Post Idea #1: Closed set

From Wolfram MathWorld

There are several equivalent definitions of a closed set.

Every point outside has a neighborhood disjoint from.

The point-set topological definition of a closed set is a set which contains all of its limit points.

A closed set is one for which, whatever point is picked outside of , can always be isolated in some open set which doesn’t touch.

The most commonly encountered closed sets are the closed interval, closed path, closed disk, interior of a closed path together with the path itself, and closed ball.

The Cantor set is an unusual closed set in the sense that it consists entirely of boundary points.

It is possible for a set to be neither open nor closed, e.g., the half-closed interval.

Closed Set

In geometry, topology, and related branches of mathematics, a closed set is a set whose complement is an open set.

In a topological space, a closed set can be defined as a set which contains all its limit points.

In a complete metric space, a closed set is a set which is closed under the limit operation.

A set is closed in X if and only if it is equal to its closure in X. Equivalently, a set is closed if and only if it contains all of its limit points.

Any intersection of any family of closed sets is closed.

The Cantor set is an unusual closed set in the sense that it consists entirely of boundary points and is nowhere dense.

If f:X→Y is a function between topological spaces then f is a continuous if and only if preimages of closed sets in Y are closed in X..

Closed Set: Definition & Example

If you think of just the numbers from 0 to 9, then that’s a closed set.

Now, which part do you think would make up your closed set? Is it the inside of the fence or the outside? If you picked the inside, then you’re absolutely correct! The inside of the fence represents your closed set as you can only choose the things inside the fence.

A set that has closure isn’t always a closed set.

The set of real numbers is not a closed set, as the real numbers can go on to infinity.

As we learned, a closed set is a set whose complement is an open set.

One way you can check whether a particular set is a closed set or not is to see if it’s fully bounded with a boundary or limit.

Mathematical examples of closed sets include closed intervals, closed paths, and closed balls.

Free Math Worksheets

After reading this lesson, you will be able to define and give examples of closed sets.

Intuitively, a closed set is a set which has some boundary.

We can immediately give a few examples of closed sets.

Example 6: Every segment $[a, b]$ is closed in $mathbf $.The closure of a set.

Of a set A, denoted by $overline $ or $mathcal A$, is an intersection of all closed sets which contain set A. In other words,.

In other words, $$overline = A cup A’.$$.The boundary of a set.

A boundary of a set is a closed set also.

Encyclopedia Of Mathematics

Thus, all points of the complement to a closed set are interior points, and so a closed set can be defined as the complement to an open set.

The concept of a closed set is basic to the definition of a topological space as a non-empty set $X$ with a distinguished system of sets satisfying the following axioms: $X$ itself and the empty set $emptyset$ are closed; the intersection of any number of closed sets is closed; the union of finitely many closed sets is closed.

This article was adapted from an original article by A.A. Mal’tsev, which appeared in Encyclopedia of Mathematics – ISBN 1402006098.

A subset A of a topological space X is closed if set X A is open.

Given a subset A of a topological space X, the interior of A, denoted Int(A), is the union of all open subsets contained in A. The closure of A, denoted A (or sometimes Cl(A is the intersection of all closed sets containing A. Note.

A topological space X is a Hausdorff space if for each pair of distinct points x1 , x2 X, there exist neighborhoods U1 of x1 and U2 of x2 such that U1 U2 = .

Every finite point set in a Hausdorff space X is closed.

On page 99, Munkres comments that “… most of the spaces that are important to mathematicians are Hausdorff spaces. The following two theorems give some substance to these remarks.” Theorem 17.10.

The product of two Hausdorff spaces is a Hausdorff space.

A subspace of a Hausdorff space is a Hausdorff space.

Many people actually use this as the definition of a closed set, and then the definition we’re using, given above, becomes a theorem that provides a characterization of closed sets as complements of open sets.

2 ] R. Then Example 2: For each n N, let Sn be the closed set c. Remark: The interior, exterior, and boundary of a set comprise a partition of the set.

4 But suppose we change the example so that u : R2+ R – i.e., we’ve changed the domain of u from R2++ to R2+. Now the set u−1 −∞, includes the boundary of the set R2+ , i.e., the axes of R2+. The inverse image of the set does not appear to be an open set, as it was before.

The function u(x1 , x2 ) = x1 x2 doesn’t seem any less continuous than it was before – and indeed, when we define continuity, as we’re going to do shortly, we’ll find that u is continuous, even with the domain R2+. The key to this puzzle is in the condition, two paragraphs above, that for every open set A in the target space Y , the set f −1 must be “Open in X” – i.e., open in the domain of f. In Example 7, the domain of u is R2++ ; in our variation on the example, the domain of u is R2+. Each of these sets is a metric space, with the metric it inherits from R2 , but they are not the same metric space as R2. Therefore a set might be open in one of these three metric spaces but not in another.

As the metric space playing the role of the definition’s changes from X = R2 to X = R2+ to X = R2++ , the set B(x, r) changes from, first, the whole disc about the point of radius r = 1, to the “Half-disc” which is the intersection of the whole disc and R2+ , to a set that’s not defined – the set is not defined in the third case because x / X. But undefined sets like this did not appear in our proof in Example 7, because all the -balls we used were centered at points x R2++. In order to take a general approach to this issue, let’s suppose we begin with a metric space, but then we want to work in a subspace, where X 0 is a subset of X and d 0 is the metric that X 0 inherits from.

Any subset S X 0 is open in the metric space X 0 if and only if it’s open in the metric space X. 5 But when we moved instead to the subspace X 0 = R2+ X, that set was not an open set in the original metric space X = R2. Therefore there were sets, like the half-disc B 0 – i.e., B(x, r) R2+ – that are open in the metric space X 0 but not open in the original metric space X. This is a common occurrence.

The set S is open relative to X 0 if S is an open set in the metric space X 0 , with the metric it inherits from.

The Toronto Star is owned by Toronto Star Newspapers Limited, a subsidiary of Torstar Corporation and part of Torstar’s Daily News Brands division.

The Star was created in 1892 by striking Toronto News printers and writers, led by future Mayor of Toronto and social reformer Horatio Clarence Hocken, who became the newspaper’s founder, along with another future mayor, Jimmy Simpson.

From 1910 to 1973, the Star published a weekend supplement, the Star Weekly.

In the 1980s, Michael Farber wrote in the Montreal Gazette that the Star’s coverage was Toronto-centric to the point that any story was said to carry an explanation as to “What it means to Metro.” Conversely, Canadian sociologist Elke Winter wrote in 2011 that the Toronto Star was less “Toronto-centric” than its rival, The Globe and Mail, writing that the Star “Consciously reports for and from Canada’s most multicultural city” and catered to a diverse readership.

In 1998, the Toronto Star purchased a majority stake in Sing Tao’s Canadian newspaper Sing Tao Daily, which it jointly owns with Sing Tao News Corporation.

Sing Tao Daily encountered controversy in April 2008, after media watchers discovered the paper had altered a translated Toronto Star article about the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games protests to adhere to Chinese government’s official line.

On September 15, 2015, the Toronto Star released the Toronto Star Touch tablet app, which was a free interactive news app with interactive advertisements.

Alternative Fuels Data Center: How Do Hybrid Electric Cars Work?

Hybrid electric vehicles are powered by an internal combustion engine and an electric motor, which uses energy stored in batteries.

A hybrid electric vehicle cannot be plugged in to charge the battery.

Instead, the battery is charged through regenerative braking and by the internal combustion engine.

The extra power provided by the electric motor can potentially allow for a smaller engine.

The battery can also power auxiliary loads and reduce engine idling when stopped.

Together, these features result in better fuel economy without sacrificing performance.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle

Although lead-acid batteries are likely to be used initially in many hybrid vehicles due to their relatively low cost, their limited power density and short cycle life will force manufacturers to turn to advanced batteries in the future.

Lithium-ion batteries need improvements in cycle life and cost before they will be commercially viable for hybrid electric vehicles.

The battery requirements are accordingly different: the Prius-type hybrid requires a low-energy, high-power battery with a power-to-energy ratio of 15-20.

Hybrid Vs Electric Cars: When To Choose One Or The Other

So what is the difference between the two? Which car is best for me? In this guide, we will break down hybrid vs electric cars and help you decide when you should choose one or the other.

Hybrid vs Electric: Which One is Right for Me? There are pros and cons in the hybrid vs electric car debate.

With so many models of hybrid cars to choose from from a lot of different manufacturers, you will more than likely be able to find a hybrid car that you like aesthetically.

Power – Hybrid cars typically have less power than a conventional car but more power than an electric car.

Maintenance – There is a difference between hybrid and fully electric car maintenance because a fully electric car doesn’t have a combustion engine in addition to the electric engine.

We do expect more charging points to be installed as the popularity of electric cars increases, but for now, it is a win for hybrid vs electric.

2021 U.S. Hybrid And Electric Vehicle Sales Jumped Significantly

Of these, 801,550 were hybrids and 434,879 were battery electric vehicles.

For hybrids that’s a 76 percent increase over last year, and for EVs it’s an even more impressive 83 percent jump.

Of all cars sold in 2021, just 5 percent were hybrids, and 3 percent EVs.

The best-selling Ford F-Series pickup alone moved 726,004 units alone in 2021.That said, manufacturers with strong hybrid lineups did well this year with those vehicles.

Toyota’s hybrid sales rose 73 percent to 583,697, and Honda grew hybrid sales by 67 percent to 107,060.

Even the star-crossed Chevy Bolt, hit by a wave of troubling news regarding battery pack fires, managed to increase its figures by almost 20 percent.

As policies, regulations, and consumer acceptance shifts, we can expect these sales to grow.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle

A hybrid electric vehicle is a type of hybrid vehicle that combines a conventional internal combustion engine system with an electric propulsion system.

Ford’s hybrid system, Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive and General Motors/Chrysler’s Two-Mode Hybrid technologies are full hybrid systems.

A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, also known as a plug-in hybrid, is a hybrid electric vehicle with rechargeable batteries that can be restored to full charge by connecting a plug to an external electric powersource.

Except for the Prius c, sales of the other models of the Prius family and the Camry Hybrid suffered a decline from 2012, while the Fusion Hybrid experienced a 164.3% increase from 2012, and C-Max Hybrid sales climbed 156.6%. During 2013 Ford increased its market share of the American hybrid market from 7.5% in 2012 to 14.7% in 2013.

As of February 2020, Hybrid cars as a proportion of all cars for sale in Ireland was very small, which could be seen in a snapshot of four car sales websites that showed that out of circa 38,000 to 70,000 cars listed for sale, only circa 3.7% to 4.7% were Hybrids had stated an aim to ban the sale of petrol, diesel and hybrid new cars from 2030, though car dealers were reported to consider the Irish Government’s target for one million electric and plug-in hybrid cars to be in use by 2030, as far too ambitious.

Network Hardware – E 115: Introduction To Computing Environments

A hub serves as a central node or device in a computer network, connecting multiple Ethernet segments, computers, and devices together and treating them as a single segment.

Only one computer can talk to the hub at a time, and that computer cannot both send and receive data at the same time.

