Steam Turbine
A turbine composed of moving nozzles alternating with fixed nozzles is called a reaction turbine or Parsons turbine.
An ideal steam turbine is considered to be an isentropic process, or constant entropy process, in which the entropy of the steam entering the turbine is equal to the entropy of the steam leaving the turbine.
When warming up a steam turbine for use, the main steam stop valves have a bypass line to allow superheated steam to slowly bypass the valve and proceed to heat up the lines in the system along with the steam turbine.
After first rotating the turbine by the turning gear, allowing time for the rotor to assume a straight plane, then the turning gear is disengaged and steam is admitted to the turbine, first to the astern blades then to the ahead blades slowly rotating the turbine at 10-15 RPM to slowly warm the turbine.
Steam’s starting pressure and temperature is the same for both the actual and the ideal turbines, but at turbine exit, steam’s energy content for the actual turbine is greater than that for the ideal turbine because of irreversibility in the actual turbine.
The first turbine was called the high pressure turbine, the last turbine was the low pressure turbine, and any turbine in between was an intermediate pressure turbine.
A steam turbine locomotive engine is a steam locomotive driven by a steam turbine.
Description And Characteristics
The most important turbine elements are the turbine blades.
In steam turbines, the steam expands through the fixed blade, where the pressure potential energy is converted to kinetic energy.
The rotor blades are usually designed like an impulse blade at the rot and like a reaction blade at the tip.
For gas turbines, the turbine blades are often the limiting component.
High content of water droplets can cause the rapid impingement and erosion of the blades which occurs when condensed water is blasted onto the blades.
The root is a constructional feature of turbine blades, which fixes the blade into the turbine rotor.
The shroud reduces the vibration of the blade which can be induced by the flowing of high pressure steam through the blades.

How Steam Energy Works
A steam turbine generator works by heating water to extremely high temperatures until it is converted into steam, then the steam energy is used to rotate the blades of a turbine to create mechanical or rotational energy.
This rotational energy caused by the high pressured steam turbine is used to generate electricity from an attached generator.
In the diagram below we see a simplified example of how a steam energy turbine works.
The boiler, which contains water, uses the heat energy to convert the water into high pressure steam.
If the system uses solar energy for the heat conversion, then an exhaust pipe is not needed because the solar energy system will not release any pollutants.
The steam from the water in the boiler is pumped into the steam turbine.
The remaining water that is cooled back into a liquid state is pumped back into the boiler and repeats the process again, creating more energy from steam.

A Steam Turbine is an engine that converts heat energy from pressurized steam into mechanical energy where the steam is expanded in the turbine in multiple stages to generate the required work.
In the reaction steam turbine, a jet of steam flows from a nozzle on the rotor by fixed blades designed to expand the steam.

Introduction To Web Accessibility
Accessibility is essential for developers and organizations that want to create high-quality websites and web tools, and not exclude people from using their products and services.
Web accessibility means that websites, tools, and technologies are designed and developed so that people with disabilities can use them.
For a 7-minute video with examples of how accessibility is essential for people with disabilities and useful for everyone in a variety of situations, see: Web Accessibility Perspectives Video.
Web accessibility depends on several components working together, including web technologies, web browsers and other “User agents”, authoring tools, and websites.
The W3C Web Accessibility Initiative develops technical specifications, guidelines, techniques, and supporting resources that describe accessibility solutions.

The “De-facto” standard is the WCAG v2.1 Level AA published in June, 2018 by the W3C, but it is important to remember that this standard has not been adopted as officially complying with the ADA. To help comply with this standard it is recommended to test your website through a series of web accessibility audits and then focusing on fixing any possible errors.
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, often abbreviated as WCAG, are a series of guidelines for improving web accessibility.
Web Accessibility: What Is It And Why Is It Important?
When defining web accessibility, the World Wide Web Consortium has written that “Web accessibility means that websites, tools, and technologies are designed and developed so that people with disabilities can use them”.
As Web accessibility experts Level Level argues that “Everyone benefits from improved web accessibility.”
Accessibility encompasses a broad range of issues that affect access to the web – from disabilities, including temporary disabilities, to situational limitations, and issues with technology or the internet.
If the ethical standpoint isn’t enough to win you over on the importance of web accessibility, then the business case for accessibility may help.
W3C has produced Web Content Accessibility Guidelines which are internationally recognized guidelines for improving web accessibility.
Gravity Forms is fully committed to accessibility and making the web accessible to everyone.
With Gravity Forms 2.5, you will find accessibility changes across the board, turning our form builder into an accessibility tool that can be used to create forms that achieve WCAG 2.1 AA compliance.
What Is Accessibility?
This article starts the module off with a good look at what accessibility is – this overview includes what groups of people we need to consider and why, what tools different people use to interact with the web, and how we can make accessibility part of our web development workflow.
Websites must conform with the W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, including cognitive accessibility guidelines.
The W3C’s Cognitive and Learning Disabilities Accessibility Task Force produces web accessibility guidelines for people with cognitive impairments.
A common accessibility myth is that accessibility is an expensive “Added extra” to implement on a project.
You are trying to “Retrofit” accessibility onto an existing website that has significant accessibility issues.
So while the WCAG is a set of guidelines, your country will probably have laws governing web accessibility, or at least the accessibility of services available to the public It is a good idea to find out what your laws are.
Where the native semantic information provided by the HTML elements in your web apps falls down, you can supplement it with features from the WAI-ARIA specification, which add semantic information to the accessibility tree to improve accessibility.
Why Web Accessibility Is Important
Faculty, staff, and students are often unsure of what we mean when we speak of web accessibility.
Web accessibility is an issue that is relevant to all people, not just for those with a disability.
To be most effective, web accessibility must be addressed proactively, and involves educating oneself about accessibility, creating accessible content, and making that content readily available to all online users.
The following three videos from W3C Web Accessibility Initiative puts web accessibility into perspective, addressing why it is both essential and useful.
Web accessibility works to inclusively enable access to a website by all users, regardless of the user’s level of ability, condition, or circumstances.
Violating these laws can result in a loss of funding, as some universities have faced legal action for web accessibility non-compliance.
The University of Washington has developed thorough summaries of several higher education resolution agreements and lawsuits involving web accessibility.

