Potato Chip

A potato chip is a thin slice of potato that has been either deep fried, baked, or air fried until crunchy.

The Dayton, Ohio-based Mikesell’s Potato Chip Company, founded in 1910, identifies as the “Oldest potato chip company in the United States”.

New Hampshire-based Granite State Potato Chip Factory, founded in 1905 and in operation until 2007, was one of America’s first potato chip manufacturers.

In 1980, inspired by the Maui Chip, an entrepreneur started Cape Cod Potato Chips to produce thicker, batch-cooked “Hawaiian style” potato chips, which came to be known as kettle-style or hand-cooked chips and became a premium, “Gourmet” item.

In Brazil, “Home-style” potato chips are known as batatas portuguesas if their sides are relatively smooth and batatas prussianas if their sides show a wafer biscuit-like pattern, whilst American-like industrial uniform potato chips made from a fried potato purée-based dough are known as “Batata chips”, or just “Chips”.

Many potato chip manufacturers attempt to remove burned and thus potentially acrylamide-rich chips before the packaging process.

Potato sticks are typically packaged in rigid containers, although some manufacturers use flexible pouches, similar to potato chip bags.

Potato Chips Recipe

Preheat the olive oil over medium-high heat in a 4-quart cast iron Dutch oven.

A deep-fry thermometer clipped to the Dutch oven should reach 300 degrees F. While the oil heats, line a large mixing bowl with paper towels.

Carefully add the slices 1 at a time to the hot oil.

Using a spider, constantly move the slices in the hot oil for 3 to 4 minutes or until golden brown and crisp.

Remove the chips with the spider, allowing some of the excess oil to drain off.

Move the finished chips to the lined bowl and shake to remove additional oil.

Adjust the heat as necessary to maintain 300 degrees F and continue slicing and frying the potatoes in small batches.

Post Idea #2: Reflow soldering

Reflow Soldering Process

The key aspects that lead to an effective reflow soldering process are as follows:-Suitable machine.

Acceptable Reflow Profile In order to create an acceptable reflow profile each assembly needs to be considered separately as there are many different aspects that can affect how the reflow oven is programmed.

In order to create a reflow profile thermocouples are connected to a sample assembly in a number of locations to measure the range of temperatures across the PCB. It is recommended to have at least one thermocouple located on a pad towards the edge of the PCB and one thermocouple located on a pad towards the middle of the PCB. Ideally more thermocouples should be used to measure the full range of temperatures across the PCB – known as ‘Delta T’. Within a typical reflow soldering profile there are usually four stages – Preheat, soak, reflow and cooling.

If the reflow profile has insufficient heat applied during the reflow stage there will be solder joints seen similar to the images below:- A common soldering defect after reflow is the formation of mid-chip solder balls/beads as can be seen below.

This can cause the panel to warp during reflow and so the recommended solution is to add ‘copper balancing’ to the waste areas of the panel as can be seen below:- Carefully printed PCB using well designed stencil The earlier process steps within surface mount assembly are critical to an effective reflow soldering process.

Depending on the manufacturing process of the PCB’s and the way in which they have been stored the finish of the PCB’s can lead to poor solderabilty during the reflow soldering process.

The reflow soldering process can be time consuming to setup but is essential to ensure all components are fully soldered without being damaged.

Reflow Soldering

Reflow soldering with long industrial convection ovens is the preferred method of soldering surface mount technology components or SMT to a printed circuit board or PCB. Each segment of the oven has a regulated temperature, according to the specific thermal requirements of each assembly.

The reflow soldering of through-hole components using solder paste in a convection oven process is called intrusive soldering.

The goal of the reflow process is for the solder paste to reach the eutectic temperature at which the particular solder alloy undergoes a phase change to a liquid or molten state.

Wetting is a necessary condition for the formation of solder joints that meet the criteria as “Acceptable” or “Target” conditions, while “Non-conforming” is considered defective according to IPC. The reflow oven temperature profile is suited for characteristics of a particular circuit board assembly, the size and depth of the ground plane layer within the board, the number of layers within the board, the number and size of the components, for example.

The temperature profile for a particular circuit board will allow for reflow of solder onto the adjoining surfaces, without overheating and damaging the electrical components beyond their temperature tolerance.

An important metric for the first phase of the reflow process is the temperature slope rate or rise vs time.

The third section, the reflow zone, is also referred to as the “Time above reflow” or “Temperature above liquidus”, and is the part of the process where the maximum temperature is reached.