If computers A, B, C, and D are connected to a switch, the switch will allow computers A and B to interact without sending unrequested data to C and D. Because the switch will not send data to unintended recipients, they are more secure than hubs.

Different Kinds of Routers: Internet Connection Sharing is when you have several computers connected together though a hub or a switch, but one of those computers is connected to the Internet in addition to the hub or switch.

They are individual devices and have specialized software just for routing data between the home network of computers and the Internet.

What Is Network Hardware? Definition, Architecture, Challenges, And Best Practices

Network hardware is defined as a set of physical or network devices that are essential for interaction and communication between hardware units operational on a computer network.

Network hardware is a set of physical or network devices that are essential for interaction and communication between hardware units operational on a computer network.

Network interface cards: A network interface card is a hardware unit installed on a computer, which allows it to connect to a network.

This creates inevitable business challenges for several SMBs. Hence, it is important to have a system that monitors the hardware 24/7. Although hardware failure can occur due to several factors, here are some of the main challenges of network hardware.

This is one of the prominent network hardware challenges where devices with limited computing resources are overburdened with the excess workload. Such challenges can be tackled by controlling the overutilization of device capacity by resorting to workload division and distribution among other network devices.

Proper network hardware management can help address various hardware challenges.

Networking Basics: Part 1

There have been requests for articles targeted toward those who are just getting started with networking and that have absolutely no experience at all.

A network card’s job is to physically attach a computer to a network, so that the computer can participate in network communications.

Before you built a network and started buying network cards and cabling, you had to decide if you were going to use Ethernet, coaxal Ethernet, Token Ring, Arcnet, or one of the other networking standards of the time.

Each networking technology had its strengths and weaknesses, and it was important to figure out which one was the most appropriate for your organization.

Today, most of the networking technologies that I mentioned above are quickly becoming extinct.

The problem with using a cross over cable to build a network is that the network will be limited to using no more and no less than two PCs. Rather than using a cross over cable, most networks use normal Ethernet cables that do not have the sending and receiving wires reversed at one end.

Buy Sky-Watcher Refractor & Dobsonian Telescopes And Accessories For Sale

One of the most innovative designs we’ve seen in a long time is the Sky-Watcher collapsible Dobsonian telescope.

A classic Dobsonian is a Newtonian telescope on a basic lazy-Susan-style rocker box mount.

Classic Dobsonian telescopes are not the most portable, especially when mirror sizes go beyond 10″.

Then Sky-Watcher went one betterthe collapsible Dobsonian! Instead of requiring the user to detach each truss tube and store them separately from the top and bottom portions of the OTA, Sky-Watcher telescope’s revolutionary truss-support concept allows the optical tube’s front and back cells to collapse together, aligning on the truss support rods which can then be locked down for easy and secure telescope transport.

Choosing the right Sky-Watcher accessories is an important first step towards a great astronomical experience, and we would be honored to offer our expertise as needed, whether you’re thinking about a Sky-Watcher Dobsonian, a Sky-Watcher Pro ED APO refractor, or the innovative Sky-Watcher AllView Mount.

If you’re looking for a mid-sized scope that’s powerful enough to show the best deep-sky objects in outstanding detail without breaking the bank, you can’t go wrong with the Sky-Watcher 8″ f/6 Flextube Dobsonian Telescope.

The Sky-Watcher Evostar 80ED Refractor Telescope is light and compact but still capable of producing sharp, wide-field, ultra high contrast images that showcase every detail of your selected target.

Since 2008, Sky-Watcher has manufactured dobsonians with collapsible tubes, a product line they call FlexTube-dobsonians.

The Equinox series are relatively affordable Extra-low Dispersion apochromatic refractors in Optical Tube Assembly between 66 mm and 120 mm, suitable for astrophotography.

The smaller apertures have medium focal ratios and the larger ones have long focal ratios.

“The pro series telescopes include two-element air-spaced OTA ED FPL-53 fluorite apochromatic refractors between 80 mm and 120 mm with long focal ratios, also suitable for astrophotography, as well as OTA Maksutovs with very long focal ratios and apertures of 150 mm and 180 mm. They are presented in Black Diamond tubes. [edit].”The refractors series are multi-coated achromatic refractors between 70 and 150 mm.

“The Reflector series telescopes are reflectors with optics aluminized and overcoated with silicon dioxide, available in 76 mm to 254 mm sizes. All but the smallest size are presented in equatorial mounting; the smallest one in Alt-azimuth. They are available in short, medium, and long focal ratios and chiefly parabolic mirrors. They are made with Black Diamond aluminum tubes. The 130 to 200 mm aperture parabolic mirror scopes are available with shorter tubes and dual speed Crayford focusers and are optimised for astrophotography. [edit]. Table top telescopes have a 13” high equatorial mount, designed to be extremely portable.

The struts allow the top portion of the tube to collapse down on the bottom portion, decreasing the tube length when in storage or being transported.

The Short-tube Refractors series are multi-coated two-element air-spaced Rich Field achromatic refractors with focal ratios that allow them to have short and compact tube lengths.

Sunflowers: How To Plant, Grow, And Care For Sunflower Plants

They make beautiful cut flowers and their seeds are a source of food for birds and people! See our Sunflower Guide for information on everything from planting to growing to harvesting.

The sunflower is an annual plant with a large daisy-like flower face.

Sunflowers are heliotropic, which means that they turn their flowers to follow the movement of the Sun across the sky east to west, and then returns at night to face the east, ready again for the morning sun.

Heliotropism happens during the earlier stages before the flower grows heavy with seeds.

There are tons of varieties of sunflowers available today, so there’s bound to be one that fits your garden.

A fairly fast-growing flower for their size, most sunflower varieties mature in only 80 to 95 days.

The largest sunflower varieties grow to over 16 feet in height, while smaller varieties have been developed for small spaces and containers and rarely grow larger than a foot tall! The flower heads can reach over 12 inches in diameter within the large seeded varieties.

Growing Sunflowers: Learn When To Plant And How To Grow Sunflowers

Growing sunflower plants is easy because they’re heat tolerant, pest resistant and fast growing.

Sunflowers are tall, tough plants, with some varieties reaching 14 feet in height.

You can get starter plants at a nursery or home improvement store, but growing sunflower plants is easiest if you grow them from seed sown directly into the ground.

Plant the seeds no more than an inch deep and about 6 inches apart.

Once the plant is established, water deeply but infrequently to encourage the plant to grow deep roots.

For sunflower varieties that branch into multiple stems, cutting the main stem of the plant before its bud has opened will encourage the plant to make more blooms on the sides of the stem.

Some varieties of sunflowers can get very tall and shade other plants, so don’t plant sun-loving companion plants too close.

15 Most Beautiful Types Of Sunflowers

Despite popular belief, not all sunflowers grow to be the same size and color.

With the diversity of sunflower types and many different colors, we have also included a visual guide at the bottom featuring the eight most popular types of colored sunflowers for home decor!

Because of their tall and rough stems, sunflowers can grow to be several feet high.

Because of the increased hybridizing of these plant types, there are now a number of sunflowers that grow to heights of only three feet or smaller! Scientifically known as dwarf sunflowers, these plants love to grow in bunches and occupy small spaces such as gardens and planters.

Dwarf sunflowers have the same low maintenance care requirements as their taller family members and grow best when in full sunlight.

Ranging from 12 to 15 inches tall, these miniature sunflowers bloom best in early to late summer.

To help you choose which sunflowers work best for your home decor, here is a visual guide to the eight most popular colored sunflowers.

Growing Sunflowers: Plant & Harvest Sunflowers 🌻

If you’re wondering how to plant sunflowers and how to take care of sunflowers in your garden, look no further.

Most sunflowers germinate when soil has reached 70 to 85 degrees F. The best time to plant sunflowers is just before the soil reaches this temperature.

Planting sunflowers indoors gives you a head start on the growing season.

How to grow sunflowers from seed and how deep to plant sunflower seeds depends on your specific sunflower cultivar.

To start sunflowers indoors, plant three seeds per each 3- to 4-inch peat pot.

Common Questions About Growing Sunflowers How much sun do sunflowers need?

With the proper growing conditions, sunflowers should reach maturity in 70 to 100 days after planting.

15 Eye-Popping Sunflower Varieties

As one of the most iconic flowers in the world, sunflowers are instantly recognizable thanks to their cheerful golden petals circling large dark faces, which ultimately produce edible seeds.

Look further: Sunflowers come in a range of colors, heights, and forms – beyond the yellow giants we all know and love.

The sunflower is a true annual plant that sprouts, matures, flowers, and dies in a single growing season.

Named cultivars are often hybrid plants that are either sterile or produce seeds that don’t “Come true” when planted.

Here are 15 stunning sunflower cultivars that make great garden plants.

The seeds of sunflowers are beloved by birds and other animals.

If you leave the flower heads on the plants to dry out, they will lure finches, nuthatches, and other birds to your garden in the fall and winter.

Description, Uses, & Facts

Sunflowers are native primarily to North and South America, and some species are cultivated as ornamentals for their spectacular size and flower heads and for their edible seeds.

The disk flowers are brown, yellow, or purple, while the petallike ray flowers are yellow.

Oilseed varieties typically have small black achenes, while those grown for direct seed consumption, known as confection varieties, have larger black-and-white achenes that readily separate from the seed within.

The leaves are used as fodder, the flowers yield a yellow dye, and the seeds contain oil and are used for food.

The sweet yellow oil obtained by compression of the seeds is considered equal to olive or almond oil for table use.

Sunflower oil cake is used for stock and poultry feeding.

The seeds may be eaten dried, roasted, or ground into nut butter and are common in birdseed mixes.

The History Behind Sunflowers In Ukraine

As the Russian invasion of Ukraine has continued over the past week, displaying sunflowers has become one of the many ways the world is showing solidarity for the Ukrainian people.

In London, sunflowers poke out of the barricades in front of the building housing Sunflowers for Peace, a charity organizing aid for Ukrainian residents, while in Reno, Nev., they emerge from a public art piece that spells out “BELIEVE.”.

Globally, awareness of the association between sunflowers and Ukraine has grown since Feb. 24, the first day of the invasion, when the news outlet Ukraine World shared a video on Twitter showing a Ukrainian woman in Henychesk giving sunflower seeds to Russian soldiers, with the striking instruction to put the seeds in their pockets so the flowers will grow where they die.

Sunflowers-soniashnyk in Ukrainian-have been grown in Ukraine since the mid-18th century, according to a 1993 Encyclopedia of Ukraine.

“The ubiquitous presence of the sunflower in the villages and countryside of Ukraine has made it an unofficial national symbol,” the encyclopedia says.

In June 1996, to celebrate Ukraine giving up nuclear weapons, U.S., Russian and Ukrainian defense ministers planted sunflowers in a ceremony at southern Ukraine’s Pervomaysk missile base.

More than 25 years after that ceremony, Russian and Ukrainian ministers are at war, but the meaning of the sunflowers as symbols of peace has not changed, as the cropping up of sunflowers worldwide has become a call on leaders to plant the seeds again for a more peaceful future.

