDU reactors use pressurised light water as coolent.

The core of the reactor consists of several fuel channels embedded in a large heavy water moderator tank.

One of the advantages of CANDU reactors is that fuel can be continuously changed while the reactor is in operation.

CANDU reactor gives two options for burning Thorium.

In the first option, only one fuel type is used in the reactor core which is a mixture of slightly enriched Uranium and natural thorium.

Definition & Components

The CANDU reactor design has been developed since the 1950s in Canada, and more recently also in India.

These reactors are heavy water cooled and moderated pressurized water reactors.

PHWRs generally use natural uranium oxide as fuel, hence needs a more efficient moderator, in this case heavy water.

The reactor core is in a large tank called a calandria.

There is a heavy water as the moderator in this tank.

The fuel is cooled by a flow of heavy water under high pressure in the primary cooling circuit, reaching 290°C. The moderator in the tank and the coolant in the channels are separated.

The hot coolant that leaves the channels goes to a steam generator, which in turn heats a secondary loop of water to steam that can run turbines and generator.

CANDU SMR: The Original Canadian Solution The CANDU® Small Modular Reactor is the only all-Canadian – and most mature – SMR design available today to help the Government of Canada reach its goal of Net Zero by 2050.

From fuel mining and processing to nucleargrade fabrication, component supply, tooling design and software development to nuclear construction, operations and eventually endof-life and waste management, the Canadian supply chain is robust and ready to support the development and rollout of a new CANDU SMR. Unlike any other technology, SNC-Lavalin’s new CANDU SMR will energize this made-in-Canada supply chain.

A CANDU SMR will use domestic natural uranium fuel, mined and processed by Canadian companies and readily available and licensed for use in Canada.

Finally, used fuel from the CANDU SMR is compliant with the plans underway by the Nuclear Waste Management Organization and faces no new licensing or waste challenges that have not already been solved by Canadians.

CANDU SMR Benefts > Mature Canadian supply chain ready to go for a new CANDU Proven CANDU technology, competitive economics > CNSC very familiar with CANDU technology The supply chain has adapted over 50 years of nuclear know-how from more than 30 CANDU reactors currently operating around the world, including an advanced reactor core design, a signature online refuelling capability, and a holistic plant design that incorporates decades of operating and maintenance experience and low unit electrical costs.

The last seven CANDU reactors have been built on budget and on or ahead of schedule Advanced safety features that go above and beyond > Canadian Nuclear Laboratories can support the technology, allowing for a boost in their platform > Canada’s nuclear waste program is already geared for CANDU operations.

3.2 Global Navigation Satellite SystemsMore popularly known as satnav or satellite navigation.

The BeiDou satellite positioning system consists of two geostationary satellites, one on-orbit satellite as backup, one central control system, one calibration system, and various types of user machines.

First, the central control system sends out an interrogation signal to Satellite I, Satellite II, and the BeiDou satellite navigation and positioning system simultaneously, and broadcasts it to users in the service area via the satellite transponder.

Since the positions of the central control system and the two satellites are known, based on the above two delays it is possible to calculate the distance from the user to the first satellite as well as the sum of distances between the user and the two satellites, and therefore, it is determined that the user is on the intersecting line between a sphere with the first satellite as the spherical center and an ellipsoid with the two satellites as focal points.

A satellite navigation framework with worldwide coverage might be named a Global Navigation Satellite System and is shown in Fig.

Global Positioning System developed by the Department of Defense of the United States, Russia’s GLONASS launched by the European GNSS Agency of the European Union, and China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System are completely operational GNSS. The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service was developed by the European Space Agency, and the Wide Area Augmentation System is an air navigation aid developed by the Federal Aviation Administration [38.,39.]. Satellite Navigation: What Is GNSS

The GNSS is a satellite navigation system that provides global coverage of geospatial positioning.

The satellite navigation systems of different countries operate under GNSS. GPS has now become so popular that people mistake every satellite system with GPS, but that is far from the case, as the list below shows!

Global Positioning System, popularly known as GPS, is a satellite navigation system of the USA. GPS has been operational since 1978 and provides users with positioning, navigation and timing services.

Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System, popularly known as NavIc, is an independent regional navigation satellite system developed by India.

The messages sent by the satellite are in the Receiver Independent Exchange Format, which is a data interchange format for raw satellite navigation systems.

Can you tell which satellite navigation system the above navigation messages belong to? If not, don’t worry, we’ll decode it together.

These signals are then received by the satellite and, through the use of satellite imagery, the satellite sends a navigation message to the user’s device in an encrypted format.

Dewatering Techniques For Construction Projects

Dewatering and construction dewatering are terms used to describe the action of removing groundwater or surface water from a construction site.

Construction dewatering is used on most construction sites due to accumulated water in trenches and excavations or in places with an inadequate slope or high water table.

There are multiple dewatering products that can be used to remove sediment from the pumped water, such as dewatering bags.

You should avoid dewatering under heavy rains because the infiltration rate is at a minimum and water will move slower or just the dewatering process will not function.

Dewatering bags are made of durable geotextile fabric used to filter water by removing sediments.

Other feasible ways for dewatering are water pumping, siphoning, or using large construction machinery buckets to scoop and dump water from the selected area.

Earth channels used for dewatering could also be protected with ditch linings, and additional protection should be placed to reduce water velocities and minimize erosion.

What Is Dewatering, When Is It Used, And Methods

Dewatering represents the process of removing water from soil or solid material by using filtration, centrifugation wet classification or other separation processes.

Usually, dewatering is a technique implemented on most construction sites because it helps retrieve water accumulated in trenches.

If the area where you discharge the water shows signs of erosion or instability, you need to discontinue dewatering.

One of the most common dewatering methods is using dewatering bags.

Usually, dewatering bags are used on construction sites, dredging operations or areas with high water table near the shoreline.

If you only need a dewatering system for a limited time, you could as well rent some dewatering pumps, wellpoint pumps or trash pumps from specialized companies.

You can use several dewatering methods, and you need to appropriately discard the excess water.

Dewatering

Mines and quarries that introduce water into their operations will at some point require that moisture to be removed, either for further processing of the material or product handling.

Dewatering is a process that separates liquid-solid mixtures, such as slurries comprised of particles and process water, that are present in aggregate, minerals, coal and frac sand wet processing applications.

Dewatering most often occurs through processes such as wet classification, centrifugation, filtration or similar liquid-solid separation processes.

McLanahan offers a broad range of dewatering equipment that uses these methods to process sands, coal, pulp and paper, concrete and other minerals and materials in the mining industry, as well as for dewatering stall bedding in the dairy industry.

What Is Dewatering?

Working with a groundwater control specialist is essential when designing a pump system for site dewatering.

Improperly designed solutions can result in unwanted subsidence, erosion, or flooding.

Professional engineers evaluate local hydrogeology and site conditions to engineer the most effective systems.

What Is Dewatering? 9 Most Used Methods Of Dewatering

Due to the accumulation of water in the trenches and foundation pits, most construction sites need to be dewatering.

Dewatering is the process of removing groundwater and surface water from a construction site.

The second objective of dewatering is to avoid excavation instability caused by groundwater by controlling the pore water pressure and the effective stress around the excavation.

Most excavations require some form of dewatering or the extraction of water from the excavation or the surrounding soil.

The most common method of dewatering is to remove the water by pumping the water that has accumulated in the pits in the low points of the foundation pit.

The only difference is that high-pressure water is used in the riser unit instead of a vacuum to pump water from the wellhead. This method uses the Venturi tube principle.

A deep well dewatering system can pump more than 3000 gallons of water per minute.

Dewatering

Construction dewatering, unwatering, or water control are common terms used to describe removal or draining groundwater or surface water from a riverbed, construction site, caisson, or mine shaft, by pumping or evaporation.

On a construction site, this dewatering may be implemented before subsurface excavation for foundations, shoring, or cellar space to lower the water table.

As water is pumped from a deep well, a hydraulic gradient is formed and water flows into the well forming a cone of depression around the well in which there is little or no water remaining in the pore spaces of the surrounding soil.

Several equations can be used to design deep well dewatering systems, however many of these are based on empirical data and occasionally fail.

