Approximately 85% of the flue gas desulfurization units installed in the US are wet scrubbers, 12% are spray dry systems, and 3% are dry injection systems.

The newer designs for dry scrubbers are capable of achieving efficiencies in the order of 90%. In spray drying and dry injection systems, the flue gas must first be cooled to about 10-20 °C above adiabatic saturation to avoid wet solids deposition on downstream equipment and plugging of baghouses.

FGD processes vary depending on the amount of SO2 involved, the solution being used to absorb the SO2, and the particular equipment used in the absorption tower.

The Flue Gas Desulfurization Process: Staying ELG-Compliant

In the U.S., ELG rules regulate wastewater discharges from coal-fired power plants and IGCC power plant wastewaters utilized in flue gas air pollution control systems or solid waste handling systems.

The FGS sludge dewatering process results in formation of large volumes of dry filter cake for proper disposal in a landfill.