Not all coffee makers are created equal, so I talked to a bunch of baristas, roasters, and coffee-shop owners about their preferred models – the ones they themselves rely on for a solid, fuss-free cup.

Size: While not quite as large as most espresso machines, coffee makers take up a considerable amount of counter space – certainly enough that it’s an important aspect to consider when buying one.

Temperature hold: Most coffee makers on this list brew into a stainless-steel thermal carafe, which keeps your coffee warm for a few hours without reheating it from below.

According to Ken Nye, owner of Ninth Street Espresso, few coffee makers “consistently bring water to that 198- to 202-degree range,” which he calls the “broadly agreed-upon standard.

Jamie McCormick, co-owner of the East Village coffee shop Abraço, tells us he prefers to keep things as simple as possible when it comes to coffee machines.

How do you make a good cup of coffee?A good cup of coffee from a home coffee brewer should be “Flavorful, of the proper strength and non-astringent, or dry on the tongue,” said Scott Rao, a coffee consultant and author of “The Coffee Roasters Companion.”

Single-cup coffee makers brew one cup of coffee using a pod or filter basket of coffee grounds.

Some manual coffee makers require you to steep and then strain your coffee grounds, while others rely on a vertical system that mimics a drip coffee maker but requires you to pour the hot water over the coffee grounds yourself.

A coffeemaker, coffee maker or coffee machine is a cooking appliance used to brew coffee.

While there are many different types of coffeemakers using several different brewing principles, in the most common devices, coffee grounds are placed into a paper or metal filter inside a funnel, which is set over a glass or ceramic coffee pot, a cooking pot in the kettle family.

On August 27, 1930, Inez H. Peirce of Chicago, Illinois filed her patent for the first vacuum coffee maker that truly automated the vacuum brewing process, while eliminating the need for a stovetop burner or liquid fuels.

A cafetiere requires coffee of a coarser grind than does a drip brew coffee filter, as finer grounds will seep through the press filter and into the coffee.

Because the coffee grounds remain in direct contact with the brewing water and the grounds are filtered from the water via a mesh instead of a paper filter, coffee brewed with the cafetiere captures more of the coffee’s flavour and essential oils, which would become trapped in a traditional drip brew machine’s paper filters.

As with drip-brewed coffee, cafetiere coffee can be brewed to any strength by adjusting the amount of ground coffee which is brewed.

If the used grounds remain in the drink after brewing, French pressed coffee left to stand can become “Bitter”, though this is an effect that many users of cafetiere consider beneficial.

Environmental Monitoring

Continued advances in the development, application, and automation of monitoring devices are needed to enhance the accuracy and cost-effectiveness of monitoring programs.

Equally as important is the need to produce more scientists and engineers that have the knowledge and training required to successfully develop and operate monitoring devices and manage monitoring programs.

Environmental monitoring generates MECs and involves analysis of soil, water, or air samples for chemicals on an ongoing basis either as part of general government environmental monitoring programs or as part of a specific program by government or industry.

Recently, environmental monitoring has become even more critical as human populations increase, adding ever-increasing strains on the environment.

Environmental noise monitoring includes techniques for monitoring air, surface water, groundwater, and environmental noise, as described in the following.

1.Air environment monitoring monitors SO2, TSP, PMIO, NO2, and CO as well as nonmethane hydrocarbons, H2S, NH3, and other characteristic pollutants in air.2.Surface water monitoring monitors the pH of surface water, potassium permanganate index, biochemical oxygen demand, petroleum, ammonia nitrogen, sulfide, cyanide, and volatile phenol pollutants.

Monitoring implies a number of activities in order to capture concentrations in the environmental compartments: from the preparation of a statistically sound sampling scheme to the selection of a sampling method, transport, storage, analytical and laboratory requirements for the analysis, as well as data quality and reporting issues.

Environmental Monitoring

Long-term environmental monitoring is critical for assessing the effectiveness of regulatory programs implemented to reduce emissions of multiple pollutants from coal-fired power plants and other stationary and mobile sources in the U.S. EPA’s Clean Air Markets Division runs two long-term environmental monitoring programs, the Clean Air Status and Trends Network and the Long-Term Monitoring Program, and contributes to a complementary long-term program run by the National Atmospheric Deposition Program.

The consistent, high-quality data these monitoring programs continue to offer are the cornerstone for tracking the extent to which emissions reductions are having their intended effects on improving human and ecosystem health, particularly as shifts in the energy sector and changes in the environment continue to occur.

Clean Air Status and Trends Network: CASTNET is a national monitoring program established to assess trends in pollutant concentrations, atmospheric deposition, and ecological effects due to changes in air pollutant emissions.

The CASTNET Data Download page provides raw measurement data as well as prepackaged data sets available for download. The Long Term Monitoring program: LTM tracks changes in surface water chemistry in response to changing air emissions and acid deposition.

The Canadian Air and Precipitation Monitoring Network: Environment & Climate Change Canada supports CAPMoN, a program similar to CASTNET and NADP. CAPMoN measures long-term regional trends in atmospheric pollutants in both air and precipitation.

The Shenandoah Watershed Study and Virginia Trout Stream Sensitivity Study: The program is a monitoring and research network focused on mountain streams in western Virginia.

The Adirondack Long Term Monitoring Program: ALTM collects Adirondacks lake water quality data used for the LTM program.

What Is Environmental Monitoring? Definition And FAQs

Environmental monitoring refers to the tools and techniques designed to observe an environment, characterize its quality, and establish environmental parameters, for the purpose of accurately quantifying the impact an activity has on an environment.

As human population, industrial activities, and energy consumption continues to grow, the continued development of advanced, automated monitoring applications and devices is crucial for enhancing the accuracy of environmental monitoring reports and the cost-effectiveness of the environmental monitoring process.

Environmental monitoring products and environmental monitoring software, such as Environmental Data Management Systems, facilitate the implementation and monitoring of environmental monitoring and assessment programs, which includes a central data management hub, automated environmental monitoring alerts, compliance checking, validation, quality control, and generation of reports on dataset comparisons.

Water Monitoring: Environmental sampling techniques include judgmental, simple random, stratified, systematic and grid, adaptive cluster, grab, and passive; semi-continuous and continuous environmental monitoring; remote sensing and environmental monitoring; and bio-monitoring are used to measure and monitor ranges for biological, chemical, radiological, microbiological, and population parameters.

Environmental monitoring solutions have evolved over the years into Smart Environmental Monitoring systems that now incorporate modern sensors, Machine Learning techniques, and the Internet of Things.

Data captured by IoT environmental monitoring sensors from a wide variety of environmental conditions can be integrated via the Wireless Sensor Network into one, cloud-based environmental system, in which IoT devices embedded with ML can record, characterize, monitor, and analyze elements in a specific environment.

IoT for environmental monitoring facilitates the development of wireless, remote environmental monitoring systems, which enable operations to remove much of the human interaction in system function, which reduces human labor, increases the range and frequency of sampling and monitoring, facilitates sophisticated on-site testing, provides lower latency, and connects detection systems to response teams, ultimately resulting in higher rates of significant disaster and contamination prevention.

Environmental Monitoring

Passive samplers, such as diffusion tubes, have the advantage of typically being small, quiet, and easy to deploy, and they are particularly useful in air quality studies that determine key areas for future continuous monitoring.

Grab sampling involves the collection of an individual sample at a specific time and place, while composite sampling involves the collection of a homogenized mixture of multiple individual samples at either a specific place over different times or multiple locations at a specific time.

Sampling may be involved as a preliminary step to measurement of the content of radionuclides in environmental media.

Typically, and often as an appendix, a monitoring programme will provide a table of locations, dates and sampling methods that are proposed and which, if undertaken in full, will deliver the published monitoring programme.

Sampling methods include judgmental sampling, simple random sampling, stratified sampling, systematic and grid sampling, adaptive cluster sampling, grab samples, semi-continuous monitoring and continuous, passive sampling, remote surveillance, remote sensing, biomonitoring and other sampling methods.

Ranked set sampling is an innovative design that can be highly useful and cost efficient in obtaining better estimates of mean concentration levels in soil and other environmental media by explicitly incorporating the professional judgment of a field investigator or a field screening measurement method to pick specific sampling locations in the field.

Grab samples provide a good snap-shot view of the quality of the sampled environment at the point of sampling and at the time of sampling.

Potato Starch: Uses, Benefits, Risks, And More

Potato starch is the extracted starch from potatoes.

If a person does not heat or cook it, potato starch contains a type of starch called resistant starch.

Potato starch is not the same as potato flour – the former is the extracted starch from crushed potatoes.

While potato starch only contains starch, potato flour comprises starch, fiber, and protein.

Potato starch is also flavorless, while potato flour has a distinct potato flavor.

Sweet potato starch is similar to potato starch in how a person makes it.

Sweet potato starch is more granular than potato starch.

Potato Starch: Nutrients, Uses, Benefits, And Downsides

Potato starch has a lower gelatinization temperature and larger starch granule size than corn starch, meaning it thickens recipes in less time.

Potato starch is a type of starch extracted from crushed potatoes.

You can use potato starch to make completely transparent potato chips called glass potato chips.

Keep in mind that these benefits are related to consuming large doses of potato starch in raw, unmodified form or taking resistant starch supplements derived from potato starch.

In a study with 28 people, supplementing with a cookie containing 25 grams of a resistant starch produced from potato starch led to a 46% reduction in post-meal insulin levels and a 23% reduction in post-meal blood sugar levels, compared with a control group.

There’s always a chance that potato starch may cause digestive side effects in some people, which is why gradually increasing dosing over time is usually recommended when taking potato starch as a supplement.

Studies on raw potato starch gradually add the starch to people’s diets over a few days or split the supplement into smaller doses.

What Is Potato Starch?

A finely textured, powder-like product, potato starch is made by extracting the natural starches found inside of a potato.

If you’re thinking of adding potato starch to your shopping list this week, here’s a heads up: Potato flour is not the same as potato starch.

Potato flour is made from crushing an entire dehydrated potato into powder.

It carries different properties, including a strong potato flavor, and can’t be substituted 1:1 with potato starch.

Since package labeling can be a little confusing at times, look to the ingredient list for answers: potato flour will list “Whole potatoes,” whereas the starch will just list “Potato extract” or “Vegetable starch.”

As a thickener, soups and sauces that have a little potato starch added to them will end up having a glossier, silkier mouthfeel than those thickened using grain-based starches, such as cornstarch.

Potato starch is a popular ingredient in many gluten-free baking recipes and is often an ingredient in all-purpose gluten-free flours because it provides structure, tenderness, and binding properties to cookies, cakes, and more.

Guide To Potato Starch

In order to make the case for potato starch, I developed three recipes that illustrate the many ways in which it can be used: a potato starch riff on Japanese agemochi; a cold potato starch noodle dish; and a crispy, batter-fried chicken.

What’s So Special About Potato Starch? Potato starch is a native starch extracted by crushing potatoes, which release free starch in the form of a milky liquid.

Potato Starch vs. Potato Flour Are potato starch and potato flour the same thing? Short answer: No. While potato starch is a pure starch extracted from potatoes, potato flour is made by cooking, drying, and grinding whole, peeled potatoes to a fine, off-white powder.