Wellpoints are small-diameter tubes with slots near the bottom that are inserted into the ground from which water is drawn by a vacuum generated by a dewatering pump.

The water trickling between the deep wells may be collected by a single row of well point at the toe.

Instead, a vacuum-assisted dewatering scheme, such as ejector wells, or vacuum-sealed deep wells may serve to draw water into a well for abstraction.

Dewatering: Important, Methods Of Dewatering In Construction

Dewatering is the removal of water from solid material or soil by wet classification, centrifugation, filtration, or similar solid-liquid separation processes, such as removal of residual liquid from a filter cake by a filter press as part of various industrial processes.

The term dewatering is used to control groundwater through pumping at construction sites known as construction dining and also used at mine sites known as mine catering.

The process of dewatering is used for the foundation trenches ground of the high water table, water-logging area.

The excavations are carried out by dewatering the sub-soil water and water must be pumped into an area filled with water for which the foundation is to be excavated.

Dewatering provides a dry digging and allows the construction to proceed efficiently.

If there is more than 6 meters of dewatering excavation below the water table, a multistage well system is preferably adopted.

Importance of Dewatering: Ground Excavation: It plays an important role in the excavation of the ground, subsurface excavation can be endangered due to the level of the water table.

JD Elevates Xu Lei To CEO As Liu Steps Down

BEIJING: Billionaire Liu Qiangdong, founder of Chinese e-commerce giant JD, stepped down as its chief executive officer on Thursday and handed over the baton to Xu Lei, president of JD. Industry experts said the change in executive leadership at JD will further improve the company’s organisational structure and ensure its sustainable development amid mounting competition from local rivals.

Liu will remain as chairman of the board and continue to focus on guiding the company’s long-term strategies, mentoring younger management and contributing to issues concerning the revitalization of rural areas, JD said in a statement.

Last September, Xu was promoted to president of JD and was in charge of the operations and collaborative development of various business units of the company.

Prior to that, Xu held various leadership roles in the company, including that of CEO of JD Retail, chief marketing officer of JD, head of JD Wireless, and head of the marketing department.

“Xu is highly regarded both inside and outside the company, and has been instrumental in both driving JD’s consistently stellar business performance and formulating strategic decisions,” said Liu in a statement welcoming his successor.

According to JD’s annual report released in April 2021, Liu has a 13.9 per cent stake in the company but holds 76.9 per cent of the voting rights.

A bone density test determines the bone mineral density.

Positive T-scores indicate the bone is stronger than normal; negative T-scores indicate the bone is weaker than normal.

In general, the risk for bone fracture doubles with every SD below normal.

Severe osteoporosis is defined as having a bone density that is more than 2.5 SD below the young adult mean with one or more past fractures due to osteoporosis.

In addition to bone densitometry testing, your healthcare provider may recommend other types of tests, such as blood tests, which may be used to find the presence of kidney disease, evaluate the function of the parathyroid gland, evaluate the effects of cortisone therapy, and/or assess the levels of minerals in the body related to bone strength, such as calcium.

A bone density test is mainly done to look for osteoporosis and osteopenia so that these problems can be treated as soon as possible.

The complications of broken bones related to osteoporosis are often severe, particularly in the elderly.

DXA is the most widely used imaging device in pediatric bone health research, as it is safe for use with children and adolescents and precisely measures BMC, bone area, and aBMD at clinically relevant sites such as the proximal femur and lumbar spine.

Due to its planar nature and inability to account for bone depth, DXA measures of bone mass are highly influenced by body size.

Standard outcomes for which reference data have been acquired in children and young adults [12,13] include total bone cross-sectional area, cortical thickness, and cortical and trabecular BMD. Estimates of bone strength such as the polar strength strain index are derived using measures of bone area and BMD. Although pQCT offers several advantages over DXA, it is not without its limitations.

Finally, due to limited resolution pQCT is unable to assess cortical and trabecular bone microstructure, which are important determinants of bone strength [17,18].

An important question that has yet to be addressed is whether measures of bone microstructure at peripheral regions of interest represent bone microstructure at clinically relevant sites such as the proximal femur and lumbar spine.

Bone Densitometry Scan For Osteoporosis & Osteopenia

Bone densitometry is a test like an X-ray that quickly and accurately measures the density of bone.