The part that affects the way business communicates with customers online is called “Title III”, therefore often when web accessibility is discussed, it’s being referred to as ADA Title III. ADA Title III is not a set of standards, it’s US-based legislation, enforcing private websites to comply with the WCAG 2.1 Accessibility Guidelines.
You can use a web accessibility checker to ensure your website is compliant.
Among other topics, the AODA clearly defines the need for website accessibility compliance, like most web accessibility legislation, based on W3C’s WCAG 2.0 Guidelines.

Pilot Experiment
A pilot study, pilot project, pilot test, or pilot experiment is a small-scale preliminary study conducted to evaluate feasibility, duration, cost, adverse events, and improve upon the study design prior to performance of a full-scale research project.
A pilot study is used to formulate the design of the full-scale experiment which then can be adjusted.
The pilot study is potentially a critical insight to clinical trial design, recruitment and sample size of participants, treatment testing, and statistical analysis to improve the power of testing the hypothesis of the study.
Analysis from the pilot experiment can be added to the full-scale experiment to improve the chances of a clear outcome.
Extrapolation from a pilot study to large scale strategy may not be assumed as possible, partly due to the exceptional resources and favorable conditions that accompany a pilot study.
In clinical research, studies conducted in preparation for a future randomized controlled trial are known as “Pilot” and “Feasibility” studies, where pilot studies are a subset of feasibility studies.
A pilot study asks the same questions, but also has a specific design feature: in a pilot study, a future study is conducted on a smaller scale, which, if having produced positive results, may lead to a Phase I clinical trial.
Pilot Experiments
My model said, irrespective of the size or rate of growth of the fires, they should be fought in order of their age, younger fires before older ones.
Fire A should be set H hous after fire B, so fire A is the yougest fire.
My hypothesis was that in the 16 conditions in which fire A, the youngest fire, was fought first, the time to contain both fires would be less than in the other 16 conditions.
It was clear before I ran the experiment that the time required to fight the fires would vary considerably across the conditions; for example, a pair of large, fast-growing fires would take longer to contain than one large and one small, slow-growing fire.
In particular, I had no idea how to set the parameter H, the age difference between the fires, although my model said that the advantage of the youngest-first strategy ought to be proportional to H. Because the models we test in experiments are incomplete or imprecise, we often do not know how to set the values of independent variables to best see effects on dependent variables.
How slow should “slow growth” be? How large is a “large” fire?
Or pieces of code that implement the experimental procedure can be buggy; for example, because fires are reported by watchtowers, which sometimes fail, I found in a pilot experiment that roughly half of my “youngest fire first” trials actually fought the oldest fire first!

Definition Of Pilot By Medical Dictionary
The two main types are prospective studies and retrospective studies.
It contrasts with a cross-sectional s. pilot study a smaller version of a proposed research study, conducted to refine the methodology of the later one.
Prospective study an epidemiologic study in which the groups of individuals are selected on the bases of factors that are to be examined for possible effects on some outcome.
Retrospective study an epidemiologic study in which participating individuals are classified as either having some outcome or lacking it; the outcome may be a specific disease, and the persons’ histories are examined for specific factors that might be associated with that outcome.
As compared to prospective studies, retrospective studies suffer from drawbacks: certain important statistics cannot be measured, and large biases may be introduced both in the selection of controls and in the recall of past exposure to risk factors.
The advantage of the retrospective study is its small scale, usually short time for completion, and its applicability to rare diseases, which would require study of very large cohorts in prospective studies.

Warner Bros Discovery Merger Has Officially Concluded
Has officially come to a close and the combined company will be known as Warner Bros.
It has been announced that the deal is now officially closed and Warner Bros.
WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar is exiting the newly combined company, and Discovery CEO David Zaslav will be running the combined operations going forward.
Toby Emmerich, Casey Bloys and Channing Dungey, heads of Warner Bros Pictures, HBO and Warner Bros TV, respectively, have gotten votes of confidence to retain their positions.
This new deal makes for a gigantic media entity between the two former companies.
Discovery includes Discovery Plus, Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, Travel Channel, Turbo/Velocity, Animal Planet, Science Channel, and OWN. The new company will begin trading on the stock exchange on Monday under the ticker symbol WBD. With HBO Max and Discovery Plus both existing as streaming services, a consolidation of the two services is inevitable, but won’t happen immediately.
Town hall meetings are scheduled for next week for details of new initiatives to be shared with all of the company’s divisions.
Warner Bros Discovery Merger Closes
UPDATED REPORT: The $43bn merger between WarnerMedia and Discovery has closed, resulting in entertainment giant Warner Bros Discovery which begins trading on the Nasdaq on Monday.
“With our collective assets and diversified business model, Warner Bros. Discovery offers the most differentiated and complete portfolio of content across film, television and streaming. We are confident that we can bring more choice to consumers around the globe while fostering creativity and creating value for shareholders. I can’t wait for both teams to come together to make Warner Bros. Discovery the best place for impactful storytelling.”
In addition to their new shares of Warner Bros Discovery common stock, AT&T shareholders continue to hold the same number of shares of AT&T common stock they held immediately prior to close.
ORIGINAL REPORT: David Zaslav has unveiled several members of his key executive suite, fuelling speculation that the $43bn Warner Bros Discovery merger will conclude very soon, possibly by tomorrow.
According to reports Warner Bros Pictures chairman Toby Emmerich is staying and will report directly to Zaslav, as will HBO/HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys, and Warner Bros TV Group head Channing Dungey.
Key Discovery executives include Bruce Campbell, the chief development, distribution and legal officer who becomes Discovery Warner Bros chief revenue and strategy officer.
Discovery president and CEO of streaming and international JB Perrette becomes CEO and president of Warner Bros Discovery Global Streaming and Interactive Entertainment, a large remit that encompasses streaming including HBO/HBO Max and Discover+, direct-to-consumer, and gaming.
Warner Bros Discovery Merger Closes, Altering Media Landscape
Discovery and WarnerMedia have closed their long-awaited mega-merger, creating a top-scale media player and streaming contender and ending an ill-fated foray into entertainment by AT&T. The combination will unite such disparate assets as HBO, CNN and the nearly 100-year-old Warner Bros film studio with unscripted programming juggernauts like Food Network, HGTV and 90 Day Fiancé.
Warner Bros Discovery stock is expected to begin full trading Monday under the ticker symbol “WBD.” It has already begun changing hands on a “When issued” basis.
In the announcement of the deal’s close Friday, Zaslav called it “An exciting milestone not just for Warner Bros. Discovery but for our shareholders, our distributors, our advertisers, our creative partners and, most importantly, consumers globally,” Zaslav said.
“With our collective assets and diversified business model, Warner Bros. Discovery offers the most differentiated and complete portfolio of content across film, television and streaming.”
With legacy businesses still throwing off billions in free cash flow, Warner Bros Discovery is not likely to make a headlong move into streaming, however.
Scripted film and TV projects are also relatively uncharted waters for Zaslav and the Discovery team, apart from OWN. Not only has Zaslav steered Discovery toward unscripted but he has derided the crush of companies entering the scripted space.
As Discovery absorbed Scripps and its portfolio of lifestyle networks, he favored a metaphor of a kids’ soccer game, with a bunch of kids chasing the scripted ball and Discovery in an open part of the field looking to score unscripted.