Finally, a sauce thickened with potato starch tends to be glossier and silkier, since potato starch has a lower lipid and protein profile than cornstarch, and as a result it’s a purer starch.

As a result, it’s best to introduce potato starch as a thickener toward the end of cooking and, at the very least, it’s wise not to subject potato starch to long periods of boiling or the mixture it’s been used to thicken may begin to thin.

What about combining wheat starch and potato starch? Including a small portion of gelatinized potato starch in a standard wheat flour dough makes it easier to handle, since it can bind more water than gelatinized wheat starch.

Chewy Cold Sesame Noodles Starch-based noodles are commonplace all over East Asia-mung bean starch noodles, sweet potato starch noodles, and flat rice starch noodles are just a few examples.

Potato Starch

Potato starch contains typical large oval spherical granules ranging in size from 5 to 100 μm. Potato starch is a refined starch, containing minimal protein or fat.

Potato starch contains approximately 800 ppm phosphate bound to the starch; this increases the viscosity and gives the solution a slightly anionic character, a low gelatinisation temperature of approximately 60 °C, and high swelling power.

Starch derivatives are used in many cooking recipes, for example in noodles, wine gums, cocktail nuts, potato chips, hot dog sausages, bakery cream and instant soups and sauces, in gluten-free recipes, in kosher foods for Passover and in Asian cuisine.

Many types of potatoes are grown for the production of potato starch, potato varieties with high starch content and high starch yields are selected.

Recently, a new type of potato plant was developed that only contains one type of starch molecule: amylopectin, the waxy potato starch.

Some potato starch is also produced as a byproduct from the potato processing industry, recovered from the potato cutting circuit during the production of French fries and potato chips.

Examined under a microscope using a mixture of equal volumes of glycerol and distilled water, potato starch presents transparent, colorless granules, either irregularly shaped, ovoid or pear-shaped, usually 30 μm to 100 μm in size but occasionally exceeding 100 μm, or rounded, 10 μm to 35 μm in size.

Nutrition, Pros, Cons, And Uses

Help lose weight: Resistant starch works similarly to soluble fiber, providing the body with the carbohydrates it needs and causing a prolonged feeling of fullness resistant starch contains fewer calories than regular starch.

Potato starch is similar to others in the usual uses as it gives a thick texture for broths, fillings, etc.

Potato Starch Vs. Cornstarch: A Comparison Of The Starches

Potato starch is a root starch extracted from the cells in a potato’s root tubers, which is the organ responsible for energy storage and reproduction.

Starches are odorless, tasteless white powders produced by most green plants, including potatoes, corn, and wheat, and are among the most common carbohydrates in modern diets.

Cooks typically use potato starch, which is gluten-free, as a thickening agent for soups, sauces, and stews.

You can make potato starch at home by soaking grated potatoes in warm water, then extracting the starch from the water, and allowing it to dry and harden before breaking it up with a utensil and grinding it into a powder.

Though potato starch and potato flour both come from potatoes, the latter is from dehydrated and ground potatoes resulting in a thicker powder similar in texture to cornstarch.

Potato flour primarily serves as a substitute for wheat flour in baking.

Refrain from using it interchangeably with potato starch because it takes on a sticky, glue-like consistency when used as a thickener.

NVM Express – Scalable, Efficient, And Industry Standard

The NVMe 2.0 Specifications have been published!

NVM Express is the non-profit consortium of tech industry leaders defining, managing and marketing NVMe technology.

The latest NVMe 2.0 library of specifications consists of multiple documents, including the NVMe Base specification, Command Set specifications, Transport specifications and the NVMe Management Interface specification.

The NVMe specification was designed from the ground up for SSDs. It is a much more efficient interface, providing lower latency, and is more scalable for SSDs than legacy interfaces, like serial ATA. The first part of the specification is the host control interface.

The NVMe architecture brings a new high performance queuing mechanism that supports 65,535 I/O queues each with 65,535 commands.

The NVMe interface significantly reduces the number of memory-mapped input/output commands and accommodates operating system device drivers running in interrupt or polling modes for higher performance and lower latency.

The NVMe specification also contains host-to-device protocol for SSD commands used by an operating system for: read, write, flush, TRIM, firmware management, temperature, errors and others.

NVM Express

By its design, NVM Express allows host hardware and software to fully exploit the levels of parallelism possible in modern SSDs. As a result, NVM Express reduces I/O overhead and brings various performance improvements relative to previous logical-device interfaces, including multiple long command queues, and reduced latency.

NVM Express devices are chiefly available in the form of standard-sized PCI Express expansion cards and as 2.5-inch form-factor devices that provide a four-lane PCI Express interface through the U.2 connector.

Storage devices using SATA Express and the M.2 specification which support NVM Express as the logical-device interface are a popular use-case for NVMe and have become the dominant form of solid-state storage for servers, desktops and laptops alike.

In June 2014, Intel announced their first NVM Express products, the Intel SSD data center family that interfaces with the host through PCI Express bus, which includes the DC P3700 series, the DC P3600 series, and the DC P3500 series.

NVM Express specifications are owned and maintained by NVM Express, Inc., which also promotes industry awareness of NVM Express as an industry-wide standard.

NVM Express over Fabrics is the concept of using a transport protocol over a network to connect remote NVMe devices, contrary to regular NVMe where physical NVMe devices are connected to a PCIe bus either directly or over a PCIe switch to a PCIe bus.

Linux supports NVMe Host Memory Buffer from version 4.13.1 with default maximum size 128 MB. macOS Apple introduced software support for NVM Express in Yosemite 10.10.3.

What Is NVM Express?

Non-volatile memory is usually flash memory that can come in a few forms including SSDs, PCIe add-in cards, and M.2 cards.

This logical device interface was created to leverage low latency and internal parallelism of SSDs. The NVMe is stored in a chip that is co-located with the storage media.

The NVMe assists the SSD to reach maximum parallelism within modern SSDs which allows you to reduce i/O overhead and optimizes performance.

It makes SSDs much more scalable than legacy interfaces.

The NVMe architecture delivers a new high performance queuing mechanism.

The NVMe interface significantly reduces the number of memory-mapped input/output commands.

The NVMe specification even contains host-to-device protocol for SSD commands through an operating system for: read, write, flush, TRIM, firmware management, temperature, errors and others.

NVMe: A Cheat Sheet

NVM Express eliminates those issues by providing a predictable common interface for drives to use, with a common driver specification eliminating the need for device-specific drivers, taking the guesswork out of using these SSDs. SEE: All of TechRepublic’s cheat sheets and smart person’s guides.

Taken as a whole, NVMe has a flash-first philosophy that does not constrain drives from using the solid-state attributes of flash, which in turn leads to higher performance.

Further, the researchers indicate that in a head-to-head comparison of a single NVMe drive compared to a single SATA drive, the NVMe drive “Can provide performance benefits of up to 8x” on database workloads.

A single NVMe drive outperforms a a RAID0 array of four SATA SSDs by “Up to 5x.”.

Looking back at the speed examples of the two drives compared in the last section, NVMe offers about a 6x increase in read speed, and a 5.25x increase in write speed over a similar SATA SSD. Additional resources.

Users of relatively modern PCs can use NVMe SSDs, with many vendors shipping PCs with NVMe drives integrated.

While older computers with only PCI Express 2.0 can use NVMe SSDs, most NVMe SSDs use a four lane interface, limiting the drives to a theoretical peak of 2000 MB/sec, though this is in practice 10-15% lower due to overhead. This being the case, achieving the specification-listed 3400 MB/s read speeds on the aforementioned WDS100T2X0C drive would not be possible.

What Is NVMe?

The NVMe standard does not state NVMe’s main use; however, it does define a register interface, command set and collection of features for PCIe-based SSDs with the goals of high performance and interoperability across a broad range of NVM systems.

By comparison, there is a large performance difference between NVMe and SATA. For example, NVMe experiences much less latency than SAS and SATA protocols.

High-end enterprise NVMe SSDs may consume more power than SAS or SATA SSDs. The SCSI Trade Association claims the more mature SAS SSDs offer additional advantages over NVMe PCIe SSDs, such as greater scalability, hot pluggability and time-tested failover capabilities.

In May 2013, the NVM Express Workgroup held its first Plugfest to enable companies to test their products’ compliance to the NVMe specification and to check interoperability with other NVMe products.

The specification was restructured to enable faster and easier development of NVMe and to support a more diverse NVMe environment.

Fabric transports include NVMe-oF using remote direct memory access and NVMe-oF mapped to FC. A technical subgroup of NVM Express Inc. worked on NVMe-oF with RDMA, while the T11 committee of the International Committee for Information Technology Standards developed NVMe over FC. The NVMe-oF specification is largely the same as the NVMe specification.

The stated design goal for NVMe-oF was to add no more than 10 microseconds of latency for communication between an NVMe host computer and a network-connected NVMe storage device, in comparison to the latency associated with an NVMe storage device using a local computer’s PCIe bus.

Understanding SSD Technology: NVMe, SATA, M.2

NVMe is a communications interface and driver that defines a command set and feature set for PCIe-based SSDs with the goals of increased and efficient performance and interoperability on a broad range of enterprise and client systems.

NVMe was designed for SSD. It communicates between the storage interface and the System CPU using high-speed PCIe sockets, independent of storage form factor.

Input/Output tasks performed using NVMe drivers begin faster, transfer more data, and finish faster than older storage models using older drivers, such as AHCI a feature of SATA SSDs. Because it was designed specifically for SSDs, NVMe is becoming the new industry standard for both servers in the data centre and in client devices like laptop, desktop PCs and even next gen gaming consoles.

NVMe technology is available in a number of form factors such as the PCIe card slot, M.2, and U.2.

While there are SSDs that use the SATA, PCIe slot and M.2 that are AHCI and not NVMe, U.2 is a form factor that exclusively uses the NVMe protocol.

The infographic below will help you understand how all of the different form factors and protocol are found in various types SSDs and what the differences are in performance.

We offer advice on what benefits Enterprise SSDs will bring to your specific storage environment and which SSD is most suitable for your workloads requiring a balance of high random read-and-write IOPS performance.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Basal cell carcinoma begins in the basal cells – a type of cell within the skin that produces new skin cells as old ones die off.

Basal cell carcinoma occurs when one of the skin’s basal cells develops a mutation in its DNA. Basal cells are found at the bottom of the epidermis – the outermost layer of skin.

Radiation therapy to treat acne or other skin conditions may increase the risk of basal cell carcinoma at previous treatment sites on the skin.

Because basal cell carcinoma often takes decades to develop, the majority of basal cell carcinomas occur in older adults.

If you have a family history of skin cancer, you may have an increased risk of developing basal cell carcinoma.

Certain rare genetic diseases can increase the risk of basal cell carcinoma, including nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome and xeroderma pigmentosum.

A history of basal cell carcinoma may also increase the chance of developing other types of skin cancer, such as squamous cell carcinoma.

The Skin Cancer Foundation

BCCs arise from abnormal, uncontrolled growth of basal cells.