If you think you may be pregnant, notify your doctor before getting a bone densitometry scan.

Do not take calcium supplements or drugs that contain calcium, such as Tums, for 24 hours before your bone densitometry test.

Do not bring valuables such as jewelry or credit cards to your appointment for a bone densitometry scan.

For a bone densitometry scan, you will lie on your back, on a padded table, in a comfortable position.

Generally, you can resume usual activities immediately after your bone scan.

The results of the scan should be available to your doctor within 24 hours after the test.

Bone Density Scan

Bone density scanning, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry or bone densitometry, is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss.

Most of the devices used for DXA are central devices, which are used to measure bone density in the hip and spine.

In the central DXA examination, which measures bone density of the hip and spine, the patient lies on a padded table.

The DXA bone density test is usually completed within 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the equipment used and the parts of the body being examined.

T score – This number shows the amount of bone you have compared with a young adult of the same gender with peak bone mass.

DXA bone density testing is currently the best standardized method available to diagnose osteoporosis and is also considered an accurate estimator of fracture risk.

What are the limitations of a bone density scan? A DXA test cannot predict who will experience a fracture but can provide a relative risk and it is used to determine whether treatment is required.

Densitometry

Densitometry is the quantitative measurement of optical density in light-sensitive materials, such as photographic paper or photographic film, due to exposure to light.

Optical density is a result of the darkness of a developed picture and can be expressed absolutely as the number of dark spots in a given area, but usually it is a relative value, expressed in a scale.

Since density is usually measured by the decrease in the amount of light which shines through a transparent film, it is also called absorptiometry, the measure of light absorption through the medium.

The decadic logarithm of the reciprocal of the transmittance is called the absorbance or density.

The difference between the two is the density range.

The density range is related to the exposure range, which is the range of light intensity that is represented by the recording, via the Hurter-Driffield curve.

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry is used in medicine to evaluate calcium bone density, which is altered in several diseases such as osteopenia and osteoporosis.

The thicker the ink film, the more light the ink absorbs and the darker the ink seems.

Density Readings of Inks To measure the reflection density of process inks, it is necessary to use a complementary filter in the optical path of the densitometer.

The filters used to read process colors are: a red filter for cyan ink, green for magenta ink and blue for yellow ink.

The usual densitometric targets in a colorbar are: Solid Ink Density, Dot Area/Gain of the quarter, half and three-quarter tints, Contrast and the Trapping of ink overprints.

Absolute density is the measured density of the ink sample including the substrate, while relative density is the density of the ink sample minus the density of the substrate or base.

The ink, paper and press characteristics influence the choice of target solid ink densities.

Its value depends on the combination D op = Density of 2 / c overprint of paper, ink and screen ruling that D1 = Density of first ink is used.

What Does Densitometry Mean?

Measuring the optical density of a substance by shining light on it and measuring its transmission.

Value engineering is the process of redesigning packaging from the ground up with the aim of saving money – and believe it or not, most money can be saved by using less packaging.

Packhelp’s team of packaging engineers scrutinise over your current packaging options and ensure that your solution is designed to use the least amount of material as possible.

Using two packaging products and the use of colour to distinguish their products from each other, Hemp Juice has used recycled and recyclable cardboard to implement packaging that leaves the smallest carbon footprint possible.

Once you’ve settled on a packaging option, it’s important to calculate if you can absorb the cost of packaging or whether you need to increase prices accordingly.

Before using your new packaging design, make sure that you’ve used up all your old packaging first.

Sustainable Packaging

Packaging materials are some of the most ubiquitous and easily recognizable items people use in our daily lives.

Packaging includes plastic bottles, metal cans, food wrappings, corrugated cardboard boxes and many more materials.

Understanding the production and disposal of these materials is crucial in making economic and environmentally conscious decisions.

How does sustainable packaging relate to Sustainable Materials Management?

By applying sustainable materials management principles to this sector, the US can reduce environmental impacts while recovering potentially lost economic revenue.

Encouraging the shift in packaging construction towards more lightweight or efficient materials helps companies save money while decreasing the amount of waste generated when the packaging is discarded.