Rubius Therapeutics Reports Updated Clinical Data At AACR From The Ongoing Monotherapy Phase 1 Arm Of The Phase 1/2 Clinical Trial Of RTX-240 In Advanced Solid Tumors Demonstrating Single-Agent Activity And Favorable Tolerability
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., April 08, 2022 – Rubius Therapeutics, Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company that is biologically engineering red blood cells to create an entirely new class of cellular medicines called Red Cell Therapeutics™ for the treatment of cancer and autoimmune diseases, today announced updated clinical data from the ongoing monotherapy Phase 1 arm of the Phase 1/2 clinical trial of RTX-240 in patients with advanced solid tumors at the American Association for Cancer Research Annual Meeting.
“In this Phase 1 trial of heavily pretreated patients with advanced solid tumors, RTX-240 demonstrated single-agent activity with encouraging tolerability results, including in patients whose disease had progressed on prior PD-1/PD-L1-based treatment regimens. Based on these data, I believe RTX-240 has the potential to be an ideal candidate to be developed as a combination therapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors, especially in earlier lines of therapy.”
“Immune agonists and cytokines have been the focus of oncology research given their known importance for immune activation. However, current approaches have been unable to overcome toxicity challenges, resulting in a narrow therapeutic index, particularly in combination with checkpoint inhibitors. With today’s updated clinical data showing that RTX-240 generated clinical responses with favorable tolerability results in patients whose tumors had progressed on therapy with anti-PD-1/PD-L1 antibodies, we believe these data support the potential of immune agonists for the treatment of cancer,” sai Larry Turka, M.D., chief scientific officer and head of translational medicine at Rubius Therapeutics.
“Given the clinical results observed, we are expanding the ongoing Phase 1 arm of RTX-240 in combination with pembrolizumab to patients with NSCLC and RCC who have had fewer prior treatment regimens. This cohort is expected to inform our strategy of advancing RTX-240 in combination with pembrolizumab in a Phase 2 clinical trial.”

With the carbapenem class antibiotic agents, a large multicenter clinical trial proved imipenem therapy superior to aminoglycoside and a macrolide antibiotic, with survival demonstrably superior only in the patients with the highest acute physiology and chronic health evaluation scores.
Multiple studies have suggested that inappropriate initial therapy increases mortality risk.110,111 Initiating two gram-negative agents rather than one increases the likelihood that initial therapy will include an active agent, which in turn is associated with lower mortality risk.195-199 There are no differences in clinical outcomes between patients receiving definitive therapy with one versus two active agents once susceptibilities are available.
Traditional head-to-head monotherapy studies are unlikely to demonstrate superiority of a novel drug over an established agent at equivalent doses without recruiting an impractical number of patients.
Withdrawal to monotherapy studies are ethically dubious; these studies often do not provide efficacy as monotherapy, and include a patient population different from that in which the new AED will subsequently be licensed.
238 Meta-analyses of studies involving 2717 patients comparing monotherapy with various antiandrogens suggested that the hazard ratio for recurrence was greater with antiandrogen monotherapy than with medical or surgical castration, but statistical significance was approached but not reached.

The treatment of a medical disorder with a single drug.
A type or instance of such treatment: evaluating antimalarial monotherapies.

Monotherapy In The Treatment Of Hypertension
Approximately 600 people with mild to moderate hypertension were treated with a regimen that started with monotherapy.
Reduction in sodium intake achieved adequate blood pressure control in 38 percent, higher than that achieved without therapy.
When initial blood pressure was greater than 110 mm Hg, satisfactory control was achieved in fewer patients; in this group, therapy with reduction of sodium intake alone is rarely effective.
All measures were about equally successful in treating isolated systolic hypertension.
The group given thiazide diuretics alone had an increased number of deaths from myocardial infarcts compared with other groups.
This was not seen if a beta-blocking drug or a centrally-acting drug was used in conjunction with the thiazide diuretic.
Monotherapy can successfully reduce blood pressure in most patients with mild hypertension.
Combination Therapy
Combination therapy or polytherapy is therapy that uses more than one medication or modality.
‘Pharmaceutical’ combination therapy may be achieved by prescribing/administering separate drugs, or, where available, dosage forms that contain more than one active ingredient.
Sometimes “Polymedicine” is used to refer to pharmaceutical combination therapy.
Conditions treated with combination therapy include tuberculosis, leprosy, cancer, malaria, and HIV/AIDS. One major benefit of combination therapies is that they reduce development of drug resistance since a pathogen or tumor is less likely to have resistance to multiple drugs simultaneously.
Combination therapy may seem costlier than monotherapy in the short term, but when it is used appropriately, it causes significant savings: lower treatment failure rate, lower case-fatality ratios, fewer side-effects than monotherapy, slower development of resistance, and thus less money needed for the development of new drugs.
Combination therapy has gained momentum in oncology in recent years, with various studies demonstrating higher response rates with combinations of drugs compared to monotherapies, and the FDA recently approving therapeutic combination regimens that demonstrated superior safety and efficacy to monotherapies.
Combination therapy with two or more antibiotics are often used in an effort to treat multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