BCC most often occurs when DNA damage from exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or indoor tanning triggers changes in basal cells in the outermost layer of skin, resulting in uncontrolled growth.

In patients with darker skin, about half of BCCs are pigmented.

For more images and information on BCC signs, symptoms and early detection strategies, visit our BCC Warning Signs page.

How dangerous is BCC? While BCCs rarely spread beyond the original tumor site, if allowed to grow, these lesions can be disfiguring and dangerous.

Untreated BCCs can become locally invasive, grow wide and deep into the skin and destroy skin, tissue and bone.

More than one out of every three new cancers are skin cancers, and the vast majority are BCCs. The diagnosis and treatment of nonmelanoma skin cancers, including BCC and squamous cell carcinoma, increased up to 77 percent between 1994 and 2014.

Basal Cell Carcinoma

Some genetic syndromes associated with an increased risk of BCCs are xeroderma pigmentosum, basal cell nevus syndrome, Bazex-Dupre-Christol syndrome, and Rombo syndrome.

The most common predictor of BCC development is a history of squamous cell carcinoma or BCC. Patients are at least ten times more likely to develop a second BCC if they have a BCC history compared to patients without a history of non-melanoma skin cancer.

Basosquamous or metatypical BCC shows features of both BCC and SCC. The exact nature of this lesion is controversial, but most reserve this term for the rare basal cell carcinoma composed of nests and strands of cells maturing into larger and paler cells without peripheral palisading.

Many clinical variants of BCC exist, but the most recognized types are superficial, nodular, and morphea-like BCC. Nodular BCC is the most common.

Portions of superficial basal cell carcinomas can evolve into nodular BCC over time.

A skin biopsy is necessary for clinical confirmation of BCC. A shave, punch, or excisional biopsy are all options, taking care to include some portion of the dermis in the specimen to differentiate between superficial and other invasive histologic subtypes of BCC. It should be noted that punch and shave biopsy techniques are about 80% accurate in diagnosing the various subtypes of basal cell carcinoma.

The recurrence rates for primary BCC are as follows: Mohs surgery, 1.0%; surgical excision, 10.1%; EDC, 7.7%; radiation therapy, 8.7%; and cryosurgery, 7.5%. Mohs surgery provides the best long-term cure rate of any treatment modality for BCC. MMS is the gold standard for treating high-risk BCCs and recurrent BCCs because of its high cure rate and tissue-sparing benefit.

Basal Cell Carcinoma Overview

Basal cell carcinoma, also called epithelioma, is the uncontrolled growth of the skin’s basal cells.

X-ray treatments for acne and exposure to industrial pollutants such as arsenic and hydrocarbons also increase the risk of developing basal cell carcinoma.

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common skin cancer in the United States, with nearly 3 million cases diagnosed each year.

Basal cell carcinoma usually begins as a painless bump or nodule that grows slowly.

Basal cell carcinoma is curable, but prevention – not getting too much sun – is the best medicine.

Your doctor can diagnose basal cell carcinoma by examining your skin and performing a biopsy.

Regular checkups are recommended for five years after removal of a basal cell carcinoma to make sure the cancer has not returned, and no new ones have appeared.

Basal Cell Carcinoma: Symptoms, Causes, And Treatment

Also known as morpheic, morphoeiform or sclerosing BCC. Morphoeic basal cell carcinoma Basosquamous carcinomaMixed basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell.

Potentially more aggressive than other forms of BCC. Also known as basosquamous carcinoma and mixed basal-squamous cell carcinoma.

Some typical superficial BCCs on trunk and limbs are clinically diagnosed and have non-surgical treatment without histology.

The treatment for a BCC depends on its type, size and location, the number to be treated, patient factors, and the preference or expertise of the doctor.

Most appropriate treatment for nodular, infiltrative and morphoeic BCCs. Should include 3 to 5 mm margin of normal skin around the tumour.

Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that can show up on the skin in many ways.

As the above pictures show, this skin cancer tends to develop on skin that has had lots of sun exposure, such as the face or ears.

For many people, the only sign of this skin cancer is a slow-growing bump, sore-like growth, or rough-feeling patch on their skin.

Some people develop symptoms where they have this skin cancer.

To find skin cancer early, dermatologists recommend that everyone check their own skin with a skin self-exam.

This is especially important for people who have a higher risk of developing BCC. You’ll find out what can increase your risk of getting this skin cancer at, Basal cell carcinoma: Who gets and causes.

Basal Cell Carcinoma: Symptoms, Causes, Treatment, Prognosis, Picture

Basal cell carcinoma is a cancer that grows on parts of your skin that get a lot of sun.

Basal cell carcinoma usually grows very slowly and often doesn’t show up for many years after intense or long-term exposure to the sun.

Ultraviolet rays from the sun or from a tanning bed are the main cause of basal cell carcinoma.

Your doctor may suggest some medicine that can treat your basal cell carcinoma.

You’re most likely to get one of these drugs if your basal cell carcinoma has spread to other parts of your body.

Basal cell carcinoma rarely spreads to other parts of the body, and the treatment is almost always successful, especially if it’s caught early.

Bausch Health Under Investigation Over Marketing Of Dermatology Drugs- STAT

The crest of the United States Department of Justice is seen at its headquarters in Washington, D.C., U.S., May 10, 2021.

Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.comApril 13 – The U.S. Department of Justice is investigating Bausch Health Companies in connection with its marketing of four drugs used to treat different skin conditions, health news website STAT reported on Wednesday.

The justice department last year sought information from Bausch Health, previously known as Valeant Pharmaceuticals, under a civil investigative demand about its activities involving promotion of the drugs for uses not approved by regulators, the report said.

The company did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment.

Bausch Health’s three drugs used to treat plaque psoriasis – Bryhali, Siliq, and Duobrii – and a fungal treatment called Jublia were the focus of the department’s investigation, the report said.

The Canadian firm changed its name from Valeant in 2018 as it sought to distance itself from a series of scandals and accounting issues under the drug company’s previous management.

The probe, known as a civil investigative demand, aims to look at whether Bausch promoted three plaque psoriasis drugs – as well as a fungal treatment – in ways not intended for use.

Bausch Health Draws ‘Untitled Letter’ From OPDP For DTC Video, HCP Web Page

Bausch Health has drawn scrutiny for a promotional video and web page that, regulators said, misbranded its prescription psoriasis cream Duobrii.

Bausch was targeted because the video and web page downplay the risks associated with the drug and mislead regarding the overall benefit patients may expect, according to an untitled letter sent by the FDA’s Office of Prescription Drug Promotion.

Untitled letters, a less severe form of enforcement than warning letters, notify the manufacturer of a regulatory violation.

The letter to Bausch Health is the second of its kind in 2022, following four in 2021.

Like the January 2022 untitled letter for social media promotion around Eli Lilly’s Trulicity diabetes injection, the Bausch letter comments not simply on the omission of risk information but the manner in which that information is being presented.

While some information regarding the risk is presented in the video, it “Does not mitigate the misleading impression,” the letter reads.

Bausch Health is required to submit a response to OPDP within 15 working days.

Bausch Health

In July 2018, the name of the company was changed to Bausch Health Companies Inc., in order to distance itself from the public outrage associated with massive price increases introduced by Valeant.

In March 2013, Valeant acquired Obagi Medical Products, Inc. In May 2013, the company acquired Bausch & Lomb from Warburg Pincus for $8.7 billion in a move to dominate the market for specialty contact lenses and related products.

Tanner had been responsible for managing Valeant’s relationship with Philidor as well as Valeant’s “Alternative fulfillment” program, which the company used to increase prescriptions for its own drugs instead of generic substitutes.

In late September 2015, members of the United States House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform urged the Committee to subpoena Valeant for their documents regarding the sharp increases in the price of “Two heart medications it had just bought the rights to sell: Nitropress and Isuprel. Valeant had raised the price of Nitropress by 212% and Isuprel by 525%”. The New York Times columnist Joe Nocera claimed that Valeant CEO J. Michael Pearson’s “Plan was to acquire pharmaceutical companies, fire most of their scientists, and jack up the price of their drugs”.

“Valeant is known for buying companies and laying off their employees to achieve savings, while accumulating a debt of about $30 billion. It spends an amount equivalent to only 3% of its sales on research and development, which it views as risky and inefficient compared with buying existing drugs. Traditional big drug companies spend 15 to 20% of sales on research and development. Valeant also pays extremely low taxes because it is officially based in Canada, although Mr. Pearson operates from New Jersey.”

Valeant’s acquisition of Bausch & Lomb in 2013, and Paragon Vision Services in 2015, is alleged to have given the company control of over 80% of the production pipeline for hard contact lenses.

On April 27, 2016, Bill Ackman, J. Michael Pearson, and Howard Schiller were forced to appear before the United States Senate Special Committee on Ageing to answer to concerns about the repercussions for patients and the health care system faced with Valeant’s business model.

Post Idea #23: Lightning Network

Related Articles – Summarized

Lightning Network

Lightning is a decentralized network using smart contract functionality in the blockchain to enable instant payments across a network of participants.

The Lightning Network is dependent upon the underlying technology of the blockchain.

By using real Bitcoin/blockchain transactions and using its native smart-contract scripting language, it is possible to create a secure network of participants which are able to transact at high volume and high speed.

Two participants create a ledger entry on the blockchain which requires both participants to sign off on any spending of funds.

Both parties create transactions which refund the ledger entry to their individual allocation, but do not broadcast them to the blockchain.

They can update their individual allocations for the ledger entry by creating many transactions spending from the current ledger entry output.

By creating a network of these two-party ledger entries, it is possible to find a path across the network similar to routing packets on the internet.

Bitcoin’s transaction fees can vary wildly depending on the current demand to use the network.

If Bitcoin is to be used for everyday payments, the transaction speed must increase and transaction costs must decrease drastically.

The limiting factor of the Bitcoin network is that every transaction must be put in a new block on chain.

Debates on major reworkings of the Bitcoin protocol have happened before and resulted in ‘hard forks,’ most notably the creation of Bitcoin Cash.

Any number of transactions between the first and last will happen off chain, which means those transactions are not limited by the Bitcoin protocol.

The total amount of Bitcoin that can be transferred through this channel is the total amount of Bitcoin committed.

As of August 2021, LN has locked up approximately 2,300 BTC. This might sound like a lot, but by comparison, Bitcoin has been locked up on Ethereum to the tune of 250,000 BTC. Since block times on Ethereum are approximately every 14 seconds as opposed to Bitcoin’s 10 minutes, it already is much faster to transact Bitcoin via WBTC on the Ethereum network.

Lightning Network

Normal use of the Lightning Network consists of opening a payment channel by committing a funding transaction to the relevant base blockchain, followed by making any number of Lightning Network transactions that update the tentative distribution of the channel’s funds without broadcasting those to the blockchain, optionally followed by closing the payment channel by broadcasting the final version of the settlement transaction to distribute the channel’s funds.

On May 10, 2017, Christian Decker of Blockstream made the first full, secure Lightning payment on a non-test network, and the first Lightning payment on Litecoin, sending a microscopic payment not normally possible or economic on a blockchain, fully settled in a fraction of a second.