Also important is the recovery of the packaging discards; not only is there high commodity value in these items, but recycling keeps these goods out of landfills.

What Is Sustainable Packaging? Why Is It Crucial For Consumers?

If you own, operate, or manage a business that sells packaged products, you need to invest in sustainable packaging strategies.

Put simply, sustainable packaging involves the production and use of packaging that makes the most of its materials, offering maximum value for minimal energy expenditure and landfill impact.

They also involve the creation of what’s known as a circular economy – a packaging cycle in which the used, discarded packaging gets reprocessed into fresh “New” packaging on a regular basis.

One study found that 62 percent of consumers prefer to buy from brands that use sustainable packaging.

Since we’ve established that many consumers like and prefer sustainable packaging, you can make your commitment to sustainability clear by promoting your use of this form of packaging in your brand’s marketing.

To get the most consistent results, you need to build a relationship with a packaging company that specializes in sustainable materials and methods.

Now that we’ve mentioned the benefits of going with sustainable packaging and partnering with a trusted supplier, all that’s left is to choose Copious Bags for your packaging needs.

Stable Isotope Facility

The stable isotope concentrations of a molecular compound or material are presented in ratio form as the molar ratio of the heavy-to-light isotopes.

Where δX is the delta value of the sample for element X in parts per thousand and R is the molar ratio of the heavy to light isotope in the sample and in an international standard, respectively.

Organic and inorganic standard materials are obtained from the International Atomic Energy Agency and the National Institute of Standards and Technology to ensure accurate measurement and reporting of isotope ratios for unknown samples and to facilitate cross-lab comparability.

Stable Isotope Ratios As Biomarkers Of Diet For Health Research

Relative differences can be measured more precisely than absolute values; therefore, measurements of sample SIRs are always made in tandem with measurements of reference gas, and SIRs are reported in units of relative abundance rather than as absolute isotope ratios.

A final point is that corn can also contribute to the diet and thus it will be important to test biomarkers of sugar intake based on δ13C values in populations where corn intake is high and in populations where it is low.

Proof-of-concept studiesAmong the earliest studies to examine isotope variations in the modern human diet were those by Schoeller and colleagues, who noted that intake of sugars caused a marked increase in the baseline δ13C value of breath CO2.

These early studies of the modern human diet are particularly impressive in light of the fact that automated CF-IRMS measurements of δ13C and δ15N were not yet available at that time; therefore, the “Library” of stable isotope values from human foods and tissues they provide represents a major analytical effort.

Differences in SIRs among foods from Brazil, Germany, the United States and Japan highlight the importance of validating isotopic biomarkers of diet in the country in which they will be used, due to differences in geography, food sourcing, and agriculture that can effect SIRs.The consistent difference in δ15N values between foods deriving from plants and animals suggested that δ15N values in human tissues could differentiate individuals on the basis of animal protein intake.

We validated the δ15N value as a biomarker of fish and marine mammal intake against an independent biomarker of marine food intake, RBC ω-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, in a sex-, age-, and community- stratified sample of 497 Yup’ik adults from the Center for Alaska Native Health Research study.

Stable Isotope Ratios As Biomarkers Of Diet For Health Research

Diet is a leading modifiable risk factor for chronic disease, but it remains difficult to measure accurately due to the error and bias inherent in self-reported methods of diet assessment.

There is a pressing need for more objective biomarkers of diet for use in health research.

The stable isotope ratios of light elements are a promising set of candidate biomarkers because they vary naturally and reproducibly among foods, and those variations are captured in molecules and tissues with high fidelity.

Recent studies have identified valid isotopic measures of short- and long-term sugar intake, meat intake, and fish intake in specific populations.

These studies provide a strong foundation for validating stable isotopic biomarkers in the general US population.

Approaches to improve specificity for specific foods are needed; for example, by modeling intake using multiple stable isotope ratios or by isolating and measuring specific molecules linked to foods of interest.

Stable Carbon

Stable carbon isotope compositions are expressed in parts per thousand (‰) as d13C. They are determined by measuring the relative amounts of 13C and 12C in a sample and expressing this ratio relative to the stable isotope composition of Pee Dee Belemnite, a calcareous Cretaceous fossil found in Pee Dee, South Carolina, the 13C/12C ratio of which is generally accepted to be 0.0112372.