Requirements To Become A Sonographer
Why would someone want to become a sonographer? There are many reasons why this is a desirable career path.
According to the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography, sonographers enjoy working as an integral member of a larger healthcare team, creating high-tech images to aid physicians and doctors in diagnosing illnesses, and working one-on-one with healthy and seriously ill patients.
Medical sonographers use a variety of tools to create images of specific parts of the body, including organs and tissues, which may include the abdomen, blood vessels, breasts, heart, and female reproductive systems, according to the SDMS. These images can be important in detecting a variety of diseases, including heart and vascular disease, which according to the Centers for Disease Control is the leading cause of death in the United States.
Some of the technologies sonographers use on the job range from A-Mode ultrasound machines to pulsed-wave Doppler ultrasound units, according to O*NET. They also typically use a small tool called a transducer that is placed upon a patient’s skin in the area to be imaged.
After students have completed a sonography program, they can prepare to work toward sonographer certification.
By comparison, the ARDMS offers five different certification credentials, ranging from registered diagnostic medical sonographer to registered vascular technologist.
As for sonographer licensing, states may also have specific requirements.

A diagnostic medical sonographer, also known simply as a sonographer, uses imaging equipment and soundwaves to form images of many parts of the body, known as ultrasounds.
While some employers may want specialized sonographers, many general sonographer positions will require imaging experience in several of these areas.
Diagnostic medical sonographers are often found performing ultrasound procedures at a patient’s bedside, but also may work with imaging machines in a dedicated room within the hospital or clinic.
While diagnostic medical sonographers work predominantly in hospitals, they can also be employed in doctors’ offices and medical and diagnostic labs.
There are several organizations that offer certification for sonographers, including the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, Cardiovascular Credentialing International, and American Registry of Radiologic Technologists.
Most certified diagnostic medical sonographers will practice under the title, registered diagnostic medical sonographer, which some will also receive advanced certifications.
With additional training and education, some sonographers may move into supervisory positions or become an advanced sonographer.

Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramics
Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramics SubstratesLTCC is the cost-effective and upgraded version of HTCC with firing temperatures in the range of 700-960°C. Likewise, HTCC conventional tape casting is the processing of LTCC substrates.
LTCC offers functionality such as high/low permittivity, low dielectric loss in a single multilayer package and multi-functional features by integration and interconnections.
Among these methods, low melting point glass addition is conventionally used for the fabrication of LTCC. Sebastian et al.
The subclasses of LTCC are glass-free LTCC, glass bonded ceramics, glass-ceramic composites and glass ceramics.
Although the first challenge in the development of LTCC compositions is to decrease the sintering temperature close to 900 °C, the work itself is far more complicated when commercial products for industrial purposes are targeted.
10.3.2 Low temperature co-fired ceramic MEMSThe use of LTCC to fabricate microstructures is an established process, with the first devices being demonstrated in the late 1990s.
These are fired in air for 30 minutes at 500 °C and then 20 minutes at 850 °C, which hardens the LTCC and fires the ink.
Co-Fired Ceramic
Integrated circuit package made out of fired ceramic material.
Co-fired ceramic devices are monolithic, ceramic microelectronic devices where the entire ceramic support structure and any conductive, resistive, and dielectric materials are fired in a kiln at the same time.
Co-fired ceramic devices are fabricated using a multilayer approach.
The starting material is composite green tapes, consisting of ceramic particles mixed with polymer binders.
Individual tapes are then bonded together in a lamination procedure before the devices are fired in a kiln, where the polymer part of the tape is combusted and the ceramic particles sinter together, forming a hard and dense ceramic component.
Inductors are formed by printing conductor windings on ferrite ceramic tape.
Low-temperature co-firing technology presents advantages compared to other packaging technologies including high temperature co-firing: the ceramic is generally fired below 1,000 °C due to a special composition of the material.
Low Temperature Co-Fired Ceramic
APITech’s LTCC is an alternative glass-ceramic multilayer substrate medium that incorporates conventional thick-film-material metal systems, providing a rugged, cost competitive substrate that can incorporate embedded passive components, along with more advanced devices such as flipchips and wire bonded bare die.
Overview High performance electronic packaging and substrate technology.
Specialist Substrates Tapes: range of dielectric materials providing low cost high performance and low loss characteristics.

Complaints About Air Canada CEO’S English Speech Justified, Languages Commissioner Finds
A preliminary report from the Commissioner of Official Languages says complaints about a predominantly English speech by Air Canada’s CEO last fall – that allege the speech didn’t meet the airline’s obligations under the Official Languages Act – were founded.
Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau sparked an outcry last November when, following a 26-minute speech in English that included about 20 seconds of French, he told reporters he didn’t need to learn French to live in Montreal for 14 years.
As of Feb. 28, the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages had received 2,680 complaints about Rousseau’s Nov. 3 speech to the Montreal chamber of commerce – the most complaints ever received by the office in a single case.
In response, Air Canada said Rousseau’s remarks had been misinterpreted and the complaints should have been dismissed by the Office of the Commissioner, since the speech was made during a private activity.
French and English text versions of the speech were given to the chamber’s communications representative, and Air Canada claims also to have simultaneously posted French and English versions of the speech on its website, but did not specify when, according to the report.
Air Canada occupies a special place in Canadian society, he wrote, adding the events of Nov. 3 caused harm to the status of French in Canada.
The commissioner also recommends adding specific and measurable official language performance objectives to the performance evaluations of all senior leaders, and asks Air Canada to update the commissioner’s office on initiatives undertaken to strengthen official languages practices.
Quebec Language Watchdog Finds Complaints About Air Canada CEO Speech In English Were Founded
The Commissioner of Official Languages says a preliminary report into whether a speech by the chief executive of Air Canada in November met the airline’s obligations under the Official Languages Act has established that the complaints are founded.