The government has introduced a wallet utilising the Lightning Network protocol while giving the freedom for citizens to use other Bitcoin Lightning wallets.

Reas Antonopoulos has referred to the Lightning Network as a second layer routing network.

Lightning network payments may be routed through many sequential channels where each node operator will be able to see payments across their channels, but they will not be able to see the source nor destination of those funds if they are non-adjacent.

The Lightning Network is made up of bidirectional payment channels between two nodes which combined create smart contracts.

Laszlo Hanyecz, who gained fame in the cryptocurrency community for paying 10,000 BTC for two pizzas in 2010, bought two more pizzas in 2018 using Lightning Network and paid 0.00649 BTC. Zion, The Bitcoin Social Network, utilizes the Lightning Network running LND to send content peer-to-peer through channels.

What Is The Lightning Network?

In Bitcoin’s case, the Lightning Network – introduced in 2015 and launched in 2018 – aims to bring maximized speed and minimized transaction fees for Bitcoin transactions.

To achieve this, Lightning Network kicks out the need for you to interact with the Bitcoin network’s slow protocol for every Bitcoin transaction.

To do this the Lightning network interacts with the Bitcoin network for the creation and closing of the channels.

If you replace Facebook with Lightning Network in the same example, having just one channel with such a friend can help you make Bitcoin payments to 20,000 people.

The first and most critical drawback of using the Lightning Network is that it prevents users from using their Bitcoin outside of the channel(s) until the channel is closed.

Lightning Network is connected to the internet 24×7, and there’s no way, at least not yet, to use a cold wallet with the channels on the network.

Unless there’s a better way to steer clear of the challenges of Bitcoin, Lightning Network will enable you to make your day-to-day payments with ease.

Lightning Network ⚡ What Is Bitcoin Lightning Network?

The first real-world transaction over a Lightning Network channel occurred in December 2017, when Alex Bosworth used Lightning to pay for his phone bill.

There have been several teams that have since released Lightning nodes on mainnet, including Blockstream’s c-lightning, Lightning Labs’ lnd and Acinq’s Eclair solutions.

The Lightning Network is built off-chain for users to conduct bitcoin transfers in an effort to reduce on-chain network congestion.

The direct payment channel between the two parties can also become part of the larger Lightning Network.

Lightning nodes on the network search for the best route to perform the transaction.

If your friend takes you to their favorite coffee shop, who they have a channel with, Lightning Network would allow you to route your payment through your friend when you pay for coffee, without you needing to open a new channel with the coffee shop.

Of note, Bitcoin on-chain analysts can quickly identify these transactions as coming from the Lightning Network because they appear as complex smart contracts that include the various public keys and signatures used in the channel.

What Is The Bitcoin Lightning Network? How Does It Work?

Lightning is a decentralized network that uses smart contract functionality in the Bitcoin blockchain to facilitate instant payments across a network of users.

Who is developing the lightning network? There are a number of startups working on different implementations of lightning Bitcoin.

Lightning Labs focuses its efforts on creating a working model of the Lightning Network.

Perhaps the most important benefit of the Lightning Network is that it will allow Bitcoin to scale.

There are several reasons someone might want to run a Lightning node, such as helping the Bitcoin network scale, increased privacy for personal transactions, and bypassing censorship in areas where governments have heavily regulated crypto and crypto exchanges.

The Lightning Network is a layer-2 solution that provides a way for Bitcoin to scale.

While the Lightning Network will primarily benefit users interested in Bitcoin as a form of payment, there are other users who consider Bitcoin to be more of an investment.

What Is Lightning Network? And How To Use It In 2020

What is the Lightning Network? The Lightning Network is a “Second-layer solution” built on top of the Bitcoin network, meaning that it is built separately to the Bitcoin network but interacts with it.

The Lightning Network is run by a network of nodes that process payments, and transactions are commonly made using QR codes-instead of complex public keys.

Lightning Labs, a blockchain engineering lab, helped to launch a beta version of the Lightning Network in March, 2018-alongside a host of individuals and other companies including ACINQ and Blockstream.

How does the Lightning Network work? The Lightning Network speeds up transactions, while reducing costs, by skirting the main Bitcoin blockchain.

How to connect to the Bitcoin Lightning Network You can connect to the Lightning Network either by running a node or by using a Lightning wallet.

Around 200 Lightning nodes, about 20% of the network at the time-meaning that the network struggled to process any transactions.

Best Avalanche Airbag Packs Of 2022

Below, we’ve compiled a list of the best avalanche airbags for the 2022 season, including entry-level canister designs, premium battery-powered systems, and ultralight models.

Integrated into a ski backpack or vest, an avalanche airbag system is comprised of an airbag and power source.

As with all avalanche science there are a number of human factors at play: for example, in many cases an airbag might offer an illusion of safety, thus actually increasing the likelihood of traveling in avalanche terrain.

An airbag unit-including the packed airbag and power source-will take up roughly two liters of space within your backpack, which sounds small but in practice is not insignificant.

Most of us won’t be purchasing an airbag unit and backpack separately, but the option can come in particularly handy if you want to swap your airbag between packs of varying capacities.

Chances are, if you’re purchasing an avalanche airbag you’re well versed in avalanche terrain and rescue.

An avalanche airbag is a great tool for intermediate and advanced skiers who often find themselves in avalanche terrain.

Avalanche Backpack

A unique removable system integrated into a unique backpack.

FULL SYSTEM WEIGHT 1280G. -720g lighter than any other electronical system on the market.

“Nowadays avalanche airbags have become a standard and they are a crucial part of the avalanche safety equipment. Our SCOTT Alpride technology creates an additional margin of safety if things go wrong. Our task is to provide the best tool for the job and deliver leading technology to our athletes – whether it’s a ski patroller or a freeride athlete.”

Marc-Antoine Schaer Founder and CEO of Alpride SA. “Innovation, care and precision are the values that we maintain during each step of the development and the production of our avalanche airbags. These values are the moto that drives us to obtain this level of quality in the products with such a high level of reliability. Thanks to the partnership with SCOTT, we have been able to combine the best airbags and backpacks together in order to offer the best in class product, which is also among the most reliable of the market. We are proud that mountain lovers and professionals – including the well-reputated Compagnie du Mont-Blanc, trust SCOTT and Alpride to ensure their safety.”

Lightweight, combined with simple user-friendly design, fast reinstallation, and low cost, make these SCOTT packs the most accessible airbags ever produced.

To repack the airbag after the system has been triggered; simply push the button on the valve to fully deflate the bag and follow the folding instructions found on the manual.

The system is not only light and extremely small, it is also very powerful, allowing it to fully inflate the 150L airbag in just 3 seconds.

How To Choose An Avalanche Airbag Pack

Some Things You Should Consider When Choosing an Avalanche Airbag Pack What type of riding will you be doing when you use this pack? Side country lines call for a smaller, more streamlined pack than multi-day hut touring, for example.

Will the ski or snowboard carry system for this pack work for you? Some avalanche airbag packs limit the ways you can attach items without blocking the airbag apparatus.

Types of Avalanche Airbag Activation SystemsThe biggest difference you’ll find between avalanche airbags is the method by which they deploy.

Many manufacturers offer the option of swapping the airbag and its mechanism between multiple packs – this allows you to choose the size that is most appropriate for each trip without buying an entirely new pack with a second airbag mechanism.

Airbag devices place some restrictions on how you carry your skis or snowboard, since you won’t want to block the path of the inflating airbag while traveling in avalanche terrain.

ARVA. ARVA is a well known French producer of packs and avalanche gear who have gotten into the airbag market with a well-designed and minimalist line of packs called “REACTOR.” REACTOR airbags packs use a dual chamber airbag and lightweight compressed air or argon cartridges that can be refilled at certified shops.

Wearing an avalanche airbag pack is not a guarantee of survival if you are caught in an avalanche.

6 The Best Avalanche Backpacks

Let’s go maybe 0 5 and let’s take our color variation and we don’t have color in here quite yet, but we will let’s take this up to 0 1.

So let’s do point zero, zero, five and then also I forgot inside our weave I want to make my warp and weft the same thickness so I’ll type in 0 8 for that and then, let’s scale the whole thing up, just a hair.

Let’s first make sure it’s on UV, let’s scale this guy way down scale mesh and then let’s rotate it 90 degrees on the UV. We need to get our kind of gradient, so we can go use our fall-off to kind of soften that edge now I’m going to scale the pattern up a little bit.

So let’s take our shape width up so instead of 0 1 1/3, let’s do point 1 5 they’re a little small still.

Let’s see what I can do here, let’s reduce the output to quite a lot, so there’s just a very small amount.

Let’s go ahead and double-click it and make it an area light and let’s take its color down to a neutral color and let’s boost it to about 1600 lumen and let’s take our environment and knock this way down.

Ah, let’s go and turn our lights back on, let’s go to edit set scene units and I’m gonna go down to millimeters instead of centimeters and I want to scale the scene.

Best Avalanche Bag For Snowmobiling

There are lots of articles out there about the best avalanche bag for snowmobiling where most of the avalanche bags aren’t even used by snowmobilers.

If you’re heading up into the backcountry to ride off the grid with your tricked out snowmobile, take a looksie at these bags as they are the best bags for avalanche protection.

In simple terms, an avalanche bag is a backpack you wear that contains an airbag system that when deployed fills with some kind of air that turns you into a much larger object in the snow.

When you pull your avalanche bag handle your air bag deploys and fills up quickly.

Highmark claims this bag provides the best protection in the case of an avalanche with the Protection Airbag System and utilizes the lightest, smallest deployment system of any avalanche bag technology on the market.

Klim ATLAS 26 AVALANCHE AIRBAG PAK. Klim took industry-leading avalanche airbag technology and built it into a snowmobile-specific backpack for mountain riders.

So there you have it – a quick overview of the best avalanche bag for snowmobiling! What avalanche bag system do you run? Let me know in the commentsdid we overlook one?

Avalanche Airbag A.LIGHT

There are various airbag backpacks and airbag systems, all of which, like the ABS A.LIGHT avalanche backpack, have safety equipment for skiers, snowboarders or ski tourers who are off-piste.

Such an avalanche backpack with an airbag system is designed to prevent the mountaineer from being buried by the snow masses of an avalanche.

In the ideal case, the avalanche victim lies down without being buried above the snowpack by pulling on activation handle and triggering the avalanche airbag, depending on the size and type of avalanche.

There is always a certain avalanche danger and in the event of an avalanche accident, an airbag backpack may be the only chance of survival.

Before every tour you should inform yourself about the different types of avalanches, the current avalanche warning and avalanche level, and only go off-road when conditions are safe.

Since even the ABS avalanche airbag cannot prevent burials in all conceivable situations, it is absolutely necessary to carry an avalanche transceiver.

ABS -Avalanche airbag, avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe are therefore the optimal avalanche emergency equipment – the avalanche emergency set is rounded off with a first aid kit.

Telecom Egypt

On September 18, 2017, Telecom Egypt launched its mobile service, branded as WE. In February 2019, Telecom Egypt signed Memorandum of Understanding with its strategic partner Nokia for the development of 5G use cases in Egypt.