Step By Step Reflow Soldering Process. How Does It Work?

Here are four types of reflow soldering zones used for the reflow soldering process.

Reflow zone – Reflow occurs in the reflow zone when the surface of the metal melts and watts.

In this section, we will discuss the main smt reflow soldering defects that can be caused by inefficient reflow profiles and the reflow soldering process.

In the Cold Solder Joint reflow soldering defects, A dull, grayish appearance is caused by poorly wetted solder connections after soldering.

Possible solutions to this problem include Setting a maximum reflow temperature high enough for reflow of the material, After reflow, accelerate the cooling rate, and Vibrations of an assembly during reflow and immediately afterward are minimized.

Tombstoning refers to a soldering defect resulting from force imbalances during reflow soldering that causes a chip component to pull into a vertical position and have only one terminal connected to the PCB. An uneven heating process can result in tombstoning by causing a difference in temperature at the component terminals.

Reflow soldering double sided PCB. Because double-sided SMT reflow is highly in demand due to cost-saving and compact PCBA size of advanced technology products.

Solder resist defined solder lands The alternative situation is that the solder resist layer starts outside of the Cu. In that case, the solder lands are Cu defined.

If a solder land is solder resist defined, the Cu must extend far enough underneath the solder resist to allow for tolerances in Cu etching and solder resist placement during board production.

Care should be taken when selecting a solder, and note that solder types are categorized by solder sphere size.

These may arise because: The solder paste deposit is not sufficiently high: components or their leads may not make proper contact with the paste, resulting in open circuits or bad joints, or There is insufficient solder volume for a proper solder joint, also resulting in open circuits, or The activator is used up rapidly in a small solder paste deposit, so that the paste no longer properly wets the component metallization, also resulting in open circuits A second important aspect in solder paste printing is smearing.

Solder paste printing on solder and capped resist defined layouts Another exception lies with the very large solder lands, such as when printing solder paste on a heat sink land.

Solder paste dimensions on the land area for an exposed die pad of HVQFN48 Depending on the solder paste used, the solder paste deposits printed on a large land may not always coalesce completely.

Compatibility of ball and solder paste alloys, for packages with solder balls Solder ball SnPb solder Pb-free solder SnPb balls mature technology ok Pb-free balls not advised ok 5.

Printed Circuit Board Manufacturing & PCB Assembly

Reflow soldering is a process in which a solder paste is used to temporarily attach one or thousands of tiny electrical components to their contact pads, after which the entire assembly is subjected to controlled heat.

Heating may be accomplished by passing the assembly through a reflow oven or under an infrared lamp or by soldering individual joints with a desoldering hot air pencil.

Wave soldering is a bulk pcb soldering process used in the manufacture of printed circuit boards.

As the circuit board makes contact with this wave, the components become soldered to the board.

Wave soldering is used for both through-hole printed circuit assemblies, and surface mount.

During reflow soldering, there is solder on the pcb before the furnace, and only the coated solder paste is melted and welded after soldering;.

During wave soldering, there is no solder on the pcb before the furnace, and the solder wave generated by the welder coats the solder on the pads to be soldered.

Reflow Soldering Made Easy

Reflow soldering is a very effective method for soldering circuit boards with lots of surface mount components.

At least most of the times ;). Place components.

With all the components in place, you are ready for the reflow process.

The basic idea is to heat the circuit board to a temperature where the solder melts, then let it cool.

In the professional world, a specific temperature profile is used to ensure that the solder melts properly and that the components aren’t damaged from the heat.

Just get the board hot enough to make the solder melt, then cool the board.

Look for solder bridges, misplaced components and bad/non-existing solder joints.

Reflow Soldering Profiles

Many batch reflow ovens use a thermocouple sensor to measure the temperature of the PCB. This sensor should measure the temperature of the relevant cold spot on the PCB. Ideally the sensor is soldered on the ground pin of a large component, or clamped inside a via near this ground pin.

In the reflow zone, the temperature rises at a rate of approximately 2 °C to a temperature above the melting point.

The peak temperature for the reflow zone is at least 25 °C above TAL, because solder both coalesces better with the copper and wets the pads and component pins better when it is hotter -thereby creating better joints.