Air Canada CEO Debut A PR Disaster Following Comments On French, Say Experts
Air Canada’s new chief executive ignited a PR disaster by his inept handling about the French language that could have repercussions for the airline as it attempts to get back on its feet from the COVID-19 pandemic, say public relations experts.
“I can’t remember a more tone deaf and ham-fisted handling of a new CEO’s debut on the public stage than this,” said Bob Pickard, a veteran public relations expert and principal at Signal Leadership Communication Inc. While former Air Canada chief financial officer Michael Rousseau may be very capable, Pickard said his maiden speech as CEO Wednesday – almost entirely in English, his defensive response to reporters and then unsatisfactory apology – demonstrate a failure of emotional, cultural, communications and social intelligence.
Instead, he showed great disrespect to Air Canada employees and customers, especially by releasing an apology on the company’s website instead of a personal video where he tried to strike the right chord of contrition, Pickard said in an interview.
He said Rousseau should be ashamed for boasting that his mother and wife speak French while never learning the language.
A spokesperson for the commissioner of official languages says more than 1,000 complaints about Air Canada have been filed since the incident on Wednesday afternoon.
Public relations expert Jason Patuano, senior director of public relations firm TACT, said Rousseau’s lack of sensitivity could have a ripple effect on the airline, just as United Airlines faced a couple of years ago when its removal of a passenger from one of its flights went viral and had a large impact on the value of its stock.
Air Canada’s shares climbed 6.1 per cent as the Toronto Stock Exchange set new record highs.

Raymond Theberge notes that the conclusions are not final and that the parties involved will have the chance to provide comment before the final report.
Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau sparked an outcry last year when, following a speech almost entirely in English, he told reporters he did not need to learn French to get by in Montreal.
He later apologized and has since started taking French lessons.
The Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages received 2,680 complaints as of Feb. 28 about the speech to make it the most complaints ever received for a single case.
Theberge said in his statement that bilingualism is a crucial skill for leaders, especially those in institutions subject to the Official Languages Act.

GM Hits Reset Button With The Chevrolet Bolt, Kicks Off New Ad Campaign
General Motors is set to launch a new ad campaign to regain customers’ trust in the Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV, which were plagued with an expensive battery recall and production halts for more than a year.
In 2021, multiple reports of battery fires led GM to issue a massive recall for any Bolt EV made since the start of production in 2017.
When asked what consumers should consider when thinking about purchasing a Bolt and its past battery issues, Balch said that the Bolt represents a focus on gaining consumer trust and a good entry point for drivers thinking about switching to an all-electric experience.

Chevy Bolt EV, Bolt EUV Regenerative Braking How To: Video
General Motors has released a video instructing owners of the Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV on how to get the most out of the compact car’s standard regenerative braking system.
The Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV both feature on-demand regenerative braking that is controlled via the steering wheel-mounted paddles.
The Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV also feature seamless regenerative braking when in the standard ‘Drive’ mode, which will use a smaller amount of regenerative braking to slow the vehicle when the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal, without them having to pull the steering wheel paddle.
The user can adjust the strength of the automatic regenerative braking, with four regenerative braking levels to choose from.
The Bolt EV and Bolt EUV also feature one-pedal driving, which allows the user to rapidly slow the vehicle by simply lifting off the accelerator.
While the only Chevy models it’s currently offered on are the Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV, similar regenerative braking control systems will likely appear in the Chevy Equinox EV, Chevy Silverado EV and other future EV models from the brand.
Power in the Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV comes from a single, front axle-mounted electric motor rated at 201 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque, which receives energy from a 65 kWh lithium-ion battery.
Chevrolet Bolt
The Chevrolet Bolt or Chevrolet Bolt EV is a battery electric subcompact hatchback produced by General Motors under the Chevrolet marque.
In January 2016, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the production version of the Chevrolet Bolt was unveiled.
As a precautionary measure, Chevrolet issued software updates that allow dealers to install a battery charge limit of 90% to their existing inventory while urging current 2017-2019 Chevy Bolt owners to enable the “Hill Top Reserve” option or to set vehicle “Target Charge Level” to 90%. A final software update was expected to remedy the charging capacity to 100% sometime in April 2021.
On August 20, 2021 Chevrolet extended the recall to include all Bolt models and model years totaling the number of recalled Chevy Bolt cars to nearly 142,000.
While initially expected to share its lithium-ion battery technology with the second generation Chevrolet Volt, the production version of the Bolt uses batteries with a different chemistry more suited to the different charge cycles of a long-range electric vehicle, compared to the more frequent charging/discharging of hybrids and short-range EVs.
Sales totaled 23,297 units in 2017, making the Bolt the U.S. second best selling plug-in car in 2017 after the Tesla Model S. In California, the Bolt listed as the top selling plug-in car with 13,487 units delivered, ahead of the much more expensive Tesla Model S, listed second with 11,813.
In 2015, Chevrolet acknowledged confusion between two vehicles with a similar-sounding names; Bolt and Volt.
2022 Chevrolet Bolt Pros And Cons Review: Edgier But Still Sensible
The Chevrolet Bolt was our 2017 Car of the Year-is the 2022 refresh enough to win the title again?
For the 2022 model year, Chevy gave the Bolt a needed update to compete with an exploding number of new EVs, hoping new clothes on the old emperor would be enough to win the title again.
The Bolt is an affordable commuter car with a range of 259 miles from its 65-kWh battery, which is competitive for its segment.
“I’m continually impressed with how fun the Bolt is to drive,” features editor Christian Seabaugh said.
The updated Bolt has better seats in a roomy interior with a push-button electric gearshift that frees up space.
Chevy dropped the price $5,500 for 2022; you can get a Bolt for $31,995.
While improved, the 2022 Bolt is not a COTY finalist.
Is The Chevy Bolt Basically Dead?
In this story, the fortune tellers are CNN and Automotive News, the entrails are GM’s statement last week regarding the $7 billion investment in EV production, much of which will be spent on the Lake Orion Assembly facility, the future being predicted is that the Chevrolet Bolt and Bolt EUV battery-electric hatchbacks are not much longer for this world.
Parallel to all of this, the Bolt has effectively been out of production since last November, when GM prioritized recalling and replacing all the battery packs in all the Bolts ever produced.
When CNN asked GM about the car, automaker spokesman Dan Flores responded, “Production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV will continue during conversion activities to prepare the facility for production of the Silverado EV and Sierra EV pickups,” and, “We are not disclosing any additional information at this time about Bolt EV or Bolt EUV production.” Adding up all the circumstantial evidence, CNN rang the doomsday bell with, “It sure looks like GM is about to pull the plug on the Bolt.”.
AN said industry intelligence firm AutoForecast Solutions believes the Bolt will die in 2023, the Bolt EUV in 2024.
Both models are a little larger than the Bolt EUV, but the Ultium internals and $30,000 price would make the new crossovers more advanced than the Bolt for less dosh than the Bolt.
A Bloomberg Quint piece thinks CNN and AN are jumping the gun, suggesting that GM could transfer production to another one of its EV assembly plants coming on line, adding the left-field idea that GM could keep the car but ditch the Bolt name.
Bloomberg supports that latter take by noting that the Bolt is Chevy’s most successful conquest vehicle and gets high ownership satisfaction scores, but is a Bolt by any other name still a draw?