In the same year, Telecom Egypt was awarded a license to begin mobile operations in Egypt but declined.

Telecom Egypt gradually increased their holdings in Vodafone Egypt until the end of 2008, when their share was 44.95%. Today, Vodafone Egypt represents a significant source of revenue for Telecom Egypt.

In an interview published in May-June 2014, Telecom Egypt’s CEO said that the company was awarded a unified telecoms licence in April 2014, but he said that this would lead to a change in the relationship with Vodafone Egypt, in which Telecom Egypt has a stake of just under 45%. Telecom Egypt will be able to offer mobile services under the terms of the new licence, he said, and will be using new 4G spectrum from 2015, and that would lead to a break-up of the relationship with Vodafone, by Telecom Egypt either buying the rest of the Vodafone Egypt stake or selling its stake to the Vodafone group.

Telecom Egypt also offers mobile services through its stake in Vodafone Egypt.

Overall, Telecom Egypt has a public monopoly over fixed landlines, provides 70% of internet service in Egypt, is the only provider of international phone service, and provides connectivity to all mobile operators.

Telecom Egypt, EIB Sign €150 Mln Loan Agreement To Support 4G Broadband Network

Flavia Palanza, the EIB’s director for EU Neighbourhood Countries, said the loan will help accelerate large scale investment in mobile networks and ensure affordable access to digital services in Egypt.

“The EIB identifies the digital transformation as a catalyser for innovation, employment, and sustainable economic growth. We are pleased to partner with TE – a dynamic group engaged in its ambitious network expansion programme – to offer a modern and broader access to connectivity throughout Egypt,” Palanza added.

On the loan agreement, Palanza said the EIB has also allocated €41 billion for projects that focus on digital transformation in the EU and its partner countries, including Egypt.

“The EIB hopes to continue supporting Egypt in its ambitious plans and projects across many sectors,” Palanza said, adding that Egypt has taken a courageous move to phase out subsidies while maintaining social protection programmes for the poorer segments of society.

“Subsidies prevent putting more money into new investments, and that is why financial institutions like the EIB come to aid Egypt in implementing new investments,” Palanza said.

Deputy head of the EU delegation in Egypt Tobias Krause said that digital transformation is a key pillar of the current ambitious phase of cooperation with Egypt.

“The EU aims to support the Egyptian government’s efforts to secure resilient and affordable access to universal connectivity to the benefit of Egyptian citizens. This project shows the commitment of our partners in the EIB to support crucial inclusive digital infrastructure planning in Egypt,” he said.

Top Crowdfunding Sites For Fundraising

No matter the cause, one of these five types of crowdfunding is right for you.

Learn which type you need to use so you can set your fundraiser up for success.

How do you know which crowdfunding platform is right for you? Consider these factors before choosing the right one.

In this article, we’ll cover the 5 things you’ll want to do in order to have a successful online fundraiser.

Crowdfunding can be a difficult if you aren’t prepared.

Read this article to find out if it’s the best option for you.

The short answer is yes, but it’s always wise to be cautious with your personal information and raised funds.

Crowdfunding Definition

Crowdfunding makes use of the easy accessibility of vast networks of people through social media and crowdfunding websites to bring investors and entrepreneurs together, with the potential to increase entrepreneurship by expanding the pool of investors beyond the traditional circle of owners, relatives, and venture capitalists.

Investors can select from hundreds of projects and invest as little as $10. Crowdfunding sites generate revenue from a percentage of the funds raised.

In recent years, some crowdfunding platforms such as Patreon and Substack have extended the reach of crowdfunding to offer a way for creative people-artists, writers, musicians, or podcasters-to sustain their creative work by receiving a steady source of income.

With the ubiquity of social media, crowdfunding platforms are an incredible way for businesses and individuals to both grow their audience and receive the funding they need.

Potential disadvantages of crowdfunding include the possible damage to you or your company’s reputation caused by “Resorting” to crowdfunding, the fees associated with the crowdfunding site, and, at least on some platforms, if you don’t reach your funding goal, any finance that has been pledged will be returned to your investors and you will receive nothing.

All Micro Small and Medium Enterprises incorporated as a company in Nigeria with a minimum of two-years operating track record are eligible to raise funds through a Crowdfunding Portal, in exchange for the issuance of shares, debentures, or such other investment instrument as the Commission may determine from time to time.

00 in assets cannot raise funds through a Crowdfunding Portal registered in Nigeria.

Though crowdfunding has been suggested to be highly linked to sustainability, empirical validation has shown that sustainability plays only a fractional role in crowdfunding.

A May 2014 report, released by the United Kingdom-based The Crowdfunding Centre and titled “The State of the Crowdfunding Nation”, presented data showing that during March 2014, more than US$60,000 were raised on an hourly basis via global crowdfunding initiatives.

A Financialist article published in mid-September 2013 stated that “The niche for crowdfunding exists in financing films with budgets in the [US]$1 to $10 million range” and crowdfunding campaigns are “Much more likely to be successful if they tap into a significant pre-existing fan base and fulfill an existing gap in the market.” Innovative new platforms, such as RocketHub, have emerged that combine traditional funding for creative work with branded crowdsourcing-helping artists and entrepreneurs unite with brands “Without the need for a middle man.”

Microcredit crowdfunding platforms such as Kiva facilitate crowdfunding of loans managed by microcredit organizations in developing countries.

Several dedicated civic crowdfunding platforms have emerged in the US and the UK, some of which have led to the first direct involvement of governments in crowdfunding.

The World Bank published a report titled “Crowdfunding’s Potential for the Developing World” which states that “While crowdfunding is still largely a developed world phenomenon, with the support of governments and development organizations it could become a useful tool in the developing world as well. Substantial reservoirs of entrepreneurial talent, activity, and capital lay dormant in many emerging economies … Crowdfunding and crowdfund investing have several important roles to play in the developing world’s entrepreneurial and venture finance ecosystem.”

As part of his response to the Amanda Palmer Kickstarter controversy, Steve Albini expressed his supportive views of crowdfunding for musicians, explaining: “I’ve said many times that I think they’re part of the new way bands and their audience interact and they can be a fantastic resource, enabling bands to do things essentially in cooperation with their audience.” Albini described the concept of crowdfunding as “Pretty amazing”.

The 7 Best Crowdfunding Sites Of 2022

Patreon is popular among digital creatives, such as YouTubers, podcasters, and bloggers.

The site allows artists to form relationships with their fans, and creators can even deliver exclusive content to their Patreon subscribers as an incentive to continue funding them.

Suffice to say, this service works best if you regularly share work on your personal platform.

Otherwise, pledgers do have the option of canceling their subscription if creators don’t produce content.

Patreon offers three plan tiers that take a percentage of the monthly income earned on the platform: Lite, Pro, and Premium.

The site boasts over 8 million active patrons and over 250,000 creators.

One drawback with Patreon is that it doesn’t market creators as much as sites such as Indiegogo or Kickstarter, which have entire verticals and pages on their projects for potential donors to browse.

What Is Crowdfunding? Clear, Simple Answer Here.

Crowdfunding at a Glance Crowdfunding is a method of raising capital through the collective effort of friends, family, customers, and individual investors.

How is Crowdfunding Different? Crowdfunding is essentially the opposite of the mainstream approach to business finance.

Broadly speaking, you can think of any crowdfunding campaign in which there is no financial return to the investors or contributors as donation-based crowdfunding.

This approach is a popular option here on Fundable, as well other popular crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo, because it lets business-owners incentivize their contributor without incurring much extra expense or selling ownership stake.

Donation-based crowdfunding – Any crowdfunding campaign in which there is no financial return to the investors or contributors.

Rewards-based crowdfunding – Any crowdfunding campaign that involves individuals contributing to your business in exchange for a “Reward,” typically a form of the product or service your company offers.

Equity-based crowdfunding – Any crowdfunding campaign that allows contributors to become part-owners of your company by trading capital for equity shares.

Medium-Chain Triglyceride

Clinical studies have also suggested that MCT may lead to a greater suppression of appetite compared to LCT. One study found that food intake was suppressed when two-thirds of the fat content of a high fat diet was derived from MCT, although body weight was not affected.

An increase in satiety due to MCT may be related to direct hepatic access via the portal vein, where most of the MCT is quickly oxidized by the liver, compared to LCT. Expression of satiety hormones such as cholecystokinin and gastric inhibitory polypeptide may also contribute to the satiety effects from MCT.MCT are a component of many foods including coconut oil, palm kernel oil, butter, milk, yogurt and cheese, with coconut and palm oils representing the richest dietary source of MCT. Edible MCT oils are obtained through lipid fractionation from sources such as coconut oil and milk.

In another study, MCT significantly increased serum triglycerides and decreased HDL-cholesterol compared to LCT. Conversely, other studies have shown that MCT lead to significantly lower plasma triglycerides compared to LCT. Furthermore, it has been suggested that experiments that reported increased plasma triglycerides were due to the very high amount of MCT in the diet, and in some cases the supply of polyunsaturated fatty acids in these diets was critically low.

MCT inhibit gastrin-stimulated gastric acid secretion, but less so than LCT. Overall, it has been determined that the satiating effects of a fat depend on the fatty acid chain length, and moreover that the role of CCK and gastrin-stimulated gastric acid are minor.

Coconut oil contains approximately 60-70% MCT. Palm kernel oil also is good source of MCT with approximately 2% C6, 55% C8, 42% C10 and 1% C12 fatty acids.

It needs to be examined, which dose and food matrix offers most benefits, and whether naturally occurring medium chain fatty acids and MCT oils have the same effect.

MCTs are a mixture of triglycerides of saturated fatty acids with chain lengths of 6-10 carbons, with caprylic and capric fatty acids being the predominant components.

Medium-Chain Triglyceride Oil And Blood Lipids: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Randomized Trials

Objectives: We conducted a systematic review to determine the effects of medium-chain triglyceride oil, consisting almost exclusively of medium-chain fatty acids, on blood lipids.

Methods: We searched Medline and Embase through March 2020 for randomized trials with a minimum 2-week intervention period that compared MCT oil with another fat or oil.

Outcomes were total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and triglyceride levels.

MCT oil intake did not affect total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, or HDL cholesterol levels, but did increase triglycerides.

Subgroup analyses showed that the effects of MCT oil on total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol differed based on the fatty acid profile of the control oil, with MCT oil increasing total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol when compared to a comparator consisting predominantly of unsaturated fatty acids, and with some evidence for reductions when compared to longer-chain SFAs.

Conclusions: MCT oil does not affect total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, or HDL cholesterol levels, but does cause a small increase in triglycerides.

Keywords: MCT oil; blood lipids; high-density lipoprotein; low-density lipoprotein; medium-chain fatty acids; medium-chain triglycerides; metanalysis; total cholesterol; triglycerides.

MCT Oil 101: A Review Of Medium-Chain Triglycerides

There are two main ways to increase your intake of MCTs – through whole food sources or supplements like MCT oil.

In milk, capra fatty acids make up 4-12% of all fatty acids, and lauric acid makes up 2-5%. MCT oil is a highly concentrated source of medium-chain triglycerides.