Where R= 13C/12C. Samples with greater amounts of 13C have more positive d13C values and are referred to as isotopically enriched.

D13C values can be measured for anything that contains carbon.

For biomass, the d13C values are almost always more negative than air carbon dioxide and ocean inorganic carbon.

Most organic materials contain less 13C than PDB, yielding negative values for d13C For example, most C3 plants have d13C ratios near -25 parts per mil, whereas d13C ratios in C4 plants are in the range of -10 to -12.5 parts per mil.

Herbivores are less selective against the heavier isotopes, and their bone collagen is enriched by 5 parts per mil in relation to their diet.

Marine plants are similar to C3 plants, but they obtain their carbon from dissolved oceanic bicarbonates that differ from the atmosphere in their isotope ratios, and this difference is passed up the marine food chain.

Stable Isotope Ratio

The relative abundance of such stable isotopes can be measured experimentally, yielding an isotope ratio that can be used as a research tool.

Measurement of the ratios of naturally occurring stable isotopes plays an important role in isotope geochemistry, but stable isotopes are also finding uses in ecological and biological studies.

These isotope systems for lighter elements that exhibit more than one primordial isotope for each element have been under investigation for many years in order to study processes of isotope fractionation in natural systems.

Recent advances in isotope ratio mass spectrometry now enable the measurement of isotope ratios in heavier stable elements, such as iron, copper, zinc, molybdenum, etc.

In food science, stable isotope ratio analysis has been used to determine the composition of beer, shoyu sauce and dog food.

Isotope dilution involves adding enriched stable isotope to a substance in order to quantify the amount of that substance by measuring the resulting isotope ratios.

Some applications of isotope labeling rely on the measurement of stable isotope ratios to accomplish this.

In effect, the δ18O value of a substance is the difference in parts per thousand between its 18 O/16O ratio and that of the relevant standard.

What are its δ18O and δD values? A sample of coral has a 18O value relative to the SMOW standard of 26‰.

Add the δ18O value of PDB calcite relative to SMOW to the δ18O value of the coral relative to PDB. How close is the result to δ18Ocoral-SMOW ? Isotopic fractionation between substances at equilibrium.

Compare the value of 1000 ln αqtz-mt at each temperature to the difference between the values of the two minerals.

At any given temperature, the difference in δ18O values between pyroxene and quartz will be ~1/3 as large as the difference in δ18O values of magnetite and quartz.

What 18OSMOW value would be measured on the magnetite ? If the δ18OSMOW value of the quartz were +15‰, what would the δ18OSMOW value of the magnetite be ? O isotopic analyses of minerals from the granitic host rock of a porphyry copper deposit give δ18OSMOW values of +11.1‰ for quartz and +7.0‰ for magnetite.

Did feldspar crystallise in equilibrium with quartz and magnetite ? The granite is cross-cut by quartz-feldspar veins in which δ18Oqtz-SMOW = 4.1‰ δ18Oalbite-SMOW = 2.25‰ What temperature did the quartz-feldspar veins form at ? Did they form during the high-temperature crystallisation of the granite ? The bulk δ18O value of the granite must lie somewhere between the δ18O value of its magnetite and the δ18O value of its quartz.

Isotope Geochemistry

For a more detailed discussion of the fundamentals, see the chapter “Fundamentals of Isotope Geochemistry” by Kendall and Caldwell or the chapter “Environmental Isotopes” by Clark and Fritz.

A positive d value means that the sample contains more of the heavy isotope than the standard; a negative d value means that the sample contains less of the heavy isotope than the standard.

Many isotopers are very sensitive about misuses of isotope terminology.

Two different types of processes – equilibrium and kinetic isotope effects – cause isotope fractionation.

During equilibrium reactions, the heavier isotope generally becomes enriched in the species or compound with the higher energy state.

Kinetic isotope fractionations occur in systems out of isotopic equilibrium where forward and backward reaction rates are not identical.

Many reactions can take place either under purely equilibrium conditions or be affected by an additional kinetic isotope fractionation.