Kinder Chocolates Recalled Over Salmonella Concerns
Confectionary company Ferrero has voluntarily recalled some of its Kinder chocolates from U.S. shelves because of a potential link to salmonella contamination.
The U.S. recall is for Kinder Happy Moments Milk Chocolate and Crispy Wafers Assortment and for Kinder Mix Chocolate Treats Basket, which were manufactured at a facility where Salmonella typhimurium was detected, the company said in a statement distributed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
“While there are no reports of illness in the United States to date, Ferrero is voluntarily recalling the products out of an abundance of caution due to reported cases of Salmonella in consumers that consumed products in Europe that were manufactured at the same facility,” the company said.
Recalls have already spread across Europe, where several cases of salmonella-related illness have been linked back to potential contamination issues with Ferrero chocolates.
On April 2, Ferrero recalled select batches of its Kinder Surprise chocolates in the United Kingdom that were manufactured at a plant in Belgium where salmonella was detected.
Four days later, the company expanded this recall to include additional products, including certain batches of Kinder Mini Eggs, Kinder Egg Hunt Kit, and Kinder Schokobons.
For every case of salmonella that’s confirmed because somebody suspected the illness and got tested, there are usually at least another 30 people who get food poisoning and don’t go to a doctor or get tests, according to the CDC. U.S. consumers who have purchased recalled Kinder products shouldn’t eat them, and can contact Ferrero customer service at 800-688-3552 to request a refund.
Ferrero Recalls Kinder Chocolates In U.S. Over Salmonella Fears
Italian confectionery giant Ferrero said Thursday it had recalled certain varieties of its Kinder chocolates from retailers in the United States due to possible salmonella contamination.
The company said it was cooperating with the Food and Drug Administration over reported salmonella cases in Europe, announcing the precautionary recall of two chocolate varieties from three retailers in the United States.
“There are no confirmed cases in the US to date and no other Kinder or Ferrero Products are affected by this recall,” the company said in a statement.
Ferrero added that it was working closely with the retailers to ensure the products were no longer “Available for purchase.”
Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause symptoms including diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps in humans and is one of the most common food-borne infections.
Most cases are caused by the ingestion of food contaminated with animal or human feces.
Britain’s Food Standards Agency has said 63 cases of salmonella have been identified across the UK. In France, 21 cases have been reported and 15 reported having eaten the Kinder products that have now been recalled, according to the French public health service.
A Kinder chocolate factory in Belgium has been ordered to close after it was linked to dozens of salmonella cases.
Belgium’s food safety authority has also ordered the recall of all Kinder products made at the factory in Arlon, which is owned by Ferrero.
Suspected salmonella cases linked to Kinder chocolate have been reported in countries including the UK, Germany, France and Belgium.
Belgium’s food safety authority, the AFSCA, said the factory was ordered to shut after Ferrero was unable to provide complete information for its investigation.
On Thursday, Ferrero recalled some of its Kinder chocolates from shops in the US over concerns about potential salmonella contamination.
Some Kinder chocolates have also been recalled in parts of Asia, including Hong Kong and Singapore.
Ferrero has previously described the recalls as “Precautionary” and said none of its Kinder products released for sale had tested positive for salmonella.
Salmonella Homepage
CDC estimates Salmonella bacteria cause about 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the United States every year.
Most people who get ill from Salmonella have diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps.
Symptoms usually begin 6 hours to 6 days after infection and last 4 to 7 days.
Most people recover without specific treatment and should not take antibiotics.
Antibiotics are typically used only to treat people who have severe illness or who are at risk for it.
Some people’s illness may be so severe that they need to be hospitalized.
Salmonella Infection
Salmonella infection is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract.
Typically, people with salmonella infection have no symptoms.
In some cases, the diarrhea associated with salmonella infection can be so dehydrating as to require prompt medical attention.
Your risk of acquiring salmonella infection is higher if you travel to countries with poor sanitation.
Salmonella infection is usually caused by eating raw or undercooked meat, poultry, eggs or egg products.
Factors that may increase your risk of salmonella infection include activities that may bring you into closer contact with salmonella bacteria and health problems that may weaken your resistance to infection in general.
Salmonella infection usually isn’t life-threatening.
Salmonella
Salmonella can be spread by food handlers who do not wash their hands and/or the surfaces and tools they use between food preparation steps, and when people eat raw or undercooked foods.
People who have direct contact with certain animals, including poultry and reptiles, can spread the bacteria from the animals to food if they do not practice proper hand washing hygiene before handling food.
Pets can also spread the bacteria within the home environment if they eat food contaminated with Salmonella.
Past U.S. outbreaks of salmonellosis have been associated with meat products, poultry products, raw or undercooked eggs and dough, dairy products, fruits, leafy greens, raw sprouts, fresh vegetables, nut butters and spreads, pet foods and treats.
Wash the inside walls and shelves of the refrigerator, cutting boards and countertops, and utensils that may have contacted contaminated foods; then sanitize them with a solution of one tablespoon of chlorine bleach to one gallon of hot water; dry with a clean cloth or paper towel that has not been previously used.
People with pets should take special care to avoid cross-contamination when preparing their pet’s food.
Be sure to pick up and thoroughly wash food dishes as soon as pets are done eating, and prevent children, the elderly, and any other people with weak immune systems from handling or being exposed to the food or pets that have eaten potentially contaminated food.
Medical Microbiology
Salmonellosis ranges clinically from the common Salmonella gastroenteritis to enteric fevers which are life-threatening febrile systemic illness requiring prompt antibiotic therapy.
The septicemic form of salmonella infection can be an intermediate stage of infection in which the patient is not experiencing intestinal symptoms and the bacteria cannot be isolated from fecal specimens.
The severity of the infection and whether it remains localized in the intestine or disseminates to the bloodstream may depend on the resistance of the patient and the virulence of the Salmonella isolate.
Most serovars are killed promptly in extraintestinal sites, and the most common human Salmonella infection, gastroenteritis, remains confined to the intestine.
In AIDS, Salmonella infection is common, frequently persistent and bacteremic, and often resistant to even prolonged antibiotic treatment.
Plasmid DNA fingerprinting and bacteria phage lysotyping of Salmonella isolates are powerful epidemiologic tools for studying outbreaks of salmonellosis and tracing the spread of the organisms in the environment.
Antibiotics are not recommended for uncomplicated Salmonella gastroenteritis because they do not shorten the illness and they significantly prolong the fecal excretion of the organisms and increase the number of antibiotic-resistant strains.