Many advocates market MCT oil as better than coconut oil because caprylic acid and capric acid are thought to be more rapidly absorbed and processed for energy, compared with lauric acid.

MCT oil boasts large concentrations of certain MCTs. It often contains C8, C10, or a mix of the two.

A review of 13 human studies found that, on average, the amount of weight lost on a diet high in MCTs was only 1.1 pounds over 3 weeks or more, compared with a diet high in LCTs. Another older 12-week study found that a diet rich in medium-chain triglycerides resulted in 2 pounds of additional weight loss, compared with a diet rich in LCTs. More recent, high-quality studies are needed to determine how effective MCTs are for weight loss, as well as what amounts need to be taken to reap benefits.

The use of medium-chain triglycerides and MCT oil has been associated with several other health benefits.

What’s more, one animal study found that administering MCT oil to mice fed a high-fat diet helped protect against insulin resistance and inflammation.

Medium-Chain Triglyceride

Rich food sources for commercial extraction of MCTs include palm kernel oil and coconut oil.

MCTs are found in palm kernel oil and coconut oil and can be separated by fractionation.

Retail MCT powder is MCT oil embedded in starch and thus contains carbohydrates in addition to fats.

A number of studies back the use of MCT oil as a weight loss supplement, but these claims are not without conflict, as about an equal number found inconclusive results.

Brand names of pharma-grade MCT include Kollisolv MCT 70.

MCTs passively diffuse from the GI tract to the portal system without requirement for modification like long-chain fatty acids or very-long-chain fatty acids.

Patients who have malnutrition, malabsorption or particular fatty-acid metabolism disorders are treated with MCTs because MCTs do not require energy for absorption, use, or storage.

Foods with medium-chain triglycerides, such as coconut oil may help you lose weight, provide instant energy for your brain and more.

The following are MCTs:. Caproic Acid: Also known as hexanoic acid, this saturated fatty acid contains six carbon molecules.

Lauric Acid: Also known as dodecanoic acid, PubChem states it is the main fatty acid found in coconut oil and palm kernel oil.

Medium-chain triglyceride sources include dairy fat and coconut oil, according to the authors of the International Dairy Journal article.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture nutrition data for coconut oil shows that a 100 gram serving contains 99.06 grams of fat.

MCT oil can be added to smoothies or protein shakes for an extra boost of healthy fat.

MCT supplements are man-made using fractionation to extract the fatty acids from coconut and palm kernel oils.

Triglycerides: Why Do They Matter?

Here’s why triglycerides matter – and what to do if your triglycerides are too high.

Having a high level of triglycerides in your blood can increase your risk of heart disease.

If you regularly eat more calories than you burn, particularly from high-carbohydrate foods, you may have high triglycerides.

Your doctor will usually check for high triglycerides as part of a cholesterol test, which is sometimes called a lipid panel or lipid profile.

High triglycerides may contribute to hardening of the arteries or thickening of the artery walls – which increases the risk of stroke, heart attack and heart disease.

High triglycerides are often a sign of other conditions that increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, including obesity and metabolic syndrome – a cluster of conditions that includes too much fat around the waist, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, high blood sugar and abnormal cholesterol levels.

Alcohol is high in calories and sugar and has a particularly potent effect on triglycerides.

Triglycerides Levels: How To Lower, Risks & Treatment

Learn more about triglycerides, including what causes high triglyceride levels and how to lower them.

If your triglyceride levels are high, you could be at high risk for pancreatitis and liver disease.

A doctor might recommend prescription medications to treat high triglyceride levels.

Because extra calories are converted to triglycerides and stored as fat, if you reduce your calories, you will reduce triglycerides.

Because high triglyceride levels usually do not cause any symptoms, they’re typically spotted when a doctor orders a blood test that includes a lipid panel.

If you do not have high risk factors, including health conditions and some lifestyle factors, a doctor will order a lipid panel every few years to check cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Typically, these lifestyle changes will improve your overall health and lower your triglyceride levels.

Triglycerides: Health Risks, Ways To Lower Levels

If your triglycerides and LDL cholesterol are high, but your HDL is low, you have an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

A healthy number for triglycerides is below 150 milligrams per deciliter.

High triglyceride levels become more of a problem with age.

High levels of triglycerides increase your risk of pancreatitis.

People at high risk for heart attacks, strokes or other problems may need medications to lower triglycerides.

High levels of triglycerides increase your risk of heart disease and pancreatitis.

The good news is that you can take steps to lower triglyceride numbers.

High Triglyceride Levels: Symptoms, Causes, Tests, & Normal Range

What do you know about your triglycerides? Overall, more than a third of adults in the U.S. have high triglyceride levels, a type of fat in the blood.

Studies have consistently linked high triglycerides levels with heart disease, heart attacks, and stroke, especially in people with low levels of “Good” HDL cholesterol and in those with type 2 diabetes.

So if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other things that make you more likely to get heart disease, your doctor will likely want to keep a check on your triglyceride levels.

Very high levels of triglycerides are associated with liver and pancreas problems.

High triglycerides tend to show up along with other problems, like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, high levels of “Bad” LDL cholesterol, and low levels of “Good” HDL cholesterol.

Some people have a genetic condition that seems to cause high triglyceride levels.

People with heart disease and high triglycerides may need medication to bring down their levels.

Triglycerides are a type of fat that circulates in your blood.

High triglycerides in your blood can raise your risk of heart disease and stroke.

High blood triglycerides are a type of lipids disorder, or dyslipidemia.

Certain medical conditions, genetics, lifestyle habits, and some medicines are all risk factors for high blood triglycerides.

Sometimes the genes you inherited can cause high blood triglyceride levels.

Being physically inactive, eating foods that are high in fat and sugar, or drinking too much alcohol may increase blood triglycerides.

Some medicines used to treat breast cancer, high blood pressure, HIV, and other conditions may also raise blood triglyceride levels.

Understanding Triglycerides

My cholesterol is high, but so are my triglycerides.

A. Triglycerides are the most common form of fat in the bloodstream.

There are actually several other types of lipoproteins, including some that contain mainly triglycerides.

Triglycerides can provide energy to fuel your body, while the extras are deposited in fat tissue.

When you eat extra calories – especially from carbohydrate-rich foods such as sweets and white bread – your liver churns out extra triglycerides.

Certain medical conditions -including diseases affecting the liver, kidneys, or thyroid, and poorly controlled type 2 diabetes – can also lead to high triglycerides.

To get your triglycerides back into a normal range, start with lifestyle changes.

A triglyceride is an ester derived from glycerol and three fatty acids.

If the first and third fatty acids on the glycerol differ, then the triglyceride is chiral.

A triglyceride would then be named as an ester of those acids, such as “Glyceryl 1,2-dioleate 3-palmitate”.

Chemically, formic acid and acetic acid could be viewed as the shortest fatty acids; then triformin would be the simplest triglyceride.

A triglyceride molecule may have fatty acid elements of different lengths, and a fat product will often be a mix of various triglycerides.

Stearic acid Palmitoleic acid Oleic acid α-Linolenic acid γ-Linolenic acid.

Elaidic acid is the trans isomer of oleic acid, one of the most common fatty acids in human diet.

Brokers Using This Controversial Practice Are ‘Skimming Rent, Getting Rich’: Michael Lewis

The company’s revenue prospects could dim further if the Securities and Exchange Commission banned the controversial practice of payment for order flow, David Trainer, the CEO of investment research firm New Constructs, told Forbes.

High-profile proponents of regulating the practice abound, including best-selling author Michael Lewis.

In a new interview, Lewis said the SEC should make a “Big change” on payment for order flow.

Lewis, whose landmark 2014 book “Flash Boys” drew attention to the lucrative use of high frequency trading on Wall Street, said that brokers who use payment for order flow are “Skimming rent” and “Getting rich.”

When accepting payment for order flow, brokers accept smaller price improvement for trades in exchange for higher payments from the market makers that fulfill the trades – a practice that can amount to a small surcharge for traders, effectively nullifying the commission-free trading promised by some brokers.

“It’s really true that it’s cheaper to trade in the stock market now than it was a long time ago, when you paid a broker a ridiculous commission to execute your trade,” Lewis says.

To be sure, Robinhood is hardly the only broker that accepts payment for order flow.

Cryptocurrencies May All ‘Come Crashing Down’: Michael Lewis [Video]

In a new interview, Lewis cautioned that the value of cryptocurrency may dramatically plummet and its wide adoption could threaten traditional capital markets.

While the major stock indexes have suffered losses so far this year, the widely held cryptocurrencies bitcoin and ethereum have seen sharper declines.

Proponents of cryptocurrency say volatility is to be expected for a relatively new asset class, often noting that regulatory uncertainty helps foster market swings.

Lewis, whose 2014 book heightened criticism over the lucrative use of high frequency trading on Wall Street, said cryptocurrency markets could improve upon equity markets in their removal of brokers who otherwise provide an advantage for some traders.

Cryptocurrency “Eliminates middlemen,” Lewis says.

“If you are trading on a cryptocurrency exchange, you have an account with the exchange; you don’t account with a broker who’s moving your stuff in and out of the exchange.”

“There are not high frequency traders who are paying the cryptocurrency exchange for faster information about the exchange,” he adds.

Lewis has worked for The Spectator, The New York Times Magazine, as a columnist for Bloomberg, as a senior editor and campaign correspondent to The New Republic, and a visiting fellow at the University of California, Berkeley.

In 2018, Lewis wrote and narrated The Coming Storm for Audible Studios, which released the short nonfiction story as part of its new Audible Originals series of audio books.

In a review of Moneyball, Dan Ackman of Forbes said that Lewis had a special talent: “He can walk into an area already mined by hundreds of writers and find gems there all along but somehow missed by his predecessors”.

In a 2011 column in The Atlantic, American journalist and sports author Allen Barra took issue with Lewis’s characterization of Major League Baseball in Moneyball, writing, “From a historical standpoint, Lewis is, well, way off base. By the end of the 20th century baseball had achieved a greater level of competitive balance than at any time in the game’s history… Moneyball doesn’t just get the state of present-day baseball wrong; it also misrepresents the history of the sport.”

Michael Lewis Opens Up After Teen Daughter Killed In Crash

Author Michael Lewis said it feels like a “Hole has been blown” in his family’s life following the loss of his teenage daughter in a head-on collision.

Lewis, whose work includes “Moneyball” and “The Big Short,” opened up last week about how he is still grieving the death of his daughter, Dixie Lewis, 19, in Truckee, Calif., in May. “A hole has been blown in our lives. The question is what do you grow in that hole and how do you grow from this experience,” Lewis said on Andrew Sullivan’s “The Dishcast” podcast on Friday.

Lewis said he is “Going through the hardest thing I’ve ever gone through” and that the grieving process has been “Exhausting.”

Lewis said he still doesn’t have any answers about what caused the car accident.

Lewis said he tries to “Patch together hours of distracted pleasure and normalcy,” but he still finds his thoughts turning to his daughter.

“It’s very hard day to day when you know the last thing you’re going to do before you go to bed is think of her, and the first thing you’re gonna do when you wake up is think of her,” he said.