With the soak zone at 150 °C and the reflow zone at 245 °C, the temperature rise from soak zone to reflow zone is 95 °C. Due to thermal inertia, such a large quick temperature rise may, again, lead to temperature differences across the PCB. Rather than increasing the temperature of the soak zone on the whole, an alternative profile is to make the soak zone temperature a slow ramp from 150 °C to 180 °C. The lower relative peak of the reflow zone results in a more equalized temperature across the PCB and components.

For reflow soldering, the advised soldering temperature is 245 °C, which is well below the advised temperature of a soldering iron for hand soldering.

With both methods, the oven starts holding the temperature when it reaches the reflow temperature; the difference between the two options is the start of the cool-down phase.

ZoneLeadLead-free Preheat to 150 °C in 60 s to 150 °C in 60 s Soak from 150 °C to 165 °C in 120 s from 150 °C to 180 °C in 120 s Reflow Peak temperature 225 °C to 235 °C, hold for 20 s Peak temperature 245 °C to 255 °C, hold for 15 s Cooling -4 °C/s or free-air cooling -4 °C/s or free-air cooling.

Post Idea #5: Electronic trading platform

One early issue the Subcommittee identified is the varying regulatory treatment to which credit and municipal bond trading platforms in the U.S. are subject based on differences in trading protocols or business models.

Some platforms are regulated as alternative trading systems, some are regulated as broker-dealers, and other significant platforms operating the same or similar models are not regulated at all.

As a practical matter, electronic RFQ platforms for corporate and municipal bonds are excluded from Regulation ATS based on the characteristics of the RFQ trading protocol.

Accordingly, a large and growing fraction of the corporate and municipal bond volumes that trade electronically in the U.S. today occurs on platforms regulated only as broker-dealers.

Recent regulatory proposals relating to electronic trading platforms in the equity markets, such as proposed Form ATS-N and Regulation SCI, are premised on the status of electronic trading venues as ATSs.

To the extent a regulation applies only to ATSs in the fixed income market, such rules would capture only a small percentage of the notional volume of corporate and municipal bonds volumes that currently trades on electronic trading platforms.

Without a unifying regulatory framework for all fixed income electronic trading platforms, market structures will likely fragment further as regulators adopt new regulations that apply to only one type of platform.

Electronic Trading Platform

An electronic trading platform is a piece of computer software that allows users to place orders for financial products over a network with a financial intermediary.

In 1992, Globex became the first electronic trading platform to reach the market.

Electronic trading platforms often provide historical data, including graphs, to their customers to inform trading decisions.

Electronic trading platforms also commonly provide Application Programming Interfaces that allow users to execute trades, view current and historical data, and evaluate trading performance.

The director of the SEC alleged that the businessmen “Deprived potential purchasers of adequate disclosures about XRP and Ripple’s business and other important long-standing protections that are fundamental to our robust public market system.” After the lawsuit was filed, XRP’s price fell by 25%. Some popular electronic trading platforms today use a simple interface to minimize trading friction.

With the development of electronic trading platforms, the bar to entering algorithmic trading has been vastly lowered.

Alpaca is another popular platform specifically designed for algorithmic trading that offers clear documentation for a variety of languages and provide testing functionality in their API. High Frequency Trading is a subset of algorithmic trading that involves buying and selling small deal sizes in a very short amount of time.

What Is An Electronic Trading Platform?

If you wish to get into online trading, then you will have to get to grips with what is indeed one of the most integral factors of this process – the electronic trading platform.

What is also known as an electronic trading exchange, or an online trading platform, is a digital programing system run on a computer network which is utilized for the placing of orders, the trading of information and data, related to products being traded, as well as for the authentification of users, and their performances which will involve various operations and trading operations.

These systems run across communications networks that are supported by financial intermediaries, or in other cases, directly between those pledged to a particular trading platform.

These platforms will permit the electronic or online trading levels that people all around the world require, which can then be activated from any location in the world, as opposed to floor trading which would rely on the more lengthy and slow processes of telephone based trading and open outcry.

In 2017, we have reached heights where online trading software has become so incredibly intelligent and developed, that the entire process of trading can be accomplished in a very timely and smooth time.

You know what trading is, but what exactly is a platform? Basically, a platform is a certain kind of computing mainframe or operating system – like a database or similar kind of collective software that is run through things like microprocessors, specialized computers, or similar types of computing hardware, which are utilized to process and run a certain kind of software.

Here we saw the foundations of dark pools, electronic communication networks, and it wasn’t long before the major trading firms began catching on to the new trends in online trading.