Symptoms And Causes
Multiple myeloma is a cancer that forms in a type of white blood cell called a plasma cell.
In multiple myeloma, cancerous plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells.
Signs and symptoms of multiple myeloma can vary and, early in the disease, there may be none.
In the bone marrow, myeloma cells crowd out healthy blood cells, leading to fatigue and an inability to fight infections.
The myeloma cells continue trying to produce antibodies, as healthy plasma cells do, but the myeloma cells produce abnormal antibodies that the body can’t use.
MGUS, like multiple myeloma, is marked by the presence of M proteins – produced by abnormal plasma cells – in your blood.
As myeloma cells crowd out normal blood cells, multiple myeloma can also cause anemia and other blood problems.
Multiple Myeloma
EBV-positive multiple myeloma is classified by the World Health Organization as one form of the Epstein-Barr virus-associated lymphoproliferative diseases and termed Epstein-Barr virus-associated plasma cell myeloma.
This myeloma is characterized by a rise in the number of bone marrow plasma cells or levels of the circulating myeloma protein above that seen in MGUS. Subsequent genetic and epigenetic changes lead to a new, more aggressive clone of plasma cells, which cause further rises in the level of the circulating myeloma protein, further rises in the number of bone marrow plasma cells, or the development of one or more of a specific set of “CRAB” symptoms, which are the basis for diagnosing malignant multiple myeloma and treating the disease.
Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance smoldering multiple myeloma multiple myeloma plasma cell leukemia.
Being asymptomatic, monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance and smoldering multiple myeloma are typically diagnosed fortuitously by detecting a myeloma protein on serum protein electrophoresis tests done for other purposes.
MGUS is a relatively stable condition afflicting 3% of people aged 50 and 5% of people aged 70; it progresses to multiple myeloma at a rate of 0.5-1% cases per year; smoldering multiple myeloma does so at a rate of 10% per year for the first 5 years, but then falls off sharply to 3% per year for the next 5 years and thereafter to 1% per year.
In theory, multiple myeloma can produce all classes of immunoglobulin, but IgG paraproteins are most common, followed by IgA and IgM. IgD and IgE myeloma are very rare.
The biomarker criteria were added so that smouldering people with multiple myeloma at high risk of developing multiple myeloma could be diagnosed before organ damage occurred, so they would therefore have a better prognosis.
Myeloma
In myeloma, the cells grow too much, crowding out normal cells in the bone marrow that make red blood cells, platelets, and other white blood cells.
Scientists don’t understand why some people get myeloma and others don’t.
Age is the most significant risk factor for developing myeloma.
Men are more likely than women to develop myeloma, and myeloma is more than twice as common among Black people as among White people.
In rare cases, exposure to X-rays or other kinds of ionizing radiation may be a risk factor for developing myeloma.
Being overweight and having obesity are linked with a higher risk of getting multiple myeloma.
When more advanced, symptoms of myeloma may include bone pain, especially in the back or ribs; bones that break easily; fever for no known reason; frequent infections; bruising or bleeding easily; trouble breathing; weakness of the arms or legs; and feeling very tired.
Multiple Myeloma: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis And Treatment
The plasma cells crowd out regular blood cells in your bones.
As multiple myeloma gets worse, the plasma cells spill out of your bone marrow and spread. This causes more organ damage.
Multiple myeloma is one of many conditions that can cause problems with your plasma cells.
This is like multiple myeloma, but it causes a single unusual plasma cell growth rather than many of them.
This causes unusual plasma cells in your bone marrow, but there are fewer of them than with multiple myeloma.
Monoclonal antibodies help your immune system find and destroy myeloma cells.
Stem cell transplantation often helps you live longer, but it doesn’t cure multiple myeloma, and it can cause serious complications.
Multiple Myeloma Prognosis, Symptoms, Treatment & Survival Rate
Treatment of multiple myeloma focuses on decreasing the severity of symptoms with medications, stem cell transplants, bisphosphonate therapy, platelet transfusions, and/or plasmapheresis.
What are risk factors for multiple myeloma? Is multiple myeloma hereditary?
Smoldering multiple myeloma is an early precursor to multiple myeloma.
What is the prognosis for multiple myeloma? What is the survival rate for multiple myeloma?
Experimental studies on multiple myeloma have shown that if stem cells from patients with multiple myeloma are grown in cell culture, patients can improve but could also relapse because the stem cells often were contaminated with a few multiple myeloma cells.
If stem cells for multiple myeloma patients are treated with myxoma viruses, the patient’s stem cells are not contaminated multiple myeloma cells.
Researchers have used this method to provide multiple myeloma patients with uncontaminated stem cells successfully preventing relapse of multiple myeloma due to contaminated stem cell cultures.
How Long Can I Live With Multiple Myeloma?
While multiple myeloma doesn’t yet have a cure and can be fatal, patients’ life expectancies vary widely, according to Jens Hillengass, MD, Chief of Myeloma at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Multiple myeloma is a cancer of cells of the immune system which can cause symptoms like holes in the bones, kidney failure, low blood counts and high calcium in the blood.
The cancer’s spread in the body, how a patient likely will respond to treatment factors, blood levels of certain proteins and other substances, kidney function, the patient’s age and overall health – all indicate how well a patient will do during therapy.
Patients with multiple myeloma receive continuous treatments with phases of stronger and less-strong therapy, according to Dr. Hillengass,.
The Roswell Park myeloma team’s credo is: “Our team will do everything that we can to find a cure for multiple myeloma. Furthermore, it is our goal to improve your quality of life and help you to achieve milestones while on your journey, via access to cutting-edge treatment and clinical trials. Together, we can change the way the world views myeloma.”

“Dr. Hillengass says that while it is not yet certain how patients get multiple myeloma,”there are several risk factors like exposure to chemicals, for example, Agent Orange and radiation.
Multiple Myeloma: Symptoms & Treatment
Multiple myeloma is a kind of blood cancer that causes the body to produce abnormal plasma cells.
Accumulate in the bone marrow, outnumber the normal blood cells and limit your body’s ability to make healthy blood cells.
Doctors can treat symptoms and may be able to fully control the disease or slow the production of cancerous cells.
This is done to confirm the diagnosis of multiple myeloma by looking for percentage of abnormal plasma cells in the bone marrow.
Some patients with multiple myeloma need stem cell transplantation.
Stem cells are specialized cells that can develop into different types of blood cells.
The bone marrow in patients with multiple myeloma is making abnormal plasma cells in excess, instead of normal cells.

Gallium Arsenide
GaAs is often used as a substrate material for the epitaxial growth of other III-V semiconductors, including indium gallium arsenide, aluminum gallium arsenide and others.
It has a higher saturated electron velocity and higher electron mobility, allowing gallium arsenide transistors to function at frequencies in excess of 250 GHz. GaAs devices are relatively insensitive to overheating, owing to their wider energy band gap, and they also tend to create less noise in electronic circuits than silicon devices, especially at high frequencies.
In contrast, GaAs has a very high impurity density, which makes it difficult to build integrated circuits with small structures, so the 500 nm process is a common process for GaAs.
The GaAs solar cells, manufactured by Kvant, were chosen because of their higher performance in high temperature environments.
In 1970, the GaAs heterostructure solar cells were developed by the team led by Zhores Alferov in the USSR, achieving much higher efficiencies.
Later, dual- and triple-junction solar cells based on GaAs with germanium and indium gallium phosphide layers were developed as the basis of a triple-junction solar cell, which held a record efficiency of over 32 % and can operate also with light as concentrated as 2,000 suns.
On the other hand, a 2013 review argued against these classifications, saying that when rats or mice inhale fine GaAs powders, they get cancer from the resulting lung irritation and inflammation, rather than from a primary carcinogenic effect of the GaAs itself-and that fine GaAs powders are unlikely to be created in the production or use of GaAs.

Gallium Arsenide: Another Player In Semiconductor Technology
Gallium arsenide, along with other compounds like gallium nitride and silicon carbide, are now sharing the stage.
With high electron mobility, semiconductor devices built of GaAs can function at frequencies in the hundreds of GHz. While not truly considered a “Wide bandgap” material, GaAs does have a considerably higher bandgap than silicon does.
Another selling point is that GaAs devices are far more resistant to heat and give off less EMI. GaAs features a direct bandgap as opposed to silicon’s indirect bandgap.
A major advantage of silicon is that in the real world of mass manufacturing, silicon is far easier to work with.
As detailed below, silicon carbide and gallium nitride feature bandgaps that are considerably in excess to those of silicon or GaAs.
Gallium nitride has an even higher bandgap than silicon carbide and higher electron mobility, too.

What Is Piezoelectricity?
Certain materials tend to accumulate electric charges when a mechanical stress is applied to them.
The word piezoelectricity comes from the Greek word piezein, which means squeeze or press and electron, which means “Amber” and is an ancient source of electric charge.
The French physicists Jacques and Pierre Curie discovered in 1880 that electric charges could accumulate in certain solid materials in response to an applied mechanical stress.
First, let’s look at a non-piezoelectric material: the overall charge center of positive and negative ions in the unit cell coincide, and even with applied deformation, these cancel out, and no overall polarisation appears.
In crystalline piezoelectric materials, the unique distribution of charges gives rise to a dipole moment when the material is deformed.
Why charge is changing for piezoelectric materials and not for any other material?
In an uncompressed crystal, the positive charges and negative charges just cancel each other and the resultant charge is null.
What Is Piezoelectricity?
Piezoelectricity is a phenomenon which means that there is a coupling between the electrical and the mechanical state of the material.
In addition to the materials already mentioned, there are many more materials that exhibit piezoelectric properties such as sucrose, silk, Rochelle salt, PVDF, and many ceramics.
Why don’t all materials exhibit this property? The reason for that is that a for piezoelectricity to appear, the material must be crystalline but not have a symmetry center.
In the equilibrium state, when the material is unloaded, the arrangement of charges within the material lattice is such that the unit cell is uncharged, Fig 1 A. However, when the material is mechanically deformed, there will be a charge redistribution within the unit cell.
The sum of the net charge contribution from all the unit cells will be an electrical polarization of the piece of material.
